Hello! Welcome to the fourth installment of the State of The Starry Path and the first one in March! I thought about doing a monthly wrap up but considering I didn’t get much done in February, I decided against it. OKAY NOW ONTO THE UPDATE!

Mini Life Update

It feels like I have so little time these days. I needed to help do some fixes for the main assignments of my capstone project so that took up most of my time and energy for the first part of the week. Then I was focused on assignments for my other classes for the rest of the week and before I knew it, it was Friday again. Man, I wish I had more time in general. 

On the bright side, I will be on break for next week! I can finally relax and take some time for myself. While I will need to do some school related things during my break, the fact that I do not need to go to class means I can focus on relaxing, playing video games, and content creation of course!

Content Creation Progress Update

So I ended up not really thinking about content creation at all this week. I feel terrible about it but what can I do besides move forward? Thankfully, I will be off of school for the following week so I can get some work done on YouTube videos.

This Week’s Goals

Make an ideas list and write down a minimum of 5 ideas: This goal is a holdover from last week but since I will not be in school, I will have more time to devote to it this week. 

Choose 1 idea and start a video script for it: Once I finish writing down some ideas, I’m going to choose one and start writing a script for it. Unfortunately I won’t be able to record any audio or gameplay because I won’t have my main PC with me, but 

Research editing software: I’m going to look for a free or low cost editing software that I can use to make videos. Even though I won’t be able to test it while on my break, I can still install it when I come back to my PC. 

This Month’s Goals

Make one YouTube video: I want to make a Youtube video this month even if it’s terrible. The majority of the weekly goals are going to be focused on this for the month.

This Year’s Goals

Get monetized on YouTube: I want to eventually make money off of my content so I’m hoping to get monetized on YouTube this year. This is going to be a tall order, but I hope I can keep working towards this with my weekly and monthly goals!

Become an Affiliate on Twitch: Despite making Twitch less of a priority, I still want to be able to become an affiliate on Twitch. While I do need to find a way to meet the seven days streaming requirement, I want to be able to draw in viewers first. 

Gain 100 followers on any social media besides YouTube or Twitch: I actually am over halfway to 100 followers on Twitter as of writing this, but I still don’t get a ton of engagement on my post. In addition, most of the followers I have gotten are those annoying GFX bots and it’s a little bit disheartening. I also want to build up a following on Tumblr and Bluesky as well! 

Make a community Discord server: Once I build up a community, I want to create a Discord server for people to hang out in. However, I want to wait until there is a demand for a Discord server. This goal is lower priority compared to the other goals but I hope that this does end up happening this year!

Final Thoughts

I can’t wait to be able to relax and not have to think about school all the time this week. Hopefully this month I can hit the ground running and actually be able to finish the goals I set out for myself this week. Also I do want to make an announcement regarding streams for the next couple of weeks. I will not be streaming tomorrow or next Saturday. Since I am planning on going back to my parent’s house, I will need to spend tomorrow preparing for the drive there and then the following Saturday is when I’m planning on coming back, so I do not want to pressure myself to get back in time for a stream. My next stream will be on Saturday March 16th at 2 PM EST. However, I will make sure to write a blog post for next week! Anyway, I hope your stay was bright and your journey is filled with light!

1. Planning

Since this was for the March GIF Challenges I hosted, I already had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted. This was for the “Overlays & Blending” week, in which I wanted to practise more with different types of overlays. The easiest one to work with, for me, is with clear silhouettes, so the scenes I chose for the challenge deliberately had light backgrounds.

What I wanted to fill the silhouettes with, I had literally no idea of. I needed scenes that showed close ups of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s faces, and I wanted something I could add a lot of colour to. Eventually I chose the Jingshi scene, because the snowy effects are very pretty.

Finding the right scenes always takes up several days: I just don’t always have inspiration for it!

I never write down my ideas either! I do keep a post-it of “GIF ideas”, but I hardly ever refer to it 😅 Luckily, the mdzsnet has lots of events and challenges to keep me inspired ♡♡

2. Creation

The tools I use to make gifs are Mirillis Action! and Adobe Photoshop CC 2014. The reason I’m using Action! is because I previously did video editing, and I try to keep the process similar. I find it’s a good recording software, and it’s easy to use - whether what I’m giffing is a video file or a yt video, I can always use the same method.

When I make a difficult set, I usually also use Sony Vegas Pro to make a mock-up: tossing my video files in there doesn’t take up any time, and it’s easier to try out lots of different scenes. If I had to import all those into Photoshop first, it would take forever!

In Photoshop, I import “video frames to layers”, add my sharpening and colouring, etc. For this particular set, I’ll break it into steps:

Step 1: making the silhouette

I’ve made a tutorial for this effect here, but I can give a short rundown: you have to make sure the figure you’re making into a silhouette just becomes as dark as possible, while the background is as evenly light as possible.

I’ve used curves, levels, selective colour, and black & white to turn it into this. There’s some masking involved as well!

Step 2: background

Well, this one simply took some trial and error. Eventually I found the Jingshi scene to work the best here. Import the new gif, then drag it into the same file. IMPORTANT: you have to set the blending mode of the gif you’re overlaying it with to “Lighten”: this keeps the whites white, but fills all the blacks with whatever the gif is made of. It’ll look like this:

At first, this is where I left it at, but when I found I couldn’t get the LWJ counterpart to match up with snow and pretty background, I decided to add another gif! (at this point, I had to save the file as a .psb, oops)

Step 3: another background

I imported another gif, once again set the blending mode to “Lighten”, then added some colour (to the gif and to the white background) until the result was this:

3. Posting

I usually post the moment I’m done creating LOL, I really don’t have the patience to put things in drafts!! I add the standard creation tags for The Untamed (or whatever I’m giffing for), and self-reblog it once or twice on the first day. Finally, if I really like the set, it becomes my new Pinned Post for a while!

Studio Final Project Week 4 - branding, market research, and design

In our studio class today we were promoted to create a timeline from now until the submission date, and it quickly became apparent that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Carrying on with our first bad research from yesterday, throughout the studio session we asked other students and lecturers to try the different sizes of cubes and pyramids we had created yesterday and for their feedback on their preferred size for each along with their preferred size and shape overall.

By the end of the day, we had gotten 20 opinions, with the most popular choice being the 3.5cm cube shape. Thus, we’ll likely use those dimensions for our 3D modeling, but still plan to get more opinions with time.

During our user testing for the dimensions, someone *get their name* brought up the idea that it may be beneficial to user test people’s preference for fidget modules as well. This is worth considering, and we’ll try to do something in that vein. The reason we hadn’t fully considered it is that the whole point of having a modular device is that the user gets to choose the elements that go on to it. They customize the final product to their liking. But, for all these modules to be compatible with all cubes, they need to fit all the side slots, hence the cube/pyramid base has to be a fixed size, which is why we created the different size prototypes to gauge which one is most preferable to the most people.

We also had a look at some second-hand research to gauge the market to see if there even was an interest in fidget toys and what that trajectory was. It would be wasteful to conceptualize an idea that doesn’t have any signs of demand. (This is a generalization of course as people can be turned around, but it does help to know people have some sort of a preexisting interest in the area of what you’re making.) From our brief search, we came across this graph, which does indicate a significant year-on-year increase in fidget toys. More research still needs to be done, but this looks to be a promising start.

We also thought about our name and logo. For now, we’re still sticking with the name EcoFidget, but may change it in the future should something slicker come up.

As seen from these scans, we drew out a couple of logo ideas and even considered a little fidget mascot. We wanted the logo to incorporate the modular element, but having the sides rise off, as this is effectively the product's main differentiating feature and selling point. The cube mascot was another interesting addition, and something that could be taken a lot further should this product ever eventuate. It would be great to have the mascot animate in an advert to introduce it, as this is a product that could very possibly appeal to younger people. But, the design isn’t childish to the point where it’s off-putting for older customers.

