my guide to lesbian anime both canonic and subtextual
(won’t include every lesbian anime ever, this is a personal list)
the canonic-gay section:
revolutionary girl utena
Tumblr media
nothing before or since has ever done it like this. trigger warnings for everything imaginable. loads of homosexuals in this one. gender commentary, fairytale allusions, a lot of kids who are having a hard time growing up and moving beyond their pasts. sword lesbians.
flip flappers
Tumblr media
the problematic favourite, in that there’s at least one uncomfortable sexualised shot each episode (roughly speaking; some have none and one has even more, unfortunately), so be warned. but at its heart flipflap is about repressed cocona going on adventures with outgoing and expressive papika, and their exploration of various fantastical lands/inner worlds of people they meet. hugely inventive and pretty, and a core thread is cocona discovering she’s gay.
aoi hana (‘sweet blue flowers’)
Tumblr media
the comfort lesbian show, with not a romantic relationship at its heart, but a friendship between two childhood friends who meet again, both of whom are gay (though only one realises this during the show’s run, as it’s based on a manga). one of them dates an upperclassman at her school, and there’s various gay and bi side characters. it’s just very wholesome, lovingly animated, sweet and sometimes painful stuff.
bloom into you
Tumblr media
I controversially do not care that much for bloom into you, but as the best, high-production, non-skeevy yuri show in years - that is based on a manga by a woman - it’s worth mentioning. late-bloomer girl dreams of romance, though has never felt it, and finds affinity with a girl who similarly is disinclined to date. that is, until said girl says she fancies her. genuinely moving exploration of developing gay identity at times, only downside is my personal disinterest in the black haired girl. some weird ‘heightened’ moments that feel inauthentic and titillating do arise, but it’s very few - to the point where some would disagree with me on my reading of it, I’d imagine.
sailor moon
Tumblr media
the bits which the lesbians are in, etc. it’s a classic. I haven’t watched all of it myself because I don’t care much nor do I have nostalgia for sailor moon, but it’s one of the most notable examples of a butch/masc lesbian in anime, so that’s nice.
o maidens in your savage season
Tumblr media
nerdy teenage girls who are part of a literature club make it their quest to discover sex and dating, in various ways (unfortunately, not all of them dealt with well… teacher/student foolery that is fortunately abandoned before it gets worse but is nonetheless handled with mixed results, imo). mostly though it’s hilarious, sweet, silly, and there’s a gay girl in it, but I won’t spoil which one. adults predating on children is also handled much, much better in another of the show’s storylines, and I do appreciate it for trying to tackle that difficult subject matter.
oniisama e (‘dear brother’)
Tumblr media
an oldie, based off a shoujo manga by one of the greatest (riyoko ikeda). there’s a central relationship to root for (better articulated in the manga), but it’s mostly just what if we were messy depressed lesbians at an all-girls school and we were also melodramatic and mean as hell.
revue starlight
Tumblr media
what if we were at an all-girls dramatic arts school and engaged in utena-like duels to become the top performer? main implicitly gay couple with canonic side gay couples. it’s quite cute. also worth watching if you like takarazuka in any way (prestigious all-female japanese theatre troupe), because the main conceit of the school is very much based on that idea.
the gay-themes section:
sound! euphonium (season one)
Tumblr media
in which director naoko yamada’s awesome legacy of writing lesbians and then saying “who’s to say though, ha ha” continued (she did it already with a side character in tamako market). this one is known as the gaybait to end all gaybait, but hear me out: the first, and best, season, is not only a fantastic self-contained story with many great characters and plot points, but it’s main character is undoubtedly lesbian-coded and even has a love interest you can argue about. frankly I think she’s gay-coded throughout the whole show (even when she dates a guy for two minutes), but this feels very “I wanted to focus on this compelling relationship between two female characters but the adaptation’s success meant we had to revert back to the source material in later seasons”. what we got from this is perhaps my favourite lesbian anime of all-time, following utena.
a place further than the universe
Tumblr media
this show is about four girls who join an expedition to antarctica, and what if I told you they’re all great, believable dorky teenage characters, and they exist in a well-written and thematically satisfying show… and there’s nice lesbian implication between one of our adult female protagonists and her old (deceased; not a spoiler) friend who was the main teen girl’s mother. there’s some sad here, obviously.
puella magi madoka magica
Tumblr media
the well-known, much beloved deconstruction of the magical girl genre is also pretty gay, as it happens (so gay in fact it started a trend of gay-coded pink+black magical girls). it’s not a particular favourite of mine, but it’s visually one of the most notable anime productions ever, so it’s well worth seeing just for that.
NANA
Tumblr media
the 2000s manga+show about the two twenty-year-olds who meet on a train and discover they’re both called nana is also pretty gay! to the point where there are heated fandom debates about nana komatsu’s (pink one) possibly being a lesbian. they both have many relationships with guys, but it’s their bond that forms the heart of the show, and the bisexuality (or, who knows, homosexuality) of the leads is pretty undeniable. to the point where you’ll get blasted on the nana subreddit if you try and suggest otherwise.
the wild-card section:
keep your hands off eizouken!
Tumblr media
this is a show about three oddball girls who start a club to create anime, but have to pose as the film club instead for various reasons. it’s not even subtextually gay, I just personally think that all three of the leads are gay and the whole thing feels like a very female-centred creative endeavour. hugely fun watch, and very high production values. you wouldn’t regret seeing it.
skip & loafer
Tumblr media
these two you see here are side characters. this show is actually about mitsumi, the greatest female protagonist of this kind of shoujo-esque slice of life show, who moves from the countryside to tokyo for high school. here she meets many a misfit, including the pretty blonde and the nerd girl who have undeniable chemistry and form one of the most popular pairings in the show. it’s just a good time.
chihayafuru
Tumblr media
I’d get in trouble for this, because the primary romance factor in the show is a famed heterosexual love triangle with chihaya at its centre and her two male childhood friends at the side. but go with me on this. chihaya is oblivious to romance and feminine socialisation, she is obsessed with a card game and with her equally dorky dark-haired rival… she’s anime’s greatest autistic lesbian lead. and you get more than what you pay for, because the two boys I mentioned? a lot of gay stuff going on there too.
the big-screen-cinematic section:
the adolescence of utena
Tumblr media
revolutionary girl returns in the sequel of a lifetime, slightly older (sixteen, say) and gayer than ever, to escape this place with the love of her life. cue the impromptu dance sequence (with stars and rose petals)!
liz and the blue bird
Tumblr media
the naoko yamada directed gay cinematic universe continues with a gorgeous film starring two of the side characters from sound! euphonium’s second season (not necessary to watch beforehand). that means it has plausible deniability whilst being so crazily gay it’s almost some kind of joke. this is a highly detailed, laser-focused character study of two girls in their high school band club and their ever more strained relationship. yamada never misses.
the summer
Tumblr media
this is korean! it’s about two girls who meet at school and start dating in secret, what happens as they grow up and move to seoul, and how their relationship changes and strains when met with the conservatism of contemporary korean society. it was sweet and like aoi hana above for japanese girls, felt pretty frank to the experiences I’d imagine young korean lesbians might have.
puella magi madoka magica: rebellion
Tumblr media
if you’re a fan of the show, you probably don’t talk about this movie. sure, it’s a visual feat, sure, it’s insanely entertaining, but it’s also frustrating and upsetting and potentially undermines the neatness of the original as a perfectly-crafted story. BUT. kyouko/sayaka becomes all but canon in it, and everything else aside, that’s all that really matters. but you should definitely watch the show beforehand.

im sorry but love IS the main theme in jjk, no not just in the movie but ALL of jjk.
dont believe me? fuck it, fine, i'll explain
lets start it out with the obvious, jjk 0. this is the prequel to the actual anime and manga series (although i guess actualy isnt the correct term... you get the point) and it starts all because of yuuta and rika who were both children when they fell in love.
rika gives yuuta a ring and tells him that its a promise ring and that its a promise that they'll be together forever.
yeah rika DIES
but dw, she gets turned into a curse... by yuuta, but it was on accident so... yeah fun-
then geto shows up and basically attacks the school and yuuta and rika save it using LITERALLY the power of love. then soon enough gojo ends up telling yuuta this 'love is the greatest curse of all'
yeah love is literally the main theme of that, yuuta's love is what cursed rika and caused her to become a curse but what of gojo? why is he saying 'love is the greatest curse of all'?
well soon after this he mentions his 'one and only' and its heavily implied (actually canon) that its suguru geto, YEP the mf who attacked the school. now lets take it back a few notches shall we <33
gojo and geto went to school together where they became extremely close friends (implies lovers as they do a TON of romantic stuff in japanese culture such as giving geto second button to gojo aka the one close to his heart and them riding on a bike together which is illegal in japan but its also considered romantic to break the rules with your lover so like??!?! yeah theyre gay)
soon after they have a mission to protect the star plasma vessel and imma spare you the details lets just say that it goes HORRIBLY wrong and it ends up causing a rift between gojo and geto. gojo ends up awakening becoming a better version of himself for it and is trying to show it to geto. yet he doesnt know that what happened with him and how he basically got a power up did NOT happen to geto.
geto was left to question who he was fighting for anymore and this caused him to... get a little silly and kill an entire village anyways the kfc breakup happens yada yada and remember that these two were really really REALLY close friends at least and most likely lovers (how i'll be referring to them from now on)
now what day did geto attack the school aka the night of 1000 demons parade? december 24, the same date which is the most romantic in japan (to my knowledge) and the same date which gojo killed him... YEAH THAT SHIT WAS PLANNED
but lets move onto something a little more... recent.
ITAFUSHI!!!
honestly my fav ship and why im all writing this in the first place. their love for each other was literally so great that they killed the king of curses. the whole reason that megumi locks in is because he realizes that yuuji is gonna be sad if he dies and that he doesnt want yuuji to be sad
these two care for each other so much and its basically shown at the start of the manga, how megumi sees yuuji and saves him without hesitation, he just doesnt want to see a good person die.
he then says 'what if someone you saves kills another in the future' and when yuuji asks him that megumi cant answer. and when he can yuuji literally flips back and kills himself in order to save megumi and mind you he was fearing death a few seconds ago, saying how he didnt want to die yet and how he had regretted eating that stupid finger
yet when it came to saving megumi all of the sudden that didnt matter anymore, in fact when sukuna offered to bring him back he said no because he didnt want sukuna hurting more people... speaking over that-
SHIBUYA!!! yeah sukuna takes over yuuji and kills a bunch of people- kinda ironic seeing how megumi asked yuuji 'what are you gonna do if someone you save kills those later?' even MORE ironic that before that its revealed that yuuji swallowing the finger caused a bunch of parts of sukuna to wake up and start killing people and both of them realized this and went 'imma not tell the other cause thatll make them sad'
anyways megumi gives his bf a pep talk and then BAM megkuna and yuuji goes batshit against sukuna <3
anyways before megumi separates from sukunas body he says that he's gonna try living for someone else just one more time and its pretty obvious that this person is yuuji.
