🐈‍⬛️: 2020 was really a year of despair. It was the first time feeling a sense of helplessness after debuting. I could not achieve anything that I had to do or wanted to do so initially I was mentally affected. However many people are able to overcome crises using any method and I tried hard at it too. With that result, in the beginning stages I could not work well, but via the ontact method there was an opportunity to meet carats, and I think that it is fortunate to have such an opportunity. Not just Seventeen but I also think that carats also had a very difficult time. To someone, it might have been a year where they lost something they had, To someone, it might have been a year where they lost an opportunity to challenge something, To someone, it might have been a year where they suffered in health. Sincerely I would like to comfort you and in 2021 I hope that everyone will be happy and healthy, and to fully be happy and enjoy the life that you are given. Although we might be small, we will try to be of help through our music! Let's all try to have a lot of fun and enjoyable things in 2021. I hope that everyone will be able to see each other face to face in close proximity and to share the emotions through music! I hope that next year will be a year where carats will be able to soar with every opportunity and dream that you have. And in 2020 I am thankful for all the support that you have given us. I was happy. Please take good care of me in 2021 too! Also I will also cheer you on. I hope that the despair in 2020 will be hope in 2021🙏🏻 Happy new year (lit. receive a lot of luck in the new year). I was rambling on and on.

Finding Her - Chapter 14

> Director’s Log, 104AC, 8th month, 6th day. I’ve made a start on the repairs to Link’s Purah Pad, but progress is slow. It was pretty badly damaged in the fight, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to save it. To think, just yesterday Link asked me to give it a once over. 

As a stopgap, I’ve booted up a prototype Purah Pad and transferred all of Link’s data and inventory across. Its hardware is barely holding together, so I’ve asked Robbie to return from Hateno Village to help out, but he’s still a day away.  

I’m using the guidance stone console to recover what I can. It looks like most of the data survived, but everything logged in the past week is completely scrambled. I’ll sort it out. I have to. 

I know how much Link’s notes mean to him. Salvaging them is the least I can do.

> Director’s Log, 104AC, 8th month, 7th day - After a day of work and no sleep, I’ve barely made it halfway through the data. I sent Josha off to find me some coffee but Goddess be good, she’d never heard of it. I guess they don’t make it in Kakariko anymore. 

Robbie’s not far away. It’s possible it’s the damage to the Purah Pad itself that causing all the isues. But there’s a lot of noise in the data, more than there should be. Maybe someone’s been messing around with the backend somehow.  

I just hope we can sort this all out before Link gets back. It would help if we knew where he went, and for how long, and why. Scorpis sent scouts, Harth too. They haven’t come back with anything. I told them he’s the Hero of Hyrule for the Goddess’ sake, look harder! 

Okay, I think I’ve nearly cracked the entries made on the day Link and the Sages infiltrated Hyrule Castle. Hopefully something in there will help us find him.

Made it to Lookout Landing with Tulin and Riju. Sidon and Yunobo were already here. All of Hyrule has come for 'Zelda'. 

We’ve spent the morning planning the ‘rescue’. Robbie’s upgraded the Message Medallions and made one for each Sage, so that we can all go to the Castle together and communicate freely. The plan is to hit each main entrance – the Docks, the Library, the Dining Halls and the Gatehouses – all at once. 

I’ve briefed the Sages that I think it could be a trap, but we haven’t told the people of Lookout Landing. They’re so sure it’s her. They have so much hope. Who am I to take that away? 

And there is … another possibility. I can’t promise them Zelda is just an illusion if the opposite is true, but it’s too terrible… What would we do? What would we do, Zelda, if it’s really you causing all these problems in Hyrule, and really you who has turned on us? Goddess, what would we do?

> Director’s Log, 104AC, 8th month, 9th day - I’ve managed to recover more of Link’s logs, but Robbie wants me to hand over the Purah Pad ASAP. He took one look at it and shook his head. You’ve outdone yourself this time, he said. I told him I knew my behaviour was not becoming of a Lab Director. He agreed. 

The logs don’t tell me much. I know Link was anxious about going to the Castle, and I know they had a hard fight once they got there, but when he and the Sages returned… he was in hysterics. And the Sages say they just found him like that.  

But it wasn’t all for nothing. The Sages had good and bad news. The ‘Zelda’ we have been seeing everywhere was actually a puppet of the Demon King Ganondorf, who has survived to this era. It was Ganondorf that they fought in the Castle, and Ganondorf that caused all this Gloom and chaos. But the Sages believe there is still one of their number to be found, a fifth Sage, and that with their power they’ll be strong enough to take him on. But Link… 

He said that he didn’t care about the Sages, or Ganondorf, or Hyrule. He said he had to find Zelda and that he had to do it alone. I told him to cool it, and that we must approach this as a team, but he just kept saying he would let us all down, and that we were better off without him. 

