In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
At last it is tomato season in my garden. We picked the first of the ‘Early Girl’ tomatoes before leaving on vacation ten days ago. I prefer an heirloom like ‘Cherokee Purple’, which has yet to produce fruit, but my husband prefers a “regular” tomato and ‘Early Girl’ is more reliable here in the fog belt.
These are the May planted tomatoes, but the mid-July transplants are catching up. For details see Rethinking Tomatoes in the Fog Belt.
The prized, though small harvest for the week was some of the cannellini beans. The first sowing germinated poorly and I’m waiting for additional pods to dry. The succession planting has done much better and the yield should be more substantial.. This was an experiment since I’ve never grown beans for drying. The cranberry bean plants are robust and the pods are beginning to dry. Read about my cranberry bean experiment here.
Most of the trellised ‘Chelsea Prize’ cucumbers from Renee’s Garden look like this. Generally, I harvest two or three such gems daily and neighbors receive them eagerly. Soon, the plants will decide the season is over and they will stop producing, usually before I tire of homegrown cakes.
I removed one of the two ‘Raven’ zucchini plants and the remaining one produces at a manageable pace now.
French sorrel frequently subs for lettuce after harvesting the last of the summer romaine. I purchased lettuce recently for the first time in about nine months. I may sow a container of mesclun lettuce that I can keep in partial shade.
My daughter-in-law requested chive vinegar so I obliged with apple cider and another vinegar.
My husband keeps the rhubarb from overhanging the grass so at times, a pile will show up which usually leads to sauce or a dessert.
I am still enchanted by the ‘Queen Red Lime’ zinnias. These days there’s always a bouquet on the dining room table and enough to share with friends, which keeps the plants blooming.
I’ve added a new to page my website. Check Garden Tasks This Week. Notable was a soil drench of Epsom salts for the tomatoes and peppers. Then head over to see what other garden bloggers around the world harvested last week at Harvest Monday hosted by Dave at Happy Acres blog.

Rare Bloody Dock Red Sorrel Seeds Heirloom Non-GMO BN50 Bloody Dock Red Sorrel (Rumex sanguineus). Stunning foliage plant with elongated, medium green leaves, exquisitely veined in a brilliant burgundy-purple. A hardy perennial, it quickly forms an attractive clump, which sends up red flower clusters in early summer, followed by brown seed heads. A superb, deer-resistant accent plant. Count: 50+ 6-12 hours of Sun Sprouts in 10-14 Days Ideal Temperature: 65-75 Degrees F Seed Depth: 1/4" Plant Spacing: 10-12" Frost Hardy: Yes Type: Annuals, Perennials Sun Exposure: Full Sun Water: Regular Water Family: Polygonaceae Type: Annuals, Perennials Sun Exposure: Full Sun Water: Regular Water Planting Zones: 4-11 Family: Polygonaceae Rumex sanguineus (Red) Sorrel is grown for their edible leaves, which can be used raw in salads or cooked in soups, sauces, egg dishes. The flavor is like that of sharp, sprightly spinach, but sorrel is more heat tolerant and produces throughout the growing season. Common sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is a larger plant (to 3 feet tall), with leaves 6 inches long, many shaped like elongated arrowheads. It is native to northern climates. French sorrel (R. scutatus) is a more sprawling plant, to 112 feet high, with shorter, broader leaves and a milder, more lemony flavor than R. acetosa. Native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. The oxalic acid found in sorrel can replace lemon, which is often added to smoothies to balance out the taste. Grow sorrel in reasonably good soil. Sow seeds in early spring; thin seedlings to 8 inches apart. Or set out transplants at any time, spacing them 8 inches apart. Pick tender leaves when they are big enough to use; cut out flowering stems to encourage leaf production. Replace (or dig and divide) plants after 3 or 4 years. The plant grows to about 2 feet in height in clumps with pink flowers in racemose appearing during early summer. Growing Tips: Harvest tender leaves starting in early spring, remove flowering tops to keep leaves tender and to prevent unwanted volunteers. May become invasive in some climates. Like any other greens, wash sorrel clumps thoroughly in clean running water and rinse in salt water for about 30 minutes in order to remove dirt and any insecticide residues. The fresh herb should be used early to get maximum nutrition. To store, keep wrapped in a damp towel and place in the refrigerator for extended use (up to 3 days). Sorrel uses – Add to soups – Make it into a sauce for fish – Add to omelets and scrambled eggs – Add to stuffing for meat – Shred sorrel and stuff it into fish – Add to quiches – Add to mashed potatoes – Add to hummus – Add to pasta – Add to mixed-leaf and herb salads – Add to chard and spinach anywhere you would use those – Use as a filling for buckwheat crêpes – Make it into a pesto, to use in pasta, on pizzas, or with grilled salmon – Sorrel Smoothie Note: No tracking # will be provided to make the shipping cost-effective for us and free for you. MCC Teams for QSMP Guys
Disclaimer: These aren't official teams or even official predictions or anything. I have no idea if the QSMP guys who aren't in MCC already want to play or even know it exists. I'm just autistic.
