I'm a big fan of extensive reading apps for language learning, and even collaborated on such an app some 10 years ago. It eventually had to be shut down, sadly enough.
Right now, the biggest one in the market is the paywalled LingQ, which is pretty good, but well, requires money.
There's also the OG programs, LWT (Learning With Texts) and FLTR (Foreign Language Text Reader), which are so cumbersome to set up and use that I'm not going to bother with them.
I presently use Vocab Tracker as my daily driver, but I took a spin around GitHub to see what fresh new stuff is being developed. Here's an overview of what I found, as well as VT itself.
(There were a few more, like Aprelendo and TextLingo, which did not have end-user-friendly installations, so I'm not counting them).
Vocab Tracker
Tumblr media
++ Available on web ++ 1-5 word-marking hotkeys and instant meanings makes using it a breeze ++ Supports websites
-- Default meaning/translation is not always reliable -- No custom languages -- Ugliest interface by far -- Does not always recognise user-selected phrases -- Virtually unusable on mobile -- Most likely no longer maintained/developed
Lute
Tumblr media
++ Supports virtually all languages (custom language support), including Hindi and Sanskrit ++ Per-language, customisable dictionary settings ++ Excellent, customisable hotkey support
-- No instant meaning look-up makes it cumbersome to use, as you have to load an external dictionary for each word -- Docker installation
LinguaCafe
Tumblr media
++ Instant meanings thanks to pre-loaded dictionaries ++ Supports ebooks, YouTube, subtitles, and websites ++ Customisable fonts ++ Best interface of the bunch
== Has 7 word learning levels, which may be too many for some
-- Hotkeys are not customisable (yet) and existing ones are a bit cumbersome (0 for known, for eg.) -- No online dictionary look-up other than DeepL, which requires an API key (not an intuitive process) -- No custom languages -- Supports a maximum of 15,000 characters per "chapter", making organising longer texts cumbersome -- Docker installation
Dzelda
Tumblr media
++ Supports pdf and epub ++ Available on web
-- Requires confirming meaning for each word to mark that word, making it less efficient to read through -- No custom languages, supports only some Latin-script languages -- No user-customisable dictionaries (has a Google Form to suggest more dictionaries)

I know a lot of people on qsmpblr use Tumblr mobile, but if you do use browser Tumblr then I would recommend the Simple Translate extension. Because Tumblr doesn't have built in translation like Twitter, there's less fans posting in their native language, instead most people just use English.
Simple Translate is an extension that allows you to translate text that you highlight into a target language. (It uses Google Translate API, but so does Twitter so the translation quality is pretty much the same).
Firefox Extension | Chrome Extension
Tumblr media
When you highlight text in another language, a translate icon appears, when you click on it a panel containing the translation of the text appears.
Tumblr media
You can also change the settings of the extension so that the translation panel automatically appears when you highlight text in another language.
Tumblr media
Here's some more examples using the official QSMP Twitter accounts, you do not need to change the settings of the extension to translate from different languages into your target language.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(All of these match the translations given when using the "translate bio" button on Twitter directly.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can also access a translation box using the icon in the toolbar, any text you enter can be translated to the language selected in the drop-down menu (meaning you don't need to open a new tab to use Google Translate).
Some settings explanation and other stuff under the cut. Not super important but I figured I'd add it anyways.
Tumblr media
There is an option to use DeepL API as opposed to Google Translate (it's another translation tool, there is free access to the API with a limit of 500,000 characters/month, and a pro version for unlimited access).
Whatever the target language is set as is what text you highlight will be translated into. There is another option for a second target language, I'll explain that further down.
Tumblr media
This option changes how you view the translation panel, the first option (default) has the icon appear when you highlight text (as seen in the first image of the post), the second option has the translation panel appear automatically when you highlight text, and the for third option the panel and icon won't automatically appear, but can still be accessed by right-clicking the highlighted text and selecting "translate selected text".
The checkbox below these options means that if the text you're highlighting is already in your target language, the translation icon and panel will not appear, it can again still be accessed by right-clicking what you've highlighted and selecting translate.
Tumblr media
This option appears twice, in both the Web-page section (for translating selected text) and the Toolbar Popup section (for the translation box in the toolbar popup).
The web page option, when toggled on, means that when you select text that is in your target language, the translation panel will translate into the second target language that has been selected. If the checkbox for "do not display if translation is not required" is toggled on, you can only view the translation from Target -> 2nd Target by right-clicking to translate selected text.
The toolbar popup version of this option is used to automatically switch the language in the toolbar translation box when you input something in your main target. (ie. second target set to French means that when you input English text in the translation box it will switch the translation setting from "(detect language) -> English" to "English -> French").
There are also settings to change the style and size of the translation button and panel.
Side note: Mixed language messages (not containing your target language) will only translate one of the languages, you can work around this by highlighting the different languages separately.
Links again if you don't want to scroll all the way back up

