Ladybug Week 2023 Day 1, Oct. 23rd: College AU

With a Freezerburn guest appearance.

This one's for all my fellow Ladybug fans. (All, like, 2 of them).

When I sat down to draw this my brain went on a tangent and created its own full-on fanfiction, lol.

Basically, Ruby is this super talented freshman in the engineering department who's been gaining the attention of all the professors since she enrolled. She singlehandedly became the lead of the Science and Technology committee, which both she and her buddy Penny attend.

Yang is on a sport scholarship and is part of the Volleyball team together with Blake. She and her buddy Pyrrha are the aces of the team. She's very talented at the sport despite not seeming to have any aspirations to pursue it as a career…? Like Ruby she's also enrolled in engineering.

Blake is the Visa student- her parents saved money their entire lives to send her to a good university in a first world country. She joined the volleyball team with the goal to save money with a scholarship, but ended up enjoying being part of the team. She's chronically broke and isn't legally allowed to work due to her Visa status, but her buddy Sun hooks her up with some shady jobs that she takes from time to time to earn some cash. She met Ruby through Yang, who started inviting her out for lunch to discuss their shared favorite books series. Blake only agreed at first for the free food but eventually ended up enjoying and seeking out Ruby's company.

Weiss is this turbo-preppy model student and the president of the Student Organization's Committees. She had some friction with Ruby at first due to their clashing personalities but they eventually grew to respect each other. She met Yang through Ruby and was immediately smitten. She's suspicious of Blake and thinks she and her buddy Sun are bad influences on Ruby.

Izuku bounces on his feet as Kacchan steps off the platform, unable to keep the smile off his face as red eyes catch sight of him. He waves, a tad manically.

"Kacchan!" He yells, ignoring the looks he gets. "Over here!"

Kacchan is followed over by several other, familiar looking people. A man that can only be Chargebolt leans forward.

"Oho! Who's this?"

"My pet stalker."

"Kacchan, that's not very nice," Izuku says absently.

Kacchan ruffles Izuku's hair with more force than necessary.

"I'm not very nice."

"That is true!" Chargebolt grins, stroking his chin faux-thoughtfully.

"So," Kacchan says next. "What's new in nerd-land?"

"Oh! Um, well... Did you read that paper I sent you?"

"That thing on fuckin' Freezerburn?"

"Yeah, about the indicators! Like how you've got your mom's skin-"

"I don't want to hear about my mom's skin." Kacchan groans.

Too bad.

"- Your mom's skin" Izuku continued, "as well as your quirk in your palms and-"

Izuku cuts himself off this time. Red Riot (his hair's not that bad, Kacchan) is waving his hand in the air like a student. So was the Alien Queen, with a shit-eating grin on her face, and then Chargebolt also started to flail about and nearly hit-

"Oh my god! Are you Cellophane?!"

"Not if he knows what's good for him." Kacchan mutters.

"It's an honour to meet you! I'm a big fan! I really loved what you did last week in that fight with Athenium- actually, um, wait, I think I have-"

He starts to rummage through his bag, but Kacchan is faster and snatches his notebook out with a hiss.

"No. They don't know you. We're not doing this."

"Kacchan." Izuku frowns.

"No."

Red Riot seems unable to contain himself any longer.

"Bakubro, who is this guy?" he shouts, at the same time as Alien Queen cheers.

"This must be that guy that Katsuki's always-"

Kacchan whirls around and slaps Izuku's notebook over her mouth, because he is an oaf with no respect for other people or their property. Izuku is what, Kacchan?

Whatever. Izuku brought extra notebooks today, just in case. He pulls one out, and a pen, and then Cellophane takes the pen? And Izuku's notebook? Oh, he's signing the notebook, that's nice of him.

"Here you go," Cellophane smiles, handing it back.

Izuku already has three Cellophane signatures that Kacchan mailed to him through Auntie, because Kacchan is the best but also weird, but this is cool too. Izuku will have to cut it out and paste it in his album later.

What he actually wants to know is-

"Um, what's your name? I can't call you Cellophane when you're on vacation..." He flips open to a new page, ready to start writing...