ALSO fun little thing.
love the greatest curse of all won against the king of curses, sukuna. sukuna who refused to feel or care for human emotions. aint that something?

Flipping the Script: Leviathan Progression (Human World AU)
Previously: After a baggage mishap at the airport, you and your cosplay group found the perfect replacement for your Lord of Shadows! Rejoice, as now a demon has your number! (Not that you know that)
Contents: Second person (you), fluff, MC is an otaku, MC is down bad, mutual pining between idiots
Part One, Part Two (You are here), Part Three (Coming Soon)...
~♡♡♡~
Levi met up with you and your team for the photoshoot that day, and it couldn’t have gone better!
As promised, you spent your first visit to the vendors room with him as part of his compensation for helping you out. What you hadn’t expected was for him to be quite so funny during your time together.
He had an infectious energy about him… Especially when talking about the shows and hobbies that he liked to indulge in. Coincidently, they happened to line up with a lot of your interests as well, so there was a nearly endless conversations between you two.
By the time the rest of your team tracked you down to do a scheduled fan signing, you and Levi had already gotten lunch at a themed café and exchanged online handles to play games together back at the hotel. Then they had to sit and suffer through you rambling about just how sweet and hilarious he was...
Even after the convention, the two of you kept up a very steady contact. Weekly game nights were an absolute must and he occasionally would join chats with you if you decided to stream. Leviachan, as you'd happily begun to call him, became a fast regular in your DMs and on your chat history.
You were surprised that for all of Levi's skill, he didn’t have the same kind of social media presence that you had to share his cosplay. You offered multiple times to bring him in for collabs together, but…
Well, Levi was always super cagey with you about just WHERE he lives or even where he was born in! When you first asked, he said it was, “J-just a small place somewhere out there! Nowhere important.”
To some extent, you understood his desire for privacy, so you've never really pried, but it still felt so odd that he wouldn’t even give you a country… Not even a time zone! Whenever you wanted to call him, he’d always just “up.” Did he ever sleep??
What information you could gain from him was mainly family-related. He had six brothers, no Mom, and an estranged Dad. The one you saw on the day you met him, Malcolm, was the second oldest and their relationship seemed… complicated.
It wasn’t until you both decided to do a video call to play a game he sent you that you got to first meet the others...
You had your computer booting up the copy of Demonlands 2 that Levi sent for you to play while the window for your video call rang for him to pick up. It was another typical Friday game night for you, though you decided not to stream in favor of having a chill night of fun with Levi. He had been talking up this as one of his comfort games for a long while, though you had never heard of it yourself, so when he offered to give you copy you sprang for it! Over the months you’d gotten to know the shy otaku, you’d learned to put paramount trust in his recommendations. He really knew his stuff, anime AND game-wise, so listening to him was like having your own personal guru.
You slid your headphones on and got comfortable in your chair right as Levi’s end picked up and the corner of your monitor displayed the smiling face of the man who'd quickly grown to become your best friend. The ambient blue light of his room tinged the violet in his hair a shade of indigo, but left the sunset shade of his eyes more or less intact. You'd already expressed some jealousy to Levi over his sweet setup... what parts of it he's been willing to show you anyway. He'd given you the digital tour of his figurines, manga, and games collections, as well as showing you little Henry. You had no idea someone would commit to an aquatic aesthetic so hard that they’d actually sleep in a bathtub, but at the same time it felt so very… Levi. Nothing in his bedroom was like anything you'd ever seen before, like, who actually sleeps next to an aquarium tank?? Maybe his family were the eccentric type…
“Hey, Y/n! Sorry that I'm picking up late.”
“No, it’s fine! I was grabbing a snack earlier. Did something happen?”
“No, nothing important.”
You watched Levi start checking over his monitor through the screen while mindlessly twisting the black wire of your headphones between your fingertips. When you first started to play games together, these little silences between you would feel awkward and Levi would scramble to get find anything he could to fill them. To alleviate the tension, you’d play a shared playlist of your favorite otacore or ani-songs to make him more comfortable, but for the last month or so he hadn’t needed it as much. The silences were now… pleasant. You could take your time with each other like real friends could and it felt pretty nice.
Most of your offline friends knew how embarrassingly down bad you'd become for this guy. You hoped your cosplay audience hadn't picked up on it yet, but there would always be those comments that point out how you gush about him whenever he offered you a new accessory for your outfits… If you guys had a ship name, you didn’t know it'd be yet.
Not that you had any ideas about it or anything. You? Ship yourself with your best friend?? Absolutely not! Like, who would actually do that-?
“Y/n?”
“Huh??”
Levi's voice interjected itself into your thoughts, making you fumble with the headphone wire as you recovered.
“Hey, are you alright? You were just staring off there…”
Now back in reality, you stuttered out an embarrassed apology to your confused friend and try to smile it off.
“Oh yeah, Levi, I'm alright. It's just a long week, so I'm ready for some gaming!”
You prayed that the bubbly feeling in your chest wasn't also showing on your face when you watched his expression light up. That determined smile was more than half of the reason you agreed to these game nights of yours when he first brought up the idea. He took to giving you a good time as passionately as a great DM runs their campaign and you appreciated the hell out of him for it... Having a life on social media and being in the public eye could absolutely drain a person, but with Levi you could just relax and recharge with the stuff you loved…
“Okay, Y/n, do you have everything running?”
“Yep! Got it all installed last night.”
“Great! Go ahead and open the co-op menu and-"
His voice got cut off in your headphones by the sound of a sharp knock coming from behind him. Levi's eyes briefly grew to the size of saucers as they darted over his shoulder then back at your image onscreen.
“Levi...? What's wrong?”
“Nothing! Uh… J-just a second!”
You watched him lurch over his desk and fumble with his mouse until eventually the camera feed cut to black. You were definitely getting concerned, since Levi had almost never reacted that way to an outside noise before, but soon your worry morphed into curiosity. A sing-song voice called out through your headphones, one you had never heard before, and after checking the chat window you realized that, yep…
Levi forgot to mute the call.
“Oh Levi~! What made you think we're done talking? Is that your little friend in there??”
The man's voice was at a higher pitch than Levi's and he sounded pretty… annoyed. Or at least insistent about something. You heard the sound of door hinges swinging open, followed by Levi's much more exasperated tone.
“Go away, Asmo-gak! Why are all of you here!?”
A new voice joined the fray, this one was much softer than the other two. They spoke at a languid pace, slow like honey pouring from a bottle. Did he just wake up or something...?
“We thought you've been talking to a computer this whole time, but Mammon says that they're a real person…”
“Yeah, I’ve seen'em too! Tell'em Levi!”
That one you knew had to be Malcolm! There was no mistaking the energetic punch to his words, but who the heck was Mammon?? You didn’t recall meeting him too…
“Ugh, yes! They're real, but no you can’t all see them! We just started a new game, so go away!!”
“Uhm, Levi?”
Your question must have come through the speakers because, for moment, the sudden silence on the other end was deafening… then all hell broke loose at once.
Another voice spoke up now, one that sounded a lot deeper and almost velvety coming through your headphones.
“Was that them just now?”
Another responds, also deep, but muffled? As if they're trying to speak past a mouthful of marshmallows…
“Mmnph-‘ink so-mmmgh…”
The higher voice chimed in well over them both.
“Oh, we should go say hi!! What do you think, Levi? You can't keep teasing us like this!”
The blank screen on your monitor was starting to kill you seemingly as much as it was them… You desperately wanted some kind of explanation, but more importantly…!
“Levi, who's over there? Are those your brothers?!”
Your ears perked from the a collective gasp you heard on the other end, then the excitable one spoke again.
“They know about us???”
“NO!! N-not everything! Please leave-!!”
You'd be lying if you said that Levi's shout hadn't hurt you right then… It felt like a little crack went tink right on your heart! Had he been keeping you a secret from them this whole time? Was he embarrassed? Or did he not trust you to know too much about himself…? Was it your platform that he was scared of??? You had never broadcasted anything he hadn’t given permission about ahead if time… You wouldn't dare to dox him!! Though you could understand if that was his reasoning, the secrecy still kind of hurt…
“W-wait, Levi, I’ve always wanted to see more of your family...! Why not let them in? Please? We can still play right afterwards!”
“Huh?? But Y/n-!!”
“You heard'em, Levi! Let us through!”
A mass of shuffling filled your headphones while you waited with baited breath. You had even leaned in so close to your monitor that when the window flashed back on, you were briefly blinded by all of the colors at once! It took a few moments for you to make out all five pairs of eyes staring back through the screen. Each boy seemed to be crammed up against Levi's computer desk like lab students all forced to share the same microscope... To your surprise, not a single one of them looked like Levi or even like each other! You probably should have guessed, considering Malcom (who was seated center stage, having stole Levi's gamer chair for himself) looked nothing like him before, but you wouldn’t have guessed all 5 would differ quite as drastically… Would the sixth look that different as well?
“Uhm… hi?”
You tried to smile again to make a good impression, but it was hard to do while feeling like a living petri-dish. You were used to having eyes on you, but this was another level. Perhaps it was the added pressure of not wanting to look bad in front of a good friend's family, but it also could have also been the sheer intensity of their gaze… Levi could get this way too sometimes and it always felt like his orange-hued irises could almost see right through you... Especially if he just lost a game. In those times, his intimidating edge gave you a bit of a thrill. It'd feel like you just bested a dangerous beast in combat, but against ten eyes it was overwhelming… Each one bore right through you as if to examine your very soul…
“Huh,” a blonde one peering over Malcom's right shoulder was the first to speak up. His eyebrows were raised practically off of his forehead in surprise. “So they are real, then.”
The shortest boy, squished up against Malcom as if trying to steal center frame, clasped his hands over his heart and cooed back towards the doorway.
“Aww, Levi, look at that! You actually have a friend now!! And a real cutie, too~ Hello, hun!”
“Yeah, but why do they look like a human…?”
You watched guys instantly stiffen up as all eyes shifted towards a dark-haired boy clutching a spotted pillow just barely in view. It was hard for you to see his face, since it was only half on screen and even then some of it was behind his pillow, yet you could detect something… cold in it. He sounded annoyed, but you couldn’t place why… Was he seriously expecting you to be an AI or something?
To your surprise, the pillow guy was swiftly yanked out of frame and replaced by Levi, though you couldn’t see much of his face either. Only that he was holding onto the pillow guy's sleeved arm rather tightly as he spoke.
