I'd like to share some information to people who enjoy emulating GBA games, especially on android. So here's the thing, I've been itchy to do online linking/multiplayer on GBA emulation, especially Pokemon games, and already spend quite some time to find both ways and people who are interested in it. Then I found an old thread in pokecommunity website saying this:

"Long story short, I have zero friends in real life, and I haven't been able to find a community for users of the GBA Emulator "MyBoy" to gather and link up. So, I figured I'd see if anyone here was interested. The purpose of this thread is to gather anyone interested in linking up on MyBoy and Trading or Battling on Gen 3. Post in here to find some partners willing to link up and have some fun :3."

Well that pretty much describes my intention almost perfectly. But that thread was years ago and already locked for comments. As far as I know, MyBoy has never be able to link you online with other people far away, at least not with the emulator alone. Simply put it can't. But there are other emulators, specifically on Android, that have their own/built-in online multiplayer for GBA games.

The main emulator I used to do online multiplayer is called Multigba S. I'm sure some or even many people here already heard about this emulator. Despite still not yet giving a really good experience in online multiplayer, I can say it's still the best way to do online multiplayer on GBA.

To simplify the reading, here's the main features of Multigba S that you need to know:

- LAN mode (for connecting 2 nearby devices to play multiplayer)

The image you see is the emulator's Public Server where people find each other and available servers online. I found most Multigba S users are Spanish(?) that play Pokemon Quetzal and barely see other people that speak English that play other GBA games. From what I read and experienced, the online multiplayer requires a pretty stable connection and high-end/flagship phone specifications from player 1/host side to get a smooth/stable gameplay. You can do the online multiplayer on low-end/budget phone, it works, but the disadvantage will be felt by player 2/guest as they'll likely get lags. But alas I can finally fulfill my Pokedex and play games like Zelda 4 Swords with foreigners. I have some more interesting GBA games with multiplayer mode that I can host, both vanilla GBA games and Pokemon romhacks like Unbound and some Emerald hacks.

There is also a Discord server to gather GBA players to find each other to play multiplayer online together, also for technical supports like save file transfer, multiplayer set up and such.

💻 DCA AU Idea: Digital Horror 💻

This is my first time posting a DCA AU so I’m sorry if my post sounds more like disconnected rambling ahaha 🥲 But here goes!

Think like a mix between Pokémon and Neopets, speaking as someone who played too much Pokemon and played literally zero Neopets 👍🏻

One day many years after the website has been shut down, You hear rumors about a “haunted” pet game made by the Fazbear Corp and decide to check it out, because you didn’t watch enough horror movies to know this is a terrible idea :>

The game (archived and run on a server supported by Fazbear fans, I don’t know much about tech so I dunno if this is even possible but whatever) runs like it should when you first enter it. However, it starts acting up when you input your old username…

On the 9th of January 2025, I saw an article in my latest copy of Computer Active which explains about mastering Linux distros.

It suggested using a website called 'Distrosea' which hosts free virtual machines of various flavours of the Linux operating system, all of which can be ran within a browser window.

There are a total of 71 Linux operating systems to try on the website at the time of this write up.

To install, update and manage software on Linux using a package manager, the distros mentioned on this list based on Debian & Ubuntu use the APT (Advanced Package Tool) and the distros based on Fedora & Red Hat use the DNF (Dandified Yellow-Dog Updater Modified) package managers.

Their are many other types of package managers for Linux. Since Windows 11, users can choose to install software using UnigetUI (a.k.a Winget commands).

About Distrosea:

When you click on any of the distro entries before selecting a desktop environment, you can read a great description of the background information for each.

I think this website is amazing as it allows you to test distros in your browser without the need to plug in a USB or use virtual machine software. basically it gives you a live install copy of Linux to try online for free. It profits from ads shown on its homepage.

Some of the distros have a 'popular' badge, to show which ones are most likely to have more online traffic. Most of these distros are updated to latest versions available.

When you run the operating systems the system information dialogue will contain the server CPU information and displays the virtual graphics card called Red Hat, Inc Virtio 1.0 GPU.

However the site uses limited user traffic to reduce load on the servers, so when you select a version of Linux, there is a queue system. Each session is free, however it is timed when idle to create space for another user. Also the server connection, which is based in India, can disconnect you from your testing frequency, so whilst it works well you have to reset your VM which will continue where you last left off.

Also some of the Linux distros didn't automatically scale to full screen, and so leave bars at the top and bottom of the screen. The old Ubuntu remains surrounded by a large bar around itself as no modern drivers will work with this old version of Ubuntu.

You can sign into your Google account and gain internet access in your VMs as well.

I would recommend trying this out on a large computer screen as the distros take advantage of hardware acceleration, scaling and look great in full screen mode!

