It's been a bit but I wanted to share another artist who's work I found while doing research for my job; her name is Michelle Stoney, she's Gitxsan (The nation right next to me) and she has some amazing artwork!!
She's got quite a few social media platforms, so I'm going to link her website and etsy shop!
She's got a huge variety of work and art pieces, including metal jewelry, clothing, paintings, drums, murals, and more!! She's even made a formline design of a unicorn, how cool is that? Go check out her work and follow her on her social media pages, her work is amazing!
Wanna purchase some beadwork? Live in Canada but have conflicting feelings about it's history and want to support the Indigenous people that live here? Do you just feel fed up with Canada Day nonsense?
Here are some beadwork artists in MY neighborhood that you should check out!
C'eldzïn Beadwork! I've bought her work before (the bisexual earrings) and she was kind enough to change said earrings to clip-ons for me! Her work is gorgeous and I highly recommend it!
Small Town Earrings!! They have very cute beadwork pieces, including some Pokemon and LOZ themed ones!!! I highly recommend their work as well!
Strong Blood Creations!! They're a trio of Indigenous women that create and distribute beadwork; I bought a hair clip from them recently that was absolutely gorgeous!!
Carmen Redunante! She's a Nisga'a/Chilean artist who sells absolutely gorgeous beadwork as well as other jewelry, prints, and and tapestry!!
More artists may be added later!!
This post was brought to you by: an almost exact same thread I did on twitter that I posted right as the entire site imploded so I decided to share the artists here so that they'd actually get traction! Twitter sucks
#indigenous art#native art#indigenous artist#gitxsan artist#formline art#I'm always really excited to boost the work of someone from home/neighboring nation!!! I've got a few gitxsan family members#(which is inevitable bc the two nations are basically neighbors and have been on good terms for decades)#so I'm really happy to share her work!!! I've seen her work around town too!!!

╰┈➤ ❝ [Gwendolyn "Gwen(die)" Summertree] ❞
⚡︎⚡︎ She/They ⚡︎⚡︎ 22 ⚡︎⚡︎ Aries ⚡︎⚡︎
Veterinarian & Ranching Student
Caretaker of The Mirror
"Work hard and feel good about it!"
༻༺┅━━━━━━┅୨୧┅━━━━━━┅༻༺
Gwendolyn Summertree, commonly referred to as Gwen or Gwendie, is a veterinary student at Casus College of International Arts, and runs a sanctuary and petting zoo on her aunts property.
╰┈➤[≈] Description
What is Gwen Summertree's physical appearance?
Gwen is 5 feet 4 inches, or 162.56 centimeters. Her skin is a light tan with very warm undertone, sunburns on her nose and cheeks. Her hair is thick, wavy, and layered with a lot of frizz and whisps. She has a curvy and muscley build, accentuated by her work in the fields. She has a normal skin type, decorated with dark brown freckles all over her forehead, cheeks, and nose. She has fractal scarring on her face over her right eye, left of her chin, and over her lip. The scarring goes down her right shoulder, curves mid back down her left hip, and all the way to the heel of her left foot. She has stretchmarks over her stomach from her pregnancy, and a cesarean scar along the underside of her belly. Prior to entering the Mirror World, her original hair colour was brown, bleached as light as it could go. Her eyes were also brown, but lost pigment due being struck by lightning, turning them a bright blue. After entering the Mirror World, her bangs took on a bright yellow. The pupils of her eyes became dark blue lightning bolts (⚡︎), referencing her power and past experience.
What is Gwen Summertree's background and history?
