noticing an interesting overrepresentation of lesbian producers in the american edm scene

I should say the scene that I consume as an american who goes to american festivals and mostly listens to mainstream american artists/genres (DUBSTEP with various amounts of bass and sadboi/sadgirl), but dabbles in almost everything (and I'm slowly being exposed to wacky underground euro stuff).

ok here's a list of all the out ones I've encountered: CloZee, J. Worra, Qrion, Rezz (ik she hasnt said it but she has been only been publicly only gay for a long ass time so I am counting her until she commits more bi acts). Also they're all quietly out, Clozee does some very cool, obviously homo stuff with Griz but generally its not obvious/important that theyre gay. They all kind of obviously clock tho LMAO, 4 is not bad tho!!!!

Heres all the other popular non gay female DJs I could scrape out of my head rn: Alison Wonderland, Krewella, LP Giobbi, Mija, Whipped Kream, Peggy Gou, Elohim, Charlotte de Witte, Nina Kravitz, JVNA, Sofi Tukker and Koven. Ok so 12 non gay women! Yay! Sounds great until I counted over 70 moids on ultra's lineup this year

4/16 is a full 1/4!!! obviously very unscientific, but considering we are 1% of all women or whatever, I'm confident there is a significantly higher % of (good!) lesbian DJs than the expected 1%. Just a really cool example of suspected homosuperiority that I noticed and needed to highlight.

shifter au bomba is a family lawyer! she does a lot of trust funds, wills, that kind of thing, and occasionally works with adoption cases, something near and dear to her heart, since she was adopted by jellylorum when she was very young.

she was found under a park bench when she was a a couple months old, left by her mother, grizabella, who couldn't take care of her, having been in a very bad place at that time, geographically and mentally (griz will say later that where she was was no place for a child, and she is absolutely correct). grizabella was the one who named her, and had known her name before she was born; she told bustopher her kitten's intended name, and later when jellylorum expressed concern over the kitten not having a name, bustopher was the one who, for all intents and purposes, named her.

no one ever questioned where he got the name.

she never knew her father (jellylorum's late mate, jonathan); he died before she was born. she grew up knowing asparagus as her older brother and called him "sparrow" because "asparagus" was too much for her little kitten mouth to handle. and he called her "robin," because if he was going to have a bird nickname, so was she.

of her extended family, she is closest to her aunt garbo, who gave her the nickname "rina" that she would ultimately end up using when she went out into the human world and couldn't go by "bombalurina." she later trained under garbo as an apprentice protector and was promoted to full protector status not long before she went off to law school.

of her immediate family, she's closest to gus, who knows all about her past lives, and who had once played parts that mimicked two out of three of bomba's lives: a tiger, and dick whittington's cat. gus loves to talk about his theater days and what it was like to play whittington's cat, and bomba laughs and tells him all the small things they got wrong, like how her name was diana, not tommy, and she was a molly, not a tom.

her third life as whittington's cat was her favorite and is the life she's most proud of. pantomine season is a mixed time for her, because she loves seeing that part of her life acted out, but it makes her miss whittington.

bomba figured out, really figured out, she was gay while she was in law school. she came out to gus first (who told her to date responsibly), then garbo (who was more than accepting of bomba, especially since garbo's own son, misto, was also gay), and then jellylorum. bomba was most afraid of telling lori, not knowing how she'd react, even though lori was actively and openly with jenny and skimble--but lori reacted just fine and was thrilled her daughter was so open with her.

she and cassandra, at some point, had an incredibly brief fling.

she has three scars on the back of her leg from the night macavity and one of his rat shifters attacked her in her office.

her younger siblings really look up to her: electra thinks she's the coolest person ever and has probably gotten into fights at school to defend bomba's honor with other kids who lowkey have a crush on her sister; pounce admires how damn confident she is and he wishes he had what she does; jemima loves how kind bomba is no matter what and thinks she gives the best hugs.

bomba becomes electra's mentor after electra says she wants to train to become a protector, and the only one she wants to train under is bomba.

bomba has deep, vibrant red hair (like this) and she keeps it either in a loose ponytail slung over her shoulder or in a loose braid.

she gets really lonely in her apartment sometimes, after growing up with so many other cats around. it's one reason why she's so happy that demeter decides to stay with her.

she majored in law in ungrad, but also minored in psychology and gender studies. she's incredibly well-versed in all things lgbt and she's the first one all of her siblings and cousins and friends come out to first.

unlike most cats, bomba doesn't have any additional powers aside from her ability to shapeshift. this is because she's a human/shifter hybrid: her mother was a shifter, but her father was a human.

(there was some brief concern that macavity--who is about forty (40) years older than bomba in this au--might have been her father, because hair as red as hers isn't a trait usually seen among the cats. but she never developed any powers anything like his, or any powers at all, and everyone naturally assumed--correctly--that her father had been human)

How does your family tree and romantic relationships differ from your human AU to the cat one?

There are a few differences, but it's relatively the same! Also I haven't worked in every single character into this AU yet, but I'm working on it!

Tugger and Munk are still brothers with Old Deut being their father. But Griz is explicitly their mother in this AU (Cats Universe I hc Griz to not be related to the Deut brothers at all). Old Deut and Griz are divorced, but are one of those divorced couples who are still very close and Griz is always around the house and shows up to events and family vacations. I like to think Human Old Deut is a gay man who remains best friends with his ex-wife, so Tugger and Munk were still raised by the two of them together.

