Prepare for endless ranting. And as a certain someone says: さあショーの始まりだ わ!

I. Takagi Wataru

The Babygirl and Malewife of My Heart Personal Special Tag: #takagi is a good man

Points that I feel need a little elaboration:

I am so normal about them: I use the word "normal" as a synonym for "utterly obsessed with" and "absolutely love and adore". (I don't like the word in itself, hence, the only context I use it in, is this. But that is another story.)

*puts them in a salad spinner*: as in, the salad spinner is my brain, and he keeps rotating in it at high centrifugal force.

Canon isn't real if I don't look at it and That's a solid design right there: Detco Canon is... As much as I love it, I think we can agree it has its shortcomings/issues, and one of them is coming up. These two points go hand in hand at this moment because LOOK AT HIM!!! LOOK AT HIM!!! THIS MAN IS A BABY!!! LOOK AT HIM, HE'S PERFECT!!! THE SPIKY HAIR!!! THE SHAPES!!! THE COLOUR PALETTE!!! HE'S SO CUTE!!

I resonate with this particular video: his new design in the anime (partly thanks to the general Square-and-Pointy-fication) is just... THEY HAD THE PERFECT MAN. IT'S A CRIME. Bless that he is at least still cute in the manga, even if not the same way as in the early anime. The sharp cheekbones and soft looking hair have their charm.

My point is: THIS!!!! MAN!!! IS!!! A BABY!!!!

Literally I would kiss them and I want to BITE them: he makes me go FERAL with LOVE, and makes me feel like I want to gnaw on something or eat a whole fridge or scream endlessly into a pillow. I wouldn't do it to HIM (I'll leave that to Satou Miwako), but generally, the feeling is there. (Okay, I'll be honest, I would totally give him forehead, cheek, or hair kisses.)

To close his section, have one of my favourite bits about this Baby Of A Man. That poll was absolutely right about him, THE ULTIMATE BABYGIRL (and Malewife TM).

II. Kuroba Kaito/Kaitou KID

LOL I DIDN'T EXPECT TO GET A BINGO, EVEN WITH THE FREE SPACE HAHA

Some points are the same as for Takagi, but here is elaboration on the ones that don't match:

Bastard, A Beast Unleashed and They didn't get bullied enough: let's be real. He's an Absolute Menace. And I sort of love that about him. Highly competent (competency makes me go weak), and if that is not scary (and hot) I don't know what. And sometimes he also goes too far (lifting skirts is not okay at all, Kaito) and needs someone to put a leash on him (or kick a soccer ball at him/chase him in a classroom). I feel that sometimes he needs a bit of bullying a challenge, to think about things. And again, honesty: I love seeing him suffer a bit, I love his Panic Moments LOL. Not in a mean way. But I also love how kind he is; the baseball chapter in the MK manga has my heart, and the Clock Tower Heist, and the Red Tear chapter... Not to mention the Nightmare arc. He cares about people and making others happy. I feel I went on a tangent here. Onto the bastard bit: he CAN BE SUCH A BASTARD AND I LOVE THAT ABOUT HIM TOO. Two of my favourite bits of Bastardry from him include 1) HOW HE DISGUISED AS RAN AND HOW HE BAITED SHINICHI AT THE VERY END OF THAT ENCOUNTER and 2) THE WAY HE SENDS SHINICHI CAREENING IN THE SIDECAR LIKE IT'S NOTHING (but also Shinichi getting right back at him and setting fire to the fckin fuel.) Pure Bastard Energy.

I want their gender: I love the way he is just so free-spirited about how he dresses/disguises. And I love the thought of him and Aoko doing outfit swaps (I blame that competition in MK for these. Also look at these delightful posts on the topic).

Canon isn't real if I don't look at it: I have... issues, with canon, you could say. Like the way he has no support system, especially bothers me. I would like to see his character treated with more care (be it MK or DetCo). I live for good character development, and I crave that for him.

III. Australian Animal of Choice: Koala

Fun fact: I've been in love with koalas ever since I got a keyholder plushie from relatives in Australia when I was like... in kindergarten? Or early elementary? Also don't worry, *puts on sunglasses* I wouldn't have mentioned animals, if I thought I couldn't work with them.

Elaboration is needed here I feel.

I am so normal about them: I'm not as obsessed as I used to be but I'm eternally fond of koalas. Did you know their fingerprints are so similar to us they could be mistaken for human fingerprints? Or how they spend most of their time sleeping because the eucalyptus they consume is toxic? Or how they can actually swim well? Or how they are literally surviving by being Dumb As Shit because Being Dumb Saves Energy? Yeah, I'm totally normal about them.

*projects onto them like a mf* and I want their gender: Oh to be a koala, just existing, sleeping, sometimes waking up to eat some eucalyptus, then going right back to sleep. I want that.

That's a solid design right there: HAVE YOU SEEN THEM? SO FLUFFY LOOKING!!! WITH BIG CLAWS!!! THE BIG NOSE!!! SO SHAPED!!! NOT TO MENTION THE EARS!!!

They are so silly and They Sure Do Exist: how did this animal even come into existence? Weird lil creatures. THEY ARE JUST SO SILLY. THE NOISES THE MAKE. Like oh my god.

Literally I would kiss them: THEY JUST LOOK SO SOFT, HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME NOT TO BURY MY FACE IN THE FUR?

A Beast Unleashed: another MENACE OF NATURE. You cannot let him roam free, he finds trouble like it's Breathing. Also love it when he goes ballistic. Or when he shows how competent he is. Like GOD. HE'S AMAZING, and he's a danger to criminals and himself, mostly.

Everyone else if wrong about them: not EVERYONE, just... some people. We agreed with a friend that some of our issues in portrayal lies with the fandom sort assigning him traits that Hakuba has, but not Shinichi (Hakubification). Of course, people can have their fun with it, but it's not for me and have my own opinions on the matter.

Canon isn't real if I don't look at it: again, DetCo has issues. Like the lack of continuity/ erased character development, or not bringing up issues ever again, and the like. Early DetCo was GOOD at these, and I miss those times.

That's a solid design right there and I fuck with this aesthetic so hard: HE IS!!!! SO SHAPED!!!!! SO ROUND!!! (or at least used to be) THE GENTLE CURVES OF HIS FACE!!! THE SILLY HAIR!!!! NOT TO MENTION HIS FCKIN WARDROBE!!!! I'M OBSESSED WITH HIM!!! Also, I have a huge thing for blue eyes and dark hair combination, not to mention the glasses... I'm fckin weak for glasses... god. He just hits all the right spots in my heart and brain. (Not to mention his personality, I WANT TO CRY I LOVE HIM SO MUCH-)

They didn't get bullied enough: I live for others teasing Gremlin Child. It's not quite bullying (never HURT HIM FOR REAL, I'LL CRY), but he needs to be TEASED MORE FOR SURE. I guess Bastardry also fits into this, that's good too.

SQUEAK: sometimes he is just so DUMB I want to SQUISH HIM HARD OR SHAKE HIM. I LOVE HIM, I SO DO, even if he is an idiot at times. God. I love him.

Literally I would kiss them and I want to BITE them: HIS CHEEKS ARE SO PERFECTLY ROUND I WANT TO CHOMP ON THEM. ALSO ALL THE KISSES TO HIM!!!!! BABY BOY!!!! GIVE HIM ALL THE KISSES!!!! AND HUGS TOO!!!

