thinking about an alternate season 7 wherein instead of every potential slayer being hunted and then activated, every past slayer gets brought back to life. I don’t really like post-chosen content anyway, but when I do read / look at it the whole slayer academy, everyone’s a slayer thing is really stupid to me ngl 💀
previous slayers, though… nikki wood and xin rong interacting with spike, actually finding out about the slayer before buffy, slayers with different backgrounds and situations and personalities, KENDRA?! I just love it so much.
you’d be able to focus on a relatively small cast of slayers, much like the potentials, throughout the season. this would include buffy, faith, kendra, nikki, and some other american slayers from varying time periods with a couple interesting international characters too (maybe a slayer from ancient greece / rome / egypt, or an anglo-saxon one or something). these are all experienced slayers, so no need to focus on training - it would be more about lore, history and their personal character journeys, assimilating them into society (creating some fun bottle episodes, maybe a day out on the town with dawn and a historical slayer) and trying to figure out why they were all brought back. also, if you want to keep the first as the main villain, then it can look like any one of them because they’re all technically dead, which means you can still have that episode with the dead potential revealing herself as the first and all the mistrust that’s threaded throughout the season.
plus with nikki back, there would be no need for the stupid sleeper agent thing with spike or the ridiculous fight between him and robin. all the same ideas (and the flashbacks to spike’s mum) could still be explored, and in a way better way imo.
I reckon the reason they were brought back would probably be the powers that be (tying nicely into angel ofc) trying to defeat the first. and of course the ending would be this huge battle, as all the slayers from around the world come to sunnydale, and maybe to add some drama they would all disappear and die again when the battle’s done as they have fulfilled their purpose (a classic finale knife to the heart that would have everyone sobbing, especially over nikki and kendra).
there’s also the added thing of like,, I appreciate the show was leaning towards a theme of “hope for the future” with the potentials angle, but literally every other aspect of the season is about harkening back to the past. faith, robin, the first taking the form of previous characters, the high school, the slayer origins, etc etc. so I just think this idea would work so much better with the themes of the season, and tie in really nicely.
and the most obvious perk of this concept is kendra! she was forgotten about so quickly, and this season would really give the writers a chance to redeem themselves for the terrible way poc characters have been treated throughout the show (ignoring what they did to robin. FUCK that but that’s another conversation). I think the show really downplayed how much kendra’s death would have affected buffy, and seeing the two of them interact after buffy has changed so much and kendra’s still the same would be amazing. there’s also the interesting concept that, having been brought back from the dead, kendra still be 17, and therefore closer in age to dawn than to buffy, which could make for some really nice interactions between the two of them. also of course the biggest most exciting thing is having buffy, faith and kendra all interact. they all represent places on a spectrum in terms of personality, and I would LOVE to see kendra and faith interact and how much of a unit they would likely become as a trio.
there’s also the theme of buffy feeling (and being) alone in this season that would hopefully go away, as she would now have dozens of people who truly understand her, giving her a proper support system which I would love to see (season 7 scoobies can actually eat shit btw <3)
so. was this born out of my hatred for insufferable kennedy and the annoying potentials? yes absolutely. do I now want them to rewrite and re-film the entire last season 20 years later? yes absolutely I’m so glad you understand
side note wouldn’t it be sick if in the final battle there’s just this one slo-mo shot where buffy stakes a vamp and through the dust she sees the first slayer looking at her from across the battlefield before she disappears amongst the fight. WHAT it would literally be awesome hello?!
also also other side note sorry but Mother(TM) nikki wood would NEVER kick buffy out of her own house. fuck them kids fr

While everyone is sharing their Scooby-Doo pitches:
Mine would be three parts: Origin, Division, and Journey
Part 1 would be set in Coolsville. The gang would not have met yet and be in high school. The inciting incident is Shaggy sees. A monster. He goes to Velma because he thinks she is emo and knows about the occult. She tells him she's not emo, emos aren't the occult ones, and monsters aren't real, but does wind up helping him investigate. Fred is new in town, having moved in from the West Coast town of Crystal Cove, and is smitten with Daphne, who is already like halfway into investigating a secret society. Episode one ends with Shaggy telling from what the monster he saw was:
"It was, like, a talking dog, man!"