RED RABBITS: HBomb94, Philza, Forever, Cellbit
This was the first team that came to me and it all spiraled out of control from here. H is the master of teaching new players, which is good if it's not a whole event of new people (spoiler alert: it is). Philza is also a solid player who knows the Brazilians well enough to teach them how to do MCC and also hold his own just fine. I expect Forever would hold his own just fine. A lot of the games that are hard for newcomers are hard because a lot of MCC guests aren't Minecrafters. I expect Forever to be able to handle himself with an elytra, for example, and H is the SOT king and also a Buildmart enjoyer so he can pick up the slack for the rest. Cellbit may be an unexpected popoff in Parkour Tag with his Esconde-Esconde experience. I'm not sure if he's ever touched an elytra.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Cellbit. He can have red puzzle too though, as a treat. And the rest of the spawn puzzles will actually get solved for once!
ORANGE OCELOTS: Roier, Tubbo, Quackity, Punz
Roier is Good At Minecraft but he's also shy about the fact that he's good at Minecraft and not particularly interested in tryharding. He would most likely be looking for a team that isn't throwing on purpose, but also doesn't mind if he's not doing homework for the video game. Pairing him with known goofball Tubbo and good buddy Quackity makes sense for that. Punz is a very versatile S tier. He's fully capable of being a sweaty little bastard, but he's good at not being toxic about it and especially at not getting toxic towards his teammates. I think he could do well with just hanging out with a couple old friends and making sure a new one has a good time.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Quackity is the best choice as the full bilingual and least likely to survive in the tunnels.
YELLOW YAKS: Shadoune, Etoiles, Aypierre, Baghera
The French Team. Frankly, I think the chance of Etoiles getting into MCC is pretty slim. He is simply too powerful. Scott has talked before about having enough S tiers and needing more mid and lower tier players and Etoiles would Not help with that. Adding Shadoune and Aypierre to that is honestly a bit ridiculous. Baghera is not a nerf to this team either. She doesn't have nearly as much Minecraft experience as the others but she is learning very quickly. I did nearly switch her out to try and balance this obscenely powerful team. Their big weakness though is their MCC inexperience. Shadoune is the only one who has played MCC before and he hasn't even been in a handful of events yet. Late games with high learning curves could seriously hamstring them.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Pierre. I was super super impressed with Pierre's comms with Foolish when they broke into the Federation and I want to see him do comms more.
LIME LLAMAS: Illumina, Spreen, Slimecicle, Mariana
Yeah, okay, this is Pink17 with a twist. This is the only chance we're gonna have to pair Spreen with another S tier though so we gotta take it. To be fair, I don't actually know how good Mariana is at Minecraft. That being said, I do know he's not super comfortable in his English abilities. This is essentially two teams speaking two languages wearing a giant trenchcoat, so I figured it would be best to give them Illumina, king of minding his own business and showing up at the end of the game with half his team's coins.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Slime. The Spanish speakers know more English than the English speakers know Spanish and asking someone to sandkeep in their second language in their first MCC is cruel.