Kris needs to know the name of the cute girl who keeps coming in to the coffee shop. She also might be in love with the girl.

Kris stares at the door so hard she thinks her eyes are drying out, willing the pretty girl to come into the coffee shop. If she blinks, she could miss her.

“Hey.”

Kris jumps about a foot. “Chuck! Jesus. When did you get here?!”

Chuck stares at her. “Like, twenty minutes ago. You said hi to me when I walked in.”

On review, Kris realizes he’s right. “Oh. I knew that.”

He grins at her. “Sure you did. Still waiting for the pretty girl?”

“Shut up,” Kris says, feeling her face flush pink.

“That’s a yes,” Chuck laughs. “Just ask her out, my god.”

“I can’t!” Kris says. “I don’t even know her name. I can’t ask her out if I don’t know her name.”

Chuck blinks, wiping out the blender. “Why not?”

Kris can’t explain why, exactly, just that she can’t because there are rules. “I have to learn her name first. So I can write my phone number on the cup and be all cute about it.”

“That feels like one of those rules you made for yourself that don’t exist anywhere else,” and damn if Chuck isn’t right. Just because they’re her rules, though, doesn’t make them pretend. She has to follow them. “I feel like she wants you to ask for her number.”

“Then why doesn’t she ask for mine?” Kris realizes, belatedly, that Chuck’s cleaned, like, three blenders and she’s been standing here panicking for five minutes, so she arranges the mugs and cups so they’re more easily accessible. Well, for her. Trent always complains that they’re in the wrong order of size, but he’s not working today and he is also always wrong.

“Because you’re at work, and asking for somebody’s number at work is usually considered creepy.” Chuck throws the towel over his shoulder. She always appreciates that Chuck explains it so nicely – other managers haven’t been so kind.

“Even if that person is very clearly in love with the customer?” Kris sighs, slumping onto the counter. “Don’t worry, I’ll clean it again.”

“Rad,” Chuck says, laughing lightly. “Look, Kris, you’ll have to make the move. I can tell she’s a good enough person that she’s not going to hit on you while you’re on the clock.”

“Even if I want her to?” Kris mumbles, face still pressed to the cool counter.

Something drops on her back, and her only possible guess is a towel she’s going to have to use to wipe down the counter. “Even if you want her to.”

“I keep missing her name!” Kris wails, watching the girl walk out of the shop. “You two keep sniping her before I can take her order!”

“You were in the literal dishwasher, Kris,” Chuck says, snapping a towel in the air. “We weren’t going to be able to get you, you know. Out of there. Without a scene.”

Kris huffs. “This is so mean. The universe hates me.”

“I think the universe is too busy spawning chaotic children, designed to create an ouroboros to consume itself into oblivion, to worry about your coffee girlfriend, Kristofer,” Dan says. He’s shoved his face literally inside of a bowl of coffee beans, which somehow isn’t the weirdest thing about him in the moment.

“I – sure?” Chuck says, tossing a, “Do you understand this guy?” look to Kris over Dan’s shoulder.

“I can feel you talking about me,” Dan says. “And it’s Danhausen, not Dan. Be nice about my name.”

“You got my name wrong!” Kris yells, arms going in the air.

“Sorry, Kristin,” he clarifies.

Kris blinks. “How – how did you know my full name is Kristin?”

“I know all things,” Danhausen responds, and he darts off to the back.

“Hope he’s not chugging the chocolate sauce back there,” Chuck says, frowning. “Corporate is weird about the chocolate sauce.”

“They are?” Kris asks.

Chuck nods, eyes watching something with a little smile on his face, something no one else can see. “Yeah. Me and Orange got in trouble. Worth it, though.”

Kris is desperately in need of not knowing anything more about that detail, and throws herself into cleaning the coffee mugs.

The next day, Kris is ready. She friendshiply bullied Orange into taking the morning shift, because that’s how you do things in this place, and walks in at 10:02 in the morning to see Chuck glaring at her.

“You look chipper,” he grumbles. “I’ve been here since five.”

Kris shrugs, adjusting her apron and then her hair. “I have somebody to woo.”

“Woo fuckin’ hoo,” Chuck says.

“Exactly. Now if you don’t tell me exactly the second the girl walks into the coffee shop, you will die and no one will find the body.”

“That’s the spirit!” yells Danhausen from the back room. She jumps. She shouldn’t, at this point. But she does.

She’s – well, not short with customers, exactly, but she’s not quite as good at the peopleing thing today as she usually is. She tells a younger guy to “hurry up and choose” when he waffles on which sandwich to add to his mocha latte. She snaps at a teenage girl to “just pick the caramel!” when she spent half a minute on deciding whether or not to add an extra caramel shot. Chuck shoots her a couple of looks, but doesn’t interfere. She’s thankful for that.

“Do you – go to the bathroom, Jesus,” Chuck says, staring at her incredulously. She hadn’t realized she was doing her gotta-pee dance so obviously. “We can tell, Kris. You’ve worked here two years.”

“I’m fine!” she snaps. “I’m – I’m fine. I don’t need to go.”

“You can literally burst your bladder,” Chuck says. “Please don’t make me explain a pee emergency to paramedics.”

Kris opens her mouth to argue, because what if she misses the pretty girl and her whole plan falls apart, but she stops when she realizes she will literally pee all over herself if she uncrosses her legs.

“Right,” she says. “You yell if she shows up.”

“I will,” Chuck hollers.

“As will I,” Danhausen adds, and Kris wishes he hadn’t been listening.

It’s the fastest pee of her life and she trips over her sneakers as she walks out of the bathroom, her apron flopping in front of her and flying in front of her face.

“Oh, my god!” comes a girl’s voice. “Are you okay?”

Kris looks up to see the face of an angel, a face she’s been dying to see for more than a moment and speak to for weeks, peering down at her with concern.

“Here,” she says, dropping to her knees. “Are you hurt? Do you need help up?”

Kris tries not to short circuit at the warmth of the girl’s arms around her shoulders. She’s about to ask the girl’s name, and maybe for her hand in marriage, when disaster strikes.

“Incident report,” says Danhausen, stomping up to her. He slides his arms under her armpits and hauls her to her feet. “We have to follow the protocol.”

“Not – Danhausen, not now!”

“It is always the time for protocol,” Danhausen says, and he’s disturbingly strong as he yanks her to the back.

The pretty girl frowns. “I hope you’re alright!”

By the time Kris gets out of Danhausen’s grip, the pretty girl is long gone.

“No!” she whines, slumping against the wall. “She’s gone.”

“Oh, yeah,” Chuck says, sympathetic. “Sorry about that. I tried to stop her, see what she wanted, but she said she wasn’t in the mood for coffee anymore.”

Kris exhales so hard she almost falls over. “I missed my chance,” she murmurs. “She’ll forever be the one that got away. All because I tripped over my dumb apron.”

“Now, now, Kristin, that’s not true.”

Kris looks up to see Danhausen hesitating on patting her shoulder, settling for a weird little move in the air. “Really?”

“Of course,” he says. “You tripped over your sneakers.”

Kris deflates again. Chucks slaps his own forehead.