I’ll be honest, I lost my temper. Pull yourself together, I said. The whole Kingdom is relying on you to defeat the Demon King, or we’re all dead, don’t you understand!? Zelda will have to wait, if she isn’t lost already! 

He gave me the darkest look. When he grabbed his Purah Pad to teleport away I…I ripped it right out of his hands. He tried to grab it back and there was a tussle and the next I knew, the Purah Pad was smashed against the ground. There was silence, the worst kind, when you know you’ve done a terrible thing. 

I have to repair it. It’s the only way I can think to apologise. And in the time I’ve been working on it, I’ve felt a judgement on me. Watchful eyes, deciding my guilt. I can’t believe I’m saying this but… I feel there’s something alive inside the Purah Pad, something that’s been rattling around in the circuits and is finally awake. I think it knows what happened here. 

Maybe if I keep recovering what I can, I’ll figure out what it is, and maybe I’ll fix everything else too…

Well. Back to work.

PRH | 09:03 Oh, it was nothing. I didn’t even know you were there. Anyway – WHO ARE YOU? 

UNKNOWN | 09:04 I would prefer not to say.  I was instructed to reveal myself only to the swordsman, Link. I do not know who I can trust.

MNR | 09:07 The Castle, yes.  Ganondorf’s cruelty is as boundless as the sky.

MNR | 09:08 I see what the Purah Pad sees. Thanks to you, I can finally communicate.

PRH | 09:08 Mineru, we need to know what it was.  If Link abandons us, I don’t know what we’ll do. 

MNR | 09:09 I understand, Lady Purah.  It will be easier to show you.

A series of photographs, or perhaps more accurately the memory of them. These images are reconstructed out of others and are more akin to illustrations than true-to-life pictures. The first is an image of Link, stepping into the Inner Sanctum of Hyrule Castle, restored to its former glory. Waiting for him there is Princess Zelda, bright as the sun. She beckons.

Caption: You must understand, Lady Purah, that even the tiniest sliver of hope was enough to tempt him. He had spent weeks knowing that this Zelda was not our Princess, but in that moment, it didn’t matter. 

An image of Link crying out in shock as Zelda grabs him by the throat and throws him to the ground. She then goes limp, as the ghostly image of Ganondorf taunts Link from above. 

Caption: I have never seen such rage. Link would have burnt the whole Kingdom down at that moment if it meant destroying Ganondorf. But the Demon King is cruel as he is cowardly. He would not face Link directly.

The image shifts – the puppet Zelda takes a dagger, and begins to attack at every opportunity. Link dodges her as he fights Ganondorf, unable or perhaps unwilling to retaliate. One of the puppet’s strikes lands across his side, and draws blood. 

Caption: Her betrayal would have been less painful were she not still so graceful, so beautiful. Her image was the one thing Link had wanted to see, and it turned on him with such violence.

Link cries out and, to prevent her murderous action, sinks a blade through her chest. The puppet falls into his arms, blood staining her white gown. Link holds her close until she dissolves into ash. 

Caption: He was inconsolable. The Sages found him weeping on the stone floor, and when they tried to help him stand, his rage boiled over. It’s a miracle he didn’t kill any of them in his rampage. But they managed to restrain him, and had to listen to the Demon King’s threats of destruction while their Hero shook in their arms. 

A final image of Link, back at Lookout Landing, arguing with the Sages and Purah. There is an altercation, and the Purah Pad falls to the ground, broken. Link departs in a huff, and the image fades to white. 

Caption: This was where he left us, or left me rather. The Sages do not hold anything against Link, but they do not understand. They did not see Zelda, in the Inner Sanctum, as he did. They do not know what he was forced to do to save them, even if it was only a puppet. You say he is missing? There is a log of his yet unrecovered that I believe may set you on the path to find him. Go, and find what you seek.

Log date: 10:45. 8th month, 2nd day 104AC Location: Hyrule Garrison Ruins Weather: Sunny

Short stop over in Hyrule Garrison before we head to Lookout. Tulin was flying over Hyrule Field and spotted us so he joined us on foot. One hour in and he was already complaining about how slow we move. Then he and Riju got talking about which Sage’s Vow is the best, and they’ve been hounding me for my opinion. I’ve convinced them that as Hero of Hyrule I don’t have favourites.

Glad Tulin and Riju are with me. Have a bad feeling, about all this. It’s peaceful being alone, but company is good too. Too many memories in Hyrule, and one over every rise and along every path, sometimes. 

