In the wake of the Ford government’s decision to dissolve the Region of Peel, local politicians in Vaughan are pushing the province to give the city its independence from York Region, setting the stage for the next battle over municipal governance in the Greater Toronto Area.

The province is expected to appoint facilitators to review the regions of York, Durham, Halton, Niagara, Simcoe and Waterloo to examine whether the two-tier systems should be dissolved, amalgamated or left intact. It’s part of the government’s push to streamline housing construction approvals in Ontario’s most populous cities.

"Horse-Thief Vigilantes Perk Up As Fuel Cut Brings Dobbin Back," Toronto Star. January 14, 1943. Page 8. --- Milton, Jan. 14 - Horse-thieving in season" hunters to protect their Halton county has fallen to such a low estate that the Halton County Protective association officials had to report to its membership at the annual meeting held here yesterday: "No claims paid in 1942."

But with the horse staging a comeback due to gasoline rationing, members are keeping a wary eye open lest there is a recurrence of this "pre-auto" crime. The association was formed 36 years ago by farmers as a sort of mutual protective society to ease losses from horse thefts and to aid in apprehending the rustlers.

When the number of horses, and consequently thefts, began to fall off, the group added livestock, buggies, cutters, harness and robes to their growing list. They also insured against the new menace of "open season" hunters to protect their cattle.

"We had to do something to keep the association alive after horse stealing declined," recalled Mr. Ellenton, who was re-elected president. "So few claims were made for livestock in the past few years, we decided to insure members' cars against theft up to an amount of $150. For loss of livestock we pay members two-thirds of the animals value. Now the horse seems to be coming back for the duration."

ARP 273, also known as "the Rose", is a pair of interacting galaxies located in the constellation of Pegasus.

ARP 273 is classified as a part of the Arp catalog, which is a collection of peculiar galaxies compiled by astronomer Halton Arp in the 1960s.

A major environmental group is calling on the federal government to block Ontario's controversial Highway 413, saying the proposed 52-kilometre motorway would be costly to taxpayers and damaging to the environment.

The David Suzuki Foundation is asking the federal minister of environment, Steven Guilbeault, to intervene and stop the project through a petition that's racked up more than 50,000 signatures.

Gideon Forman, a climate change policy analyst with the foundation, says the highway — which would run from Highway 400 in York Region to Highway 401 in Halton Region — would incentivize more fuel-burning vehicles, pave thousands of acres of farmland and hundreds of acres of Greenbelt and threaten endangered species along the route.

The driver of a transport truck carrying live pigs was told by a 911 dispatcher not to move less than a minute before his truck drove forward, killing animal activist Regan Russell, according to information obtained by the Star related to the 2020 case. “Just stay in your truck with the doors locked, don’t move, and we’ll be there as soon as we can,” the Halton Region Police 911 dispatcher told the driver of the truck, who had stopped just outside the gates of a Burlington pork processing plant. “All right,” said the driver, according to an audio recording of the 911 call. Forty-three seconds later, the driver put his truck in gear, accelerated to 20.5 km/h, turned into the plant and struck Russell, 65, who was standing in the driveway with her right hand raised. This 911 information did not appear to form part of the court case when the driver, Andrew Blake, pleaded guilty earlier this year to careless driving causing death, a Highway Traffic Act infraction. Blake was fined $2,000 and his driving was restricted to work hours for one year.

The Ford government is setting its sights on building its signature Highway 413 project next year, with plans for the controversial route to begin construction in 2025.

In a muddy field in Caledon, Ont., along the route of the proposed highway on Tuesday morning, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and construction leaders promised the route would not be the last new major road.

“We are delivering on our promise to build Highway 413 with a plan to fix gridlock and get drivers across Halton, Peel and York regions where they need to go faster,” Ford said.

The 52-kilometre highway is set to run from Milton to Vaughan, cutting through Peel Region and the edge of the Greenbelt. It has been a signature Ford government policy and a lightning rod for opposition, particularly among environmental groups.

The province said it is currently doing fieldwork on the project, which includes borehole drilling, soil evaluations and bedrock studies. Land expropriations are expected to follow this year, with the province getting landowners along the route to sell. [...]
