the thing for me is,,, this is a very vulnerable fandom space. a very young fandom space for a start, and a very diverse one - a lot of people within this space come here as a recluse from jkr's bigotry, to still experience the joy they once found in her works without truly engaging with her. and yes, we could do better in that aspect, a hell of a lot better, but this space still acts as a recluse.

to use a facist machine (ai) within a fanfilm is despicable. to steal works from authors within this space (or any space) to produce a fanfilm script is despicable. to then post it anyway, and quote "acting portfolios" as a reason to do so? disgusting.

ai is ruining creative industries. i mean, fuck, we just watched ao3 get scraped in the THOUSANDSSSS for works to be fed to an ai database. there's an ai tag on ao3. there was a whole trend on tiktok for weeks of people putting fanart into chatgpt and asking for a caption for it. there's ai generated videos using cosplayers literal faces. fics put onto that fucking app that got deleted that turned anything into an audiobook. fics on goodreads and etsy and amazon. fanart sold by people on etsy, fanart posted without credits and-

i could go on and on.

there is so much blatant disrespect towards creations within this space, and AI is reaching into every corner of it and to post a fanfilm that used AI for a script and quote love and effort? the amount of love and effort into it?

truly, despicable. because who is harmed more by ai? when these industries go, when ai, which is fed through a very western-centric and fascist perspective controls everything? who's harmed the most?

because it won't be people like jkr. it will be the people seeking recluse from those like her.

you're either in fandom because you love creating and you love community, or you're in fandom to get something out of it. and to post something that stole from fic writers for your own acting portfolios and publicity? yeah. it's obvious what side you're on.

fuck generative ai in fandom spaces and fuck anyone willing to prey on this community for their own progression - this is a community for those that need it the most, not another step on a ladder for you to climb.

so part of me wants to blame this entirely on wbd, right? bloys said he was cool with the show getting shopped around, so assuming he was telling the truth (not that im abt to start blindly trusting anything a CEO says lol), that means it’s not an hbo problem. and we already know wbd has an awful track record with refusing to sell their properties—altho unlike coyote v acme, s3 of ofmd isn’t a completed work and therefore there isn’t the same tax writeoff incentive to bury the thing. i just can’t see any reason to hold on to ofmd except for worrying about image, bc it would be embarrassing if they let this show go with such a devoted fanbase and recognizable celebrities and it went somewhere else and did really well (which it would undoubtedly do really well, we’ve long since proven that). it feels kinda tinfoil hat of me to making assumptions abt what’s going on in wbd behind the scenes, but i also feel like there are hints that i’m onto something w my suspicions: suddenly cracking down on fan merch on etsy doesn’t seem like something a studio looking to sell their property would bother with, and we know someone was paying to track the viewing stats on ofmd’s bbc airing, which isn’t finished yet, so i’d expect whoever is monitoring that to not make a decision abt buying ofmd until the s2 finale dropped.

but also i think part of me just wants there to be a clear villain in the situation. it’s kinda comforting to have a face to blame, a clear target to shake my fist at. but the truth is that the entire streaming industry is in the shitter. streaming is not pulling in the kind of profit that investors were promised, and we’re seeing the bubble that was propped up w investor money finally start to pop. studios aren’t leaving much room in their budgets for acquiring new properties, and they’re whittling down what they already have. especially w the strikes last year, they’re all penny pinching like hell. and that’s much a much harder thing to rage against than just one studio or one CEO being shitty. that’s disheartening in a way that’s much bigger and more frightening than if there was just one guy to blame.

my guess is that the truth of the situation is probably somewhere in the middle. wbd is following the same shitty pattern they’ve been following since the merger, and it’s just a hard time for anyone trying to get their story picked up by any studio. ofmd is just one of many shows that are unlucky enough to exist at this very unstable time for the tv/streaming industry.

