Office Hours - Chapter Eleven
Summary:
You and Astarion have a little check-in about your preferences.
Pairing: Astarion/f!Reader Rating: Explicit Word Count: 6.1k Tags/Warnings: mentions of many, many different kinks, slightly less than ideal kink negotiation, choking, blood drinking, fingering, rough sex, honestly all the standard stuff at this point
I swear I'm not doing this intentionally, but I'm finally posting chapter 11 when the draft for chapter 12 is up on my Kofi. Eventually I'll get my shit back on schedule.
As always, the professor screenshot is from @zipzoomzaria.
Read it on AO3 ~ Masterlist
The sky outside your living room window is streaked with orange and purple from the nearly set sun. Lying on your couch with your feet propped up on the coffee table, you open an incognito tab on your phone. No sense in ruining your algorithm. You search ‘BDSM checklist’ and click on the first result, an extensive PDF that looks relatively promising. You’re trying to not be judgmental, but as you scroll through the list you’re plagued with thoughts ranging from “Wait, that’s a kink? Isn’t that just standard?” to “People are actually into that?” to “Oh. Oh.”
Your eyes scan down the list. There are just so many options that you hadn’t considered.
Bondage – light: yes. Bondage – heavy: maybe? Bondage – all day/multi day: definitely not. Collars – worn in private: absolutely. Collars – worn in public: …maybe?
You picture yourself walking around with Astarion in public with a collar on. Maybe not something so explicit as a dog collar, but like a little choker? Just for you and him? The thought sends a small thrill up your spine. You keep scrolling.
Fetishes: boot worship, cock worship, corsets… sure. Cross dressing? The image of Astarion wearing lacy lingerie and giving you a come hither stare over his glasses brings a light flush to your cheeks.
You open up your text messages and stare at your sparse conversation with him. The picture of His Majesty chewing on The 48 Laws of Power is still prominent, making you smile. Your thumbs hover over the keyboard, but you have no idea what to say. Come over so we can compare kinks? I want to tell you in explicit detail all of the depraved things I want you to do to me? You drop your head back on the couch and stare at your ceiling for a few minutes while you try to sort through your thoughts. Better to be simple and direct, right? After a heavy sigh, you type:
-Do you have plans tonight? Do you want to come over?
You pause before hitting send, suddenly unsure. Why is this the thing giving you anxiety? It’s still hard to be so forthright with him while every instinct screams at you to play it cool. With another huff you clench your jaw and hit send.
You put your phone face down on the couch next to you so you’re not tempted to stare at it. You start to feel antsy without anything for your hands to do and your eyes trace the dents in your worn down popsocket. The seconds stretch on for what feels like hours, and you’re convinced that you’ve said the wrong thing. That he’s changed his mind and decided that you’re not worth the effort after all.
Finally you hear the soft hum of your phone buzz, and you frantically flip it over to read his answer.
-I’d love to. Shall I bring anything? A leash, perhaps?
You giggle and squeal and press your thighs together all at once. You settle back on the couch and tuck your feet beneath you, smiling like a schoolgirl with a crush. An apt comparison, honestly.
-Not yet, but maybe one of those fancy expensive wines.
Your heart thrums as your eyes dart around your apartment, making sure it isn’t too messy. You generally keep it fairly tidy, although compared to Astarion’s place yours is downright spotless. The briefest image flashes through your mind of the two of you living together before you internally scold yourself. Absolutely not, it’s way too soon for those thoughts.
Your phone buzzes again, and you look over at it, surprised.
-You’re still my favorite vintage, darling. 🤍
If someone had been around to hear the noise you just made, you would’ve vehemently denied it.
***
You nearly jump out of your skin when you finally hear the knock on the door. You quickly check your hair in the mirror before opening it, and there he is, looking as dashing as ever in a lavender button down and forest green trousers. His collar is undone just enough to get a peek of the delicate silver chains resting on his collarbone, and his sleeves are rolled up, showing off his sinewy forearms. You take the bottle from his hand, your fingers lingering on his wrist momentarily, and gesture for him to come inside. You put the wine down on the counter and turn back to him as he slips his hands around your waist, his cool hands resting on the skin of your lower back below your crop top. You stand on your toes and loop your arms around his neck, gently pressing your lips to his.
“Hi,” you murmur with a shy smile.
“Hi,” he repeats, resting his forehead against yours. You pull away reluctantly and open the cabinets to take out glasses for wine. Astarion glances down at your socked feet and then over to your shoe rack by the door.
“Oh, erm… would you like me to remove my shoes?” he asks, uncertainty apparent in his voice.
“Oh!” You didn’t consider that he probably hasn’t spent much time in other people’s spaces, and you don’t want to push him outside his comfort zone. “Well, uh… you don’t have to, I guess.” He studies your expression and frowns.
“I feel as though you’d like me to,” he says carefully, and then before you can respond, he walks over to the shoe rack and slips off his shoes, placing them neatly on top of the rack.
“Thanks,” you mumble, and he crosses back to you and kisses your temple. You linger in his scent for a moment longer before turning toward your tablet resting on your kitchen island. You unlock the screen and pull up the checklist you had been perusing earlier, then slide it over to him to look at.
“So in the spirit of, you know, being on the same page about things,” you tell him as you pull out your kitschy pirate-shaped corkscrew, “I wanted to look at a list of like, things to try, and I dunno, talk about it.” You don’t know why you’re so nervous about this. You certainly don’t have much experience with being so explicit about your desires, preferring instead to rely on nonverbal communication with partners. Which, in retrospect, might explain more than a few disappointing experiences.
Astarion brushes your hair back from your neck and lightly runs his nose along your ear, eliciting a shiver. “You wouldn’t just rather have a repeat of the evening at the bowling alley?” You lean your head back into him for a moment, savoring his touch, before steeling yourself and pulling away.
“No, we should actually talk about it,” you sigh heavily, barely able to keep the disappointment out of your voice.
“Having a conversation, how novel,” he says with that high-pitched giggle you find so very charming. You pour generous servings of wine and take a long sip before settling yourself onto a barstool.
“So they split it into different categories, and then there are a lot of subcategories,” you explain, trying to be chill about it and only mostly succeeding.
“People can get very specific about their wants, it’s true,” he agrees sagely, and you’re suddenly reminded of his centuries of experience over you. You try not to let that make you feel even more insecure than you already do.
“Right. So um… blindfolds, light bondage, chains.” You make little check marks next to the ones you’re interested in with your tablet pen.
“Collars, I believe you articulated something along those lines,” he smiles at you salaciously, and you take a deep sip of your wine to hide your embarrassment. He places his hand on your lower back reassuringly, and you muster the resolve to continue scanning down the list.
“Various cuffs sound good to me, although I’m not sure if I know what ‘handcuff style’ means,” you say, putting the pen to your lips in thought.
“May I?” he asks, holding out his hands to indicate that he’s asking for permission to demonstrate it on you. You nod and slip off the barstool, and in an instant he has you spun around and your wrists pinned together behind your back. He’s gentle enough, but uses just the right amount of force to make you gasp. “Do you like that?” His voice is low in your ear and your heart threatens to leap out of your chest.
“I, uh… think you can surmise the answer to that,” you tease a little breathlessly, and the puff of air from his chuckle tickles your neck.
“Perhaps, but if I’ve learned anything, it’s that I want to hear you say it.” He punctuates the sentence by tightening the grip on your hands ever so slightly.
“Then yes, I do.” The words come out a little strained but he deems your answer satisfactory. He releases your wrists and you turn back to him to see him with an incredibly smug grin. You playfully shove his face and return to the list, and he leans over your shoulder to read along with you.
“Thoughts on gags?” he asks, and you think it over for a moment.
“I think probably not, although maybe tape, just none of these other ones. I don’t want to get all drool-y.” You throw him a mischievous glance over your shoulder. “Although on you, I might reconsider.” You stick your knuckle in his mouth and he closes his lips around your finger, sucking on it while keeping his eyes trained on you. He pulls your finger out with a lewd pop and pulls your wrist into his lips, grazing his fangs along your pulse point.
“You’d be hurting yourself more than helping, darling,” he murmurs into your skin, and you bite your lip in an attempt to control your breathing. He uses your momentary distraction to snatch the pen out of your hand. “And I’ll go ahead and put a tick next to ‘leashes’ right here.”
“I thought you wanted to hear me say it,” you needle him back, pressing up against him unnecessarily to retrieve the pen.
“Oh I most certainly would,” he purrs, and you feel a heat creep up the back of your neck. You continue scanning down the list, adding checkmarks to some of the things you’ve already done. You reach ‘blood play’ and add a check. Astarion leans down and gives your neck a quick little nip, not enough to break the skin, but enough to make you yelp.
“Fetishes,” you read, tapping the pen to your lips. “You know, I’m definitely into some of these things, corsets, high heels – I might even still have some of the costume pieces from when I was in Venus in Fur that they let me keep.”
Astarion’s eyebrows disappear into his hairline. “Venus in Furs, as in, the Sacher-Masoch book?”
“Based on it, yeah. Venus in Fur, singular, by David Ives.”
“I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing some production photos from that,” he teases, running his fingers along the waistband of your skirt.
“Well maybe I should just model the costume for you in person,” you murmur, turning into his chest and tilting your chin upward. He follows your lead, capturing your lips into a heated kiss. Your head grows foggy with lust and you finally push him away. “Focus,” you scold yourself as much as him.
“I am extremely focused right now,” he hums, looking down at you through heavy-lidded eyes.
“Hmm, prove it,” you retort, and tap the pen on your tablet screen. “What are your thoughts, um. On crossdressing.” You’re a little embarrassed to ask, but you continue to barrel through your shame. Jaheira would be proud.
“Would you like that?” His voice remains just as lust-filled and you flush a deep red. “Seeing me in a cute little skirt and thigh high stockings?”
The image in your mind is vivid: Astarion straddling your lap, a miniskirt flaring out from his hips and his cock pressing against you through thin satin panties. You nearly start hyperventilating.
“Uh-huh,” you breathe heavily.
“Duly noted,” he says with a giggle. You blink to focus your eyes back to reality and return to the list.