“Of course they're human! Not a 2D person or just a computer, but human like the rest of us… Right?”
You'd never heard such a dark edge come over Levi’s tone before. Not even in jest! It must have been rare for his brothers to hear as well, because most stared at him with equally shocked expressions. The arm in Levi's grasp yanked itself away and you heard footsteps head towards the door… but the other brothers stayed where they were. Another long silence flooded in, somethibg that felt far more uncomfortable than any you had experienced with Levi before, until a (frankly) massive dude chewing on a huge slab of jerky spoke up behind Malcolm.
“If they're nice to Levi, that's enough for me.” He inhaled the rest of the jerky into his mouth (which you didn’t quite detect him chewing) before he was already smiling at you with the kind of warmth that you'd see saved up only for the sappiest of shojo scenes. “Hello, thank you for being Levi's friend.”
The rest of the boys all exchanged glances with each other, then a similar kindness took over their faces too. Gone were the piercing stares of just a moment ago, and instead you only felt a welcoming energy radiating out from your monitor. As if sensing the change too, Levi finally came into view of the camera. He leaned down by Malcolm in the spot the pillow guy left open, grinning at you in that way only he really could.
“Y/n... These are my brothers.”

Apologies if this is personal and you don't want to answer (or you don't want to answer for any other reason!); if that is the case no worries. But anyway by virtue of the fact that I am (sort of) a linguist I often get curious about people's language situation. You speak English obviously but spent your childhood in Korea, and often went to the English language book store while there? What is like, your personal linguistic history? Like, what language(s) did you grow up speaking, which ones did you learn later and when, etc? How fluent do you consider yourself in both English and Korean? If you don't mind my asking.
Haha, this is a dream scenario for me (someone asking about a situation I find fascinating about myself because I've never met anyone else with that background, but is probably boring to most people). Here's a longer story than you probably want:
My parents emigrated to the US before I was born, stayed for a decade, and moved back to Korea right after I was born. They're conversational in English, and my sister (12 years my elder) is fluent. Speaking English is valuable in Korea, so they raised me to be bilingual. They taught me the alphabet, bought me English language children's books, and sent me to an English language school run by Christian missionaries for preschool, kindergarten, and part of first grade.
My sister left the country when I was three to go to a boarding school in the US, but she came back every year for holidays, spoke exclusively in English to me, and refused to let the conversation move on if I mispronounced a word.
When I was six, my parents moved further away from the missionaries' school and switched me to a neighborhood public elementary school. At this point I was mildly more fluent in English than in Korean. Reading (English books) was a self-sustaining reaction I spent every free hour on. There were fewer interesting Korean books for children. Korea had industrialized ~30 years prior, and the hangeul writing system had only been in full use ~50 years at that point. As far as I knew, there was no CS Lewis of Korea, no Tolkien, no Diana Wynne Jones. In Korean bookstores, many of the prominent books on display were translated – The Little Prince was popular for children, and there was a children's fiction fad around another French author (who afaik never made a splash in the States) whose name I forget.
So I'm reading like 10 hours a day, at the dinner table, on the escalator when my mom takes me while she's shopping, sometimes under the desk at school flipping the pages with my toes, because the teachers don't care. (This is a huge W as far as I'm concerned for Korea – public school teaching is a somewhat competitive and standardized government job, it attracts people who lack great passion for either teaching or controlling children.) Meanwhile my peers don't like me much because my vibes are rancid: I have a compulsive laugh tic I haven't gotten under control, and I don't seem to understand their preferences very well or actively seek to understand them. Fair enough. I have one friend at any given time and she's usually on the fence about me.
When I'm old enough to take the train on my own, some weekends my mom gives me 5000 won for the train ticket + lunch, and I go into Seoul to visit one bookstore that has a 10-shelf English section. I pick a book, spend the day finishing it, and go home. Instead of my English language skills lapsing and being overtaken by the language I'm immersed in, I'm going deeper into English. Which increased the disconnect between me and my peers. I remember overhearing a conversation about an anime (The Black Cat) and eagerly asking if they'd also read the Edgar Allen Poe short story. I wanted to much to talk about shared interests, but it didn't occur to me to "invite myself into their interests" by picking up the manga they talked about.
...this all made my childhood weird in ways that have shaped me hugely but are difficult to describe. I was isolated and not, happy and not, stimulated and not, developing unevenly...
At eleven I discover fanfiction.net, probably one of the most impactful events of my life. I'm running out of physical books, I've read everything five or ten times, but then the computer! has made a deal with me! It contains INFINITE LITERATURE, although sometimes people seemed to misspell things on purpose and I didn't know why. (I had, approximately, never encountered misspellings in written material before.) In return the internet would take MY SOUL FOREVER although I didn't realize this at the time. I post a 100K Harry Potter epic over the next year where Harry is trained by a special assassin cult that lives under a mountain.
My parents have no idea what is on the internet. They're on a new temporal continent with no clue there's a parasite that can turn your daughter into a fujoshi. They do know that they have a worrying child. But! Her grades are really good, especially when she's testing in English. Good enough that although they originally intended not to send me to the US (my sister got depressed and burned out, and they attributed it to sending her to a different country for school), it made much more sense for me to go. I was on track to get a full ride at an Ivy, a carrot they were Not Immune to, and I obviously despised Korea and wanted to leave.
When I arrived in the States, I was terrified of speaking English to real native speakers. My language experience was "reading/writing: 95% English, speaking/listening: 90% Korean". I could perfectly pronounce any English sentence when I tried, but I'd occasionally and bizarrely mix up R and L, or the vowel sounds "ih" and "eeh" if I weren't paying attention. This went away after a year but I felt extra shy and didn't talk much. I'd guess 80% of my social cachet in freshman year came from writing funny Facebook posts.
I remember my time in Korea without feeling bothered by any single aspect, but overall I still have a big sense of "wow I didn't like that", have avoided non-Americanized Korean people since getting here (ten years ago), and now speak Korean haltingly. I'll try to teach it to my children so that they have the option of that cultural connection, but I don't think I can do a good job. It's feels 90% true thinking/speaking Korean is just a normal skill, a thing I do sometimes on the phone – and 10% true that the happier and more whole I become in the US, the more unsettling it feels to speak Korean at all.

This doesn't have anything to do with anything, but i had a talk with a friend a few days ago, about shonen biasis and the way this shapes our expectations, and mha came up so i remembered how so many people apply those biasis HEAVILY into the manga, to the point that they sound like they're looking for a different story.
And one of those things that it seemed to be MOST talked about is exactly bkdk's relationship.
I have seen many times people from the fandom (sometimes really angrily) point out how in most cases Katsuki seems to basically take up not one, but four roles in Izuku's life and this includes putting him in situations that people associate with the MC's love interest, and it is weird that, despite Izuku "having a girl" for people to make assumptions about, he seems to completely repulse any female character that could be the counter part to Izuku's.
And this made us wonder if Katsuki's placement in those roles and lack of interest was made specifically because the author precisely did not want the actions that both do for each other as romantic but a whole another thing entirely, as a subversion for the these classic tropes, as he did by making the conflict between Ochako and Himiko not a "rivals fighting for the affection of a boy" but something that is connected to the plot of these characters instead.
Oh you bet! I am always down to talk about this, because I think about it a lotttt.
This reminds me, recently I remembered a funny habit I used to have with books I read. Like, back in middle school. I used to start by flipping directly to the last page and reading the final sentence. Usually this did not spoil anything whatsoever, but sure enough, by the time I read through the whole book, that sentence would take on new meaning.
So I started musing about what it would be like if only I could do this with bnha, if everything was already out. It made me feel so nostalgic…
Will the last panel be something grand, or something small? Hopeful or sad? Distant? Intimate? A parting message to the reader? Will it look like almost nothing of consequence to the unknowing eye—yet burst with hard-hitting subtext?
Of course I wonder about all the twists and reveals that might be still ahead of us, but it’s kinda soothing to think about how the whole thing could be put to rest. Because then I realize I’m not worried.
For once, this is not because the story is following so many tropes so predictably that I know exactly, in so many words, how it will end. It’s more like the story is a close friend who I’ve gotten to know well enough that everything they do is so “them” it makes me smirk. I'm often marveling at how Horikoshi has managed to pull all this off. How is it that (at least here in the west) people who aren't really paying attention call it basic and cookie-cutter. Even a Japanese animator called it "classic," and this interview shows such obvious dissonance between Hori and the interviewer, just... wow. But it's so clear that bnha has broken just about every rule in the book at this point, so much so that I struggle to condense it into words. I'm like--*gestures broadly at everything*--why haven't more people picked up on it??
Yet we still get bombarded with people saying "it's a shonen, c'mon, we all know how this will end." Um. No you don't. I KNOW there has to be a bunch of people who are secretly frustrated by Kacchan taking up all the roles and getting all the moments. It's not even in a mysogynistic way, because Kacchan is the most anti-dudebro character imaginable. Bkdk's relationship isn't intended for them and they know it... and you know what, I'm starting to ramble. You've heard all this before. The thing I should really be focusing on in your ask is the part where you mentioned how you and your friend were speculating about bkdk ending up as "a whole other thing entirely" rather than simply romantic.
Well, fuck it, I've been biting my tongue, but now might as well be the time I talk about this. I got into a bit of a disagreement with someone over it once and then I shut up. Because it's very difficult to approach the subject without being lumped in with those people who see bkdk as "brotherly" (ew) or otherwise try to push some "crisis of male friendship" agenda, or at the very least without being accused of enabling people to make excuses against bkdk being canon ad infinitum. So let me be clear that I do NOT want bkdk to have an ambiguous or open ending. I want their complexity and importance to be acknowledged. I want them to use their words. I think we may have created a bit of a false dichotomy there.
I am aromantic, and to suggest romantic relationships are inherently the most important and intimate goes against every fiber of my being. I also reject the idea that cut-and-dry gay representation is more desirable just because it is more easily understood by the masses than aspec representation or representation of relationships "beyond" both romantic and platonic. We recognize how ridiculous it is for people to expect Izu*cha at this point, right? Well, the reason they're so confident anyway isn't just because of heteronormativity. It's also because of amatonormativity, the assumption that romantic attraction trumps all: no matter how much focus bkdk get, Izuku blushed at Ochako, so that automatically makes them more "important." THAT is the notion that I want to challenge most. More than anything, I want bkdk's relationship to be fully acknowledged because they have so much more going for them than just attraction.
You and your friend make an excellent point, that it would be very much in line with Horikoshi's taste and the patterns of his writing so far if he chose to subvert the shonen romance trope not just by giving it to two boys, but also by disregarding its premise entirely. It's unlikely he'd try to stuff them into such a copy-paste ending right at the end.
