Heeramandi Review: Bhansali Brings A Cinematic Experience To The Small Screen.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, first announced back in 2022, has been touted as Netflix India’s most ambitious and expensive venture to date for any series. It has been on the top end of my and most others’ most anticipated list, and it is finally streaming on Netflix. The 8-episode series is created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also directs all episodes and handles the music for this epic…

Heeramandi Review - Bhansali's Courtesan Games is Luscious But Tepid
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) It’s believed that each grain of rice used in the preparation for Biriyani would be drenched in silver oil in the royal Mughal kitchens as the oil was said to aide digestion and possess aphrodisiac properties. Food history pertaining royal cuisine is filled with curious trivia because all it takes is one wrong ingredient to rob a dish…

Just finished watching the first episode of heeramandi (you either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain) and this is my review WITH VAGUE SPOILERS
Alamzeb either has a mirror related kink or is just narcissistic
Everyone but Mallika has a crush on Cartwright and Cartwright cannot digest that
Mallika and Alamzeb are both rude and think it's superior and cute to be rude, respectively.
Everyone has a crush on Tajdar, including Mallika. (I think it's the hot translucent kurta with cute heart embroidery at the shoulder)
Alamzeb sucks at being quiet but that's not a huge issue, currently.
Consequently, Alamzeb's bestie/servant and Mallika's driver are fucking (in a haystack)(why)
Bibbojaan is the local eldest daughter who has too many responsibilities but is still loved by everyone around her because she developed a facade of being cute and bubbly.
The writers sat to plot down characters and searched up the things that booktok girlies find hot and wrote such scenes for Tajdar. (Him caging Alamzeb against a wall THRICE in the span of two meetings. Wow. Be less subtle, why don't you?) (kuch aur bhi baki ho toh make him say that he wishes he could worship her for their lives. Or make him caress her neck seductively)
Usse yaad aaya, Cartwright resorted to seducing Ustaad ji for info on Mallika??? DUDE. Seduction is an art. Answering your door in a towel isn't a part of that art. You're just asking him to jump your bones. All that naked chest and for what??? Hickeys.
Waheedan is smart. Absolutely love her stealing techniques. And she imagined a make out session with Cartwright within 3 minutes of meeting him. Fellow delulu girlie.
Lajjo has an alcoholism issue but she's got no issues on speaking facts. Alamzeb cannot be a shayra brother she needs to hone her skills
The casual child trafficking in this show is something that i don't have words for and hence I saved it for the last. It's honestly jarring how easily SLB mentions it. But as a writer, I get that he's trying to show how small of a thing it used to be at the time. Perhaps the trauma could have been explored more
I think we're seeing the show mainly from Alamzeb's pov and hence it's a little more rose tinted. Idk. Will find out

Academia
I studied Korean for an hour. Took this lesson. It's in Hindi, really incredible to build a base in another language if the lesson is in your language, which doesn't happen as often since most of them are in English.
I studied Races for Human Geography for another 30 minutes. I'm hoping to increase my time here from tomorrow and make some short notes for last minute revision.
I read 20 pages of Babel by R. F. Kuang. The story is getting interesting gradually.
Non Academia
I watched this review of Heeramandi. He talked about a lot of aspects that I agree with but I also liked Sonakshi's acting here. She was powerful and charismatic, loved her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish to eat a lot of different types of junk food. But I also should start focusing on my health. I think I'd just have to do with the pictures of cakes instead of the actual ones.

