The Institute Book Review

The Institute
Author: Stephen King
Description: Luke Ellis, a super-smart twelve-year-old with an exceptional gift, is the latest in a long line of kids abducted and taken to a secret government facility, hidden deep in the forest in Maine.
Here, kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - like Luke's new friends Kalisha, Nick and Iris, are subjected to a series of experiments.
There seems to be no hope of escape. Until Luke teams up with an even younger boy whose powers of telepathy are off the scale.
Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
Review: The publication of The Institute had completely slipped my radar. Not a whisper of its existence had reached my way before reading it. I can’t help but feel grateful, for the immersive experience of going into it blindly will be something I’ll remember for a long time.
It’s hard to describe how captivating Stephen King’s writing is, and even more so being the first time I’ve had the pleasure to read his works. Though some wording were a bit superfluous, there is no denying he’s a master in his craft. The tense atmosphere in The Institute is woven beautifully into the build-up of each act, culminating into stomach-dropping or action filled scenes. It led me from goosebumps to tears. However, The Institute’s biggest flaw lies within the author’s writing, for the jumping between perspectives at the height of its climaxes threatened my itching fingers to skip ahead.
Apart from its writing, The Institute has an enrapturing story. Though there’s some likeness to the TV-show Stranger Things, it’s much different under the surface. Its focus on the children’s experience, on unraveling the secrets behind the institute, was key for the successfully ensnaring storyline. How the supernatural element is treated was also quite fascinating.
A marvellous read, especially for someone dipping their toes into King’s writing.

Up In The Air
The 1930s saw steady improvements in the fledging airline industry, which catered mostly to major businesses or well-heeled (and somewhat brave) folks who were interested in getting to places relatively quickly. Margaret Case Harriman reported on the many ways one could criss-cross the country by heading to the Newark Airport, the first major airport to serve the New York metro. August 11, 1934…

TMA ENTITIES X DBD KILLERS
Strap in cos this is gonna be a long one. I'm not going to do all 38 at once because that would actually kill me. So I'm gonna do 10 at a time, covering the original killers. I might cover the licences but then it becomes an argument on how much of their OG representations to include.
The vibe is what Entity I think the killers would serve. Not who they'd be victims of. I.E. I think The Legion would be targeted by The Loney but wouldn't serve it. This is the killers as avatars basically.
With all that out of the way, let's get into these justifications, as always if this has been done before or you have your own interpretations please let me know!
The Trapper
The Slaughter

Starting off hard. In DBD lore Evan doesn't want to serve THE Entity so you could argue none, however I think the most suitable TMA Entity would be The Slaughter.
His kills aren't personal, he commited mass murder, before that he didn't hunt individuals, just punished those who stepped out of line. Even then it wasn't to cause death or for cruelty, he killed as a means to an end. On the other side, he still sees people as people, he didn't view them as flesh to abuse and use.
Because of these action pre-realm, and his impersonal use of beartraps, which maim at random, I think he has similar vibes to the Entity of war and apathetic harm. I could see the argument for The Buried because of how he killed the miners, however I have a much better fit for Too Close, I Cannot Breath.
The Wraith
The Buried

Poor Philip. He also didn't want to be a killer, he spent his life buried. He escaped a war-torn country, he worked a dead-end job, and he literally spent years crushing people to death, with his first and final intentional kill being via crushing aswell.
I don't think he fears The Buried, if he fears an Entity it would be The Slaughter because of his childhood, I think him learning about his accidental murders but then immediately lashing out and inflicting that on his guilty boss shows he embraces The Buried. I think Choke is the best fit for Philip.
The Hillbilly
The Flesh

Also another tragic character. Max was defined by his flesh. I believe by the time he's taken into the realm he's truly internalised The Flesh. We see this in his killing style and home map. His weapon is a chainsaw he uses to butcher and rend, and his realm is a farm covered in slaughtered animals and an abattoir. Hillbilly isn't scared of The Flesh anymore, now he wishes to make everything into meat.
The Nurse
The Spiral