One came back to me when we were exploring these ruins. I was young, when I was first sent here, though not sure how young. Did I already have the Sword? It’s all gone now anyway. 

When I was first starting out I was all brute force. The quicker boys, or the ones that didn’t play fair, always had the upper hand. One day I just got fed up. I thought I could dole out some justice. Didn’t know how hard I could hit. The first time I cracked another boy’s skull was the last… but I never really forgot the sound. 

The old me, the original Link, figured out how to quash that anger somehow. The current me is still afraid of what it will do, if pushed too far. I told Riju and Tulin all this, last evening by the fire. I thought they’d be disgusted, but Riju said I had no need for guilt, and Tulin said it was probably an accident anyway. I don’t know. I barely know anything, these days. But I do know I have friends at my side now, and ones I can confide in. Maybe that’s how he figured it out, the Link of times gone by. 

Well, present day Link has to press on, no matter what dread he’s feeling. Hyrule Castle is only a day away, and Zelda is waiting. (As is the gear she made me, hopefully)

> Director’s Log, 104AC, 8th month, 10th day - It’s done. The Purah Pad put back together and given a polish thanks to Robbie and Josha respectively. 

I think I know where Link went now. It’s the only place no one thought to look, because it’s the one place we were sure he’d wouldn’t go. Zelda spoke of it, half a year ago now, and of the treasure she left him. I’m going to go there myself to deliver the Purah Pad to him, and make my apology. 

Before I go: Lady Mineru, I know you can hear me. I’m looking at the Purah Pad right now, all but talking directly to you. I have to wall you off again, Mineru, I’m so sorry. Your awakened presence in the Purah Pad is frying its circuits. I don’t know how you even got in there in the first place. Maybe you’ll tell us someday, but for now our priority must be keeping you alive. I’ll tell Link that the Purah Pad is the key to the fifth Sage when I hand it to him. I’m sure he’ll get you out of there somehow. 

I’ve also decided to delete the images you showed me of what happened in the Inner Sanctum. I don’t know how to tell Link what I know, or if I even should. But I will tell him I know how he’s feeling. We all miss Zelda, so very much. Our world ended twice over when we lost her. I can’t offer him much more than that, but I think that’s okay. Sometimes hope isn’t what you need. Sometimes all you need is to cry, and when that happens, it’s easier if you’re not crying alone. 

Okay, back to work. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. One of them will be our day.

Log date: 17:10. 8th month, 10th day 104AC. Location: Mabe Village Ruins Weather: Cool.

Ah, the relief, having the Purah Pad back. You start to rely on this tech, once it’s part of your day-to-day. And there's no way to lose your memory if you write it all down. It's funny, Purah was the one who found me, in the Throne Room. There wasn’t much to say. We were both pretty sorry. Hugged it out, shed some tears, patched things up. Then I showed her why I'd returned there: the new Champion Leathers, bespoke made by Zelda. 

They fit perfect, a good blend of the old tunic and some new additions. Not sure what prompted the memory of her note about it, but I just knew I wasn’t going to let Ganondorf take that place from us. Zelda and I met there, after all, a long time ago now. 

Head’s still muddy. I don’t like thinking about what happened in there. Nearly let my anger get the better of me, nearly let it hurt my friends. I thought the Sages would abandon me for it but, they stuck by me, and carried me kicking and screaming out of that Castle. It’s so easy to let rage destroy you – when someone holds you back from that, it means something. I’ll find a way to thank them, in time. For now, I've apologised at least three times over. 

After all that, I think I’m not afraid of the anger, anymore. It’s just a part of me, as much as any other feeling. Old Link stamped out his feelings. The new one is going to try and roll with them.  

Heading south. There’s more geoglyphs that way, more ruins to explore, and pirates in Lurelin (apparently). Kind of excited about the last one. It’s been a rough few weeks. I promised the Sages I wouldn’t get too sidetracked, and would definitely find the fifth Sage in no time. But, come on, pirates! Let us have one fun thing to look forward to…

○ 2020 was a really despairing year.

it was the first time i’ve experienced such helplessness since our debut. i couldn’t do even one of the things i needed or wanted to do and i was mentally affected by it at first.

but many people tried their best to overcome their obstacles no matter what. from that, while we weren’t able to do anything initially, through ontact (online) methods we were able to meet CARATs and i felt such a relief from it.

i think that the year must’ve been tiring not only for SEVENTEEN but also for CARATs as well.

someone could’ve lost something they had, and

someone could’ve lost the opportunity for something, and

someone could’ve lost their health.

i sincerely want to give comfort

i wish for everyone to be happy and healthy in 2021 and i wish for everyone to spend the lives they’re given happily.

for us it may be a small thing but we hope our music can be a beginning point to that and we’ll work hard!

let’s creat more fun and joyful things in 2021. so that we can share our music’s emotion as we see each other’s faces in a close space!