She’s miserable the whole day, goes home to be miserable around her cat and her roommate Julia who glares at her slightly less than usual which is more disturbing than it should be, and lets the misery sink in.

Julia knocks on the door around eight.

“I know you’re miserable or whatever, but I’m getting DoorDash Taco Bell and I wanted to see if you wanted any. On me.”

Kris lifts her head up. “Really?”

“Don’t read this wrong,” Julia syays, holding up a hand. “I’ll still sue you and ruin your life if you’re late on the rent. We’re not friends. But you seem like you had a shitty day and it’s fucking with my energy. So, Taco Bell.”

Kris still smiles at her. “Crunchwrap and a Baja Blast. And, um. The cinnamon twist things.”

Julia cracks the tiniest smile. It’s the first one Kris has seen not involving Julia staring at the screen of a murder scene and figuring out the culprit.

They eat Taco Bell and watch some murder documentary that Julia insists isn’t too bloody because she did the research for it.

“I made sure the family had input and they cleared this,” Julia says, halfway through a massive bite of a Gordita Crunch.

Kris wrinkles her nose as she sees the artist’s rendition of the murder scene. “Well this is. I guess as long as the family said it’s okay.”

The next morning is less painful than Kris would have expected, for the morning of “after.” Julia’s put her used coffee mug in the sink, which makes Kris wonder just how terrible she looked and seemed last night.

She dresses and does her makeup, just for the sake of habit, and glumly makes her way into the coffee shop.

“Hye guys,” she sighs.

“Hey,” Chuck says, with a gentle smile. “Wait here.”

“Where are you – ”

“Wait here,” Chuck repeats, and he goes into the back room. An irrational, silly part of her, the one that still believes in fairy tales, hopes that he’s going back there to bring out the pretty girl who came to see her.

He doesn’t. Chuck comes out with Danhausen.

“Come on,” Chuck says, nudging Danhausen with his elbow.

“Danhausen is sorry for ruining your moment with that girl with the pretty hair,” Danhausen says, refusing to meet Kris’ eyes.

“It’s fine,” she sighs. “I was getting too excited about a long shot, anyway.”

Chuck’s face changes. “Kris.”

“What?” Kris asks. “I need to focus on the coffee right?”

“Turn around, Kris,” Danhausen says, and his smile is slightly less disconcerting than usual.

Kris turns around, feeling as if her all her efforts are a loss, and her heart nearly stops. “Oh,” she breathes. “Hi.”

“Hi,” says the pretty girl, smile nearly paralyzing. “Are you okay?”

“Huh?”

“Last time, you fell,” the girl says. “Are you okay?”

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine!” Kris says. She can hear Danhausen and Chuck step away. The girl is the only one in the area, and it feels like forever before she can speak again.  “Yeah, I’m totally fine.”

The girl’s smile grows. “So, I would like a caramel macchiato for Willow.”

Willow.

Kris thinks she should be feeling either way more crazy about this or way less, but she nods. “Of course, Willow.” The name tastes sweet on her tongue.

She marks up the cup and feels like she’s spinning as she makes the coffee, glancing up every few seconds to make sure Willow is still there, is still watching.

She is, with a lovely smile and the prettiest eyes Kris has ever seen.

Danhausen bustles in to start a coffee for the person who showed up a minute or two after Willow. “She’s quite magical,” he says, hand on metal far too hot to manage without flinching. He remains steady.

“Magical?”

He nods. “You feel it, don’t you.”

Kris thinks so. But he doesn’t know that she already feels like magic around Willow.

Kris drops off the coffee at the counter, and fixes the girl with what she hopes is a cute and flirty look.

She walks over and frowns at the cup. Kris worries she’s about to explode. “Is this…for me?”

“Of course it is,” Kris says. She tries to fix her smile: not too big, not too small, no crazy eyes. She can do that. “See?”

The girl smiles. “You wrote ‘window.’”

“I did not!” Kris grabs the coffee back and looks at it. “Oh my god. I did.”

“That’s okay,” Willow laughs. “Can I have my drink back?”

“Can I give you my number?” Kris blurts out.

Willow – god, what a pretty name, Kris is in love – blinks for just enough time to make Kris want to run away into the forest. “Really?”

“Of course,” Kris says. “I mean, I’ve only been trying to figure out a normal not weird way to ask you out on the job.”

“It’s not weird.” Willow bites her lip, and Kris’ brain explodes. “Um, when do you get off?”

“A while,” Kris says, wondering if quitting on the spot and asking for the job back tomorrow would be allowable.

“That’s okay,” Willow says. “I’ll wait for a lull.” Willow’s smile almost takes Kris out at the knees. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Kris,” she says, feeling like sunshine.

“Kris,” Willow says, and Kris might supernova at this rate. “Okay. I’ll be right over there. I can work from here until you get a break.”

Kris nods, unable to stop smiling as she fills the orders of the morning rush. When the flow of people has died down and the sun is streaming in above the trees to sparkle in Willow’s hair, Kris finds the confidence to take an early lunch break and walk over to Willow.

“Hi,” she says. “I’m Kris.”

Willow smiles at her. “Hi, Kris.” She sticks out her hand. The touch is like electricity. “I’m Willow.”

“Would you, um,” Kris says. “Can I sit?”

“Of course!”

Kris takes a deep breath, tries to quell her shaking fingertips. “Would you want to go on a – to the movies with me? Or dinner?” She fights the urge to keep talking. She doesn’t need to convince her. She needs to wait.

Willow’s face brightens, somehow, even more. Kris wants to memorize it. “I would love to. Are you busy tonight?”

“I don’t think so,” Kris says, and her heart is beating so quickly she can hear it. “I – let me get your number.”

Their hands brush a few times as they trade phones to input numbers. Kris is already addicted to it. “Okay,” Willow says. “I’ll text you when I get home from the office. I’m thinking you could pick me up around seven.”

Kris nods, and makes a mental note to clean out her car right after work. “I’ll see you then.” She sees the door swing open. It looks like an entire baseball team and their mothers are making their ways in. “Oh, crap.”

I feel like there’s... not much for me to say about Deuce? That doesn’t mean I think he’s a flat character, I just don’t find that much about him interesting. As I mentioned in my Ace Character Opinion Bingo, I think Deuce has the most generic haircut (and honestly, maybe the most generic overall design) out of any character in TWST. His personality is also pretty standard--serious and straightforward--without many bells or whistles to help him make a name for himself in the large cast.

Admittedly, I do like how he’s willing to make an honest effort to better himself and to be respectful toward his seniors and superiors, but he lacks the intelligence that I look for in a character to really get my love. Deuce tends to operate on instinct and brawn, two principles that are the total opposite of what I enjoy. Ironically, it is in embracing these traits of his that allows Deuce to gain his unique magic, Bet the Limit. They’re integral parts of who he is, they are what makes him unique--so even if I find myself not particularly caring for those aspects of him, it’s clear that this was the type of character Deuce was intended to be, and he completely and unabashedly owns it. I’m proud of him for realizing and accepting that.