I don't think I can keep calling all the killers tragic ...however. Sally also went through the wringer, she lost her husband, worked in an asylum until the things she saw broke her mind and she strangled 54 people. They find her rocking back and forth sobbing, after completely losing her mind.
However she's not just heavily marked by The Spiral, but she also perpetuates it. It's Meta-Lore that Nurse isn't a normal killer, even compared to other teleporting killers she's on another level, she breaks the game formula, you can't loop normally, she truely is not what she seems. Also I can definitely see a Helen Skin for her, add a door opening animation for her blinks and *chef's kiss*
The Hag
The Desolation

I swear they'll start being less sympathetic soon. Lisa honestly just got screwed over. Was she messing with magic beyond our mortal comprehension? Yes. However that is not a crime, just very Jonathan Simms-coded. Anyways Lisa wouldn't serve The Desolation, however The Hag? The Hag was born after Lisa was tortured, mutilated and starved, and when she got her freedom she chose revenge, she called down calamity on the cannibals and reveled in their deaths.
In the trials The Hag doesn't prioritise quick deaths, she slows down gens, she forces you to hunt down hexes. She wishes to prolong the suffering of the survivors that the Entity makes look like her kidnappers. She has become an Avatar of retribution and cruelty.
The Doctor
The Spiral

See I told you they wouldn't all be tragic characters. Herman is fucking Evil. He didn't have a tragic childhood, he was a child prodigy, he was published as a teen, got into Yale, was set up for being a normal person. However, the CIA gave him unchecked access to prisoners and suddenly the Geneva convention was his personal checklist.
Whilst torture is very Desolation-core, he "excelled" in psychological torture, to the point where even CIA torturers thought he was going to far. DO YOU KNOW HOW BAD YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE THE CIA GOING "yo chill". To The Spiral with you Herman, you Doctor David dupe.
The Huntress
The Hunt

I lied the sympathetic characters are back. Good news though, we're not staying here long. She's The Hunt. Duh. She does protect her isolation so you could argue Lonely, however, she's not really got the social development to know what being lonely is, in her mind she's just protecting her territory. The Hunt for you Anna, go forth and prosper.
The Clown
The End

Oh the creepy ones are back. Kenneth/Jeffery is also really hard to place. Because he does a lot of weird shit. He followed the psychopath playbook, killing birds, small animals, then people. He collects FINGERS which he LICKS. This is going to be controversial but I'm gonna put him in The End, I don't like that he shares the same Entity as my baby Oliver, however I think it fits the most.
He doesn't kill for cruelty (Desolation) or the chase (Hunt), but it is personal (not Slaughter), he kills because he just really enjoys killing. He likes killing and ending lives so much he went from track-star to Clown, he collects fingers as mementos. Truely he has a passion for graphic murder. Out of these 10, Clown is the one who enjoys killing the most.
The Spirit
The Web

I'm still salty that Rin is a killer. Glad she's not a survivor though, but I just want my girl to have peace. Rin noticed her family's decline from her mother's health and her school bills, but she didn't confront her father directly. Instead she gets a job to help support the family, she also looks after her mother. Now, this might just be me seeing her as Martin-coded. However, her more subtle approaches in trying to alleviate her fathers burdens seems very Web.
These small changes didn't save Rin though. Her father snaps, he kills her mother and brutalises Rin. In her last moments she begs for control, to not let this be how her story ends, for the power to avenge her mother and kill her father. And something answers. Truely, if Rin was in the TMA world I think it would've been the Mother of Puppets that answered her.
Her gameplay let's her psych out survivors, tracing scratch marks, and ensnaring her chosen prey with Rancor. Lastly her family tree (or family Web if you will) is part of the reason she's in the realm, her convoluted history linking her to The Oni.
The Legion
The Hunt