“Humiliation?” you ask, and he shrugs. “Yeah, me neither. Impact and rough play. Uh…” you scan through the list, putting down a few checks – face slapping, riding crops, spanking. “Oh. Um. Non-monogamy.” You turn to him to gauge his expression. He returns your gaze equally carefully.
“Is that something that interests you?” he asks, his voice neutral.
“Probably not dating… um… but I could consider a threesome, like, with the right person. Unless you’re not into that,” you add quickly, and his lips curl into a smile.
“We can cross that bridge if we come to it,” he replies and plants a kiss in your hair.
“Okay, I like that,” you hum appreciatively. You move onto the next category. “Role play. None of these are of particular interest to me, probably… ugh, schoolroom scenes, I can’t.” You shudder and he lets out a cackle.
“Not interested in a professor/student roleplay?” he asks with a roguish smile. “No looking for extra credit to get your grade up?”
You have another visceral reaction. “Too close to home, no thank you. Although…”
“Reconsidering?” he narrows his eyes playfully.
“No! I was just looking… Well, two jump out at me. Uh…” you struggle against your internalized shame and let out a growl of frustration. He takes your face in his hands and forces you to look at him. His cool touch is a soothing balm against the fiery heat in your cheeks.
“Darling, you can tell me. Trust me, I’m sure it isn’t anything I haven’t already heard.” His voice is gentle, but there’s almost a sadness behind it that you can’t place. You take a deep breath and hold onto his hand, keeping it pressed against your cheek.
“Okay. The first one is fear play. Like… I like when you get a little animalistic. Almost a predator/prey kind of thing.” You avoid his gaze despite his insistence, but you power through. “The other one is switching roles. I may have… fantasized… about you being a bit of a needy sub.” You almost swallow your last few words before looking up to his gaze again. His red eyes are completely inscrutable.
“Well, I’m more than happy to hunt you down, love,” he leers at you and your breath catches. Then his expression falters, shifting into something more contemplative. “As for the second…” Your whole body tenses in anticipation of the ‘but.’ “I’d have to think about it. I don’t relish the idea of giving up that much control.”
“Ohmygodsnoit’stotallyfinewedon’thavetotalkaboutiteveragain.” The words pour out of your mouth in a barely coherent jumble. He laughs and pulls your face into his, giving you a tender kiss.
“I said I’d think about it, darling, not that it’s an outright no.” He searches your eyes for any indication of understanding, and you nod. He looks back at the next category on the list. “Sensation play, non-impact,” he reads, and he laughs when his eyes fall on ‘biting/being bitten.’
“Yeah, I guess that one’s pretty obvious,” you say sheepishly, putting a check next to it. He looms over your shoulder and you feel the electricity crackling between the two of you.
“Now, I’d like to ask for a point of clarification,” he considers while pointing at ‘breath control (choking)’ and ‘breath control (mild restriction.)’
“Uh-huh?” you ask, barely trusting yourself to articulate words. He maintains eye contact with you as he brings his hand to your throat hesitantly, a silent question. You give him a shallow but prolonged nod, your breath quickening with excitement. He closes his hand slowly, testing the pressure. Your mouth falls open with a silent moan.
“Mild?” he asks, his voice husky. Your fingers curl and flex on the counter, dropping the tablet pen.
“Yeah,” you squeak out, your blood pounding in your ears. His eyes glint with a devilish fire and a smile slowly creeps onto his lips.
“Good,” he hums, low and dangerous. He studies your face for a moment longer, turning your chin left and right, almost like he’s examining you. Your body trembles, waiting for his next move. He suddenly pulls you up onto your toes, your face close to his, his nails digging into your flesh. You whine, high and loud and undeniably aroused.
He continues with his interrogation. “And how is this? Yes or no, pet.” Under any other circumstances, his voice might be considered gentle.
“Y-yes,” you stammer, your voice cracking.
“Yes, what?” he spits through gritted teeth, tightening his hand and tearing another wanton moan from your lips.
“Y-yes daddy,” the word tumbles out of you before you can even think to stop it.
Evidently it was the correct answer because his features split with a feral grin as he snarls, “That’s my good girl,” before crushing your lips into his. You grasp weakly at his hips as he devours you, and you’re more than happy to let him. He slides his hands under your ass and plunks you down on the island. He grabs the hem of your shirt and yanks it over your head, pulling your hips in closer to his waist as he continues to ravage your lips.
He snakes his hand into your hair and pulls your head back, exposing your neck to his destruction. “Little love, tell me what you desire,” he growls into your ear, and you clutch your arms around his shoulders.
“You,” you manage to gasp out, “I- ah- I want you. To have your way with me. Destroy me, consume me, take your fill. I want you, Astarion.” You tense up, waiting for his bite, but instead he leaves a trail of sloppy kisses and nips down your chest. He closes his lips around your nipple under your bra, sucking on it through the lace. You run your fingers through his curls and drop your head back with a moan.
Before you can adjust to the feeling of his tongue on your nipple, his lips continue their journey down your stomach and to the waistband of your skirt. He hikes it up to your hips, hooking his fingers into the band of your panties and pulls them down past your knees, discarding them onto the kitchen floor. He hovers his mouth over your slick cunt and shifts his gaze up to you. You can feel his cool breath and you whimper and squirm, aching for any part of him.
“Your hand, love,” he purrs as he reaches out for your wrist, pulling your fingers to your swollen clit. You groan as you make contact, instinctively rubbing little circles to give yourself the relief you crave. He slides his nimble fingers into your cunt and you jerk your hips into him, clenching around him and breathing heavily. He slowly pumps his fingers as you massage your clit, never taking his eyes off you. It’s almost too intense and you want to look away, but you’re transfixed. His lips drift to your inner thigh, his fangs ghosting over your skin.
“Please,” you mewl, and the breath from his laugh tickles your thigh. He straightens up and puts his lips to your ear, his fingers never straying from their tortuous pace.
“You’re going to listen closely to what I’m about to say and you will follow my instructions, understood?” You whimper out a noise of assent, trying to match your fingers to his. “I’m going to bite you, and you’re going to continue touching yourself while I drink. And you’re not going to be stingy with those needy little moans of yours, my sweet, I want to hear and taste you come.”
“Yes sir,” you squeal, and your breath quickly turns into a groan when he sinks his teeth into you. Your fingers slow at the overwhelm of sensation, but when his own fingers speed up as he takes in long greedy pulls of your blood, your need becomes almost unbearable. You clutch at the back of his head with one hand as the other services your clit, and you pant in his ear as he drinks. “Fuck, Astarion, gods, yes,” you gasp the explitives into his hair. Your hips buck into your hand as you bring yourself closer, aided by his fingers dragging against your walls and his tongue lapping at your neck. You quickly grow dizzy with lust and blood loss, your vision clouding you ramp up to the edge. Your fingers tangle into his curls as your whimpers and whines grow high and needy. When you feel the vibration of his own groan against your skin, your orgasm crashes down on you, your cunt and neck both throbbing with pleasure. He rides it out with you, lazily licking your wounds closed.
He pulls away from you and the sight of his lips red with your blood sends another surge through you, and you grab his face and kiss him roughly. He wraps his arms around your waist, the fingers on his left hand still sticky with your cum. You claw at the buttons of his shirt, desperate to feel his cool, smooth chest. Once you’ve rid him of the offending clothing, you break the kiss to catch your breath, sliding your hands over his shoulders and down his arms. He growls with a low appreciation.
“My darling, you taste delectable,” he hums and swipes his thumb across your lips, collecting a drop of your blood and sucking it off lasciviously. You pant and look at him through blurry eyes, your legs still shaking. He pulls you off the counter and your knees buckle as you land, barely able to hold up your weight. “On your knees, my treasure.”
You happily drop to the floor, never taking your eyes off his. He towers over you with a sinister smile and you slide your hands around the back of his thighs, just trying to brace yourself. Your mouth hangs open, hungry for him but waiting for instructions. He cards his hand through your hair, letting it run around your ear and down under your chin.
“So eager for me,” he says in a low voice, and he slips his thumb into your mouth. You suck on it fervently, keeping your carnal gaze on him, aching to please. His eyes flutter closed briefly and he lets out a long breath. You keen into his thumb, a nonverbal plea for his cock. He yanks his digit back from your mouth and closes his hand around your throat once more, bending over for a heated kiss. When he finally releases you, you’re panting again, the whimpers practically uncontrollable.
He begins to unbuckle his pants and you pull up on your knees, begging like a needy pup. “Little love, is this what you want? My cock shoved down your throat?” He pulls out his erection, engorged and flushed pink with your blood, as you nod with a whine. “Good. Open,” he commands and you dutifully obey, taking him as far into your mouth as you can. You swallow down your gag reflex, keeping your eyes trained on him as his head falls back with a moan. You bob your head on his cock, your nails digging into the back of his thighs. He tangles his hand into your hair and you hold still as he thrusts into your mouth.
“Fuck, Tav,” he hisses and you moan around his cock, spurred on by that jolt of electricity you only get from hearing him say your name. He yanks your hair to pull you off his cock, and he looks at you with wild eyes for a moment before pushing you down onto your back. The kitchen tile is hard and cool against your skin, and you’re all too aware of every knot and point of tension along your back. But your legs fall open for him anyway as he pulls his pants down to his knees and positions himself at your entrance. He teases your slit with the tip of his cock, gathering your wetness and spreading it down onto the shaft with his hand.
“Please,” you croak, your hips canting upwards towards him. He lets out a shuddering breath that’s almost a laugh.
“Use your words, love.” His voice is thick with lust, which just sets you off more.
“Please,” you beg with even more desperation, “please fuck me and choke me, Astarion. Please.” You’re almost crying with need at this point, and the noise you make when he finally buries himself into you up to the hilt is utterly obscene. He grabs your throat and digs his fingers into the side of your larynx, just barely restricting your air supply. He pounds into you with long, powerful strokes, and you claw at the kitchen floor to keep yourself from sliding backwards. You let out a strained cry with each thrust, pleasure and sensation overwhelming your body.
“Look at me,” he snarls with a slight squeeze on your throat, and you snap your gaze to him. He looks borderline bestial, his eyes wild with bloodlust, his hair falling over his glasses. His expression alone would have been enough to get another orgasm out of you, but the look paired with the feeling of his controlling and possessive hand around your throat sends you careening off the edge with a cry. A few more broken thrusts of his hips and he’s following, his cock throbbing as he spills into you. He falls forward onto your stomach limply, breathing heavily as you push the curls back off his sweaty forehead.