This part would involve a mysterious bank robbery, a mansion where any door can lead to any other, and Flim-Flam, Vincent Van Ghoul and Scrappy being the secret society who guards the Chest of Demons, which only Doos can use to seal demons in and a "13th demon, the one who escaped". It ends when the demon turns out to be a fake that Flim-Flam and Vincent were using to convince Scooby to help guard the chest, leaving the gang divided on if the chest is real, or actually just where the bank money is hidden.
Part 2 would be Shaggy, Daphne, Scrappy, and Scooby on the run with the chest, while Fred calls in a friend from Crystal Cove to help track them down: Marcie Fleach. They are bank rolled by Deacon Carswell, who wants the chest back desperately. This part would end with the gang deciding they have to be on the same side, and to do that they need to know what the chest is. They open it, releasing the demons.
Part 3 would be close to the classic formula. The gang has to go hunt down the demons, and so goes to anywhere in America where supernatural events are being claimed to happen. Sometimes it's a hoax, sometimes it's a demon, sometimes it's an unrelated source of magic. This one would introduce the Hex Girls and bring back Thorn's magic powers. In the end, Deacon Carswell is revealef to be the real 13th Demon, the Creeping One, and the gang have to defeat him in the aforementioned mansion with weird doors.

Building off your pitch for a Scooby-Doo origin.
Daphne at a stuffy high society gala meets Shaggy, he doesn't give a last name and he's dressed terribly. Daphne already wants to be best friends with him. Shaggy is just glad she isn't put off by his lack of social awareness. Ghost attacks and causes chaos, Shaggy is terrified and Daphne is just excited that something cool is happening for once. They want to investigate but lack resources so they go into town to look for help. They meet paranormal expert Velma who wants to investigate to try and prove ghosts are real and trap maker Fred. He just likes traps, Daphne is sold on the new additions. Shaggy refuses to go unless he brings his dog, Daphne let's Scooby-Doo come with. They sneak in, clues are found, and eventually catch the ghost. The ghost is actually a guest who wanted to steal the *generic value object* from the ballroom or something. The mystery gang is formed, paint the van, and ride off into the sunset.
Also if Daphne and Shaggy are rich kids it would be hilarious if Shaggy was actually in a higher social tier than Daphne. Like the Blakes are millionaires but the Rogers are billionaires.
Oh so like.
I think it depends on the continuity because it shifts a little but the Vibes for me in most continuities are Old Money vs New Money
So like Shaggy's family has had money for generations, as implied by that Boo Brothers thing I mentioned where the inherited estate is a southern plantation. Yes I am aware of the implications there and so is Shaggy and he does not like that at all which is one reason he avoids the family money as much as he can.
Daphne on the other hand always seems to have some rich businessman for a father, so it vibes more that he made his own money rather than inherited it. Occasionally continuity will imply older money like in the Loch Ness Monster movie there's a family castle back in Scotland, but it's like. Not always a thing.
And while to /us/ it doesn't really matter they're both rich, to rich people there's a Difference™ and it causes Drama™.

Why Wednesday is NOT a Harry Potter rip-off
Most of the “Hot Takes” about the Netflix series Wednesday are that it’s a shameless rip-off of Harry Potter.  Why? Because there’s a boarding school and supernatural creatures?
Wednesday features Wednesday Addams going to Nevermore Academy, a school for “Outcasts.”  In the context of the show Outcast means monsters or people with super powers.  The school residents include werewolves, vampires, gorgons, and sirens as the main species based cliques. And the Principal was a shapeshifter. Other supernatural creatures in attendance include a telekinetic, an artist who has psychic visions and can temporarily bring his art to life, and a boy who can control bees.  A ghost and a Hyde monster also makes an appearance. And Wednesday, herself, is a seer.
As far back as the 1930s the Addams Family has had witches. Charles Addams, himself, said that Morticia was a witch and he was her creator.  In the 1960s Addams Family show the opening theme song has the line “So get a witch’s shawl on, a broomstick you can crawl on.  We’re gonna pay a call on... The Addams Family.”  Grandmama brewed potions in every incarnation of the family and cursed a man in the 90s Addams Family movies.  Morticia’s sister, Ophelia, had flowers growing out of her head in the 1960s show.  If you think there was nothing supernatural about The Addams Family, you clearly were not paying attention.
