This is one hell of an issue going on at my job, more of a fuck one particular co-worker, this has been going on for a lil while so warning it might be long. TW for a few different things honestly.
So just over a year ago (roughly) we had this new co-worker join us. At first she seemed pretty ok, a bit ditzy but otherwise fine. As time went on though she never really improved (in fact got even worse) and because she is out and proud MtF, she constantly say to everyone that if the boss tries to discipline her for poor work ethic etc she’ll just sue for discrimination. Pisses everyone off that she would try and pull that card when its over legitimate issues with her work but oh well can’t do much. This is just issue 1.
Issue 2. I am friendly towards her, but do not consider her a friend, there’s only one person i work with that i’m actually friends with outside of work. But for some reason she thinks we’re best friends and she has been trauma dumping on me constantly. When i was talking to my friend about the medical shit i was going through she overheard and then proceeded to tell me about all the health issues she has due to her drug usage while i was on break. Saying she knew how i felt and then almost trying to ‘one up’ me by listing all of hers. She overheard me talking to my friend a separate time about how my depression had spiralled and i was ashamed cuz i had relapsed in my self harm (this was when me and my friend had come into the shop to buy stuff on our way to town and this co-worker was working.) Next time i worked with her she told me all about her depression and (without asking me if i was ok with it) showed me all her scarring on her torso etc. it was really uncomfortable for me and was when i started trying to distance myself.
Issue 3. She will go out of her way to annoy people by saying stupid shit and claims that she finds annoying people funny. She’ll start debates and say pretty extreme stuff and when people make it clear they aren’t comfortable with it she doubles down and just won’t shut up.
Issue 4 and this is honestly the worst one. She came in high off of illegal pain meds and was honestly in no state to work, but kept insisting she was fine. She couldn’t walk straight, was moody all night etc. She then missed the next shift, just didn’t show up, phone dead so no one could contact her. The day after that she turns up, again high as anything, only this time she was aggressive to everyone to the point that she apparently threatened to slit two of our co-workers throats for talking about her (out of concern as they are normally friends with her.) Got aggressive with one of them for laughing about something that had nothing to do with her. Just all round being awful to work with. And the worst thing is we’re all sure she’s gonna make up a bullshit story so that she doesn’t get sacked over it.
Im so glad I’m off for a week and wont have to deal with it, but I don’t know how im gonna put up with it if she continues. I don’t want to say anything to my boss in case she turns on me when she’s off her face, its honestly scary.

So yeah, haven’t had to write one of these in a while, but it’s been a rough week, and I need to vent.
So as most of you know, I’ve been having car problems since this spring, I won’t go over the laundry list of fixes and repairs that have had to be made, but I’ve basically gotten to the point where I’ve had to take my car into the shop once a month to fix or replace some part that’s not working properly.
Since October, I’ve been getting the feeling that my car’s Transmission has been starting to slip, every time I switch the car into drive, it always makes a dull thunk and clicking sound. I took it to my mechanic and asked him about it and he told me it was normal for this time of year. I’ve had the car for almost 3 years, and I’ve never heard it make that noise before. In December, it got worse, gears started getting jumpy, would shift hard, and I’d always lurch forward whenever I tried to come to a stop (watching the tachometer, I’d always see it jump to second gear before dropping back into first). Took it back to the garage again and once more asked them to check the transmission, I figured maybe I just needed to have the fluid changed. They didn’t check the transmission, but they did change the fluid, and for a while, it was fine. But now it’s starting to hard shift again, the lurching is getting harder, and it’s getting more difficult to get up to speed (pressing down on the gas has me shooting into 3rd gear and the engine makes an awful racket).
It’s pretty obvious at this point that the transmission is no good. But here’s the problem, transmission repairs are the second most expensive repair job on a car next to fixing the engine. Doing a search online, fixing a transmission can range from 800 to almost 2000 dollars. I’ve been mulling over getting a new car and getting rid of this one, I just don’t have the money for one right now, I was hoping I could get a couple more months out of this one before buying a new one, but if the transmission’s going, I might not have as much time as I thought.
It’s an 11 year old car, with 266,000 kilometers on it, at this point, if I’m going to spend 2 grand, I might as well put it towards a new car.
Shopping for one has also been a pain though, because almost none of the dealerships around here have certified used cars (usually so they can charge an extra 600 or so at signing), and I don’t exactly trust private deals, not since my brother has been screwed twice when he bought cars from private sellers. (First car had a bad engine, second car had $3000 worth of body damage on the bottom).
My Dad has been trying to help, but his advice is of course to try and find the cheapest options, or convince me to just get the transmission fixed and not buy a new car. To be fair, I understand where he is coming from, but as I’ve mentioned before, I’m taking this car to the garage once a month to get something else fixed, if I decide to fix the transmission, who’s to say something else won’t break a week later? The other problem is he wants me to only look at cars under 10 grand, the problem is that all cars for that price around here have over 250k mileage on them, or are even older than my car.
I understand being cheap and wanting to save money, but sometimes, cheaper doesn’t equal better.
I spoke to my mechanic back in December when I brought it in for the fluid change, and I mentioned I was probably going to be shopping around for a new ride soon, but given the current state of my car, I don’t see myself getting much trade value for it. The mechanic said that if the dealer won’t make a fair offer for it, that I could sell to the mechanic instead, apparently he buys junked cars off his customers so he can have his apprentices practice on them. I’m thinking, at this point, I might take him up on that offer, if anything it’ll help contribute to my new car fund.
If it means toughing it out on a bus for the month, so be it, least it saves me money on gas and insurance.
this is just really frustrating...

I Have Commitment Issues
(Nov, 28, 2022) Visual Journal
I don’t know where my commitment issues come from, but I have a hard time investing anything into myself. Whether that’s education, money, taking care of myself, etc;
My thought process:
- “I don’t even know if I would wear this a year from now”
- “I don’t buy anything as a need but as a want so it’s not worth to spend the money because you change your mind all the time”
- “I end up finding better stuff later”
- “It’ll be cheaper in the future”
- I don’t want to create deep relationships with people, I don’t know if it’s because I feel like my time isn’t going to last long or because I’m mentally tired of dealing with people
- I don’t want to go through the struggle of meeting friends because it hurts if they leave I guess? But I can’t tell tbh. Do I even care? If you do why do you care?
- I feel like everything in my life is very temporary and that I shouldn’t be attached too strongly to everything because for some reason I’ve noticed a pattern of things leaving or it’s me that leaves
- Money is very scarce
- It’s too much heart ache to get rejected
- I’m a good coworker because there’s specific work dialogue that I can pick and choose. It feels like NPC dialogue.
- “Someone will make a better model eventually”
- “You move all the time, you need to keep your things to a minimal”
- “I can’t make up my mind and give up easily so it would be a waste of money to go to college or invest in something I’ve always wanted to do.”
- I don’t like to talk about myself at all because I don’t want to have a close bond with people.
- “Since when did you need to consume so much food? You don’t have a lot of money why do you think you can afford to eat as you please?”
- “I don’t own a lot of things. If I needed to I could fit everything I own into my car and move around as I please.”
- It’s easier to spend money on other people in my life
I don’t want to hurt anyone too significantly if I were to leave
I don’t deserve to have good things
Even if I did have good things I’ve noticed I have a tendency to ruin it
When I have my emotional breakdowns I tend to throw everything or break everything I own and have regrets later but I can’t stop the pattern because in the moment I feel like ending it all
I don’t spend my money like crazy, I don’t treat myself, I work the majority of my life.
I work so much and I’m so used to it that I don’t know what to do in my free time.
I care but I don’t because I don’t even think I’m gonna be here for long.
How can I invest in anything when I can’t trust myself to keep those commitments in my life
I break good habits like it’s nothing
I’m not asking for advice either. I know the healing process of what I need to do to “fix” this but would that even do any good? I don’t care about my well-being and I don’t really care what happens to me tbh.
I get anxiety attacks trying to go grocery shopping. I don’t want people to pay for me because I don’t want to owe anybody anything.
Looking at my bank account makes me have a life crisis.
I don’t even care about money.
This isn’t about minimalist lifestyle or being non materialistic, I don’t need a lot to feel content or comfortable but I struggle to even get that in my life.
I feel like within a blink of an eye everything and everyone will be gone or I will abandon everything within a random single breakdown
The possibility of ruining all of my relationships becomes more realistic the older I get.
I don’t believe I will become anyone or be anyone for myself.
I won’t become the person I aspire to be in the future. Idk if I’m content with that or fucking scared.
I hate paying for rent. I hate paying for cars. I hate that I have to pay just for my basic human survival. It’s not even worth the bare minimal.
I haven’t had a place in my own for almost a year. Next week I’m moving in to a $1,500 rental with a roommate…
Can you believe? $1,500 just for a room in a house that I’m sharing with?
Since when did shelter become so expensive? When was rental units and real estate a financial power move.
You have people making money off of lower class people without being bothered by it?
I don’t want to be alive in this world. I can’t afford it. I can’t be my authentic version of myself. I have so much trauma I didn’t even ask for. I didn’t ask for anything. I didn’t want to have to deal with this. It’s too much for one person to bear
If I can’t even afford the basic minimal survival check list how can I bother thinking about dreams?
I was not properly equipped to live in this world. To say I’m a hopeful person is very far off.
I’m not smart, nor am I good at anything, I’m not rich or incredibly good looking.
I’m average all around.
How does an average person get by in a world that doesn’t care about average people.
I’m so incredibly tired and done with it all. I feel like I could survive a zombie apocalypse better than whatever this shit is.
I want the world to burn in fire

Anyways I hope anyone out there is having a better time than I am

Spencer Reid x (gender neutral) Reader
Word Count: ~4170
Warnings: I don’t think there are any? Some language. Egregious amounts of fluff. A blanket fort and a Star Trek onesie. Gratuitous descriptions of Spencer Reid’s bone structure, because apparently I can’t help myself.
A/N: For the “treat yo’ self” square on my @cmbingo card, and also for @railmereid‘s 2k challenge! Prompt for the latter is bolded.
Tumblr media
It’s been a godawful case, and in the BAU, that’s saying something. At least nobody ended up in the hospital this time? But as you all troop onto the jet in a straggly line of wrinkled clothes and puffy eyes, that’s about the brightest spot you can find in this whole fucking week.
As you get settled, though, Hotch clears his throat. “Your attention, please. We’re taking a long weekend, Strauss’s orders.”
“Oh thank god,” you mutter under your breath.
“Once we get back and grab our things, you are not to return to the office for a full seventy-two hours.” Hotch looks sternly (well, even more sternly) at Spencer, who’s on the couch next to you, curling up for a nap. “Understood? And you are not allowed to take case files home, Reid. I mean it this time.”
“Understood,” he says grouchily. You can’t help but laugh at the pout on his face.
“Seriously?” you ask.
He shrugs, lips quirking up like he does actually realize what a ridiculous human being he is. “I have many talents, but ‘taking it easy’ is not one of them.” He does the air quotes, even.
“All those PhDs and you never got a degree in relaxation?”
“That’s not—” He realizes you’re teasing and grins. “No. No I did not. I just… never really know what to do with myself, I guess?”
“Shocking.”
“What are you going to do, then?”
“I am going to have a treat yo’ self day,” you declare proudly.
“A what?”
“You know, like in Parks and Rec?” He gives you a blank look. “No, you totally don’t know. Of course you don’t. But there’s this one episode where two of the characters have a ‘treat yo’ self’ day, and they go shopping and get, like, really self-indulgent things that they wouldn’t ordinarily buy themselves.”
He frowns. “You’re going shopping all weekend? You’ve never struck me as a particularly materialistic person.”
“Fuck, no. It’s more about indulging in experiences. Self-care. Things that make me feel relaxed. Just… whatever makes me happy.”
“Like what?” He still has this totally puzzled look on his face, with his nose wrinkled up. It’s so much more endearing than it has any right to be.
“I like painting. I’m not good at it, but I like it, so I’m gonna get some new paints and a big canvas and make a mess, because it makes me happy.”
“Huh.”
“What about you, then? What do you do to relax?”
“That’s… a good question, honestly.”
“Well, what’s your idea of a perfect day?”
