He woke, saw himself in them, and took a large step back, regretting accepting them as his new team. In another world he was quite hands off, merely a watcher because it was so very painful to watch. He saw himself and all his mistakes in this new team of his.

In this world, Kakashi awoke, saw the similarities, and instantly panicked. He suddenly realized what he had done, passing a team. Kakashi was left scrambling not to repeat old mistakes and regrets. This team would not suffer the fate of his team.

In this world, simply put, Kakashi became a teacher. This is the starting of a new Team seven.

Button Up Your Overcoat by Skinner [E, Ed/Roy, 139k, Complete]

Ed could untie knots in the fifth and sixth dimensions -- blindfolded. He could convince the military he fell through a rabbit-hole, and he could even shut down a Drachman invasion (with a little help), but he can't seem to avoid dating Roy Mustang (and maybe is kind of okay with that). But here's hoping they can collar a General trying to trigger a three-way war, and that they can stop him before he destroys the world.

“Oh!” Jaskier said with a noisy explosion of air. “It never came up! I’m so sorry I never thought to ask you if you’d been summoned to another world before! I’ll add that to my ‘getting to know you’ rotation. Where did you grow up, what do you do for a living, hey! Have you ever been summoned to another world before?”

Geralt's muscles heave backwards, flinging him down against the bed. He tries to struggle upwards but it feels like he’s been buried beneath a mountain. Every inch of him is pressed completely still. His eyes close, and he’s left in the dark with nothing but his racing heart for company. He’s not tired, he’s never been less tired. But the curse wants him to sleep, it seems. It’ll force him to lie here until he does. How much of his life will it start to control, now that he’s declared war against it? Now that he knows it’s lurking in his bones, now that it doesn’t have to be subtle?

He swallows. Takes a long, deep breath, gathering every bit of courage he has to stop himself from slipping back into panic. He still has control over his lungs. He still has that.

For now.

(Or: Witchers don't retire. They stay on the Path until it kills them. They hunt monsters and they want nothing from life. This isn't exactly by choice.)

Untamed/MDZS

Wei Wuxian is staring up at the sky, thinking idly about the taste of Emperor’s Smile on his tongue, when Suibian jumps full force onto his stomach and cries, “A-Xian, don’t be mad!”

The sheer force of her pounce knocks the breath out of him. The resulting pause is just long enough for Jiang Cheng, who up to this point has been laying rather peacefully next to him, to shoot up and demand, “Oh great, what did you do now?”

To be fair, the question isn’t exactly unwarranted. Suibian looks an absolute mess: twigs stuck in her fur, dirt smeared across the white fluff of her underbelly. She’s panting up a storm, little heh heh heh gasps that haven’t edged into her normal high-pitched laughter. When her ears press back against her head, she could almost pass for pitiful.

“Bichen hates me.”

Wei Wuxian’s first thought is Why would Lan Zhan’s daemon hate you?, but it’s followed quickly by remembering exactly where he is, how little trouble he’s caused today, and the fact that he hasn’t seen Suibian for a few minutes.

A grin spreads across his face.

(Or: The most important name a cultivator will ever pick isn’t for their sword. It’s for their daemon.)

No night as deep as my night. by orange_crushed [E, Lan Zhan/Wei Ying, 17k, Complete]

Wangji shuts his eyes and rocks A-Yuan and thinks about Wei Ying, Wei Ying. The sound of his laugh; the rage in his eyes at any cruelty, no matter how small. Water running down his face, mixed with tears and mud in the rain. The smell of his sweat and his combing-oil when he stood too close in the cold spring. His face when he’d said, I’ll carry you, too many years ago. If there is anything left of him, Wangji will still love it. It’s not even a question.

When he opens his eyes all the candles in the room sputter at once, and go out.

And then they come back again, as easily as they were extinguished. Wangji looks up, to find a tall shadow in the doorway.

Wangji is not afraid.

“Wei Ying,” he says. “Come in.”

Aftermath by KouriArashi [T, Jiang Yanli/Jin Zixuan, 57k, Complete]

Jiang Yanli lifted her eyes up to Madam Jin and said, calmly, as if from a hundred miles away, “I am a daughter of the Yu sect. Did he think my mother only taught me how to pour tea?”

"You're honestly so cute," Ron interrupts, yet again, shaking his head. "So tiny. And so angry, all the time. It's adorable."

Alternatively Ron Weasley, Time Traveller Extraordinaire, is stuck in the same seven year Hogwarts Loop, repeating the same thing over and over again. Naturally, he's so done with everything.

Survival Curve by onepieceofharry [M, Draco/Harry, 30k, WIP]

Lucidity slammed into him like an offended hippogriff. He's shorter because he's younger. Pansy is shrill and sobbing at his hurt like she used to before Draco snapped their bond in a bid to keep her away. Snape is at his side where he should be at the head table, and Pomfrey is fussing where she should be killing.