The silence stretches too long. He looks up to find Cellophane looking at him uncertainly.

"Actually..." Cellophane starts slowly-

"That's what we wanna ask you!" Chargebolt shouts excitedly, and then Kacchan steals Izuku's notebook, again, and his bag, and Izuku has more important things to worry about than social niceties.

"Bakugou Katsuki!" he screeches. "Get back here!"

He starts running after Kacchan, who must have lost his mind on the train ride over if he thinks Izuku is going to let him get away with this. He'll tell Auntie! He will!

Auntie will just laugh at him if Izuku tells her that Kacchan has taken up purse-snatching but she'll laugh at Kacchan too, and then Kacchan will be really annoyed, just like Izuku is right now, and he's taking up running as a hobby first thing tomorrow because he's tired now already and curse Kacchan's longer legs, Izuku is going to cut them off-

They leave the Bakusquad blinking in their dust.

So I've been thinking about it these last few days but I might take a few weeks off of writing. It's not that I'm feeling any writers block or anything but for the sake of my mental health, it's shot right now 😭.

I know I'm slow on some stories and incrediblely fast on others and working on one-shots when yeah I could be working on what I have currently out. I'm sorry to those who are waiting on more of my Medieval Ladybug and High School Freezerburn, Street Racer Ladybug just really got me by the throat right now.

I've been on and off debating on restarting the second part to medieval Ladybug for many reasons due to just how it is. But I don't know. I'm still going to continue it but that's still on my back burner. So again I'm sorry to those who are waiting.

I'm in my oof state of everything I do sucks so trying to get out of that 😭. I love what I do and write and truly yes how much I write is really obsessive but hey it be what it be.

I'll be back on it eventually, so sorry again to make y'all wait 😭 this isn't me disappearing, I still want to finish Street Racer and the other stories I have out.

There is no meal more inventive, more genuine, more delectable, more delightful than the thing you put together out of all the end bits and leftovers that would otherwise go in the bin.

I'm convinced this should replace potlucks. A whole friend group gathers together in the house of the person with the largest kitchen, wielding last halves of dry shallots, 1/3rd cups of oat and rice flour, the last quarter of a box of crackers, half cans of corned beef, the barely-touched packet of coconut sugar that never found a home, the pasta from the Kraft Dinner box when all you wanted was the sauce packet, the Too Much Zucchini Please Eat It, the packet of freezerburned something just labeled "Meat", the end bits of a bag of Italian spice too paltry for a Sunday sauce, the three meatballs rolling around in an oversized bag, the undated preserves, the knobby ends of Polish sausages, the ambitious amount of cooked white rice made yesterday and left mostly uneaten, the salt lamp that fell on the counter and shattered into an ingredient, the one fucking tomato that your garden saw fit to produce that year...

In the chaos of flailing arms and boiling water and jars passed around for sniff tests, magic will be made - sure as last week's internet recipe penne, sure as dawn on distant worlds.

Yang stares at the note stuck to the mirror, her eyes heavy with sleep and she rubs at them. she reads the note again, huffing slightly before she reaches for her toothbrush. That's just like Weiss, reminding her of the simple things as if she'd forget.

As a history teacher and a bartender, both girls worked odd hours. Weiss is an early riser, while Yang barely rises before noon. Her shifts take her well into the night, and by the time she drags herself back home, Weiss is fast asleep. with the vastly different schedules, sticky notes left on objects have been the current way to communicate.

New creamer in the firdge - w is written on a blue note taped to the coffee pot that's sitting at a low simmer. Yang pours herself a cup carefully and adds the milk, sipping the contents as she fingers the paper. the creamer is caramel, her known favorite, and her chest fills with warmth from something other than the steaming drink.

Putting the empty cup in thev sink, she rummages through the junk drawer and scribbles on a piece a paper.

I’ll be home earlier tonight. Stay awake for me? Yang sticks the note onto the door of their bedroom, a place Weiss is sure to see it, before diving into her closet to find her shoes.