Maybe it shouldn’t surprise you that self-care is a foreign concept to him. You wait patiently as he overthinks it.
“Perfect seems unrealistic,” he concludes wryly.
“So, like, remember when you were a kid and you walked into a really awesome toy store?” you prompt. “Just feeling that sort of carefree, giddy kind of happy?”
“Not really.” He shrugs.
“What did make you feel like that, though?” you ask. “When you were younger? There had to be something.”
“I think I just — I didn’t do much normal kid stuff.” He lets out a huff of a laugh and runs his hands through his messy curls, suddenly self-conscious. “Didn’t get to play pretend, or… I don’t know. Didn’t have time.”
“Right,” you say softly. “Sorry.”
“Nothing to be sorry about.”
You nod, throat suddenly tight. “Yeah. Get some sleep, Spencer. Sweet dreams.”
He gives you a tired half-smile and tugs his blanket up to his chin, tucking his hands under his cheek, and the dark hollows under his eyes are hidden by his long lashes as he falls asleep almost immediately. You need to rest too, but it takes you a while; you sneak a glance at him every so often, feeling that twist under your breastbone that happens all too often when you’re around Spencer.
By the time the jet lands, though, you have a plan.
* * * * *
You second-guess your plan approximately a thousand times on your way over to Spencer’s the next morning. When you get to his door, you almost convince yourself to walk away before you manage to knock; is this totally presumptuous? Is Spencer going to think you’re ridiculous? Is the whole thing just plain stupid?
Then again, you were stupid enough to fall for Spencer in the first place, so. What’s another stupid decision on top of that whole mess?
When he opens the door, he’s wearing pajama pants, a t-shirt, and a phenomenally hideous bathrobe, and he’s all messy-haired and sleepy-eyed, and for a moment you’re panicking because oh shit I woke him up. It’s almost noon, to be fair, but he did have some serious sleep to catch up on. Then you notice the coffee mug in his hand, and after a moment of relief, that morphs into more of a oh shit he’s so fucking beautiful type of panic.
You’re used to that, though.
Then you realize he’s staring at you, smiling but puzzled, and you haven’t explained yourself. Oops.
“Um. Trick or treat yourself day?” you blurt out, hoisting your shopping bags and giggling at your own lame joke. “I… brought you something. Sorry, I didn’t mean to surprise you — I should’ve texted, I just—”
“You’re always a good surprise,” Spencer says shyly, and then seems to shake himself. “Come in. Sorry. Coffee?”
“Please.”
You set down your shopping bags and follow him to the kitchen, where he fixes you a mug of your own — exactly how you like it, because of course he remembers. Then he takes a couple deep gulps of his own sugar-sludge and tops it up, and by the time you go back out to the living room, he’s starting to look vaguely awake.
“What’s all this about?” he finally asks, head cocked to look curiously at the bags.
“Well,” you start slowly. Now that you have to say it out loud, it sounds even more stupid. “I was thinking a treat yourself day would be a lot more fun with company, and it seems like… maybe you’re overdue for some of that? For… self-indulgence, and just, like, enjoying yourself without worrying. And you deserve it. So. You wanna?”
His eyes are soft and bright, oddly vulnerable, and a smile spreads slowly across his face, twitchy at the edges like he’s not sure he’s allowed to smile yet.
“Really? I don’t know what to do, though.”
“Well, I have some ideas about that. But first, you gotta make a deal with me.” The way he’s beaming makes you feel a whole lot more confident as you tell him, very seriously, “This is the sacred covenant of treat yourself day. You have to solemnly swear to do whatever you want. Anything you can dream up. Indulge every whim. Take an oath to give in to every one of your silly, random, frivolous desires, without any form of self-denial or doubt. Can you do that, Spencer?”
“I can try,” he says, and his voice cracks. It’s like he can’t shape the words, with the way his smile has taken over his entire face.
“Okay, good enough. And… I have a few ideas.”
“Like what?”
You shrug. “Like… some things I thought maybe you didn’t get to do as a kid? Here, let me—”
You rummage until you find what you were looking for, and then you turn around, holding it out like an offering. Spencer’s mouth drops open.
“Is that a Captain Kirk costume?” he asks squeakily.
“It’s a Captain Kirk onesie,” you correct. “And it’s for you.”
“Holy—”
He shucks the bathrobe and sets down his coffee hastily, and he’s zipping the onesie up before you can say “Beam me up,” looking down at himself with this joy on his face, totally giddy in a way you’ve never seen him before, and holy hell, even if he hates the rest of your ideas, this will be one hundred fifty percent worth it for the memory of that smile on Spencer’s face.
“I have one too,” you admit, and pull your Chewbacca onesie out of your backpack. Once you’re both appropriately attired, you tell him, “Next order of business is cartoons.”
“I don’t actually have TV?” he says apologetically. “I mean, I have a TV, but it’s only for —”
You grin. “I came prepared, though!”
Spencer’s the only person you know who still has a VHS player, but you’ve been holding onto some things you rescued from your parents’ attic a while back; you find your VHS of Tom & Jerry cartoons and wave it at him triumphantly.
“I’ve never watched that before.” He examines the cover, bemused.
“It’s essential viewing.”
“Okay,” he says slowly.
While he performs whatever arcane ritual makes his ancient TV work (there’s like a rain dance and an animal sacrifice involved, you’re pretty sure) you settle on the couch, nesting in all the blankets and sipping your coffee contentedly. Spencer presses play and sits down next to you, but you can feel his uncertainty; he’s holding himself stiffly, and he keeps sneaking glances at you.
“Spit it out,” you tell him, a few minutes in. “If you hate it, you can just say so, Spence. I won’t take it personally.”
He shakes his head. “It’s not that! I just — is this really how you want to spend your Saturday?”
“What do you mean?” You have a Chewbacca onesie, a perfect cup of coffee, and great company; you’re not entirely sure how this could get any better.
“Doing nothing,” he mumbles. “This is… there are so many things you could be doing. Don’t you have a whole list of things you wanted to do? But instead… I don’t know. You’re here. With me.”
Sometimes you want to scream until he realizes how awesome he is, but the screaming is probably not the best way to convey that particular message.
Instead, you keep your voice very quiet as you tell him, “There is absolutely nowhere else I’d rather be right now.”
It’s a little too true. Your cheeks burn as you turn back to the TV, trying not to dwell on the way you can see him watching you in your peripheral vision.
“Okay,” he says hoarsely. He settles himself more comfortably into the blanket nest, and before long, he’s giggling along with you.
You watch in peaceful silence for a little while, but at some point, Spencer’s stomach growls, and you pause the tape to make food — chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream, as per his verdict on “ultimate treat food.” As it turns out, he knows a lot about the science of cooking, but not a whole lot about the actual practice, so he sits cross-legged in a chair and directs you to various cabinets as you measure and mix and whisk. When you get the batter poured out on the griddle, he’s pattering on about the chemical differences between baking soda and baking powder.
He looks utterly dismayed when the first chocolate chip hits his forehead. Turns out his lack of hand-eye coordination applies to mouth-eye coordination too, and the floor is littered with semi-sweet projectiles before he actually catches one, but he’s laughing, so you really can’t bring yourself to care.
The pancakes are a total success. When you’re both stuffed and sugar-high, you grab the syrupy plates and bring them to the sink for a quick rinse.
“You don’t have to,” Spencer protests. You ignore him. His next words are much softer, scratchy and hoarse: “Thank you. I don’t — just — thank you.”
“Nothing to thank me for,” you say briskly. Then you turn around, and you freeze, because he’s a whole lot closer than you thought he was; he’s right there, close enough that you could reach out and run your fingers through his hair, or trace the sharp line of his jaw.
He has a tiny streak of whipped cream at the corner of his mouth, right where his lips curl up as he smiles, and for a second you can barely breathe with how much you want to stand up on your tiptoes and see if he tastes as sweet as he looks.
For a second he looks like he wants you to. He’s frozen too, for a moment, and you can hear his breath catch, but then he scoops you up in a hug, squeezing tight. And yeah, it’s just friendly, but it’s a hug from Spencer, and that happens rarely enough that it feels like a treat of its own, so you go with it, forehead pressed to his shoulder, heart racing.
When he releases you, you tell yourself you’re not disappointed.
“Right,” you say, bossy to cover how flustered you feel. “Back to business.”
“I think I need more practice sitting still,” Spencer confesses, following you back out to the couch. “It feels weird just… not doing anything.”
You pause, deliberating. “Well, we could keep our hands busy?”
With a quick rummage, you produce paint and an extra large pad of paper, holding them up for Spencer’s inspection. He frowns.
“I don’t have any paintbrushes.”
“They’re finger paints,” you say, grinning, and he laughs.
“Of course they are.”
You set everything up on the coffee table while Spencer presses play, and the two of you sit down on the floor, side by side. Spencer looks down at his onesie, then at the paint, frowning.
“It’s all washable, Spencer.”
“Still,” he mumbles. “I don’t want to take it off, but —”
He unzips the onesie halfway, peeling the arms off and letting the fabric bunch up around his waist.
“There we go, putting that genius brain to work,” you tease, but you’re touched that he cares enough about your present to worry about stains.
It’s hard to ignore how close you’re sitting. You do your best, keeping your eyes on either the TV or your masterpiece of Abstract Expressionism, but Spencer’s knee is pressed to yours, a constant warm pressure, and your hands keep brushing as you both reach for containers of paint, and you can smell him, like vanilla and maybe old books. The whole thing has you feeling flushed.
Other than that, though, it’s comfortable. It’s always been easy to talk to Spencer, which makes sense considering how much he knows about every subject imaginable, but it surprises you sometimes how easy it is not to talk to him, too. Silence isn’t awkward, with him. Neither of you say anything for the next hour or so. You just giggle at the TV and paint, wordless and companionable, and it’s the happiest you’ve felt in… longer than you care to admit.
Life is rarely perfect, especially not in your line of work, but this? This is pretty close.
As the credits start to play, you stretch, and then you look at his paper. It takes you a second to recognize yourself, but the likeness is unmistakable. Spencer’s got the exact angle of your eyebrow when you’re looking at him skeptically — apparently you do that often enough that he’s memorized the expression. He somehow managed to capture your smile, the curve of your lips, all in tiny delicate pinky-strokes of purple and turquoise… trust Dr. Spencer Reid to bring that level of precision to finger-painting, and oh god you are not going to think about his fingers any more.
“Do you like it?”
“Yeah,” you manage. You clear your throat. “Yeah, I really do.”
Then he makes it worse by rubbing the side of his neck, bashful and self-conscious, smearing blue-green paint from his collarbone to the sharp line of his jaw, and he’s so busy smiling at you that he doesn’t seem to notice. He swallows, and his Adam’s apple dips, shifting a streak of color, making it flicker. It’s such a silly thing, but it draws your attention to his skin — makes you want to touch. Worst of all, it reminds you that he’s already art, that the shape of him, the delicate precise way he’s put together, is more beautiful than anything you’ve ever seen in a museum.
It reminds you that you want some things you can never, ever have.
“You’ve got — um,” you say, gesturing helplessly. He blinks at you, slow like he’s coming out of a trance, and tucks his hair behind his ear, smearing more paint there before he remembers. You giggle, sharp and nervous, and it breaks the tension all at once. Spencer laughs too, rolling his eyes at himself. You get up clumsily to go grab a wet paper towel from the kitchen.
The moment is gone, but your heart is still racing.
“What’s next?” Spencer asks softly, once you’re both cleaned up.
He missed a tiny spot; there’s a blue smudge right at the corner of his jaw, and you want to touch it, feel it under your fingertips, see if the skin is as soft as it looks, right there where the bone stretches it thin.
“Blanket fort,” you blurt out, before you can do anything embarrassing.
His eyes light up.
It really shouldn’t surprise you that Spencer and his engineering PhD make quick work of a pile of sheets and clothespins. You’re pretty sure that he could revolutionize the entire field of blanket fort construction, if left to his own devices, but you keep poking him when he gets lost in his head or starts muttering calculations to himself. The point is having fun.
The end result is a lot more Frank Lloyd Wright than any of your childhood creations, but Spencer looks absolutely gleeful, so. It’s the spirit of the thing.