Tumblr media
Now, in the show Wednesday, anyone with powers or who is of another species other than human, are called Outcasts.  Everyone else is a Normie. No, this is not a rip-off of Harry Potter’s Muggles.  In role playing games I sometimes had ordinary human characters called Vanillas.  In The Dresden Files TV series they were called civilians. Fables called them Mundies, which was short for Mundanes.  In Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula books the humans are sometimes called Breathers or Mortals.  Breathers is also what the ghosts in a few young adult book series call humans.  That and “Fleshies” like in the Casper movie.  In Bewitched and Sabrina: The Teenage Witch, non-magical people were called mortals.  The vampires of Anne Rice’s novels the human characters are called mortal.
So between Civilians, Breathers, Fleshies, Mundies, Mortals, and Vanilla, the idea of the supernatural society having another name for the non-magical ordinary humans also was not invented by J. K. Rowling for Harry Potter. You would have to have had very limited experience with the horror and fantasy genres if you think Harry Potter was the first to come up with the concept of a school of the magically incline.
The Worst Witch- about a little girl in Witch School, was first published in 1974 and the first movie version was in 1986 and then it had two TV show adaptations.
Tumblr media
Even Monster High- which I, myself, have compared the school in Wednesday to- was not the first of it’s kind.
In 1988 there was an animated movie called Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School where Shaggy got a job as a Phys Ed Teacher in an “All Ghoul school” inhabited by the daughters of the classic movie monsters.  You had the daughter of Dracula, the daughter of The wolfman, the daughter of The mummy, and a daughter of a ghostly phantom.  Sound familiar?  It was Monster High before Monster High.
Tumblr media
And don't forget even the novel Dracula in 1897 mentioned Scholomance (School of Magick) a mystical school supposed to be hidden in Eastern Europe over a lake. Also unlike Harry Potter, in the world of Wednesday, much like True Blood, the general public do seem aware that werewolves, vampires, and the like exist.
Does Wednesday borrow from other Gothic Horror and teen dramas or who-done-its?  Of course.  But it’s done in its own unique way.  And it’s a spin-off of a beloved property, The Addams Family.  So just sit back and relax and enjoy it for what it is.  This is not a rip-off of Harry Potter.  It’s a hodgepodge of Gothic fantasy and it’s the first time Tim Burton has felt like ...well, himself, in over fifteen years.  Stop looking for reasons to hate it and just have fun. With Gothic horror films like The Invitation also embracing old Gothic Horror tropes, and Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman finally having its own TV show adaptation, I find it to be a breath of fresh air to see 2022 being the year that Gothic Horror has finally made a pop culture return without a cynical deconstruction by people who never appreciated the genre.  I had been hoping for this kind of entertainment for a long, long time.

Do you make your bed? I do not. I toss and turn so much, there's really no point in making the bed when I'm just gonna upend the sheet and blanket again.
Favorite number? 45. If you ask me why, however, that I cannot tell you. I also like the number 7. And the number 5. I don't know why about those, either.
What's your job? To be as weird as possible. Lmao kiddinggg. Mostly. I am weird. Anyway, I'm a overnight retail stocker for the drug/gm dept of the store I work at, and twice a week I'm a file maintenance tagger (also overnight, also at the same store)
If you could go back to school, would you? Probably not? I mean...*sighs* if it didn't cost so damn much, or at all, I would go, I would find classes that bring me joy, but the way schooling is set up now in the US? Nah, I'm not wasting my money. I don't have any to waste anyhow lol
Can you parallel park? I cannot; I got *very* lucky I didn't have to do that for the driver's test. Cos there's no way I would've pulled that off. Horrifying thought.
Do you think aliens are real? I do. I just don't think they'd ever waste their time with our planet. Our planet is essentially the Florida of the Universe; nobody wants to come here. Not because the planet itself is bad (she is very, very good) but nobody wants to deal with the humans on it lmao
Can you drive a manual car? I cannot. And I don't ever want to learn. Automatic all the way, thank you! I have a hard enough time driving as it is lol
Guilty pleasure? Honestly, I don't believe this should be a thing that exists. Like what you like, quit letting society dictate how you're allowed to be happy, just fuckin' be happy. ....As long as it's not hurting others or breaking any laws, or hurting any animals, of course.