Macavity is in this AU, but he isn't related to Tugger and Munk like he is in my Cats headcanons.

There also aren't as many open relationships in my human AU compared to cat AUs. The Jellicles are a poly normative society, but human AU it's not as common. Even still, Tugger is in a happy and stable poly relationship with Bomba and Misto. Munk is with Demeter, and eventually the two meet and fall for Alonzo who joins their relationship as well.

Bombalurina and Demeter are best friends who lived together for awhile after Demeter left Mac. They are very much those best friends who get very touchy feely with each other (especially when they are drunk).

Misto and Victoria are still siblings, with her being only a year younger than him. Victoria is still with this Plato in this AU and she's very close friends with Teazer and Jerrie as well.

Gus is Old Deut's brother, and he's their well-meaning but very out of touch Uncle who they love but he sometimes says the most out of pocket things out of nowhere.

Jerrie and Teazer are explicitly twins in this AU (I go back and forth with the cat universe since their relationship is always played differently depending on production) with Skimble and Jenny being their parents. The two are TikTokers (if you know the Voros Twins on Tiktok, their content is roughly the same as that) and Skimble and Jenny are very confused about how their kids make a living off dumb internet videos.

Cettie, Electra, Tumble and Pounce are all sophomores in college in this AU who work minimum wage part time jobs. Cettie is a barista at Starbucks (she likes to draw cute little hearts next to Tugger's name when he goes to Starbucks). I don't really have headcanons for what their relationships specifically are, but all four are very close.

Cats Warsaw first reaction thoughts part three: Memory through Macavity fight

Memory:

- I really do love this actress’s voice, I can’t find literally any flaws in her performance

- I feel like Griz needs to look more messed up. the costumes in this are definitely grunge-influenced, so Grizabella doesn’t look particularly ratty or anything compared to anyone else. Rub some dirt on that lady!

- I feel like they’re really playing up the “old Deut and Griz have a history”. That’s alright but it tends to have weird connotations when you think about it for a while.

Moments of Happiness:

- Deuteronomy has such a rich timbre, he’s singing the hell out of this song.

- wait why did I never notice the Skimbleshanks leitmotif in the middle of this song before— what does that mean??

- when they all start singing Memory is a really beautiful moment, the staging of all the cats spread out across the two levels makes it feel like a really personal moment for everyone involved

- the entire pit deserves a raise of 1,000,000 dollars each. Particularly the principal violinist but I don’t pick favorites

Gus the Theater Cat:

- there is a sack on the ground. What is in the sack. The sack says Gus on it. What is going on, is that the growltiger costume inside the sack? Jellylorum gestures to it on the “firefrorefiddle” line but she might not have said that?

- Jellylorum is giving CEO and I am living for it

- GUS IS SO PATHETIC OH NO I LOVE HIM. His costume is fantastic, I love the big collar, honestly that paired with the long wig he kind of looks like Broadway revival Grizabella, haha.

- it’s wrong to stereotype. That being said this Gus is gay as hell.

- all the kittens gathering round listening to him!!!!!!! My heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Growltiger’s Last Stand:

- this set!!!! I want to personally congratulate the designers and build crew because I am so impressed with all the moving parts! The boat is really transportive (no pun intended). In addition, the use of the cyc throughout the show has been really clever.

- Yknow it sucks that this number is racist because musically it’s so good—

- GRIDDLEBONE. QUEEN. Channeling Ariana Grande with that hair

- it’s really thoughtful to have translated subtitles for In Tepida Notte. I love this section once again why did the number have to be super racist :(

- who is the cat doing this narration? Normally isn’t it just the whole ensemble doing it?

- the transition back to the theater setting was flawless!

- oh my god Gus holding the costume and Jelly comforting him— I’m tearing up 😭😭😭

- what an entrance!!

I want this blog to be a documentation of my experience discovering this side of myself. I am gay, and I sort of have always known that. I’ve always liked big men. I’ve also always known that. I’ve never been too shy about that. I live with my boyfriend. I have a life with him. Everything is great. We’re both pretty transparent about enjoying adult content in addition to each other. All my life, I’ve always been near furry spaces. I think this is because of another unrelated interest of mine in the gainer/chaser space of the internet. A lot of the art from that space always landed me in bara art or furry bara art. For a long time, I thought nothing of it. I left things at “these characters are hot” and kept scrolling. But after watching a video essay about Adastra (linked here, it’s incredible, definitely recommend if you haven’t watched it), I realized that there is more to being a furry than consuming horny media. Of course, this is not to say that I explicitly thought this was the case, this was simply how I had always interacted with the community. Now, I think I want to participate in this space. I don’t know what I will be gaining from here. Perhaps nothing. Perhaps experiences. Who knows? But that’s enough for me. I want to learn how to draw in the style of furry artists who have characters that I love. I want to understand the satisfaction behind fursonas and how they interact across the internet. I don’t think I’m interested in fursuits simply because I live in a very warm area and the idea alone makes me sweat. But who knows where this path will take me. I will ask question here, and I am grateful for any answers I receive as I ramble into the void.

So let me introduce Griz. He does not have art yet, but he’s a persona I want to develop. I’ll learn to draw Griz one day, but for now he is a large, anthropomorphic bear (heavily inspired by Honeybum by @saltypoundcake on X) with muscles, a belly, a big chest, a gorgeous beard, and a passion for adventure. He has a lover (unnamed) who is a human male with whom he hikes and travels. I think that’s all for now. Hopefully this goes somewhere fulfilling.