“One more thing,” you say. “Do you have any Christmas lights?”
Spencer frowns. “I don’t — oh! Wait!”
He runs to the closet, and he ends up halfway inside the closet, digging around on his hands and knees. You’re about to make a crack about Narnia when he comes out, holding up a box with a triumphant smile.
You read the label: “Halloween decorations 3 of 4.”
Because of course Spencer Reid has Halloween lights. He pulls out several long ropes of them; a couple are shaped like tiny skulls, one is strung with Jack-o-Lanterns, and two could pass as Christmas lights if they weren’t orange and purple. You help him detangle the knot of them and drape them over and through your fort, and when you turn out the normal lights and draw his heavy curtains, the whole thing glows in patches of orange and purple and white.
“After you,” you tell Spencer, and he crawls in without any more prompting.
There’s more than enough room to sit up, but Spencer is lying down on his back in the nest of blankets and pillows that you’d relocated from the couch. He’s staring up at the “ceiling” in silence, eyes glittering with some unreadable expression where they catch the twinkling shards of light. You make yourself comfortable next to him, looking up and wondering what he’s seeing.
“I always wondered what the appeal was,” he whispers. “Of blanket forts. And… childhood in general, I guess.”
“You grew up pretty fast, huh?” you say quietly.
“Yeah. And I never — I feel like most of the team doesn’t take me seriously sometimes. Like I’m still a kid to them. I always feel like I have to prove myself.”
Your instinct is to deny it automatically, but you know what he means. They laugh him off for his quirks, for the way he gets excited about things and for the things he gets excited about. That’s what’s so incredible about him, though: that dichotomy of knowledge and curiosity, the breathless excitement when he makes a discovery.
“I liked pretending I had my own little world,” you tell him. “Blanket forts. Felt like I could actually shut all the bad things out.”
“Still feels like that,” he says, and you can hear the smile in his voice.
“Nothing wrong with acting like a child, sometimes. We need that. Even if it’s just pretend.”
“I think I get it now.”
“Hmm?”
He’s silent for a long moment before he says, “In here, everything’s perfect.”
“Or we can pretend it is.”
You turn your head to find Spencer looking at you, and he doesn’t look away when your eyes meet. You barely want to blink for fear of breaking whatever spell you’re under.
There’s something raw and earnest and almost scared shining all over his face, like you’re catching a glimpse of the child he used to be, before the world taught him to put on a brave face and keep his most intense feelings to himself. It makes you feel shaky in ways you were really not prepared for.
There’s a heavy moment of silence. You’re painfully aware of how loud your breathing sounds.
It’s a hell of a thing, to have his focus like this. You fell in love with him watching him work; you know how intensely he can devote himself to a task, to a puzzle, to a map… and every so often, when the two of you talk, he focuses all that brilliance on you, and he listens so completely that you feel his attention like a spotlight.
That’s when he usually looks away, dropping his gaze like it’s something to be embarrassed about, because too many people have told him to stop staring.
He’s not looking away now. He turns onto his side to completely face you, curling up in that sweetly childish way with his hands between his cheek and the pillow, and you mirror him.
“Feels like we’re alone.”
He’s right; there are no distractions, no excuses to be made, no interruptions. It’s just the two of you, and it’s terrifying.
“Feels safe,” you whisper, because that’s true too. Your heart is racing, and it’s like you can hear your pulse in your ears, but it’s the quietest sort of panic you’ve ever felt. “I think that was exactly what I wanted, after the last couple weeks. To get away. To feel safe.”
There’s an orange light throwing most of his face into shadow, but you can see the corner of his mouth a little too clearly. You’re maybe a foot apart. It would be so easy —
“We don’t get that often.” His voice is barely more than a breath.
“Safety?”
“That too, but —” His breath hitches, and he clears his throat. “What we want. I don’t usually get what I want, but this was — this was very close to perfect.”
“Yeah, well, when is life ever perfect?” You manage a smile. “What would make it perfect? If you could have anything.”
“It’s not something I can have, though.”
“So pretend. It’s just us, and there are no rules today. What would it be?”
He bites his lip. “I don’t think —”
“For once in your life, Spencer, stop overthinking it,” you half-laugh, and then he’s propping himself up on one elbow, shifting forward, leaning closer, close close close until he’s all you can see, and —
He kisses you.
It’s the most gentle, feather-light brush of a kiss you’ve ever felt, barely more than a graze of his parted lips over yours. It’s there, and then it’s gone again before you can even begin to process the sensation.
As your eyes flutter open you can already see the fear setting in, dark intense gaze fixed on you as he inhales sharply.
You’re still trying to remember how to breathe; you’re too stunned to react beyond blinking at him.
“I’m sorry. Can we just —” He shakes his head, hand over his mouth like he’s trying to hold onto the kiss. “Do you think we could pretend — can we pretend I didn’t do that? I’m so sorry.”
“I don’t want to pretend,” you say shakily.
He stares.
This doesn’t seem real. It’s such a strange moment that you might as well be trapped in a Dali canvas. There’s fingerpaint on his face, and he’s wearing a Captain Kirk command uniform onesie, and there’s a tiny Jack-o-Lantern glowing over his head. If you’d imagined the “perfect” moment, this would not be it.
But you reach out, running your fingertips over the dark smudge of paint on his jaw, and the skin is hot and smooth. He shivers at the touch. It’s real.
“Spencer?” Your throat is tight, but you manage a choked, “I want you to kiss me again.”
He does, with a careful hand cupped to your cheek and a smile curling his lips when they meet yours. You run your fingers through his hair, and you both laugh when they catch on dried paint.
“Perfect,” he whispers.
It really is.

-More Hearts Than Mine-
Tumblr media
Summary: Raising a child is hard. Raising a child with one of Hollywood’s biggest stars is even harder. And raising a child with one of Hollywood’s biggest stars who you’re not actually in a relationship with is even harder still.
Especially when a global pandemic is sweeping the world.
With lockdowns and stay at home orders looming on the horizon, the uncertainty of their situation becomes almost too much for Whitney Taylor to handle. Chris suggests that they quarantine together to avoid any potential separations but, given what happened the last time they spent more than a few brief moments in each other’s company, that could cause more problems than it solves…
Chris Evans x OFC
Sequel to: Once Bitten - Twice Shy
Note: I’ve decided to make this five parts instead of four. I was originally going to combine this part and the next one, but I feel like it flows better with a bit of separation between them!

Part Two
The rest of our first afternoon together was spent lazing around. Grayson was tired, but continued to refuse his nap so we kept things low key to avoid any exhausted toddler meltdowns. By the time the evening rolled around, I was tired from the stress of the day myself and since I still had to unpack, I went up to my bedroom shortly after we'd tucked Grayson into bed.
I slept a lot better than I thought I would given everything that was on my mind and when I woke up, I could already hear the sounds of breakfast echoing up from the kitchen. Taking a few minutes to let myself wake up properly, I checked my phone and scrolled through social media before getting up, stretching and heading downstairs.
"Good morning," I smiled, finding Chris and Grayson sitting at the island eating some scrambled eggs while Scott leaned against the counter with a cereal bowl in his hands.
"G'morning, Mama!"
Grayson's greeting was said through a mouthful of food and Chris reminded him that wasn't polite before greeting me himself.
"Help yourself to whatever you want," he insisted. "There's some eggs left in the pan or cereal, whatever you can find. Maybe Grayson will even share his apple slices with you if you ask nicely."
Grayson gasped at that suggestion and frantically shook his head.
"No, Daddy!" He protested. "I don't want to share!"
I laughed as he reached over his plate to move the little bowl of sliced fruit closer to his body where he could keep it guarded.
"Not even one slice?" I asked. "But I'm so hungry!"
"Over there!" Grayson giggled, pointing at the counter.
I turned around and saw a few more apples in a bowl, making me smile as I turned back to the boys.
"But they're not nicely sliced like yours," I pointed out. "How can I eat those?"
Grayson shrugged and plucked one of his apples out of his bowl. He looked smug, thinking he'd won, but he was so distracted while he took a bite that he didn't see Chris' hand sneak over until he'd snatched one of the slices and tossed it to me.
"Catch!"
I did as Chris instructed and Grayson's jaw dropped. An indignant huff fell from his lips as he looked between the two of us.
"That's not nice."
Chris laughed, but I bit back a smile and returned his apple.
"You're right, baby," I agreed, kissing the top of your head. "That was mean, but we were just tricking you. You don't have to share your apple."
"Thanks, Mama."
The frown on his face turned back into a grin and I scraped the rest of the eggs that were in the pan on the stove onto a plate before turning back to the boys once I’d pulled a fork from the drawer.
"So, how do you want to work it with things like groceries while I'm here?"
"Just tell me what you want and I'll order it," Chris told me. "They've started doing curbside pick up pretty much everywhere so I was thinking I'd just do that."
"Oh, that's handy, but I meant like money wise. Should I just transfer you my share or do you want to alternate who pays?"
Chris stared at me for a moment as if he was trying to figure out if I was joking before he chuckled.
"I'm not taking any money from you, Whitney."
His voice was firm, but I furrowed my brow in confusion.
"What? Why not? I can't let you pay for everything."
"You're not still working, are you?" Scott asked. "Or is it different since, as a photographer, you're so far away from whoever you're taking pictures of?"
"I'm not working," I admitted. "I think it would be doable if it was, like, family portraits or something like that, but the big photo shoots involve too many people. Everyone cancelled on me last week or delayed my contracts until at least the summer."
"So, don't worry about paying for anything then," Chris shrugged. "It's not like you're going to eat that much, I think I can handle the cost."
He was trying to do a nice thing. He was a very generous person with those that he cared about, but I wasn't going to take advantage of him.
"I have savings, Chris," I insisted. "I'm not completely helpless."
As if sensing a rising tension, Scott put his bowl in the sink and grabbed his coffee mug before turning to Grayson.
"Hey, Gray, let's go see what cartoons we can find."
Grayson nodded eagerly and Chris helped him down from the tall stool so he could follow Scott out of the room, taking his little bowl of apples with him.
"I wasn't trying to imply that you're helpless," Chris assured me once they were out of earshot. "But you're tiny, I don't think that buying you a few groceries for the next couple of months will financially cripple me."
I tried to temper my defensiveness before I answered him, reminding myself again that he was trying to be helpful.
"I know that, but I don't feel comfortable living here for that long without contributing," I told him. "You already give me more than you need to every month for Grayson."
It was true. Since our custody agreement was that Grayson spent fifty percent of his time with each of us, he wasn't required to pay me any child support. But he did anyway. It was something we’d argued about on and off over the years because the amount that he gave me was way over the top. I appreciated his generosity and I did use all the money to buy things for Gray, but most of it ended up in a bank account that I'd opened for him because there was no way to spend it all in one month without Grayson becoming the most spoiled child in all of Massachusetts.
"I like to make sure he's taken care of."
"Which I am capable of doing with my own money when he's in my care," I reminded him. "But I don't want to start that whole conversation again. I just want to feel like I'm doing my part while I stay with you."
"And I appreciate that gesture, but it won't be necessary," Chris insisted. "You can clean, you can cook, do anything like that to help out, but I won't accept any money, especially while you're not working."
I sighed as he stood up to put his plate in the dishwasher while I put mine on the counter, too distracted by our conversation to eat. I knew it would be a struggle to get him to agree to take money from me, but I wasn't ready to back down so I thought of a compromise and hoped he would accept.
"How about we drop it for now," I suggested. "But if this thing goes on for more than a couple of weeks, can we talk about it again?"
Chris paused and crossed his arms. I could tell that he wanted to argue, but I was relieved when he agreed.
"Alright," he nodded, hesitating for a moment before adding a stipulation to the deal. "But we're going to talk about your car too before you leave here."
"My car? What about my car?"
"Grayson told me that it's not working properly," Chris admitted. "He said it sounds angry sometimes and that you haven't gotten it checked out yet."
I rolled my eyes, guessing that was one of those 'secrets' that he mentioned.
"It's fine," I assured him. "It made a weird sound one time last week when I tried to start it, but it's still working. I was going to take it in, but then all this virus stuff happened and I didn't have chance."
"You need a new one," Chris informed me. "That one is getting old anyway. I'll take you car shopping when things reopen."