when i think abt it that way, tho, i’m struck by how lucky we are that ofmd even got to exist at all. if the wbd merger had happened a year earlier, or if djenks and tw tried to pitch this show a year later, there’s no way this show would’ve been made. s1 was given the runtime and the creative freedom needed to tell the story the way the showrunners wanted to, and the final product benefited from it so much that it became a huge hit from sheer gay word of mouth. and for all the imperfections with s2—the shorter episode order, the hard 30 minute per episode limit, the last-minute script changes, the finale a butchered mess of the intended creative vision—the team behind ofmd managed to tell a beautiful story despite the uphill battle they undoubtedly were up against. they ended the season with the main characters in a happy place. ed and stede are together, and our last shot of ed isn’t of him sobbing uncontrollably (like i rlly can’t stress enough how much i would have never been able to acknowledge the existence of this show again if s1 was all we got)

like. y’all. we were this close to a world where ofmd never got to exist. for me, at least, the pain of an undue cancellation is worth getting to have this story at all. so rather than taking my comfort in the form of righteous anger at david zaslav or at wbd or at the entire streaming industry as a whole, i’m trying to focus on how lucky i am to get to have the show in the first place.

bc really, even as i’m reeling in grief to know this is the end of the road for ofmd, a part of me still can’t quite wrap my head around that this show is real. a queer romcom about middle-aged men, a rejection of washboard abs and facetuned beauty standards, a masterful deconstruction and criticism of toxic masculinity, well-written female characters who get to shine despite being in a show that is primarily about manhood and masculinity, diverse characters whose stories never center around oppression and bigotry, a casually nonbinary character, violent revenge fantasies against oppressors that are cathartic but at the same time are not what brings the characters healing and joy, a queer found family, a strong theme of anti colonialism throughout the entire show. a diverse writers room that got to use their perspectives and experiences to inform the story. the fact that above all else, this show is about the love story between ed and stede, which means the character arcs, the thoughts, the feelings, the motivations, the backstories, and everything else that make up the characters of ed and stede are given the most focus and the most care.

bc there rlly aren’t a lot of shows where a character like stede—a flamboyant and overtly gay middle-aged man who abandoned his family to live his life authentically—gets to be the main character of a romcom, gets to be the hero who the show is rooting for.

and god, there definitely aren’t a lot of shows where a character like ed—a queer indigenous man who is famous, successful, hyper-competent, who feels trapped by rigid standards of toxic hypermasculinity, who yearns for softness and gentleness and genuine interpersonal connection and vulnerability, whose mental health struggles and suicidal intentions are given such a huge degree of attention and delicate care in their depiction, who messes up and hurts people when he’s in pain but who the show is still endlessly sympathetic towards—gets to exist at all, much less as the romantic lead and the second protagonist of the show.

so fuck the studios, fuck capitalism, fuck everything that brought the show to an end before the story was told all the way through. because the forces that are keeping s3 from being made are the same forces that would’ve seen the entire show canceled before it even began. s3 is canceled, and s2 suffered from studio meddling, but we still won. we got to have this show. we got to have these characters. there’s been so much working against this show from the very beginning but here we are, two years later, lives changed bc despite all odds, ofmd exists. they can’t take that away from us. they can’t make us stop talking abt or stop caring abt this show. i’m gonna be a fan of this show til the day i die, and the studios hate that. they hate that we care about things that don’t fit into their business strategy, they hate that not everyone will blindly consume endless IP reboots and spin-offs and cheap reality tv.

anyway i dont rlly have a neat way to end this post. sorta just rambling abt my feelings. idk, i know this sucks but im not rlly feeling like wallowing in it. i think my gratitude for the show is outweighing my grief and anger, at least for right now. most important thing tho is im not going anywhere. and my love for this show is certainly not fucking going anywhere.

I'm still in awe of the level of self-determinationin Black Tabby Games. Both in Slay the Princess and Scarlet Hollow, they look so scripted on the surface, but your character has an amazing level of ability to assert their individuality. In Scarlet Hollow, I have played:

A gremlin who never showers, can and will eat literally anything, and makes a living stealing furniture and reselling it as upcycled on Etsy. They go out of their way to make their cousin's life difficult.

A beefy, attractive doofus who just wants the best for everyone and is in love at first sight with the nerdy goth girl. He also eats everything, but in an entirely different way.

A stressed out elementary school teacher who is very anxious about all this supernatural stuff and just wants to go home to her cat. She wants to keep her head down, so she's glued to Tabitha's side most of the time.

A streetwise skeptic who mostly goes out with Stella to have something to do and is reeling from their world getting turned upside down.

An psychic, Cassandra-esque young woman who desperately wishes people would listen to her. She sought solace in books to escape the stress of real life.

A cheerful dork who can talk to animals and is also psychic. They are fully unaffected by all this nonsense and are completely open about their abilities. They're very fond of Avery because they accept the evidence of their eyes and ears and roll with it.

I'm not done with the many possibilities of this game. It's wild.