Tattoos? I would but none of the parlors are close enough. And I'm poor. Also my skin is riddled with picking scars; isn't there, like, a rule they can't tattoo scarred skin?
Favorite color? Blue; more specifically sky blue. Also liking light/spring green as of late!
Favorite type of music? I don't have a straight answer for this one; I have a certain sound I like that I find across multiple genres. It's generally a faster, more upbeat kind of noise.
Do you like puzzles? I love puzzles, I'm just not any good at them. I highly recommend playing Nancy Drew PC games. They're so so so good. I always end up cheating on them cos I'm not a smart person but I do enjoy trying to solve on my own first before I get frustrated lol
Any phobias? People. Spiders. Heights. Drowning. Suffocation. Small enclosed spaces. Crowds. Wasps. Scorpions.
Favorite childhood sport? I played softball for three years from 3rd grade to 5th (8yo to 10yo) (mostly out of pressure; I wasn't any good at it). And golf one summer in high school; it started off as free lessons at Elm Tree, a golf course near where I lived (beautiful course), and then I did so well I got put into a league where I failed miserably and never went back lol
Do you talk to yourself? All. The. Time. In fact, I'm really only ever verbal with myself. I'm rather nonverbal with everyone else. Unless I'm comfortable around you but sometimes not even then.
Tea or Coffee? Coffee, 100%. I respect tea but I do not like it lmaooo
What movies do you adore? Gurl, it'd be easier to ask me what movies I hate. Good lord. Top of my mind movies I love: Twister, The Incredibles, The Incredibles 2, Tango & Cash, any of the scooby doo animated movies, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Princess Diaries, The Princess Diaries 2, We Have A Ghost, Enola Holmes, Enola Holmes 2, Stargate, Stargate: Ark Of Truth, Stargate: Continuum, Dante's Peak, Demolition Man, Se7en...okay! I think that's enough examples lolol
Tagging! If y'all want to participate, that is, you absolutely do not have to!
@lokisleftfoot @ryukiki @greek-praetor @flyawayprincess @randomestfandoms @royalnugget42 @stargatebarbie @help-help-i-need-an-adult @goorehaus
And if you weren't tagged but you wanna do this, join in!

Since the Velma show is so uhhhhh Like That, here's my pitch for an adult Scooby Doo show:
The most similar existing Scooby thing is On Zombie Island and the two biggest inspirations/points of comparison outside of Scooby Doo are Scream (particularly MTV Scream) and Cabin in the Woods.
The gang are college upperclassmen, juniors and/or seniors.
Fred started as a finance major but switched to criminal justice. Daphne’s a journalism major. Shaggy's getting a fine art degree and his concentration is ceramics, Velma's major is physics.
Fred and Shaggy were roommates freshman year and had an enemies to besties situation because they were so different. Mostly the problem was that Fred's upbringing was super sheltered and old money, prep school, country club, young republicans - so when he meets Shaggy he's like how tf do I deal with people who aren't from my very rigid uptight wealthy background? But he lets go of that bullshit really quickly and now he and Shaggy are inseparable and have chosen to continue to live together since.
Daphne is Fred's high school sweetheart, they both went to single gender prep schools but they were like "sibling" schools that held co-ed events together. She's from the same super rigid old money world as him but she's always been more rebellious and aware of the outside world than he was. Maybe they broke up for a while because even tho they decided to go to the same university, they wanted different college experiences and she was a big party girl freshman and sophomore years, but now she's calmed down a little and he's opened up, so they're the most compatible they've ever been and they find their way back to each other.
Velma and Shaggy met in an art class that she was taking as an elective and he was taking as part of his main course work. She'd never done any kind of art before and was super nervous but Shaggy was really encouraging and they became buddies and she discovered a new interest and made all her free electives be art classes after that. If Shaggy's having a hard time getting a sculpture to be structurally stable, he comes to Velma for physics assistance.