I laughed at the absurdity of that statement, but I could see the annoyance on his face at my reaction.
"You're not buying me a car, Chris. The one I have is perfectly fine and if it's not then I will take myself car shopping, thank you very much."
"Why do you get so defensive when I try to help you?" He asked, his eyes shifting into a glare. "I'm not going to accidentally think that you're in love with me just because you accept a nice gesture from me. I can take a hint, Whitney, I get it."
My jaw dropped and I couldn't hold back a disgruntled scoff at his insane change of topic.
"What are you even talking about? This has nothing to do with that," I argued. "I wouldn’t have accepted your invitation if I knew you were going to hold that over me and throw it in my face all the time."
“All the time? This is the first time I’ve mentioned it!”
“Yes, but I’ve not even been here for twenty-fours hours and you’ve already brought it up!”
Perhaps it was my harsh, snappy tone that did it or my very valid criticism of his low blow, but Chris' body language softened.
"I just don't get why you get so worked up when I'm trying to help you..."
"Because I don't need help, Chris," I explained. "I might not be Captain America rich, but I do just fine and I can take care of myself. I can buy my own groceries and if I really needed to, I could buy myself a new car. You throwing money at me for things like that makes me feel like you don't value the success I've had in my career or my ability to manage my finances which is, quite frankly, offensive."
Chris dropped his arms so they were no longer crossed and his shoulders relaxed. Clearly, he'd been getting quite defensive as well and had realized it, whether he would admit it or not. I held my head high, proud of myself for explaining my feelings so well and taking him down a notch, but that feeling disappeared as soon as Chris spoke.
"If you were the richest woman in the world, I would still want to buy you a car," Chris started, looking more nervous than the dismissive, self-assured attitude I was getting moments ago. "I'd still want to buy you anything you could ever need because making you happy makes me happy."
My face fell at his confession and my heart clenched again, knowing what the underlying sentiment behind his statement was. It stung more than any hurtful words could have as the sincerity, the genuine care and appreciation, in his voice was heartbreaking. I regretted not adding a condition to our cohabitation that specified he wasn't allowed to say such nice, guilt inducing things as I stared at him for a moment, trying to think of a way to get out of this conversation that was more polite than just bolting out the door.
Too much time was passing as his words hung between us so, short of any good comeback to his words, I shrugged.
"If you want to make me happy, let me contribute for the groceries."
It was Chris' turn to look shocked now, as he was obviously expecting a more thoughtful response to his rather vulnerable admission, but he pulled himself together quickly and a dry laugh fell from his lips.
"Nice try, Whitney," he smiled, shaking his head. "But that's not going to happen."
Without giving me any more time to argue, he turned on his heels and walked out the door leaving me alone to wallow in my guilt and wonder how much longer I'd be able to keep up my act of nonchalance.
-
There was a weird sense of restlessness in the house that day. Usually, killing a few days at home would be no big deal but, as soon as the stay at home orders came into place that morning, the knowledge that we were now unable to do anything else made it feel slightly more suffocating.
Chris wasn't lying though when he said that he planned to make this lockdown as enjoyable as possible so we managed to keep ourselves entertained as we planned out some of the things we could do. Chris and Scott were compiling a list of old movies they wanted to watch again, I ordered a bunch of puzzles and books (some more child appropriate and some for the adults), Chris dug out an old wiffle ball set he had from when they were kids and Scott organized Chris' video game collection, pulling out all the good ones like their favourite: Mario Kart.
By the end of the day, we were all feeling much more optimistic about how our time at home would go. Especially Grayson. It was finally starting to sink in for him that he got to spend the foreseeable future surrounded by all his favourite people - something that was unfortunately a rarity for him given our situation. He was bouncing off the walls as he threw his ideas into the mix and couldn't wait to get started on all the fun.
The excitement of the day led to another early night for him and I excused myself shortly after, declining the invitation to start practicing my Mario Kart skills.
After our conversation that morning, I was trying to keep a bit of distance from Chris. I wasn't mad and it didn't seem like he had any lasting feelings of annoyance either, but our earlier discussion proved to me that there was still tension and resentment between us. I wanted to let it settle and give him some space so our small disagreement didn't turn into a full-blown argument. Living together after everything we'd been through would be an adjustment period and easing into it would probably be the safest route.
So, I took myself off to my bedroom and lounged in bed watching some new mystery show on Netflix. I started it thinking it would just be a good way to pass a few hours until a reasonable time to go to bed but as usual with Netflix, I got sucked in and before I knew it, it was almost midnight.
I closed my laptop, knowing I needed to get some sleep as Grayson was an early riser, but I noticed the glass of water I'd taken upstairs with me hours ago was empty and my mouth was dry. With a sigh, I dragged myself out of bed, taking the glass to the kitchen to fill it up.
I crept down the stairs, assuming everyone would be in bed already, but I was surprised when I got to the kitchen to see the light on. I poked my head into the room and saw Scott sitting at the little island in the middle of the room, a drink in his hand and a melancholy look on his face.
"Hey," I greeted him, alerting him to my presence. "You're up late..."
"I was just FaceTiming with my boyfriend. He's in LA so it worked with the time difference."
"Boyfriend?" I questioned as I headed over to the sink to fill up my glass. "I didn't know you had a boyfriend."
"It's pretty new," he sighed. "We've only been together about a month now."
"That's so exciting! You didn't want to stay in LA and quarantine with him?"
"No, we thought it was too fresh for us to, like, fully move in together and if I was in LA and not living with him then we wouldn't see each other anyway, so I decided I may as well come here."
"That's really hard," I frowned as I pulled out the chair next to him and sat down. "I'm sorry that you had to make a decision like that."
"It's alright," he shrugged despite the sad look on his face. "A lot of people have had to make much tougher decisions than that lately."
"That doesn't mean you can't be upset anyway."
"I know, but I'll be alright. I'm just glad we've got so many ways to stay in touch." He flashed me a smile and I was glad to see it. Scott was a good guy and one of those people who was usually so positive and upbeat that it was hard to see him feeling down. "What about you? How are you doing with everything?"
"Oh, I don't know," I sighed. "Do you mean the deadly virus plaguing the world? Or the fact that I'm in lockdown with the father of my child who I have a fairly complicated history with?"
"Both," Scott chuckled as he sipped his drink of what looked to be whiskey. "But I was more referring to being here in lockdown with Chris."
"It's hard, but I'm doing okay. It's just a weird situation."
"It'll definitely take some time to get used to for both of you," he nodded. "He felt really bad this morning. He told me what you said about how offensive it is when he throws money at you all the time and I totally agree, but I hope you know his heart was in the right place. He tells everyone how talented you are, he would never want to belittle your career."
"I know," I winced. "I overreacted a little bit."
"No, not at all!" Scott assured me. "He needed to hear it. I've been on the receiving end of it too so I know how you felt, but he doesn't realize how it comes off some times. He's just trying to be generous and help the people he loves."
I nodded and I knew that I should just end the conversation there. Tell him that I understood what Chris' intent was and leave it at that. But my heart overpowered my brain and I found myself opening up before I could stop myself.
"I just don't exactly deserve to be on that list," I reminded him. "And I shouldn't take advantage of any feelings he might have for me after the decision that I made."
"You really do deserve to be on that list," he told me with a smile. "He's really in love with you."
"Love might be a bit extreme," I scoffed. "He's made his feelings clear, I know he cares about me, but it's not love."
"He's not made his feelings clear enough then," Scott countered. "Because he's been head over heels in love with you since pretty much the moment he met you."
My mouth went dry as my brain fought to comprehend that claim while all my instincts were telling me that it wasn't true. Scott wouldn't lie to me, he wasn't that kind of person, but he could be exaggerating especially since he had been drinking. There was an honesty in his eyes though, a look that told me he was telling the truth, but I couldn't accept it, it just didn't make sense.
"That's not true," I argued. "He only ever saw me as a friend until that one night and that night was a mistake."
But Scott was confident in what he'd shared and he shook his head.
"He never saw you as just a friend. You were his endgame from day one."
Perhaps it was a delaying tactic, perhaps it was a nervous response or I was subconsciously trying to buy myself some time to make sense of what he was trying to tell me, but a giggle slipped out at Scott's choice of words.
"Endgame? Is that an Avengers joke?"
"It wasn't intentional," he assured me with a laugh, but he was quick to get us back on topic. "But I mean it. We had a conversation just a few weeks after you met and he was talking about you like you hung the moon. He's been enamoured from the start."
I couldn't wrap my head around it. He was speaking with such confidence, but the words he was saying might as well have been another language. Knowing what I knew about our situation, how things had unfolded between us, how that first night together went down and the aftermath of it, there was no sign that Chris had been in love with me. He cared about me, that much I knew, but to be in love? That didn't add up.
Especially when I'd had those feelings all along as well. Surely, I would have noticed had they been reciprocated.
I'd fallen silent as my brain buzzed, scrambling for any gesture or obvious evidence that I'd missed that might prove Scott's claim, but when he spoke again, I was pulled from my thoughts.
"Do you not feel the same way about him?" He asked. "And there's no judgment here, I can see both sides. I love Chris and I want him to be happy, but I respect what you're trying to do."
I felt my heart rate spike again as my palms grew sweaty in a way that was becoming annoyingly familiar.
I was aware of the importance of this conversation, but I was also aware that I wasn't having it with the right person. If Scott was being honest then Chris must have had his reasons for not sharing the depth of his feelings with me and it felt sneaky and deceitful that I was finding out from someone else. It also felt wrong that the answer to Scott's question was on the tip of my tongue. Chris deserved to know before his brother, but I was tired. Fighting through this mess all by myself was wearing me down and Scott had always been one of those people that compelled you to pour your heart out to him. He was a better listener than most and I needed someone, anyone, to give me some kind of guidance. So the words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
"I do feel the same," I admitted, my eyes firmly locked on the glass of water on the table in front of me as I worried I'd be too anxious to speak if I looked Scott in the eye. "I love him very much."
"Then why are you so scared to give him a chance?" He questioned. "Just because of Grayson?"
I nodded, but even I was starting to doubt my own motivations.
"We work together so well right now, but if we give it a shot and someone ends up getting hurt then we might not be able to put our feelings aside and keep things peaceful."
"But aren't you hurting each other every day that you spend in love with each other, but not together?" He pointed out. "Yet, you manage to put Grayson first through all that pain."
His words hit me like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head.
It was an excellent point.
We were both hurting from being apart, it was clear from how defensive we got over silly little things like we had that morning. I could only imagine how Chris felt, but it was hard for me to be around him all the time and just keep things friendly when in my heart I wanted more. I ached at the sight of him every time I dropped Grayson off or picked him up, but we still managed to be friendly and polite through that.
"How many of those drinks have you had?” I teased earning a laugh from Scott. “They’ve made you too wise.”
"Not enough," he joked. "But it's true, isn't it?"
"It is true, but it's different," I insisted. "If we were together and broke up, that kind of hurt can come with a lot of anger. Right now, we might be sad or disappointed about the situation, but there's no anger."
"Oh, there was anger," Scott informed me, grimacing slightly. "After Christmas, when he came back from dropping Grayson off at your house there was definitely anger. He slammed doors, stormed around the house, got drunk off his ass and ranted about it for hours. I've never seen him that upset over being turned down before."
My heart sank at that news. I knew that he'd been upset, but I didn't think he'd taken it that badly. I thought he was just a bit sulky, but now my guilt intensified.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked, my voice thick with emotion. "I feel bad enough as it is..."
"Oh, honey, I'm not trying to make you feel bad," Scott assured me, reaching over to rub my back as I forced back the tears that had sprung to my eyes. "But it proves that even if one of you ends up heartbroken, you can still put Grayson first because you just did it."
"I didn't, Chris did," I pointed out after clearing my throat. "If it wasn't up to me, if Chris came to his senses and ditched me for some beautiful actress, then I'm not sure that I could be so forgiving."
"Why would he ditch you?"
As promised, there was no judgment in Scott's voice, just genuine curiosity and I shrugged as I answered.
"Because he could have any woman in America."
"Maybe not any woman, let's not get carried away," Scott smirked, his teasing tone making me smile. "But for such a relationship loving guy, don't you think it's interesting that he hasn't been in a serious relationship in about five years?"