Like… woke_mind_virus isn’t a fully qualified domain name, meaning it relies on a custom DNS resolution specific to his machine, or if utilizing a vpn, that specific vpn’s custom host file. Or that the American government would have a host entry for a woke mind virus, which if you’ve ever had to use a government website, is laughable. Also DNS is global for the most part, but honestly we can move on at this point.

So sure, we’ll say that the government has forced all public internet in America to resolve woke_mind_virus. Where does it resolve to? YOUR OWN COMPUTER, you silly billy! Obviously! This is *almost* comprehensible. Sure, we are all infected with the woke mind virus, why not. It must be destroyed within ourselves. Yeah man, whatever. Why not? So how do we destroy it?

Because while deleting one file could make a website inoperable, it does not remove every trace of it! It first needs a configuration file in the web server, usually Apache or nginx. This is at LEAST one file, but cmon, if you’re gonna psychologically program the masses and keep it out of public view, you gotta encrypt that shit! So naturally, an SSL is in order! That’s easily 1-3 more files. woke_mind_virus can get a pass on not being fully qualified in this specific case because certs can theoretically be self signed and trusted on local networks, but he wouldn’t be able to tell you that. If you stood up a little one page html site on a web server on your own computer, and navigated to it on port 443 (https://) you would get an SSL error, even though it’s on your own machine. I feel like I’ve beaten this into the ground enough, but just understand it’s stupid.

What’s important to note here is that these BARE MINIMUM files are what routes the request from your machine to the destination site, even if it’s your own computer. If you delete the contents of the site (also called the docroot), the site still exists, and can receive and route requests to and from it, it’s just empty. You’ll probably get a 404 because there’s no actual content to serve. This woke mind princess is in another castle.

It’s also imprudent to delete these configuration files first, because that’s how you determine where the site content actually is! These files dictate what directory (folder for you windows losers) is called upon to actually serve you the content you see displayed when you open a webpage. So you need this information if you don’t want to destroy the entire file system and only want to remove the woke_mind_virus site. Cmon Elon, this is baby shit.

So of course, the strat with the most Efficiency and preserving the rest of the system (which seems to be the point of the tweet) is to find the docroot, delete the docroot, and then delete the web server config files. So how do we delete them?

And here we have it: rm -rf

The syntax is as follows:

Even if you don’t know shit about Linux, you can probably see the problem here. It’s just so blatantly incorrect, it’s almost as if he’s never done it before.

To hell with Windows, hello Linux!

(Long, long 2 AM rant) I got an Alienware Area-51 Threadripper R6 from FB Marketplace last year. No, it's not my main machine, and don't hate me for it.

It was cheap, and it's nostalgic. I remember watching a bunch of tech videos growing up and this was one of my favorite computers. Did I understand any of the tech garble? No. But I thought it looked freakin' cool. So I saw it online and said why not. It'll make a good birthday present for myself, plus I can use it as a testbed of sorts for whatever computer projects I can think of.

It's treated me well despite my abuse. I've stress-tested it, done some rendering, ran some language models, and dabbled in crypto mining. One of the GPU's failed but i wasn't too surprised.

Throughout all of this, however, I've had three occasions where Windows decided to remove itself from the living realm. The first time I assume it was a driver error. I unplugged a device and it fully froze. After a restart, it would no longer boot. I'm not too worried since, it being a testbed, I don't have important stuff on it. So I reinstall Windows and move on. (Should I have had to do that in the first place, I don't think so.) The second time, it died after an update. A standard Windows update. Can't remember what exactly. But it stopped booting after the restart. This time, however, it appeared to also brick the firmware? Plugged in my installation media, turned on the computer, and I'm greeted with an empty drive list. It couldn't see the drives in my PC. Wack. Spent a few hours troubleshooting that one.

(I'm writing this at 2 AM, about to pass out, can't remember much details lol)

It's been smooth sailing for about four months. I'm having a blast, gaming, surfing, the like. I've started hosting a Minecraft server for my friends for the past two weeks. PC has been on for most of that time, with a few restarts to freshen up the system. Fast forward to yesterday (technically two days ago since it's past midnight). I do another restart, and before starting the server again I decide to check for any updated. Two pop up, I decide to let them install. Windows stopped booting. This time I'm stressed, since I'm hosting our server. I migrated it from Aternos so people can join whenever they want, so it has a months worth of progress on it.

I make an installation media (on a Macbook mind you, don't get me started on that process), and attempt to recover the windows install before I reset it. I spent four hours figuring it out on Tuesday, and couldn't even make it to the Setup screen. I gave up, hit the hay. Wednesday I got right back to it, going as far as to re-installing the BIOS. After that and some more, I finally get to the Setup screen, where I'm met with a new message: "Install driver to show hardware".