On the subject of fighting... Usually I’d cheer on a character when they finally snap and go wild on everyone else, but it feels somehow “wrong” for Deuce, since the entire point of him is that he doesn’t want to snap... so whenever he does lose it, it feels less cathartic and more like I feel bad that he temporarily slipped back into a violent version of himself. I’m NOT saying I don’t expect Deuce to make any slip-ups at all, but it just carries a different amount of significance when he does 💦 so it feels way less triumphant than it should. I also feel bad for him when he’s the target of Ace’s (often unwarranted) bullying and teasing. ACTUALLY, NOW THAT I’M THINKING ABOUT IT MORE, I JUST FEEL A LOT OF PITY FOR DEUCE IN GENERAL 😔

Deuce does have the capacity to be cute, but it’s not enough to make me want to adopt him as my son or anything. I think maybe the cutest thing he has done is be upset that some mob students shattered his eggs because he believed they killed the baby chicks still inside. It plays on his kindness and naivety, which is why it works well. Most other times, Deuce’s “cuteness” is the result of him being awkward, genuinely dumb, or just not aware of his surroundings or his situation, which I find to be much less charming.

I think I’d find more interest in Deuce if we got more content of him with his family, if I’m being totally honest. I wonder where his dad has gone and how Deuce feels about that abandonment (whether it be because of an early death, divorce, or because his father just up and left one day). I want more tender moments between him and his mom. What about his grandma? What’s Deuce’s relationship with her like? Give me something that doesn’t just make me pity Deuce more than I already do whenever he shows up on screen 😩

… Okay, time for me to finally come clean about all my thoughts on L*ona 😷 because there is a LOT for me to talk about (though I tried to keep it as concise as possible).

First thing’s first: I think episode 2 is bad--not just the worst in the main story so far, but the worst in terms of all TWST content (including events, vignettes, etc.). It’s clunky, it lacks cohesion, and a lot of it straight up doesn’t make sense in-universe. And because this is supposed to be LEONA’S chapter, it makes him, by extension, also look poorly written. Episode 2 does him NO favors whatsoever, and it is composed in such a way that it makes him come off as unintelligent when the story was trying to build him up as this great schemer. Sorry not sorry, but Azul and Jamil did it way better. I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much episode 2′s narrative bothers me; it got under my skin to the point where I brainstormed an entire rewrite of it just to placate the little hamster running around in my head. There was so much wasted potential in episode 2, and I really hope that the manga and the light novel adaptations do what they can to smooth over the many issues it has.

With my obligatory “episode 2 is bad” vent out of the way, it’s time to actually get to the man himself: Leona.

MAN, WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN WITH HIM????????????

I guess it would be easiest to start with his looks????? 😔 ... OKAY FINE FINE FINE WILL IT MAKE YOU HAPPY IF I CONFESS THAT I LIKE HOW HE LOOKS????? BECAUSE I DO OTL which is really strange, because Leona looks nothing like what I usually gravitate to; I almost NEVER go for the characters that look “wild” or have long hair. I don’t always think he dresses the best (his dorm uniform and camping gear are extremely ugly in my opinion), but regardless of what he’s actually wearing, he carries himself with such a swagger that he somehow ends up pulling it off anyway. I THINK I JUST LIKE. HIS FACE...................... LIKE HE JUST ALWAYS LOOKS SO FUCKING SMUG, IT MAKES ME WANT TO SMACK THAT SMIRK OFF OF HIM 😩 His green eyes are also very striking, they have almost a kind of magnetic draw that other characters with green eyes lack. And he’s. UH. HE’S BUILT A CERTAIN WAY AND HIS OUTFITS SOMETIMES EMPHASIZE IT (like the low cut top of his dorm uniform that shows off his arms and his pecs, or how he wears his dorm emblem on his waist like a belt in his school uniform). THIS ISN’T SIMPING, THIS IS ME COMMENTING ON HOW UNIQUE AND COOL HIS DESIGN IS, OKAY? OKAY. GOOD, MOVING ON.

SO.

EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT HIM 🧍‍♀️That’s... a much tougher sell for me. Given his backstory, it’s no wonder why he is the way he is, but it doesn’t fully absolve him of any of his actions or his personality flaws. I don’t get why people don’t talk about how he literally tried to kill Ruggie more, or how many students he indirectly injured for the sake of his own ambitions, or why Leona isn’t frequently called out for generally being so selfish and entitled????? I completely stand with what Lilia said in episode 2: Leona acts slovenly and then blames others for his own issues rather than try to be proactive in bettering himself. With a heart as rotten as that, he doesn’t deserve to be “king”. “A collar suits [Leona] more than a crown”. Episode 2 Leona is truly a terrible person, and his defeatist “woe is me” attitude did not give me hope for him in the future installments of the main story.

... Aaaand here’s the part where I admit that I was wrong 😂 Leona is a lot (and I do mean a LOT) better outside of episode 2; it’s only that episode alone that totally sours him, he’s leagues more interesting and complex when he’s not... episode 2-ing. You can really see his full potential in glimpses here and there, but it always stops short of going all the way because Leona very obviously still has doubts about his whether or not his efforts will be recognized--if he will be recognized. He’s still sorting through some very complicated and angsty emotions, and that really comes through in his dialogue and interactions with other characters... but there’s still some good in him shining through, there are moments when his wits and natural leadership abilities come out, and those are the times when he is at his best. 

Whenever Leona is being petty or sassy to someone else, it is funny, but there’s a deeper meaning to it. He’s lashing out at the people whom he believes has what he lacks or the people who tell him how he should act (something that Falena is implied to do quite often). Whenever Leona’s helping others out, there’s usually an ulterior motive to it (he helps destroy Azul’s contracts because he had made a deal with Azul prior and wanted to be free from it, he tells his juniors an optimal way to mine for magical stones so they get the work done faster and he can nap instead of helping, etc.). He knows how to think outside of the box and how to manipulate people and situations to get what he wants... like they’re the chess pieces, and he’s the one moving them. It shows just how dangerous he can be, but also just how much good he can do depending on how he uses his strengths. DO YOU REALIZE HOW POWERFUL HE COULD BE????????? WITH THOSE BIG BRAIN FOLDS???????????????????? IF ONLY HE JUST CONSISTENTLY APPLIED HIMSELF LIKE THIS????????????? INSTEAD OF JUST SELF-SABOTAGING OVER AND OVER.....................

Something that I’ve found really interesting about Leona is that he has a surprising number of juniors that look up to him even though he doesn’t like playing with “kids”. There’s Jack, Epel, Cheka, and I’m betting tons of Savanaclaw kids. They’ve yet to turn completely jaded, so they are able to see Leona’s positives more clearly. He’s someone with a lot of knowledge and wisdom, and he’s perfectly poised to lead as a dorm leader and captain of the Magift/Spelldrive team. I enjoy hearing about how he actually gives useful feedback to help his players improve, or how he wants to secure stable futures for his dorm members (albeit with the caveat of tending to his own agenda on the side, but still). He may not like kids, but this makes me think that maybe a very very VERY tiny part of Leona wants to help nurture others so they don’t turn out as bitter and as resentful as he has. MAYBE THAT’S JUST WISHFUL THINKING ON MY PART 😩 but I don’t know, I see a little potential in that line of thinking after his conversation with Jamil in episode 6. Leona realizes that he and Jamil are similar, but he has more faith in Jamil being able to change for the better than he has in himself. Leona may not always communicate it (or he’ll dance around the issue or say it in a gruff way), but he has lost hope--and honestly, that’s much sadder than any of the vitriol that other people can throw at him. Once that hopelessness is internalized, it’s hard to run away from yourself. The true tragedy of Leona isn’t that he will never be king, it’s that Leona doesn’t believe in himself, and thus has set himself up for a self-fulfilling prophecy and a vicious cycle of self doubt and self loathing.