Shaggy decides to adopt a dog and he's on the humane society website like look at this weird dog, it says he's been there for months, how come nobody has adopted him? So he takes Fred and they go to the humane society and they meet this fucked up Great Dane that nobody else wants and they agree to adopt him.
That's when Weird Shit TM starts happening on campus and in the surrounding town. It is NOT monster of the week but maybe the first couple episodes are sort of falsely monster of the week seeming, until they realize everything is connected. Definitely keeping the villian's motivation as some horrible destructive ultra capitalist scheme, and it hits close to home for Fred and Daphne because that's kind of the world they're from, but it's also supernatural somehow and Scooby's nature as a not-quite-normal dog is tied into it, the four of them like, become fated to solve this problem because they welcome Scooby into their lives. Stakes are high, the supernatural is real and death is permanent. The gang should lose peripheral friends and have to figure out the mystery while also mourning, and the villian or one (or more) of the villian's henchmen is someone in the gang's outer circle. Like maybe the big bad is the president of the university and Daphne's sorority sisters and Shaggy's plug and Velma's advisor are all in on it.
Velma IS a lesbian, and Indian. If we're making one of them black it's gotta be Fred or Daphne, I hate that they made the stoner character black in the Velma show lol that was my first red flag. I mean, in this I think they're all stoners, they do the round table That 70's Show thing, Shaggy is just the only one with a Stoner Personality. And I think it's cool for him to be non-white, it just feels cringey to me for him to be black. But I think it could be really interesting for one of the super wealthy upper crust characters to have to realize that they were really insulted from racism in their specific community but that doesn't mean that it isn't still a big deal everywhere else, and maybe even looking back they DID experience racism growing up, they just didn't realize it. Perhaps they're even mixed race, half black half white and have to deal with the intersecting privilege and oppression that simultaneously brings them. Fred is bi but still figuring it out, Shaggy is nb but enjoys masculinity and just doesn't give a shit about how other people perceive his gender, it's a more internal experience for him, and he defies gender conventions in subtle ways.

Does the conjoined sister know she’s being targeted or that her twin brother kills the killers?
Not really, he tries to keep it on the down low. At most she hears occasionally that some 'creep' is hanging around Sorority Row again and then later about their face getting caved in with gardening equipment or shop tools. Convos do go like this:
Her: Wowie, The police found that body of that guy who had been harassing several girls down the street hung up like a meat pinata with his computer history leaked and a whole manifesto. With the stuff on there I'm kinda glad he's gone, he could have really hurt someone. I wonder who did him in. I bet they're like...super scary
-Flash back cut to Him literally dropping down two stories on top of this guy who had full intentions of going in and massacring a bunch of girls because one girl in high school wouldn't go out with him because he 'smelled like an armpit when he talked' and decided to try and take that rage out on women who don't even know he exists only for a guy who weighs 200+lbs in pure muscle chokes him out because LEAVING A MANIFESTO ON A PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY IN THE OPEN WHERE IT CAN BE SEEN IS NOT A SLICK MOVE-
Him, quietly playing Papa's Pizzaria in the commons room: Ye. Super scary.
He tries not to bother her a lot with it, at best, she's got a lot on her mind 24/7 with classes, sorority duties, in general everything. At best he just views it as doing society a decent Favour. Those that he can't scare off/scare straight he just kills. There's probably some group of teens trying to Scooby doo and find out who the Collage Vigilante is/think there's some slasher out there trying to protect their hunting grounds.

Using this as an excuse to talk a bit about my adult scooby doo esque campaign idea
So I’m thinking it’s set probably freshman year of college, the party is already semi established because everyone went to the same high school and had solved a few like low level cases most of which were just pranks or maybe like a small time robbery or something along those lines so everyone's got a little bit of experience and likes mystery solving.
Something started happening around the campus a few years before, a kid would go missing here and there, never enough for there to be an over amount of concern and most of the kids were partiers, outcasts, or just students who weren't missed too easily and could be written off as just quietly dropping out, it wasn't much of a concern until one of those kids turned up dead the first day of the party's freshman year set up by the founder's statue.
This would then start the overarching problem dealing with a long forgotten secret about the campus' history, a secret society, and be fairly like gothic horror type vibes.