You reach across your alleyway kitchen and grab a dish towel hanging off your oven door. Astarion slides out of you and you gently wipe your combined spend off his cock. When you look up you catch him staring at you adoringly.
“What?” you shy away as he pulls his pants back up, and he chuckles.
“Nothing. You’re just beautiful like that, is all.” He takes the towel from your hand and returns the favor, wiping down your inner thigh before crawling toward you and planting a featherlight kiss on your lips. A thousand different thoughts run through your head before you resolutely decide to continue the conversation from earlier. You strain your neck up at the kitchen island above you and frown.
“My tablet is so far away,” you pout, reaching upward pathetically. He rolls his eyes and stands to retrieve your tablet and your wine glass, handing them to you as you lean your back against the island cabinets. “My hero,” you croon as he sits down beside you, taking his own glass with him. He takes a long sip while watching you out of the corner of the eye and you pull the list back up.
“Now where were we?” You scoot over towards him and loop your arm through his, resting your cheek on his shoulder.
“I believe we got side tracked right around ‘breath control,’” he says as he takes the pen off the side of the tablet and puts checks next to the relevant entries. You shove him with your body and continue your journey down the list. You consider a few more – temperature play, sensory deprivation, teasing…
“Ooh, this one is specific to elves!” you squeal with delight when your eyes land on ‘ear play - elves.’ You quickly nip at his earlobe and he makes a shuddering moan, a somewhat disproportionate response for how relatively tame your action is.
“Ah- yes, I thought you had figured that one out,” he quavers with a laugh, and you suddenly redden.
“Oh. Ohh.” It suddenly dawns on you that the differences between elf and human anatomy are more than just visual. “Is that something you like? That you’re okay with?”
He laughs. “Yes, very much so, just be cautious with it if you don’t want things to come to a sudden, messy end.”
You nod and then add mischievously, “Good to know.” You turn your eyes back to the list. “What the fuck are vampire gloves?” You google the phrase while Astarion scoffs.
“There’s nothing more desirable in the world than a vampire, is there?” he spits, venom apparent in his voice. You look up from your phone, which is displaying pictures of leather gloves with spiked palms.
“What do you mean?” you ask, a little nervous. His vampiric nature has become an integral part of your relationship, but it’s never come up so explicitly.
“It’s nothing,” he exhales heavily. “I’ve just had more than my fair share of lovers who were more interested in my fangs than in me.”
You freeze beside him as he continues to scroll through the list with his finger. You’d like him regardless of whether he’s a vampire or not – in fact, you didn’t even know when you first discovered your attraction to him. But you certainly don’t feel neutral about it, and now you’re worried that you’ve fetishized him.
“Love?” He turns to you, since he must have heard your heart stop. You chew on your lip uncomfortably.
“I’m sorry if I, like, made it weird,” you mutter, your cheeks red hot.
“What? Darling, no,” he hushes you reassuringly. “It’s different when it’s you.”
You wrinkle your nose with incredulity. “I don’t know, it doesn’t feel like it is.”
“My sweet, you have a stunning pair of tits,” he begins, and the non sequitur makes you bark out a laugh. “What I’m saying is that it’s something that I like about you, but it’s not the only thing I like about you. And I’m sure you’ve met your fair share of people who only saw you as a walking rack.” You smile, but you’re still not fully convinced. Your eyes linger on the right side of his neck, hidden from view but you can see the bite mark with perfect clarity in your mind’s eye. He brushes a lock of your hair behind your ear.
“Darling, I haven’t exactly been subtle about how I feel about your blood,” he says in a smoky voice, and a shiver runs up your spine, “even moreso when you’re aroused. I wouldn’t change that, not for all the moonstones in Evereska.”
You pout for a moment longer while he gazes at you earnestly. “And you promise to tell me if I get weird about it?”
He chuckles and presses a kiss to your hairline. “Yes, I promise to tell you if you get weird about it.” Your words sound odd in his posh accent, but it gets a smile out of you nonetheless. “Now, I believe the next category is ‘Service and Restricted-slash-Controlled Behavior.’ Well, that’s certainly a mouthful.”
“Funny, you were a mouthful not that long ago,” you say with a licentious grin.
“Hmm, points for clever wordplay, but reduced marks for low hanging fruit. B+.” He glances at you over his glasses and you gawk at him.
“Excuse me, did you just grade my dirty joke?”
“I hold myself to a higher standard, and I expect the same of you,” he says haughtily and you roll your eyes.
“I think it was at least an A-,” you mutter and he laughs.
“Of course you would, professor,” he smirks at you.
“Are you calling me an easy grader?” you gasp, your affront over the top and theatrical.
“No, just easy,” he hums, leaning in for a kiss, to which you respond by biting his lip. You snatch the pen out his hand and look back at the list. One in particular jumps out at you.
“Oh, the dress that you got me, you know, the night you did the meanest thing anyone has ever done to me?” you say, and you can feel him tense up beside you.
“Have I mentioned how sorry I am for that? And also how wonderful and talented and intelligent you are?” His words carry an air of jest but the concern in his eyes is real.
“And funny?” You widen your smile in an attempt to set him at ease.
“Well, let’s not go that far.” He visibly relaxes when it’s clear you’re just teasing.
“Anyway,” you glare at him playfully, “I was going to say that I liked that. I like when you pick out clothes for me.”
“Then I’ll keep that in mind,” he says with a raised eyebrow. Then his voice drops as he breathes, “You truly were a vision in that dress. I’ll have another one made, if it’s to your liking.” You close your eyes contentedly as he nuzzles your ear, and all you can do is nod. You finally clear your throat to shift your attention back to the list.
“Oh, how about chores?” you muse, tossing him a snarky grin. “Do you think you’d want to don a cute little maid’s outfit and clean my apartment?”
“You could sell me on the maid’s outfit, but darling, you’ve seen my home, you know that I’m not one for cleaning.”
Your mind supplies the very unhelpful image of Astarion wearing a French maid outfit and your brain short circuits. Astarion catches you glitching and laughs.
“Someone is very enthusiastic about seeing me in a dress,” he says, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.
“Shut up, you’re just really cute,” you mumble, and he wraps his arm around your shoulder and kisses the top of your head.
“Serving other Doms, supervised only,” he reads. “Well, as long as I get to watch.” His voice drops salaciously and you stifle a giggle.
“Like the idea of watching me beg for some big strong Dom?” you volley back, trying to keep your cool.
“Darling, I just like watching you beg.” His voice rumbles low in his chest and you shiver. You move onto the next category, sexual activity and penetration, and wordlessly check entries that, for you at least, just feel pretty standard. Astarion takes the pen from you and puts a check next to ‘strap-on-dildos.’ You glance at him with raised eyebrows and he just smirks in response.
Despite the amount of semi-public sex the two of you have had, you don’t give the next category, ‘Voyeurism and Exhibitionism,’ much attention. The final category, ‘Magic in the Bedroom,’ gives you pause.
Astarion scrolls through the list with his finger, musing, “Since neither of us are magic users, I imagine we’d simply go shopping for scrolls together.”
“Hey Astarion,” you say, and he turns his head to you.
“Hmm?”
“The charm person potion. That I found in your trash.” You keep your voice even, and he frowns.
“Ah. Yes. I, erm… I’m still very sorry for that.” His voice is uncharacteristically stilted.
“Why did you do it?” you ask quietly. You’re pretty sure you know the answer, but you still want to hear him say it. He exhales a deep sigh and waits several moments before finally answering.
“I’ve had more than a few close calls with, ah, potential lovers, shall we say.” He stares off into the middle distance and your eyes trace his profile. “I didn’t think you were secretly a Gur, but also, I’d rather not take my chances.”
“And the thing you said about wanting to seem more charismatic?” You put your hand on his knee in an attempt to soothe both him and yourself.
“A lie. Well,” he corrects himself, frowning, “a half-truth. If I could guarantee that you wouldn’t want to ram a stake through my heart, then you finding my otherwise grating personality slightly more charming was merely a bonus.”
You study his face for a moment longer and then take your hand and turn his chin so he’s facing you. “Hey. Thank you for telling me. I appreciate it.”
“I was selfish,” he growls, the self-hatred pouring out of him in waves. “I was so focused on my own safety that how you might feel about it didn’t even occur to me.” He clenches his jaw and you put your tablet on the floor and sidle yourself between his legs. You wrap your arms around him, pressing your bare skin flush against his.
“I wish you hadn’t,” you murmur into his ear. “But I understand why you did. I’m certainly no stranger to feeling unsafe on a date. There are other ways to guarantee your safety, but I think you know that now.”
He lets out a shuddering breath followed by a quiet laugh. “I don’t relish you seeing me like this.”
“Too bad, get treasured, idiot,” you giggle and he pulls out of the hug to take your face in his hands and give you a sensual kiss. You melt into his arms, breathing in his scent deeply. “Bed?” you ask, and he nods silently. You stand and help pull him to his feet, leading him into your bedroom.

Review: Draw Steel Backer Packet 1
I recently ran a playtest game of Draw Steel, a TTRPG being developed by MCDM. I’ve been a diehard Matt Colville fan since before he started MCDM, so suffice to say I’ve been very eager to get my hands on Draw Steel. Now that I have, I feel obligated to write out my thoughts on the game that I ran.
A few disclaimers before I get into it, though. First, the game I ran was accurately billed as a first draft. It was essentially the bare minimum needed to run a game - half the classes, only level one, a few cohorts of low-level monsters, bare-bones character sheets, etc. What I saw was not necessarily representative of the final product.
Second, the adventure I ran was also one provided in the packet and written by MCDM. That module colored my experience of the game at least as much as the rules themselves, but I’ll get into that later.
Third, as mentioned, longtime diehard Colville fan. I am biased.
Let’s also clear up which version of the game I’m talking about. The game I ran was from the first “backer packet,” sent out to folks who had backed the game at the end of August. The game has certainly undergone revisions and expansions since then, but I don’t have access to those since I’m not on MCDM’s Patreon.
Alright, let’s dive in!