We also considered the connectivity of our modules some more as seen in the sketch above. Our two main ways of connection are magnets and a clip. Magnets are more seamless, but this is still under consideration.

We then thought about when we will eventually have to 3D print our hi-fi prototype and subsequent final product. We spoke with someone in the maker space and found out that we would have to install a software called Fusion 360. We did so and got to work on designing our starting cube, and then tried adding in an indent on a side that would house the module. The software was somewhat challenging to learn, and none of us have any experience with 3D modeling so this was just a start that will require more worn down the line.

We also received a tutorial on vector tracing through the use of Adobe Illustrate. The software wouldn’t install on my laptop so I worked with Connor. We took a photo of our modular cube prototype and then used vector tracing to trace around it to get a silhouette that we could use in a logo or an infographic that would be used for our final submission.

Up until this point, I had only considered regular photos for our final submission, but today the idea of adding in an infographic as one of those photos was introduced. This is an appealing idea as it would allow us to incorporate so much more information about how our product could be used than a simple image. Especially for a product like this, making sure the viewer understands the modular aspect of it is essential. So, we’ll definitely try to create an infographic using vector tracing that outlines how the product works as one of our photos.

Our group also discussed the video part of the submission. It had been in the back of our minds until now, and we thought it was to be more focused on explaining the final product. But, it turns out that the video’s purpose is to show the creation process of this project. Fortunately, these blogs can act as a skeleton for that video. I’m not overly experienced with video editing, but I did quite enjoy making the vlog so I’m happy to head this part of the project up. I’m thinking of keeping it relatively straightforward, focusing on the linear progression of this project. In hindsight, it would’ve been beneficial to consider the video a “making” from the beginning, as I would’ve filmed and narrated over more of our making phase as opposed to just taking photos. Alas, it looks like a large chunk of the video may have to be still moving images accompanied by music. We spoke to Rachel to clear this up and she says that that should be okay.

I’ve got to say though, that the realization of all the things that need to be done for this project submission, alongside our commitments to programming and ICT is quite daunting. So, going forward, I plan to try to come into university more often to get as much work done as early as possible to avoid a last-minute panic and break down before the submission

Hello hello and welcome to my channel! My name is Tiger and I use this channel to keep my gaming memories. I don't expect anyone to watch this series, but if you decided to check it out, I'd like to welcome you! I hope you enjoy this game as much as I do.

I wanted to start this series on the PC, but I don't know when I'll be able to buy the audio splitter that I need for my computer and there's no guarantee my mic will even work when I do manage to buy it, so I decided to just play this out on the PS4, which will be streamed since I don't have recording software. I'll be using a timer to keep the videos around 30 minutes long.

Now, this series will be a 100% playthrough. I've seen several of these floating around, but some of them leave out factions, others leave out the Daedra quests, some don't do locations. And in my opinion, that isn't a true 100% playthrough. In this series, my goal is to truly 100% the game by doing EVERYTHING - the main storyline, the war storyline, all of the guilds, the Daedra quests, discovering all locations, completing every single quest including the miscellaneous ones, and so much more. It's going to be a long ass ride, but I'm excited to discover this game in its entirety!

It may seem boring or stupid, but the point of this 100% playthrough is so I can take my time and enjoy the game as its meant to be enjoyed. It's such a beautiful game with so much content and such a rich story, I want to take my time and enjoy it while streaming so I can keep the memory. Who knows, maybe someone else will enjoy this adventure with me~

I should mention that I WILL be attempting to play the role of this character as if I AM her. If you've seen my Dark Brotherhood playthrough which, at this time, is currently on-going, you'll know that this is going to be cringy as fuck, but I'm going to try my best. I won't be skipping any of the dialogue, either. I AM using a few mods, but no over-powered or crazy ones, in my opinion. I'll drop those in the description so you can judge that for yourself. Most of them are just aesthetic mods~

Let's get started by meeting our main character and learning about her story!

∾ Backstory

My name is Auserie, or Aus for short. I was born on a cold, rainy night in Solitude's chapel to an Altmer woman named Erralaine Aedire. Everyone assumed I was fathered by her fiance, an Altmer man named Ondolemar, but they assumed wrong. My mother loathed Ondolemar, but the two had been set to wed since they were just infants, fresh out of their mother's womb. She tried everything to avoid this union, but her family would not let her get away. She a member of the Aedire, after all, a clan of Thalmor soldiers that served the Almeri Dominion without fail. In an attempt to comfort her, Erralaine's grandmother, a kind woman named Ley, tried to convince her that love would eventually blossom between them.

But how could love possibly blossom from such a deep hatred?

To Erralaine's surprise, love DID blossom, but not with Ondolemar. No, love came to her from a young Nord soldier fighting for the empire. Atarse Fire-Hair was one of three soldiers tasked with guarding Erralaine and her elder sister, Siranya, on their way to the Thalmor headquarters in Solitude. He was the youngest, not yet wise to the ways of the world, and he didn't hesitate to strike up a conversation with the two women. While Siranya ignored him, Erralaine was happy to be speaking to someone that was neither haughty nor rude. It wasn't long before the two of them fell in love and from that love, I was born.

No one but great grandma Ley knew of this secret, and she wasn't about to tell anyone. While Erralaine still was not happy with her husband, she acted out less with me around, but as I got older, I started to look more like Atarse and people started to notice. I was five the first time Ondolemar hit my mother, accusing her of being a harlot that slept around on him. He would have gotten rid of her, but she was currently with child and, according to the priestess of Arkay that often checked on my mother, she was due to have a boy.

This pleased him greatly and he kept his mouth shut, denying any allegations that were raised to him about my appearance. Exactly one year after my brother, Tusriil, was born, my mother came to me in the middle of the night, rousing me from my sleep. Even in my confused, half-asleep state, I recognized the urgency in her voice. She spoke to me in a hushed voice, telling me that everything would be okay. But it wasn't - at least not for her.

She snuck me out of Solitude with the help of a few Imperial soldiers, where I got onto a horse with a soldier whose name I was never given. He was kind, and I remember the soft smile he gave me and the protective way he held me as the horse started to trot away, leaving behind my mother and baby brother. At the time, I never thought I wouldn't see them again.

We rode on for nearly a day before arriving at a small shack northwest of Rorikstead where a red-headed man was waiting. I'll never forget the bright smile he offered me, his blue eyes full of happiness. I'll never forget how his expression darkened as he asked about my mother to the soldier, who shook his head. This man was Atarse Fire-Hair, my father, and this shack was to be my new home.

I later learned that, two days after I was smuggled out of Solitude, my mother was found stabbed through the heart. They called it a robbery gone wrong, but everyone that was involved knew better. It was no robbery, and it certainly wasn't an accident.

Despite missing my mother and brother dearly, I was happy with my father. He taught me how to use a bow and how to hunt for food, he read to me every single night, and he was there every time I had a nightmare. He was a damn good father, better than Ondolemar could even dream of being. I loved him dearly but, as he got older in age, he grew weaker and weaker until, finally, his body gave out on him and Shor carried his soul to Sovngarde.

For a while, I just sat within the shack and slept. I had no one and I felt so... lost. What was I to do with my life? But I knew neither of my parents would want me to suffer the way I was. They would want me to live, to experience life as I wanted to and, more importantly, to be happy. It was the toughest time of my life, but I took my father's bow and arrows, and I left the shack for the last time, not looking back.

