Final Fantasy X-2: The Struggle

Recently finished FFX and moved immediately, excitedly into X-2.

Only to come face to face with the combat system.

I was wondering where the demarcation point was for when "Turn-based combat" became the current fast-paced, "do something right this second or else" that is really popular now a days.

It's a struggle, trying to figure out the approach you want to take while things are constantly happening/applying/engaging you. A punishing way to play that highly rewards intricate knowledge and memorization across multiple movesets and classes.

Felt like playing a fighting game and whereas that can be rewarding? Even expressive of skill? I hardly see the reason for it being the only method of play in a Non-PvP game. Found myself floundering to even respond in a given encounter beyond mashing 'attack' , even with the Wait option active.

Showing my age though. An old-head like me recognizes this was always the direction this sort of design was going to take, but for those of us who enjoy thinking about our next step or calculating approaches to fights at a less hectic pace, it's disappointing. Doubly so given I was really enjoying the story and game feel.