Presentation
Given that this was, as advertised, the bare minimum needed to play a game, the rules suffered from an almost total lack of formatting. It was a tiny step above raw text, just a pdf with chapters and headings. The pdf did have bookmarks, but the toolbar is fully exploded when you open it. Given the sheer number of headings, this made it no more useful for navigation than scrolling the pages themselves. Finding the rule we needed in a given moment was difficult.
The ordering of the document was good for character creation, but bad for rules referencing. You have the absolute core mechanics, then step-by-step character creation, then detailed rules. Having the rules split by all the character options was less than ideal. If I needed to hunt for a rule, I didn’t know whether that rule was going to be towards the front of the document or towards the back, and guessing wrong meant a lot more scrolling.
I wasn’t playing a character, as I was the GM, but several of my players complained about the character sheets being messy, making it hard to find their own abilities and get a sense of what their options were. On my end, I thought the monster statblocks were very well done, with everything I needed to know presented in a nice, compact entry.
On the one hand, I was forewarned of the lack of formatting, and the backers were told that we may prefer to wait for a better formatted document, so there is a bit of caveat emptor here. Still, I don’t think you should ever let a customer’s first impression of your product be that much of a mess, even if they opt into it. It’s only going to do you a disservice, potentially killing their hype with frustration. If I absolutely had to see every rule and revision as early as possible, I’d be on the Patreon.
One part about the formatting I did like, though, was the conversational writing style and the use of prose to sell the game’s fiction. For example, each of the playable ancestries is preceded by a short scene that shows their place in the game’s pre-packaged setting. I found it very effective, though not all my players would agree with me. One said that the Devil ancestry’s entry made them seem very silly, and described the writing style as “too quippy for [their] taste.” That is to say, your mileage may vary.
Mechanics
I’m going to assess the game mechanics in terms of Draw Steel’s tagline: Tactical Cinematic Heroic Fantasy. After discussing the core dice mechanic, that is
The core mechanic is a bit unusual for a game of this type in that you roll against static targets that are not affected by the enemy and/or difficulty of the task at hand. In fact, they don’t ever change, it’s always 12-16 for a moderate result and 17+ for a good result. I don’t hate it, but I’m not sure how that’s going to play out as you level up. It sounds like your bonuses will increase, but not the targets?
In theory, a low roll still does something small, but that didn’t exactly pan out in practice. Humans in Draw Steel are magic resistant, expressed as a small subtraction from magic damage taken. This is nevertheless enough to blank some weaker magic attacks. Also, skill checks still just fail on a bad roll.
Tactical
I’d say the game’s pretty tactical. Positioning is very important, not so much for flanking bonuses and such but because forced movement is very common. It’s also got popcorn initiative, which forces the players to coordinate their tactics so they can decide who goes next. It does make the GM create maps with interesting terrain on them. More work, but worthwhile.
Cinematic
When I first heard the tagline, I was very curious to find out how game mechanics could be “cinematic,” and after playing the game, I still am! In my assessment, “cinematic” is more a question of presentation, narration, and adventure design than mechanics. I have serious doubts that game mechanics can be cinematic. I think the closest I’ve seen is… maybe Feng Shui? No, not even then, it’s really just the mechanics referencing action movie tropes. Presentation.
Heroic
I’m… not sold on the mechanics being “heroic,” and the main reason is how the game handles failure. As @sunbeargames noted, there isn’t really a failure state for combat other than “everyone dies.” Combined with a low time to kill, this makes the game a lot more lethal than I was expecting, which isn’t particularly heroic if you ask me.
Skill checks being able to just fail also contributes to a lack of heroic flavor. My players rolled very badly on a skill cha - sorry, Montage Test, and they got slapped with some pretty gnarly consequences without actually making any decisions that led to them. That felt very arbitrary and disempowering.
On the plus side, the process of character creation necessarily introduces narrative elements into your character - you have to choose an inciting incident from your background, for example, and you get benefits based on the one you choose. It makes it easy to make a fleshed-out heroic character, rather than a guy with a penchant for violence.
Fantasy
There’s elves and wizards and demons and stuff. Check. The setting is pretty rad, honestly, which makes sense given that Colville has been developing it for decades.
The Module
I don’t have a lot to say in favor of the module. It is a very cool scenario and a great inciting incident - the city the heroes are in is suddenly attacked by a demonic army, and they must escape while saving as many civilians as they can - but it does not fit the game. It’s not heroic fantasy action - it’s dark and violent. The heroes didn’t feel like saviors, it felt like they were just surviving themselves, and only just. This would have been a great scenario for a gritty, dark fantasy kind of system, but that’s not what Draw Steel is supposed to be.
There were some odd plot holes as well. For example, the final battle involves securing a ship to sail the civilians out of the city. But the narration before that battle includes a giant sea monster out in the bay, which the module does not have the heroes deal with. Also, for some reason it assumes that the heroes do not themselves get on the ship and have to find some other means of escape for themselves.
Finally, there is a lot going on in all of these fights. There’s secondary objectives, there’s changing terrain, there’s encounter-specific mechanics… and that’s cool and all, but I feel the need to point out that this is most likely a player’s first encounter with the system. They’ve got enough to worry about just learning the game! Draw Steel is not a lightweight system!
Conclusions
Overall, Draw Steel is a mechanically interesting game, but I don’t think they quite hit their target this go around. That can be fixed in later revisions, of course, but I think MCDM needs to assess whether their design is serving their goals. My enthusiasm for the game is not totally dispelled, but it is certainly diminished.

New draft emoji include 3 proposals I co-wrote!
A draft list of proposed emoji were recently passed through Unicode. This set included three emoji that I co-wrote proposals for: Palm Up Hand, Palm Down Hand and Face With Peeking Eye. These three proposals were written with Gretchen McCulloch and Jennifer Daniel.
These proposals came directly out of the work I did with Gretchen looking at the way emoji act as digital gestures. A palm up gesture means you’ll be able to offer someone cake, a palm down means you’ll finally get a mic drop. And a peeking eye offers an interpersonal meta-commentary we felt was missing from the current set.
You can see details on the full set of 35 recommended emoji and the proposals in this PDF document (Unicode do a lot in PDF rather than on websites!).
For each of the proposals we wrote, you can see the PDF here:
Palm Down Hand/Palm Up Hand (submitted as a single proposal)
Face With Peeking Eye
From here these emoji will be added to the draft candidate list on the Unicode website, and if they pass muster they will be on devices as part of Unicode 14.0 in 2022. Things don’t move fast when you’re implementing permanent standards!
Tumblr media
I’m also looking forward to seeing the hands heart, as well as the heart fingers/money gesture, and the pointing at you emoji. I also feel like I’m going to get a lot of use out of melty face and flat battery.

King Solomon the Wise Part 1
(Take 2)
What wisdom will you bestow upon us today?
Since he decided to drop a bomb on me after I practically finished the first draft :)
Gabriel is Italics
Kimimela is Bold
Verses are Normal
King Solomon is a big figure biblically, having his life primarily discussed in three books, has two Psalms with his name, wrote three canonical books, has two books of poetry bearing his name, is attributed to “The Wisdom of Solomon”, has a legend written about him in the “Apocalypse of Adam”, “wrote” the “Testament of Solomon”, “The Greater Keys of Solomon”, and “The lesser Keys of Solomon.” I am being punished for my hubris. So, because of this Solomon will be a multipart affair :)))). I am unsure of how much of any of these will actually be of use and how far I’m willing to dig my grimmy little fingers into this but that will be a problem for future Gabriel. The webpages I’ve used to gather some information:
http://www.lastgasps.com/Solomon_-_The_Testament_Key_and_Legematon_of_Solomon_(unabridged).pdf
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Solomon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon
(Do NOT at me for using wiki, this isn’t for some English class so I don’t particularly care)
The last two were just for gathering some information of where he appears in the biblical canon and it turned out it was much worse than I realized since he also has other books about him or written by him. Everything I quote will be directly from the pdf file which is a transcription of The Testament of Solomon, The Greater Keys of Solomon, and The Lesser Keys of Solomon. This particular essay will only mention The Testament of Solomon, which is the first 35 pages of the pdf. There is a good chance that this may later be revisited and edited based on what Obey Me decides to throw at me, since, ya know, already doing this a second time cause Obey Me Solomon is a coward while cannon Solomon is,,,wild.
*Note: even though I am using the Testament of Solomon because it is important in understanding and explaining Solomon in Obey Me, it is not considered a biblical canon. In fact, even though it’s said to be written by him, it’s debated on when it was actually written. Even in real life Solomon is shady.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testament_of_Solomon
Well, let's get to it then.
MAJOR OBEY ME SPOILERS UNTIL CHAPTER 36
King Solomon the Wise Part 1
What wisdom will you bestow upon us today?
The Testament of Solomon is about King Solomon forcing demons to follow his orders in the construction of the First Temple. He was given a ring by God, delivered to him by the Archangel Michael, that would allow him control over any demon. The majority of the text describes the demons brought before him, and who they are weak to (usually the name of an angel that when used forces them to leave). While some of the demons mentioned are important to mention, they will not be discussed in this essay. Instead, we will look into prophecies stated by demons, and some events that transpired with King Solomon.
Page 2, paragraph 5
(In reference to a child being attacked by a demon nightly)
"Now when I Solomon heard this, I entered the Temple of God, and prayed with all my soul, night and day, that the demon might be delivered into my hands, and that I might gain authority over him. And it came about through my prayer that grace was given to me from the Lord Sabaoth by Michael his archangel. [He brought me] a little ring, having a seal consisting of an engraved stone, and said to me: "Take, O Solomon, king, son of David, the gift which the Lord God has sent thee, the highest Sabaoth. With it thou shalt lock up all demons of the earth, male and female; and with their help thou shalt build up Jerusalem. [But] thou [must] wear this seal of God. And this engraving of the seal of the ring sent thee is a Pentalpha."
In Obey Me chapter 2 part 2 Lucifer says to MC “Seeing as you’re both human, it’s fine if you associate with him, but know that he can’t be trusted.
He may be a mere human, but he has a ring imbued with wisdom, and he wields powerful magic. He’s the type of man who will try to subjugate even a powerful, greater demon if he gets the chance.”
So we do know that Solomon of Obey Me has the same ring that King Solomon was delivered to him by Archangel Michael.