I tried to limit repeats, however just as Nurse and doctor are so obviously The Spiral. The Legion are just as Hunt as Huntress. Whilst Anna is more akin to Daisy, a lone wolf, the 4 members of Legion are exactly like the Hunt domain of MAG: 176. They look to Frank as their leader, always checking for weakness, when Susie tries to resist stabbing the janitor, they take her hand and guide the knife into the cleaner's throat.
They Hunt together, they're game mechanics include an animalistic frenzy, and they do it for the thrill, the final stop of a past of vandalism, bullying and theft. I think if the Entity hadn't taken them they most likely would've gone down a similar road to the murder club of MAG: 112.
And that's the list! Obviously the argument could be made for all of them to be Web or Desolation as they all serve the same insect-esque dark god, by causing eternal suffering. However that's boring, and a direct cognate to that doesn't exist in the TMA universe (maybe the things that were fear?). If you disagree with any choices lemme know. I'll probs do the next 10 (from Plague to Skullmerchant on the dbd wiki) soon-ish.
Until then, thank you for reading!
< Icons and art came from the dbd wiki and Grace Holsten's tumblr respectively >

TMAGP Re - Designs Part 6 - Celia Ripley
TMAGP S1 And TMA Spoilers below

Design: Ironically, I had an extremely hard time designing her, especially her face. I ended up trying to make her look akin to Alice's opposite. While Alice has round shapes as a base, Celia has sharp shapes. Alice has a punk style, Celia has a cozy corporate style. Alice has long hair, Celia has short hair, etc etc. I did try to work in a lot of symbolism into her design. Her hair is dyed to represent moving on from her past (stolen) identity, and her hair is asymmetrical to represent growth from her past (stolen) identity and to give her a sense that she doesn't quite belong. I also really like the "hair holds memories" trope, so I headcanon that when her identity was stolen by the Stranger, her hair was also cut/shaved. She has a scar over her nose from the Eyepolcolypse, probably from Helen (when she tried to eat her). I like to headcanon that when she and Sam went to visit TMAGP!Helen, her scar burned a little bit, reminding her of the dangers of TMA!Helen. She has sharper teeth as a little indicator of her not quite belonging, as well as her cutthroat nature (I'll get into this in the analysis). She also has a facial mole, as I think it would be interesting for her to have an "identification mark" but not be able to identify herself. She has ghost earrings as a mini reference to Georgie's podcast 'What the Ghost?' and Melonie hosting 'Ghost Hunt: UK.' She has a heart locket with flames on it as a nod to her having the ghost of Agnes Montague in her apartment in TMA. It has a photo of Jack in it. The eye tattoo on her wrist is a reminder of where she came from. It also serves as a reminder of the person was doomed the world (Jon) and tried to save it, as well as the person who doomed her eyes in order to prevent her involvement in the end of the world (Melonie). Her color scheme has bright red in it to make her feel out of place with the rest of the cast and to make it seem like she's trying to fit in. The gold is there because it can fit with both red and green, as a little reference to her being in both the TMA and TMAGP universes.
Analysis: Celia is such an interesting character and very well-written, in my opinion. She started out as the new hire, and hey-isn't-she-from-the -cult with little character involvement. She seemed like she was just there to be Sam's love interest. But oh, was she so much more. She dropped so many hints connecting TMA to TMAGP, and she was the one to push Sam into investing the Institute further. It started out with her investigating alternate universes and a little alchemy. Then, before we knew it, she was namedropping Jonathan Simms and Martin Blackwood. She roped Sam into investigating Basira. She encouraged Sam to go to Gerry's and Gertrude's flat. She brought her boyfriend to meet the woman who had tried to eat her in another universe. I would argue that Celia became one of the main motivators of the plot. After all, it was her plan to get Sam to the portal on Hilltop Road, where the Archivist ended up following them.