He had known this only vaguely, where now he knew it true.

His head snapped up and he let himself stare into corpses.

Draco Malfoy goes back in time and promptly falls on his face.

When The Wolf Comes Home by roachpatrol [T, Gen(ish), 40k, WIP]

Through a dark ritual, Draco Malfoy is sent back in time, from his seventeenth year to his eleventh. Now he has the chance to use his superior knowledge and skill to change everything and save all his friends and family, but there's a terrible complication: it turns out that not even time travel can cure a case of lycanthropy.

King's Cross Station looks a little different, the second time.

So does the riverbank. So does Sirius, so do the dementors - Hell, even his patronus is different.

Sanguine. by jaemyun [E, Word of Honor, Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu, 122k, Complete]

Zhou Zishu is ready to be done with Tian Chuang. He's ready for his seventh nail, and ready to wander before facing his eighty one brothers with a bowed head in the afterlife. He will do this after, apparently, one last mission that's simply too intriguing to pass up.

The Ghost Valley has sent a letter past its borders, asking to attend the Heroes Conference of the Five Lakes Alliance. The Five Lakes Alliance, unbelievably, has accepted. Both no doubt have hidden intentions, and Prince Jin wants eyes and ears on the scene. Zhou Zishu can't quite bring himself to deny his own ravenous curiosity enough not to accept.

The stunning beauty that shows up with the girls of the Department of the Unfaithful, the one who introduces himself as Wen Kexing, is universally assumed to be a favorite plaything of the yet unseen Ghost Valley Master. His beauty and charm may be enough to captivate all the others into underestimating him, but Zhou Zishu knows a killer's eyes when he sees one. Wen Kexing is a puzzle he'd like to figure out, and Zishu himself can't say he isn't also captivated by dark eyes and a smile that wouldn't be out of place with blood in its teeth.

rage, rage against the dying of the light by Madcap_Miss [T, Word of Honor, Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu, 82k, Complete]

The thing about pushing people past their limits is that it makes them dangerous.

It is possible that this is a truth Wen Kexing and Xie Wang neglected to account for when making their grand plan.

tciddaemina - aka the one where Zhou Zishu reacts to Wen Kexing’s “death” by deciding to just murder absolutely everyone and gets very, very creative about it. Should probably be rated E for graphic violence, there is some gore here folks. Actually very a cathartic read

This series is heavily focused on the mermaid stuff but we learn about other characters along the way.

It's a long road from from "alien" to "partner."

During the surrender of Shanxi, ex-Marine Hannah Shepard agrees to parley with the fleet captain of the invading turian Blackwatch. Two decades later, Hannah's daughter Jane lives in the shadow of that infamous truce.

tciddaemina - takes a lot of creative license with worldbuilding and culture, but damn it pays off. really fun and compelling characterization.

How strange, Adashino thought to himself, that the lack of something as simple as touch could feel so acutely painful.

He sat slouched on the steps of his porch, his house dark and empty behind him, watching the sky deepen into an indigo dusk over the bay far below, sipping his sake cold. He sighed and leaned his head against the rough wood handrail beside him, feeling incredibly maudlin.

In which Adashino muses on the nature of loneliness and Ginko keeps his secrets close to the chest. Eventual softness and late night revelations.

Vow by TheIllusiveMantis [E, Dark Souls, Nameless King/Ornstein, 127k, Complete, extra warning because very sad]

“Thou shouldst not promise what is utterly outside of thy power, my prince,” his knight scolds him.

“Wouldst thou accept me?”

“And become what? What can I be but thy knight?”

Lord Gwyn makes his firstborn son an offer beyond belief, but it comes at a terrible price.

tciddaemina - unsurprisingly, this fic is a tragedy. all dark souls fics are. really beautiful stunning read, but be prepared for tears at the end. extra kudos for amazing dialogue the whole time

Chu Wanning is the emperor, and Mo Ran is his shadow.

Within Cartenon Temple, Jin-Woo dies a human. He comes back a little more divine.

A story of a god and his follower, told in 100-word snippets.

A Live Wire by modeoheim [M, OPM, Genos/Saitama, 39k, WIP]

A lot of heroes are doing it. Amai Mask is doing it - the Blizzard Group is doing it - Metal Bat and Tornado are doing it. The Hero Association says these livestreams are a good way to let the public get to know their saviors more closely and, most importantly, be more likely to donate money. Saitama decides to start streaming out of boredom more than anything else, but it quickly becomes... frankly, with his being the most-hated channel out of them all, and with Genos eventually finding out about it, more trouble than it's worth.