On a more light-hearted note, I think that I’ve come to appreciate Leona’s quirks with time. His sarcasm can be biting when it has to be, and at other times it can be funny (like when he claims he’s a ‘delicate prince’ or that he’s just some ‘lost child’ wandering the STYX facilities). He can also be princely when he has to be too bad he never wants to be, thanks to his royal upbringing. No matter what persona he dons, his charisma and arrogance is still present, and he knows how to use it to suit his needs (adbhlsbasihbdiasllbids THAT TIME WHEN HE DISTRACTED SOME FAIRIES BY DEMANDING WATER AND THEIR EYE CONTACT). This makes for some interesting dynamics between Leona and other characters; he’s very aware of others and their motives, but he doesn’t really intervene unless it suits him (pointing out that Jamil has “eyes that always glare”, realizing the trick behind Azul’s contracts, knowing that Ruggie’s loyalty can be bought with bribes and food, etc.). He can be petty and uncooperative, and he can also be very wise and insightful. Leona is a LOT of things, not just that mopey, angry second-born prince, and it has been a wild ride watching him develop from that into something greater. Imagine what Leona could be like if he could live up to his full potential, if he was able to overcome his doubts and utilize his intelligence to its full extent 😳

I think where the fandom tends to go wrong with Leona is thinking that his struggle is very literal. I understand why people would think this way, especially with the frequency at which Leona laments not being first born/not being king, but I believe it’s a lot more nuanced than that. What was it that frustrated Leona so much? That no matter how hard he tried to prove himself, he would never be noticed. His skills, his intelligence--none of it would ever be recognized, because people had already judged him before really getting to know him beyond the surface level and constantly compared him to others. Look at his frightening power, look at his brooding personality. He’s nothing like Falena. What Leona desires isn’t the crown, but to be seen and to be appreciated and to be respected for what he is. Giving him a kingdom or having him marry into some other family won’t necessarily satiate that. Just telling Leona “it’s okay, I love you and accept you for who you are” won’t help either; Falena and Cheka are shown to offer Leona a lot of love and unconditional support, but all it does is make Leona bristle and get more irritated. Thinking that a concrete solution or simple words can solve his problems trivializes the extent of his childhood trauma; I’m afraid that it runs far deeper than any of us can hope to understand.

Leona’s just so. So...................................................... intricate.

I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface 🤡 but I hope that I’ve sufficiently conveyed a little bit of what goes on in my head when that hamster hops on its wheel and starts sprinting like its a marathon...

Ship opinion bingo: Lapis x Peridot, since you're the reason it's all over my dashboard lmao

First of all you’re welcome. Second of all

Lapidot actually has kind of a funny history in the fandom. Back when the show was first getting popular around seasons 1 and 2, Lapis and Peridot hadn’t had basically any interaction. They had barely even acknowledged each other’s existence, and it was certainly never in a romantic context. Lapidot was a crack ship that was really the peak of 2010s shipping humor. You’d see shitposts like “omg they were in the same shot 😍😍” “omg Lapis said Peridot’s name” “omg there’s a green and blue object in frame lapidot confirmed 💚💙💚💙”

At first I found the joke a little annoying and it got old fast. I remember all throughout season 2 I kept saying “oh my god shut up about lapidot it’s not funny anymore.” And then season 3 gets leaked airs and they actually start living together and they seem to want to get to know each other and it’s actually really cute. And now the show has been over for over 3 years and my brain just turns off every time I see them together (bruh they’re just such cute babies just look at them 🥺🥺🥺🥺). Their falling out later on is also really well done and poignant, but then their relationship after they reunite is literally just never addressed again? Which I’m sure could’ve been an amazing climax for their arcs together

I think this is a case of having two characters that are already really great and lovable and just putting them together. You have Peridot and her amazing redemption arc who went from a threatening villain to a cute companion who you can’t help but smile at every time she’s onscreen. Meanwhile you have Lapis who unfortunately doesn’t get as much focus but is still a beautiful character and has a really hard hitting arc when you really think about it. It’s really just two characters that you want more than anything to be happy and being a good fit for the other. Peridot is really eccentric and nerdy with a ton of energy and enthusiasm. Meanwhile Lapis is more relaxed and chill but she’s also angsty and even somewhat depressed or traumatized. These two personalities (combined with them both being immortal aliens with next to no knowledge of normal human culture/norms) therefore give you a ton of scenarios to put them in that range from fluffy and cute to ridiculous to really dark and moody

They also just have great character designs and there’s a ton of really cute fanart of them, both individually and together, and that’s probably also a big reason I’m still so into this ship all this time later. Perhaps people felt the need to make more fanart of them to compensate for the lack of focus (and resolution) the show gives them in the later seasons

I also find it very funny whenever fanart back from the old days pops up and their character dynamic is shown as being completely different, since back then Peridot was still a villain and Lapis had barely had any screen time, with Peridot as the serious grumpy one and Lapis as the goofy lighthearted one

This ship is always just such a sweet and heartwarming thing to come back to and look at after a long day to make me feel better. It’s a reminder that no matter how tired I am or what’s going on in my life, Lapis and Peridot are just hanging out in the barn doing whatever the fuck they’re doing

Take the design on this page for example. A technique that can be used to convey the delicacy and elegance of flowers could be adding ribbons to a fretwork.

Or perhaps these types of simple yet stylish designs over here aren’t too bad either. I think it would go well with everyday wear.

I remember playing the demo before they implemented the proper countdown for performances and he gave me 3 in a row without any breaks, so I got annoyed. Now, I really like him tho, so just like my opinion on Mortimer, things change :)

Carrying her around in a handbag like a tiny dog goes under the same as blorbo tbh. But like, she’s tiny enough to be in a handbag so I think I’m justified here /hj

She has her deep moments, especially in the first game. But there’s definitely more to her. Like I don’t like the old Game Theory video on how she is a “double agent”, but I find it plausible. She definitely has generational trauma on top of her own trauma, so yeah, ouch.

My own issues would be abandonment issues, trust issues and being clingy. Like, you can’t tell me this sweetheart gremlin wouldn’t be the clingiest little thing, and I love her for that. Yes I am mentally ill about her /affectionate

Okay so I know she got a lot of screen time in the first game, being sewn on to your hand and all, but I want more of her :( Lovely that she showed up in Midnight Show (I started crying when she did), but again, I wanted more. It was the right amount of screen time tho for Midnight Show for the right effect, and every hint to her inclusion was very good

Honestly, Scout could tell me she burned down an entire country and I would still be like “okay, you did nothing wrong, they probably deserved it” /hj And jokes aside, nothing in canon shows her to be evil and having done anything wrong, like she describes herself as “less evil” and only in the trailer for the first game. So yeah, Scout has done nothing wrong (I will fight you on this MatPat)

King Boo

Looks cute but will absolutely destroy anyone that harms his little Boo's. He's a fun villain with a fun design to him. A good story going on so far! I like what's going on with him and Luigi. Along with other villains that Luigi's met. Luigi and Boo are the opposite of Mario and Bowser. I love playing any level with King Boo and Luigi. They're both fun. Would've also loved seeing Antasma come back and team up with King Boo. A fitting team of horror to take down Luigi and Mario. A real Nightmare they'd be!

