#Global Perspectives
Text
hello there! we are a group of italian high school students and have made a form as part of a end-of-the-year global perspectives school project, and this is our way of sharing it around for people to answer! this survey is about the discrimination of people of colour in the usa's medical and healthcare system. as such, the survey's target demographic is people of colour that live / have lived in the usa. our aim is to later create a website to share our findings, which we will hopefully also share on here (if we remember to / if our exams don't have the best of us).
the survey shouldn't take too long as most of the questions are multiple choice!
the form does touch on issues of systemic racism / racism in general and medical malpractice, so be careful if mentions of this trigger you!

“We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. I’m tired of this shit. I’m tired of f-ing Earth Day. I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is that there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me. The planet has been through a lot worse than us. ...

I’ve been meaning to make a post like this for a while, so here are some fiction anti-colonial/anti-apartheid/anti-genocide books that I read for the cultural studies concentration of my literature degree, that I think are super readable/accessible and don’t see recommended often:
1. The Association of Small Bombs by Karan Mahajan
Tumblr media
A novel about a boy who was a victim of a terrorist attack as a child and how he becomes radicalized by the same terrorist group that killed his friends as a young adult.
Additional/background reading:
youtube
2. The Story of a Brief Marriage by Anuk Arudpragasam
Tumblr media
a 24 hour snapshot of the last few weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war where the Sri Lankan goverment bombed a no fire zone, killing as many as 70,000 civilians, the vast majority of whom belonged to the Tamil ethnic minority. (this book is extremely graphic but very worth reading imo)
Background/additional reading:
3. White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Tumblr media
A post-colonial novel spanning several decades centering on two WWII veterans living in Britain; one a white Englishman, one a Bangladeshi immigrant.
additional/background reading:
4. An Imperfect Blessing by Nadia Davis
Tumblr media
A novel about the Indian community in South Africa, told primarily through the lens of a teenage girl and taking place during the dissolution of the apartheid state.
background/additional reading:
5. Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie
Tumblr media
A modern retelling of Antigone set in post-9/11 Britain and Pakistan.
additional/background reading:

I keep thinking about this french philosopher who reframed the climate crisis in terms of a global refugee crisis – everyone will become displaced eventually, either because of ecological disaster or political collapse or because a great number of people suddenly want to live on your front lawn where nature is still survivable, and everything that has been happening in politics / economy / culture for the past decade has been happening in reaction to that existential dread. We are at a point where the ground has been giving way for some time and now the horizon is getting darker, too. Everyone is scrambling in slow-motion to find something to hold on to but we will all have to profoundly change in the long run. We WILL lose our homes. We WILL lose the future promised to us as children. All we can do is try to gain something in return. Those who survive will be buried in a very different world than the one they were born into. Idk I don't even mean this in a pessimistic way but I've been reading Octavia Butler and I think she was right. What are we willing to give for survival? How do we pay the rent? How do we accommodate the Other, and what will be left afterwards of the original us? Are you preparing to live in a world made new?

opinions?
I mean I definitely think it's worth it to sign petitions for these causes, because it's a fairly easy way to demonstrate to the federal government where the Australian people stand on these issues. and like. a lot of politicians are much more likely to respect these traditional forms of political participation more than anything that happens on social media
that being said, it's definitely not the be all and end all with regards to communicating to politicians about Palestine. it's also important to call representatives or send an email or a letter! it's also important to go to protests! political movements are multifaceted things, and the more ways we talk about Palestine, the harder it is for it to be ignored. if your local member holds office hours or town halls, you can also go along to those and talk to them in person if you're able to
that being said, I also encourage people to stay on top of Australia's other actions with regards to foreign policy, beyond just in Palestine. Australia is a major colonial power in Asia and the Pacific, and it's important that we resist against our involvement in colonial projects that have led to the displacement of First Peoples around the globe. I think it's particularly important that Australians, as citizens of a major settler-colony make sure we're well-versed on anticolonialism anti-colonial projects