Gwen was born in Hiawatha Native Reserve, Ontario, moving to Toronto at a very young age when her father got a job working for the Government of Canada. All she knows is city life - concrete, big buildings, and smog are what truly remind her of home. Growing up she was a dedicated horse girl, looking at any media that involved horses and ponies. She dreamed of living in the countryside and owning farm animals, being a cowpoke just like the people in her favourite TV shows.` In high school she was a cheerleader and part of the student body, being very popular among her peers. She met her husband, Zenibaa, in school, being high school sweethearts throughout its entirety. Immediately after graduation they eloped and had a child, being a sickeningly sweet couple. After visiting some family in Hiawatha, an accident occurred on the way to Toronto, causing the passing of her husband. The trauma was excruciating on Gwen, and to get away from the memories and help her daughter grow up somewhere with nature they moved to Casus on a whim, knowing distant family lived there. Now she lives on a beautiful ranch taking care of her aunts horses and farm animals, raises her daughter, and trying to make the best of what she has.
Who is Gwen Summertree related to? Who is her family?
Gwen lives with her aunts, Andréa Laliberte and Biskane Summertree. The Summertree family has lived in British Columbia for generations, being indigenous to the area. A branch of Summertree's moved to Ontario about a hundred years ago, creating a blended indigenous family of Anishinaabe and Gitxsan peoples. She had never been to Casus, but is connected there very distantly. Her late husband was Zenibaa Cardinal, her high school sweetheart and love of her life until his untimely passing at the age of 20. Gwen also has a daughter named Judith-Namid, a three year old girl who is surprisingly stoic for her age.
What sort of activities does Gwendolyn Summertree like?
Gwen loves to party, finding a lot of her joy on the dancefloor. She isn't too focused on the inebration aspect of partying, mostly looking for excuses to show off her moves and outfits. These days she doesn't go out much, preferring to stay at home with her family and animals. She also likes to volunteer her time at organizations and nonprofits, making the lives of others better and more comfortable. Thought she isn't too good at it, she picked up the banjo as a way to pass the time and finds a lot of enjoyment in playing for her friends. When all her work on the ranch is done, she rides her horse Thistle around the town and surprising businesses or restaurants by arriving on horseback. Being around animals makes her the most comfortable, so she tends to sit with them in the stables or fields.
What kind of traits, ticks, or behaviours does Gwen Summertree exhibit?
Gwen is a tough, selfless, and sweet woman, always putting community first. She will always put herself in front of issues to try and soften the blow for anyone involved, even if it hurts her dearly. She takes on so many duties and responsibilities to try and make up for the failures of her past, in a way helping the community as a form of punishment. As fun and jovial as she is, she takes doing a good job very seriously. If there is a task, she will complete it and do it as perfectly as possible to make sure things run smoothly.
What does Gwen Summertree want? What prevents her from achieving that goal?
Gwen wants peace, to live for herself and her family. Moving to the country helped a little bit and having a way to save people in The Mirror World gave her a sense of purpose. The thing that stops her the most is her own trauma regarding her late husband. Every day, she fears hurting her loved ones, or not being there to support them. If she is gone just one day to take care of herself, how will she know if everyone else is okay? The fear of not being perfect paralyzes her.
How does Gwen Summertree interact with her surroundings?
Gwen is always respectful of other peoples spaces and items, but has the tendency to be stronger than she thinks - this could mean bumping into someone and knocking them to the ground, or going to pick up a heavy box and easily slinging it over her shoulder. She sees beauty and life in every little object and person in the world, trying to see good in everything to keep her spirits up. She pets every willing animal she meets, cleans up other peoples messes, and volunteers her time to those in need. Sometimes her kindness is to a fault, often neglecting herself in order to support everyone else around her, even if it accidentally hurts her.
What do outsiders think of Gwen Summertree? How does she treat them?
Everyone in Casus knows Gwen is an absolute sweetheart, always helping her neighbours and local community. Cheap entries to the petting zoo, bringing food and materials to new residents of the town, and acting as an unofficial guide to the Casus History Museum - where her aunt Andréa works - she is the number one source of support in the whole valley. Despite her positivity, members of the Church of Doluit Deam do not appreciate the work she does, often seeing her as 'radical' and 'unruly', claiming the museum spreads misinformation and she is a perpetrator. There has been a lot of tension between the Summertree Family and those who practice Doluitism, and when Gwen moved to Casus, she was caught in the crossfire.