okay because some people are apparently confused about how qsmp translations work
quackity pays for everything translated by the qsmp translation mod, which is a minecraft mod that works on the qsmp minecraft server in minecraft on that specific minecraft server and not anywhere else
however, sometimes streamers say things in settings that are not specifically the qsmp minecraft server that they still want translated into a different language
in this case, there are a range of other plugin options available, which the streamer pays for themself. they all have their ups and downs.
aypierre, a qsmp member, inspired by the qsmp and in order to connect better with his non-french qsmp audience, made a plugin of his own with the help of his community which any streamer can purchase and use. it's a genuinely awesome plugin that works very well and has a lot of options and is also a lot cheaper than anything else on the market because he is not doing it for profit and is only charging as much as google api (who are the ones actually doing the translations for both qsmp and aypierre) are charging him to translate
most qsmp streamers have this plugin installed for when they're playing games that aren't qsmp because it was invented by a qsmp streamer. it's also slowly spreading outside of the qsmp space. it's also useful for when you have your mic muted in game. depending on their preference and how tight their budget is, a streamer might also leave this on while they're playing qsmp because they don't feel like dealing with turning it on and off all the time
the qsmp translator and aypierre translator both ahve their pros and cons. the big con of the qsmp translator is that it only works on one minecraft server. the big pro is that you only have to pay for it if you're quackity. the big pro of the aypierre server is that it works for you everywhere, but it only translates what comes into your mic, so it doesn't work to facilitate conversations with people speaking other languages and it's really more a tool for the audience.
while bad is playing alone on the qsmp, he's choosing to rely on the pierre translator instead of the qsmp translator to help save quackity some money where he can. however, if he's on the qsmp, he always has the option to have everything he says with his in-game mic on translated without him having to pay a penny for it.

LIST: iOS SHORTCUTS
• Spotify to MP3 | "Download Spotify tracks to MP3." • All Media Downloader | "This shortcut helps you download content from social media apps." • Web Services | "Customise the internet for you." • Better GIF Maker | "Convert videos and live photos to GIFs at highest quality using ffmpeg" • Water Eject | "Powerful water ejection system." • Paywall and Cookie Bypass | "Bypass website paywalls and cookies." • iUtilities | "The only shortcut you’ll need" • Reverse Image Search | "Search by image instead of keywords" • Google Translate | "Quickly translate using the Google Translate API" • iTweak Final Version | "A Jailbreak Alternative With Multiple Features!"
...WHAT ARE SHORTCUTS?
for those unaware: the pre-installed Shortcuts app on iOS/macOS/iPadOS can potentially be a life-changing application in regards to digital productivity.
it's utilized as a hub for your collection of shortcuts and automations. shortcuts allow for just a single click—which many times is conveniently incorporated onto your "share" sheet option panel—to execute one or multiple actions; automations are chosen commands that run at specific/relative times of day without prompt.
people tend to overlook the Shortcuts app due to its available "gallery" of shortcuts being rather limited... with the only other option provided being to build these desired actions yourself, which requires the skill of digital coding. however! that's where RoutineHub comes in: it's a website allowing users to share their own complex shortcuts, free of charge, and has a large selection to choose from.