Obey me chapter 29-5 Solomon says “It’s the ring of wisdom. Made from brass and iron. I got it from Michael long ago. It was at a point in my life when I was a bit lost and unsure what to do. That was when I met Michael, and he gave it to me. When I put this ring on, it granted me the power to control demons.”
While MC has yet to meet Michael, he is a named character in game. We also know that Solomon has been to the Celestial Realm before (chapter 23-5, Solomon to Mc, “Well, looks like we made it here in one piece, huh? This is actually my second time in the Celestial Realm.”), and while it doesn’t state that King Solomon has been to heaven, it is important to note because this shows that Obey Me’s Solomon has a close relationship to the Celestial Realm the same way King Solomon had to God. King Solomon was able to control demons (keep in mind, by force, not through pacts), with a ring, while OB Solomon “has a ring imbued with wisdom, and he wields powerful magic.” King Solomon’s ring has the power to lock up demons and use them with force, and Lucifer states that “He’s the type of man who will try to subjugate even a powerful, greater demon if he gets the chance.” (Which he in fact has but alas, that’s a different essay).
Note: Chapter 29-5 Solomon says he originally had to force demons to obey him
“Anyway, I’m not sure if it’s because I had to use force to get them to obey, or because I expended more magical energy than necessary…
“I mean, nowadays I can do that sort of thing with no problem at all. But not then.”
On pages 18-19 King Solomon is told a prophecy by a demon he gets under his control.
Pages 18-19 paragraph 65
“I used the seal of God, and the spirit prophesied to me, saying: "This is what thou, King Solomon, doest to us. But after a time thy kingdom shall be broken, and again in season this Temple shall be riven asunder; and all Jerusalem shall be undone by the King of the Persians and Medes and Chaldaeans. And the vessels of this Temple, which thou makest, shall be put to servile uses of the gods; and along with them all the jars, in which thou dost shut us up, shall be broken by the hands of men. And then we shall go forth in great power hither and thither, and be disseminated all over the world.
And we shall lead astray the inhabited world for a long season, until the Son of God is stretched upon the cross. For never before doth arise a king like unto him, one frustrating us all, whose mother shall not have contact with man. Who else can receive such authority over spirits, except he, whom the first devil will seek to tempt, but will not prevail over? The number of his name is 6442 , which is Emmanuel. Wherefore, O King Solomon, thy time is evil, and thy years short and evil, and to thy servant shall thy kingdom be given.””
From the information that can be gathered from this and Obey Me, we do know that both King Solomon and OB Solomon have built a temple. In Obey Me chapter 29-5 Solomon mentions a “large house” he built. “The first time I put multiple demons under my control, I was trying to build a house. Let’s just say it was a bit larger than your average house.”
In the Testament of Solomon, King Solomon is actively getting demons under his control while the Temple is still being built. In the beginning of Obey Me Solomon already has all 72 demons under his control (This is Stated in a Devilgram Guided by Desire) and says that he had once built something long ago (big house my ass). Because of these two factors we can assume that this has already happened, at least in part.
Theory time (I guess look away for potential spoilers for later into the story?)
I believe we’ve already seen the temple built by OB Solomon, in fact we have been there multiple times. Where could we have possibly visited that would’ve been King Solomon’s temple?
Lord Diavolo’s castle
So we do know that Solomon from Obey Me built something but why would it be Diavolo’s castle? What could possibly suggest that?  (this also wouldn't be the first time a human structure ended up in the Devildom considering the story about the House of Lamentation)
“And the vessels of this Temple, which thou makest, shall be put to servile uses of the gods”
I cannot say with certainty who the vessels are for sure in this sentence but my two guesses could both work in this situation.
It’s talking about King Solomon specifically or
The demons under his control
(I’m pretty sure it’s the second one when discussed in The Testament of Solomon)
Technically, in the case of Obey Me at least, it could be both of these. We know that OB Solomon was already picked for the exchange program when it was first suggested. This could have been because he is referenced as the “the most powerful sorcerer in the history of mankind.” by Satan in chapter 2-A, but it could also be because he’s already working under Diavolo. We know that he has been working with Diavolo because in chapter 28-8 Diavolo has to leave your discussion early because of urgent business and instead of taking Lucifer he asks Solomon to go with him.
(Diavolo) “There’s no need for you to come along, Lucifer. Solomon. Would you come with me?”
(Solomon) “Wait, you want me to come along instead of Lucifer…? I don’t mind, but…”
(Diavolo) “Wonderful, let’s go. Take care, Lucifer. And you too, MC.”
Chapter 28-C Lucifer and Diavolo have a conversation about Diavolo taking Solomon and not him
(Lucifer) “Where did you and Solomon go yesterday, and what did you do there?”
(Diavolo) “...It still isn’t the right time for me to share that with you.”
If it’s the demons under his control this could still play into the fact that he has to listen to Diavolo, since he controls the demons with his ring, Diavolo Controls the demons via Solomon. We do know of two demons that have been named in Obey Me being under Solomon’s control that are both technically under the control of Diavolo too. In chapter 2-A Asmodeus says “Take Solomon and me, for example. We’re in a pact together already, right? ...Oh yeah, and he’s got one with Barbatos, too.” Asmodeus is one of the seven student council members that work under Diavolo, and Barbatos is his servant that directly works for him and follows his orders. (Boy I can't believe I missed this to be honest in the SECOND chapter)
“Shall be put to servile uses of the gods”
While Diavolo isn’t technically a god, he is a very powerful demon, and is the prince of the Devildom. Even though we don’t know many details about his father, it is possible he’s either strong enough to be considered a god, or is a self proclaimed god. Remember kiddos! Lucifer may be the avatar of pride, but every demon is a prideful bastard!
“Wherefore, O King Solomon, thy time is evil, and thy years short and evil, and to thy servant shall thy kingdom be given.”
This sentence plays into the last part and the fact that I’ve been suspicious of OB Solomon since the second we were introduced to him. You can’t tell me he’s not evil. I will bite you. What evidence do we have to suggest that OB Solomon is evil though? Couldn’t he just have an evil smile and actually be a good guy? Good question! No.
When you’re first introduced to OB Solomon after he picks up MC’s DDD after they dropped it (i have a whole other theory about how he did something to it when MC wasn’t looking but that is just based off gut instinct and my trope sensor going off and i have no proof so i sit here in a silent scream). When he leaves Lucifer mentions how he can’t be trusted.
2-2 “Seeing as you’re both human, it’s fine if you associate with him, but know that he can’t be trusted.
He may be a mere human, but he has a ring imbued with wisdom, and he wields powerful magic. He’s the type of man who will try to subjugate even a powerful, greater demon if he gets the chance.”
“But Gabriel! Lucifer’s a demon! Of course he wouldn’t trust someone with power like that!” Neither do I. While that is true, it’s important to note because Lucifer at this point doesn’t particularly care about MC, but still makes a note to point out his distrust of Solomon. Lucifer has been alive for a very long time and has not at any point been shown to be an idiot, not to mention he’s also the avatar of pride, someone with that much pride isn’t going to admit distrust about someone, to someone they barely know unless it’s a big deal. These two factors show he has the intelligence to know that someone isn’t trustworthy, and the fact that he would admit it even though he is the embodiment of pride, raises red flags.
2-A “Now, now, I’m not like you demons. I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t accuse me of behaving like one. I am but a simple human, an innocent lamb.”
(Satan) “I’m surprised you can say that with a straight face, considering you’re the most powerful sorcerer in the history of mankind.”
After Solomon says he’s completely innocent and a simple human, Satan calls him out on it. This could be argued that Satan was specifically talking about him being a simple human (which is a fair argument i’ll admit) but i personally don’t believe that’s the case for two reasons. The first one is that Satan is very intelligent and would know about Solomon’s power and ability and no competent demon will completely trust a human like that. The second reason is the wording Solomon uses.
“Now, now, I’m not like you demons. I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t accuse me of behaving like one. I am but a simple human, an innocent lamb.”
This wording alone raises red flags because, let’s be honest here, no one who’s innocent calls themselves “an innocent lamb” that’s reserved for people hiding something that makes them in fact, not an innocent lamb. Not to mention the “Now, now, I’m not like you demons.” reads like someone who goes “I’m not like other girls” and it’s like yeah you are, there’s nothing wrong with it but now you’ve made an ass outta yourself so like, congrats I guess.
7-7 (Mammon) “And it’s not like Solomon and Satan and me realized we’ve got shared interests and common goals because Solomon wants some magical items that belong to the Demon King…”
Solomon wants something from the Demon King’s castle, that much is obvious, but what is he looking for and how does this make him evil?
6-4 (Beelzebub) “The grimoire Luke is holding has the power to control a demon-to make him do anything, even if it’s in violation of a pact. Everything that we are rides on that book. We can never allow it to be stolen under any circumstances.”
Look, you don’t drop a bomb like this unless it’s going to happen later on.
“But Gabriel!” you say, “You said that his ring was all controlling of whatever, what could he possibly need that book for?”
(I’ll being coming back to the second half of the sentence “Wherefore, O King Solomon, thy time is evil, and thy years short and evil, and to thy servant shall thy kingdom be given.”  but i have to discuss something else first)
Page 34-35 paragraphs 129-130
“And when I answered that I would on no account worship strange gods, they told the maiden not to sleep with me until I complied and sacrificed to the gods. I then was moved, but crafty Eros brought and laid by her for me five grasshoppers, saying: "Take these grasshoppers, and crush them together in the name of the god Moloch; and then will I sleep with you." And this I actually did. And at once the Spirit of God departed from me, and I became weak as well as foolish in my words. And after that I was obliged by her to build a temple of idols to Baal, and to Rapha, and to Moloch, and to the other idols. I then, wretch that I am, followed her advice, and the glory of God quite departed from me; and my spirit was darkened, and I became the sport of idols and demons. Wherefore I wrote out this Testament, that ye who get possession of it may pity, and attend to the last things, and not to the first. So that ye may find grace for ever and ever. Amen.”
