The First Month - by Patrick Dwyer

"The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea." Isak Dinesen
Well as most of you know Archana & I bought a catamaran in the Caribbean and left Sydney on the 18th February 2013 to sail it back to Sydney.
We arrived in St Maarten on the 19th Feb after a 53 hour experience from Sydney. We were picked up at the airport by our engineer who was to check the boat out and fit all the extras. He took us to Anse Marcel a quaint little port on the NW side of the French side of the island that you could be forgiven for missing even from 100 metres from the sea entrance. We spent 5 days there living on 54 foot & 40.7 foot Beneteau Oceanis yachts before concluding the handover of our catamaran with the seller. One final thing had to be done by them to fulfil their part of the contract and that was to check the engine leg sail drive seals as water was noticed in the oil on the second survey. Therefore the yacht was taken by one of the staff of the company I was buying the yacht off with me to Polypat boat yard (an hour’s motor away) to be hauled out for a visual inspection. In trying to get the seal off the vendors engineer took a lathe to it and ruined the major part the seal was affixed to and which prevented the yacht being put back into the water. Having ruined the part we were stuck on the hard stand for 3 weeks whilst another part was shipped out from Belgium. So as the 5 crew (an Australian, Englishman, Frenchman & a couple from Zurich) began turning up for this experience of a life time they had to endure walking up a rickety ladder onto the boat for up to 3 weeks before the new part was fitted and then we got into the water with all our new toys fitted to the yacht i.e. 1500 litre per day water maker, AIS, new plotter, battery monitor, SSB/HF radio, BBQ, microwave, a freezer to add to the 3 fridges already on the boat and oven & 3 burners. The galley has 3 sinks with a 4th outside where fish are slaughtered before being devoured sashimi style or cooked. (Archana is in heaven and queen of the galley). We met some nice people there and invited them onto our yacht for dinner a few times over a Presente or Carab the 2 favourite beers over here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here at the boat yard we couldn’t use our water as it would create a flood in the yard so we had to have our shower in one open to the world to see at a cost of 1 Euro (in a pay machine) for a 5 minute cold shower that you had to keep pressing the button during those 5 minutes to keep the water flow coming. I am thinking of putting the same system in at home to get Archana to cut her 45 minute showers down. Here we could both have our showers within the 5 minute time limit which was an all time first. The secret is to now to get her from using 100 litres of water to clean her teeth on the yacht where the two biggest daily issues are power & water usage. The toilet also was an experience in Polypat.
Whilst we were in the ship yard at Polypat we hired a car for 3 weeks that allowed us to see the island, buy things for the yacht including a mountain of food (thousands of dollars worth including 150 litres of long life milk). The crew on our boat must be the most well fed around with Archana’s quality food the crew have also had sorbet, ice cream and several days of smoked salmon for lunch, pancakes, homemade yogurt & pressure cooker made bread. All really yummy. It doesn’t look as though the diet I thought I would be on during this trip will eventuate.
On other purchases two of the crew bought kayaks each so they can have a paddle around in some of the bucket list of places we are visiting. They have had a few places to test them out and others have had a play with them as well.
With the French capital of Margiot only a few minutes walk away we had the opportunity to visit the famous markets there with Archana once again being in her element bargaining with the fish sellers as well as the spice merchants where we made a big spend for the trip. One of the crew doesn’t like spicy food so Archana has been making bland offering to him which he seems happy with. How boring!!!!.
Tumblr media
So finally we were off and my first mission was to navigate our new acquisition through the Polypat bridge with wind and current hindering me and being forced to go through the narrow opening at 5 knots to keep my course knowing I only had 2 foot either side. This task was made even more difficult with everyone taking movies and photos and asking me to smile at the worst possible moment. I got through with no mishap which was a blessing as it would have spoiled my year if I had ended up like a Catana 47 catamaran that the owner bailed out at the last minute and did $100,000+of damage to the yacht. This yacht was being repaired 2 boats along from us when we were on the Polypat hard stand and only 150 metres from the bridge. In the time we were in the boat yard we had a bird’s eye view to the many near misses of catamarans going through when the bridge opened 3 times a day.