also like why is he selling this thing as if it's one of a kind
translators have existed for years. it was like a main selling point for google back in 2016 with the pixel phones. this isn't unique. it's not new technology. it's just a voice translator with subtitles
and it's new and untrained so it's probably ass ? unless he's just ripping google api. which then. he just made a gui for an existing translator that already had a gui
THIS ISN'T A NEW THING HE'S JUST LYING 😭😭😭

I don't mean to be rude and I completely agree. Cellbit has indeed had subtitles for awhile but as a person who only speaks english but is learning portuguese, the subtitlea are great when they work which most of the time they didnt lol. This could only be a me problem but most of the time they just didnt function properly. Sometimes I would have to wait for like 20 minutes for them to start working, most times they wouldnt work at all, or it would only pick up like 1 or 2 words in every sentence which really doesnt help much.  so I'm really hoping quackity's works better. But yes keep learning languages. I continued to watch when the subtitlea didnt work. I am having a ton of fun learning portuguese 👍 👍 👍
i think you may have just had a technical issue, as the translated captions worked pretty well for me when i used them, particularly pierre's. i will say that they require manually turning them on at the start of stream, and sometimes cellbit would forget for a bit until reminded, but that's not the fault of the captions themselves nor do i blame him considering most of his audience has been and continues to be portuguese speakers and a memory slip is not anyone's fault. i'm not really sure why you had so many issues with it, although i'm sorry to hear that.
in terms of q's translator, if it runs off the same software and api that they were previously using for the qlobal translator, i doubt it will work any better in terms of translation than pierre's, although i've seen some folks speculating it will involve different api (kind of doubtful, to me, as from my admittedly limited technical understanding, they used google and amazon api previously because those have the best LLMs for translation services, and even if they made their own api, they would likely still need to use google translate's LLM/language corpus). it will be nice, regardless, that it'll work for all audio and not just the audio routed through the individual streamer's mic.

Semoga Allah angkat rasa nyerinya.. aamiin aamiin!!
-h.a.

Kinda fucked up that the best input method I can find for drawing Japanese characters is to open Google Translate in a web browser and then copy the characters from there into a text editor.
But also very cool that the state of the art is "touchscreen on Linux works with HTML5 Canvas APIs in Firefox to allow fingerpainting, and Google Translate can convert that to Unicode".
It works, without much thought.

I was about to ask if google translate randomly suddenly became a million times worse (It was translating something that I'd seen it translate before in a completely different way that was also completely incoherent nonsense) but then when I actually opened the site in a tab and copy pasted what I was trying to look at instead of just using the browser extension I normally do, the translation was fine there...but the extension i use DOES use google translate (I was so confused I checked to make sure).....So did they just randomly break its API somehow...???

ATTENTION COUNCIL.
@laurencezvahlslefteyebrow @xerith-42 @gonedreaminggg
i just read eyebrow’s post on renaming the Shadow Knight Rebellion to the “Blue Flame” or “Blue Flame Rebellion”. and it got me thinking. like really going crazy type of thinking
this begins with me searching up what the scientific name for the “blue part” of fire. and i got this:
Tumblr media
okay. so. (i’m tweaking) SULFUR. burning SULFUR.
ya know how sulfur is typically associated with demonic presence? yeah? okay. think about that for a second.
biblically (woo. religious metaphor!) that sulfur, which was also referred to as brimstone, is associated with a fiery hell or underworld.
if i remember correctly from other posts, shad imprisoned xavier. wouldn’t it make sense then if xavier was first portrayed by shad’s manipulation to everyone as something to fear? something demonic even? despite that he was the one doing all the evil?
that blue sulfur fire came to represent demonic force, until it was reclaimed by xavier when he escaped. now it stands as a symbol for power against shad. funny how tables turn.
that is why having blue flames gains you immense respect in the rebellion—symbolizing overcoming shad’s control.
also i think due to my google search that it would be cool for the rebellion to formally be called Api Biru, and informally they are referred to as the Blue Flame.
technically “Api Biru” translates to “blue lava”; which also has me wondering: if and once shad were to be defeated, would the red, fiery hellscape of the Nether (shadow realm? underworld? whatev) turn blue? look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
imagine that.
anyway that’s all sorry for going absolutely wild