Her personality, in my opinion at least, is what would be expected as a "main love interest" - she's smart, she's funny, she's kind, she's understanding, etc etc. However, her motivations her subvert the expectations of her character. At first, we were led to believe that her main motivation was getting home to the TMA!verse. Then we were introduced to her son, Jack. Jack was clearly one of the primary focuses in her life, and he ended up being her primary motivator. She investigated the Institute, and she got Sam to trust her BECAUSE she wanted to stay in the TMAGP!verse with Jack. This led her to take the most drastic measure she has taken so far - throw Sam into the Eyepolcolypse. Remember that she doesn't know the Eyepolcolypse ended. As far as she knew, she was sending Sam into Hell. And yet, she was willing to do it. Even though it would probably kill him. Even though she really liked him. She had to stay with her son. Although Celia said that Sam fell into the portal while protecting her from the Archivist, I theorize that Celia pushed him. Not only was she planning on getting him into that portal one way or another, but she just relived a traumatic experience (via her statement) and was in a dangerous situation (with the Archivist there) leading to a lot of adrenaline and quick, rash decisions. She had to survive, and Jack had to survive. Sam was the one who could help her do that, but only by going into the portal. This is not to say that she's not remorseful, as she clearly is when Alice finds her, bur it's what she had to do to survive. I think she told Alice that he fell with the Archivist to protect not only herself and her relationship with Alice but to protect Alice's image of Sam. He went heroically and not betrayed by someone her loved and cared about, doing something Alice warned him was dangerous.
I think Celia is going to get a lot more development in S2. Here are my theories for that:
1) The guilt is going to eat her up.
Even if she didn't actively push Sam in, she still brought him to the place of his doom. Hell, as far as she knows, she brought him to his death in a hellscape. He was gone because of her. I think this is going to lead to some good conversations between her and Alice about Sam and feeling guilty. Alice couldn't protect him, and Celia plotted to harm him, or at least encouraged him to do dangerous things and brought him to the place he got hurt.
2) The portal is going to demand more.
Like when Jon started feeding from fear, I think the portal is going to demand more from her. She is going to have to feed it more and more sacrifices. I think it would also be interesting if she started Becoming, in a cross between the janitor on Hilltop Road and the Distortion. She slowly becomes a vessel for the portal and, by extension, the fears. As her her grows, it becomes wavey, as if moving on its own with a slight natural glow (almost like Celestia from MLP). Green seeps into her eyes, and they take on a glow. Her skin becomes shiny, and her skin maluble. As she is marked, the fears leave a little relic. Maybe she's attacked by worms and has a scar for the Corruption. Maybe after an encounter with the Buried, her lungs have a little water in them. Maybe she has slightly longer fingers after she encounters the Spiral. I think this could be such a fun concept, especially if you parallel her with Jon! Jon was the person who knew too little too late and brought the Fears upon the world and became their vessel. Celia would be the person who knew it all, lived through it even, yet still brought the Fears upon the world and became their vessel.
3) She's going to continue to feed us information.
I think Celia is going to be vital to the plot from here on out. She is not only going to be feeding us, the Watchers, information and references to TMA, but she is going to help Alice and Gwen get information about what's going on in TMAGP!verse. She will be the bridge between TMA and TMAGP if you will.
I'm really excited to see more of Celia in S2! I'll hopefully be posting Teddy's design and analysis (his will be much shorter lol) soon!