Tucking her wallet into her backpack, Yang stuffs half a bagel into her mouth as she reaches the front door, keys in one hand and a second cup of coffee in the other. She struggles to close it, the keys jangeling as she tries to put them into the lock. She lets out an annoyed grumble and sighs when the door finally locks, her eyes spotting another sticky note taped to the front door.

I love you - W, it reads and Yang smiles as she takes it, and tucks it into her back pocket.

About you getting hate for liking the Freezerburn ship and then getting even more hate for politely asking to be left alone:

idk what the fndm's been drinking lately to get like this but it's kind of everywhere nowadays, which is one reason I no longer participate in things like the freezerburn ship week or stuff like that. It's become so popular to cyberbully people in this fandom, especially if they hold any opinion outside the extremely limited and strictly enforced one-way-only 'acceptable' opinion, and for some inexplicable reason, Freezerburn has been declared Unacceptable and Wrong and Bad, and that goes double for the shippers.

I once saw someone say that shipping Freezerburn was "homophobic."

A ship... between two female main characters... is "homophobic..."

The reason given as to why it was "homophobic" to ship those two characters was because the person making the declaration irrationally declared that every single Freezerburn shipper is also a BlackSun shipper and furthermore declared that the "only reason" anyone could ever possibly claim to like Freezerburn was if they were "pairing Yang off with a random girl so they could force Blake to belong to a man without being accused of homophobia"

I also once saw someone say that shipping Freezerburn was "disrespectful" and "egotistical" and "ungrateful" and - again - "homophobic" because Yang kisses Blake in canon and apparently that means that every viewer is legally obligated to praise the ship and make it the center of all their fics and fanart, because anything less is you "choosing to hate bumblby because you're a homophobe" and "failing to show the proper gratitude and reverence to the writers" and "stuck up and conceited and arrogant enough to think you could come up with better ideas than the writers" and "disrespecting all their hard work"

Aaaaand I've also seen people post lists of "rules" that every fic-writer or fan-artist is apparently required to follow, and if they don't then they get written off as "part of the HTDM" and they become a socially-acceptable target for cyberbullying and harassment, on the grounds that "the HTDM refuses to respect rwby, so why should we respect them?" And what'd'ya know, one of the many rules every fan is now expected to follow is literally "you must ship bumblby and you must make Blake and Yang get together, and you cannot pair either character with anyone else in the series."

I'll tell you what; the show claims to be about artistic expression, freedom of speech, and trusting love - but the biggest fans never got the memo.

No one is allowed to make art unless it is Canon-Compliant

No one is allowed to express an opinion unless it is a Glowing 5-Star 10/10 Two Thumbs Up monetizable recommendation

And no one will choose kindness if you break either of those two rules. Differences and Dissent are the enemies in this fndm, and if you get pronounced guilty of them, you become an acceptable target.

Because you ship two female main-characters with each other

Just not the ones that became canon

And the fndm seems unwilling to confront the fact that "doesn't ship bumblby" isn't included in the definition of Homophobia - but "attacking people and inciting hate against them through smearing their reputation and getting them branded as a toxic monster for no other reason than they posted content about a wlw ship on their tumblr" kind of is

Anyway Freezerburn is awesome

Ah. Yeah I've been out of the fandom for a minute, fell out around volume 4 and came back in with a recent rewatch so I was around when Shipping freezerburn was less controversial I guess. That and one of the only people in this fandom I've been following for the past decade is a multishipper who only posts postive content.

But this all does track. I did at one point ship Blacksun but it's been years since that happened and I find a lot of enjoyment in Blake and Sun's sibling/friend dynamic more than anything.

Even funnier since my post that started this mentioned that I support Yang having two girlfriends, but I have seen how serious rwby fans get about people criticizing the show even before I left. I remember when there were wars about posting in the rwde tag and fans who would start fights with bloggers for posting in it because they didn't think people were being nice enough in the rwde tag despite it being labeled that way for a reason.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain fandom history I missed out on to me.

Been a freezerburn shipper since volume 2, and surprisingly, that hasn't changed even after 6 years of being gone. If there's one thing I'll always support, it's Yang and her many suitors.