GREEN GECKOS: Jojo, Vegetta, Maximus, OllieGamerz
The Spanish Team. I really tried so hard to pair Vegetta with Foolish, but ultimately I think he would just be most comfortable with people who all speak his own language. This is another scary powerful team, by the way. Jojo and Ollie were half the team that got the first canon team with two new players a win since MCC 6 and Vegetta is widely considered to be a Minecraft god. I'm not sure his skills transfer to MCC, but it can't hurt! Maxo is here instead of Mariana despite being more comfortable with English because I couldn't deprive the people of their Slimeriana crumbs, however he's another one whose MCC skill I'm not sure of. He's known mostly for his RP like Quackity Slime and Wilbur, but he also has an extremely dope Create mod house so he's definitely more cracked at the craft than them.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Ollie. He's trained for it and studied for it before his first MCC and Vegetta and Maximus should both be able to at least survive dungeon conditions.
CYAN COYOTES: Mike, Pac, Fruitberries, Cubfan
Obviously, Tazercraft come as a duo. Do not separate. For them, I wanted people who matched their energy. Specifically, strange, bewildering, and staggeringly competent, while still making the most baffling decisions you've ever seen in your life. Fruitberries was an obvious choice. I think introducing them to Cubfan might be dangerous lest they give each other ideas for projects, but hopefully they'll be too focused on the games for any old projects to come up. I sure hope none of the games resemble any games Tazercraft have previously designed!
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Cubfan. He is like the Only guy in MCC who I trust equally as a runner and a sandkeeper which means that I trust him to sandkeep here.
AQUA AXOLOTLS: PeteZahHutt, Jaiden, Fit, CPK
This is just a pretty regular MCC team. Pete and CPK is a very strong combination and I don't expect Fit to be bad at Minecraft, but given the absolute powerhouses that are the French and Spanish teams, I think this is probably fine.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Fit. Pete has a habit of making risky plays that don't always pay off. I think the scary teacher voice could check that impulse.
BLUE BATS: Badboyhalo, Krtzyy, Smallishbeans, Grian
Here's a PG team for you, king. You've earned it. Yes, Dave can be PG when they need to be. For the record, I'm deeply curious about what Bad puts down on his sign up sheet for his PGness preference. Either way, this is a team of all around strong players without a standout star. We're looking at a repeat of Aqua29 here.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Krtzyy. Everyone on this team can run but Dave enjoys it the least and actually had their first decent time ever playing Sands of Time as a sandkeeper for Aqua29. They've been playing since MCC1 by the way.
PURPLE PANDAS: Scott, Shubble, Foolish, Purpled
This is the part of the teams list when I went "okay I guess I'm making a full ten teams now, so I have to get the guys with standing invitations in". For the record, that's Scott (it's his event), Shubble (she's Scott's bestie), and Wilbur (he was one of the earliest believers). Purpled is here instead of Wilbur because he's Ever So Slightly More Cracked At The Craft, however this team is actually impossible and would never happen in canon. Scott Smajor has made it very clear that he would never put Purpled on the Purple team. Anyway, Foolish is also here!
Sorrel Assigned Sanddaddy: Scott.
PINK PARROTS: FireBreathMan, Felps, AntoineDaniel, Wilbur Soot
Y'all remember everyone wailing and gnashing their teeth about Blue29 because FBM was being unfairly nerfed by being saddled with three "bad" players and it was so incredibly mean to those players he was with and also like they got 6th overall and did Literally Fine? No? Only me carrying that grudge? Anyway, here's a perfectly fair and balanced team that no one would complain about at all. No but for real, this is the team I couldn't switch Antoine and Baghera on because that would break it.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Wilbur. Sorry Scott got to the daddy joke first.

Oxalis corniculata (creeping wood sorel)
Ode to a weed
Creeping wood sorrel doesn't need much. it hasn't rained in weeks but a crack in the sidewalk is enough to produce this very healthy specimen. This plant originated in South East Asia and made it to Europe by the 1500's. It's tiny seeds can be spread by ants and birds but the expansion of human civilization has been the main driver. There are 570 species in the genus Oxalis but this species has established itself in suitable habitats around the world.