Let’s talk: 6th Muster SOWOOZOO

After almost a year without a full on concert, even if it’s once again ontact, we finally got to see Bangtan back on stage for two days to celebrate their 8th anniversary with us. Since 5th Muster Magic Shop in 2019 is, to this day, probably my favorite concert of theirs, I was very curious for the 6th edition, the setlist, the stage design and all the fun and shenanigans that were bound to happen on stage. As avid fan of the EDM festival TOMORROWLAND, seeing the stage design for SOWOOZOO it felt kind of reminiscent of something you’d see at the aforementioned festival, which I mean in the best way possible, it’s high praise in my book. The stage design was centered around our solar system with planets and shades of pink and purple, very pretty, with a purple infinity sign/eight shaped stage.

There was...a lot happening on day two and a bit on day one (I should probably preface this by saying I enjoyed day two more) so this won’t be like a extremely detailed and chronological recount of everything, because that would take forever and I doubt anyone would want that, so instead consider this more of my highlight reel for both days in no particular order. 

One last thing, we watched both days with multi view and I can definitely say I recommend that for any future concerts in this style because most of the really funny moments and interesting details/interactions happened on the side cameras instead of the main one, so if you watched single view, you would’ve missed out on a lot of them.

My absolute highlight for Day One was definitely the OT7 performance of Daechwita. When we found out we’d get the song for SOWOOZOO I was excited, but once I realized that Yoongi can’t be sitting on the throne and start off the song at the same time, and thus the second Yoongi was actually Jimin, my excitement skyrocketed off the charts. A detail I found curious is that JK, Seokjin, Namjoon, Jimin and Tae were all dressed as peasants while Hobi was the only aristocrat besides Yoongi as the king. Furthermore you could say Namjoon got his “revenge” on Tae almost a year later. What I mean is that last year during the funny Dynamite performance in front of the Palace Tae pretended to k*ll Namjoon with his sword and this time Namjoon was the executioner and Tae the one to be executed before rising from the dead and rapping his little heart out. On one of the cameras you could also see Seokjin on the side of the stage fighting a bug while Yoongi is rapping in the foreground.

The second funny highlight of Day One was definitely during So What when JK was chasing Tae around one of the loops of the infinite sign of their stage and not like in a leisurely pace, but rather as though they were trying to win some kind of Olympic race with giant smiles on their faces. It was absolutely hilarious and cute!

Speaking of So What and water, both days were hilarious over all with the members getting drenched for the most part, even if not all of them. And while Jk and Tae were racing on day one, on day two we had Hobi chasing after Seokjin, including this funny moment where Seokjin wanted to sneak up on Hobi but instead got drenched first by Tae and then JK in a double attack.

On Day Two we also got Tae and Seokjin doing their thing again (it’s been a while since we’ve last seen it so that was nice) along with at least JKs hand in the frame and him subtly “holding on to”/pulling on Seokjin’s finger.

Actually, let’s stay with JK for a moment and his tattoos. I remember back in 2019 when we first caught sight of them, though back then he only had those on his hand and a comparatively small number on his arm, and how we joked that from now on he’ll never be able to perform in short sleeves again. I love how two years later we got JK with his whole arm out covered in ink, along with his eyebrow piercing that we now know for certain is real, and not a care in the world what idiots might say. Truly JK is awesome and I’m so happy for him. All the way back in 2014 he said that he wanted tattoos and he turned his wish into reality.

Furthermore, we also got the “confirmation” (as in we could see the tattoos properly though as far as I’m aware none of them have spoken about the tattoos though correct me if I’m wrong since I don’t follow GOT7/Yungyeom) that he really does have matching tattoos with Yugyeom from GOT7 and another one of his 97z friends, the ox with the roman numerals as well as the word TRUTH on his inner upper arm. I know many completely ignore his bond with the 97z’s for whatever reason and yet here they are with matching tattoos and everything. Love that for them!

During Day one with also had Namjoon say “pandemic shit” live and later on Tae, JK and Seokjin create a comedic background during Jimin’s ending ment.

There were a few more subtle moments here and there were Tae and Jimin interacted, like at the very end when Jimin jumped out of their little van and Tae could be seen jumping to put his shoes back on and presumably follow Jimin right before the cameras were cut and the ending screen came in. But, overall, Day One was rather tense and filled with obvious anxiety from the members, which considering how the sound was off and it was their first concert in months etc I wasn’t really surprised by it at all. From Tae’s ending ment on Day Two we know that we were right in thinking that that was the issue, and not how some immediately theorized that vmin had a fight or something along those lines. Turns out it had absolutely nothing to do with that and people, along with the anons in our asks, had worried/felt insecure for nothing.