For two years, I just wandered the land of Skyrim, living off the land and avoiding all major cities. While I did interact with some people, I much rather preferred to be with nature and with the wilds that lived within in. My life was peaceful and I was slowly beginning to recover from the loss of my father.

And then I got dragged down by being in the wrong place as the wrong time. I had been hunting near the border separating Skyrim from Morrowind when Ulfric Stormcloak, leader of the rebellion against the Imperials, appeared with a few of his soldiers in tow. I realized the situation and did not want to be swept up in their war, but it was too late - the Imperials ambushed them and I was captured as an accomplice, along with another man who had just been passing by at the wrong time.

While I did manage to escape losing my head, the situation in Helgen set off a chain of events that I know is going to alter my life, whether I like it or not. I'm not sure what path my life will go down and I don't really have a goal to go after, but I hope that by wandering through life, I will find my purpose. A small part of me wants revenge against Ondolemar, and another small part wishes to find my baby brother, but that's a can of worms I'm just not ready to open.

So, this is my story.

Some Thoughts About Antisepticeye:

I really like puzzles, mystery solving, & storytelling. I have no idea if anyone else has made these connections or publicly stated them. But I also might have an overactive imagination, which got me to start going down this rabbit hole. 

So when I think back to Seán saying that nobody has really figured out who or what Anti is, I got curious. Eventually (today-ish), my brain decided to take that as a challenge.

This may be a bit lengthy, so if you plan to read all of this: Buckle up, buttercups!

Now, I'm not usually one to try & actively theorize about this kind of stuff. But I love learning about lore & psychology! One thing I know is that there are a bunch of people in Seán's community who love to come up with theories about the egos, especially Anti (& I totally understand why, since Seán & Robin are pretty damn good at storytelling). One common thing that pops up is the idea that Anti is a glitch (bitch) or a demon. Or both. But because of what Seán said, either those ideas are incorrect or they’re not specific enough & we need to dig deeper. Like, much deeper.

One thing that caught my attention was a post on Tumblr (I included the link to it so it can be properly credited) that talked about the 1st time we actually see Anti's full body (the HTC Cubicle video) & how he 1st took over Jack's body VS. how he is able to do that now. But that's not the 1st time we see Anti or any hints of him at all! I looked into this by watching an edit someone made with (almost?) all of his appearances from the beginning of the channel up until the Bio Inc. Redemption video in 2017 (you can find this collection here). Obviously, Anti has made more appearances afterward, but I focused more on the early days for this as well as some of the more recent things Seán talked about regarding PMA & his mental health.

While I have met Seán in person (& can confirm that he gives amazing hugs!), I'm in no way involved in his personal life. So I could be wrong about some of the thoughts I have moving forward. I'm basically going by what I've seen & heard from videos, live shows, pannels, etc. & taking guesses based on that information & what I know about building/creating a character (I've done interactive theatre in different settings where I had almost total creative freedom in that with some guidance & training). I also can’t speak for Seán because...I’m not him.

I wouldn't doubt if any of Seán's egos came from very personal places, maybe some of them were made because of some silly idea that he decided to run with & build on. But Anti was possibly from a very personal place in Seán's mind (especially if this was one of the 1st egos he created).

And this lead to a thought that crossed my mind & started this whole dive into the rabbit hole:

What if Anti is a "glitch" in Seán's mental system?

Okay, hear me out on this:

We know there was a period of time where a bunch of YouTubers (including Seán) were creating evil versions/counterparts of themselves. I can't say how much thought was put into all of them (because again, I’m not them), but I don't doubt Seán thought this through A LOT because he's pretty damn methodical about what he chooses to show us (the audience). Meanwhile, Anti is chaotic, much harder to predict (especially because he's been much more careful about showing himself lately), & loves to fuck with everyone. But what about the character creation aspect of this? Where did Seán pull this character from?

My guess is that Anti is an embodiment of some of Jack's darker thoughts & feelings if they were more exaggerated or taken into a much darker, more sinister direction. Seán has talked somewhat openly about being depressed, sad, & lonely (particularly when he started making YouTube content). He has also talked about his fear of letting us down/failing us as a content creator, feeling that what he puts out there needs to be perfect, & the anxiety that causes him to feel sometimes. Just because the Seán/Jack we all know & love is kind, caring, & wouldn't want to harm anyone, doesn't mean he has never experienced some dark, scary thoughts. Especially if he's not kidding about having ADD or experiencing OCD-like symptoms (I'm only grabbing this from anytime he has says his "OCD kicks in" or talks about his "ADD" brain, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt that there's at least some truth to this). One thing I can say from personal experience is that when your brain is a hot mess & you have been through some shit (even if it’s just emotionally), it's hard to not have some dark & scary thoughts, which is why we try not to be alone with them.

And then there's Seán's interest in video games & computers. When you find a glitch in a game or software, it may or may not cause problems down the road (some of them are actually pretty funny & harmless!) depending on what happens next. You know what else runs on tiny pulses of electricity & some form of "wiring"?

Your brain!

In Jack's case: Those times when he was having negative feelings & thoughts could have opened a gateway for his "glitch/virus" (Anti) to work his way into Seán's brain wiring. You could go as far as to say that Anti is trying to crash the whole damn system! Trying to delete the "Seán/Jack" software & claim it for himself.

At 1st, Anti thought the easiest way to do that was to kill Jack (which he has tried at least twice now). But what if Anti realized at some point that if he was actually successful in killing him, there would be no "system" to take over because it would permanently shut down? And Anti may not have much interest in claiming a damaged body if there's a possibility he can keep it in the best condition possible.

So like anyone creating a computer virus or hacking into a system would do: Anti had to adapt & try a different approach. This could explain why when he last spoke to us (& anytime we see him afterwards), there was no throat slit or any injury to Jack’s body. Because Anti doesn't need to physically kill Seán. He needs to kill him mentally/emotionally! Which is slower, harder to pick up on, & potentially more effective in the long run because it builds up over time.

And being the glitch (bitch) that he is, Anti is slowly feeding off of Seán's doubts, fears, insecurities, etc. to become stronger than ever. Anti is slowly integrating his "code" in small fragments that are harder to find as deep & scattered as possible so then when they finally are able to fully connect & Seán is manipulated into the right mindset, Anti can hit the kill switch. And once he does that...it's hard to say what happens next.

We already know that Anti is able to physically project himself into our world. He actually may be doing exactly that or "hacking" into the other egos, manipulating his "puppets" (JJ; working on Chase; maybe Marvin?) in order to eventually get Jack to where he needs him to be mentally & emotionally in order to go for the "kill."

This could be where the events of the “Mayhem” videos come into play. Since Anti probably has JJ under his control already, Chase would obviously be the next best place to start. Chase’s state of mind is exactly what Anti is looking for & he knows exactly what buttons to push to use Chase however he wants to.

I’m not exactly sure how the “time is broken” concept plays into this yet (I honestly haven’t thought about that until later on as I finish writing this). Seán did mention that he’s really into sci-fi, space, things like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Anti’s appearances in the Observance videos are adding on to what has already been building. Maybe the egos are all fragments of how Seán might exist in alternate universes? Or how he imagines he would?

But I mostly focused on the early stuff because if we want to know (or continue guessing) who or what Anti truly is...it’s probably better to start from the very beginning.

As awesome as it would be to hit the nail on the head with this: I also understand that I might be completely wrong or going in the way off into the wrong direction with this. Hell, I probably dug WAAAYYY too deep for this one. But I didn’t want to let this fester (especially if I end up being right!) in my brain & I’m curious what others might think about this. And hey, it’s JUST a theory. A GAME Theory! An Ego Theory!