According to the Global Invasive Species Database,
"Oxalis corniculata is thought to be invasive in many areas including: Australasia-Pacific (such as Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Hawaii, French Polynesia, Palau, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands), Asia (such as Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea), Central America (Cayman Islands) and North America (Canada). Regardless of area, it has been noticed as an invasive and weedy plant."
Personally, I like this plant's 'pluck' and it's little yellow flowers. When I see a plant like this growing in a crack in the sidewalk, I think of the words to the Frank Sinatra classic, New York, New York, "If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere."

"New" Mtl OC (she's actually my oldest oc and her mtl verse has existed in my head for years now lol)
Sorrel was a French pop star back in the 80s, but when her star faded she redirected her focus towards science. She has a PhD in chemical engineering. During the early seasons, she was one of the scientists working with Dr. Amonolith Chesterfield to help develop the drug that would later be used to control Snakes N' Barrels. Later in the show, she's hired by Charles and she joins Mordhaus' team of scientists.
Fast facts:
Aro-ace
Snakes N' Barrels is her favorite band of all time.
Actually, it's the only band she listens to.
Seriously, she only owns one CD and it's No Time For Antivenom.

Sorry I have to scream somewhere after seeing your Reddit comment. CATULLUS 16 SHIPPED VOLDEMORT/DYLAN THOMAS. Dylan Thomas who wrote Do not go gentle into that good night. 🤣🤟
:D I feel folks get hung up on eldritcher's Tomarry or whatever but meanwhile the real deal is Voldemort crushing hard on famous poets, politicians and mathematicians. Obviously this is super reductive. These fics are incredibly hard to describe. But I love his dick thirst. Off the top of my head
Cat16 - Of course Dylan Thomas. Also everybody else. This Voldemort is the dickchaser. He just needs a dick with a pulse, ok?
EotF - Voldemort is chasing Viktor Krum's dick because he has got this crush on Vasil Levski, Bulgarian national hero. Also his crush on the Mahatma. In conclusion, his dick is into history.
Entschiedungsproblem - Alan Turing. Enough said.
Republic - the statue of Augustus. I mean.
Omphale - Agnes Sorrel the French King's sidechick with one boob fashion
I am definitely forgetting a lot of other cases of Voldemort's VIP dick thirst but yeah the only version with dick selfcontrol is the version in Pandemic probably. Which makes sense. He is a cryptobro. Cryptobros ain't getting any.

New project, can you help sharing it?
Hey folks it’s a big day today. After weeks of work the Wicked Wanderers Winter Bundle is live.
It kind of started a looong time ago. When I was a kid, I grew up in a super boring place, a small secluded village in a French island, and before discovering RPGs, the thing that gave me the most joy was a thing called Pochettes Suprises: Surprise Bags. Small paper bags containing a dozen random cheap plastic and cardboard toys: a plane, a soldier, a doll, a dino. They cost just a buck and we all loved them because they were modular: we could invent stories and games for weeks with just a single Pochette.
Tumblr media
This sparked the idea behind this bundle I’m releasing today: bring together a pack of cool and beautiful zines and gaming accessories to make a cool grown up TTRPG enthusiast version of the Pochettes. The bundle has a strong vibe and a super modular structure, with 2 full zines, NPCs, adventure hooks, dice drop map, solo oracles and even a solo prisoncrawl game and more. It contains 15 items made by mostly emergent designers: I'm trying to support new voices with the store. You might know several of them: Philipp Teich, Foresight Studio, Christian Sorrell/Meatcastle, Philip Jensen, Nyhur, Alfred Valley. There are some super interesting and diverse takes on Mörk Borg, even a few mini adventures with a Mythos vibe.
Right now social media is in a bit of a turmoil, so if you feel like it could you help us give some visibility to it?