I’d like most of them to be human but I want so badly for one them to choose to play a scooby doo character

Can I ask about your extensive Scooby doo dc universe thing?
YES ABSOLUTELY! MY TIME HAS COME!
Okay so, as someone that has probably seen/read every Scooby Doo related thing under the sun it's fair to say there's more than a few Scooby Doo/DCU crossovers, and the more I've gotten into the DCU the more I've become interested in the logistics
It would be easy to say oh yeah dimension travel, but in a few crossovers it's implied Batman's already a thing there and also it lowkey makes sense to be in the same universe
I think it's easiest to use the mystery incorporated reboot as it has the most world buildingand has a concrete city where it's set - that being Crystal Cove
If we assume for now that Crystal Cove is near Gotham due to the scooby/DC crossovers always seem to involve Batman (shaggy in the discowing my love) which makes sense due to the crossover of detective themes
Now technically crystal cove is supposed to be on the east coast and Gotham I'm pretty sure is on the West but we're going to ignore that
crystal cove maybe not a part of Gotham but has links to it, I'm thinking on the coastline next to it
theres a company that appears in more than a few episodes of mystery Inc called Destroydo Inc. and has a whole plotline surrounding the pollution and toxic waste it's spreading so I imagine that due to the proximity that toxic waste is spreading to Gothams waters and air, which in turn further increasesthe pollution of Gotham's air and water
makes sense for it to be NEAR Gotham but not IN it
In one episode called Where Walks Aphrodite the main villain is a girl that makes everyone intoxicated on a 'love spell' in revenge for being humiliated at her graduation. We see that she runs away after the humiliation but we dont see WHERE (pretty sure the next scene is her in a lab making the formulae) so we could interpret that she could 've gone to Gotham and done research on the toxins there and adapted the formula basing it off of the base formulas for fear toxin or ivy pollen
again with destroydo, it's not only affecting the waters by them but seeping into the Gotham waters as well corrupting things further and the fumes from the towers adding to further pollution and mutations
We never really get a clear answer WHY Scooby can talk and have the same capacity for intelligence as humans, some reboots don't address it and other reboots can't seem to agree on a solid story
SO CANNONS MY PLAYGROUND
I think it would be interesting is Scooby was an ordinary dog that got mutated to be like that (maybe he fell in Gothams sewers or something) and either Shaggy found him whilst on a trip to Gotham or Scooby somehow escaped to crystal cove where shaggy found him
Professor Pericles could have the same story
(Would make them slightly more messed up looking but that would look sick)
I imagine that residents of crystal cove are relatively unfazed by the events keep happening (people running round in costumes causing crimes who are foiled by teenagers) because they're so near Gotham but aren't actually Gotham so aren't as desensitized so still get shocked/caught unawares
headless horror episode would be more easily believeable with all the whacky things that happen in DC
Velmas' mum's obsession with the occult is also much more believable
The amount of times it's bought up that Daphne's parents aren't at home or are away doing meeting/parties/holiday and them being rich as hell maybe she could have some links/ties to Gotham high society (can and will force galas into things)
You CANNOT tell me the hex girls wouldn't be a hit in Gotham
Gator episode/hotel could be set somewhere between cc and Gotham, the closer to Gotham the more creepy the towns/motels get
Velma runs a blog in mystery inc called the Big Blog of Mysteries where she talks about her adventures and any conspiracies as well as gathering info on odd circumstances and I am convinced that Bernard follows this blog and regularly comments on it
Going back to Where Walks Aphrodite it would make sense that a lot of villains get their gear/ their gear is inspired by Gotham
There's SO MUCH MORE but I have yet to put it in coherent words, once I have if anyone wants to know more please let me know I'm so happy to ramble about this!
I know this was more Scooby Doo geography focused but that's because I know more about it, the more I read Gotham based comics the more I'll talk about them, and probably the more I'll be able to make sense
But if anyone wants more please let me know!!

Whumptober Day 24:
"I've got a head full of chemicals, mouth full of ridicule."
Goodbye note | Neglect | "I thought they were with you."
Fandom: Scoobydoo
Prompts used: all
So this ones a little drawn out, a little less on screen whump. A look into Mystery inc's not so perfect lives from teens vague perspectives. I'm basically writing the same thing over and over, because the headcanons are too good to change much. I refused to write Scoobys speech impediment though, I am surely doing it injustice, and it's terribly hard on my tired brain.
