With the Reddit API change about to take effect, I want to mention a few things that I've seen that are likely to change or go away.
First of all, there's multiple bot accounts used for moderation, user tools, or plain fun. Everyone here loves haiku-bot. Reddit has u/haikusbot which does the same thing. The API change means it won't work anymore. There's also u/RemindMeBot which you can ping to set reminders. One useful bot due to repost karma-farmers always being an issue is u/RepostSleuthBot which can scan Reddit to see if a post has previously been uploaded. There's also u/SaveVideo which can create downloaded video files of posts. So the API changes mean losing a lot of user tools.
Then there's site specific bots like u/Roboragi which posts links to anime/manga sites for people. r/lotrmemes is filled with tons of bots of various lotr characters (and Robert Baratheon) and the bots will have full conversations in the comments. So the API changes means an end to a piece of some subreddits' culture.
And finally there's u/automoderator. This is a major tool used by mods to manage the subs. u/automoderator is used across multiple subreddits and has various functions per sub. One simple task is to check if a poster has a certain minimum karma, thus preventing spammers from casually brigading a subreddit. It can also auto ban users who post to certain subreddits which keeps out certain political views (or maybe two subreddits are just having silly wars with each other). Also, it can auto-comment important messages to posts.
So this change is going to destroy a lot of the internal charm of the site and it will also open the flood gates to bots, scammers, and all sorts of horrible things that mods can only barely hold back, especially on the huge subs, political subs, and any minority support subs.

i just went through and turned off the sharing setting on all my main/side blogs each, and here's my thoughts on the whole thing:
it's likely that anything public could have been scraped by the feckless scumbags building most ai systems. however, information regarding tumblr's data sale is rumored to include private, personal, deleted, and/or otherwise illegal data; if for whatever goddamn reason they actually contractually hold themselves to not accessing that data, then that is not nothing. (and, for example, if they are barred from accessing non-public data because of this, that is a big deal actually) (yes, i know, it's complicated. these are bullet points)
if Tumblr Corporate or one of the AI companies is running numbers on this, it's in everyone's favor to count in the "don't scrape me" pile (if for nothing else, then to support advocates on staff telling execs what a bad idea it all is)
there absolutely has to be some fuckery afoot with Tumblr being desperate for income and AIs being desperate for data they may have already scraped, which is to say i think it's in your best interests to have it on record you Do Not Consent.
corollary to fuckery being afoot, even if it comes down to just being demonstrative politically of the rejection of the way capitalism sucks down and spits out every single goddamned thing in its path, i think that the rejection is necessary morally and ethically. sometimes you just have to do something for yourself, even if no one else will see it.
exploitation and manipulation rely on weaseling their way in. despair and apathy falls in their favor. privacy can be "easy" to give up but nearly impossible to reclaim. do not consent in advance until you know what you are consenting to. we do not.

YABI Yet another ByteByteGo Infographic: This one shows the difference between a traditioanl CRUD (create, read, update and delete) system and a more contemporary event sourcing system. Both achieve the same end result but the event sourcing model is more resilient to failure and data corruption. It also scales well in a microservices environment.
Although the diagram does not mention it, the two systems can be used in a complimentary fashion. The CRUD system can be exposed as a typical REST API which is very well understood by developers and quite easy to develop to. Meanwhile, within the organisation the CRUD methods can easily proxy to events. The net result is a modern event sourcing system internally with a low friction REST API for integration.

Here are our Day 3 highlights of the 2024 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Orlando (March 11-15).
Today, I was part of a discussion revolving around advancements in interoperability within the healthcare system, particularly within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Eliza Levy, representing the Lighthouse program, discussed the progress made in interoperability in the past five to eight years, highlighting initiatives like the Patient Health API and the Clinical Health API. These APIs enable veterans to access their health information securely and share it across various applications, improving their healthcare experience. There are over 20 applications already in production.