So maybe they won't get the blushy confession, the obligatory kiss, the wedding, the 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. That's fine, we shouldn't pretend those tired tropes are suddenly revolutionary just because they're gay. But don't be disappointed! Without them, we have more room for things that are actually personally meaningful to bkdk to stand out and receive the nuance they deserve: talking through their feelings openly, building each other up like no one else can, understanding each other like no one else can, smiling at each other, embracing, holding hands, rushing to the other in the hospital, being glued at the hip (or even closer), healing mutual trauma, putting each other first in all things. Maybe we'll also get confirmation on Ochako's side as she moves on from her crush on Izuku. You know what other shonen manga took this exact angle as a way of subverting tropes and presenting genuine complexity? Blue Flag! There are so many ways to do bkdk justice.
Even a kiss isn't out of the question, if the right opportunity comes along. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is Good Omens (major season 2 spoilers) because the kiss between Crowley and Aziraphale was not at all about canonizing them. It was an expression of pain and desperation that just made sense at that particular moment. Neil Gaiman was adamant that if it took that kiss to understand the context of their relationship, you really weren't paying attention. I respect the hell out of that.
Recently I was even daydreaming about bkdk getting something similar to the sort of uh, shall we say tasteful nudity, that togachako got, because of how Izuku appears in the vestige realm.

Ya know like not in an nsfw way but in like a "this is so deeply intimate and soft that I feel like I'm intruding" kind of way... yeah. Because it represents vulnerability and openness and acceptance of someone as they are. And I don't care if people call that bait. It's not. It's beautiful. It’s honest.

I will always be so mad that FMA:B gave Greed a different dialogue with Bradley after the Devil's Nest massacre than in the manga because it feels like it just changes his characterization to be so much plainer and more cartoonishly assholish. Like they really wanted to rope you into thinking he was a bad guy so that his twist of caring about people would feel stronger, but it just makes me sad. In the VIZ Media Fullmetal Edition translation, the exchange goes:
Greed: "Whoa there Bradley. How could you do this to them? They were my people."
Bradley: "Feeling pity for your pawns? How pathetic."
Greed: "Pity?! Do you forget who the hell you're dealing with?! I am greed incarnate!! Money, women, henchmen, everything-- they're my possessions! They're all mine! I won't let you take away what belongs to me!!"
...And the exchange in the English dub of FMA:B goes:
Greed: "Whoa, that was a little excessive. Killing me is one thing, but they're not coming back."
Bradley: "Pitying the lost lives of your pawns? Pathetic."
Greed: "Excuse me, are you senile? Did you forget who I am, old man? I'm the living incarnation of greed! Those weren't my friends, Bradley. They were my possessions! Money, women, henchmen-- They're all possessions!"
And that difference is absolutely insane! His manga version is in some ways more obvious and in some ways more ambiguous about his care for his friends. On the one hand, he staunchly refuses to pity them. (I would say that this is because he respects their right to self-determination and what they signed on for when they followed him, but that's almost pure speculation.) But on the other, he specifically refers to them as "[his] people." This really effectively toes the line between multiple meanings-- "[his] people" colloquially would refer to friends, but it also emphasizes ownership. It sets up his arc of acknowledging friendship while also not detracting from his care for the Devil's Nest gang.
The anime just makes him... indifferent and snarky? On a surface level, it makes his character arc far more clear as somebody learning to love and care about others, but it also really devalues his experiences with his gang. I guess I can almost understand why people just forget about them aside from the bit with Bido when they only watch FMA:B considering that it absolutely glosses over just about every part of the manga that makes you care about them. Why should people consider those random guys in the beginning when he makes it clear that he never cared about them? /s
And it's more than just the writing that I have a problem with. Even the animation is so distinctly different from what's shown in the manga that the tone ends up absolutely flipped on his head.
Tumblr media
(Note: this online scan doesn't use the official translation) Greed's expression here can best be described as one of pure rage. I think you could maybe loosely interpret the first panel as a grin, but the second panel clears up how he's feeling pretty well. It's especially poignant since the three panels preceding these two entirely obscure his expression. Any calm and collectedness has been shed in the face of his gang's massacre and his eyes are bulging and furious in a way that they haven't been drawn before. And how does the anime handle this absolute gut punch?
Tumblr media
Um. Not good, frankly. It's definitely got the wildness of his original expression, but it conveys none of the anger. It throws off what's essentially his greatest display of hypocrisy-- That he only gets angry when his gang is hurt, just like how Ed only gets angry when Al is hurt. Absolutely nothing about his reaction properly conveys rage or frustration, and that honestly just sucks. While episode 13 served as a pretty decent and streamlined recap of chapters 25-28, episode 14 really screwed with some of the moments that made Greed's arc feel so powerful and bittersweet.
Tl;dr Please oh please go read the manga version of og Greed's arc <3

part one part two part three part ???
leave me love?
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT!
Looking back to it, everything happened so fast. As soon as your friends forced Suna’s name out of your mouth after they found out you’re pregnant, they pulled all their connections to get the two of you to meet... Only for him to question the fatherhood of your child. That’s when you first met Osamu Miya. You did not know back then that he was Rintarou’s best friend and as devastated as you were, you spilled your problems to him.
That’s how you found yourself next in the most stressful weeks of your life. Mr. and Mrs. Suna telling you that you are to wed their son. Rintarou telling you that you should get an abortion. And several nosy people telling you that you are a whore who got herself pregnant to get into the rich Suna family.
You tried to refuse the marriage, telling the couple (who, unlike their son, were the sweetest people you’ve met) that there’s no need for a marriage, you just need support to raise your child. They of course wouldn’t have it, and you knew it’s partly because they wanted to punish their son. You admittedly entertained the thoughts of getting an abortion but you just couldn’t do it... not after watching your sister struggle with multiple miscarriages in the past. And with the people spreading malicious things about you... you tried to ignore them, until a few days before the marriage where the gossips suddenly stopped.
Marrying Suna Rintarou brought a lot of changes in your life. First of all, you had to forego the post-graduate internship that was offered to you at the end of your senior year. Second, you had to move to a house gifted by his parents, which caused a rift between you and your sisters since you initially promised them that you’d be living with and helping them. And lastly, you had to live with Rintarou, who explicitly lets you know that he blames you for the forced marriage.
Another surge of headache breaks you out of your reverie. You straighten on your seat in the hospital lobby, waiting for the doctor’s secretary to call you. You had dropped off the kids at Sacha’s place right after confirming with the receptionist that there’s an available slot for a check-up. Last night, right after Rin left, you had a terrible headache, much the same as the ones you’ve been having for the past few weeks.
You look at the queuing monitor and notice that there are still a handful of people before your turn. You open your bag to get your Kindle but it grazes the leather bind of your journal. You must have taken it with you when you took your reading device from the bedside drawer. And just as you’re always inclined to do, you flip to the already dog-eared pages and read through your journal entries from years ago. It’s time to relive the memories.
You were in your fourteenth week of pregnancy. The new house’s backyard was as empty as you felt for the last two months of living with your new husband. He would wake up early and arrive home late. Thankfully, you have managed to befriend the housekeepers, Yuto and Jiri. It was one evening, though, that neither of them was home since the former was on leave while the latter was sick.
The clock struck ten and the main door opened, revealing Rintarou who looked visibly unwell. You rushed to him and he tried to swat you away, only for you to feel how his skin was burning. He must have been feeling too sick because after two more attempts, he finally let you help him into his bed.
That night, you nursed him to the best of your abilities, from changing his clothes to wiping his face with cold cloth. You even cooked soup for him, feeding him as his hands were shaking too much. As you were about to leave his room so you could go back to the spare one where you have been staying since you two moved in, his rough voice stopped you. “Stay.”
Your eyes widened, unsure if you heard him right. “Are you...?”
He groaned. “Or call Jiri. I need her.”
“She’s sick,” you replied. “I’ll just stay... if that’s okay with you?”
He was quiet for a while. “Okay.”
That night, you ended up staying with Rintarou, sitting beside his bed and barely getting any sleep. It went on for two more days. When you woke up on the fourth morning, you were surprised to find a blanket on top of you, much less feel the softness of a mattress below you.
You jolted awake and was surprised to see Rintarou sitting up with his back leaning against the bedframe and talking to someone on the phone. “Thanks, Kita. Yes, I’m feeling better. I’ll be back in the office tomorrow.” He must have noticed you staring at him for he turned his head towards you, the look on his face unreadable. “Call me when something urgent comes up. I have to go.” After dropping the call, he moved to stand up.
“Are you okay?” You asked before you could stop yourself.
“Weren’t you eavesdropping?” He shot back. “I’m feeling better. Jiri’s coming in today by the way, no need to make your pathetic attempts of forcing yourself into my business.” Suna didn’t even spare you a glance before he marched off to his bathroom.
Despite the two months of living with him, his actions towards you still managed to hurt. You gulped and moved to stand up from the bed, knowing too well that Suna would want nothing but to see his room void of you once he comes back.
Two days later, you found yourself with a flu. You begged Jiri not to tell Suna or his parents. But alas, you should have known better that while she had become your friend, her loyalty was still with the Suna family.
On the third night of your flu, you heard a knock on your door. It was odd since it was way past Jiri’s and Yuto’s hours of duty. Sighing, you forced yourself from your bed, wrapping the fluffy blanket around your body.
I must be delirious, was your first thought as you saw Suna at the other side of the door.
“Did something happen?” You asked, trying to hold back a cough, hoping he wouldn’t notice.
He looked every bit uncomfortable as he handed you a paper bag. “Here.”
You reluctantly received it and peeked inside. Care package. You looked up at him questioningly. “What’s this for?”
He broke the eye contact and mumbled something.
“Sorry? What did you say?”
He let out an annoyed sigh and forced himself to look at you eye to eye. “Jiri told me you were sick and that you probably got it from me. She scolded me that I shouldn’t have asked you to stay in the same room because it’s risky for pregnant people.” His eyebrows furrowed. “What are you smiling about?”
“Nothing,” you replied but you knew your smile was still on your face. “You didn’t have to go out of the way to give me this, you know.”
“Then what the fuck was I supposed to do? Jiri would have never let me hear the end of it.”
“Hmm... could have just said ‘sorry’, maybe?”
Suna rolled his eyes and opened his hand, palm up. “Forget it, then. Give that back.”
You clutched the care package against your chest. “No way! No taking back, this is mine already!” Before you knew it, a giggle escaped your lips. You immediately froze, realizing it was Suna you were talking to. However, when you dared to look at him, there’s a barely noticeable hint of a smile on his lips, the atmosphere between the two of you warm. “Good night, Y/N.”