Firstly, I think the atmosphere today felt better than yesterday. Yesterday, it had been a while since we did a concert, so I was very nervous and thought to myself that I shouldn't make mistakes. Today, I let go of some of that anxiety and had fun. Also, I always repeat how I miss ARMYs, but like Jimin said earlier, saying (or hearing) "I'm having a hard time" gets very tiring. I just want to let that go. I want to enjoy what we are given right now.

Butter vmin Day One vs. Day Two

During the first talking round also some kind of visual exchange happened between Tae and Jimin, which you only saw when keeping an eye on cameras 4, 5 and 6 at the same time, therefore it was something that wasn’t visible on the main cam at all. Jimin was laughing and pointing toward Tae while Tae was smiling and raised his brows the way he does sometimes. Like they said, they don’t need words to understand each other.

During that segment we also had the members sing parts of their solo songs one by one and before they stared there was this cute moment of Jimin going Taehyungie Taehyungie and pointing out how he was the one who got him the bear figures that are on the Winter Bear cover, which Tae confirmed happily. Also while Tae struggled to remember the melody and lyrics to Winter Bear, Jimin quietly did sing a bit of the ending melody as our resident Winter Bear enthusiast. Also Tae singing the words Winter Bear to the melody of Sweet Night, followed by Hobi singing he first line and then Tae also singing a line from it, tiny little wishes do come true sometimes I suppose.

Next we just have to talk about Namjoon because everything he had going on? To quote JK “sexy Namjoon!” Wise words, truly. Also the stylist that decided to cut off the sleeves from his below shirt from Day One so his arm and a bit of the side of his chest was visible? They should get a raise. Also I love how his shirt from Day Two, which matched JKs, was customized with Borahae in hangul added at the bottom.

Speaking of matching, there was a lot of that going, as well as different members wearing other members jewelry and/or clothes, like Yoongi wearing Hobi’s pants from the Chicken Noodle Soup MV, Tae and Jimin both with the giant Teenage Dream pin (considering everything, I mean, the pin isn’t wrong, I don’t think it’d be completely delulu to say they could’ve/might’ve been each others teenage dream) or Tae, Namjoon and Hobi with the chicken hats at the very end for the encore on Day Two.

Can we also briefly talk about the duality of Jimin’s looks on Day One and how essentially that white shirt turned completely pointless at some point due to sweat and water? Things we never thought we’d quite get in such a manner as Victorian Era men ARMY. And yet here we are. Bangtan have well and truly realized how good looking they are and are now using that against us, ha ha.

Anyway, can we talk about this vmin moment during FIRE because I have questions and no answers whatsoever. They bend forward, look and smile at each other and then Tae kisses (?) his finger (the one on which he usually wears his ring as Admin 2 mentioned to me) and I’m left wondering why? What happened here?

Going back a few steps, can we talk about the OT7 version fo Chicken Noodle Soup with Namjoon and Jimin rapping in spanish and JK singing Becky G’s parts? All the dancers? And then each of the members having their little solo dance moment much the way Hobi and his dancers did at the end of the MV? And the fact that they even had the chicken car from the MV as well? An absolute delight! And Becky G was so impressed and happy about it too when she found out about it, it was so, so cute. I’m really glad Hobi and Yoongi pulled the other members into the performances of their solo songs. You could just see how proud both of them were while watching the other members.

Then while everyone else was getting into their respective cars for Telepathy (?), Jimin and JK did a little rock paper scissors battle which was funny.

During the song, at some point, Tae decided he wanted to lean as far out of the car as possible, also using it to high five JK (and potentially also Jimin but I’m not entirely sure anymore) which is just such a Tae thing to do. And only he would manage that without actually somehow falling from the car, though I’m sure Seokjin was likely alert enough that he would’ve tried to catch Tae before he would completely fall.

Then this whole iconic (TM) moment which I couldn’t find a gif of the whole thing, of course, so I will point out to those unaware that JK didn’t decide to pour water onto Jimin (he was likely mean to pour it onto both but only really got water onto Jimin’s mic) but instead it was Seokjin who told him to do it and then giggled as Jimin complained about his now wet mic which he feared might not work anymore, but fortunately it survived without issues.

Though it’s not visible in the gif, it’s cute how Tae had both his arms around Jimin, just like Jimin did around him, and didn’t let him go even while Jimin moved to avoid the water.