What do Gwen Summertree's friends think of her? How does she treat them?
Yhat: "What an absolute fucking gem! She has got to be the strongest person I know. She sacrifices so much to make sure her family and friends are safe, I wish I had an ounce of care she has. I'm lucky to have her as my best friend. Not only is she helpful, but damn does she know how to party! Surprises me every day that Judith is her daughter - she barely cracks a smile, while Gwen is all smiles!"
Archie: "Strong, loyal, fierce, amazing, beautiful... what isn't she? She is the person you go to for advice, to have a shoulder to cry on, to share stories and secrets. And the way she treats kids and animals; it's so obvious she pours her heart and soul into ensuring their happiness and comfort. I wonder if one day someone can do the same for her...maybe I could...? Nah, no way,"
Donnie: "Honestly, I don't know much about her. She is best friends with Yhat, so I see her often and we talk a little outside of acting as Protectors. She seems really nice and I'm happy to connect with her, but it kind of feels like she tries way too hard to make people happy? Does she really need my approval? Oh... that sounds so mean... forget I said anything,"
Dusk: "She is a great friend to have. In this little town it's hard to find someone who cares about health and protecting the public as I do, so we really mesh well both in the Mirror World and daily life. She doesn't work out like I do, but she can for sure rival me in an arm wrestling contest. All the hay bales she throws, the buckets and boxes she moves, the running around she does - she might end up stronger than me! If she joined me at the gym more..."
Quill: 🤠🐴💃
╰┈➤[🖑] Identity
Gwen Summertree is Anishinaabeg, her father being Odawa Anishinaabeg and her mother being Mississaugas Anishinaabeg with distant Gitxsan heritage. She lives off-reserve with her aunts Biskane Summertree and Andréa Laliberte in Casus Vallis, British Columbia.
Gwen Summertree is a bisexual, cisgender demigirl.

╰┈➤[☀] Powers
How does Gwen Summertree's power manifest?
Upon tapping into the Mirror World, Gwen Summertree discovered her powers of Electricity, Shocks, and Lightning. This power likely stems from the incident involving her late husband several years ago, in which she was electrocuted during a storm.
How did Gwen Summertree discover the Mirror World?
Gwen discovered the Mirror World after her friend, Yhat, asked to show her something. They both went to explore, but Gwen got stuck because she did not read the Casus Vallis Historia. Yhat then had to save her and discovers without reading the book, everyone is trapped. Neither of them realized just how dangerous the Mirror World was until that moment.
What influences Gwen Summertree to protect the public and go through The Mirror World?
Keeping her family safe and away from dangers is and always will be her main goal. There are a lot of people who go missing in Casus, and now that she knows most end up in The Mirror World, she vows to close it off and prevent any more suffering. In a way, going to The Mirror World is an act of redemption and punishment for Gwen, since she feels responsible for her late husbands passing.

I deal with anxiety, ADHD and a few more. So normally I’m mature, chill and just vibing. Once I get comfortable and/or friends with someone my ADHD shows, then I’ll be more open and hyper.
I’m also very spiritual. Also I’m very openminded & hearted, I just let people do their own thing but also love learning and/or being open to others beliefs/opinions and everything.
I’m also very emotional, caring and supportive with being an sympath & empath, which is a blessing and a curse. I like being on my own but when someone needs support or someone, I’m always willing to help.