That wasn't something I'd put much thought into, but it wasn't the 'gotcha' moment that it seemed like Scott had hoped it was.
"Not really. He's been busy with work the last few years," I pointed out. "And having a baby with me must have complicated his personal life a bit."
"You complicated his personal life the moment he met you," Scott insisted. "That's my point."
He sounded so sure of himself, but the words he was saying were still hard for me to comprehend. I'd always been so confident in my understanding of our relationship and if I was to believe him, it would shatter everything I thought I knew.
"I just don't see why he wouldn't have mentioned this by now..."
"You know how he gets with his anxiety. He's not always the over confident hotshot that people assume he is," Scott reminded me. "But you'll have to talk to him if you want more information than that."
I let out a sigh as I knew he was right.
"There's a lot that we need to talk about," I admitted. "Thank you for this though, Scott, you've given me a lot to think about."
"Anytime," he smiled. "And I completely respect that you're willing to put Grayson first despite whatever feelings you have. You're a wonderful mom and I would be proud to call you my sister-in-law."
I laughed at his outrageous leap from even considering a relationship straight to marriage and shook my head.
"You need to go to bed, Scott," I instructed. "You've clearly had too much to drink tonight."
"I probably have," he agreed. "But I meant everything that I've said. Think about it, okay?"
I nodded as I slid off the stool I was sitting on, wrapping my arms around him in a quick hug.
"I'm here for you too, you know that right?" I asked as I stepped back. "If you ever want to talk about your situation or vent and complain about the distance, whatever you need, I'm here."
"Thanks, Whitney," he smiled before dragging himself off his stool as well. "Goodnight."
I returned his smile and mumbled a 'goodnight' of my own before heading back to bed with all the new information that Scott had provided echoing around in my head. While it had been a very informative conversation, I wasn't quite sure whether I came away from it with the clarity I was looking for or just more confusion.

- I mean, the implication of how you would find that out is just-
- “Yeah alright, our boss is a prude there’s no way” he says shaking Ainsley’s hand.
- So when George meant dinner- he meant dinner
- You’re at the tower restaurant in downtown London
- It’s on the fiftieth floor at a skyscraper at the heart of London.
- He reserved a table specifically next to a window with a view of the canal and the London eye
- It’s quite spectacular
- “Have you been here before?” He asks
- You’re glad you dressed a little nicer than you were originally thinking
- “A few times, once for a birthday and once-“
- You’re interrupted by your server bringing a bottle of champagne
- George gets a puzzled expression, he hasn’t even ordered yet
- “Compliments of the Owner, we’re still grateful you were able to fulfill that order last minute when our other florist backed out.”
- “Not a problem Charles, it was my pleasure”
- When he’s gone George flashes you a smile
- “I feel like everyone knows you” he says, lifting up a champagne flute as you toast.
- “That was just one person” you say with a smile and a giggle
- “You should have been at the store last week, my brother wouldn’t shut up about you” he says with a grin
- “Who’s your brother?”
- George describes Ron, but it doesn’t spark anything in you until he mentions the red hair
- “Oh yes, Ronnie! He comes by every month to get flowers for his girlfriend, I didn’t know he was your brother”
- What a small world
- You should have seen the similarity from the start, the hair was a dead give away really
- How come no one else at the shop had noticed either?
- “Well one of them” George shrugs
- “How many brothers do you have”
- George grins
- “That’s enough for a volleyball team!”
- “We have a sister too, the running joke is our parents wanted a girl, just one”
- By the time the appetizers are being brought out George has got the family picture from when they visited Bill in Egypt out (charmed so it doesn’t move of course)
- “You have a twin?”
- You know the second you’ve asked it that you said something wrong
- It’s not that George looks upset, or that his expression has darkened-
- He just looks so sad
- The kind of sadness that’s as deep as the Mariana Trench, hidden behind a kind smile and the gentle warmth of longing
- “I did have a twin-“ George knew this would come up sooner or later, he just didn’t want to ruin the nice mood you had going so soon
- “He passed away a few years ago”
- George is waiting for the look-
- The wide eyes, and the slight pout. That overly sympathetic look he’s gotten so often, it’s only natural. It happens to everyone, he won’t hold it against you.
- And it forms on your face a little, because you can’t imagine what it’s like to lose someone like that. But the next thing that comes out of your mouth is original
- “What was he like?”
- “What?” George is taken aback, he was expecting words of condolence, as is typical for this situation
- “You told me all about Bill, and Charlie, and Percy, and Ron, and Ginny-“
- Now he’s surprised that you’ve remembered all of his siblings names, and correctly at that
- “Now tell me about your twin”
- Your eyes are twinkling when they look to him. All of London stretches out behind you, like something from a painting. Your face is illuminated by the small candle in the middle of your table.
- It feels like something out of a movie, and George is afraid he might cry from the sheer beauty of it
- He never thought he would feel this way again
- “His name was Fred, and he was my best friend”
- He’s talked about Fred before, to his family, to his therapist and old classmates
- But he’s never had an experience quite like this
- “Umbridge? Oh she was the worst, like the bitter old nun who slaps your wrists with a ruler”
- Only worse
- “Anyway Fred and I- we planned this entire thing when we decided to leave school-“
- He tells you about the fireworks in the main hall of their boarding school, and the way they raced through the door and never came back
- “I think I would have liked Fred” you say, a warm look in your eyes
- He would have liked you too, George wants to say
- But that’s a little forward for the first date, he feels like he’s already unloaded enough with his broken family and their loss
- Lucky for him, dessert has just arrived
- “Compliments of the owner, we hope to see you both here again” Charles tells you, setting down two impressive plates of Tiramisu
- “Why do I get the feeling that whatever you did was more than just a last minute order fulfillment?”
- You shrug
- “Well after the whole thing- they started contracting me to do their regular day to day flowers” you shrug, it’s not that big of a deal, fancy places like this use a few different vendors, they probably have a different one for each day
- Which is for the best since your shop can only handle a few days at most.
- It’s not that you can’t produce enough flowers or anything, it’s just you wouldn’t be able to give Ainsley and Henry the leisurely work hours you do now, not while maintaining quality for your existing customers
- And that’s a big no for you
- “I take it business was always this good?”
- With how successful you seem, he honestly can’t imagine you struggling
- You scoff
- “It was tough at first, when I was by myself.” You still remember your family telling you that it wasn’t to late to declare bankruptcy and get a real job. “Things got better when Ainsley showed up- holidays are still tough though.”
- “Ron’s told me all about the hour long line at Valentine’s Day” George says with a grin and you bury your face in your hands with a muffled groan
- “Oh it’s going to be terrible this year.” Valentine’s Day is still a few months away, but you can already feel the dread
- “We started doing appointments only last year- because the amount of people that just show up and ransack the place is just-“
- “Oh I know,” George says. “My store doesn’t even sell anything all that romantic, but the amount of people who show up last minute to buy anything- one time a bloke even bought the decorations I had up.”
- “Have you noticed-“ you voice lowers as you lean forward. “That’s it’s never people looking for things for their significant other, it’s always-“
- “For the mistresses?”
- You nod enthusiastically
- “I thought maybe it was just my store-“ George leans forward as well now, talking very quickly
- “No the same person who ordered flowers two months in advance for their husband, will spend thirty minutes begging for me to put a bouquet together for their special friend”
- George leans back and shakes his head
- “It’s crazy isn’t it? How many people cheat?”
- You sigh, leaning back into your chair shrugging
- “It’s not our place to judge.”
- Especially not when the person in question is shoving fifty quid in your face for a god d*mn cactus and a card
- George knows that, and he knows there have been times that the only reason he was able to keep his shop afloat after Fred left is because of Valentine’s Day
- But still- cheating just irks him
- It’s the most unforgivable thing a person can do, to betray the person they love the most like that
- George knows every relationship is different- and that things aren’t clear cut-
- But he can’t ever imagine doing that to someone
- “I don’t get it though, I can’t even get one lover, let alone two or more” you laugh, and George swears it looks like you’re glowing
- He feels a smile twitch at the corner of his lips, the mischievous streak in him rolling awake after what feels like years of slumber
- “What if I told you I was trying to change that?”
- His arm is on the table, the tips of his fingers brushing against yours slightly
- You feel your face grow hot as his words sink in one by one
- A smile spreading across you face
- “I would say, I’m looking forward to it.”
BONUS:
- “So did you find out if Hottie’s color is natural?” Ainsley asks, a mischievous smile curled onto their lips.
- “Ainsley, his name is George, he owns a hobby store a few lanes over.” You say as you finish tying the bow on an arrangement.
- There’s a second of silence in which Henry and Ainsley exchange a look. Henry’s feeling pretty confident right now, Ainsley might have worked here longer than him, but he feels like he knows you pretty well, and he-
- “And yes it is, so you should both stop calling him Dye Job.” You say with a smile twitching on your lips.
- Henry.exe is broken.
- Ainsley has to hide their joy, internally cheering and wondering how to spend the money.
- “H-how do you know that?” Henry asks, maybe you’re just saying it so he and Ainsley will stop teasing your new love interest.
- You stop, looking up from your arrangement in slight wonder.
- Ah, he was right! It looks like you’re trying to come up with an excuse.
- “Well his brothers all seem to have that hair color, I think they get it from their Dad.”
- Ainsley and Henry.exe have stopped working.
- “YoU mEt HiS fAmIlY??” Ainsley shrieks.

Eric x Reader
Tumblr media
October 24, 1977
Point Place, Wisconsin
Eric Forman’s Basement
“What’s everybody doing for Halloween?” Donna asked as she sat down next to Eric and Kelso.
“Oh, probably going to eat a lot of candy and cry myself to sleep,” Eric commented. “Being alone on this holiday isn’t fun.”
Y/n was sitting in the lawn chair adjacent from him and set down the magazine she was reading on her lap. “What do you mean? It’s not like it’s Christmas,” she laughed.
“Yeah, but with Halloween, girls can dress up as slu-aaaa--” Eric stammered while staring at an amused y/n.
“Like what, Eric?” Y/n asked, a smile playing on her lips.
“Uh,” Eric stuttered once more and cleared his throat. “Like, uh, slugs. Girls can dress up like slugs.”
“Nice save,” Hyde chuckled.
“Yeah, but Halloween is better,” Fez piped up. “You get all kinds of free candy.”
“Well, Fez, people get candy on Christmas too,” Jackie mentioned and sat on Kelso’s lap.
“Yeah, but my host parents don’t allow me to eat as much candy on Christmas and since they don’t celebrate Halloween, I have to hide it from them,” Fez replied sourly.
“Well, that’s sad,” Y/n said.
“You know what’s sad?” Hyde asked, sitting from his usual spot with his feet up on the table and arms crossed. “Halloween is on a Monday this year, so we can’t do anything.”
“Well, we can still have it the weekend of,” Donna suggested. “Like, this weekend?”
Everyone looked at each other,
“Yeah, that sounds good,” they all agreed.
“Saturday night, here in the basement?” Eric asked, looking at everyone for approval.
“Yeah, yeah that sounds good,” everyone agreed, except for y/n.
“Y/n?” Eric asked, causing y/n’s heart to jump in her chest. “You coming?”
Y/n’s brain jumbled for a minute with Eric’s doe eyes staring at her. “Y-yeah,” she stuttered. “I’ll be there.”
“Great!” he exclaimed. “Saturday night it is!”
“Yayyyy,” Y/n mumbled under her breath as she turned her attention back to the magazine.
                                              --Time Skip--
Later that week at the Halloween store, y/n, Jackie, and Donna were shopping around for their costumes.
“What are you guys wanting to go as?” Jackie asked as she picked up a French maid costume. “I think I’m going to go as this and Michael will be my lord.”
Y/n and Donna snickered.
“What?” Jackie asked innocently.
“I think Kelso might expecting a little bit more than a house cleaning,” Y/n giggled and laughed when she saw Jackie’s face blush a deep crimson.
“What are you going as, Donna?” Jackie asked, quickly changing the subject.
“I don’t know,” she answered absent-mindedly. “Casey is going to be there, so I have to look foxy.”