Then during the encore we had this little sequence that started out with JK putting his arm around Tae before Jimin dove between them from the back, JK moving aside and Tae immediately putting his arm around Jimin’s shoulder with a smile, and then also Seokjin going them for this cute moment of the four of them. Someone called it “Two Kim’s and their men from Busan” which I thought was really cute. Also at one point Jimin had one had on JKs hip and the other on Tae’s while leaning back half against Tae which looked funny but I think adding a picture of that will finally push me over the image limit, sorry.

From anon: Recency bias is such a thing. Why are people worrying about Namjin because of Muster when we had so many moments recently? I ship a few pairings and I expect moments from, say Vmin on stage because that’s what they do. And we always get J*nk*ok. But Namjin has never really given us lots of moments on stage - award shows, Vlives and interviews seem to be more their “thing” so to speak. I was laughing at a tweet I saw saying Jin avoided namjoon onstage because of how hot he looked and Jin would need to “restrain” himself if he got too close 😂 I can totally relate to this 😂

I agree, during concerts you’ll have a harder time finding Namjoon and Seokjin interacting, though it does happen sometimes. That’s why I wasn’t “worried” at all about their lack of interactions, compared to some other namjinists I saw and heard about. I actually did notice this moment while Tae had his ending ment where I think Seokjin was pointing at his hair in question if Namjoon liked it earning him a thumbs up of approval. Speaking of which, Seokjin’s apple hair was so, so cute, even more so since an ARMY asked for that hairstyle before the concert the previous day so he fulfilled their wish.

During the talking parts in the second halves of both Day One and Day Two we had a lot, and I mean a lot, of Seokjin and JK playing around with each other and just being their usual chaotic selves. Also that below moment in the gif actually continued with JK caressing his own thigh and then Namjoon (much softer than Seokjin) slapping his other thing and JK slapping his own a moment later. And many more such little playful things. They really are a chaos duo.

While Hobi did switch places with Jimin, their usual Mikrokosmos moment didn’t really happen (and neither did it really on Day One) but as the other members already went back into the “van”, vmin stayed behind and had their little moment of talking and being cute. Earlier during You Never Walk Alone there was also a moment when Tae was on cam 5 I believe and enthusiastically singing/rapping along with Hobi while Jimin’s hand appeared and he pretended to be leading Tae’s singing which was an adorable little detail I haven’t really seen anyone mention. There were also several little moments where they would pass each other and smile that were also only really visible briefly in the side cameras.

Lastly, though this doesn’t have anything directly to do with the members, shoutout to the brave staff member who rushed in to put out a little fire on one of the camera cranes with what appeared to be his bear hands. Wow!

Overall, those were just a selection of all the things happening during those two wonderful days, though in reality there were surely far more which I’m just forgetting now. We had a lot of fun watching both days and I’m super happy we got to see the members on stage again though I truly hope that next time they’ll be able to finally see ARMY again, even if only a handful of them, someday.

Interview with Penumbra

Penumbra has 9 stories at Gossamer and 1 at AO3. You can find her complete catalogue here. If you’ve read any X-Files fic, surely you have read at least one of her stories. If not, why not? Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

In a way, yes. There are no precedents for what happened to us with XF fandom, and in the late aughts it all seemed to be over. I got out and never looked back, haha. What really surprised me was to find, all these years on, that there are still X-Philes, although it does make sense they’d seek out those wonderful old fics we wrote.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

Let's be honest, in my Penumbra days I was in a bad situation, the X-Files was a coping mechanism, and Mulder and Scully's relationship an idealization. I latched onto it as only a lonely obsessive can. The X-Files withholds; it opens up metamagical voids; it isolates while simultaneously plunging one into an ethereal community. It’s the tattoo I deserve.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

The X-Files forced me to get online. Computers weren’t a part of my life, so I sneaked into the local university comp labs and figured it out. It was absolutely terrifying, like landing a space capsule, and I didn’t have ID and lived in fear of being caught. The first thing I typed into a computer was ‘X-Files’. So renegade! My heart was pounding and I thought sirens might sound and fire doors engage.

The Fox site had an X-Files forum that was utter pandemonium. Glorious and scary. At that time, I was one of the many Starbucks. The people on atxc seemed way too smart and opinionated. It was hard to even get membership in forums; they were heavily moderated. Mostly I remember lots of email friendships. Sometimes a kindly mature Phile would reach down from the ether with some words of wisdom. A. I. Irving was one. She was dealing with M.S., and writing fic while she still could. It is with an enormous sense of poignancy that I think of the people who were the ‘adults’ of the fandom then. Now I’m ancient in Phile years, but at the time I was just a clueless twenty-something, looking up to all those greats.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

Wow, as WE ALL KNOW, discovering X-Files fanfic was a revelation. Whew! I thought: stand back, the professionals are handling this. The authors were about as human as Greek gods. Eventually it dawned on me that anyone could write it.