Ramble of the month March 2025: Poirot fan-cast Part 3 of 4
First off, apologies to any readers who have been following my episode reviews of Gotham; rest assured these will be back as soon as I can get fresh submissions to literary agencies done for my autism book. In the meantime, I am still keeping the monthly rambles alive, and this month we’re carrying on with my Poirot film fan-cast. As with part 2, here’s a quick bullet-point summary of the points raised in my part 1 ramble so any new-comers can get caught up;
Agatha Christie wrote 66 novels and 14 short story collections, most of which centred on either former Belgian policeman-turned-private detective Hercule Poirot or elderly English spinster sleuth Jane Marple.
Within in this run of literature, Poirot had 33 novels to Miss Marple’s 14, most of which remain un-adapted to film while British TV and radio have done better.
The Poirot fan-cast is based on the run of BBC radio dramatizations featuring John Moffat as the voice of Poirot; discounting those radio drama using other voice actors and those too short to make a decent film, this creates a 24-film run.
By starting with a first film release in 1980 and making a film every other year, this hypothetical film series would take until 2026 to complete and could include a single actor to play Poirot throughout, while also including other actors in key recurring roles.
Our initial key long-term actors are Brian Cox as Poirot, Anthony Head as Hastings and John Hurt as Inspector Japp.
So far, the run of films has been as follows;
1980: The Mysterious Affair at Styles
1982: The Murder on the Links
1984: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
1986: Peril at End House
1988: Lord Edgeware Dies
1990: Murder on the Orient Express
1992: Three Act Tragedy
1994: Death in the Clouds
1996: The ABC Murders
1998: Murder in Mesopotamia
2000: Cards on the Table
2002: Dumb Witness
Now before we get into the films of round three, a couple of quick reminders. Firstly, I’m not specifying directors like I did in my alternate MCU and DCEU fan-casts, and the films have two dates; the first for production and the second for setting. Second, as of Dumb Witness, we’ve now concluded appearances in our films by Hastings and are in transition from inter-war Poirot to post-war Poirot, who will have new regular supporting characters. So, onto films 13 through to 18 in this fan-cast…
Death on the Nile (2004/1934)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Colonel Race = Bernard Hill
Linnet Doyle = Samantha Morton
Simon Doyle = Matthew Macfadyen
Jacqueline de Bellefort = Keeley Hawes
Salome Otterbourne = Joanna David
Rosalie Otterbourne = Emilia Fox
Mrs Allerton = Helen Mirren
Tim Allerton = Joseph Fiennes
Andrew Pennington = David Ogden Stiers
Marie Van Schuyler = Raquel Welch
Cornelia Robson = Katie Holmes
Miss Bowers = Diane Lane
Mr Ferguson = John Simm
Signor Richetti = Sergio Castellitto
Louise Bourget = Audrey Tautou
James Fanthorp = David Tennant
Dr Besner = Sebastian Koch
Joanna Southwood = Samantha Spiro
Jules = Christian Clavier
Sterndale Rockford = Andrew Robinson
Death on the Nile gets us back to Poirot travelling abroad after a two-film break handling cases in England, and as a result the cast gets a little more varied, especially since I’m not cutting or combining characters like most film and TV adaptations. Plot-wise, this one is a slow burn to the murder, as newlywed couple Linnet and Simon Doyle are stalked on their honeymoon in Egypt by Simon’s jilted ex-fiancé Jacqueline de Bellefort. However, when Mrs Doyle is shot in her cabin while on a river cruise up the Nile, Jacqueline has a solid alibi. Two further murders follow as Poirot investigates, aided by his old friend Colonel Race.
Aside from Poirot, Colonel Race is the only returning character, leaving everyone else to be freshly cast. There is a good mix of well-known names included as we combine a mostly British and American cast with a few actors of other nationalities to best match the characters Christie originally wrote. A few examples include an aged Raquel Welch opposite Katie Holmes and Diane Lane in the Van Schyler party, Doctor Who actors David Tennant and John Simm (Simm having played Whovian villain The Master opposite Tennant’s Doctor), and David Ogden Stiers of M*A*S*H fame. Fans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and of Die Hard will also be pleased to spot Andrew Robinson making an appearance.
Appointment with Death (2006/1935)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Colonel Carbury = Tim Curry
Mrs Boynton = Louise Fletcher
Ginevra Boynton = Kate Hudson
Raymond Boyton = Casey Affleck
Carol Boyton = Sasha Alexandra
Lennox Boyton = Ben Affleck