So we were off and the 1st night we spent 200 metres off the beach at Anse Marcel in a bit of déjà vu considering the dramas that emanated there. The following morning we were off to St Barts, Colin one of the crew caught his first fish, we saw dolphins, turtles and a nude French man who passed us in his catamaran, had a nice lunch, swim and afternoon at a lovely little island near St Barts before entering the main harbour there with multimillion dollar yacht all around. My favourite was a 3 mast mono hull. Each mast was the same height and it had 18 hydraulically controlled sails that covered any space above deck on the whole of this 55-60 metre yacht. We visited the township and completed our formalities before returning to our yacht by tender and had a swim before dinner and the mandatory drinks (for in port use only).
Tumblr media
Over the next few days we visited St Kitts, Portsmouth in Dominica (a great yachties place where we visited Indian River where Pirates of the Caribbean was shot, walks through rainforest, bought a hand of bananas with over 120 bananas on it for less than $5 but now we have the mission to eat them all considering they are all expected to ripen at the same time etc) then onto Tobago Cays which was what I expected all of the Caribbean to be about with the marine iguanas, so many turtles, sting rays and lots of other fish in this tranquil setting that Archana said she could spend a week there. They even had the boat boys come around with fresh baguettes and lobsters for sale to cruisers. We then left there for Grenada (the isle of spice) where you see so many waterfalls over the island and every town seems to have at least 10 spice stalls by the side of the road. We were sorry we went on the tour of the island on Good Friday as the rum distillery was closed. They must have known we were coming!!!!
Tumblr media
On the way to Dominica we saw a few dolphins and a humpback whale looking over her calf doing 100 or so tail slaps to the delight of Archana & I and the other 5 crew. During the trip thus far I have had a number of new foods not experienced before i.e. Jamaican apple, fresh tamarind and chickoo (sapodillos).
Tumblr media
Now I am writing this on the way to Bonaire some 400 nm from Granada. The wind has been right behind us all the way so have been doing it easily with just the headsail out but still averaging over 6 knots but peaking at 12.7 knots with 2 reefs in the headsail and no main sail. Colin caught his 3rd fish yesterday morning, a 90cm barracuda that we had for lunch an hour later. I was amazed how good eating it was as it is something I have never eaten before as you never see it at the fish shops. Yesterday we went within 1 metre of running over a huge turtle at 6 knots. He, fortunately for both of us, turned at just the right moment giving us a fright and also an experience. I saw my 1st Portuguese Man-War today. A huge marine stinger (about the size of a large coke bottle) with colourful sail. So many flying fish that are buzzing our boat constantly along with the birds dive bombing them with occasional success. On the Grenada to Bonaire leg we experienced our first gale as the wind hit 35 knots and 3 metre seas. On most of the other passages we were sailing close hauled with the wind so variable especially when coming out from the leeward side of the islands and into the open passages between the islands.
On the less than 3 day passage to Bonaire we had two days of up to 36 knot winds so it was nice to finally see land and moor up 50 metres off the main road in the capital in 5m of water on top of a coral reef where I have already had a few dives. One thing I am still getting used to is the heat. Unrelenting 30+ degrees every day. On one day I actually got burnt before 9am. Colin caught his 4th and 5th fish another barracuda & a tuna.
So the plan from now is to leave for Panama on Friday night (5th April) 5 days to do the 740nm passage, 4 days to wait to get through Panama, 5 days to get to Galapagos, 8 days there then say 21 days to get to the Marquesas. This is the best estimate I can give at this stage as so many variables to deal with.
Thank you to those of you wishing us your best via Archana’s regular blog and to others send emails etc.
Tumblr media
Until the next update from me. Archana will still be keeping you enthralled with her perspective on the big trip on her regular updates on her blog. Only 8285nm (nautical miles i.e. almost double for kilometres) till we are home

Sydney terror plotters have sentences reduced on appeal
By Jack Gramenz, AAP | 4:07pm June 26, 2023
Two men who planned a terror attack targeting a mosque in Sydney's west will spend less time in prison following a successful appeal against their 20-year sentences.
Omar Al-Kutobi and Mohammad Kiad pleaded guilty to doing acts in preparation for a terrorist act targeting a Shia mosque in Sydney's west at Guildford.