Minor schools around the world: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,Runescorn Academy of Magic
Runscorn Academy of magic lies within a cluster of rural homes on the outskirts of Edmonton. The homes, which are in reality the dorms and homes of both staff and students, circle the school itself, which appears as a 1980-built home. They accept students from all across Canada+Alaska with a set limit of 4005 per year. They are currently the only known minor school to accept both humans and vampire children. It is a boarding-only school. The school has a total of 8 floors. The top 2 floors are on the surface, while the bottom 6 floors map the underground of the rural area. There are two fields (One surrounded by a church facsimile to hide the Quidditch/Quodpot players), a playset, and a outdoor rink. Like most European schools, students in North America are also accepted upon the age of 11 (Grade 6), but graduate upon 18 (Grade 12), whereas Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and others graduate upon 17. The Principle as of 2010 is Mr. Laughvin Bedroit, a former Halfblooded vampire alumni of Runescorn (Scrollreader) -------------------------
Classes offered are: (Mandatory): French, DADA, Transfiguration, Math, Science/Potions, Charms, History (Electives): Alchemy, Runes, Music, Fine arts, Debate, Astronomy
The set uniform for males is: Vest, Runescorn robes (Runescorn jacket in the winter), white dress shirt, and jeans The set uniform for females is: vest, Runescorn robes (Runescorn jacket in the winter), white dress shirt, and black skirt (optional to wear jeans)
Students are sent a letter through both magical and muggle means (depends on the student), and there are five houses that students may pick from; Halo: Students here are known for their bright, sunny, and accepting personalities. They average of about 15 new students per year, and many are Native Americans from Alberta, such as those from the Blackfoot confederacy. Their dorms are on the 1st floor, a sharp right from the Grade 6 French classroom, and have large windows to let the sun in. Many graduates in Herbology are usually from here. Their colours are white and yellow; their symbol is a simple white ring against a yellow background. The students are known as “Angels”, and have good relations with the Shamans.
Crowfoot: Named after the Siksika chief, this house also has a high amount of First Nations children. The students here are known for being among the best fighters in Alberta, often climbing quickly on the ranks on both Canadian and American wizarding duels. The current female house prefect, 11th grader One Who Sings (Rough translation), is the leader of the dueling club at Runescorn. Students here graduate with high degrees in DADA and Transfiguration. The dorms are on the 7th floor, next to the dueling floor and favour woven carpets made of Wendigo hide. Their colours are brown and green; their symbol is a sword crossed with a leafy tree branch against a brown background. The students are known as “Chiefs”, and have good relations with the Sailors.
Scrollreader: As you can probably tell from the name, the students here are smart, quick-witted, and cunning. Although not particularly known for studying, they are rumoured to hold the secret to Technomagic (A form of magic by carving runes and creating specific wards for technology to work). Only loyal Scrollreaders may know the secret and they cannot use it outside of the dorms. There is a severe penalty for exposing the secret (nobody knows what it is- that should say it all). Their dorms are also on the 7th floor, almost outside of the rural area, and encompasses the majority of the top floor of the library. Their colours are grey and dark blue; their symbol is a scroll against a blue background. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 70% of all Vampires chose this house. The students are known as “Scrollreaders”
Shaman: Also probably obvious. In this house, older students teach the youngers about the popular form of healing magic that is only taught in Canada (A mixture of Gitxsan healing practices and traditional ritual magic). Many of them are from B.C First Nations tribes. The school nurse, Mary Housen, was from this house, and as such, it has gained the popular nickname, “House of Healing”. Their dorms are on the 1st floor, next to the Halo dorms. Their colours are yellow and a deep red; their symbol is a Gitxsan frog jumping over a healing rune. The students are known as “Shamans”, and have good relations with the Angels.
Wendat: More then a tribute then anything else, the students here tend to be incredibly athletic and make up most of the sports teams at Runescorn. Despite this, they are incredible loyal to their closest House, the Chiefs, as well as the Shamans, who take the time to heal the 101 injuries the house tends to get, and don’t take too kindly to bias (There was an incident in 1970 that resulted in a pureblooded Sailor getting thrown out by his own house due to his continued use the word “Mudblood”). Their dorms are across from the Crowfoot dorms and also favour woven carpets made of Wendigo hide. Their colours are black and light blue; their symbol is a mohawk with a hockey stick in the background. The students are known as “Sailors” (A reference to where the Wendat lived), and get along well with the Chiefs.