I Want It, I Got It: Chapter 26

Summary: Phil Lester was a worker for the BBC in London. Working in the advertising department, he was content being alongside his friend and fellow coworker PJ during every shift. However, the BBC is temporarily being used as a film set for a new movie staring Hollywood ‘It’ star, Daniel Howell. Being stuck as an extra on the set, Phil finds it’s hard to ignore the famous star. And maybe, just maybe, Dan finds it hard to ignore Phil as well.

The picture was spread over every corner of the world. Everywhere Phil looked, he saw the photo. It was so blurry and grainy but it was obvious who it was and it was obvious what was happening. Every time he looked at the photo, he felt sicker and sicker. 

The worst part was that he felt so powerless to everything. He felt absolutely powerless to anything that was happening and it was so far beyond their control. When he’d gotten off from the phone with Dan, he’d cried so hard that Spike barked at him and Phil had yelled for him to shut up and then immediately apologized. He’d held Spike close. He knew his crying was unsettling for his pup. 

He hadn’t bothered to call his mum back or Martyn. He didn’t even look at PJ’s text. A part of him believes that if he stops looking at his phone and seeing the photo, he can believe the photo never existed and this entire thing wasn’t happening. 

He was curled up on his bed when he heard Dan enter his flat a short time later. He could hear Dan’s footsteps walk around before they eventually walked to the bedroom. Phil looked up at him and immediately broke down into tears again at Dan’s puffy eyes and tear stained cheeks. 

“What are we going to do?” 

“Marianne is talking with the media right now to try and get the photo pulled. I have my entire team working individually to find the source of the photo so we can press charges.” 

“But that doesn’t solve our problem.” Phil says, reaching up and wiping his cheeks. 

“I know.” Dan says. “But there isn’t anything we can do right now.” 

Phil let out a long sigh. “So what are we going to do now?” 

Dan walked into the bedroom further and shrugged his shoulders. He took a seat on the edge of Phil’s bed and sniffled. “I actually don’t know.” 

“I don’t either.” 

“We could release statements and ask for privacy but…” 

“That doesn’t really work when our privacy has already been breached.” Phil says. 

Dan nods in agreement. 

“I never really planned for this to ever happen.” Dan says. “I should have been more careful. I knew how paparazzi liked to follow me around and I knew that they would eventually find out where I was but I still should have been more careful. It was my fault for kissing you in such an open setting.” 

“It’s not your fault.” Phil says. He actually believes―no, knows this too. He knows that this isn’t Dan’s fault and he doesn’t want Dan taking the blame for it. Not with all of this shit crumbling around them, he doesn’t need Dan to take the fall. 

“But it is.” Dan says. “It’s indirectly my fault and you can’t argue with it. I’m the one who is the celebrity, not you.” 

“But that isn’t your fault for what the paparazzi are doing to you―to us. They’re ruining our privacy and breaching our boundaries.” 

“I know.” Dan says. “And on top of that, I have that movie premiere tomorrow night and I’m going to have to show up since it’ll look fucked if I don’t. And when I get there, I’m going to bombarded by people and cameras and microphones and I’m going to have to bite my tongue to not tell them to get fucked.” 

“This is all such bullshit.” Phil says. 

Dan nods again in agreement. 

“What do you want to do?” Dan asks him and it catches Phil off guard. 

“I don’t know.” 

Dan lets out a watery sigh. “I told Marianne that I would travel back to LA tomorrow night immediately following the premiere. I need to sort things out back home.” 

“Okay.” 

“I’m sorry.” 

Phil reached out and put his hand on Dan’s arm. “Don’t apologize.” 

Dan laid down on the bed and rolled closer to Phil, bringing their bodies closer together. Phil wrapped his arms around Dan’s torso and pulled him close. 

They just laid in silence together. In the background, Phil could hear both of their phones going off, constantly vibrating from emails, missed calls, and texts. But right now, they just lay together, crying silently as they think about the future and what’s going to happen. 

They were just outed in front of the entire world. Phil wasn’t even out to some of his coworkers and past friends and now, his name is plastered on headlines as kissing Daniel Howell. He can only imagine what people must be thinking right now. He doesn’t even want to see his social media. He doesn’t want to see his Twitter or Instagram or even his YouTube channel. 

Whatever chance he had a normal life was just ripped away from him and he’ll never get it back. He’s always be known as the guy in the photo kissing Daniel Howell. 

They remain silent until Dan suddenly begins to kiss him and they find themselves getting heated. Just mere moments later, Dan is beneath him, spreading his legs open and Phil is stretching him open and pushing inside not long after. It’s a bit sad and Phil feels tears prick his eyes as he thrusts into Dan. But as his thrusting gets faster and Dan moans under him, he feels something deep and primal take over. 

This is the one thing they have between them that remains private. Sex will always be just for him and Dan to have. No one will be able to see Dan like Phil does. No one will see the way Dan shuts his eyes and bites his lip as he moans. No one will see what Dan looks like naked underneath them. 

This is just for Phil to see from now on and forever and he intends to eventually make that clear. 

Dan finishes before him but not long after, Phil pulls out and finishes on Dan’s belly. It was what he needed to feel the stress leave his body and he can tell Dan feels the same way as his muscles unclench in his stomach and back. They don’t even bother to clean up. They just lay down next to each other and fall asleep.

Phil calls in sick to work the next morning and then before Phil can really comprehend what the day is actually going to bring, Dan tells him that he needs to leave so he can go and get ready all day for the premiere that night. Their goodbye is much more bittersweet than when Phil left Los Angeles. There isn’t as many tears shed but it definitely hurts a lot more because Phil has no idea what the future is going to bring anymore. 

He’s lost. 

He’s completely and utterly lost. 

He sees Dan out with one last kiss goodbye and then Dan leaves out the door to a black cab with his suitcase and he’s gone once again out of Phil’s life. Phil doesn’t even know when he’s going to see Dan again and maybe that’s why this departure feels a lot more bittersweet. 

This was supposed to be his and Dan’s time to be together and it was ruined by the paparazzi and now they couldn’t enjoy what they wanted to. Phil has to figure out what to do while Dan goes to a movie premiere and then flies back to Los Angeles to figure out what he is going to do. 

He sits on his couch all day and ignores all of the phone calls that come in. He sends his mum and brother texts asking for some time to himself and then he turns off his phone and leaves it be. 

When he gets onto his laptop, he finds himself looking through his old footage of videos that he and Dan had filmed when he was in LA. He clicks through the videos and finds one of him and Dan doing a Q+A that they had asked questions for and finds himself importing the footage into his editing software and splicing it together. 

He works on that until its done and he honestly does not know how long it takes. He exports it and renders it and then he’s on his YouTube channel. Phil’s clicking on his profile and then he’s clicking on upload and suddenly he’s uploading the video and titling it. He adds in the description that this is the last video he’ll post for a while and then as it uploads, he watches the progress bar rise further and further to 100%. 

When it’s finished, he presses publish and takes a deep breath before closing his laptop and tossing it gently to the floor and laying on his side. 

He never sees what the reception of the video was. He never sees anyones reaction. He doesn’t even see what Dan says about the video because by the time he finally turns his phone on, the premiere for the moving is beginning and he’s watching it on his telly. 

Spike lays with him and they watch the TV as the hosts of the entertainment channel he stumbled upon talk about how it’s going to be a star studded night for the occasion and they were going to be covering some of the celebrities who were showing up to the red carpet. 

Phil watches curiously as all of the celebrities begin to arrive for the premiere and then suddenly a limo pulls ups and he see Dan step out with the help of a bodyguard. Phil watches with a tight throat as he sees all of the flashing lights flaring at Dan. He’s wearing a black pin stripe blazer with black pants and Phil thinks he looks stunning and he’s upset that he didn’t get the chance to tell Dan that himself. 