Everytime i hear news about POGOs feeling ko nag kaka justice na yung trauma na inabot ko nung 2019 Alam kong madami yung mawawalan ng trabaho but Filipinos deserve better.
- Most of the Chinese na nagwowork sa POGO are not using their real name pag pasok ng Pinas. Kaya takot na takot sila lumabas even sa mall kase baka ma question yung pagkatao nila. Kaya di na ko nagtaka kung pano nakalusot si Mayor Alice Guo. Some of them are using an English name.
- Uso kidnapping sa kanila and kapwa Chinese pa nila yung gumagawa nun kase wala naman silang bank account and puro lang sila cash pag sumasahod. 150k+ sahod nila kase once a month lang rd nila. Pero sahod na yun ng limang pinoy sa POGO.
- I won’t forget how disrespectful yung mga Chinese na kawork namin na lalaki. Most of them mas gustong babae yung partner ng Chinese on shift kase nakakapikon talaga yung ugali nila and prone sila sa away. Naranasan kong may nagsusuntukan sa harap ko while on shift. Very unprofessional. Mga bastos pa, they are sexualizing girls na kawork nila including us.
- Mostly na kinukuha nila is mga Chinese nationals na farmers, mga di nakapag aral, and laki sa hirap. Nothing wrong with being a farmer pero i would say na yung iba talaga sa kanila, wala talagang modo and halatang walang pinag aralan.
- Mapanakit sila. Nung naka gy shift ako that time may isang Chinese na trip talaga ko saktan. Habang naka break ako sa labas ng office dinaganan niya yung hita ko ng walang rason and sobrang nagpasa siya. Pinalagpas ko yun kase paborito yun ng boss. Take note na lalaki siya. There are times na bigla nya iuurong yung lamesa na kahoy minsan pag trip nya and babatuhin niya ko ng crumpled paper for no reason. He also used spoon sa balikat ko to call my attention habang kumakain ako ng lomi.
- Tatanggalin ka nila kapag may mistakes ka sa transaction. Puro pera from gambling yung need naming isend from diff banks and may isang Chinese dun na ang lala ng galit sakin. He mentioned thru google translate na malas daw ako. Shuta never ako nagka mistake sa transactions ko kase sobra akong nag iingat. Kalahating araw niya kong pinagmumura in Chinese dahil lang ako partner nya that day and hindi gumana yung pc nya.
- 12 hrs shift mo with 30 mins lunch. Literal na para kang OFW vibe pag andun ka. Yung feeling na alipin ka sa sarili mong bansa. Yung boss namin na Chinese nagagalit ng walang dahilan. Very unreasonable. Nahuli nya kong nagsasalamin and shuta sinigawan nya ko. Yung nag mentor naman sakin na babae, napuno na kase kumuha lang siya ng tissue sa box ang dami ng sinabi nung Chinese. Haha Pinakyuhan ni ate geraldine yung boss namin sabay Resign kinabukasan.
- Kung pera lang ang usapan I would say na eto yung pinaka madaling work na ginawa ko. Kase encoder kalang and same excel sheet lang gagamitin mo everyday. Pero wala siyang growth kase most of the time naka tunganga ka lang.
- I hate my experience in POGO given that 2 mos lang naman tinagal ko dahil gusto ko magpahinga sa BPO, mas ok na kong sigawan ng mga kano sa calls kesa maging alipin ng mga Chinese. Working environment there was awful for me. And inhumane. It was an eyeopener for me na wag magpa api sa sariling mong bansa.
- Some had good experiences with POGO, given that pumapantay at humihigit pa nga sa sahod ng mga bpo workers, pero sana hindi nila ma experience yung mga naexperience ko.
- There are still good Chinese na nakilala ako. Some of them kumapit na lang siguro sa ganitong trabaho to help their families in China. Sila lang yung mga pinagpepray ko na sana ok pa rin up until now.
PERO SATIN PA RIN ANG WEST PHILIPPINES SEA.