Then there's Slay the Princess, where everything is a spoiler, but suffice it to say that you are spoiled for choice. Sometimes very very literally.

There are very few games that feel like you have this much agency. Even Baldur's Gate III is more limiting at times.

over and over and over and over—technoblade’s crown

this was the first time i had worked with EVA foam in a project that required precision in several years, and was ultimately a test in patience and perseverance—i made four separate iterations of this crown before i made one that i completely finished.

i originally designed the crown in illustrator because through my school i have access to a laser engraver. i did some digging and eva foam is technically safe to use on a co2 laser, so I figured i’d save myself some trouble and cut the shape out entirely on the laser.

unfortunately things can’t always be quite that easy and i ended up only being able to cut the thin 2mm foam on the laser. the thicker 10mm stuff sparked in a way that the shop manager was not comfortable with after some testing.

with the 2mm foam, though, i engraved galactic script of all of the helmet enchantments to serve as the band along the bottom of the crown!

i cut the crown shape out by hand and shaped it gently using a heat gun and a bucket to help it ‘learn’ the round shape.

at this point, i was convinced i’d be able to use a dremel tool to smooth out any rough edges on the foam. this was… not the case. and was how i lost the first of four tries. the edges got super rough and i ended up using it for practice to test out carving in designs with the dremel.

my original plan also was to cast my own gems for the crown using a mold i made with 3d prints. this also did not work for a wide variety of reasons and was just kind of a huge mess. the resin had gone bad, i didn’t sand the prints enough to have the finish i wanted, the colors were waaay more opaque than anticipated, and altogether it just did not work. so i found some gems i liked on etsy and ordered those instead!

on my second crown iteration i made it all the way through carving in settings for the gems before my spraypaint went bad and i got upset about the way the very small nicks became very big gashes when the foam was sealed. so i started over, this time getting a sharpening stone for my knife and focusing intensely on creating clean cuts the first time. the third iteration didn’t even make it past being cut out before i ditched it because i was still figuring out the clean cuts.

the fourth iteration had all of the things i wanted. clean cuts, smooth sealant, well fitting gem settings, and a nuanced paint job achieved using an airbrush and dry brushing techniques like ive used on all of the other gold accessories. the airbrush paint job was slow and steady, especially since the nozzle of my airbrush was just ever so slightly too small for the metallic pigments, but it was so worth it in the end.

after painting the base crown, i glued in the gems, painted a blue stripe to be the lapis shining through the engraved enchantments, and added in magnets to both the crown and the head.

i’m very excited by how it turned out!!

This is my story of what this person did to me. Please comment after you read the whole post. I've been through enough cyberbullying and I don't want any more. I just want to point out how this person has threatened me, robbed me of money and caused me huge psychological problems

It all started because I wanted to buy a commision. I wanted Belos in a men's corset and Magpie gave me my choice of free backgrounds. For fun, I wrote down I'd take the one with dead Caleb. The problem was, I'm not from an English-speaking country. I can read and speak, but I can't write in English, so I use a translator, which unfortunately made my joke into something disgusting, for which I wanted to apologize.

I started spamming because my brain went into induced trauma mode. I was always being punished for my mistakes and I was terrified of losing this person. He was my idol, a great hero in silver armor whose work supported me in times of trouble.

He blocked me and in a big panic I texted him on his Co-Fi when I had a subscription. My mind was in a total panic. I know he was asking me to leave him, but I couldn't. I cared so much about him as a person. We weren't friends, we were more like acquaintances. He sent me his projects, scripts and everything for his big project.

That's where the threats began, which sent me into a major panic attack and caused me to self-harm and slit my wrists.

After a couple of days I contacted him on Etsy because I had bent one of his products - a necklace - out of stress and I needed to know what the material was, because I was afraid I would break it during the repair. He translated that into me stalking him, accusing me of ruining his life. It's a pretty big problem with him that he doesn't put important information in the description of the product he's selling. I deleted the message, but before that I copied it for a guy who was helping me with the whole situation.

I know he asked me to leave him, but I was just fighting not to lose someone I cared about.

About the Ko-fi thing. I had a subscription to it. He sent me the link himself, asking if I wanted to support him. I said yes, of course. I was a big fan. I tried to contact him there to work things out. There he started threatening me sa blocked me there too. Unfortunately he chose the option that involved not returning my money. So after a couple of weeks I contacted him about it because I wanted my money back. Not all of it. I'm a fair person and only wanted to refund what was left of my total subscription from the day I was blocked. He never wrote me back and never sent the money back despite knowing my paypal because I sent him money through it several times.