“Daniel Howell has just arrived to the red carpet.” The one host says on the TV. “He’s been the center of media headlines over the last couple weeks and there were talks that his appearance tonight would be up in the air.” 

The host suddenly walks over to Dan and Phil can see the fear that is registering over his face as the host points the microphone at him. “Hello, Dan! Do you care to tell us who you’re wearing tonight?” 

“I’m wearing Marc Jacobs.” Dan says with a smile. 

“Ooh.” She says. “We were all surprised to see you at the premiere tonight following the massive media attention in the last 24 hours.” 

Phil watches Dan’s smile falter and Phil wants to go through the screen and shake the host and scream at her that she shouldn’t be asking Dan that. But instead, he has to sit back and watch as Dan visibly recoils and then tries to answer. 

“Well, my friends all worked hard on this film and I’d been an extra on the set so it only feels right that I still come out and support them on such a great occasion.” 

Dan then turns away from the host and walks away and the host tries to play it off like that was what was supposed to happen and she turns back to the camera to speak about how Chris Hemsworth was arriving right about now to the red carpet. 

Phil reaches for the remote and flips the channel, finding a cooking show to watch instead as the bile rises in his throat.

Phil gets around to calling his mum before he goes to bed that night and he shares a  healthy cry with her over the phone. His mum keeps him calm and tells him that she’s spoken to someone to act as a publicist on his behalf and this time, Phil doesn’t argue with her about it. He needs the help. 

He hears from Dan when he leaves the premiere and heads for the airport and when he falls asleep that night, he’s convinced that Dan is on his flight back to Los Angeles. 

Phil wakes up from a restless sleep to his phone buzzing repeatedly on his night stand. He reaches for it and checks it and sees that is Dan wanting to Facetime. He looks at the time and notes that it is a little after 6am which means Dan is back in the USA by now. 

Phil answers it and Dan’s face pops up on the screen in front of him. His eyes are puffy and his cheeks red and Phil knows that there is something different―more tense―hanging in the air as Dan opens his mouth to speak. 

“We need to talk, Phil.” He begins. 

“Okay.” Phil chokes out. 

“i’ve been doing some thinking and…” Dan’s voice breaks. “I think we should take a break.” 

Phil feels his heart shatter as if someone just took a sledgehammer to glass but he tries his best to hide it despite his vision blurring. 

“I don’t want to do this.” Dan says, his voice continuing to break as he speaks. “But I think it’s for the best if we take the time apart to let this situation clear and then we can try again.” 

“Okay.” 

“This isn’t a break up.” Dan reassures. “This is just a break, okay?” 

“Okay.” 

“Can you please say something else?” Dan pleaded. 

“What do you want me to say?” Phil says. “I think a break is a good thing too.” Phil lies. 

“Are you…are you sure that’s how you feel?” Dan asks. 

Phil nods, a tear suddenly sliding down his cheek and landing on his neck. 

“Fuck, this is so much harder than I wanted it to be.” Dan says, his voice hoarse. 

Phil can see that he’s crying silently to himself. 

“I think it’s best too if we try and remain as low as we can about each other.” Dan says. “I think we shouldn’t try to contact each other for the next few days and we should just try and let this situation be pushed on.” 

Phil turns his head and tries to hide the fact that a sob is threatening to break through his mouth. “Okay.” 

“This isn’t easy for me, Phil.” Dan says. “I love you so damn much, okay and that’s why I’m doing this.” Dan sniffles. “It’s just until we can figure out what we can do in the future.” 

Phil just nods and pulls his lips into a tight line as he looks at the screen through a clouded gaze. Dan brings his hand up and wipes off his face. 

“I didn’t want it to come to this.” 

“Me either.” Phil says. 

“But it’s just until the media blows over. I promise.” 

Phil nods and Dan tries to give him a sympathetic smile but it falters and crumbles as he wipes off the new tears from his face. “It’s late there and I know you’re supposed to be sleeping so I’ll let you go.” 

Please don’t go. 

“I love you.” Dan says before he shifts just a bit on camera. “Bye, Phil.” 

The call ends and Phil feels his heart shutter into millions of unfixable pieces. He drops his phone to the other side of the bed and curls onto his side as he pulls his knees up to his chest and lets go all fo the sadness from the last few days.

Anxious

Summary: It can be hard to identify anxiety sometimes, which makes it harder to deal with. Sometimes, Phil needs a little help to pull himself out of it.

Author’s Note: This is based off some of my own experiences with anxiety, but this is not the only way it presents itself. This is not to say that Phil does have anxiety or to try to assume his experiences if he does, it’s just fiction.

The media portrays anxiety as shaking, panting, and chaos. It’s associated with violence; it’s an “anxiety attack” for a reason. People think it only manifests itself with that clear terror. For Phil, it’s not always so obvious.

He doesn’t always know when it will happen. Some days, he wakes up with an itch in the back of his mind that he has to do something and he has to do it now now now and it grows and builds into something worse, but it sneaks up on him more often than not. Sometimes, there’s such a subtle build-up that he doesn’t even realize it’s happening until Dan intervenes.

Today is one of those days. He’s been under stress lately, worrying about putting out content fast enough while still having time for himself and Dan. It’s not an uncommon place for him to be, so he thinks it’s fine. He’s handled it in the past when he’s been even more stressed with tours and travel, so why should now be any different?

He’s been working diligently on a video and he’s almost done editing, so he plans to post over the weekend. He even tells his audience to expect the video in the next two days because he’s that confident that everything will go well between now and then.

As per usual, Phil watches through his video when he thinks he’s done editing, just to be sure. Normally, there’s nothing more to be done and he’s ready to post, but there’s one part of this particular video that seems off. It’s stupid, really; no one will care if there’s one second too long before a jumpcut, but Phil goes back through and cuts off a bit more from the take. He watches it again and frowns because now it’s too short. With the push of a few buttons, it’s back to how it was, but it’s still too long. Phil sighs in annoyance, picking up one of the toggles on his sweatshirt and biting it, but tries to fix the video again. He adjusts the cut back and forth, shorter and longer, but his dissatisfaction grows with every attempt.

He finally decides to let it go for now and see if the rest of the video is fine. If there are other issues, he can fix those and then go back with fresh eyes. He starts from the beginning and works his way through. Phil’s frown turns into a glare and his leg begins to bounce under the desk as his annoyance turns to agitation. The rest of the video is okay. Only okay. Actually, the longer he watches, the less okay it seems. He picks out bits from the editing that he thinks are sloppy, but then he analyzes his delivery of the script he’d written and the way he’d filmed and he thinks the whole video is pretty bad. His voice is too chipper, the colors are too bright, his timing is all wrong. From there, he considers the script itself. For the life of him, he can’t imagine why he thought it was good when he went to film it. Why did this video even exist in the first place? Who did he think would want to watch it?

He takes off his headphones and tosses them on the desk in disgust, burying his face in his hands. His video is dull and boring; he is dull and boring. He’d just promised his audience a new video, but there’s no way he can post this mess! They’d hate it, and then everyone would unsubscribe, and then he and Dan would be homeless nobodies, especially if Dan continued his social media break.

Phil shakes his head. What is he thinking? His audience isn’t like that! They love anything he puts out, don’t they? He isn’t sure anymore.

“How’s the video going, love?” asks a quiet voice from the office door.

Phil jumps, removing his hands from his face; he hadn’t heard Dan approach. He shoots Dan a weak smile, spitting the sweatshirt toggle out from between his teeth.