They were arrested during a police raid days after they had purchased a large hunting knife from a military supply store.
The two men planned to bomb the prayer hall with homemade napalm and vowed to stab people in the kidneys to impress an Islamic State recruiter before they were jailed in 2016.

They were sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 years.
The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal on Monday quashed those sentences, imposing a new sentence of 16 years with a non-parole period of 12 years.
The sentences were back dated to their arrest in February 2015.
Justice Richard Button told the court the reasons their appeal was upheld will be published on Monday.

Headcanons: The Owl House
In no particular order:
Luz and Camila took Amity, Hunter, Gus and Willow to Comic Con dressed like characters from Cosmic Frontier. They actually got to meet the creator(s) of Cosmic Frontier, who were very bemused by Gus and Hunter asking a multitude of questions and Gus’ warning about the giraffes. Luz and Amity got to hang out with fans of The Good Witch Azura.
After the Collector installed the new portal door, Jacob Hopkins managed to get out of jail and attempted to sneak into the house. The last anyone heard from Jacob, he was trying to set up an online fundraiser to get home from Mars (when he really was sent to a place called Quinhagak, Alaska.)
Months after Belos fell, Alador and Odalia divorced. Odalia tried to revive their original arms business, but it fell flat. Amity, Edric and Emira never spoke to her again.
Masha learned the truth about Vee and the Demon Realm. In fact, they’re one of the first humans to attend Gus’ Human Student Exchange Program.
Some sketchy ex-Coven Heads (the Potions Head, Terra, & Adrian) and Kikimora attempted to take over the Boiling Isles and replace the vacancy left by Belos. This was quickly thwarted by the B.A.T.T.s C.A.T.T.s and the Hexside squad and a thorough investigation and trial took place. Unsurprisingly, Odalia was also implicated in the plot because of the subpar Abomotons that were used. The plotters and Odalia were banished from the Boiling Isles and sent to Titan Trapper Island to live out their sentence. Kikimora worked out a plea deal and that’s how she was found working with Matt Tholomule to rebuild Bonesborough.
Eda and her dad have a better relationship these days, to Gwendolyn’s delight. Dell and Gwendolyn have also doted on King and Hunter. In fact, Eda was the one who introduced Hunter to Dell after Luz mentioned that Hunter wanted to learn how to carve Palismen.
A delegation was sent to Titan Trapper Island, and Bill is no longer the leader there. Tarak was appointed as the new leader and he promised that he and his people will not to go after the last Titan (King). It also helped that The Collector was included in that delegation to seal the deal and promised to build a portal between the two islands if the Titan Trappers behaved...and changed their way of dressing and the name of their island.
Lilith unlocked her harpy form the same way Eda did: with cookies made by Hooty. However, it wasn’t as “smooth” as Eda’s transformation, but with the help from Eda, Gwendolyn, and Camila, she was able to take control of her transformations. Hooty was also temporarily banned from the kitchen. Right after she managed this, Lilith showed off her transformation in front of Flora.
Luz told Eda what Papa Titan told her, and Eda felt honored. Though Eda was a bit offended about the Titan questioning her homemade apple blood recipe.
The Therapy Coven had never been busy after the fall of Belos. Hunter and Raine in particular spent some time with them because of the shared trauma of possession by Belos.
Hunter elected to stay with Darius, though he's always welcome with the Nocedas back in the Human Realm, with the Parks, the Blights (minus Odalia), Eda, and the senior Clawthornes.
Willow introduced Hunter to her dads after Hunter finished gushing about sewing and wolves with Darius and Eberwolf.
Boscha peaked in high school.
The Bat Queen sensed that there was something about Hunter, and Hunter told her about Flapjack’s sacrifice. After that talk, Hunter also became welcome in The Bat Queen’s forest.
Luz and Amity got more “mundane, slice-of-life dates”, both in the human realm and the demon realm.
The Collector visits King from time to time, and the Hexside squad learned to relax around them and teach them about how to approach people and play other games.
There was an attempt to introduce Camila to the food in the Boiling Isles. Suffice to say, she was only able to eat griffin eggs like Luz, though she found the animals there quite fascinating.