“You’re still going out with him?” Y/n asked, not hiding her judgment. “I thought you wanted nothing to do with him.”
“I know, but he’s so dreamy,” Donna responded with a smile and pulled a sexy devil costume out.
“That would look good on you,” Y/n commented.
“Thanks, I might go as this,” she said off handedly and looked at y/n. “What about you? What’re you going as?”
“I don’t know,” she responded and pulled out a sexy nurse costume. “I don’t see anything that sticks out to me.”
“Maybe you should get that one costume we talked about,” Jackie said with a suggestive smile.
“No,” Y/n said quickly with wide eyes and shook her head. “That’s not gonna happen.”
“What? What isn’t going to happen?” Donna asked excitedly.
“Nothing,” Y/n said and walked away.
“Oh, c’mon, y/n. We’re best friends. You can tell me anything,” Donna badgered.
“No, really, it’s nothing.”
“I think we should tell her,” Jackie agreed. “She was bound to find out sooner or later.”
“No, I’d rather not do this right now,” Y/n begged. “Please, please drop it.”
“Okay, now I need to know!” Donna said with a wide smile.
“C’mon, y/n, just tell her. It’s not like it’s a big deal anymore,” Jackie said.
“It kind of is,” Y/n said quietly.
“What is?!” Donna almost shouted, causing some people to turn to look at them.
Y/n looked around her for a minute, contemplating saying anything before finally throwing in the towel. “Okay, fine. But, before I do, please promise me you won’t get mad at me.”
Donna knitted her eyebrows together. “Why would I be mad at you?”
A nervous noise came out of y/n as she wrung her hands together before nervously looking at Jackie who signaled for her to continue. “Well, um...okay, it’s uh--” she looked over to Donna who was staring at her with wide and curious eyes, “Okay, here’s the thing--”
“Oh, for the love of God just spit it out!” Donna said impatiently.
“Okay,” Y/n said, starting to sway a little. “It’s, uh, Princess Leia.”
Donna giggled. “You were nervous about telling me you’re going to go as Princess Leia?”
“Well...yeah.”
This time Donna laughed. “That’s funny because Eric would really love--” she gasped. “Oh my God. You like Eric?!”
Y/n made a face as she just stepped on a bug and heard a nasty crunch. “Yeah.”
“For how long?” Donna asked, all humor gone.
Y/n sighed and rubbed her forehead. She wanted to run out as fast as the flash out the door. “Not very long,” she admitted.
“When you mean not long, do you mean after me and Eric broke up?” she asked, crossing her arms.
“Yeah, sort of.”
“What do you mean sort of?”
“Sort of as in yes,” Y/n answered quickly and nervously.
“What--? How--?”
“Well, after you two broke up, Eric really needed someone to talk to and I was the only one that would listen without getting annoyed,” Y/m defended. “And during that time, he was vulnerable and just really sweet and it made me look at him in a whole new light.”
Donna was quiet for a moment making both Jackie and y/n nervous.
“I’m really sorry, Donna,” Y/n said. “I didn’t mean it for it to happen. It’s just that--”
Donna giggled making y/n to stop talking and stare at her in confusion. “Y/n, it’s okay.”
“Wait, really?” Y/n and Jackie asked in unison.
“Yeah,” Donna answered. “We broke up months ago and I’m dating Casey now. And the fact that you hesitated to do anything really means a lot to me. You’re a great friend.”
“Oh, thank you,” Y/n said, sighing in relief.
“And if you want to pursue anything with him, you have my blessing,” Donna said.
“Wow, Donna. Thank you,” she replied and gave her a hug. “You’re the best.”
“It’s no problem. Besides, now you’re the one has to deal with all the Star Wars references,” Donna sang-song as she walked passed y/n to go buy her costume.
                                      --Time Skip--
The party’s music was blaring from the Forman’s basement that night. Kitty and Red had gone over to the Pinciotti’s house for their Halloween--much against Red’s will. A lot of people showed up, making the basement loud. Donna went as a sexy devil, Jackie went as a sexy French maid, Kelso was dressed up in robe playing lord of the manor, Fez as Frank N. Furter from Rocky Horror Picture Show...again, and Hyde didn’t dress up, because, well it’s Hyde. Casey surprised everyone by actually showing up and could barley keep his hands off of Donna. And Eric, of course, dressed up as Luke Skywalker.
Donna and Casey sat in the lawn chair, her in his lap while he whispered sweet nothings. Jackie and Kelso hung around the washer and dryer machine with Hyde, drinking beers and talking. Eric was hanging around with Fez, a Darth Vader, and a Tinker Bell. Eric was trying not to look at Fez’s pale legs while geeking out with Darth Vader and Tinker Bell. The only person missing was y/n.
“So, when Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star--” he continued his story, but stopped when Hyde clapped a hand on Eric’s shoulder.
“Hey, man, you’re girlfriend is here,” he joked.
“What? I don’t have a girlfriend,” Eric said confused.
Hyde pointed to the door. Eric’s gaze followed to where he was pointing and could feel his heart stop for a moment. Y/n was standing at the door dressed as Princess Leia. If he was being honest with himself, she looked stunning. He never knew someone could look more beautiful than she did right now. He had always thought she was attractive, but he was always in love with Donna, but ever since they broke up, he found himself liking her more than just a friend. Even though y/n wasn’t as big of a fan of Star Wars herself, he still loved that he was able to be himself and geek out with her and not feel judged by it.
She made eye contact with him and made her way over to him.
“Hey!” she greeted cheerfully. “We match!”
“Uhhhh...y-yeah,” he stuttered. “You, uh, you-you look great.”
Y/n curtsied making Eric chuckle. “Thank you, Mr. Skywalker. You look great yourself.”
Tinker Bell had gotten bored and walked off while Fez and Darth Vader stayed to ogle at y/n.
“Hey, so what cha doing later?” Darth Vader asked.
Y/n looked around the party with a mild confused look. “Uh, this?”
Darth Vader chuckled. “I meant after the party.”
“Going home,” she stated.
Darth Vader nodded his head. “Got it.”
“Thanks,” she said, grateful that he wasn’t going to push her. He walked off, leaving the three of them.
“And I’m going to go find a drunk girl,” Fez said and sauntered off.
Eric and y/n stood alone; Y/n’s heart beating out of her chest. “So, nice party. A lot more people showed up than I thought.”
“Yeah, thanks,” Eric replied, a smile growing on his cute face. “Thanks for coming.”
“Oh, you know I wouldn’t miss it.”
Eric couldn’t stop himself for staring at y/n from head to toe. “You really do look great tonight though.”
She smiled shyly at him. “Thank you.”
“Hey, Forman!” Hyde called from nearby the washer and dryer. “Keg is here. Help me do a keg stand.”
Eric pointed his thumbs over his shoulder. “Duty calls.”
“Yeah,” Y/n replied nodding her head. “I’m going to get a drink.”
“Hey, I’ll catch you later?”
Y/n nodded. “Okay.”
She watched him walk off and hold Hyde by the ankles as he drank straight from the tap. Y/n chuckled to herself as she turned to the shower and grabbed a beer. She popped it open and went over to Donna and Jackie to talk to them.
“Wow, look at you,” Jackie gushed. “Looking sexy.”
“Awe, thanks Jackie,” she said, blushing.
“I saw that you caught the attention of someone,” Donna said seductively and subtly glanced over at Eric who was too into making sure Hyde didn’t fall on his face to notice y/n sitting on the couch. She had purposely had her dress hiked up to expose her right thigh, but still covering to be decent.
Eric wanted to look but he couldn’t take the chance of being distracted.
“Okay, Forman, your turn,” Hyde slurred as he was lowered down.
“Wait! I have something better,” Kelso called out and brought out a funnel and a tube. “Gotta do this right.”
“Hell yeah!” Hyde whooped and connected the tube to the funnel.
Eric got down on one knee and put the tube to his mouth as Hyde started quickly filling up the funnel with cans of beer.
“Chug! Chug! Chug!” everyone at the party chanted as Eric successfully drained four cans of beer.
Eric stumbled back up and burped as he swayed a little. “I’m going to feel that buzz here in a minute.”
Y/n laughed as she watched the guy she liked come over and sit beside her. “What cha talkin’ about good lookin’?”
Y/n squinted her eyes at him while chuckling. “How drunk are you right now?”
“It’s more of a buzz going on,” he confessed. “But this confidence is real.” He clicked his tongue and pointed at himself.
“Hey, y/n, you wanna give this a go?” Hyde asked.
“Yes, do a keg stand!” Kelso shouted.
“No,” Y/n said quickly and firmly. “I’m not giving you another reason to look up my dress.”
“Kill joy!” Kelso shouted, now in a drunken stupor.
“I will drink from the tube though,” she said to Hyde who nodded in approval.
As she walked over to Hyde, grabbed the tube, and got on her knees, Hyde nodded approvingly. “Oh, yeah. Get on them knees.”
“Shut up, you idiot and just start,” Y/n said.
“That’s what she said too!” Hyde threw his head back laughing.
“Just give me the beer!” she shouted, laughing at her friend’s stupidity.
“Alright, alright, alright, calm down,” he responded and started pouring the beer down the funnel.
The fizz of the beer burned as it quickly went down her throat. The fizz was going into her nose causing her eyes to water, but she refused to stop. As everyone chanted around her to keep going, she forced herself to focus on ingesting the beer instead of Eric, who was watching her intently.
Hyde ended up pouring three beers in the funnel before she brought the tube up, careful not to spill. Everyone cheered and she got off the floor, her knees cracking from sitting on the concrete floor.
“Damn, color me impressed,” Hyde said. “I thought you’d only be able to do one.”
“Please, I’ve been drinking with you morons for the past year and a half. I have a higher tolerance now.”
Hyde grinned, “You’re welcome.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” y/n said and suddenly felt her skin heat up. “I’ll be right back.”
She walked out the basement and up the stairs, feeling that autumn breeze cool down her burning skin. She breathed in the cool evening air and sat on the porch. She leaned her head back and listened to the wind rattling the trees and crunchy leaves fly their way down the driveway.
She sat there like that for a minute or two before a voice caused her to snap her eyes open.
“Hey, you alright?”
Eric sat down next to her as she lazily turned her head to look at him. She could feel the alcohol starting to slush around her head, but it was a good buzz. “Yeah, ‘m fine,” she responded and looked back up at the night’s sky. “Just getting a breather. Started getting hot in there.”
“Yeah, when you’ve had a few beers and have a lot people around you, the air tends to heat up quick,” he commented.
Y/n hummed in response and looked back at him. “What’re you doing out here?”
“Oh, well, I saw you leave and wanted to make sure you were enjoying the party.”
“Oh, me? I’m having a marvelous time.”
“Why did that sound sarcastic?” he deadpanned.
Y/n giggled. “It’s not. I really am having a great time.”
Eric gave her a single nod. “Good.” His wrung his hands as he struggled to find the right words. Y/n had her eyes closed again, so she didn’t notice his nervousness. “You really do look good tonight.”
Y/n opened her eyes once more and looked at him. “Thank you, Eric. You look good too.”
“No, I mean, you look really beautiful.”
Y/n blushed at his words and stood up, pretending to stretch. In reality, it was a way to cover up her nerves. “Thank you, Eric. That’s really sweet.” She smiled at him as he stood up to stand in front of her. “Shall we go back in?”
“Uh, yeah, but before we do,” he began and grabbed her arm, stopping her from turning around. “Um, if you’d like to grab a burger with me--o-or, you know, catch a movie, that would be cool.”
“Oh,” Y/n asked in surprise. “Just you and me?”
“Yeah,” he sighed, his nerves shining through. “If you want to of course.”
“Yeah, that sounds like fun,” she smiled at him.
“Okay, good. I was afraid that you were going to say no. Because I really li--”
He was cut off by her lips quickly meeting his. She wasn’t sure if it was the newfound confidence or the alcohol, or maybe even both, but she felt like the time was right.
“And you kissed me?” Eric asked, confused.
“Oh my God,” Y/n said, embarrassed. “Did I read the signs wrong? I’m so sorry. I’m so dumb. I thought you were asking me out--”
Now she was interrupted by Eric’s hand wrapping around her neck and pulling her in for a passionate kiss. She didn’t need to wait for her to completely melt into the kiss and placed her hands on either side of his face. She felt the universe line up and butterflies erupt in her stomach.