“It’s fine,” he lies. It’s not fine at all. It’s probably the worst video he’s made in years, a disaster waiting to upload. He should take it as a sign that he’s burning out; he’s been doing this for over ten years, he’s run out of good ideas, and that’s not to mention the pace he’s set for himself after so long with no schedule. He can’t do it, and this video is the evidence. It’s just bad, and that’s completely unacceptable.

But Dan doesn’t need to hear any of that. He has enough on his mind without Phil pulling him down any further, and, besides, these complaints are meaningless, unimportant. He can handle them just fine on his own. No need to drag someone else into it.

He watches as Dan takes in the bouncing leg, the chewed toggle, the empty coffee mugs, the video still playing on the screen, and knows there’s no way Dan believes him.

But Dan doesn’t call him out on it. Instead, he tilts his head down to look at the floor, his lips stretch into a sad smile, and he steps closer to Phil. One hand reaches up to cup the side of Phil’s face and his thumb gently strokes the bone.

“You’ve been in here a while,” he comments. “Take a break with me?”

Phil bites his lip, glancing back at the editing software open on his computer. He really ought to fix that jumpcut. Even if the rest of the video is bad, at least he can say that one part is fine and then he can upload it and keep pretending his channel is surviving.

“I don’t know, there’s just a little more to do. I’m almost done. There’s one cut that’s weird and I want to fix it,” Phil says in a rush. “It’s not really cooperating right now, though. I make it shorter and it’s too short and then I try to make it longer and it’s back to being too long, and then I go back short and-”

“That’s okay,” Dan interrupts in a calm whisper. “Do you want me to help?”

Phil hesitates, biting his lip again. Bringing Dan into it is a good idea because Dan is always a good second opinion with editing, but he worries that Dan won’t see the problem. Or maybe Dan will see the larger problem that is the video as a whole and tell Phil it’s all terrible. He already knows it’s terrible, but hearing it from Dan would make it all worse. Then this problem would be real and he’d have to deal with it, and that would include Dan’s disappointment, and he hates to disappoint Dan, he really-

“Phil?”

Dan sounds more concerned this time, so Phil turns to look at him. His forehead is creased with worry. His thumb reaches down to Phil’s lip, gently pulling it out from between his teeth.

“Ouch,” Phil mumbles. He raises a hand to his lip and it comes away red. “Shit.”

Dan reaches over and saves the video file then closes out of the program.

“But-” Phil reaches out to stop Dan, but it’s too late.

“It’ll be there for you later. It’s okay,” Dan reassures. He catches Phil’s hand in his own. “Come on. Let’s take care of your lip.”

Phil lets out a resigned sigh and lets Dan pull him out of his chair.

“I’ll come right back and finish it after, then,” he decides.

Dan sends him a small smile. “Let’s start by getting your lip cleaned up, yeah?”

He leads Phil over to the bathroom so they can see it better, then tears off some of the toilet roll.

“This’ll be kind of gross, sorry,” Dan says, pressing the tissue to the inside of Phil’s lip. He carefully dabs at the blood, keeping as much of it from getting into Phil’s mouth as possible. A few minutes later, he’s done, throwing away the tissue and washing his hands. He turns back to Phil and cups his face with both hands. “Is that better?”

Phil shrugs. His mind is already back on the video, trying to figure out how he could possibly salvage the mess he’d filmed so he could still post tomorrow.

Dan leans forward and presses the softest of kisses to Phil’s lips. “It’s okay, love.” He pushes his hand farther to brush through the hair on the back of Phil’s neck, then kisses him again, a little firmer this time. He pulls away and kisses Phil’s cheek, pulling Phil’s head in to rest in the crook of his neck before kissing his temple. “It’s alright.”

The tension doesn’t immediately leave Phil’s body, but he lets himself be kissed and hugged, eventually wrapping his arms around Dan’s waist and burying his nose more fully in his neck. He inhales deeply, finding reassurance in the familiar scent of his boyfriend. His emotions are stuck in stress and worry too much for him to truly appreciate Dan’s care, but he knows he’ll be grateful later, once his mind stops holding him captive.

They stay in the hug for a while longer before Dan pulls back slightly.

“Cuddles in bed, under the nice warm duvet?” he suggests.

Phil nods, so Dan pulls back all the way. He catches Phil’s hand with his own and brings it to his lips.

“I love you,” he murmurs.

Phil doesn’t feel like speaking. He’s still too keyed up, too stressed, and it’s exhausting. Dan knows Phil loves him, anyway. Instead of using words, he settles for leaning in to kiss Dan’s cheek.

Together, they head over to their room. Once inside, Dan gently kisses Phil again, sending little tingles of warmth through his system. A little of the tension leaves his shoulders and he finds he can breathe easier. It’s not enough to fully relax him, but it’s a step in the right direction.

They pull apart briefly to strip down to their boxers and climb into bed, where they immediately wrap their arms around each other. Phil lies half on top of Dan, his head resting on his chest and their legs tangled together. Dan brings a hand up to pet through Phil’s hair, occasionally leaning forward to press a kiss to his temple.

Sleep, or maybe Dan, beckons Phil, convincing him that it’s alright, the audience will still be there tomorrow. Rest now. Now that he’s being held by a warm Dan in a soft bed, he finds himself finally relaxing. The stress and worry of before is melting away, leaving behind an exhaustion that can only come from anxiety.

He can name it now; earlier, he hadn’t even noticed what was happening. But now he sees the signs that led to the worst of it, he sees how it switched from a general form of stress into the anxiety that fixated tight on one problem and tried to expand it to more problems that weren’t really there. Now, he can recognize and appreciate Dan’s care and fall in love with Dan just a little bit more.

Tomorrow, Phil will look at the video again, this time with Dan. Dan will maybe offer a few tips here or there, but overall tell him it’s wonderful, as always. He won’t tell Phil he was ridiculous for being so anxious about it, because he knows Phil can’t help it; instead, he’ll offer quiet encouragements as Phil puts on the finishing touches and uploads it and reward him with more cuddles and kisses.

Editing Workshop

Research and Planning - Post 20

Before beginning on working on our project, we took part in the Editing Workshop at our school, where we learnt about how editing happens, the software we were going to use for editing, etc.

We began with discussing what a pixel is. It is the tiniest square in an image holding a particular shade of colour. Multiple pixels of various shades (or even of the same shade) come together to form an image.

There are 2 types of software, ones that use pixels and ones that use vectors. A vector software enables the user to design and manipulate computer images using geometric and mathematical commands.

There are 2 other types of software, layer based and node based. Layer based software uses multiple layers of certain text, photos, videos or audio which are 'layered' one on top of the other to produce the final output, in video the topmost layer showing the most amount of significance, however in audio layers the significance is equal. A node based software links images, texts, audio and video to produce the final output, appearing to be like a tree diagram, or a flowchart.

An example of a layer based software is Final Cut Pro X, which layers different forms of media to create a product, whereas an example of a node based software is Nuke, a great software used for VFX.

Moving on, we began with learning about the Final Cut Pro X video editing software's user interface, analyzing what each panel, tool, function and button is used for whilst editing. We explored different interfaces as well, for editing, adding any VFX or SFX from their respective libraries, titling libraries, transitions and colour grading.

At first looking at the software without having an understanding, I was a little bit overwhelmed by the appearance, looking at all the tasks it could carry out. After seeing it in action with some footage our sir edited to show how it performs, I had a clearer idea of how to edit. These skills immensely get enhanced and polished during the post-production phase of the project.

I have never used MacOS or Final Cut Pro X in my life, so getting used to their interfaces and keyboard functions was a task at first, but eventually I got used to it, and its safe to say that Windows is far superior. Before learning to use Final Cut Pro X, I learned using the MacOS and getting used to it, eventually learning Final Cut Pro X.