Viney and Jerbo eventually became friends again, to Barkus’ relief. (Barkus knew they would become friends, it was a matter of when.)
Principal Bump officially retired as Principal the following year. That was not the end of his love of education because he spent the next year to reach out to Glandus and St. Epiderm about revising their curriculum and offering multiple magic tracks.

Two Arduinos are used to control this DIY three-axis CNC plottee
We’ve seen a number of homemade CNC machines throughout the years, but Tuenhidiy’s build — made from some discarded materials — is no less impressive. This unique CNC plotter features a frame cleverly constructed out of two wooden wine boxes, which appear to be the perfect size with space for an Y-axis bed and an upright structure that actuates X movements. For the Z component, a pen is lifted using parts from a recycled CD player drive.
Electronics-wise, the project is also quite interesting as it employs servos rather than steppers for its X and Y axes. Actuation is handled by an Arduino Uno with pre-installed GRBL firmware and a CNC shield, which sends commands to an Arduino Mega running custom firmware. The Mega — plus a custom adapter board and an L293D shield — takes care of PID control for the motors.
More details on the machine can be found in Tuenhidiy’s write-up, and you can see it demonstrated in the video below.

Guy Fawkes Night: What those fireworks and bonfires are all about
Tumblr media
(Ausark) — Every year on November 5, skies across England, Scotland and Wales are illuminated by fireworks as Brits head out into the night to enjoy Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. Also called Fireworks Night or Bonfire Night, this autumn tradition has been a staple of the British calendar for the past 400 years. Kids in English schools grew up reciting the nursery rhyme "Remember, remember / The fifth of November / Gunpowder, treason and plot." But for those outside the UK, this rather unusual holiday's rather unusual origin story may be a bit of a mystery. Read on to find out more about the eponymous Guy Fawkes and how November 5th celebrations have evolved over four centuries.Who was Guy Fawkes? An illustration depicting Guy Fawkes and the other men behind the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.Print Collector/Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesGuy Fawkes, sometimes known as Guido Fawkes, was one of several men arrested for attempting to blow up London's Houses of Parliament on November 5, 1605. Fawkes and company were Catholics and hoped this act of terrorism would spark a Catholic revolution in Protestant England. England had been a Catholic country until Tudor King Henry VIII founded the Church of England. In the aftermath, Catholics were forced to practice their faith in secret. While Fawkes became the face of Bonfire Night, it was another plotter, Robert Catesby, who masterminded the idea. But Fawkes was an explosives expert, and he was the one who got caught under the Houses of Parliament next to the stash of gunpowder, hence his notoriety. Catesby, Fawkes and their co-conspirators were imprisoned in the Tower of London and subsequently tortured and killed publicly.Following the thwarted plot, Londoners lit bonfires in celebration, and then-King James I passed an act of law designating November 5 a day of national remembrance."When the news of the plot broke, or to be accurate, the news that the plot had been foiled broke, people spontaneously lit bonfires, and I think the tradition has just kept on from there," historian James Sharpe, professor emeritus of early modern history at the University of York, tells Ausark Travel. As the century rolled on, people started burning effigies of the Pope on bonfires on November 5. In time, effigies of Fawkes replaced the Pope.A photograph from 1955, depicting children at a school in Surrey, England, preparing the Guy Fawkes Night bonfire.Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesSharpe, author of "Remember, Remember: A Cultural History of Guy Fawkes Day," suggests that the act of law, which stipulated a thanksgiving church service, was a big factor in the celebrations continuing over the ensuing centuries. There are contemporary reports of civic feasts, explains Sharpe, and later fireworks. From the late 19th century onward, the religious overtones of November 5 dampened, and the act of law designating it a day of remembrance was repealed. Still, bonfires and celebrations continued. It became a common sight to see kids trawling English streets with their homemade Guy Fawkes effigy, knocking on doors and asking for a "penny for the guy," a kind of Bonfire Night-themed trick-or-treat.What's Guy Fawkes Night like today?Britain is now a secular, multicultural society, and so it's quite surprising that a holiday once steeped in anti-Catholic sentiment has endured.Historian Ronald Hutton, professor of history and author of "The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain," tells Ausark Travel that Guy Fawkes Night's endurance is