As he pulled away, he looked into her eyes. “I was.”
“Okay, so I’m not dumb,” she said lowly and chuckled to herself.
“No, not at all,” he said and captured her lips once more. “Tomorrow night, I’ll pick you up at seven.”
She nodded and brought him in for another kiss, completely forgetting where she was for a moment until, “Alright! Get it, Eric!”
Eric and y/n broke their amorous kiss and looked to see Kelso, Hyde, Donna, Jackie, Fez, and Casey watching them.
“Hey, would you look at that. Foreplay has some moves,” Casey commented, making Donna lightly smack him in the chest.
“Bout damn time too,” Hyde said. “I was getting tired of hearing about his feelings towards y/n.”
Y/n flushed in embarrassment and hid her face in Eric’s chest.
“Uh, guys? Can we get a little privacy here?” Eric deadpanned.
“Sure, sure,” Fez said. “Hey, Eric. If you see her boobs, please describe them to me.”
Y/n and Eric looked at him with the most annoyed expression.
“Shut up, Fez!”

2018 ー Power To Smile [笑顔にする力]
Tumblr media
"Uhm, it’s really not a big deal, you know. The other day I happened to see a charity event where they raised money, but other than watching I couldn’t do anything.”
『Event: Heart Pounding! Happening VACATION (16th - 27th August 2018)』
Part 1
ーIn the waiting room.ー
Tsubasa: ‘Thank you for the recording. I will give you the materials for the next photoshoot.’
Kazuna: ‘Thanks. We’ll take a good look at them.’
Tsubasa: ‘Please do so.’
Mikado: ‘It is already next week, time sure flies fast. We need to think about what to do when we arrive.’
Momotaro: ‘Yeah, you’re right.’
Tsubasa: ‘Everyone somehow looks excited. What are you talking about?’
Kazuna: ‘It’s about the Hawaii trip this time.’
Momotaro: ‘Hikaru got the answers right in the quiz show last time, so everyone won a trip to Hawaii.’
Tsubasa: ‘That was amazing, wasn’t it. He won the first prize by solving the last question correctly.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Yeah. That kind of thing is a first, right?’
Kazuna: ‘Yes. Outside of work, we didn’t have the opportunity to go on vacation together privately. We need to thank Hikaru for it.’
Mikado: ‘Yes, I am looking forward to it. And I was talking about the trip while looking up the information on Hawaii that I gathered.’
Tsubasa: ‘I understand now.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Speaking of Hikaru, he said that he wants a new swimsuit to wear for Hawaii.’
Hikaru: ‘…..’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Hey, what’s wrong?’
Hikaru: ‘Eh? Aah, sorry! I was in a daze just now.’
Momotaro: ‘Did something happen?’
Hikaru: ‘No, it’s not that something happened…..’
Tsubasa: ‘If it is fine, would you want to speak about it?’
Hikaru: ‘Uhm, it’s really not a big deal, you know. The other day I happened to see a charity event where they raised money, but other than watching I couldn’t do anything.’
Hikaru: ‘Ever since then I’ve been thinking about what more I can do for people that has a lasting effect. It’s all I've done since that day, but nothing comes to mind.’
Kazuna: ‘I see. That’s why you’ve been absent-minded.’
Mikado: ‘Hikarun, that matter is a very important one I think, but if you think too much about it, then you become stubborn and good ideas can not enter.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘He’s right. Let your head rest a bit. The Hawaii trip is perfect for this.’
Hikaru: ‘Yep, you’re right! If I can refresh on this trip, then maybe some good thoughts pop up!’
Kazuna: ‘Speaking of which, I looked it up yesterday. It looks like there’s a big shopping mall near the beach we’ll be going to.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘If so, then you probably can buy a swimsuit there, too.’
Hikaru: ‘That sounds great! I’m so excited, there seem to be patterns that are unique to Hawaii~!’
Hikaru: ‘Alright, I’ll buy a swimsuit, swim a lot in the ocean and relax both my body and mind!’
(Something you can do yourself, huh….. I hope Hikaru-kun can get something out of this trip.)
Part 2
ーIn Hawaii.ー
Hikaru: ‘Hmm….. Which one should I take…..’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Hikaru, did you still not decide?’
Hikaru: ‘Yeah, I haven't yet! Peachan, which one is better, the blue or pink swimsuit?’
Momotaro: ‘….. The coloured one is the blue swimsuit, and the patterned one is the pink one.’
Hikaru: ‘Yeah, exactly! Both are hard to discard~. I beg you, everyone! Decide for me which to go with! Majority vote, please!’
Mikado: ‘When we exclude Hikarun and Tsubasa-san, four people are left, so there is no majority vote.’
Momotaro: ‘….. I abstain from voting. I also can’t decide which one is better.’
Mikado: ‘Good, then me, leader and Tatsu-dono will be the majority vote! I go with the pink swimsuit.’
Kazuna: ‘For me it’s the blue one, I guess.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘It’s the pink one for me.’
Momotaro: ‘Two against one for the pink swimsuit.’
Hikaru: ‘Okay! Then it’s the pink one! Thanks for deciding in my stead!’ _______
Hikaru: ‘I’m so happy that I could buy a swimsuit I like~! Ah, since we’re already here, why not take a look in the mall a bit? I spotted an unusual store earlier…..’
Hikaru: ‘Ngh,  wahwah!?’
Foreign Tourist: ‘Ouuh!?’
Tsubasa: ‘Hikaru-kun!?’
Hikaru: ‘Ah, I have chocolate ice cream all over my clothes….. ‘
(How terrible, it was the moment when he bumped into the tourist who had ice cream with him….. )
Tsubasa: ‘Please wait a moment! I will give you something to wipe, uhm, the handkerchief…..’
Hikaru: ‘Tsubasa-chan, it’s alright! I can wash this amount off, everything’s fine!’
Tsubasa: ‘Eh, but….. ‘
Hikaru: ‘Ah, the person I bumped into also has ice cream on his clothes!’
Hikaru: ‘Well, in such a case, you can say “sorry”….. With the translation app, but you can’t say anything more difficult.’
Momotaro: ‘What is Hikaru doing?’
Mikado: ‘He is trying to tell the person who he bumped into something. Let me see….. ‘
Mikado: ‘ “If you put the clothes into hot water, then the chocolate ice cream won’t stain too much.”, he says. I see.’
Foreign Tourist: ‘Ooh! Thank you!’
Hikaru: ‘Yes, yes! No problem!’*
Kazuna: ‘A-Amazing….. It looks like a friendship sprung from the passionate handshake between Hikaru and the tourist.’
Hikaru: ‘Fuu~, I’m glad I could tell him~.’
Tsubasa: ‘Even though it was an unexpected matter, your handling of it was wonderful. Hikaru-kun, how amazing!’
Hikaru: ‘That’s only natural, if you ask me! I’m joking though ♪. Since I have little brothers, it’s natural that I know about methods to remove stains and have mastered that skill.’
Tsubasa: ‘I understand now.’
Tatsuhiro: ‘It will be crowded inside the mall, too, so why not go to the beach? Let’s come back here when it has calmed down a bit.’
Hikaru: ‘True! Alright, let’s go swimming!’
Hikaru: ‘….. Hm? Eeeh!?’
Kazuna: ‘Hikaru, what’s wrong?’
Hikaru: ‘The Japanese tourists we just passed were talking about how they couldn’t go into the ocean….. ‘
Tsubasa: ‘Eh?’
Part 3
Hikaru: ‘Haa~, playing that was super fun!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Yeah, it wasn’t the beach, but the pool was fun as well in the end.’
Goshi: ‘Who would have thought that we’d be banned from swimming due to a mass outbreak of jellyfish.’
Hikaru: ‘So true! Well, it’s a bit of a pity, but the pool was fun, so the result is alright!’
Yuta: ‘The water slide was so cool! I wanted to slide more~!’
Kento (sighs): ‘Because my hair won’t be damaged by the salty sea breeze, I agreed to go to the pool, but to think that the water slide turned my bangs into a mess…..
Yuta: ‘Kenken, it’s impossible to maintain the shape of your bangs in the water slide~.’
Goshi: ‘Geez, you really don't know when to stop even when at the pool.’
Kento: ‘Be quiet. I was thinking of simply idling at the poolside, but Yuta forced me to come to the water slide.’
Tsubasa: ‘I am glad, you all seemed to have enjoyed yourself, everyone.’
Hikaru: ‘Yep, it just happened without much thinking~!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Now that you mentioned it, Hikaru, weren’t you playing with a foreign child in the pool earlier?’
Yuta: ‘Ah, I also saw that! You both were super excited and hit it off well! That child isn’t perhaps Hikarun’s acquaintance, right?’
Hikaru: ‘Nope, not at all. We only came to know each other at that moment.’
Kento (surprised): ‘Even though you didn’t understand the language, you got along that well.’
Hikaru: ‘It’s all about the feelings here! If you can convey that it’s fun, then words aren’t needed, are they? The rest you do with body language!’
Yuta: ‘Nothing less expected of Hikarun!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Since Hikaru has a lot of younger siblings, he might just be used to it.’
Kento: ‘Even at the handshake event children often lined up for Hikaru, that’s probably because of that.’
Hikaru: ‘Hmm, I don’t really understand it myself, but that might be the reason?’
Yuta: ‘Ah, there’s a beach volleyball court over there! Let’s go check it out!’
Kento: ‘Definitely no. I’ll get sunburned.’
Goshi (sighs): ‘Not to mention, you’re still in the mood to play?’
Yuta: ‘We’re already here in Hawaii, so even if we can’t go into the ocean, it’s a waste to not fully enjoy the beach! Come on, Gochin, Kenken~!’
Goshi: ‘Uohh! Don’t push me, Ashu!’
Kenken: ‘Wait. You really want to go?’
Yuta: ‘Of course! Let’s go ♪.’
Yuta: ‘Tsubasa-chan, come with us!’
Tsubasa: ‘Ah, uhm, I…..’
(Since Hawaii's schedule was hard, I rather want to take a small break…..)
Hikaru: ‘…..’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Hikaru, what about you?’
Hikaru: ‘Maybe I should take a break~. I used up too much stamina in the pool. I’ll rest over there under the parasol. Tsubasa-chan, will you come with me?’
Tsubasa: ‘Ah, yes.’
Yuta: ‘Nomecchi!’
Tatsuhiro: ‘Alright. Then I’ll go with those three and tell them about it.’
Hikaru: ‘Thanks, Tatsu!’
Hikaru: ‘Okay, shall we go, Tsubasa-chan!’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes!’
(….. Huh? Hikaru-kun seems to look fine?)
Part 4
Hikaru: ‘Fuu~, I played a bit too much.’
Tsubasa: ‘Are you fine not going to play with everyone?’
Hikaru: ‘Yep! Tsubasa-chan, you’re tired, right? I’ll also take a short rest!’
(Was Hikaru-kun maybe worried about me…..?)
Tsubasa: ‘I am sorry. I made you accompany me.’
Hikaru: ‘Wrong, wrong! I really wanted to rest! Don’t worry about that.’
Tsubasa: ‘Hikaru-kun…..’
Hikaru: ‘And you know, I became used to resting under the parasol like this~! Doesn’t it feel like we’re celebrities?’
Tsubasa: ‘Fufu, you are right. In movies as well, you see scenes where celebrities sleep in a beach chair.’
Hikaru: ‘Yeah, that! My dream came true!’
Hikaru: ‘Say, are you enjoying Hawaii, Tsubasa-chan?’
Tsubasa: ‘Of course. It is thanks to Hikaru-kun that I am also able to enjoy Hawaii in this way. Thank you very much!’
Hikaru: ‘No way, I only won the quiz show by chance. I didn’t do anything.’
Tsubasa: ‘No, I did mean the quiz show, but it is also because of Hikaru-kun’s cheerfulness that I am enjoying this Hawaii trip.’
Hikaru: ‘Hehe, I see!’
Tsubasa: ‘Hawaii really is a wonderful place. Both the scenery and the food are superb.’
Hikaru: ‘Yep, Hawaii sure is great!’