It’s only when the sound of his footsteps have receded that you realized what happened: he just called you by your first name.
“Mrs. Y/N Suna?” The secretary’s voice brings you back to the present. “Please enter room 125.”
You gather your things and make your way into your doctor’s office. She greets you with a warm smile. “How are you doing, Y/N?” The doctor asks as soon as you’ve settled down on your seat. “You haven’t visited in a while.” Megumi Hirai is a nice lady who’s in her early forties and you’ve taken a liking to her in the past few years. “I take it you’ve been busy?”
You nod. “It was the kids’ birthday party yesterday. There was a lot of preparation that needed to be done.”
“Oh, that’s nice. How old are they now?”
“Five,” you smile proudly. “I feel like they’re growing up too fast. I want them to stay little for just a little bit longer.”
At that, Dr. Hirai laughs. “Every parent experience that. I see no reason for you to worry though, you’re still young. Isn’t it about time that you and Rintarou try for another child?”
The smile on your lips drops a little. “We’re too busy for that this time, I think.”
Sensing that you want to change the subject, Dr. Hirai moves on to another topic. “How’s work going?”
“Great,” you reply. “A bit stressful, but it’s all good.” Despite the Suna family saying there’s no need for you to work, you still got yourself a job at a local publishing company. You’ve been loyal to it, and now you’re one of the head editors.
You’ve always been passionate about writing and editing; you could say you were depressed when you had to let go of the internship at the global publishing company because of the sudden pregnancy. The memories of you sharing that to Rin and him reluctantly helping you find a job poke at your head.
You will yourself to stay at the present. “I’m still happy with my job.”
“That’s nice to hear.” Dr. Hirai smiles. “What’s your concern, then?”
“I’ve been having these extreme headaches for the past few weeks. Sometimes they last long, sometimes they pass quickly. The other night, I think I passed out.”
The doctor hums. “Any other symptoms?”
“Um, I can’t think of any…”
“Have you noticed any trend on the times when they surge?”
You shake your head no. “Not really. I honestly don’t think it’s serious but they’ve been becoming more frequent lately.”
“Okay.” Dr. Hirai says, pulling out some papers. “I’ll be requesting for you to undergo some tests. Have them done as soon as possible so you can schedule another checkup with me.”
“Thank you, doctor.” You take the request forms.
“You’re welcome,” Dr. Hirai smiles kindly. “And Mrs. Suna?”
“Yes?“
“Don’t downplay the headaches you’re experiencing. You never know if they’re actually underlying symptoms of something serious. Have a nice day.”
 --------
“I’m sorry to be saying this, but you don’t look too well.” Osamu Miya is placing the take-out rice balls you had just bought in the paper bags as he alternately looks between his task at hand and you, who’s sitting at the counter.
You had decided to drop by his restaurant before picking up the kids from Sacha. His statement makes you bite your lip. “Is it that obvious?”
“That you look like you had no sleep and cried your eyes out for hours?” Osamu asks in reply, then takes a deep breath. “Yes.” The gray-haired man shakes his head. “Rin is so fucking stupid. I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize on behalf of him, Osamu,” you say. “He’s your best friend but his actions are all his own choices.”
The twin keeps quiet for a while as he finishes packing your order. In the meantime, you rub your fingers against your temple, symptoms of a headache beginning to manifest again. You close your eyes, hoping it goes away. Once you open them, you see Osamu staring intently at you. “I have a confession to make,” he says.
This piques your interest and you lean a little bit forward. “What is it?”
“It’s all my fault,” Osamu says, gulping. “After that first night we met, I went to Rin’s parents and told them what happened. He initially confided in me that he got someone pregnant and I wasn’t planning on getting involved until I met you. You were nice and kind, I couldn’t let Rintarou to just fuck up your life.
“I thought once he gets married, once he gets to know you... he’d grow and change. But I was wrong.” His eyes are now filled with guilt and apology. “I’m sorry, Y/N. If I had known that Rin wouldn’t change one bit during the past five years – ”
“Stop,” you cut him off, no longer wanting to hear more. “That’s all in the past now.” You contemplate your next words carefully. “Besides, it’s not like Rin was completely horrible to me during the time we’ve been together.”
Osamu’s voice is filled with curiosity. “What do you mean?”
It’s at that exact moment that the door of the restaurant swings opens and someone enters, your heart dropping once you see who it is.
Suna Rintarou. Your husband.
 -------
Suna hasn’t seen you since the night before and he definitely wasn’t expecting to see you here at Osamu’s restaurant. Once you face him, he immediately notices the redness of your eyes that your makeup wasn’t able to cover. He chooses not to think about the reason behind them.
“Hey, Rin,” his friend waves at him from behind the counter. “Y/N is here.”
He rolls his eyes as he stalks toward the counter. “I’m not blind, ‘Samu.” He takes the stool next to yours and immediately notices you tense. He inwardly sighs, remembering what happened last night. He turns to face you and gets a little surprised when he sees you gathering your purse and the paper bag from the counter.
“I have to go. Bye, Osamu! Thank you for these!” And in a moment, you’re out the door.
As soon as you’re gone, he feels his best friend’s curious eyes on him. “What? Gonna ask me to go run after her?”
Osamu rolls his eyes. “As if you would.”
While his friend is right, the statement still annoys Suna. “Why was she here, anyway?”
“As if you care.”
He tries to mask his annoyance as he clenches his jaw. “You’re, right. I don’t.”
There’s a beat of silence before Osamu speaks again. “Why are you here, Rin?”
Truth be told, Suna’s agenda was to force Osamu to join him on a night of drinking where he may or may not tell him about what happened last night. But seeing you here... and then Osamu’s rather irritating replies... “Forget it, I’m leaving.”
“Did you and Y/N fight?” His friend’s question makes him stiffen.
Suna rolls his eyes. “We often argue. You know that.”
“Yeah,” Osamu replies rather curtly. “But this time, it seems as if you’ve crossed the line.”
To his own surprise, Suna replies with, “Yeah, I think so.”
He doesn’t need to look at his friend’s face to see the surprise on it. “Wow, that’s a lot... coming from you. What happened? Please don’t tell me you hit her.”
He glares at the man. “I’m an asshole but I would never lay a hand on a woman, even if I hate her.”
“Why do you hate her, Rin?” Osamu asks. “What has she ever done to you? You still have your job and inheritance; you can still fuck around... I know she doesn’t demand much from you about the kids. In fact, she got the short end of the stick. Why do you hate Y/N?”
Instead of answering his friend’s questions, Rin adjusts his position on the stool and makes a fist against the counter. “She confessed to me last night.”
“And what did you say?” Osamu’s voice begins to become unreadable.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
Suna shrugs. “We were having an argument so I figured she was just trying to fuck with my head.”
There’s a short silence that follows but it’s long enough to make him feel uncomfortable.
“Are you really that blind?” Suna prefers it if his best friend is shouting at him at the moment. But alas, Osamu sounds so calm and everyone knows that Osamu Miya is ten times scarier when he’s acting calm during moments that would call for him to be mad.
“What do you want to hear as my answer?” Does Osamu want him to admit that all these years, he thought your hurt towards his treatment was solely because you wanted to have a happy little family? That he didn’t think you actually fell for him in those few months that you were in good terms? But, admitting those would mean he needs to tell Osamu about that time, those five months where he opened his heart to you. Those five months that he never dared tell anyone.
“Jesus Fucking Christ, Suna!” Osamu slams a hand against the counter, anger and frustration evident in his voice. “Anyone with an eye can see that Y/N is in love with you! Though it remains a mystery to me how she managed to fall for a dickhead like you, it’s clear that she loves you!”
Other explicit things leave Osamu’s mouth and Suna just stays there and takes them all. Once his friend is only heaving deep breaths, he begins to talk. His turn. “You asked why I hate her. Well, my answer is short.” He mentally sighs and, finally deciding it’s due time for Osamu to know, says the name that haunts him to this day.
Osamu’s eyes widen. “You mean...?”
“Yeah.”
He watches as a conflicted look dawns on his friend’s face. “Do you understand me now?”
“Kind of.” His friend’s gaze hardens a bit. “But you do know you’re being unfair to Y/N, right?”
Suna stands from the seat, retrieving the cigarette box from his pocket. “I know.” As he walks the short distance from Osamu’s restaurant to his car, all Suna can think about is, And I think maybe it’s about time I should apologize to her.
  ------
You’re inside the bedroom, just finishing up changing the sheets. Ever since Jiri left three years ago and you and Rintarou never hired someone new, you’ve been in charge of keeping the house tidy. In reality, you just had changed the sheets a week prior but what happened four nights ago just makes you want to change them, hoping that as they come clean, so does your relationship with Rintarou.
It’s been three days since the fight and oddly enough, Rintarou comes home on time and even doesn’t complain about sharing the bed. He barely acts as if you exist, cementing your belief that confessing to him was a totally wrong move. However, there are times when you feel him staring at you, as if he wants to tell you something...
You shake your head, reminding yourself that there are lots of things to do. First of all, the test results that you got yesterday after having the necessary check-ups from the day before. Second, the papers you have requested after a long call that you had last night.
You’re too engrossed in your thoughts that you fail to notice that Rin has entered your room. He’s wearing his work clothes which always make him look ten times more attractive. You straighten on the bed and try to look at his eyes. To your surprise, he meets your gaze. “We need to talk.” You both say at the same time.
You bite your lower lip, and seeing as he’s not saying anything, you take it as a cue that he’s allowing you to speak first. So, with a deep breath, you say the words you’ve been practicing in the shower this morning. “I want to file for divorce.”
TO BE CONTINUED.

Like Nakamura-kun uses a similar bubbly font, the くん is stylized similar by being smaller and vertical between the name and the punctuation, and instead of being “Interjection!! Name-kun!” it’s “Interjection! Name-kun!!” with the number of exclamation marks flipped.
It’s just something I never saw anyone mention for some reason, but I thought it was interesting because the manga clearly tries to pay homage to 80’s romcom manga. The rest of the cover itself is very late-70’s early-80’s feeling and almost looks like something you’d see from Urusei Yatsura.
It actually annoys me that the official English title is “Go for it, Nakamura!” because it completely gets rid of the Hibari-kun format. It’d be like renaming Hibari-kun to “Stop, Hibari!” and if Stop!! Hibari-kun! ever did get translated with its original title, you wouldn’t be able to tell it was Nakamura-kun’s inspiration.

On the tddkbb server we were discussing what the foods were at this dinner and I might have gone and gotten invested in figuring them all out.
Lots of images, with more below, to flip back and forth between as needed. Clean image, followed by numbered images. Numbers are per dish, which sometimes there are multiple of the same one.