Our sir explained to us how the keyboard is more reliable than using a mouse while editing, since you can use all 10 fingers on the keyboard, rather than 2 on the mouse. It is not just easier to master or faster to use, but most importantly the most accurate way of editing. Zooming in on the timeline to see if audio and video have synced all the way to inputting decibel values for each audio clip, even cutting or copy-pasting, I agreed with him on that, as during the workshop I may have found it hard to believe, however after actually using the editing software I was able to make a judgement, that keyboard is better.

Good Days and Bad Days

The last few days have taught me a lot in terms of writing a day off as a “bad day” due to something negative that happened during it.

It’s been a busy and strange few days, all of them early starts with a full schedule. And each day I’ve been tempted to write it off as “bad days” before taking a step back and getting a little perspective.

Monday was the first day at college for the week, which is always a struggle. A 9am class with a lecturer who isn’t exactly my favourite person in the world, and a solid hour and a half of travelling before all that. When i got to class, our usual teams had been split up and all of a sudden everything had to be done by that day, stressful. I was already tempted to give in to the “bad day” when I found myself with a headache and dizziness. But then things got better. I went to my journalism class and wrote a short news article (which my lecturer really liked) and I read some of a book on the way home which was lovely.

Tuesday started off pretty well - I had great motivation and was on a roll while writing a plan (which is very rare for me) for a video project on a subject I love (Doctor Who Cosplay). I felt like I could tackle anything, which was refreshing considering the previous day. My second class of the day also brought more positivity when I realised I passed a law assessment which I was sure I wasn’t going to pass first time! My final class of the day was an extra voluntary hour-long class in which I got more confident in using my college’s editing software. This is where the day took a turn. It was 5 o’clock. I was tired. I missed my favourable bus home, and the next one wasn’t for another half hour (during rush hour wtf). As if that wasn’t bad enough, I then missed my second bus by literally 10 seconds, leaving me stood in the cold for nearly 40mins. It eventually took me just over two and a half hours to get home compared to the usual hour and a half. I was not in a good mood. Again I was ready to write this off as a “bad day”. But looking back at what I’d achieved that day, it wasn’t such a “bad day” after all.

And finally for today. Today was an odd one. I slept through my alarm by an hour and a half, missing my morning bus. My 9am class (my only class for today) which I always enjoy, was then cancelled due to strike action. Naturally I was a tad annoyed as I was half way there by now. However, I was determined to make use of the day. I spent today sitting in the library in a little bubble of my own making a poster on Photoshop for an event, which turned out really well. I went for lunch with friends who I don’t see as much as I’d like. I listened to some good soundtracks while working. I got a Starbucks. I finished my book on the way home. Another arrived in the post today. Today was fairly peaceful all things considering.

In just a few short days I have learned to stop writing days off before they have barely begun, and to take into account my achievements before doing so. I just need to take a step back and get a little perspective because there are no “good days” or “bad days”, just days.

Moving Image Evaluation

The theme of this project was to create a short video using new video skills that we had learned.  This brief definitely wasn’t one of my favourites for many reasons however I still learned a lot of new skills in video and in planning.

I found the planning the most interesting part of the project as I got to really consider what would be an interesting story or object to show in a short video.  Being able to sit and draw out every shot and write about it in detail helped a lot with this brief and it’s something that I started doing outside of this (such as for my graded unit).  I had never worked with making videos properly before so I did learn a lot of new skills from video techniques, to planning and editing skills and these are all things I would like to work on and improve in the future.

When researching for this brief, I looked at many different adverts, short films and even some feature length films and series.  Even though my final submission for this brief was a quite light-hearted advert style video of making tea, one of my main points of inspiration was The Godfather films.  That’s because I had studied that film in school and knew from before that there is a vast amount of camera techniques used in that film so this helped me to see and understand what particular shots or techniques look like and what effect they can create.  Another point of reference I relied on throughout this brief was one of my friends who is currently studying film and TV production.  I got her expert opinion on a lot of things and even had her explain a few moving image concepts to me in simple terms.

A lot of problems occurred throughout this project however the main one was time.  This brief was launched after the graded unit and got left to the side to focus on our main personal projects that required most work.  This meant that time ended up quite tight and I had to reshoot certain shots the day before the submission.  Another problem I had was finding someone to voluntarily star in my moving image.  Most people I asked said no because they weren’t comfortable with acting in front of a camera. However, by cutting out all dialogue and offering a paid for lunch, I eventually found someone.  The last main problem encountered was staff striking which meant we missed a few classes.  This set us behind a good bit with this brief and most of it was completed on our own.

If I could do this project again, I would like to take more time with all of the different stages and also try a more complicated editing software that can allow more fancy editing to my video.

Planning-Improved

After last week's test, I have spent two days reflecting my performance plan and improving it.

First, the name of the project has changed. It was ‘A Screen in a screen’, and now it is called ‘From a screen to a screen’. It sounds more like a motion. To coincide with the new name, the content and shooting way of the performance are also changed.

In addition, now my performance has a clearer content. In previous plans, inspired by some online performances, I decided to just present the changes of the videos that caused by multiple cameras. In the performance, the specific content of the performance is not the most important. As for the performance content, I once wanted to introduce my project to the audience during the performance, which enabled the audience to understand the focus of my work. But the performance like this may be too boring, and the audience may not want to watch the whole introduction. After critical thinking, I think I should add some plots to make the whole performance process more interesting, while telling the audience what my performance was doing.

After the modification, my performance content is like this: I will set up a huge mobile phone frame model on the ground. During the performance, I will cross the phone frame model again and again, and then go back. My behavior is a metaphor for myself moving from one screen to another new screen, which viewers can easily see. Every time I enter the phone frame model, it means that I arrive at a new screen.

Finally, the shooting way has also changed. Because of the light and the space, I decided not to shoot with multiple devices simultaneously. Instead, I will use only one mobile phone to shoot my performance process. After shooting, I will re-shoot the video using other equipments in a soft light room. Eventually I will get multiple videos which were distorted by the screen to varying degrees. This can avoid the problem of the dim videos when I shoot outside, while retaining the distortion effect of the screen on the videos. For these videos, I will use the editing software to process them. I will combine the pieces from different videos based on my action in the performance: First, I will appear in the first video. Then, I will try to cross the phone frame model. After I cross it, at the same time, the video played will be replaced with the piece from the second video, which represents that I have come to the second screen. And so on, whenever I cross the phone frame model, the source of the video will be replaced with a new piece of the next video. All in all, the change of the source of the video is synchronized with my action in the performance. This makes the audience directly see the video’s change as I keep crossing the phone frame model. This will strengthen the expressive force, for my action become the sign of the change. A gradually changing videos can make the audience pay more attention to the impacts caused by the re-shooting than multiple different videos.

Of course, new plan will need more editing works, and I must make some props. But I think it is worth.

Radical Workshop Week 2

Working Title: “Mental Channel Surfing”

Software, Material, and Technical Needs:

I’ve been doing a lot of research over the past week into digital to VHS conversion and I found a lot of really helpful video tutorials on how to accomplish this. I’ll link them below:

Some of the items that I would need in order to create my film and possible installation are several CRT monitors or TVs, a VCR, some blank VHS tapes, RCA cables, an HDMI cable, and an HDMI2AV adapter. If I decide against my idea of making this film entirely analog, I probably would only really need the CRT TV’s and I could edit all the VHS-like effects into Premiere Pro during the editing process. 

Medium(s):

The medium I plan to use is digital film converted to analog via VHS tapes. If I decide to not convert to analog as I am planning to do, I probably will edit the digital footage to appear to have the intended ‘vintage’ look. Outside of screenings I want to show my film on several CRT monitors arranged together, possibly stacked on top of one another.