in large part to do with its association with fire and light as well as the time of year in which it falls. While the holiday was once "a distinctively nationalistic, Protestant festival with a specific hatred of Roman Catholicism," Hutton says Guy Fawkes Night "no longer has any religious connotations to encumber it."Instead, Hutton suggests November 5 serves as a "rather spectacular, popular and secular festival at a time of year when people badly need cheering up."November 5 firework displays are now more commonplace than bonfires. While some people still light their own fireworks in their backyards, many head to community-organized events in parks and public spaces. That shift, explains Hutton, occurred in the latter half of the 20th century as commercial fireworks became readily available. That's also around the time when effigy-burning fell out of fashion -- with a few notable exceptions. "Compared with the joy of the fun of fireworks, the work of the dubious satisfaction of burning people in effigy became a lot less exciting," says Hutton. In turn, kids also no longer beg for a "penny for the guy."Still, while you're less likely to see a burning Guy Fawkes atop of a bonfire in current times, the conspirator remains one of the UK's most famous historical figures. His image is also the inspiration behind masks worn by anti-establishment protestors across the globe.Lewes Bonfire Night celebrationsEffigies of former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and fellow UK Conservative politician Jacob Rees-Mogg are paraded through the streets of Lewes during traditional Bonfire Night celebrations in 2019.Peter Summers/Getty ImagesWhile many British towns and cities no longer include effigy-burning in their celebrations, the small town of Lewes in the south of England is a notable exception. On November 5, several torch-lit processions parade through the historic town, featuring thousands of people, many in fancy dress. Celebrations culminate in large-scale bonfires featuring giant effigies. The events are organized by Lewes' six bonfire societies. Historian Hutton suggests it's the longstanding existence of these societies that's kept Lewes' bonfire traditions going."These are very large-scale events," he says. "They're organized by bonfire societies in cooperation with each other, that can take months and months in preparation."The fancy dress celebrations have come under significant criticism. Until recently, some members of the Lewes Bonfire Society dressed up in Zulu-style costumes with blackface. In 2017, the group vowed to drop this practice. In the past, effigies of former US President Donald Trump and former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have been among those burned in Lewes. The town council distances itself from the November 5th celebrations and discourages Guy Fawkes Night visitors."Lewes Bonfire is an event for local residents only, and we ask that people do not attempt to travel in to the town to spectate," reads the Visit Lewes website. "The streets are narrow, and the combination of dense crowds, flaming torches and firecrackers can be dangerous."Ottery St Mary Bonfire Night celebrationsA photograph of a past running of the tar barrels in Ottery St Mary in Devon, England.Phil Clarke Hill/In Pictures/Getty ImagesAnother small town in southern England, Ottery St Mary, is also famed for its Bonfire Night traditions. Every November 5, tar barrels are set alight and paraded down the streets. Both Lewes and Ottery St Mary's traditions have their origins in "rumbustious disorderly celebrations often carried out by youths," as historian Hutton puts it. Like Lewes, Ottery St Mary's formalized its November 5 disorder in the 20th century. Flaming tar barrels, once rolled through the streets, are now carried by members of the community.Bonfire Night foodThere's usually a chill in the air on November 5 in Britain, and over the years, certain comfort foods have become synonymous with the holiday. Toffee apples (called caramel apples in North America) are seen as traditional Bonfire Night treats across England, Wales and Scotland. In Yorkshire in the north of England, a type of traditional ginger cake called parkin is often eaten. In Lancashire, also in the north of England, there's also a tradition of eating black peas -- peas cooked in vinegar.Hutton, meanwhile, recalls his childhood in the south of England grilling sausages on the bonfire. Sharpe, who grew up in Fawkes' home county of Yorkshire, also recalls Bonfire Night sausages -- served up in the traditional English form of "bangers and mash."The rest of the UKCrowds watching a firework display as part of Guy Fawkes Night celebrations at Alexandra Palace in London in 2021.Chris J Ratcliffe/Getty ImagesBonfire Night is principally celebrated in England, but there are also organized festivities across Scotland and Wales. However, the holiday's original anti-Catholic associations means the holiday isn't celebrated in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.Instead, across Ireland bonfires are