Shumai - I would guess the pork variety since that is the kind that I always see with the pea on top. I wasn’t actually sure about this one until I looked at the manga panel and saw that the little cylinders are more wrinkly than in the anime, like they should be.
Mapo Tofu - Bakugo yells about this dish.
Hambagu or hamburger steak - This one I’m about 95% sure about. It’s got the salad and tomatoes there and I really can’t think of anything else it would be but I might be wrong.
Leeks - This is a best guess. It could also be a cucumber dish or something else. But the way it is alone and the pieces are long makes me think leeks are most likely. Other ideas welcome.
Cabbage Rolls
Gyoza - This one I wasn’t sure about until the anime gave up the close up of Midoriya eating one, see below.
Tamagoyaki - I wasn’t sure about this one from the table spread shots but the fourth image and the manga panel shows the spirals very clearly giving it away. There does appear to be a minor animation error on the fourth image where the plate changes to white from black but mistakes happen.
Tatsutaage - I would have guessed karaage from the images alone since they are very similar dishes but Midoriya actually states the name of this dish when he is praising it.
Negiyaki or Okonomiyaki or other Okonomiya-related dish - This one I’m just guessing. In the first and second image it is shown cut up, in the close up shot it looks too flat and thin to be any of these but I can’t think of anything else it might be. As can be seen in the 9?s on the manga panels could be the same dish but neither really looks like anything specific. I think 9? blue is the same dish but they did change things between the manga and the anime so it’s really just a best guess. If anyone has any other ideas what this dish might be please tell me.
Salad - Nothing exciting here just a simple salad with some cherry tomatoes
Soup, probably Miso - Miso soup would be the standard and it’s the right color for it but there are other options it could be since it is never said to be any specific type.
Rice - These are also their serving bowls, the take food from the spread and add it to their rice bowl.
Dipping Sauce - I haven’t been able to divine what kind of sauce. I’m leaning towards tartar sauce since that would go with the tatsutaage and the color sorta matches. It might also be shabu shabu but that wouldn't be chunky looking like this is. I would have assumed green onion sauce but it’s the wrong color for that and much too chunky looking. These could also be dishes for eating things without rice and they have some mapo tofu in them. If anyone has any other ideas of what it might be please let me know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's very clearly gyoza from this image.
Tumblr media
And lastly, I give you my final point of this post.
Tumblr media
Dabi hates fish. Fuyumi made this huge spread of dishes and didn't make one fish dish. Not a single one.
I'm gonna forever headcanon that Fuyumi doesn't cook fish because Touya hated it.

Shadow's Embrace Ch.19
Sukuna x Reader
Disclaimer:
This is a work of fanfiction based on the universe of "Jujutsu Kaisen," created by Gege Akutami. The original manga, anime, and characters belong to their respective owners and creators.
Notes:
This story unfolds in the Jujutsu Kaisen world, set in a slightly altered universe where Sukuna inhabits his own vessel distinct from Itadori Yuji's body, making him a separate entity.
Summary:
Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, becomes fascinated with a female sorcerer rich in potential but lacking control. Initially seizing her for his destructive plans, Sukuna aims to bind her abilities through a contract. Yet, as he tries to dominate her, he finds himself intrigued by her strength and determination. Over time, his interest evolves from strategic advantage to a deeper, personal connection.
---------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER 19 - In the Lion's Den
“What the hell—”
The moment the words tumbled from your lips, you realized your blunder. Instantly, three pairs of eyes zeroed in on you.
Mahito's face contorted into a wide smirk, lighting up with childlike mischief as he propped himself up to get a better look at you. "Oh, look who's home!" he sang out, clearly delighted by your visible shock.
Jogo merely grunted, sparing you only a brief glance before returning his focus to the cards in his hands. The faint glow emanating from his volcanic head betrayed his annoyance at being disturbed though.
Geto, the most composed of the trio, offered you a smile that was far too warm to be genuine, his eyes narrowing to slits below the stitches on his forehead. "You seem surprised," he remarked, with an disarmingly calm voice. "Did Sukuna not mention we were gathering here today?"
No, Sukuna did not.
Your eyes scanned the room, searching for any trace of the King of Curses, but Sukuna was conspicuously absent. A twinge of unease settled in your stomach—without Sukuna around, you felt vulnerable among this dangerous group.
The memory of your last encounter with Mahito resurfaced, a harsh reminder of the malice and power that came with a special-grade cursed spirit. Despite your progress, you were painfully aware of the difference in strength between you and him, not to mention the combined threat of all three.
Geto’s keen sense of awareness caught notice of your anxious search. His voice, smooth and almost gentle, broke the silence. “Ah, yes, Sukuna stepped out for a bit. It seems he needed to... blow off some steam.”
Mahito leaned back, casually fiddling with the poker chips in his hand, "Would you believe it? The mighty Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses himself, threw a tantrum, haha!" he chuckled.
"Lost one game, flipped the table, and stormed off." The cursed spirit paused, his head tilting playfully as he added, "But don't worry, he said he'll be back."
For some reason you couldn't help yourself from getting chills whenever Mahito spoke. You didn’t want to feel fear toward him, didn’t want to give him that satisfaction, but the memories were too vivid to ignore. The sensation of your flesh being torn open, your bones being ground into the floor, still haunted you.
Jogo's head turned slightly at the small tremble of your hands, and his voice, though gruff, carried an unexpected note of reassurance. “Don’t let that fool Mahito bother you,” he said. “Sukuna made it clear that any harm to you would mean our immediate destruction. Without exceptions.”
Jogo’s eyes flicked toward Mahito, emphasizing that the last part was a direct warning to him.
Mahito caught the drift and feigned a look of innocence. “Oh, did I forget to apologize?” he drawled, his smirk widening as he looked your way. “Sorry about last time. Guess I got a bit carried away, didn’t I?”
It was as if the devastating encounter that had altered the course of your entire life, that had forced you into this twisted arrangement with Sukuna, had been nothing more than an amusing slip-up to him.
Yet despite the surge of anger that flared within you, you forced yourself to remain composed, clenching your jaw and refusing to let them see any further weakness.
Oddly enough, in this moment, every fiber of your being wanted Sukuna to return—something you never imagined you'd wish for. But if you had to choose between these monsters, the King of Curses felt like the lesser evil, or at least—the devil you knew best.
As you slowly made your way into the apartment, you were acutely aware of the dagger strapped to the side of your ankle—the one Gojo had given you for self-defense. If one of them made a move, that would be your only chance.
To your surprise, however, none of the men seemed particularly interested in you anymore. They simply returned to their game.
You set your bag down on the kitchen counter, keeping a weary eye on the trio. Your legs throbbed with fatigue, and all you wanted was to sit down, but you couldn't—the couch was occupied, Sukuna’s room was off-limits, and the basement wasn’t even a consideration.
With no other option available, you resigned yourself to silently observing the group from the relative safety of the kitchen, careful not to draw any unwanted attention.
"Yay, I win!" Mahito shouted out in glee, declaring his victory, before exaggeratedly shoving all the poker chips in the pot towards him.
Meanwhile Jogo's head began to steam as he glared at his own cards, his frustration hard to miss.
Geto, on the other hand, remained the picture of calm, his face a perfect mask of serenity, even though it was clear he had lost a fair amount. His eyes flicked up to meet yours for the briefest of moments, before he returned his focus to the game.
They continued a few more rounds, with alternating wins and losses, and your strategy to avoid drawing attention seemed to work. That was until Mahito abruptly stood up and stretched out, announcing that he wanted a break.
With a swiftness that caught you off guard, Mahito darted toward the kitchen. His sudden proximity as he casually reached into a cupboard for a glass sent a jolt through you.
"Whoopsie, did I scare you?" he taunted with a playful grin.
He then moved in close behind you, reaching for the sink. His arm stretched out, nearly grazing your side, as he let the water flow in a slow, deliberate stream. It was obvious that he was trying to drag out the moment to unsettle you further.
And to your frustration, it was working. You stood there, frozen in place, unable to move away.
Geto observed with a smile barely hidden beneath his calm exterior, while Jogo remained absorbed in his cards, indifferent to the tension.
That was until the door was violently thrust open.
Sukuna stormed in, his presence instantly dominating the room. His eyes quickly assessed the scene. And in a swift, fluid motion he seized Mahito by the collar and flung him against the wall with unrestrained force.
The impact shook the apartment.
It was a clear and unmistakable display of his authority. Even Geto, seemed to briefly lose his typical composure by the violent outburst.
Mahito, rubbed at his neck, nursing his bruised ego more than any real injury.
“Ouch. I was just getting a drink. Didn’t even touch her,” he muttered, as he slumped against the wall.
With a rough grip, Sukuna yanked him up by the hair, his voice a low growl. "Is that so?" he asked, his deadly glare snapping to you, silently demanding the truth.
He seemed genuinely pissed, and for a brief moment, you wondered if there was something more behind that venomous gaze—was it possible Sukuna was actually concerned for you? Or was he just infuriated by the possibility that his orders had been disregarded?
Either way, you were exhausted, and the last thing you needed was a full-blown conflict erupting in the middle of the apartment. So, with a sigh, you nodded, confirming Mahito's words. "He didn’t touch me," you said, hoping to defuse the situation before it escalated further.
Fortunately, Sukuna seemed to let the matter drop. With a final, dismissive glance, he released his grip on Mahito, allowing the cursed spirit to crumple to the floor.
As Mahito straightened his clothes and got back on his feet, he muttered a quiet “Told you so”, under his breath.
A daring move—and the King of Curses was not amused. “Don’t get cocky, you pathetic worm,” he spat. “I don’t need a reason to end your miserable existence. Cross me again, and I’ll slice you up without a second thought.”
They exchanged a final glare, and though it ended there, the tension in the room remained thick—the poker game was clearly over.
Mahito returned to the couch, and at that point, Sukuna turned his gaze to you. "Out. We have plans to discuss, and you're not part of them."
Of course—precisely on this day, when you were so utterly exhausted, craving nothing more than the sweet respite of rest, you were being chased away from the only place of refuge you had.
With a weary sigh, you relented, though not without muttering quietly under your breath, "I just really wanted a nap."
Sukuna's sharp ears didn't miss a single word of your complaint, and he seized the opportunity to taunt you. "Can't handle a bit of training, little sorcerer?" he sneered, with a voice laced in mockery. "Humans are so frail, it's laughable."
Yet, despite his mocking, he seemed to throw you an unexpected bone.
"Fine," he conceded, "if you really need your pathetic sleep that badly, you can rest in my room." His crimson eyes narrowed, a silent warning. "But if you touch anything other than the bed, I'll kill you."
What?—The offer to use his room, his bed no less, caught you completely off guard. The idea was mortifying, far too intimate and embarrassing to even consider. But before you could fully process the situation, Sukuna's patience wore thin.