You like how he blames her even though he was just horny even though he claimed to have 700 wives and 300 concubines? All men are idiots in the bible, I swear. (He had one job)
King Solomon let his new wife convince him to worship her gods and build temples in their honor which angered the Jewish/Christian God, and caused him to abandon King Solomon. When God left him, King Solomon didn’t just lose his God, he became weak, foolish, his spirit was darkened, and then had to deal with all the demons left with him. What could he have lost to make him weak and also now stuck with these demons that were under his control before? His ring would have had to stop being powerful enough to properly hold them. Now, biblically, it probably meant permanent, as in, he has zero control or now they have control over him. In the context of Obey Me, it would be a different take on this, because we obviously know he actively has pacts with 72 demons. I theorize that instead of having full control like he would have with the ring, he lost that and instead had to have control via pacts. So in Obey Me, the ring still works to an extent, but now it actually takes him magic and wisdom to control them instead of being able to do it at will because of God.
Edit: We do know that he did struggle with muscle pain when he first used to control the demons, and he’s unsure if it was because he had to force them to obey or over used his magic. Which could also suggest that he did actually force them into pacts before he was left.
“my spirit was darkened”
His soul would have darkened after this transpired. That “innocent lamb” comment was probably very much a joke to him, because he is very much aware of who he is. This also explains why Lucifer is suspicious of him; his soul isn’t exactly pure.
“I became the sport of idols and demons.”
Having 72 demons under your control, and then suddenly having God not in your corner anymore can definitely put a small damper on things. He went from having no demon able to talk him into anything, to having 72 right in his pocket wanting a piece of his mind and being able to.
Okay, so now that this has been mentioned, lets go back to the sentence “Wherefore, O King Solomon, thy time is evil, and thy years short and evil, and to thy servant shall thy kingdom be given.”
Who were King Solomon’s servants?
:) Well, there was about 72 of em
(Note, in the Testament of Solomon it doesn’t name all 72, later ones are mentioned in the other books but everyone says King Solomon and his 72 demons, I’m not about to confuse myself and everyone else because he had less than that in his Testament)
So, now King Solomon is under the influence of a bunch of demons, and was told that this temple he had built was going to be given to his servants, which were demons, and to top it off his ring isn’t quite working right, now what? Remember what I said about Diavolo’s Castle being the First Temple? That’s what.
Considering everything OB Solomon has eluded to with him being THE King Solomon (he straight up called himself King Solomon the Wise, it doesn’t get more obvious than that) and all the information that has thus far been presented in general, it’s safe to say he’s not a reference to King Solomon, but is King Solomon (In Chapter 36, brand new when this was edited, he says he is  very old. I took satisfaction at calling him an old man.). Then taking into consideration the information that has been used specifically from The Testament of Solomon, it makes sense that this information could’ve been used within the game. The First Temple is very important to the story of King Solomon, and Diavolo’s castle has been an important story element within the game too. Then we have the relationship between OB Solomon and Diavolo that seems like a weird professional dynamic. To me, there seems to be information pointing towards his castle being The First Temple.
“to thy servant shall thy kingdom be given”, King Solomon’s servants were technically demons, so his kingdom would be given to the demons. And all the demons, at this point in time, are under Diavolo’s rule, so therefore, OB Solomon’s kingdom is now his. He lost his temple to Diavolo’s father, but because he’s sleeping, Diavolo is in charge.
“Okay so why did you include the whole grimoire bs?”
I’m glad you asked!
Because I needed that in the back of your mind when I discuss a future essay! :)
(I wanted to put it in this essay but it’s gotten way to long so it’ll be talked about later)
Hopefully I tied up loose ends cause otherwise I might just make zero sense hahahaha.
Summary: This essay definitely went a completely different way than I imagined anyone expected, including myself. Solomon sucks, he’s evil, I called it the first time i met the guy, he got bad vibes all over. God I just feel like there’s so much I want to say about this man but like, all of it is just conjecture and there’s a good chance I make zero sense but at this point it's too late ya know? God, I hate this man so much.

Note
1/2 i've got some writing questions for you, if you're up for answering, because i’m curious and you seem like a Real Writer: 1) do you use betas? 2) what exactly are betas supposed to do? i always figured they just checked for like grammar and stuff. megan @foxmagpie is betaing for me and she's done her very best to help me with figuring out my outline and character motivations and i always figured that was a bonus because she's a sweetheart and can see i'm a baby who knows nothing about what
2/2 she’s doing, but the writing asks going around made me start thinking maybe that's actually more standard?? 3) also, i know you're being traditionally published (btw congrats!!), so how different is a fic beta from an editor? thank you in advance if you decide to answer!! :)
Thank you for the congratulations, and of course!
This got a little long, so I’m dropping it behind a cut.
1. Do you use betas?
I used to! I bounced around a few betas when I was a new writer, and then I met Melissa who I had a terrific creative relationship with for about five years? We’re still good friends, but she’s not in fandom anymore and decided she didn’t really have the time to beta anymore after she graduated from college and became a vet. It sort of worked out perfectly, because that was around the same time that I quit writing fic (something I’ve obviously come back to, haha).
I don’t use a beta currently, but I do sometimes talk plot / storyworld things through with @foxmagpie or share bits and ask for her opinion / if what I’m trying to get across comes across.
2) what exactly are betas supposed to do?
It’s entirely up to you and your beta! They can just do grammar and punctuation. I know some betas who just check for Americanisms, Australianisms, Europe-isms, I know some who are hands on with workshopping a story, some who predominantly cheerlead, some who provide very detailed feedback and suggestions, some who provide very little, it all just depends what you, the writer, want, and what the beta is prepared or able to give.
It’s why I think every writer-beta relationship – no matter how close you are as friends – should start with a conversation about parameters and expectations.
If you just want your fic proofread for grammar, that should absolutely be flagged by you, the writer. If you want feedback on plot, characterisation, etc. that should be flagged too.
I don’t tend to beta that much really, just because I’ve worked as a professional editor for many years and have been involved in a lot of writing workshops where you’re often workshopping multiple stories a week, and I find it really hard to turn off that part of my brain. As a result, when I do beta, I tend to do a condensed version of a full edit which includes a structural edit (broad story feedback and questions about world building, characters, etc), a copyedit (this is grammar plus sentence and paragraph structure, word repetition), fact checking (hence the glass bowl debate, hahaha), and write up a page or two on broader feedback for the author overall i.e. patterns in their writing, areas to improve, areas they do really well in, etc.
This is obviously incredibly vigorous (and will take me usually a whole day or even two days - which is something I have to signpost when beta’ing too as I’ll need to have a day free to do it), and not something most betas do (as it probably should be, haha, fanfic should be fun after all). This sort of edit though is (hopefully) really about growth and improvement and challenging the writer to level up, so to speak. The writer definitely needs to be ready for it, and Megan was, which is how I ended up doing this for chapter 7 and now chapter 8 of Delinquents.
Again though, this was something she and I negotiated and worked out that she wanted, and I was actually excited to do, because I love Megan’s writing, and if I could help her be more happy with it and grow and feel like she was growing, I’d be honoured to do that!
If that’s not what she’d wanted, I wouldn’t have done it the way that I did it.
As for Megan helping you with the outlining and character motivation, that is something that’s very sweet! Writing at that point can be really challenging, and while there are a lot of betas who talk through that sort of thing, there are a lot of betas too who only look at things after a draft is written as well. Having feedback and someone to talk to about a story in the early stages, particularly during outlining, can be really helpful and can save you a lot of issues down the track, because if you’re unsure of motivations and what’s propelling your characters through the story, it can often ground your writing to a halt.
One of the best bits of writing advice I ever got was to constantly be asking your story three questions.
1. What does my character want?
2. What (or who) is standing in their way stopping them from getting what they want?
3. What’s my character going to do to overcome it?
Take these as literally or as broadly as you like, but those questions are really helpful at identifying what the narrative thrust of your story is at both a broader and scene-based level. :-)
3) How different is a fic beta from an editor?
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this also varies, haha. It depends on what the beta does and what that process looks like.
Like I said, I more or less do a condensed version of a full edit when I beta, but in traditional publishing (and what I’m going through at the moment with my publisher for my novel), the rounds of editing will usually be done by different people, so you get different opinions. So just to reiterate, a full edit involves:
Round 1: Structural Edit. This is done usually by a senior editor and involves broad feedback on the story and can include anything from scrapping characters to rearranging plots to changing settings. It usually includes a lot of questions which are designed to challenge the writer’s narrative choices or deepen understanding of story.
Round 2 & 3: Copy Edit. This is usually done by a junior editor (and they usually do it twice (or even more than twice if it’s a difficult manuscript or author) - so once, then the writer works on the changes and sends it back, then the editor does it again to the new draft), and is a closer look at the story. It rarely involves major story changes, and instead is focused on individual scenes, paragraph and sentence structure, and often character motivation or settings in specific scenes, as opposed to the broader story.
Round 4: Proofreader. At a big publisher, this will usually done by a contractor outside of the publishing house so that it’s a very fresh reader who’s unfamiliar with the story. At a smaller publishing house or a magazine / journal, this’ll be done by an editorial assistant, intern or even the junior editor again. This is strictly grammar and punctuation.
Round 5: Final proof. This goes back to everyone - the author, the structural editor, the copy editor and the proofreader, and is usually a PDF of the typeset pages, so everyone has one last chance to make minor changes before it goes to print.
So yes! A long process, haha.
I’d say most betas do a little bit of a structural and copy edit, but are predominantly proofreaders? Although, once again, it really just depends!
I hope this is a help, and feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

Tech Review for Writers: reMarkable2
I got myself a piece of interesting tech this year in hopes it would get me from out in front of a computer screen more often. Meet the reMarkable2, a distraction free (i.e. it’s not connected to the entirety of the internet) e-ink tablet workhorse that’s easy on the eyes.
The reMarkable2 Tablet
First things first. The reMarkable2 tablet is not for everyone and your average person probably won’t find it the least bit useful. So let’s talk about why you don’t want this tablet first.
reMarkable 2 is not for you if:
– You want an eReader.  eReaders have a VERY DIFFERENT function than the reMarkable2. Yes, you can read PDFs on a reMarkable, but it’s more for *marking up* a PDF and commenting in the margins of a PDF. Not just reading. eReaders like Kindles and Nooks often have built in dictionaries, ways to bookmark pages or passages of text, etc…  that the reMarkable2 doesn’t have. You can search your documents for specific phrases and words and also highlight things in a light gray, but if you’re just looking for an eReader, I suggest a Kindle.