traditionally lit at Halloween instead, a tradition descending from the Celtic Festival of Samhain.Incidentally, historian Sharpe suggests that the enduring popularity of Guy Fawkes Night in England could be in part because of the established precedent for fiery winter celebrations at this time of year -- namely Samhain, as well as the Catholic holidays of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Americanized Halloween celebrations have grown in popularity in Britain in recent years, and these days, October 31 celebrations often bleed into Guy Fawkes Night. Indeed some might argue Halloween's overtaken Bonfire Night in popularity in the UK.Still, if you're going to be in England, Scotland or Wales on November 5, you'll definitely spot a firework or two. Of course, Lewes discourages outside travelers, but if you find yourself already there, Hutton suggests the perfect Bonfire Night starts with a local Lewes pub dinner before heading out into the cold night air to watch the festivities. He recommends heading to Ottery St Mary for a more chaotic experience.Meanwhile, Sharpe suggests heading to York, where Fawkes was from, and checking out the array of local celebrations there. You'll likely need a ticket in advance, so check out the local websites for details.Meanwhile in London, there are organized, ticketed firework displays across the capital. One of the largest is the Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival in north London, offering a panoramic view of the city. South of the river, Battersea Park Fireworks offers pyrotechnics in a park neighboring the newly renovated Battersea Power Station, which once powered up a fifth of London's electricity.Top image: Crowds watch a fireworks display as part of Guy Fawkes celebrations at Alexandra Palace in London on November 6, 2021. Consumption Day 13 9/20
Today I consumed many different services at the UMN for complete my Packaging Project. Early on in the day I consumed the campus connector bus which consumes gas to get to me Rapson Hall to print my packaging labels. From there I consumed the Rapson Hall printers and plotters to print out my label. I consumed my x-acto knife, double sided tape, ruler, and scissors all from the UMN bookstore to cut and apply my packaging label to my product. Next, I consumed the imaging lab at Rapson to photograph my work. There, I consumed a camera, tripod, lighting, and aid from lab assistants to photograph my work. I used my laptop and the lab's desktop to upload my photographs, edit them, and add them to my presentation.
In continuation with my theme for posts, throughout the day I also consumed many video and audio clips. I consumed Gilmore Girls on my phone, I consumed an episode of the podcast Office Ladies on my phone, I also consumed a zoom call about study abroad options on my phone. These video and audio clips helped separate me from a long day of working on my packaging project for class.
Below is an image of my final packaging design called, "Love your Jam-ma," a homemade jam based on my grandmother fruit garden and passion for gardening.

On which date is Guy Fawkes Night celebrated each year in the UK?
Tumblr media
Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is a firework festival in Britain that remembers the failed Gunpowder Plot of 5th November 1605. On that day, Guy Fawkes was arrested while guarding explosives beneath the House of Lords in London, with which Catholic plotters intended to assassinate the Protestant king, James I. In celebration of the king's survival, people lit bonfires around London. This inspired the Observance of 5th November Act, which enforced an annual public day of celebration for the plot's failure.
Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) was a member of a Roman Catholic revolutionary group based in England who planned to replace the king with a Catholic monarch. After Fawkes was discovered, he was tortured to make him reveal the names of the other plotters. Eight men, including Fawkes, eventually stood trial for high treason, were found guilty and were executed by hanging in Westminster, London. The remains of the bodies were displayed as a warning to others would-be-plotters.
Each year on the 5th November, the people of Britain build large bonfires, light fireworks, and burn figures of Guy Fawkes known as "the guy". During the days before Bonfire Night, children used to take their homemade "Guys" onto the streets and ask for "a penny for the Guy" to collect money to buy fireworks. Now fireworks are only sold to over 18s, so this tradition has died out.

Nicaragua’s repression
By Ishaan Tharoor, Washington Post, July 19, 2018
Forces loyal to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega deepened their crackdown on the country’s opposition on Wednesday, appearing to take full control of a rebel stronghold in the city of Masaya. A day earlier, heavily armed police and paramilitary fighters stormed the neighborhood of Monimbó, killing at least three people and taking 40 others into custody, according to a human rights group.