"awesome, a new challenge" the he sais to his self *he was then shot 74 times* I saw that message and knew this wasn't gonna end well. Luckily I had an NVMe adapter on hand so I could pull the server files from my drive.

Six hours were spent, wasted, on troubleshooting this error. I've gone through forums on at least half a dozen websites. Nothing worked. All hope was lost for Windows.

Then, a little penguin appeared in my head. I had to try. I've had Linux in the past, only temporarily. It's never given me any problems besides running games with anti-cheat. That's mainly why I haven't switched fully before. But developers have improved Linux support for games, and now Steam has their own Linux-based OS. So I said, why not. I created my Ubuntu flash drive, plugged it in and booted my PC. First try. It worked. Of course it would, it's Linux. It doesn't care if you install it on a literal potato fresh out of the ground. It's now Thursday midnight past, and I'm finally downloading my apps and programs.

At this very moment, I made a decision. I will never use Windows again, unless for the rare circumstance I need to run a Windows-only program. In that case, I'd rather dual-boot my machine than have it Windows-only. I've never had a bad experience with Linux. Is it challenging? Yes. Is it as user-friendly? It can be, as long as you don't need to do anything significant. But I'm fine with that. I'm willing to learn, and I have fun doing so. I'll finally rid myself of Microsoft's greedy and selfish products. And yes, I got the Minecraft server running on Linux. Only took me 15 minutes, and even that's because I've never done it before. It's a five-minute process.

Anyone out there have their own website and want to rec their host?

I'm looking for domain registration and managed hosting for a domain or three, good connection speed and bandwidth caps and such but no need for the leading edge. Preferably includes managed SSL (might as well join the 2020s I guess), database services (relational preferred but not required), and some kind of control panel interface (please don't make me relearn the command line), all preferably in the same package. Honestly everything should ideally be managed/hidden behind slick interfaces, so I can just click some buttons to upload my own content and then let everything else be taken care of by the professionals.

Don't care if it's Linux or Windows but it 100% must allow server-side scripting so I can toss up like a springboot site or something. (Nothing WordPress-only; I do not currently feel like learning that ecosystem.)

Very important that the domain registration piece be through a company where you can actually get your domain back from them relatively easily if you decide to move to somewhere else. I've heard horror stories.

Does not need to be free -- I actually specifically would like to pay professionals to do all the boring stuff for me -- but I'm hoping to stay under a couple hundred USD per year.

I am aware that GoDaddy exists, is very common, and will do the whole shebang, but I don't know if it's actually a good experience for a fairly technical but very lazy person. And I mean, I could google to see what else is out there these days, but [points at last three words of previous sentence], so! A post hurled into the Tumblr void it is. Hopefully it will not immediately land in one of the many dumpster infernos.

As promised, I managed to get rhe flash sale tracking (and new item tracking) working on the new (hopefully cheaper) system.

The previous system I was running was called an Azure App Service. This is essentially a simple version of a full blown virtual machine server. I was not using most of its features that I was paying for because it's an all or nothing deal. Almost all the tools were running as so called webjobs on that server. This is extremely inefficient, but it is really easy to set up.

Now I am moving the tools that are capable of it to a thing called Azure Functions. Its basically the same thing but even more slimmed down and entirely on demand. It's essentially just the webjobs part without the web server side. This allows me to host timed functions, such as the flash sale tracking, without the overhead of an entire server above it. The major thing for Azure Functions is that there is a monthly free grant of 1 million requests or 400000 gigabyte of data consumption. I won't reach either of those limits on a monthly basis. I'll mostly just be paying for storage and database usage now, which will bring hosting cost down drastically!

This is not going to be compatible with things like the discord bot or the website itself for the skin tester. But I have ideas for that as well.

Another upside is that I was finally forced to update from .net framework 4.8 to netcore6. Once I rebuild other parts I have more options such as Linux hosting which is most commonly cheaper compared to windows hosting that I was required to use up to now.

ROBLOX 2007 and 2008 RBXGS/RCCService leaks

Yesterday, multiple internal ROBLOX applications ranging from 2007 to 2008 were found and released. Most of these are RBXGS, which is what ROBLOX originally used for their game servers. It requires a 2003 Windows Server with IIS (Internet Information Services) installed on it to run. One of these (0.3.784.0, dated 5/13/2008) is another application called RCCService. It fulfills mostly the same purpose that RBXGS did such as rendering avatars and hosting games. RCCService is still used by ROBLOX today. It can be installed and run on your PC without modification.

After a little setup, I was able to render some avatars with it.

You can do a lot with it if you mess around. You could also implement it into your own website to render avatars automatically and host 2008 games.

Using 2008 RCC to host games also results in more security over self hosted servers.

Player IPs are not exposed if someone attempts to grab them. It only shows the Server IP

Servers automatically shut down if a DLL is injected into a client

RCC checks the version of clients trying to join, and will refuse to connect if it does not match. This can be bypassed if you change the version of the client with a program, though

There are still RCE vulnerabilties in the client, however, so I'd be wary.