– You want a full functioning tablet that you can put apps on and surf the web with- If you’re looking for a full functioning tablet, you’ve missed the whole point of the reMarkable2. The main point behind reMarkable2 is so you can go to your creative place (wherever that may be) and brainstorm, free from ALL distractions. You can’t stop to surf FB or your Twitter feed on a reMarkable2, thus making it more likely you’ll stay on task and get more done.
– You want something with color so you can highlight because what you really want is a fully functioning ebook reader or tablet. This tablet is really more of a no frills brainstorming and note-taking tool for entrepreneurs, professionals, academics, and creatives (including engineers, writers, musicians, possibly artists if they like to sketch in black and white) who use a lot of black pens and plain paper.
I bought the tablet for the following reasons (which I wrote down BEFORE I received the device):
– I wanted an electronic notebook (not a tablet). I’m one of those people who goes through 3 packs of sticky notes every month, and countless notebooks every year. I am constantly jotting stuff down to keep myself focused and on track while running my own business and helping out at the family business.  My notes can be anything from putting together presentations, classes, and meetings, to extensive to-do lists for the day. Sometimes it’s just me keeping track of sales figures. As a result, my desk is always filled with papers and notebooks and I’m constantly searching for shit. The electronic notebook cleans up all this clutter and helps me organize my brain. (Have you seen my brain!? It’s a mess in there.)
– I  like to write freehand, especially when I’m plotting the next book or writing a blurb, or even writing a chapter – and it must be distraction free. This is something only fellow authors will understand. The fact that the reMarkable2 can convert handwritten notes to text sent via email has me excited because, if I’m lucky and it works, I won’t have to go through and transcribe all my handwritten notes. It basically saves me time by eliminating a step. I can copy/paste the note from my email into the appropriate file on my laptop. This will also save me the clutter and weight of carrying countless notebooks.
– I am involved with projects that require me to sketch out ideas for marketing and/or artwork. I do have tablets that can do this, but nothing that does it *well*. The closest is my Surface tablet, which can do a lot of things, but it still doesn’t feel like paper or allow me the fine detail paper allows. I’m hoping this tablet is a bit more responsive in this area. – I am forever printing out rough drafts of manuscripts for markup – wasting a ton of paper and toner in the process. All because I can’t edit on a backlit screen. My eyes get tired and I miss too many errors. If I can transfer my PDF drafts to the reMarkable and mark them up there with minimal errors left over, I could save some $$. I am actually estimating that I could easily save the cost of the reMarkable2 in 6 months to 1 year’s time by not having to purchase the paper, pens, and toner I usually go through in that time frame.  Plus, these marked up manuscripts often end up in a stack on my office floor for 6 months to a year after publication.
– I am forever having to read PDFs of laws and regulations for the family business, and while I usually use them on the computer, I sit in front of a computer 8-13 hours a day. I need a non-backlit screen for reading in the evenings just to give my eyes a break.  Yes, I imagine I could do the same with a Kindle paperwhite, but I may just want to jot some notes in the same way I’d mark up a paper copy. I’m still a pen and paper girl. I’m really hoping the reMarkable is my replacement for that (most of the time anyway).
reMarkable2 test to sample the pen styles.
Some considerations I took into account before purchasing:
A lot of customers complained that it took too long to receive the reMarkable or to get support. From all of the research I did, and in reading their website, it’s clear to me that this company caters to academia and businesses. I ordered my reMarkable2 on January 16, 2021, and had it in my hands by January 25, 2021. 9 days. I also ordered it and paid for it through my business. I don’t know if that’s actually why I got mine so fast, but I wouldn’t be surprised. That said, I do think the company should work a little harder to increase their customer service efficiency.
With regard to customer support – the website clearly states it can take up to 10 business days for support to get back to you. And a lot of the things people seem to be complaining about have troubleshooting instructions on the website. Clearly people weren’t going to the website to try to look up their issue through the support FAQs, which likely would have helped them out sooner.  They were just contacting support immediately, and angry when they weren’t getting a response after 3 days, when it’s clearly stated on the website that it can take up to 10 days due to the fact that reMarkable is a small company. But like I said earlier – they would be smart to increase their customer service team.
reMarkable’s folios are a custom fit and really pretty, but a bit pricey. I made the tablet more affordable by skipping the upgrade on the pen, because a friend of mine got the eraser feature and she wasn’t digging it initially (she loves it now), and I purchased a relatively nice folio from Amazon for under $30 (with no magnets – research told me magnets can cause dead spots in the screen of the reMarkable2). You can also just buy a 10″-11″ tablet sleeve and it would work much the same. There are also universal tablet folios that will fit 10″-11″ tablets that are free of magnets and will likely work just fine. All for under $20 bucks — even a few in faux leather. Remember that a case should protect your investment, not just make it *look* sharp.
Right out of the Box.
Right out of the box I set the reMarkable up and started using it for brainstorming. Here were my first impressions:
1. It really is pretty damn close to writing on paper.
2. You can rest your damn hand on the screen and it won’t fuck things up or make it wobble as with traditional tablets.
3. My handwriting actually looks like my handwriting and you have almost the same control with this as you would with real pen and paper.
4. The interface is simple and intuitive and anyone who uses computers and tablets day and in day out will have no issues figuring this out.
Now some thoughts on the features:
Handwriting to Text: As an author who likes to occasionally spend time writing the old fashioned way, one of the things that attracted me to this tablet was its ability to translate handwriting to text. No writer wants to have to transcribe their written notes and waste all of that time. So of course I tested it with my horrific handwriting, vs purposefully trying to be neat, and the reMarkable2 was able to convert my chicken scratch into actual text that I could read. I was able to turn the handwritten notes into a PDF, but I was also able to send the handwriting converted to typed text as the body of an email, where I was able to cut and paste it into any program I wanted. I took it further and wrote 1000 words (about 8.2 pages) longhand. It converted all the pages to text in one swoop and I was able to copy/paste it into my manuscript. While there was a little formatting and editing involved — it was a lot faster than retyping handwritten notes. WIN!
Handwriting for conversion test.
Conversion successful
PDF Transfer, Markup, and Signature: Transferring PDFs to the reMarkable is easy. You simply download the app on your phone and your desktop, and you can take any pdf from either device and import it onto your reMarkable, which you can then markup. I sent myself a slew of PDFs that I had to read and markup. It’s amazing how much more focused I am on a screen like this. I really got the same experience with editing on a digital PDF as I did with editing on a paper copy. My only caveat is that I don’t have more space to make notes since the margins are a bit small on the screen and there’s no “back of the page” to carry notes over to. I can likely manage. Despite that – what a great experience. Goodbye manuscripts all over my office floor!  Hello being able to drag editing work with me wherever I go!
You can also transfer your PDFs that don’t have an electronic signature option to the device, sign them, and send them back. Talk about HANDY since I do that a few times a month by default. This just eliminates the print/sign/scan. Now I just have to transfer it to the device, sign the document, and email it straight back to whoever sent it.
Digital Planners may be something I look into for 2022 because reMarkable actually makes them feasible. I tried a tester digital planner, courtesy a friend, on my reMarkable and I have to say – it offers just as much satisfaction as a paper planner. Plus, you can SEARCH large pdfs. It won’t find search terms in your handwriting, but it will find it in your PDF. That’s definitely a handy feature when you’re working with 500 page PDFs. That said, the tablet saves your place (last page you visited) as you’re navigating a PDF, so no need to search for the place you left off. However, there is no way to bookmark multiple pages.
ePub Reading: suppose I could sideload books as ePubs, but I really have no use for this feature. If I want to read ebooks, I use my kindle or the Kindle App on my tablet or phone. Unless I start doing editing of ePubs or want to check out an ePub format for something?  I didn’t buy this as an eReader, and it is terribly lacking as an eReader. Where the reMarkable excels is as a tool for marking up documents. So my guess is it would be great for that if you have a lot of files in ePub format that you have to go over. You also can’t change font sizes for easier reading. You can zoom in and zoom back out to regular size. That’s it. (And this is another reason this is not an eReader.)
Storage: Storage is a little over 6GB (you do not pay for the reMarkable website cloud-sync). But even with about 15 PDFs (some of them really long) on my reMarkable at any given time, I was only at .38 GB.
reMarkable2 Storage
File System: Like I said earlier – the system is highly intuitive and easy to use. I made folders for my most common notebook uses, then I moved the appropriate PDFs to those folders, and created any notebooks I needed for those folders.
Exporting: You can export as .PNG, .SVG, and PDF.  Handwriting to text can only be sent as text via the body of an email. This is actually great for writing because then you just have to copy/paste from your email into your Word Doc, Google Doc, or Scrivener.
Importing: Imports PDFs and ePubs.
Templates: The templates are great. I generally only use graph paper, plain, and lined paper myself. But I could see how a lot of these would be useful to people. The to-do list is a crappy template just because it requires you to hide your menu to use it (you can’t tick the the checkboxes until you do this). To hide the menu tap the circle in the upper left top of the menu bar. So if you want a partial page to-do list, you can easily make your own checkbox lists using the graph paper option. There are also dot pages for the folks into bullet journaling.
A small sampling of reMarkable2 Templates
Search Feature: You can search within a PDF, but not through your own handwritten text. You must be in the PDF to search it, otherwise you can only search for file names. You can not search across documents for a phrase or word. So if you’re looking for something with the same search capabilities as a laptop or possibly a tablet, you won’t find it here.
Zooming: You can zoom in on PDF documents and write on them while zoomed. However, you cannot change font sizes to make reading easier.
Battery Life:  On days where I used it heavily (about 4-5 hours), I was using around 15% power in a day because I didn’t put it in airplane mode. Three days of 4-5 hours a day use drained my battery to 50%. So me, as a heavy user, not in airplane mode, will likely get 6-7 days out of a single charge. Possibly more since clearly not every day will be a heavy use day. The device does go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity.
Pen:The pens are a bit pricey. I did not buy the expensive pen with the eraser and I’m okay with that. But $60 for a pen is still a bit — ouch.
Pen Nib: I am expecting I will be one of those poor unfortunate souls who will be replacing pen tips every 3-4 weeks during heavy use. Luckily the pen itself doesn’t use batteries. The pen nibs seem reasonable in price, just be sure to order a new pack with your device and when you start that pack, order another as shipping times on those can take a week or two depending where you are and how efficient your mail service is. You don’t want to accidently run out and find yourself without a pen. Yikes.