I wanted to apologize to him for everything. When I texted him about the etsy, I had an apology ready.

I've tried to call out this behavior in the past, but all I've gotten is cyberbullying and death threats

Meanwhile, Magpie made me a stalker even though I only contacted him on platforms where we had previous contact and I just didn't do anything to make me a stalker. I was just trying to work things out.

Magpie then dragged more people into the whole issue. My ex-girlfriend who was just trying to buy stuff from him and xx other people. He lied to my girlfriend about the email saying he couldn't send her a package because of it. When she told him he was lying he blocked her and reported her.

And that's my story. I don't want to throw hate at Magpie. I don't want to sink to his level. I just want to point out what he did to me and that I'm now carrying new traumas from both his threats and cyberbullying from his fans.

Last summer I got covid (again) and as I was basically bedridden for a few days, my boyfriend suggested a start an audiobook, and that apparently the lord of the rings one was good. So, I listened.

I first read Lotr when i was 8, and often until i was about 13. I wrote more about it in my last lotr post, but one of the main things I noticed in the audiobook (that i missed as a kid) was just how intimately and physically romantic the relationship between Frodo and Sam is. As their journey continues they cradle each other to sleep and kiss each other out of pure affection. Of course, their language is full of adoration for each other too.

I assume that Tolkien didn't intend for them to share more than platonic love, but certainly he intended that they have a bond far deeper than friendship or camaraderie. I don't know enough about Tolkien's life to speculate, but I suspect it's got something to do fighting in WWI.

RE: the lil comic pic, it was about the following lines when Frodo has healed from the Ringwraith-inflicted sword wound, long before he and Sam's private quest in Emyn Muil and beyond; “At that moment there was a knock on the door, and Sam came in. He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away.”

Drawing these, I tried to remember how I imagined the characters from back when i was a kiddo, when I thought of the hobbits as more pixie-like and less like actual adult men.

(i also wrote a little script for a sort-of comic about Frodo, Sam and Rosie. Maybe one day I'll get round to doing something with it).

There is a comprehensive railway network and service across the United States and all over the world that is clean, frequent, reliable, affordable, passenger rail

There are clean, free, well maintained, beautiful public restrooms everywhere in cities and suburbs

There are clean, free, well maintained, beautiful water fountains and bottled water fillers everywhere in cities and suburbs

There are lots of clean, free or affordable, well maintained, beautiful third spaces like libraries, cafes, restaurants, bars, theaters, rec centers, maker spaces, parks, museums, etc

There is less crime and danger overall

There is less retail theft and unruly behavior

People don’t litter and the environment is clean

New York is similar to Amsterdam in cycling infrastructure and how it tackles cars

Biking pathways are safe, well built, separate from cars, clean, well maintained, well lit and tree lined, and are comprehensive across the world

There are protected bike lanes that are well maintained and have access to public transportation

There are bike sharing programs available as well as workplace showers

There is comprehensive bike parking around different areas and in cities having bike parking garages

There is very little stealing of bikes and they are always returned to their owners

Within many workplaces there are well made, beautiful, clean, well maintained bathrooms with showers

Unions are common among many fields and professions

Climate change and global warming are not an issue and temperatures are naturally cooler by 10 degrees Fahrenheit and this only improves agricultural productivity, harvests, and the environment with animals

Agriculture has less monocultures and more variety

There are more trees and different types of trees

Deforestation isn’t an issue

There are more fruits, vegetables, algae, spices, herbs, edible flowers, grains, nuts, seeds, fungi, and proteins

It is much easier to accommodate dietary restrictions

People have less allergies

There are less unhealthy highly processed foods

Medical treatments are extremely affordable and advanced

Scar treatments are much better

Everything is more accessible

We are able to have nice things, people don’t destroy the world unnecessarily

Tipping is not a requirement at places

People are all paid fairly and a living wage

Universities are affordable, accessible, beautiful, provide independence, and teach extremely well all over the world

People all over the world have access to education that is well made, factually accurate, and clean

Pinterest is a better platform where it doesn’t focus so much on shopping items and it doesn’t have a bunch of ai images and scams

Private Equity doesn’t buy everything and ruin it all

Gay marriage is legal around the world