Another huge discovery in the RBXGS are PDB files. These files contain symbols (function names), where they are, and line information. Using this makes it much easier to reverse engineer. This means that we might see a reverse engineered 2007 or 2008 ROBLOX source available at one point, if someone decides to make it.

Day 15: Tuesday January 14th, 2025 [Kinosaki]

Breakfast: Apple Danish & a latte

Dinner: maybe one of the nicest dinners I’ve had!

We checked out of our Kyoto accomodation at 9:45am and headed to the 7/11 to organise our luggage delivery to Osaka. Morgan filled out the paperwork and it felt very strange to leave our luggage at a convenience store. I took photos of our suitcases, screenshot the location on maps and made sure my AirTag was working. Paranoid much? After that we got the bus to Kyoto station, had a coffee and purchased our ‘ekiben’ lunches to get the Shinkansen to Kinosaki - the only part of our trip that Morgan organised before our departure haha.

The train ride was about 2.5 hours and it flew by! I finished my book, ate my bento and listened to music and suddenly we were there! We’d sailed past lots of fields full of snow and were pleased to see that Kinosaki was also snow capped! Upon closer inspection though, it was leftover icy snow and not cute, powdery goodness. Ah well! Still snow!

Our hotel was 7 minutes from the station but it was 2:15pm and check-in wasn’t until 3pm, so we dropped our bags and went for a walk. The whole vibe of Kinosaki is that of a ‘resort town’ where you can walk around in your robes and visit different onsens. I was incredibly hesitant to go to a public onsen for a few reasons:

1. They’re segregate by gender so I wouldn’t be able to sit with Morgan

2. I didn’t want to be naked (mandatory) around a bunch of Japanese women

3. I have tattoos and they are not allowed in a lot of onsens due to symbolic ties with gangs.

Morgan had thankfully booked us into a hotel with their own private onsens, Kinosaki Onsen Sensui - problem solved! They were tattoo friendly, included passes to all other onsens in town (if Morgan was so inclined) and included all meals! The staff were super lovely and very eager to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We had a comprehensive ‘check-in’ process and enjoyed a complimentary welcome tea and sweet upon arrival.

Our room was ‘traditional style’ - we had lattice-style sliding doors, a cute little sunroom and a short table with floor cushions to sit on. There was no shower in our room - we would need to use the showers next to the private pools downstairs. Our host, Kamako, gave us a tour of the hotel and showed us around our room. She gave us a map of all the onsens in town and pointed out her favourite. She spoke English very well and was adorably hospitable.

We’d been given robes to use (Yukata) if we were going to roam around. Morgan spent about half an hour stressing about wearing them correctly, but thankfully our room had a guide on how to wear them. They also had a hand-drawn ‘Welcome to Kinosaki’ guide that had recommendations from hotel staff that was really cute, and very helpful! We had some sake in our room before heading down to the hotel onsens at 4.30pm. They weren’t reservable, but luckily one was free! Once we’d showered and hopped in we realised how hot it was and had to crack a window. We spent about 15 minutes in the bath before getting out and heading back to our room haha. We then got ready and headed down to dinner at 6pm, as instructed by staff.

When I say this dinner was divine, it is an understatement. When booking, the website had stated that crab was their main delicacy, but I don’t like shellfish, so Morgan had booked us the ‘beef menu’. We arrived to a beautiful restaurant space, next to the lobby, with personalised menus and a handwritten welcome note. This place was so cute! Kamako was back as our server and guided us through our 7-course meal. I’d never dined in degustation way before. Morgan has some additional seafood in his courses, but mine were all vegetation or beef. They were delicious! My favourite was absolutely the Tajima beef grilled steak - it was buttery and served with delicious salt & wasabi. It is quite possibly the best steak I’ve ever eaten. We ended the meal with some caramel sorbet with sweet potato custard, served by the chef, and I hope our compliments didn’t come across too hasty.

After dinner we were treated to a complimentary sake tasting in the foyer. They were yum and the third was the most fragrant. We then put on our Yukata coats and took a brief stroll to the Main Street to take photos of the river lit by the streetlights. It was very beautiful even if the snow was a wee bit patchy.

Back in the hotel we treated ourselves to a bath in the second onsen (much nicer and less steamy, before the heat made us sleepy and we jumped out. In our room we read our books, had some green tea and were delighted to find that our room had been set up with traditional, mat-style beds for us to sleep on.

I really didn’t do any research for Kinosaki, as this was Morgan’s project, but it has been an absolute bloody delight! This specific onsen-hotel is beautiful, the staff are lovely and the town is gorgeous. I can’t wait to explore it more tomorrow before we head off to Osaka!