“In recent days the widespread attacks against the civilian population have intensified and grown in terms of scale and coordination, with aggressors carrying lethal weapons deployed to cities like Masaya that have come to symbolize the resistance to President Ortega’s merciless regime,” Erika Guevara-Rosas, the Americas director for Amnesty International, said in a Wednesday statement.
“This is a massacre in Monimbó,” high school teacher Álvaro Gómez said to the Wall Street Journal. “They’ve killed a bunch of youths who are resisting with homemade mortars, bombs and their anger.”
The violence there brings the death toll in Nicaragua to around 300 people--mostly civilians--since mid-April, when an unpopular pension-reform proposal sparked protests against the Ortega government. Those demonstrations escalated in the weeks that followed, with protesters setting up barricades in cities across the country.
They have been met with bloody and ruthless repression. A mass demonstration on May 30 in the capital, Managua, saw a dozen protesters gunned down by security forces. Over the weekend, pro-government militias cleared out protesting university students in the capital, driving them from their campus and forcing about 200 students to take shelter in a Catholic church.
My colleague Joshua Parlow was among them, pinned down by gunfire and trapped in the church’s compound for about 16 hours, where two of the wounded died from their injuries. The paramilitaries had blocked ambulance access, and it required the intervention of senior church officials and the U.S. State Department to break the impasse and allow the eventual evacuation of the students.
July 19 happens to mark the 39th anniversary of the victory of the Sandinistas, the left-wing revolutionary movement that overthrew the brutal, U.S.-backed dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza. Now Ortega, a 72-year-old former Marxist guerrilla, increasingly resembles the tyrant he and his comrades once toppled. Masaya was once a Sandinista hotbed; now it’s seen as a bastion of opposition.
“After returning to power in 2007, [Ortega] sidestepped the constitution to get himself reelected in 2011. He then completed his palace coup by assuming full control of all four branches of government, state institutions, the military, and police,” explained journalist Tim Rogers, a veteran Nicaragua hand. “He banned opposition parties, rewrote the constitution, and turned Nicaragua into his personal fiefdom, which he rules from inside the walls of his stolen compound, a concrete fortress he rarely leaves.”
Having long shed any pretense of Marxism-Leninism, Ortega maintained power by cultivating support among the clergy and the country’s business community. Until recently, he also could count on the largesse of Venezuela. “But then Venezuela cut its aid, and the government’s fiscal problems were exacerbated by corruption,” noted the Economist.
Now Nicaragua faces its own Venezuelan moment, with a regime violently clinging to power in the face of vehement popular unrest. “The demands of the people are clear: justice for those who have been killed, a return to democracy and the resignation of the ruling family,” Dánae Vílchez, a Managua-based journalist, wrote for The Post’s opinion section last month. “Ortega is calling for a ‘peaceful constitutional solution’ to the crisis, but he just wants to remain in power. His human rights violations have made him an illegitimate leader well outside of the Constitution. He needs to step down.”
Ortega, though, is showing no signs of quitting. He has tarred the opposition as “right-wing delinquents,” though many now opposed to his rule include former Sandinistas. His wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, labeled Ortega’s opponents as “coup plotters, few in number, malignant, sinister, diabolical, satanic and terrorists.”
The duo, critics warn, is following the same tactics as leaders in Caracas. “Like Hugo Chávez, Ortega sought to remain in power indefinitely, but lately planned to hand the reins to his wife,” wrote Otto Reich, a former U.S. diplomat in Latin America. “In pursuing that goal, he worked from the Chávez playbook: manipulating electoral laws and eliminating checks and balances by controlling the national police; co-opting the Supreme Court and legislature; curtailing freedom of expression and repressing independent media; and harassing and hounding opposition forces and other critics.”
Ortega’s brutalization of its own people risks repeating a bloody cycle many hoped Nicaragua had left in the past. “Venezuela shows that a regime which is heedless of the human cost can survive sustained national protests and international pressure,” the Economist observed. “Nicaraguans can only hope that their country will indeed prove to be different.”