------------
Students wake up each weekday at 6:15 by a prescribed bell (7:30 on weekends), and breakfast is served until 7:45. Students then spend until 8:30 cleaning up the school and tending to the gardens for Herbology, and go to classes at 8:45.
Lunch is served at 12:00 until 1:00, and classes end at 3:34. Dinner is served at 7:30, but Grades 10-12 have mandatory study hall at 7:45 until 8:50 (practices and games exempt). Lights out is at 9pm for Grades 6-9, and at 10:30 for Grades 10-12. Astronomy students will go to bed at 2:15 with the help of a sleeping drought.
During weekends students may Portkey to Rosethorn Avenue, in Medicine Hat (Alberta’s version of Diagon Alley).
School starts on September 6th, winter break starts on December 17th (ends January 6th, or the day after that), and summer break starts June 15th. Students may stay over the break within reason.
Following the Albertan curriculum, Grade 6′s take their PWAT’s at the end of the year (PAT’s but wizardized), and Grade 12′s take their diploma’s around the same time. Graduation for Grades 9 and 12 will happen in a small ceremony at the end of the year.

I read a small stack of HighWater Press picture books, so I figured I'd post them together. @highwaterpress is absolutely a go to publisher for me, and I have nothing but good things to say about any of the books I've read from them (and I've read many of their books thanks to the well stocked selection at my local public library). We Dream Medicine Dreams by Lisa Boivin is a beautifully illustrated and told story of family, culture, grief, and the ways those things mingle. Anyone who has ever lost someone important to them, especially a parent or grandparent, will find something in this story to treasure. Recommended for sure. Jigging for Halibut with Tsinii by Sara Florence Davidson and Robert Davidson, illustrated by Janine Gibbons, is a gorgeously illustrated work that follows a grandfather and grandson fishing for their dinner, and not for the first time. It shows the familial and cultural ties that bind, even when generational and language differences stand in the way. Definitely recommended. The Wolf Mother by Hetxw'ms Gyetxw (Brett D. Huson), illustrated by Natasha Donovan, is a fantastic continuation of the Mothers of Xsan series. We learn lots of interesting information about wolves, as well as about Gitxsan traditions. I'm a huge fan of Donovan's art in general, and loved her work here. I read this one with my four year old niece, who was a big fan of the art in general, learning about wolves, and seeing a family in the pictures. The series is an indispensable resource. Angela Sterritt, a Gitxsan journalist and author living in Skwxwú7mesh (Vancouver), has also done a thread on this which includes pointers to some further reading on the subject.

(I also just recommend following her in general, she is a vital voice in mainstream journalism on issues affecting Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest).
Im continuing to scream into a void but like does holtby realize there are Indigenous artists MANY of them in the community he just moved to? does he know there are PLENTY of Indigenous artists he couldve commissioned in DC for his mask there or does he only care abt Native art that settlers can attempt to replicate?

March 24 - April 3, 2017 Re-Forming Annual Aboriginal Student Exhibition Concourse Gallery, Emily Carr University
Re-Forming desires to play on the word “form” as an aesthetic critique of a creative work while proposing a reformulation of fixed understandings of aesthetic as it relates to Indigenous artists + subject matter. As a suggestive device, this title asks the viewer to deepen their consideration of “what it means to be an Indigenous artist” versus “what it means to make art of Indigenous subject matter” + to thoughtfully re-form initial, predetermined perspectives into something more generative + open. The process of re-forming as a practice in itself encourages an enriched critical engagement with the subtleties + nuances that exist for Indigenous artists + their creative practices. We want to highlight how Indigenous people are engaging with the reformation of culture, languages, politics + creative aesthetic + how that reformation allows a necessary shift in the relationships that our audiences have with us, our art + each other in the context of contemporary art.