The first fic I wrote was HORRIBLE. I put a link to it on my site, so that people can get a little hit of schadenfreude. Those early stories were on shaky footing. I had no confidence in myself. I felt intimidated writing about sophisticated, highly-educated career people when I was none of those things. Heck, I was cleaning motel rooms. I'm still none of those things, but, through Mulder and Scully, I've lived that life a little bit, and it was fun.

The third story, 'Contact High', was all sex and drugs. I’d done acid and shrooms, so finally, a subject I could assert some authority over! I decided to just go for it. That abandon was a breakthrough, and Penumbra came into being. But there was so much going on inside me, it was hardly harnessable; as stories like ‘Vespers’ and ‘Black Hole Season’ show, it was like getting on a horse that you can't control and just clinging to its neck as it gallops.

This time around, in my latest incarnation, I feel that I have a better perspective on Mulder and Scully, more of an even footing. I’ve been through a lot, and in 'Hotel-Zero', I wanted to demonstrate not just how to survive, but how to survive as yourself. I wanted to maybe create a sort of handbook for how to keep your head above water. Life is hard for all of us, people are hard on us. You need to keep a singular perspective on yourself, and allow no one modify it.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

I’ve had two separate experiences, with a seven-year hiatus, and I wouldn't have missed either of them for the world. Belonging to an obscure hive mind has been one of the most interesting and rewarding (not to mention super-secret) facets of my life, and that will always be my overall takeaway as an X-Phile.

However, as the fandom imploded there was understandable backlash against the whole Penumbra thing. The panegyric was just too much, the style definitely overblown. I posted 'Fathoms Five' as things were melting down, and there was real outrage. People were boycotting it as a political statement. Oh, we were all so raw—the X-Files was ending and IWTB was a heartbreaker. At that point I’d been working on 'Heuvelmans’ for a couple of years and was forced to admit I couldn’t finish it, nor would it be well-accepted if I did. So you can sort of see the baggage I was carrying when I left the fandom, not to mention the creative angst.

Three things brought me back:

1. They started filming the Revival. I flipped out at the thought of seeing Mulder and Scully again.

2. @perplexistan contacted me, and I realized there was a frisky pack of Philes on tumblr. Philes are my people, that’s just a fact.

3. I read @teethnbone’s ‘Das Ding’, which zapped at my temples like thunderstorm electrodes. So, there I was, in a trance, making the Devil’s Tower out of mashed potatoes.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

No, I would consider it a sacrilege. I have loved and admired many other television series, but writing X-Files fic for Philes has been too extraordinary an experience to dilute. I have a zillion obsessions, but for only one am I fannish.

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

I just finished up that monster oldie called ‘Heuvelmans’ On the Track’, under the name The Mythopoeic. It’s on AO3. I have a couple of obscure side projects with a writing buddy. And I have another old fic called ‘Blue Ruin’, a cancer arc fic I’d like to finish someday.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

It is very nice. People are gentle and welcoming. Philes used to criticize stories mercilessly and authoritatively, but you don’t see that a lot anymore.  I have plenty of outside projects, so I am trying to ease away, you know, like taking off your shoes to slip out of the room after the baby’s fallen asleep.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?

I’d like each one of you to know that your belief in me changed my life and saved me a thousand times over.

Idia has never been a people person and he has admitted this, several times. The only things that usually preoccupy his mind isvthe machinery in his room and his schoolwork. The only other person he actually likes is his little brother and anyone else is usually out of his comfort zone. If he were to ever have a s/o there is a good chance that he would meet them online and it would take him a good while to actually open up. The other way I can see it happening is if Ortho kept bringing s/o in to the dorm and Idia slowly but surely starts to become attracted to them.

And dear Hades, the boy is beyond terrified.

He has zero relationship skills and with each passing day Idia's paranoia will only grow more and more. He just wants to curl in to a hole deep in to the ground, far beyond s/o's reach. He never asked for this, Hell, he never even wanted this! All he wants is for this bothersome feeling to go away, it's just waisting his time. His mood rapidly changes to constant paranoia, to fear and then to sorrow. A part of him feels as though he isn't good enough for s/o while the other part os just so frigging done with this nonsense. Ortho will of course notice his brothers shift in behaviour and he will catch on that Idia has a crush... And he honestly couldn't be happier!