Installation: 

The final film can either be viewed at the end of semester SOFA screenings or via an installation I plan to create. The installation will include several CRT monitors playing out of sync random segments of my final edited film to create the sort of ‘chaos’ feeling I want to achieve with my film. I have included some sketches of what I think this could possibly look like in my thumbnails.

Aesthetic: 

I really want this film to have a VHS horror/vaporwave aesthetic. I also want each scene to change very abruptly, as if they are channels being flipped through on a TV. Finally, I want to add some glitches and artifacting through slightly crinkling the VHS tapes I want to record on (I actually looked up a tutorial on how to do this, not too scary or difficult!). 

Theme(s): 

Since my film is going to be revolving around the idea of what it feels like to have ADHD, that definitely is going to be an ongoing theme in my project. Some other themes I think I want to convey that I feel relate to my interpretation of having this disorder is chaos, anxiety, nervousness, and the feeling of being overwhelmed. 

Proposal:

The film I want to make for this workshop revolves around how I personally feel when I experience symptoms of ADHD. While this disorder is typically associated with losing focus and hyperactivity, most of the time it can be a lot more than that. ADHD symptoms can include periods of ‘zoning out,’ executive dysfunction (the feeling of ‘I WANT to do the thing but I can’t physically get up and do the thing. I don’t know why.’), as well as hyperfixations on specific subjects or concepts such as favorite TV shows or favorite animals. At times it can feel like your brain is racing at a million miles an hour and there’s no way to control or stop it. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear, and disorientation. I want to convey these feelings through the visuals and the sound design in my film. The two ideas I have right now for the content of my film itself are I either want to have different actors read out random articles from Wikipedia, or I want to ask real people who have ADHD to talk for several minutes about a subject that interests them and let them continue to talk even if they stray off topic. I then want to convert this footage to VHS and purposefully add in my own artifacting and glitches to the footage itself. For a screenings environment, I would edit the footage in a way that allows each little ‘interview’s’ audio to slowly layer over one another, eventually to create a sort of chorus of sound. I want to then edit the sound in a way that allows certain parts of stories or topics being talked about to peek through, but they are quickly covered by another thought from another speaker so you never hear the end of what someone is speaking about. Visually these clips would be played side by side, filling the screen in their own little condensed squares. In an installation setting, I want to set up several CRT monitors and play back each of these interviews out of sync and at random to create the sort of ‘chaos’ of sound that I feel represents the thought process of a lot of people who experience ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms. I also might add my own music to the film, as I am currently taking a composing for film class.

In order to accomplish the look I want to achieve with my film, obviously I would have to do some research on digital to VHS film conversion. I could just add the indented VHS effect with digital editing, however I am really interested in experimenting with this medium and I really want to try and do this authentically. I have already started doing some research on what items I would need to buy to accomplish this, and it does not seem like it would be too expensive as I already own a lot of the items needed (like HDMI cords and a VCR). I think in terms of shooting this film, I probably could accomplish it and get all the footage I need in one weekend and I probably could use Studio A to do so. Most of my time with this film will probably be spent editing it to fit the desired themes and aesthetic I want.

Daily Doodle 61 - June 16, 2018

Pixie heckin surprised me with a new phone out of nowhere!!

Guess he had been planning this all along but wow did he spook me with it!

 Today I woke up groggy and a few minutes later, Pixie called me to go down to his house. We both sounded very groggy but I was going to go to his place soon anyways. I got up and got ready, reading some stuff and then leaving. I also got some shorts under my pants as Pixie wanted to wash his Miata. Someone was cutting grass at the summer school and specifically got Pixie’s car dirty for some reason.. So we had to wash it

I got to Pixie’s house and that’s the first thing we did. I didn’t felt like taking my pants off to stay with the shorts, so I just helped like I was dressed already. It was a quick wash anyways and we were done fairly fast, then going inside to cool off with the A/C

An hour later, we left to the nearby Taco Bell to get breakfast. I just got a Naked Egg Taco, which is decently filling and nice.. But got it as a meal cuz I was thirsty. Lame though cuz the drink is a small orange juice box and the hashbrown was way too toasted. Pixie also got too much food and went over his budget, I blame drive thru stress

We parked at the parking lot and ate, Pixie sharing his food with me as he got full, I got full too though. We then left home once again for a bit, then left with the Miata. We had the top down which was cool and all, but not that cool in the city with the scorching sun.. So a lot of the time we were at traffic lights just getting heat and having people look at us funny

Pixie eventually made it to a gas station, fueled up while I sat under the sun, then left home. That was.. Too hot.. Anyways, we relaxed at home and got more A/C treatment..

Some hours later, we left in the Miata with the top down again, getting some food at a nearby McDonald’s as well as water as I was hot and dehydrated.. I didn’t really like going around the city with the top down like this. We even had a guy tell us the top’s purpose is to give us shade aaa

We got home and hung out for a while. Pixie was at the PC and we were watching videos together and having a good time. Sometime later, Pixie got called outside by the mailman and left. A while later he told me he wanted to go to the park. I didn’t think much of it but it was still a hot day. It was 94F/34C inside Pixie’s garage! These garages are open and air can flow through them just fine

Got inside my car instead of the Miata and headed out. Got there and Pixie brought his backpack as he wanted to.. “Draw” there.. Odd cuz it’s kinda windy and there’s no tables. I’m absent minded though, so at the time I didn’t really notice what was happening

Anyways, we got to the swings and fixed one of them up as they were stuck at the bars. Pixie then told me he forgot his phone in the car and told me to go get it for him. I left my phone with him and left to get Pixie’s phone. I then came back and Pixie asked me about my phone and showed me it.. AND THEN THREW MY PHONE AWAY AT THE GRASS!! He then surprised me by pulling out a box out of his backpack.. It was a brand new phone!! My old phone didn’t break or anything, Pixie just wanted to scare me, I guess, and it worked! He also had taken the SIM card out just in case.. I’m surprised he did all this so quickly.. I also thanked him so much

He then told me he had been planning this all along and talking with the seller of the phone.. Just wow! It’s a shiny OnePlus 3, a considerable upgrade from my aging and troublesome OnePlus One. I was ready to move my SIM card and set it up but we realized the new phone only accepts smaller cards. Pixie hadn’t planned for this, but we went to the nearby mall to see if we could easily get a smaller SIM

We got there, I was charging both phones as they both had low battery but the new phone was charging WAY faster. Once at the booth, we asked and wondered if they charged a fee for this, and they did.. It was a lot and we didn’t have the money.. But the lady at the booth gave us the card for free! She was so nice and we were then on our way

We left home and once there, I put my SIM in, updated the phone, then reset it. It was now mine as I set it up with all my apps. I had to sign into so much stuff though.. So while this happened, I installed a video editing software Pixie wanted back on his laptop as well as streaming software. I also had some delicious schnitzel dinner during this time. Then while this all installed, we left in the Miata once again, with the top down again but the sun was luckily setting, so the ride was more enjoyable

Got to a supermarket where Pixie bought some groceries and left home again to keep installing and moving over to my new phone. It’s a lengthy process somewhat.. We then left one final time later that night to get an extra caramel sundae for Pixie which ended up being a mess of too much caramel as well as making a bit of a mess in my car

Either way, we made it home for the last time today and just hung out. We watched videos together until it was later and I said I should be heading home, we then left outside, kissed and hugged, I thanked him again and left home

I made it home safely but it was late and my eyes were burning a bit. Pixie went to bed and I showered, then sitting down to write the doodle while still admiring my new phone.. I’m so thankful aaa

I then realized I should put myself over the doodle and head to bed. I’ll hopefully wake up before 10am which is when I post the doodles.. We’ll see when you guys read this