TW for implied abuse, Neglect and running away from home.
Rich kids, poor kids, middle class kids, no matter where you fall, there can be crap to deal with.
High society was fine for Daphne Blake, she shopped where she wanted, she always had food, she had a car-
She was exhausted.
Any club or extra curricular you could name, she's done. She gives everything 210% in the hopes that something will make her parents look her way.
She'd failed so far.
Shaggy Rogers hated high society, too much pressure and too many snobs. He'd been forced into so many clubs as a kid, he ended up hating everything except track.
He tried to do anything to keep his parents out of his business, to get them off his back, to block out their suffocating words. He spent time with Daphne- which was so easy, but his parents didn't need to know that- he did his school work, he went to track meets, he did anything and everything to be good and invisible to them, to get them to stop asking for more.
He'd failed so far.
Fred Jones loved his parents. He thinks… It was hard to love people he never saw for more than an hour over the course of a month. Their love for adventure didn't stop cause they had a kid, and Fred was happy for them, but the house- already rather small- felt like a box closing in on him every moment he spent there alone.
He did what he could, to keep himself occupied, to get himself some spending money- for all his parents' love of adventure, they mostly just had great luck and jobs that traveled. Fred did everything, so the house wouldn't crush him at night.
He'd failed so far.
Velma Dinkley's parents didn't quite understand Velma. It frustrated her most of the time, being forced into a bubble she never wanted to be in. She just didn't feel things the same way, didn't always say what she meant, her dad called her mean, and her mom ignored it and pretended she was her pretty little perfect daughter.
She distances herself as much as she's able, she doesn't give in to the pressure of disappointed sighs. She hangs out with Fred Jones, because he doesn't mind being her partner in class and makes her think about what she says. She tries to convince herself that the thought of going home isn't exhausting, that she can handle it.
She'd failed so far.
They're all just shy of 18, senior year, and they finally find themselves in the same place together. They've had interactions of different pairs/groupings, but now they're all four face to face. Well 5, if you include the dog, which they should since he was of the talking type and would get offended otherwise.
They'd all individually decided to solve the same mystery. It was the biggest- and only noteworthy- mystery of the town. Daphne just knew this would impress her parents- or she'd get to punch a ghost. Where Daphne went, Shaggy was bound to end up one way or the other, a little food was the best bribe, and Scooby was by his side and Daphne was in front of him, he had nothing better to do. Velma was unconvinced it was a real ghost- though she now knew a talking dog so- but whether it was or wasn't, she could hone her skills and hope for a challenge to solve. Fred couldn't very well let Velma go alone- he didn't have enough money to bail her out of jail if she decided to fight someone or trespass- and he was always looking for exciting things to keep him from home, and if there was a ghost, they'd need a trap.
To find other teens willing to go ghost hunting at a questionable hour in an abandoned fairground, was not what they'd expected however.
"Daphne Blake and Shaggy Rogers, I wouldn't expect to find people of your standing out here." Velma will say it came out better than it would have, but still harsher than what she'd meant.
She didn't mean, 'why are you rich as*e* in a sketchy field?' She meant, 'You guys do a lot at school, how did your parents let you out of the house to do this tonight?' Before either she or Fred can add to it however, Shaggy answers,
"I figure if there's gonna be any screaming tonight, it'd be like better if I can get some out first before I go home." Shaggy seems more mellow than he does at school, hand running over the dog- Scooby's- head.
"I'm gonna punch a ghost." Daphne states plainly, glaring at Shaggy when he elbows her, "and hopefully get into the paper, my dad reads that every morning." She adds reluctantly, turning to make her way into the fairgrounds.
"Do you mind if we join you guys?" Fred asks quickly, as Shaggy and Scooby follow the red head.
"Sure, a bigger group may attract the ghost!" She calls over her shoulder.
"We do not need help." Velma tells Fred.
'I do not feel comfortable.'
"Don't worry Velm, if we work together you'll have more time to do the fun stuff." Fred smiles, throwing an arm over her shoulders to guide her towards the other teens.