"Enough dawdling," he barked, in obvious irritation. "Get out, now!"
Without waiting for your response, he shoved you roughly into the room, his room. The door slammed shut behind you with a resounding thud, sealing you inside his personal space.
Somehow hesitant at what you might find, you cautiously lifted your gaze, bracing yourself. And the sight that greeted you  was astonishing, to say the least.
The contrast between this room and the rest of the apartment was striking. While the living area was bland and sparsely decorated, his room was a grand display of dark opulence.
Deep shades of crimson and black dominated the space, with traditional Japanese design elements seamlessly integrated into every corner. Priceless artifacts and weapons lined the walls, each one a testament to his past life in the Heian era. The bed, large and imposing, was carved with intricate detail, and the dim, moody lighting cast an eerie yet oddly captivating glow over the room.
Despite the initial awe, a chuckle escaped you, at the fact that Sukuna took the time to meticulously decorate his room with such care and attention to detail. It was a side of him that seemed almost... human.
Heeding Sukuna's warning not to touch anything, you resisted the urge to explore the fascinating array of artifacts and decorations. Instead, you cautiously approached the bed, the one piece of furniture you were allowed to touch.
You sat yourself down on the edge, finally giving your weary legs some much-needed relief. The unexpectedly soft and silky sheets slid against your palms, and it felt profoundly wrong to touch something so personally his.
Despite the discomfort you felt, the fatigue won over and you reclined onto the bed, allowing yourself to sink into the plush comfort. The scent that lingered on the sheets was overwhelming and commanding, much like Sukuna himself— a dark blend of sandalwood, spices and smoldering ember.
And perhaps it was that rich, grounding scent or the silken embrace of the sheets that felt like a forbidden luxury against your skin. Maybe it was the dim, yellow lighting that cast the room in a tranquil hue. Whatever the reason, you felt cradled into a sense of security you hadn't felt in a long time.
Your eyelids grew heavy, the weight of exhaustion pulling them close, and before long, you found yourself slipping into the most deep, restorative sleep you'd had in weeks.
---------------------------------------------------------
Your dreams were filled with vivid memories of Ayumi—the good ones you cherished from your high school days.
Ayumi had been your rock, your anchor during those years. She taught you bravery, how to bite back, and most importantly, how to find joy in not taking life too seriously.
You savored every moment spent with her in those dreams, the warmth of her presence and the infectious laughter that had once filled your days. It was as if she was still here alive, beside you.
The recollections played out like a film reel, transporting you back in time. Particularly to one day, during the last week of school before summer break in your third year.
Ayumi had convinced you to skip classes, though that went against everything your parents had taught you about diligence and hard work.
"C'mon' it'll be fun!", she chanted as she nearly dragged you along with her to the river just outside of town, a place you both loved but rarely had time to visit.
The day was sunny, the water clear and inviting. Ayumi, fearless and unbothered, stripped down in record time and dove into the water with a wild laugh. You hesitated, feeling self-conscious about getting naked in such a place, and dreading the shock of the cold water.
But Ayumi would have none of it. She splashed you mercilessly until you were soaked, forcing you to give in to the exhilaration. And finally, with a mix of reluctance and excitement, you jumped in.
The hours that followed were a blur of carefree bliss. You swam, floated on your backs, and talked about everything from the future to the most trivial of topics. At one point, Ayumi had even climbed onto a large rock, declaring herself the "Queen of the River,' her laughter nearly causing her to tumble back and bump her head against the stone.
When the day ended, you returned home exhausted, with a painful sunburn. A stern lecture from your parents followed.
But it didn’t matter at all.
At that point, the peaceful reverie of your dreams got shattered by a harsh, grating voice that tore through the tranquil silence. "Oi, brat. Brat!"
It yanked you from the depths of your sleep, and you groggily rubbed your eyes.
As the fog lifted and your surroundings came into focus, the crushing realization of where you found yourself made your cheeks flush with heat. You had actually fallen asleep in his bed, right in the heart of the King of Curses' personal 'quarters'.
Sukuna towered over you, observing your disheveled state, as his lips twisted into a smirk. "What's with the red face, little sorcerer? Having indecent dreams in my bed?" He taunted, following up with an even cruder remark, and an expression that spelled out the amusement at his own words.
"You'd better not have left a stain between those legs," he continued, leaning in as he tugged at the sheet beneath you. "Or you'll be scrubbing it out yourself."
Gross.
You knew his game well by now—he'd say anything to make you uncomfortable, to provoke you. It was best not to let it get to you.
"It's nothing like that," you retorted, sitting up and hastily smoothing out the wrinkles in the sheets—a futile attempt to erase the evidence of your blunder, of falling asleep on his bed.
Sukuna found your attempts at maintaining composure thoroughly amusing, judging by the smirk on his face. But it seemed he'd grown bored of toying with you any further.
"Oh, really?" he growled, the playful tone giving way to something far more commanding. "Well, regardless, I want you out of here, now."
And you wanted out of there too. Still hazy and disoriented, you hoped that if you could avoid fully waking up, you might be able to slip back into those peaceful dreams by curling up on the couch.
With a loud creak of the bedframe, you got up to leave. But before you made your exit, Sukuna couldn’t resist emphasizing his supposed generosity. “Consider yourself lucky I even let you set foot in this room, woman,” he spat out.
Your lips curled into a wry smile as you muttered, “Yes, yes, I’m the luckiest,” heavy on the sarcasm.
Sukuna’s response was a threathening “Hm?”—a subtle challenge that made you quicken your pace to escape, fast. Yet, as you rushed to the door, your gaze couldn't help but be drawn to the gleaming steel of an imposing weapon mounted on the wall.
Sukuna noticed your interest, and his scowl swiftly transformed into a suprising grin, one filled with enthusiasm rather than his usual taunts.
“Oh, that?” he said, as he smoothly unhooked the weapon from its display. He held it out for you to see, its craftsmanship and the cursed energy it emanated were unmistakable.
“It’s my trident, Hiten,” he explained, his fingers tracing the intricate design with a reverence that made it clear he held this piece of his past in high regard.
Suddenly, he used his free hand to forcefully tug on your arm, and before you knew it, you were kneeling beside the bed, the swiftness of the movement nearly making you tumble.
To your surprise, Sukuna knelt beside you, his presence still imposing even in this lowered position. Holding Hiten, he gestured toward the intricate carvings etched into the wooden bed.
"These," he began, tracing the lines of the carved battle scene that depicted the weapon he held in his hands, "show my annihilation of the Northern Fujiwara Clan’s Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad."
His grip on Hiten tightened, and an excited glint flickered in his eyes. “It was glorious. The chaos, the carnage—an unparalleled thrill. I savored every second of wiping them out.”
The images were explicit, a testament to the bloodshed he had caused. Yet, the smile stretching across his face was one of the most genuine expressions you had ever seen from him.
The quickening of your heartbeat was unexpected. Your eyes, drawn irresistibly to the sincerity of that smile.
He met your gaze, and in that moment, something within you stirred—something raw and undeniably dangerous...

Saw ur also a ???% fan… 👀
Care to share your thoughts around him? Or headcanons if you have them? :D
1. You just noticed? I have NOT been talking enough about him then. I will rectify this immediately. (This is a joke you're good)
2. SO.
These will be scattered. Because I am a very scattered person.
I will flip flop between if I like the disconnect between ???% and Mob better as a plural thing or an allegory .I like both! Both is good! He's so fascinating as an allegory but also he's the most accurate representation of being plural I've ever seen and it's not even canon. So like. Two cakes!
I will always be insane about the manga version of confession arc. Hold on I need to talk about this in detail or I'll actually die.
His fucking. His fucking talk with Mob. "And you were never...never...looking at me." WHAT IF I SCREAM. Literally everything he says to Mob is so interesting and also relatable as shit whether you view it as plural or as an allegory. Both is good. Like you can view him telling Mob he forgot to protect himself and all that shit as like "You only do these good things to ease your own guilt. You don't actually want to be around people. You're selfish. This is who I am. I want to be able to exist without trying to be normal. I want to be able to be seen and not be harmed for it. I am tired of everyone ignoring this part of me because they prefer you. Would they actually do what I've done for them, or are they using me?" Like. Holy shit. It's so so fucking OW especially as an autistic person. But also as a system it's so easy to read him going "You pushed all the memories you didn't want onto me. You let me handle the things you didn't want. You shoved everything onto me, and I took it with stride because I loved you. You let me take all the hard things so you didn't have to face them, because you're a coward. This is my body too. This is my life too. Why don't I get to have that? Why do I have to give it up because you don't want me? They're my family too. You don't get to decide I don't deserve to exist because you hate yourself too much to admit I'm here." Like. Its so easy to read it as him being a protector who is SO fucking resentful of all the shit he's had to deal with, all the memories he has to hold alone, all of the shit he's experienced, and not a sliver of gratitude. Like goddamn does it remind me of my experience being a system. Either way the distance from him and the relationship between him and Mob has been my favorite part of the show since I started watching. And the manga is even more interesting and it's so!!!!!!!!!!!
More confession manga thoughts!! Him saying "Ritsu is my little brother. He was calling me Nii-san." Is so. He said that when Mob asked who he was. He viewed that as a solid part of his identity. RITSU is a massive part of his identity. Does he view Mob as not Ritsu's brother then? Does he feel like he was cheated out of his own family? I wouldn't be surprised nor would I blame him for feeling like that.
And even more confession arc shit. Hi. Thinks about how ???% in the anime at least had to steel himself before raising his hand at Reigen. He hates him but he still cares about him. He hates him but that guy raised him as much as his parents did. Clawing at the walls.
Actually y'know what I haven't talked about my thoughts on Reigen and ???% with anyone but the friend that I watched the show with and that is a tragedy that will not stand. ???% hates Reigen so so much but also cares SO much about him. Thinks about he passed out the second Reigen told him his parents were fine, and contrast that to him saying that he can't listen to Reigen in confession. He knows that if he listens to Reigen he'll believe him and that fucking terrifies him. He'll follow after Reigen because he means the world to him, because that man raised him, because he just wants him to be proud of him so fucking badly. He'll go back to being miserable and trapped, and everyone will go back to pretending he doesn't exist. He's terrified of Reigen, I think, because he knows Reigen is a good liar. Reigen can make him believe things. And he doesn't like that. He doesn't like how gullible he actually is. That's why he doesn't trust anyone- he's gullible enough to believe anything, so he has to distrust ANYTHING, no matter how much sense it makes, because he knows he can't trust his own judgement. He's been tricked before. He'll be tricked again. Don't trust anyone. Don't trust anything you see. This is another thing that works with either autism or plurality. The autism trauma of being lied to and deceived as "jokes" constantly turning you into a trust issue riddled mess that doesn't trust your own judgement or view of people, or a traumatized protector who FORMED to help you deal with people taking advantage of you and now distrusts everyone you love because "it happened before, it'll happen again, i wont let it happen." Or both!