Here's a link, you'll find more info on the bundle here https://www.thelostbaystudio.com/products/wicked-wanderers-winter-bundle
BTW This a pochette surprise, the original childhood thing that sparked the idea for this bundle

Hey I finally updated my ASOUE fic! As a reminder, Sunny is now Sorrel (he/she/they) and has been separated from his family for years. They seek out Olaf to help her reunite with them.
“I made us breakfast,” Sorrel said.
Olaf finally seemed to jolt awake and notice that Sorrel had, in fact, been cooking. He stared at the pile for a moment. “Don't you hate me?”
Sorrel waited until Olaf looked back up from the French toast. He wanted to give Olaf a nice, strong glare as he spoke. Maybe if he did, this time it would stick in Olaf's head. “My siblings hate you. I don't remember you. I don't care if you're a good person. I know you're not. I just care if you can find them.”

Bloody Dock Red Sorrel and Green Belleville Sorrel Mix, Varieties Heirloom Non-GMO BN50 Green Belleville Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is appreciated in native cuisines throughout Europe and in many parts of Asia and Africa, as well. A perennial, it is available in early spring, before many annual crops have even been sown! The lemony tartness of the young succulent leaves gives a tangy twist to salads. Widely used in soups; combine with spinach for an authentic spanikopita. This cultivated variety with clear green leaves is much slower bolting than the wild species. Bloody Dock Red Sorrel (Rumex sanguineus). 6-12 hours of Sun Sprouts in 10-14 Days Ideal Temperature: 65-75 Degrees F Seed Depth: 1/4" Plant Spacing: 10-12" Frost Hardy: Yes Type: Annuals, Perennials Sun Exposure: Full Sun Water: Regular Water Family: Polygonaceae Type: Annuals, Perennials Sun Exposure: Full Sun Water: Regular Water Planting Zones: 4-11 Family: Polygonaceae Rumex acetosa (Green) Rumex sanguineus (Red) Two similar species are grown for their edible leaves, which can be used raw in salads or cooked in soups, sauces, egg dishes. The Menu - Thoughts
My father used to be a Real Estate Appraiser for most of his career, first on the private sector and then for Montreal's City Hall. It's the kind of job that doesn't come with a lot of perks, except for an office-paid Expenses account that allows for small displays of largesse, mostly to flatter a client's ego or appease someone else's doubts. Repeated exposures would sometimes result in small, more personal perks; like getting to know someplace's sous-chef by their first name, cracking jokes in out-of-office settings and eventually scoring the occasional token of friendship. Say a pass at an exceedingly ritzy table, the kind where everything is deconstructed, remixed, replated, revised and reviewed, and a table for three with four courses each goes for well over a few thousand bucks. Normally.
I say normally, because I grew up with the sous-chef's daughter, skinned my knees on the same rough concrete stairs in Montreal. She was my friend for a long time. We shared toys, hobbies, game consoles - and the occasional table.
Twice in all my life, I was given a rare gift.
Take what I've just described, convince yourself that you'll never taste it, see it for yourself, spend years thinking that food's just something you use to either find comfort or fuel yourself - and then get invited at that kind of table.
Not because you've got the cash for it, not because you're their usual clientèle, far from it - but because you're a friend.
The one course that's etched into my brain is a kind of phyllo pastry, but lighter and bigger than your usual stuff - like a blown-out and refined spanakopita, except it's not just feta cheese and spinach. Oh, no. It's organic goat cheese fresh from this morning, with a drizzle of sorrel sauce. The plate is eons above your pay grade and at the time, if you're me, you're still a teen eking out a living with some volunteer work that occasionally translates to a paycheck. A few hundred words here and there and bam - the big finish. Three hundred bucks richer.
That plate was something I could've never afforded, something I was never so much as born to eat. But there it is. Sorrel sauce and goat cheese, with puff pastry's snootier cousin crackling between my teeth, ever-so-sweet.
What tasted the best in it was the friendship I could sense. The exclusivity of the moment. I'd earned my way to this dish for free with years of bad barbecues, of letting Jenny win at Mario Kart, of helping her out with French while she tortured multiplication tables out of me. This was something some bougie asshat would've paid for with a Platinum Amex; and it was something I'd paid for in time. In patience. In kindness. In realizing that food, sometimes, is a gift. When that gift is given freely, it tastes all the better.