There is no ghost. Just an old man who wanted cheap land. But for a moment, it seemed as if there was one, a clue here or there that didn't quite add up. They all bounced off each other well, Shaggy understood what Velma meant and even seemed to appreciate her bluntness occasionally. Daphne listened to what she had to say, and pointed out things the girl missed- finding signs and meanings from seemingly random things that weren't actually random. Freds elaborate traps were easier done with three added people- and easier to shrink down to an easier one with three arguments to why they didn't need a flamethrower Fred.
They do get their picture taken for the paper, to be released in the morning somehow, but for the rest of their night, they take Shaggy's suggestion and find the 24 hour diner for milkshakes and snacks. They don't realize they need to wind down until they're sitting in a corner booth and their hands shake as they hold their menus.
"I don't want to go home." Shaggy murmurs after a few milkshakes and three plates of food.
"You could come to mine." Daphne responds, "Not like my parents will notice." She adds under her breath, slouching because she knows her mom hates it.
"So you meant it before, about the yelling?" Fred ventured cautiously, playing with the straw in his drink.
Shaggy shrugs,
"They say I've got a head full of chemicals, but their mouths are still full of ridicule. I had to like… fight to get my meds, but they hate it. Hate…" He trails off, shoulders curling inwards as he thumbs a bruise on his wrist. "It's whatever."
"It is not. Your parents suck and I hate them." Daphne glowers at the straw wrapper she's mangling, since she can't touch his parents.
"So do yours." Shaggy counters, leaning on her shoulder some.
"You guys could come to my house. I… don't have a lot of room, but it's empty anyways. Parents wouldn't even notice if you slept in their room." Fred puts in, nudging Velma to include her in the offer.
"My mother would lock me up if she knew I'd stayed at your place." Velma says with a huff.
Daphne sits straighter,
"So you stayed at my house." She says, eyes gleaming. "And I stayed at yours if mine bothered to ask. And Shaggy was at Freds."
"Idk Daph, they'll already be pissed tonight…" Shaggy looks like he wants nothing more than to say yes, but a fear lingers in his eyes.
"Well, if they're going to yell anyway…" Velma re-uses Shaggy's earlier reasoning, and suddenly it's like they've all been friends for years and this is totally ordinary behavior for them.
Like, 'Of course we're gonna lie to our parents about where we are and have a sleepover at Freds.' Like there isn't the likely chance of real consequences in a couple of their futures, but it doesn't matter in this moment. And as they gather at Freddys house, they come up with more plans, more 'of course's!' Because they get along like a house on fire, and smooth eachothers edges and calm eachothers nerves and boost each other's confidences. By the end of their night, after hearts laid bare- bruises on display, feeling gross and out there, tears shed and shouts shouted- they have the vaguest of plans.
Several days later, finds phone calls from panicked- re; angry- parents to one another.
"I thought they were with you!" Mr. Rogers accuses Mr. Blake.
"Why in good heavens would I allow my daughter to have two boys stay the night??"
"Well what about my sweet baby Velma?? She said she was at Daphnes!" Mrs. Dinkley is in tears, she had plans for them! Mommy daughter plans!
"Norville said he would be at Fredricks house dear." Mrs. Rogers cuts in, voice devoid of anything.
"Oh my. Well they could have been I suppose… let me look." Mrs. Jones mutters all the way to her son's room, jetlag weighing heavy on her mind, she had wanted to sleep when she'd arrived, not deal with this. "Oh look, a note, let me get my glasses-"
"Hurry up woman!" Mr. Rogers yells, he was late for work dammit!
"Alright alright, so fussy, I have a headache… hm, Dear adults- so informal- Dear Adults,
We have left. If you are reading this, we've been gone for nearly a week without your notice. As we are nearly adults ourselves, we decided we weren't going to put up with your sh*t anymore. If you want to check on us, watch the News, we'll be making history with our new 'Mystery Solving' gig.
Goodbye forever probably,
~Velma, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred
"Oh there's a paw print too, how festive."
The angry yells last for long hours and weeks after. Police read the note and do indeed find them on the News, they inform the parents there's not much they can do. They warn them, an investigation may garner… worse results than they hope for.
The threat is clear.
The members of Mystery Inc. Smile.