Antasma

I just think he's neat with an interesting backstory...I mean a hint of it really I think. Antasma's got a cool design and powers to him. I can't remember too much of the game but it looked fun and I loved seeing Antasma on screen. I'm sad he died off. Characters like him should stick around longer. Him, King Boo and Dimentio are like Bowser in a way. You just hope to see more of them.

Dimentio

Let me start by saying: Dimentio is french....okay? FRENCH. He's not british Lmfao. I've seen some people FOR SOME REASON mistake him for being british. Through out the game he speaks french!!

.....Anyway, he's a great character and I think he had a fitting bittersweet end really. But I can also see another version of him coming around to Mario's world and trying to screw things up for them. Maybe this other version can get a redemption arc. I can see him helping out Rosalina since she helps create new worlds which is what the other Dimentio wanted to do but that one nearly destroyed everyone in the process. I wonder if he'd look a bit like NiGHTS? Or a Kirby looking character. Would also be neat to see him with King Boo and Antasma too. Those three teaming up together would probably, in a way, be another NiGHTS game.

anyway, here's what i think about your milgram ocs!

HARUTO >>>> no really i love him a lot! his design is so 💕💖💞💓💗 he sure is a pretty boy! he's very fun to draw and i like how he actually looks like a guard in that picrew!

now, about his personality. i love how chill and relaxed he is, his personality is like a nice break from those guards who take their job much more seriously (*ahem* es, eiji and miki). it's really cool how he understands that all of this is some kind of experiment too, because again, those guards believe that milgram is always right no matter what and never (or rarely) question it. i find very interesting how he's so unpredictable, but his verdicts also sound.. reasonable? (well, if we're talking about the canon ones) like he doesn't jump to conclusions and also his decisions are understandable. and it feels refreshing to see a character who's an amnesiac, but doesn't really care about his memories and who he really is. i have this theory that haruto was, like, a completely average person and his memories really aren't that important, but maybe he was "chill" in a different way, like maybe he was just very apathetic? maybe that's why he has a feeling that his memories don't really matter? i'm very excited to see him in season 2! maybe he will get some character development?

ichiro!! my son!! my blorbo!! i would be terrified of him irl but i still relate to him a completely normal amount okay, okay, gonna be honest, i didn't know what to do with him when you posted his poll, like, at the same time i don't think forgiving him is the best decision, but also.. it's complicated, like, i think i need more info about him and his crime.

i love how he just goes with the flow and doesn't really care about anything and the fact that he likes to draw makes him even more cute <3 his mood swings make him more realistic too, like he's not just -_- most of the time, like he's actually a very emotional person!

about the "part of a dynamic" part, i just think that even though ichiro's personality is what makes him unique, when it's just him, there's not much to talk about, i guess? like i think his personality truly stands out when he's interacting with someone else. i still like him a lot though!

akane!! i don't have much to say about her, but i really do think she's innocent, at least right now, and as i've said before, i thought that an innocent verdict could "calm her down" and make her open up a bit more, also i just don't think her crime was that bad, like i think you said it was self-defense in some way? even if it wasn't, i really don't think that akane is a type of person who would kill someone for no reason at all and i trust her. also i really like her cuter tsundere side too, hehe <3 i would still find her intimidating irl though.

also i really like the parallels between ichiro and akane, like, the first one still acts like a small child, meanwhile the other one is more mature (even though she doesn't seem like it at first?), it's like.. both of them are coping in a different way, i guess? makes me think about haruka and yuno too.

i think you've said that suzume is that one oc you've struggled with the most and tbh i think i can see that? not in a bad way, of course, it's just.. she kinda has that energy, like, she was added later than everyone else, i guess? like at the same time i really like her but i don't have that much to say about her? i do have my theories though and also her mv is one of my favorites! really wanna draw something based on it when i have the time, hehe.

again. i would be too scared of him to talk to him if i ever met haku irl. i can't describe it, it's just.. the vibes are weird. like i voted him innocent, mostly because i just felt like it would be weird for me to vote him guilty when i don't even know anything about his crime *insert kei's 100% guilty rate joke here* also. i might be wrong and i won't be surprised if i am wrong, but. is it just me or haku's brother's vibes are weird too. like i don't wanna say he manipulated him or something but like. i feel like there is a reason why haku was so loyal to him and it's not necessarily "oh, you know, they are family, they're very close and all", i feel like it goes deeper than that and it's actually darker. i may be overthinking it though.

YUI!!! one of my faves, honestly. probably because i had a long idol/music games and anime phase. i love her design a lot, she's very pretty!! she's such an interesting character too, because like.. at the same time the fact that she refuses to admit the fact that she's a murderer annoys me a bit also come on her milgram cover is inmf, but also i kinda believe her? like maybe it wasn't an accident, but an indirect murder? like she really was the reason why her victim died, but it's not like, you know, she did it with her own hands. that would be so embarrassing though, like she's really not doing well because of her guilty verdict right now and then it turns out that it really was an accident 😭 very excited to see her go crazy <3

listen. again. sorry for mentioning their designs all the time, i'm that kind of person who cares a lot about the visuals, but i really like rin's design! he's very cute!

(also a note: i actually can imagine all your ocs as milgram characters? like they have the perfect designs for that, i think. like they're not too bright and colorful, but they're still easy to remember and i think that's cool and they fit the whole milgram aesthetic really well! like, i wanted to try and draw my ocs in milgram art style, but i kinda gave up because i couldn't imagine them actually looking like milgram characters at all djdkslsl)

but when it comes to his other traits.. i really don't have much to say? like seriously, if i had a chance to talk to him, i would just go "get over it" sjhskaslsls. i have no idea what that girl did, like maybe she started dating someone or simply spending more time with someone, but come on, dude, get up, this is embarrassing. him being the youngest prisoner doesn't help his case either, like i can't take his crime seriously at all, i'm sorry :'D but who knows, maybe he'll turn out to be the most scary and dangerous prisoner here!

noa is another forgettable one for me, i'm sorry djfhnkdsl. i have a habit to refer to noa and suzume as a set, like, you know, sad girls who have some kind of love-related problems. it doesn't mean i don't like noa though! i just really don't know much about her and i don't know what to say about her. i would love to learn more about her relationship with her husband though and like.. how and why her whole crime even happened. and it's nice to see that your prisoners have a good older sister figure here if we don't count her using alcohol as a coping mechanism <3 her dynamic with rin is cute too!