Nadine Boyton = Leslie Bibb
Jefferson Cope = Hugh Jackman
Dr Gerard = Andy Serkis
Dr Sarah King = Honeysuckle Weeks
Lady Westholme = Harriet Walter
Miss Amabel Pierce = Sophie Thompson
Another film set in Poirot’s travels abroad, this one takes place in the nations we now know as Israel and Jordan, but as the film will be set in the 1930’s like the book it’s based on, these means we’re looking at the region strictly as it was at that time. Regardless, past geo-politics is mere backdrop to the main plot, which revolves around the various people in Poirot’s hotel when he overhears someone discussing the murder of a woman from his room. The likeliest target seems to be the overbearing and ruthless matriarch of the Boynton family, and when indeed Mrs Boynton is discovered dead during an expedition to the ancient city of Petra, it falls on Poirot to investigate all concerned. Unlike the previous film, the cast of characters doesn’t vary much from a smaller, simpler mix of Brits and Americans, so the cast of actors doesn’t vary as much either. However, this makes it no less excellent a cast, with the likes of Andy Serkis, Hugh Jackman and the Affleck brothers being included, not to mention Tim Curry (notable for films such as Clue, Muppet Treasure Island and The Hunt for Red October, among many others). Also featured is Louise Fletcher, who is best known for her roles in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Sad Cypress (2008/1936)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Elinor Carlisle = Lena Headey
Dr Peter Lord = Paul Bettany
Mary Gerrard = Lucy Davis
Roderick Welman = Jude Law
Mrs Laura Welman = Diana Rigg
Nurse Hopkins = Jenny Agutter
Nurse O’Brien = Brenda Fricker
Mrs Bishop = Brenda Blethyn
Mr Seddon = Patrick Stewart
Bob Gerard = Timothy West
Horlick = William Moseley
Ted Bigland = Andrew Scarborough
Mr Justice Beddingfield = Jim Carter
Sir Edwin Bulmer = Bill Nighy
Sir Samuel Atterbury = Colin Baker
Dr Garcia = Paul McGann
Inspector Brill = Timothy Spall
Alfred Wargrave = Robert Glenister
James Arthur Littledale = Nicholas Lyndhurst
Amelia Mary Sedley = Miranda Harcourt
Sad Cypress is a little unusual among Poirot mysteries, and for two key reasons. Firstly, Poirot comes in relatively late in the story, and second, he’s commissioned to try and see if any evidence exists that can exonerate the accused. The story begins with an anonymous letter to the niece and nephew-in-law of Laura Welman, a wealthy heiress bed-ridden after a recent stroke. When Elinor Carlisle (the niece) and her fiancé Roderick Welman (the nephew-in-law) visit just in case, Roderick falls for Mary Gerard, the daughter of the local lodge-keeper. This begins a chain of events culminating in Mary being poisoned, Elinor being arrested and local physician Dr Lord, who is attracted to Elinor, imploring Poirot for help.
Now for those who know the novels wondering why the film run skips over Hercule Poirot’s Christmas to get to Sad Cypress, it’s mainly because it’s one of the BBC radio dramas that didn’t use John Moffatt as Poirot, so it’s discounted because we’re basing these films on the novels that were adapted to radio plays using Moffatt. It also helps reduce the number of stories that need to be covered by films before we hit World War 2 in the timeline. Casting-wise, we’re going predominantly English here, but plenty of names are on the cast that American/international marques would respect, including Patrick Stewart, Jude Law, Lena Headey and Paul Bettany.
One, Two, Buckle My Shoe (2010/1937)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Inspector Japp = John Hurt
Mr Henry Morley = Ben Miller
Miss Georgina Morley = Poppy Miller
Gladys Nevill = Rosamund Pike
Alistair Blunt = Simon Chandler
Mrs Julia Olivera = Christine Baranski
Miss Jane Olivera = Reese Witherspoon
Howard Raikes = Tobey Maguire
Mr Amberiotis = Stelios Mainas
Mr Reginald Barnes = Michael Palin
Mabelle Sainsbury Seale = Dawn French
Frank Carter = Dominic Cooper
Mr Reilly = Liam Cunningham
Alfred Biggs = Eddie Redmayne
Agnes Fletcher = Charlie Brooks
Helen Montressor = Moira Brooker
Mr Selby = Stephen Moyer
Mrs Merton = Pauline Quirke
George = Robert Lindsay
In this film, we get the final appearance of Inspector Japp and the second of two inter-war appearances for Poirot’s valet George (the first having been in Dumb Witness). In this film, Poirot is called to aid Japp when Poirot’s dentist, Mr Morley, is found dead. The initial cause appears to be suicide, but there’s no apparent motive and high-profile financier Alistair Blunt’s presence as a patient complicates matters. Soon it seems as if the crime may be political, but Poirot is not fully convinced. Now this film is mostly British actors and set in England, but owing to Blunt having married into an American family, we get a few American characters to add US acting weight to the film’s US and international box office. Most notable in this small group are probably Tobey Maguire of Spider-Man fame and Reese Witherspoon. However, fans of The Big Bang Theory, Cruel Intentions and a few other things will doubtless recognise Christine Baranski into the bargain.