*clangs bowl* heeramandi review gogo styles pls uparwala bhala karega
love being a hater (brainrot) with an inkling for the arts
sonakshi is practically the only thing keeping it together. i continued past episode one because she raised one eyebrow aur meri patloon dheeli ho gayi. the grace and fierce screen presence she has is absolutely amazing. im so so so here for sonakshi sinha dark grey role that plays to her strengths. bandi me kya bawaal machaya
bhansali chacha apne niece ko dhang se direction karein bas yahi khwaish hai meri. my god she has the exact same expression for every single life event (and this show has SO MANY fucking things happening. she really has an ipad face good lord. matlab poker face for everything? and i thought slb was a perfectionist of a 100 takes.
manisha koirala is an absolute dagger in a gorgeous sheath. sirf uska character actually sochke likha hai, like not just with short term, immediate gratification.
aditi my ex-roman empire.... girlie she finally did more than a pretty face and im feeling so vindicated. why doesn't she do more of this ughhhh. im so here for richa chaddha ka cameo. kya dhamaka mast. beautiful beautiful beautiful!!!
slb really loves to flaunt his knowledge and expertise in the realm of aesthetics, but even that feels very umbrella like. if you're doing pre-independence era, there's like SO much to world building (the concrete infrastructural kind) that wasn't even given much consideration. and like yes this show about heeramandi, but there's definitely more to lahore in the 1920s to 40s than a sepia filtered marketplace with everyone in anarkalis and a few antique things to make it a set.
the plot is quite predictable but it serves it's purpose. every episode seems to be written to be character centric. i still end up longing for more. im obviously not an expert in the field, but he really does love to romanticize the fuck out of being a tawaif but at the same time keep tragedying them. im pretty sure muslims wouldn't live, talk, walk, dress and impress the way he's done it....
bro (bhansali) really needs to be shaken. it's very interesting when u let him cook (marinate).

Heera Mandi: Diamond Bazar - Bollywood Series Review
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s HeeraMandi currently playing on #Netflix is visually expansive, lyrically haunting, emotionally captivating, and verbally mesmerizing with a rich storyline. Set in 1920s pre independence India, this 7 episode series has woven the struggle for independence while telling the story of the lives of tawayffs (courtesans). They weren’t mere prostitutes. In fact, in…

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’s casting director opens up about casting Sharmin Segal in the web-series; says, “Casting is purely done based on the script and the director’s vision.”
After the release of the magnum opus, the show received rave reviews but Sharmin Segal experienced extreme criticism for her acting chops, especially in emotional sequences where audiences criticised her for maintaining the ‘same expressions’ throughout the show, further accusing Sanjay Leela Bhansali of nepotism since Sharmin is his niece.
Tumblr media
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar featuring an ensemble female lead cast revolves around the lives of courtesans set in the pre-Independence era. While the show received love from audiences, many social media users also shared memes and reels criticising Sharmin’s acting, who played the youngest daughter Alamzeb of Mallikajaan aka Manisha Koirala. Addressing the same, the casting director of the show Shruti Mahajan insisted that the casting process was done after much consideration.
In a conversation with India Today, Shruti Mahajan opened up about the casting process saying, “Casting is purely done based on the script and the director's vision. We only want actors who can enhance the project. And ultimately, it all boils down to what the audience expects from that project.”
Touching upon the topic about Sharmin Segal being extensively trolled for her acting where many even referred to it as ‘expressionless’, Shruti shared, “You cannot take things like this personally. You can't please everyone. Also, given the field that we are in, there are all kinds of feedback. One has to take it all with a pinch of salt and move on.”

Not a Heeramandi Review
I am not much of a writer but I really do want to talk about this show.
Chaotic, emotional, stressful and heartbreaking. As I went through the show, a huge part of me was simply in aw of all the beauty and art displayed accross my scene for each scene. But as you get pulled into this mesmerising screen play, you see women - some vengeful, some cunning, some kind and naive , and others just stuck.
It almost felt like watching different versions of a single woman played by different characters. And that is what I found beautiful about the show, the emotions, the pain, the joy - all of it was so euphoric. Like sipping wine for the fist time, so many notes in every sip, unsure of how to feel exactly but my mind knew it wanted to keep drinking.
Something that has been bothering more now than ever is, do men and women see the same world? Or is it just my close minded view of the world? I remember watching this film and having my partner make fun of what was played on the screen with complete disregard to how engrossed i was in the show. I can give him the benefit of the doubt, the lines were over the top and maybe I watched it through my rose coloured glasess.
Something about the way the show captured the chaos that comes with being a woman, had me enamored - and it stung for no one else to resonate this.
Taking my rose coloured glasses off,
There were scenes and moments that didn't quite tie right with the cohesiveness of the film but it is what it is.