OHHHH kiyoshi is a difficult one. like i voted him innocent (i think so? i don't remember that well actually), but.. i can't help but feel like something is wrong. like i really can't believe that it was just "self-defense". come on, his song title is literally "true colors", THERE MUST BE SOMETHING. but if he's just obsessed with justice or something and he saw what he did as self-defense, i won't be surprised. and the fact that he's more cheerful now also makes me feel like kiyoshi has a darker side that he hasn't shown yet. like don't think i will go easy on you this time, old man, i'll be watching you very closely <3 (also i remember you saying that riku and kiyoshi would get along well? i wonder what you meant by that.. maybe it was about the "everyone relies on them, but they can't rely on anyone" bit?)

and another one with scary vibes jsjksklsls maybe i'm just not a fan of characters who kill for justice, their morals or what they think is "right"? like something about that sounds messed up to me. and yes, i voted mayumi guilty AND I DON'T REGRET IT OKAY. sure, maybe your patient was a criminal, but again, you're a nurse and you should do your job. don't think that you have the right to decide his fate or anything like that. i'm sure mayumi really had good intentions and she really is a kind person, but yeah, right now i can't say she's innocent or that i'm planning to forgive her in season 2.

for the bingo, thoughts on Yuki and maybe Kenta too if you want??

YUKI - i love him!! my smart son. i was honestly really interested in how they were gonna use yuki's cool astrological knowledge when he first appeared. my thoughts on yuki changed a bit when i learned that he was an ancestor, but nonetheless, i still appreciate his character. i do wish that there was a little more elaborated for him; he seemed to kind of pop up conveniently to explain the phenomenon and had a dislike of kyoya (which was honestly pretty funny. kyoya was a major asshole this whole arc). i also really like yuki's design; but i do think he does kind of work better as a dynamic instead of a whole character because we never..really see him again afterwards- also, i think anubis is cool as fuck

his relationship with kenta seemed more defined than the rest of them, kenta was looking to become a legendary blader that the team could depend on; which .. boom! yuki was right there. i feel like he was kind of a placement for kenta to look up to and explain everything going on. a trait i really like in yuki is his determination, even though he would fail, and i liked seeing that dynamic with him and gingka + ryuga! i wish that there was more.. elaboration with yuki but overall i think he's really cool and definitely goes on my "fictional children i'd adopt" list

KENTAA... AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHUH!!! i have so much to say about him. he's literally my baby boy. my TOP son. for starters, the second kenta showed up, i knew i'd love him. i really liked the main character approach they were going for him, it led to a really nice introduction to the rest of the characters and we got to see kenta grow in the process!! kenta's growth is so insane to me, he literally is just baby boy in the start and he's a strong but still kind kid at the end of it. kenta's got a lot of really great characteristics and is overall a really nice and sweet kid for his age and plays fair, and knows what is right. he's also really good at seeing good things in people (cough ryuga) and i really loved seeing kenta become more independent and determined to become stronger.

kenta's journey in believing in himself and being stronger with his friends is such a great arc. he learns how to fend for himself and take control of his situation and detach from gingka a bit, which helps him depend more on himself and have more belief in himself which is really great for him. his goal to become a legendary blader was both courageous but also kind of sad? like if he didn't become one, then he wasn't useful - which was proved wrong eventually but it honestly was a relief seeing kenta move away from that goal for a bit. i think my favorite scene of kenta is when he's crying to ryuga about how he's not some big strong guy but he needs to be and it broke my heart so much tbh but showed something that needed to be spoken out about kenta and how low his confidence was. he grew stronger by being with ryuga and could eventually regroup with the rest of his team, and it's a character arc he really needed and i personally don't wanna change at all. they did his character really well and is able to be a standalone character tbh

i do think too that it's cute how the second any mean character sees kenta they like him immediately. like kenta just has that kind of charm. in conclusion,

Although it is true I can give her any traits and story, I mostly go according to her beginnings and others depiction of her. I usually do her either determined, strong and friendly, or a bit reclusive, melancholic, but still nice and trying her best. And I guess her DS cute version would also be a little lazy lol

I find her design cute, but a part of me thinks she could have, well, more. I guess I just want to see her with a design similar to everyone's remake style, or Yuuto and Naomi's design. Something I'm actually trying to make, ehe✨

The most creature <3. Definitely my fave, or at least tied with triffy. She is so much to me. Her design is hands down the CUTEST. Both 2d AND 3d. Her voice is great, her lines are great, she is great. Surprising to me a little bit, since I wasn't always one to like Mean Girl characters like her but she's too cute. Also her issues with trusting people, struggling with genuine kindness and sincerity from others to the point that she ends up pushing people away, just to protect herself. Wow. It's done quite well for the most part and I would be lying if I said I didn't relate to her distrust of certain people and their intentions, at least a little bit. A bad person who I want to see be better and achieve friendship and love and care, because she absolutely can do it, with the right guidance. That's why her little credits picture, with her on the phone and the scrapbook for her new friends and memories, makes me the happiest. She's a mean girl, who has a strong sense of justice, and goes out of her way to give those who do wrong what they "deserve". She says LOL and OMG and totes and like, but she is cunning, she knows people and knows her way around them (also she reads books and in cartoon logic, that means you're smart 😏). She is everything. I will throw her around and squish her like a ball, and I will hug her forever. This is easily my most biased/opinionated answer yet

This is going to sound so bad out of context, but I LOVE dead children.

... in fiction only, of course! It legitimately opens up many interesting avenues of discussion and exploration within the stories they exist in. This holds true for Ortho and the role he plays in Idia’s life, and especially in episode 6′s main conflict. Episode 6 didn’t really focus as much on Ortho’s inner thoughts as much as it did for Idia’s, but I could only imagine what kinds of existential questions and dread were swirling around in Ortho’s circuit boards before and during his decision to act outside the bounds of his programming.

I think that a lot of people underestimate Ortho because he’s technically younger than everyone else at NRC, or because he’s a robot rather than a living being, but it’s because of his youth and his status as an inorganic being that makes him so much deeper than you may think he is. Imagine being Ortho, who exists solely as an entity to help someone else cope with loss. You’re hyper aware of what your purpose is, that you’re just imitating someone else, that you’ll never truly be loved and never truly be able to replace what was lost. And yet... you still want to help that person you call your creator and your brother, because you just want to see him happy, because even if Idia doesn’t have faith in his future, Ortho always will have that faith for him. MAN, IT JUST BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE WHENEVER I THINK OF IT 😭

Pre-episode 6, I still loved Ortho because having a little kid in the cast really shakes things up! I He has an air of innocence and the curiosity of a child, but also processes data in a very cold and calculating way... like the robot that he obviously is. That contrast is just so cool, and it made me get really invested in learning more about Ortho and why he is the way he is. DJIASBSODIABD S THIS MIGHT ALSO SOUND KINDA SUS BUT I THINK IT’S HILARIOUS THAT HE HOLDS THE SCHOOL AT GUNPOINT JUST TO SAVE HIS BROTHER 🥺 That’s how you know it’s true familial love, when you threaten to laser beam a building full of innocent bystanders to the ground to force them to rescue your family 💞 And because Ortho is a kid, his mischief comes off as cute, well-intentioned mistakes rather than the purposeful dick moves most of the rest of the boys pull off. I WOULD HAPPILY EXCUSE ORTHO OF ANY CRIMES HE COMMITS 😤 BUT FUCK EVERYONE ELSE. I just wish people would overlook him as a character just because he’s a kid 😓

If there’s one major gripe I have about pre-episode 6 Ortho, it’s that he didn’t seem very... well-defined, if that makes sense? Like, the vast majority of the time I saw him, it was in some relation to his brother. It felt like Ortho couldn’t really act or do anything on his own without somehow being tied back to Idia or having to ask for Idia’s help (and in hindsight, I completely understand why this may have been intentional, because it made the payoff in episode 6 so much more impactful). I’m SO glad the Ortho-Idia dynamic was improved and that my precious robot son can finally be free to do whatever he damn well pleases 🥺 When I saw Ortho in his College Gear for the first time... man, I felt like a proud parent that had just witnessed my one and only child’s graduation ceremony................................