Evil Under The Sun (2012/1938)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Colonel Weston = John Challis
Inspector Colgate = Neil Morrissey
Captain Kenneth Marshall = Ray Stevenson
Arlena Marshall/Stewart = Rachel Weisz
Linda Marshall = Georgie Henley
Patrick Redfern = Michael Fassbender
Christine Redfern = Keira Knightley
Rosamund Darnley = Minnie Driver
Emily Brewster = Geraldine Chaplin
Carrie Gardener = Michelle Pfeiffer
Odell Gardener = Kelsey Grammer
Horace Blatt = Dominic Keating
Rev. Stephen Lane = Stephen Merchant
Gladys = Michelle Ryan
Mrs Castle = Tamsin Greig
Sergeant Phillips = Andrew Garfield
Dr Neasden = Mark Rylance
Evil Under The Sun combines the elements of a classic Poirot holiday adventure with an English setting in a way that I hope Branagh’s film run might do at some point, though I doubt he’ll stick to the source material as much as I would. Regardless, the premise of the story runs thus; while on holiday at the Jolly Roger, a hotel on an island off the coast of Devon, Poirot learns that two of the guests, famous actress Arlena Marshall (stage name Arlena Stewart) and her “admirer” Patrick Redfern, are having an affair. Worse still, they appear to be doing so under the noses of Arlena’s husband and step-daughter and Patrick’s wife. Poirot fears disaster, and is proven right when Arlena is found strangled in a deserted cove.
In this film, the cast is predominantly British, though we do get a little American inclusion due to a couple of American hotel guests, played by Kelsey Grammer and Michelle Pfieffer. Much of the UK cast also has major international recognition here, especially among a multitude of sci-fi and fantasy fandoms, including the Fox X-Verse, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and by way of Dominic Keating, we also have a main cast member from Star Trek: Enterprise included.
Five Litte Pigs (2014/early 1939/1924)
Hercule Poirot = Brian Cox
Carla Lemarchant/Caroline Crale Jr. = Lily James
Amyas Crale = Tim Roth
Caroline Crale Sr. = Catherine Zeta-Jones
Sir Montague Depleach = Alan Rickman
Caleb Jonathan = Patrick Malahide
Phillip Blake = Martin Kemp
Meredith Blake = Gary Kemp
Elsa Greer = Emily Atack
Miss Cecilia Williams = Olivia Coleman
Angela Blake = Hayley Atwell
Young Angela = Charlotte Spencer
For the last film in this round, we’re not only looking at the last of our films set prior to World War 2, but we’re also dealing with something of a rarity for Poirot, namely the investigation of a cold case. In Five Little Pigs, Poirot is approached by Carla Lemarchant, whose mother was tried and convicted of murdering her father, a famous painter who was having an affair with a younger woman he was painting a portrait of. Carla has just been given a letter her mother wrote to her from prison shortly before her death claiming her innocence; the only claim of its kind, since by all records, Caroline Crale never made any other claims of innocence and appeared guilty. Poirot gathers the accounts of five people who were present for the murder; two brothers, the father’s model, the governess and her pupil, Caroline’s then-teenage half-sister, and from these the truth begins to emerge.
Due to the cold case aspect, the film alternates between Poirot’s present-day investigation and the events at the time of the murder, with many characters from both eras being cast young and then aged up via make-up and/or special effects. The sole exception to this is the character of Angela Blake, where the age dynamics involved require two actresses. The cast is all-British this time round, and much like the cast I’ve put together for Evil Under The Sun, much of the cast has international recognition. Obvious stand-outs in that respect include Alan Rickman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim Roth, Hayley Atwell and Olivia Coleman. So, that’s most of the films in this Poirot fan-cast covered, with only six films set in/after World War 2 left to go, specifically Taken At The Flood, Mrs McGinty’s Dead, After The Funeral, Dead Man’s Folly, Hallowe’en Party and Elephants Can Remember. However, these will be a little way off yet as next month will be Autism Awareness, and in May I plan to do the first half of my Miss Marple fan-cast. Anyway, next time, ta-ta for now.

Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir (January 12, 1822 - August 4, 1900) in 1860 used an electric spark plug in his gas engine, the first internal combustion piston engine. He is generally credited with the invention of the spark plug. Some sources credit Edmond Berger, an immigrant from Togo, with creating a spark plug in early 1839, though records show he did not receive a patent for his device.
Early patents for spark plugs included those by Nikola Tesla (US Patent 609,250 for an ignition timing system, 1898), Frederick Richard Simms (GB 24859/1898, 1898), and Robert Bosch (GB 26907/1898). Only the invention of the first commercially viable high-voltage spark plug as part of a magneto-based ignition system by Robert Bosch’s engineer Gottlob Honold in 1902 made possible the development of the spark-ignition engine. Manufacturing improvements can be credited to Albert Champion to the Lodge brothers, sons of Sir Oliver Lodge, who developed and manufactured their father’s idea, and to Kenelm Lee Guinness, of the Guinness brewing family, who developed the KLG brand. Helen Blair Bartlett played a vital role in making the insulator in 1930. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

First session over--they guessed that the "Doctor" was the Master and I asked if they wanted me to answer if they were right or not, and they said yes.
The thing that tipped Curtis off was the question mark themed outfit--it was meant to be based on late Old Who outfits (like Seven's question mark sweater), but Curtis connected it to Missy impersonating the Doctor from one of her comics.
It took until they knew he was the Master and pointed out the scarf for them to realize that "oh the buckle is a reference to Simm's collar." This led to "2/3 of the party are dogs... Helen you could change that." "Hey, Michael is a cat."
Unsurprisingly they decided to spare the computer bugs but now I have to define the year 6032 for the next session, since they've decided to release the swarm on them and hope its enough to feed them.
They have also come to the conclusion that they want the "Doctor", Oliver, Helen/Michael, and the TARDIS to end up in a weird polycule which is going to be extremely funny.
They met the first of the TARDISes, specifically Oliver's TARDIS (nicknamed "Sleep" so I have a way to easily refer to each TARDIS), who is currently using a desktop theme that I'll describe as "cotton candy walls with a pool of mercury".
Oliver fell in love instantly.
The main thing I need to work out is whether Oliver is a future incarnation of the Doctor (and I need a reason he and Helen/Michael can exist together for an extended period of time), or if Oliver bi-regenerated off of Helen/Michael before they both fob watched (its own brand of convoluted, but that's ttrpgs in a nutshell.)
#rose rambles#olive hell and michael wave#it was fun. they want to do session 2 tomorrow.#which I CAN manage considering my session planning is usually last minute anyways#I remade the campaign concept and first session in a day and a half#One day for the beginning session idea#and the other day to tie it into an overarching plot#Idk. Maybe I'll let them take the bugs to a future zoo or something. The Master's keeping the humans around because the TARDIS likes them#and he's trying to copy the Doctor's modus opperandi ehich means companions#Also he picked them up because they had the bugs. And he wanted the bugs. To lead him to the TARDIS.