I have been tagged by @evelhak, and it has been a long while since something like that has happened, so let's go:

5 Songs - Gira Gira by Ado. It's on YouTube, please watch it with subtitles if you don't speak Japanese, it is worth it. Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser by The Mechanisms. It gives you a very good idea of what The Mechanisms are about. Birth of a New Witch by Luck Ganriki. My personal favourite track on the Umineko OST, and that's saying a lot because that OST is full of bangers. Song of the Ancients -Atonement- by Keiichi Okabe. Another song from a video game, justice for Devola and Popola! That's why I Gave Up on Music cover by Shiranui Flare. One of the first music tracks uploaded by Flare, and one of the early reasons why I became an elfriend.

Three Ships you Like - Gosh, there are so many to choose from. I think my first is Freezerburn (Weiss/Yang) from RWBY. They have a great dynamic, although content for them isn't exactly plentiful these days, I do believe that it is the best ship for both of them. Next comes KuroMayaNana (Claudine/Maya/Nana) from Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight. KuroMaya is good, throwing Nana in there adds some real spice though. Just think about the dynamic of Maya and Claudine both *knowing* that Nana was stronger than Maya throughout the auditions. Finally... Edeleth (Edelgard/Byleth) from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I will not defend my actions.

First Ship Ever - Mudshipping (Isaac/Mia) from Golden Sun. Golden Sun was my first true fandom, and mudshipping was the default, because at that point... there weren't many female characters that were as fleshed out.

Favourite Childhood Book - Redwall by Brian Jacques. This is where I fell in love with fantasy. Should I ever get a pair of pet rats, one would be named Cluny (the other would Ratimus Prime).

Currently Reading - Demonic Devourer Book 2 by Aaron Shih. Yeah this one is power-fantasy popcorn, but with the way things are, it lets my brain turn off for a bit during work. I'm not counting the untold half-finished books that I'll get to someday(tm).

Currently Watching - For the first time in a long while, I've been watching a fair bit of anime as it's released, so this'll be a bit long. The Apothecary Diaries best show from last season, though not as strong currently, the last episode was incredible. Shangri-La Frontier continuing from last season, and good mindless fodder. The Witch and The Beast which does monster of the week over 2+ episodes and is great. Both of the protagonists are incredibly compelling. Solo Levelling mostly because it's been hyped up. It hasn't impressed really, but it also hasn't been a tremendous let down. I'll give it the season, but if it doesn't step up its game and gets a second season, I'll probably drop it. A couple of others that I don't really have anything to say about.

Currently Craving - Things that interest me. That's all I ever really crave, because my primary positive to negative emotional spectrum isn't happy to said, but interested to bored.

i don't know how coherent this is gonna come out, but like, something something something the way jules acts in the kitchen tells so much of the story of her. her family, her background, her class. she can afford the good stuff, she gets the good stuff, she loves the good stuff, but when she finds mold on the cheese in the fridge she just cuts it off and uses the rest. she wasn't raised to waste good food. she plans for leftovers. when she feels nostalgic, she still gets the cheapest cuts of meat, cooks them the way nonna used to for sunday dinner. her job keeps her money-rich but time-poor; so much leisure money and so little leisure living. she gets takeout. she gets takeout. she spends a week, a month planning for one day off, twelve hours uninterrupted in the kitchen, dreams in clouds of semolina and steam, the portions she'll bring her nieces and nephews all grown up just across the river. her boss calls. the teeth on the other end of the phone line are sharper than hers. she goes into work. when she finally gets home, the eggs are cloudy in the flour-bowl where she left them. she throws the mess against the wall. she gets takeout.

her kitchen is well-stocked but it doesn't have a garlic press. she's no snob but she thinks some things you ought to do right, if you're going to do them at all. she takes her rings off and slivers each clove with a knife, the way her uncles always did, the way they do it in that movie. she keeps her knives sharp. she brings meat home from work, sometimes. cheaper than the cheap cuts; the bosses don't want it. needs some butchery but at least it's already drained. she doesn't share that with her family. they wouldn't like it; they don't have the taste. she cooks it fresh when she can but usually she freezes it, carefully. she wasn't raised to waste good food, and she just so rarely has the time. she tries not to let it get freezerburned. she gets takeout.