Security: You can add a password to your reMarkable to keep prying eyes out. But if you’re like me and self-employed, that’s not really an issue. Your remarkable has Wi-Fi, yes, but you can put it in airplane mode to cut the connection. Plus, it only syncs to your cloud storage. There really aren’t any entry points for viruses or people hacking into your device. But then I’m also not a tech person. Let’s just say I highly doubt security will be a huge issue on this thing. Besides, anyone who wants to take a peek at my tablet would likely find themselves bored stiff, unless they like reading really rough first drafts of speculative fiction.  LOL
Backup/Download: You can easily transfer your files back to your computer by opening the app and simply exporting your finished documents, etc… to your computer, backup drive or cloud drive. You can also just email yourself a copy to make it super easy.
My Wishlist:
1. I wish I could add or append new, handwritten pages to an existing PDF. That would definitely solve the space issue. Now, I just make notes in a different file and jog back and forth between the PDF and the notes, which is a little annoying, but doable. One way to solve this issue would be to save all your PDFs to double spaced. It might make markup a little easier. I’ll try that with the next books to go under the editorial knife.
2. I wish there were cheaper alternative covers. My $17 cover looks great and protects my tablet. reMarkable could easily come up with a few additional low-cost choices here. The ultra professionals are still going to buy nice leather folios.
(I may add to this list in the coming weeks, but right now these are the two main things jumping out at me.)
Overall Review Summary
For writers, reMarkable2 truly is a remarkable distraction free device that can help improve your concentration and organization, give you the freedom to write out longhand and convert it to text without the tedious re-typing, and help you mark up drafts with ease. This would probably serve prolific and professional writers more liberally than the writer who takes a few years to pen a book. Plus, it will probably save you a lot of printer paper, toner, pens and notebooks. For business owners/users – reMarkable will likely save you pounds of sticky notes and legal pads, and hours of time transcribing your notes. Plus, it’s a great on-the-go working tool for content creators and people who review a lot of PDFs.

Please? Could you make an imagine thats about how work gets Chadwick? Like, as a full time actor, he must be exhausted having to be reading all the time, interviews, projects... and a full time father as well. So, that being said... what if Chadwick lashed out at Micah? I know that’ll never really happen... but what if he did? What if he lashed out at his firstborn and made her not cry... SOB?
A soft huff escaped from Chadwick's nostrils as he tossed his cell phone on the desk in front of him. The pressures of work were attacking him from all angles and he was finally at his wit’s end. If the email he received from his writing partner didn't;t set him off, the text message with the unfortunate news that he'd have to return to Atlanta for a third round of reshoots was the nail in his proverbial coffin.
While he angrily tapped at the keys on his computer in an attempt to write away his frustrations, Micah's giggling in the hallway drew closer. Soon, she was peddling her way into the downstairs office on her hot pink tricycle.
"Daddy, look! I'm riding a bike."
"Mhmm," he grunted, not bothering to look up from his iMac screen.
Sensing that his attention was elsewhere, Micah used her legs to scoot closer to the desk and peer over the edge.
"Whatcha' doin'?"
"Work."
"What kinda work? The dress-up kind or the boring kind?"
"The kind that means that you need to go find your mama until I'm done. Bye."
"But I wanna be with you."
When Chadwick heard the slight quiver in his daughter's voice, he looked up to find her round eyes staring back at him. Though much of her face was hidden below the edge of the desk's surface, he could tell Micah was frowning by the slight furrow in her brown.
Sighing, he rolled away from his desk and motioned her over. "Alright. Come on over here and sit down."
Micah squealed her excitement before running around the desk to jump into her father's lap. As always, having her in the room made him smile through his tough moment as he kissed her forehead.
"I need you to stay still and quiet while I work, okay?"
"Okay! I promise I'll be the best helper ever."
For much of their time together, Micah was the perfect companion. While she busied herself with “office helper work”, Chadwick continued to cross items off of his to-do list. But, instead of feeling the relief of accomplishment, he grew more frustrated. Every email conversation or new set of information opened the door for anger to settle into his body.
“Micah, stay still,” he requested when he felt his daughter wiggle to the point of shaking his body. Her movements stalled for a moment, but ramped up a second time, adding to the mountain of things bothering Chadwick. “Noelle, stop it!”
When he glanced over to see what had Micah so riled up, he couldn’t contain the anger boiling inside of him. Every paper scattered across his desk was now bound together with copious amounts of clear tape. Further exacerbating the situation, the papers she’d unleashed her crafting abilities on were drafts of a script that he was manually revising. There was no option to request the PDF version of the document. He’d have to wait another week for a new copy to arrive in the mail if the current version couldn’t be saved.
Before he could process what was happening, he shot up from the chair and planted Micah on her feet.
“Micah, get out! Why did you do that!”
The corners of her mouth began to droop, “I was trying to put them back together for you and help.”
“You didn’t! Go in there with your mama and don’t come back!”
The volume of his tirade grabbed Tasha’s attention, leading her to round the corner into the office the second Micah’s breakdown started.
Both parents stood frozen as Micah’s whimpers turned into a full-on sob. She stood frozen in place, making her hurt known to anyone within earshot.
“Are you serious right now,” Tasha questioned as she took long strides toward Micah. “What is your problem?”
“Tasha, I didn’t mean to-”
“Nuh uh.” Chadwick’s attempts to explain fell on deaf ears once CoCo made the decision to ignore him and transition into “mommy mode”.
While she worked to calm the distraught child, he stood there experiencing the moment outside of himself. He didn’t understand how he had allowed stress to make him lash out at one of the most precious people in his life. And, though he knew the issue wasn’t beyond repair, he couldn’t imagine the kind of lasting impression he’d left in Micah’s impressionable mind.
He stewed in guilt well into the night, choosing to remain in the office to avoid the wrath of his wife. Tasha paid a visit as midnight approached to drop off a stack of papers with more attitude than he’d seen in a long while.
“Here. The tape came right off because she’s a child and can’t do that much damage.” The thick files hit the desk with a loud smack followed by a death glare from Tasha.
“Just say what you’re gonna say, baby,” Chadwick sighed as he ran his hands down his face. “I’m sorry.”
“No, you don’t get to apologize to me and make it all better. That’s not how this works.”
“I know. You’re right.”
“Stop trying to make me be quiet! I’m not stupid!” Chadwick knew that his intentions were to show that he understood where he went wrong, not to undermine CoCo. But, he also knew that any further attempts to speak while she was upset would only incense her. So, he quietly sat back in his chair to prepare for the verbal storm.
“Look, I know that work has you stressed. I never want to overlook the amount of effort it takes to do what you do. But, I will not allow you to take that anger and spew it toward our child. Send that shit to them, not her! She is four. So what she taped some papers together? Was that worth the way you made her feel by shouting in her face like she’s some random on the street?”
Chadwick watched his wife rant for several minutes while he silently thanked God he had a partner that was hellbent on advocating for their child, even if he was the offending party.
Midway through her speech, he stood and attempted to grab her hand.
“Absolutely not,” she responded as she drew back and created space between them. “You may not touch me or sleep in our room until you apologize to the person whose feelings you hurt. Her bedtime has passed so you’ll have to figure something out for here and now. There is a spare bedroom and blankets in the linen closet in case you decide to devote more time to work. Ya know, since it has you acting a damn fool. Good luck.”
Knowing that the backlash would be severe still didn’t prepare Chadwick for a total shut out. Long after hearing CoCo dramatically shut the door, he quietly transitioned to the upstairs guest bedroom to contemplate his next move before bed. To apologize for such uncharacteristic and unwarranted behavior, he would need to think completely outside of the box.

3 Things To Notice For Top Quality Architectural CAD Conversion In 2021
Tumblr media
Summary: CAD conversion provides a solid starting platform for future design process. The post enumerates a few important things to ensure top-quality drawings.
Firms providing quality architectural CAD Drafting services realize the importance of producing accurate, top-quality drawings for their clients to have a solid platform for starting the design process. Architectural CAD conversion has gradually become an integral part of the working of building industry over the past few years. The process is especially useful in case of remodeling, renovation or extension projects in an existing structure. A lot depends on the quality of these converted drawings since they could make or break a project right here, if the drawings lack accuracy and precision, you are likely to make some very costly errors during the initial design stage itself. It is, therefore, imperative to judge the quality of your vendor before awarding the project to them, your hard-earned reputation often depends on the outcome of the conversion process.
Be careful while choosing your vendor:
Surprisingly, even many industry people often think that architectural CAD conversion is a simple, an easy task. This is not true. You must make sure that your vendor has the expertise to deal with all the issues that might come up while converting PDF files into CAD (DWG or DXF) drawings. It’s necessary to notice certain things to ensure that the converted drawings are accurate, precise and of top quality.
Efficiently converting CAD entities
PDF is a simple format. Vector graphics here are limited as PDF files do not contain any CAD entities like arcs or circles. If you have tried the conversion process, you would understand that these arcs and circles have to be made either out of many short lines that are difficult to edit or out of Bezier curves, an equally difficult job. To achieve a high degree of accuracy, you must employ highly skilled professionals capable of handling these CAD entities, and use only the top-quality conversion software.
Converting text strings accurately
Converting text from a PDF document into a CAD file is by no means a child’s play. The fact is that PDF files contain words and sentences as strings of individual characters, allowing for very fine positional accuracy of text. Each of these characters has an associated positional and style information. Even a minor blip, this accuracy might get affected during the conversion process causing the resultant text to be illegible or at least inaccurate. The entire conversion would be ruined as a result.
Creation of only one raster image per drawing
You could face a peculiar problem if the conversion software being used for is not up to the mark. Poor quality software often create a separate raster file for each raster image, so you might end with hundreds or even thousands of raster files for a single drawing. This would make storing and later retrieving your drawing nothing short of a nightmare. A good quality software, on the other hand, ensures that there is only one raster file for all the raster images in a drawing.
Architectural CAD conversion plays a vital role in the success of the design process in an era when architects and other industry professionals use CAD software for design and drafting work. You must take care of certain important aspects to ensure that the converted drawings are of top quality so you may start the design job on a firm footing.
