Tagged by @arendaes on this fairy doll maker. I've skipped the last few of these doll makers because I just do not tend to have the kind of really high femme character in play that works on them without feeling really uncanny to me, but I figured I'd give this one an attempt and see how well I could recreate my BG1/2 character's old 2018 design (doodled on scrap paper at work here with a sad attempt at shitty wizard dart).

One of the things that came up in my psych testing was not news to me, but interesting (and validating!) to see laid out in the paperwork. The psychologist who confirmed my clinical diagnosis remarked that, in her opinion, my verbal and (non-quantitative) reasoning skills had obscured the extent of my support needs and non-verbal symptoms.

Now, I am 100% aware that many people do not grasp that verbal autistic people can (and must) have substantial non-verbal symptoms of ASD and that autism extends beyond the things that make allistic people personally uncomfortable. But in my experience, people tend to correlate verbal skill and general functioning so much that they often miss some pretty obvious symptoms and needs, as happened in my case.

And I was thinking about how it's not just something that obscured how dependent I am on the support network I'm lucky enough to have. Even beyond autism, there's something sketchy about the ways in which verbal or rhetorical skill is linked to the validity of people's understandings and experiences.

Some people are, for various reasons, unskilled at forming arguments or lines of reasoning. This doesn't make their conclusions intrinsically wrong, just often poorly-reasoned and poorly expressed. Some people can't articulate their feelings well, and this doesn't mean their feelings are illegitimate. It doesn't mean anything except that they're inarticulate.

Reasoning and rhetoric are good skills to have, absolutely—both because, pragmatically, they can confer advantages, and because they can aid in furthering communication and knowledge. This isn't a defund the humanities post. But your authenticity and/or the correctness of your understanding are not contingent on how well you can express yourself or how persuasive you are in convincing others.

Obviously "rhetoric can be used to lead people away from truth as easily as towards it" is not a new concept (hi, Plato!). It's not news that people can be persuasive about mistaken ideas or just flat-out evil ones. Nor is it news that some people are not good at communication or persuasion. But we often don't follow that to the conclusion that "just because this person is struggling to articulate their position in a rhetorically effective way doesn't automatically mean they're wrong."

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.