God. I just LOVE ???% y'all don't understand. He's everything to me. Please god read the manga. I don't know if the translation I read was completely accurate, but I love the manga and anime both so so much. ???% is my favorite character as anyone who knows me can tell you and I will never shut up about him. My GUY

Days Spent Missing You.
ahh !! fic numbero dos ! this one is a gojo x reader fic, love my blue eyed king :))
IT DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR ANIME AND MANGA!
cw: a bit angsty? some talk about scars, but nothing explicit.
word count: 1.3k
Tumblr media
Your breath was bated, your heart beat quickened.
“Gojo-sensei has been released.” Itadori told you, all bright smiles and excitement at the thought of his sensei being back. Of being able to correct all of his supposed wrongs over these past two long weeks.
But you felt your stomach flip at the words, your mind completely whiting out at the possibility. You had fought just as hard with everyone to get him back, to unseal him. But there was always a small whisper in the back of your mind, preparing your body, your soul.
What if he couldn’t be unsealed?
All that came crashing down the second those words left the young boys lips. Disbelief clearly written on your wide eyes and slack jaw. “Seriously?!”
You didn’t dare let the hope that was dangerously curling around your chest, squeezing your lungs so tight you could barely pull a breath inbetween your lips. Without responding to you, Itadori grabbed your hand and began pulling you along.
Almost dumbly, you followed him. Letting him pull you along as you focused on trying not to trip on your own two feet. Wanting to think of anything but the man you might be on the way to seeing, after what felt like an eternity of not hearing his teasing voice or feeling his comforting weight as he practically laid ontop of you.
You continued to be pulled along, focusing your eyes on the ground. Not wanting to look up incase you laid eyes upon him far too soon. Your not ready, you don’t think you’ll ever be ready.
You had spent countless nights staring up at the ceiling, tearing silently tracking down your cheeks as you clutched his pillow. You remembered all the nights you guys had spent together, not even just the ones spent wrapped in eachother. Legs tangled together, breaths intermingling. But the nights spent cuddled into eachother, so close you couldn’t tell where one ended and one began. The hushed whispers of meaningless conversations, trying to hold back giggles as he made you laugh harder than anyone you’ve ever known.
You hadn’t laughed since he got sealed.
It was like the joy had been ripped from you and trapped in that god forsaken box right along side him. Your eyes dimmed and your voice had no inflection, speaking in dull monotones as you tried to focus on the next task ahead. The next task that would hopefully lead you closer to getting him back to you.
Too much had happened between Shibuya, the Culling Games and then now for you to have even thought about processing the well of emotions that had sat painfully against your heart. And now that everything was all coming to a head, that you might actually see the love of your life again. Nothing felt real, not the hand wrapped tightly around your wrist, or the dirt you can feel under your worn out soles.
You heard him before you saw him, the voice all too familiar. On instinct, your head raised. Catching the glimpse of stark white hair, you felt the familiar all encompassing aura that was his cursed technique.
“Gojo-Sensei!” Itadori called you, waving his hand in the air. You could tell he felt lighter now that he was back, who wouldn’t. His smile was easier, his steps were lighter, his eyes didn’t carry the weight of all the horrors he had seen. Instead they shone, maybe not as bright as when you first met him, but mugh brighter than they had all those days ago.
“Satoru.” The name fell from your lips, breathless. Before you had even realized what you were doing, the next thing you felt was a solid chest and arms snuggly around your waist. You practically jumped into him, legs wrapping tightly around his torso. Arms almost crushing his neck, head buried so far into his neck. Your eyes were tightly shut as you willed yourself not to cry.
“Hey, pretty girl.” He whispered gently in your ear, it made your heart flutter. You stood no chance against the tidalwave that was your emotions. The tears flowing freely down your face.
“I missed you, you stupid stupid idiot.” You said wetly, a giggle following your words. A poor attempt at trying to be mad at him, you both knowing that could never last long. He chuckled at your antics, you felt him kiss your forehead and spin you around playfully. Pulling squeals and giggles from your lips and forcing you to hold on tighter to his muscular frame. Not that you had anything to complain about.
“I know I know. I’m terrible. I’m so sorry,” His voice dipping into the sadness he felt deep in his heart. “I’ve missed you so much too.”
After Satoru had properly went around saying hi to everyone, getting filled in on all the new mishaps and events. You strayed never far from his side, your hands always intertwined or even shamelessly you found yourself sitting in his lap. He was always more of a pda person than you were, but after all this time apart you couldn’t find yourself caring much. As long as you could feel the steady heartbeat underneath your ear, and hear his timbre voice flow over your figure.
The long day left you both emotionall exhausted, and yet here you both sat. Criss cross on your shared bed, simply staring at eachother. Eyes never leaving eachothers frames, almost too scared to look away for too long least the other disappear before their very eyes.
“C’mere.” He mumbled, holding his arms outwards towards you. Silently, you crawled forward. Situating yourself into his embrace, you sat straddling him. Your legs on either side of his hips, caging him in. Your arms wrapping around his middle, your head buried into his chest.
“Let me see you.” He whispered, pulling your face from his chest. His heart aching at how different you looked since he last saw you. His fingers gently tracing over the new scars you sported on your face, his thumbs swiping under the dark circles ever present under your eyes.
A frown tugging at his lips and he took in all that you had to go through without him. It made him angry, angry at that brain curse, angry at himself, angry at all of jujustu society. You hadn’t deserved that, he told you. He promised he would always be there to protect you, and yet when you needed him most he had to get stuck in a fucking box.
You watched as his thoughts overtook, his eyes glossing over slightly. “Hey, ‘toru.” You said, lifting your hand up to cup his cheek. Hoping to bring him back to the present day.
The clairty returns in his vision at your gentle touch, instintually he leaned into it, nuzzling into your hand. You giggled at his antics, he turned his face to kiss your palm. Closing his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath in. He opened his mouth to speak, but before the words could come out,
“I don’t blame you.” Your voice was stern, it rang with a finality that took him by surprised. You knew him better than most anyone else, you knew exactly where his mind was going and you couldn’t sit back and let him destroy himself over something he didn’t do on purpose. “So, don’t blame yourself either.”
Your last words were gently, hushed as you leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. You attempted to pull away, but Satoru was quicker. He followed your lips, pressing them more firmly against each other. Your lips and tongues danced against eachother softly, and as you both pulled away panting heavily. Your foreheads rested against eachother, matching smiles on your faces.
“I love you.” You murmured into the undisturbed air.
“I love you more.”

YYH live action reaction from a kurahi perspective (spoilers ahead):
first, lower your expectations. second, understand this is not the anime and this is not the manga and there are only five episodes.
once you've done steps one and two -
they don't have many scenes together where they aren't fighting
we got to see them steal the artifacts - which i LOVE
kurama still sneaks up on hiei in the warehouse hiei is holed up in
hiei picks up his sword, but once he realizes it's kurama he puts it back down
the fact that kurama knows about yukina means hiei must have told him - so there's definitely a base line of trust between them
kurama actively trying to get hiei to NOT fight yusuke by trying to bargain with him, trading the shadow sword for information about yukina
the fact that kurama is searching for yukina at all
yusuke and hiei fight! and kurama breaks it up - this time without stepping in front of hiei's sword and getting stabbed, he slaps his whip in between them, reminded me of someone rolling up a newspaper and chiding 'no! stop it!'
kurama telling yusuke and kuwabara 'hiei is worried too. bear with him.' after hiei runs off to find yukina
hiei and kurama running into each other after their fights with bui and karasu, hiei immediately telling kurama he looks rough, kurama snapping back with 'i can't imagine you'll be able to use your right arm' causing hiei to puff out his chest and essentially say 'im fine' <-their classic dynamic, it made me so happy, kurama really saying 'you look like shit too, babe'
SAD NOTE: hiei does not get to see kurama in his youko form, so sadly, no horny hiei T_T
kurama pulling hiei away from toguro with his whip
after the toguro fight, kurama comes over to hiei and they share quite a few long looks where hiei hands the shadow sword to kurama (to give to koenma/yusuke) and then MORE SHARED LOOKS (kurama looked quite fond of hiei/just plain old happy with him)
hiei telling kuwabara off for talking to yukina and kurama quickly steps in between kuwabara and hiei, telling kuwabara to ignore him
overall -
at first, i was worried that we wouldn't get ANY scenes with kurama and hiei and then after the third episode on, we got quite a few.
kurama definitely plays the buffer for hiei and everyone. and hiei definitely tolerates kurama the most out of everyone.
so! i'm pretty happy with what we got.
i didn't expect much, but there were a few really lovely interactions and i really appreciated how proactive kurama was with finding yukina and seeming to care that hiei was not put in the same position as gouki with fighting yusuke/being in opposition with the spirit realm. and on the flip side, hiei definitely shows more respect for kurama's opinion and does indeed trust him (enough to even stop fighting yusuke and listen to kurama and take what kurama has to say as fact).
if you love the dynamic of kurama being the guy who has to keep apologizing for his boyfriend, you're gonna love it~

Show/Hide Sketch Layer Actions
Tumblr media
I uploaded this action set to Clip Studio Assets. Asset ID: 2083426
I was thinking to myself: I wish I could switch the sketch layer on and off without having to look for it and interrupt my drawing.
Because there's a reason why "turn off the sketch layer, drawing looks weird" meme exists. Having the sketch layer visible obscures the a lot of the mistakes on the drawing layer.
Being able to effortlessly turn it on and off would mean you can do it more often and check your drawing layer more often without hesitation.
Tumblr media
So here it is, after a few days of experimenting with auto-actions and some help from my friend teteotolis, and the community!
These actions look for a layer named "sketch" and switches its visibility on and off. No need to manually find the layer. No need to tap on the little square to toggle it.
If you bind it to some keyboard, or controller, or macro keypad shortcuts, it would be as seamless as how animators flip between pages when they animate.
Alternatively, you can add the auto-actions to the Command Bar or Quick Access palette.
It has some limitations: It will only target the lowest layer if you have multiple layers named "sketch", and you need two separate shortcuts: One for show, and another for hide.
Download it from the Clip Studio Assets page! 👇
Asset ID: 2083426
It was nice that this was possible at all. But ideally, we shouldn't need this auto-action.
I wish Clip Studio Paint itself would just have this as a feature instead of us having to hack it together. If you think this would be a good feature to have, please send the Clip Studio developers a feature request to them to let them know it's useful to you!