He will pester his brother with all sorts of questions about the object of his affections, who they are, what do they like, what are their hobbies and so much more. Idia will of course just lose it and just lock himself in his room to sulk but Ortho will take matters in to his own hands. He will very quickly find his elder brothers s/o and befriend them. He is very sweet towards them but he is always so insistent on bringing them to the Ignihyde dorm rooms. He gathers all of s/o's information skillfully and swiftly and soon enough he will come running back to Idia.

Idia shall, of course, freak out at first but after a few minutes of Ortho calming him down he will begin to see the hard work his baby brother had put in just to help him... And he won't lie, the information gathered sure is beyond useful... He is still a bit torn about the fact that Ortho always brings s/o in to the dorm but deep down he appreciates it. He won't talk to his s/o at first though, he will kind of just stare at them from afar, never breaking eye ontact. If they do end up speaking, it will probably be s/o who does most of the talking. Topics can range and vary and Idia can be very responsive to certain things, others not so much. He can actually be really fun to talk to but it's just so hard to get him there, you know?

But once he does open up Idia shall become much more talkative and just chatty in general. His more obsessive side will start to then show as he is very hesitant to let s/o go. Why should they leave when they have everything here? They have food, candy especially, sweet Ortho and... him. Right?

Korea is on fire with its neologisms based on the word ‘contact’ right now. At work I kept seeing the word ‘untact’ in descriptions of things that are not being done face-to-face because of COVID. The first time I saw it, I was like, what on earth....? This from someone who normally has great English?? No! It’s a lovely new Konglish word for non-contact and it’s all the rage.

Now my local neighbourhood is calling its annual festival ‘ontact’. Which must be a play on warm (온, pronounced on) and untact. So its ‘warm-hearted  non-contact’ lol

01. Intro : Devil is in the detail

Hhhhdnnjd I love Seoho's and Keonhee's voices in this. It isn't my favorite ONEUS intro, but I still love it. Plus the "Ravn Spit Out Flame" is in this, which makes me happy. I was sad when it wasn't in the title.

02. 반박불가 (No diggity)⭐

It isn't my favorite ONEUS title track, but I do like it. This song gives me so much energy. Makes me want to fight someone. Or set something on fire. Or punch something. It makes me feel very strong and pumped up. I like it.

03. 식은 음식 (Leftover)

It's so fun! It reminds me of Dizzy! I already saw the choreo from Ontact (everyone should see it, it should still be on YouTube). It's such a cute song! I love Leedo's part in the first chorus, and the prechorus is pretty!

04. 완벽하지 않아도 괜찮아 (Incomplete)

Leedo vocals at the start 🥺... So goddamn pretty... Seoho's voice is so pretty... his and Hwanwoong's voice goes so well with it, Woong in the second verse especially... and Dongju at the start of the bridge... ughhh I started imagining a pretty choreo for this song

Dongju at the start?? Seoho really has such a pretty voice... and Hwanwoong... And Geonhak vocals 🥺 hello... And Keonhee and Youngjo... this song is so much prettier than I thought it was gonna be. The instrumentals are so pretty! I love the music so much

Leedo starts it off... oh gosh, Ravn's rap with the music is so calming, and then Seoho's vocals. Keonhee's voice in the prechorus--already fell in love with it in the Highlight Medley. The music gives me a weird, almost nostalgic vibe. Sounds like... all the pretty songs from the early 2010s. Please, the little bit of Dongju was nice, he needs more lines. 😭 And the one time Seoho harmonized with Youngjo a bit. 🥺

08. Lion Heart

Ooo, not my usual type but I did like it. Maybe it'll grow on me more in the future. I love the music, the chorus is cool. The second verse, which we heard from the Highlight Medley is so cool sounding!

09. What You Doing?

~Cosmic~ Anyway, Hwanwoong and Seoho at the start stole my heart. The chorus with Keonhee's voice is very charming! I love it! And Ravn did so well! Fits well. I didn't think I'd love the song, but I like it more than I thought I would!

10. 눈부시게 빛이 나더니 그 날 (I.P.U) ⭐

Ugh, the vocals are so pretty. Seoho and Keonhee especially for me in this song. And Ravn's rap. And Leedo's vocals!!! Oh my gosh! 🥺 Seoho has such a pretty voice! And Dongju's part was small but oh so pretty! Again, Seoho has a gorgeous, soulful, pretty voice!

Final Thoughts - ∞/10

All four members of the vocal line thoroughly wrecked me with their vocals. Seoho hasn't been this high on my bias list since Lit, and Hwanwoong since maybe Twilight. Seoho really has such a pretty voice... and Keonhee... his voice works so well... also I had no idea how much I liked Dongju's voice paired with Youngjo's. The songs that ended up being my favorites, I already knew they would be from the Highlight Medley. However, I liked every single song more than I thought I would.