JUST SO I CAN END MY THOUGHTS WITHOUT SOBBING ON MY KEYBOARD, I want to say that Ortho has some of THE best outfits in the entire game. I don’t care what anyone else says, the fact that Ortho is a robot adds to (NOT detracts from) his wardrobe. He can’t wear “normal” clothes like everyone else, so it forces the TWST devs to get very creative when designing Ortho’s equivalents. He can have all these extra functions and attachments that no one else has because he’s a robot, and that really enhances his ensembles. His coolest look by far has to be the Fairy Gear; it’s so fancy ✨ Plus, the outfit holds a lot of character significance, seeing as 1) it’s designed by Crewel rather than Idia, his usual designer and 2) Ortho puts the outfit together himself AND comes up with a special addition to his routine using it, all WITHOUT Idia’s help. The Fairy Gear helped cement Ortho’s new identity, and his special place in my heart.

I apologize to all Jack stans, but he is just not that memorable to me. I think part of the issue is that Jack doesn’t have a clear connection to a particular Disney character or even a group of characters, unlike Leona (who is twisted from Scar) Ruggie (who is twisted from the 3 hyenas). For a game that so heavily markets itself using the Disney logo and its properties, it’s so odd to me that Jack doesn’t seem to be based on any particularly prominent wolf characters across the plethora of things The Mouse owns. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course! It just makes it difficult for my brain to remember Jack 💦 especially when he’s competing with Leona, who has the most powerful presence in Savanaclaw, and Ruggie, who I find to be much more adorable.

Inspiration for Jack aside, I don’t care for his design. I don’t mind a character with an intimidating looking face, but I don’t like how muscular he is or the weird spiky haircut he has (which???? I think is a mullet in the back????). To me, Jack’s best physical attribute is his fluffy tail, but I stop short of wanting to actually touch it or to pet him because he’s a wolf 😔 which is closely related to dogs... and I’m scared of dogs asdhlabyafibifabispfossdipb SORRY JACK

In terms of his actual role in the main story, I thought that he was severely lacking and didn’t fully meet my expectations. I was under the impression that the first years in particular would play major roles, with Ace and Deuce being the main duo tagging along with MC. However, to me it really felt like Jack was just... there, not contributing much and not saying much either. He did do important things in episode 2 (namely telling MC and co. about Leona’s plans), but I thought the way his unique magic was introduced was kind of ham-fisted and could have been executed better. It also did not help that episode 2 had the weakest storytelling out of the entire main story, so whatever Jack did happen to do didn’t get the proper chance to shine because of how poorly constructed the events surrounding him were. I don’t know, maybe Jack just generally came off as having no presence because he’s more of a stoic character that prefers to keep to himself rather than actually interact with others 💦

When Jack returned in episode 3, I felt that his role was greatly diminished and he didn’t offer much to the team despite being present. Ace was the distraction while people snuck into the museum, the Savanaclaw mob students helped overtake the Mostro Lounge while Ruggie swiped the key they needed off of Azul, and Leona stole the contracts. Compared to all of that, Jack kind of felt like more of a detriment than a help (for example, Azul spotting Jack’s tail when the were hiding after breaking into his office), or just generic extra muscle they needed around. I know there’s more to Jack’s character than that, but the main story certainly isn’t doing him any favors. Epel not only got more screen time in episode 5 AND episode 6, but also actively contributed to the VDC team and the rescue team; I wish that Jack had been allowed to do just as much.

Outside of the main story, I still don’t find him to be very interesting. Like... yes, I get that he’s a Good Boi (TM) beneath his scary face and standoffish “lone wolf” attitude, but I don’t find that alone to be compelling. I’m just not a fan of the “looks like he can kill you, but is actually a cinnamon roll” trope in general, so ashdbasoidbapds Jack unfortunately hits a lot of the points I dislike.

If it’s of any consolation, I do think that he’s substantially more interesting when he’s interacting with others (particularly when it’s a really REALLY shitty person, because then we get to see their personality and Jack’s clashing). One of the few things I do like about Jack is his strong moral conviction; it’s fascinating to see how that plays out with the scummier characters in the cast and how Jack vows to stick to his moral compass and live up to his promises even if they are for people he thinks are sketchy (like when he works for the Mostro Lounge to atone for trashing some of Jade’s mushrooms). Jack also has no issues calling others out on their bullshit (ie fake Octavinelle’s crying, Ace heckling him, Leona’s foul play in episode 2, etc.); it’s these moments that I really enjoy and wish that we got more of. I don’t necessarily think Jack is “wasted potential” (which is why I didn’t check that box off in the Bingo board for him), because I can’t think of what exactly is “missing” or could make him ‘better” in my eyes. I think the TWST team definitely did try to make Jack loveable but it just fundamentally does not appeal to me.

Rayyan Nadeem

He looks really cool! Brown and purple go surprisingly well on a character design.

I really don't have much to say about him though. When you see an emotionless character, you expect them to have some kind of sad backstory as to why they started repressing their emotions, but from what I've read from Rayyan's profile so far, he seems to have lived a decent life and is just naturally 'emotionless'.

(His friendship with Slyvan is really cute though! I think they compliment each other well.)

Elliot

He looks so cool! There are plenty of black haired and red eyed characters out there to make them look 'evil' or 'scary', but Elliot's ears and tail give him a cuter vibe than his design counterparts that I really like!

I already got a taste of his backstory, but I'm still curious! How does he feel about being a servant to the Shroud family? Does he feel trapped like Jamil, or is he resigned to his fate already? What about his parents and guardians?

Noah Caspian

Ajsuunfusbis Him and his grey streaks of hair. So cute. I bet he has the cutest pouting face too! Also, maybe its just the picrew, but he looks like he has such chubby cheeks and I- 💓

I'm just joking about the 'everyone but me is wrong about them <3' of course, but Noah has the kind of personality that I'm pretty sure I have a good grasp of, making him the first oc of someone else that I'm confidant enough to write about. 💀

He seems tough according to his profile, but his weakness to other people crying and the way he is so flustered around Zoya makes it hard for me to actually take him seriously. 💀💀💀 He's just too cute in his own tsundere way. I love him so much, Bree.

Damien Draconia

I'm gonna be honest. *Inhales* Maybe its just the picrews, but Damien's hairstyle doesn't look good to me. 😭 I think it would be better if he let his hair down.

Asdisnidnsincis He seems very cute in personality though! Like the kind of leader figure that's soft but not a total pushover. I would love to read some interactions of him with Leona, Kalim, and all the other dorm leaders just to see what their dynamic would be like. The thought of it certainly intrigues me.

Ohhhhhh his specialty though! 👀 The idea of him having a dangerous power that he doesn't actually want and is constantly keeping it in check so that he doesn't hurt anyone is so 👌👌👌. (Also, he and Emile are very different in that regard. No I will not elaborate.) He's a good person that risks being corrupted because of something he was born with. Or maybe he's trying to do good because of his specialty? Hnggg the angst potential!