Fic Recs: Food & Cooking

For the Food & Cooking square of my trope bingo card! 11 fic recs all centered around food or cooking. About half of those are Sanji-centric One Piece fics b/c that's where my head has been lately, but there's also some Pushing Daisies, Leverage, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Fallout 4, Naruto.

Will be updated as I find more gems! In the meantime enjoy, and if you read anything you like don't forget to thank the author <3

Corn Dumplings by Anycents (One Piece, Gen, 8815 words):

"Sanji doing what he always does in his free time: discovering new ingredients, learning new recipes, changing peoples’ lives…"

Starting off with a recent fave! Despite the tags, Franky is only there for the first bit; the rest is all Sanji bonding with a young Fishman girl and her family, and it’s a fucking delight. Great OCs, great worldbuilding, great Sanji characterization.

A Day in the Life of A Cook by Sarcasticles (One Piece, Gen, 2957 words):

"The Straw Hat Pirates have no idea how much it takes to feed them, and Sanji is determined to keep it that way"

Pretty much exactly what the title offers: a day in Sanji’s life, complete with a lot of Straw Hat shenanigans and Luffy being. Luffy.

Four-letter Fruits by radio_silent (Pushing Daisies, Gen with background Chuck/Ned, 301 words):

"At least Olive didn't wander around kitchens unemployed and unannounced."

In which Olive makes a valiant effort to be more family-friendly, and take the name of fruits in vain. Cute, funny, and delightfully in character for the whole cast.

Fried Squid by Konsui’s Little Brother (One Piece, Gen, 680):

"When they got out of this part of the Grand Line, Zolo was never letting another piece of squid touch him again. For now though, he'd eat it with no complaint."

One of the first fic I read in the fandom, and still one of my favourites. A rough patch leaves the crew with limited food supplies, everyone grows tired of eating squid, and Zoro shows support in his own way.

If You Want It Done Right by Angel_Negra (Leverage, Gen, 271 words):

"A couple of firsts for Alec and Eliot."

Eliot sees Hardison’s kitchen, Hardison sees Eliot’s computer, and neither one is very happy with what he sees. Short, clever, and full of humour.

Insatiate by vageege (One Piece, Gen, 5682):

"Sanji smokes cigarettes for a couple of reasons."

A look at Sanji, food, and the long-term consequences of starving as a child. Unlike every other rec on this list this one deals with some pretty heavy stuff so please mind the warnings in the author’s note.

Life Expectancy of Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Harshly Dropping by Arvanion (Fire Emblem Awakening, Gen, 101 words):

"NEWS IN BRIEF - Local - Food - Issue 50-04 - Jan 24, 2014"

This one is so short there’s not really anything I can say about it except that it fits right in with the silliest parts of the game, and at 101 words there’s really no reason for you not to give it a read.

A Little Slice of 2077 by Nebulad (Fallout 4, Hancock/Sole, 1111 words):

"“You’re gunna kill me, hollerin’ like that,” he said as he made his way down the stairs.

“You say that about everything I do,” she protested, still enchanted by whatever was inside the dome. She was clicking buttons frantically but he didn’t think she was getting anywhere.

“Kind of hoping if I go it’ll be because of a perfect ten,” he said, nudging her as he finally got down the stairs."

Nebulad’s OCs are always compelling and Audrey is no exception. Part of a series, but can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone, though I’d heartily recommend giving the whole thing a go anyway.

not your momma’s cooking by CopperCaravan (Fallout 4, Mac/Sole, 1019 words):

"tumblr prompt fill: Mac & Cal + "You want me to do what?"

Cal has sorely missed good food and enlists MacCready in food prep."

Another author with great OCs! In which Cal harasses Mac into hunting some chickens and laments the difficulties of post-apocalyptic cooking.

Rice Paper by greenkangaroo (Naruto, Gen, 877 words):

"If you leave a secret in the box just outside their compound's back door, an Akimichi will eat it, written on rice paper."

This one is a bit of a different take on the prompt, but I couldn’t not include it. A very cool piece of worldbuilding about the Akimichi Clan the kind of which I wish we had in canon.

Taste Challenge by Maldoror_Chant (One Piece, Gen, 6378 words):

"Sanji didn't wonder why he gave himself the challenge. It didn't matter why. ‘Why’ was probably covered by one-upping the bloody swordsman, and maybe there were other reasons - stranger reasons - but that was the only one that really counted, right? It was decided. He was going to get Zoro to appreciate - no, love Sanji's food. If Sanji couldn't do it, then he wasn't a true sea-cook after all."

There is an accidental, additional theme to my One Piece recs and that theme is: Sanji & Zoro nakamaship. In this one, Sanji’s competitiveness gets just a little bit ahead of him, and a lot of delicious, delicious recipes are introduced in the process.