The Menu, directed by Mark Mylod, is what you'd get if some of the chefs I ended up getting to know could speak freely, sometimes, or what you'd get if Ratatouille's Anton Ego had been an ass and had driven Remy the Rat to nadirs of obsession. We follow one Margot Mills (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she seemingly serves as the accompaniment to foodie Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) during an evening at Hawthorne's.
What is Hawthorne's, you might ask? It's the isolated island restaurant helmed by the ultra-perfectionist Julian Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes. Forget your usual celebrity chefs, Slowik is someone that's talked about but rarely seen, the exclusive priest of Epicurus to an even more exclusive table - the kind of place that invites you by text, instead of waiting for you to place a reservation. Apparently, it's a bit like a geisha house: if you know someone who knows someone, you have a chance to get in. This fosters a very small black book's worth of clients - and obviously limits it to the ultra-wealthy or to those with a desperate need of being seen.
As you'd expect of a horror-comedy with a very serrated edge, there's plenty of odd shit right off the bat and the menu only gets spicier once Slowik introduces one of the courses, titled The Mess, by asking of one of his maîtres de partie that they shoot themselves in the mouth in full view of the paying customers.
You laugh because everyone plays it off, predictably. They all think it's part of some sort of act - Murder Mystery on the house, except the victim is the culprit and everyone knows about it - but then the staff makes it clear that everyone is going to die, tonight.
Diners and staff included.
As this is The Menu, a tale of bloody vengeance on a Molecular Cuisine-sourced mix of absolutely luscious Food Porn, served as cold as biting cynicism demands.
A few courses in, I'm reminded of Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover, its similar piles of food and the way the lavishness of the setting reflects the odiousness of those involved. There's no gangster styling themselves as a gourmand in sight, though, no Albert Spica expies to torture. Instead, each table gets its own just desserts, pun intended, and the wider assembly gets a few darkly-amusing digs at the cruelty of the fine dining experience in its own right.
The amuse-bouche, for instance, is a plate of oils and infused creams, obviously intended to serve as dippings or garnishings for bread - but no bread is ever provided. Instead, the guests have access to a little paper in the same plate, on which is stated that the bread they will not be eating will be sourced from and served to a struggling community's food bank. We never see the more deserving bread-havers, but just knowing that somewhere out there is someone who might be having the best baguette of their lives while these caricatures of Upper Crust asshats have to dab little wood spoons in tarragon oil and pretend to like it is brilliant.
Suffice it to say, things go progressively to thematically-appropriate levels of shit and the movie delights in torturing everyone between has-been movie stars begging for scraps to Wall Street finance bros glad-handing one another for "crushing it at work" while their personal lives implode. It's gleeful like I haven't seen a horror movie be in several years, and extremely self-aware in its own tone, like an actor who's told to act all snooty and snobbish but who then lets it slip that they're entirely aware of the clownishness of it all.
A few tropes are on offer, I won't say which ones, and their placement is predictable, but the pacing is perfect. You see everything coming a mile a minute, but this is Grand Guignol-grade, in the sense that you'll delight in seeing it all coming. Unlike the chefs featured, who give their lives to Art in the very literal sense, the movie very clearly has fun in setting up its own stakes, in deconstructing its own recipe and serving you a final payoff that, like its two last dishes, are the epitome of comfort foods.
Suffice it to say, Walter loved The Menu and is now combing the Web for an exact listing of the dishes created, associated recipes - and if it's possible to whip up variations on them on a tighter budget.
I mean, all three of us are foodies, sure, but pine nuts are beyond prohibitive and truffle oil is better off being seen as something you make last over several years, like that one perfume bottle you splurged on six years ago and that your S.O. insists on using sparingly.
Unless you're rich, that is, in which case you can probably bathe in the stuff if you'd care - but you know what we say about the rich while at the table, right? Wink-wink and whatnot...