Hikaru: ‘I was thinking that if I give my family an overseas trip someday, Hawaii might be a good choice. They’ll probably be impressed by the different scenery and food compared to Japan.’
Tsubasa: ‘That sounds lovely. You always think about your family and respect them a lot.’
Hikaru (blushes): ‘Hehe, thanks!’
Hikaru: ‘…..’
Hikaru: ‘This is about the charity event from the other day. Until now, the source of me being able to give my best as an idol was that I had to work hard as the backbone for my family. Seeing that event, I thought that I need to have a broader perspective and want to cheer up even more people.’
Hikaru: ‘Just as I thought, isn’t it delightful to see everyone smiling!’
Tsubasa: ‘Hikaru-kun…..’
Hikaru: ‘As an idol standing in front of people I have ways to communicate with everyone more than normal people, so it would be a waste to not use this asset! ….. That’s what I think, but how I should do it, I don’t know.’
(A method only Hikaru-kun can manage…..)
Tsubasa: ‘Uhm, how about thinking in a more simpler way?’
Hikaru: ‘A more simpler way?’
Part 5
Hikaru: ‘Think simpler….. Hmm?’
Tsubasa: ‘On this trip, you bumped into a foreign tourist and got ice cream on your clothes, but in the end you shaked hands together with a smile. It was clear that the child Hikaru-kun played with in the pool had a lot of fun.’
Tsubasa: ‘Hikaru-kun was worried about me being tired and even brought me to this parasol to sit under. That made me very happy. When being with Hikaru-kun everyone smiles. I think Hikaru-kun possesses the power to make people smile.’
Hikaru: ‘I make everyone smile….. I didn’t come to think about this at all.’
Tsubasa: ‘That is fine I think. You do not need to do something for someone’s sake, it is fine if you do what you want to do little by little.’
Hikaru: ‘Do what I want to do, huh…..’
Hikaru: I see, it looks like I was thinking too much about it. I will do my best as I always did! Thanks, Tsubasa-chan!’
Tsubasa: ‘No, I am happy I could help you.’
Hikaru: ‘Tsubasa-chan, too, if you are troubled, don’t hold back and say so!’
Hikaru: ‘If I possess the power to make people smile, then I want to make Tsubasa-chan smile the most!’
Tsubasa: ‘Hikaru-kun…..’
Hikaru: ‘Let’s do our best together from now on as well!’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes! I will work even harder as your A&R!’
Hikaru: ‘Yeah!’
Tsubasa: ‘When I was talking with Hikaru-kun like this, my tiredness disappeared completely.’
Hikaru: ‘Really? Then let’s join beach volleyball with the others!’
Tsubasa: ‘Sure!’
Hikaru: ‘Yay! First of all, let’s enjoy Hawaii and get in touch with the various people and things here! I want to absorb so many things on this trip and then go home!’
Hikaru: ‘Let’s go, Tsubasa-chan!’
Tsubasa: ‘Yes!’
(Hikaru-kun really is a caring and kind person…..)

If Only I Had Stayed In The Shadows - Chapter Two
James Potter x OC
Words: 2,6k
Prologue Chapter One
Tumblr media
"Get up, it's Hogsmeade time!" Marlene shouted and I felt something soft hit the back of my head.
"Nrnngh," I grumbled, snuggling my face further into my pillow. "Come on, we only have this day and we have to eat breakfast, too!"
"Fine," I sighed, rolling off the bed.
"So, what's the plan for today?" I asked as we trudged down the hill towards the village after we handed in our permission slips to Filch.
"I need to go to the Hairdressing Salon for a new haircut," Marlene announced, tightening the scarf around her neck as a rather cool breeze drifted around us.
Groaning, I held her back by the elbow, "Are we going to spend all day in a salon? That's a total waste!"
"Oi, taking care of my hair is not a waste. And maybe you two should get a haircut, too," Marlene pointed out, causing Lily and I to splutter in protest.
"Excuse me, why do I need a haircut?" Lily asked, reaching up to touch her hair.
"It's way too long and unpractical, you always need hours for a Straightening Charm to work," the dark-haired girl explained matter-of-factly, "And yours, dear Cecily, is way too long and asymmetrical. It's as if you are cutting your hair yourself."
I kept quiet, wondering how she had figured that out as I touched my straight, light-brown hair a bit self-consciously. "Whatever, I don't want to spend all day in a hair salon," I said defiantly, "Besides, I need to get to Honeydukes to get all kinds of candy."
"What for?"
"For myself mostly…and for Madam Pomfrey." My two dear friends both came to an abrupt halt.
"You are trying to bribe her?" Lily laughed and I gave her a shrug, "What else can I do?" They just shook their head, "What do you think would be her taste?"
"Cec, you are going to Honeydukes. You won't find anything that will not be to anyone's taste," Lily stated, and I had to agree.
"The shop is across the hair salon," Marlene informed as we reached the village, "You go to there and I will get my hair done in under an hour. Promise!"
"Fine. And we go to the Three Broomsticks after?"
"Deal."
We parted ways with Marlene, Lily deciding to roam around Honeydukes with me to avoid sitting in the salon and possibly getting a hair cut without wanting to.
The bell jingled as I opened the wooden door and I took in the scent of mixed sweets, "Ah, I'm in heaven."
"Agreed," Lily said with a smile. I looked around the many rows of chocolate, gummies and other kinds of teeth-rotting sweets. "Now that I think about it, a Healer would probably not like unhealthy food like this, would they?"
"Please, she is not a dentist. No one can resist these goodies," Lily said, devouring a toffee with a satisfied hum as she handed me one, "Definitely not."
I resolved to pick up a bit of each sweet, resulting in a steadily growing package. Lily's eyes went wide, "Are you serious?"
"No, I'm Sirius," the black-haired boy popped up from behind us out of nowhere, causing us to shriek.
"Bloody Hell, Black! I almost dropped my bag!" I cursed, adjusting my grip on the sweets. Sirius raised his eyebrow as he took a peek inside, "Is this the aftermath of a break-up?"
'I wish,' I thought, shaking my head wordlessly whilst the other three Marauders came up, each with a smaller bag of their own in their hands.
"Hm? The time of the month then?" Remus blanched upon hearing his words whilst James and Peter laughed quietly. "Sirius!"
"What? I'm just wondering why she is buying so many sweets just for herself."
"It's not for myself. It's to bribe someone," I said deftly before moving further down the lane to inspect the other sweets.
"You need to bribe someone?" James asked, following me – or rather Lily, who had left with an eyeroll and was staying a few feet away.
"Yep, for a favour."
"Excuse me but I think you will have other possibilities to…persuade someone," James said suggestively (and loudly) and I had almost dropped the bag again.
"Um, what?" I muttered, turning around to face him only to lean back in surprise upon seeing how close he was. He smirked and it looked kind of…off. My eyes flickered towards his friends, who were suspiciously occupied with whatever was in front of them. "Well…in this case it's an old lady, who will probably be more responsive to chocolate than whatever you are suggesting."
"You know exactly what I'm suggesting." I tried to ignore how red my face must have been at this point until he chuckled, scratching the back of his head, "I'm just messing with you, Grant."
I breathed out, slapping his arm and turning away, "Good." Too bad.
"Now, who is the old lady and what favour do you need? Are you trying to bribe McG for a better grade?"
"You say that as if that would actually be possible."
"Touché," James mused, watching me pick some Chocolate Cauldrons as he munched on a toffee, "Who is it then?"
"Madam Pomfrey," I said, seeing no harm in telling him, "For an internship at the Hospital Wing." A choking sound made me turn around towards him, "You alright there, James?"
"Y-yeah," he said, hitting his chest with his fist a few times before he managed to swallow the rest of the sweet, "You-you want to work at the Hospital Wing?"
"Yep. I could use the internship for future applications as a Healer," I explained, shifting the bag on my arm as the other ached, figuring it would be enough for now.
"Um, is that possible?" James wondered, his face unusually pale as he looked back towards his friends, "I didn't know that."
"Yeah, it is possible. My parents were interns during their time here. But ever since First Year, Madam Pomfrey hasn't recruited anyone."
"Is that so?"
"It's so weird, really," I said mindlessly, munching on a Chocolate Frog, "But I'm gonna try anyway."
"Well, good luck with that," James replied with a high-pitched laugh and I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows, "You sure you are alright there?"
"Yes!" the messy-haired boy said quickly before clearing his throat, "And if you want to convince her to take you in, you should add another of the Pixie Puffs. Those are her favourites."
"How do you know that?"
"I have my ways," James winked, dropping a puff into my bag before grabbing it from me, "Come on, I will carry it for you."
"Um, thanks?" I asked more than stated, following him towards the cashier.
"You are very welcome. Hello Evans," James greeted Lily politely, who was waiting for me at cash desk with raised eyebrows.
"Hello…Potter," she said slowly, widening her eyes at me when he had his back turned towards us, standing in the line. 'What's going on?' she mouthed.
'No freaking idea,' I mouthed back before neutralising my expression as the boy with round glasses turned back, "Have you been to the Three Broomsticks, yet?"
"Nope. Later, though first I apparently need a haircut," I answered, sharing a look with Lily.
"Why is that? Your hair is pretty the way it is," James commented, leaning close once again.
"I said 'apparently', Potter," I told him, leaning back once again before gesturing him to move as the line cleared and I was up to pay.
"Good, you don't need it."
"My thoughts exactly!"
James laughed and Lily cleared her throat, catching our attention, "I'm gonna head out and see if Marlene is done. Would you reserve a table at the pub?" I nodded in agreement and she left, not without another look at James. I noticed him watch after her as soon as her back was turned at him, wondering about his weird behaviour.
He stayed quiet whilst I paid for the sweets before handing me the bag. "Well, I'm off to the Shrieking Shack. See ya!" And he left with his friends. Well, that was abrupt.
The next week consisted of classes, me begging Madam Pomfrey for an internship with a new bag of sweets everyday and James somehow hanging around me outside of class and Quidditch practice. It started with him joining me on study sessions in the library and sitting next to me during breakfast, lunch and dinner or asking to sit with him at the fireplace in the Common Room like right now.
I was trudging through the portrait hole with yet another miserable pout as James called out to me loudly, "Grant, come over!"
"Hey James," I sighed as I plopped down on an armchair next to the loveseat he was sprawled all over. He pouted playfully, "I wanted you to sit next to me."
"How?" I asked, trying to gulp inconspicuously at the lazy smile on his face, "Your limbs are in the way."
"There is more than enough space all over me," he said, gesturing towards his body.
I blushed deeply, causing his grin to widen, and cleared my throat. "Honestly, James. What's up with you lately?"
"What do you mean?"
"You've been acting weird, lately," I pondered and watched him shift uncomfortably, "Spending a lot of time with me when we have never talked outside of class and Quidditch before."
"What is weird about trying to get closer to a Quidditch member? It raises the team spirit," James retorted.
"Raise the team spirit?" I repeated with a raised eyebrow, "We have more than enough team spirit. And I don't see you spending that much time around the other members."
"I have priorities," James said.
"What priorities?"
"You, for one," he replied with a grin.
"…Me?"
"Yeah, you," James sat up, leaning forward on his knees, "You are close to becoming Chaser No. 1."
"What do you mean?" I wondered.
"Angie is going to quit after winter break."
"What?"
"Yes," the brown-eyed boy sighed, running a hand through his already messy hair, "She wants to concentrate on her N.E.W.T.s, so she is leaving the team."
"Who is going to be her substitute?"
"Archie Stan."
"Oh, hell no."
"Oh, hell yes."
"James, Archie and I don't get along," I hissed quietly, "We can't play together."
"You will have to. We will integrate him into Team A practice from the next session on," James explained and smiled at my frown, "Come on. It's not going to be so bad. You could try to get along with him."
"It's not my fault. He is the one, who has a problem with me," I complained, crossing my arms, "Trust me, I doubt we are going to harmonise."
"You will, don't worry," James reassured me, placing a hand on my knee. I stilled at his touch, feeling the warmth of his palm through the leggings I was wearing, "I'm the Captain. And as a Captain, I'm also the designated mediator of the team."
"We are doomed then," I said dryly and he gave me a look, causing me to giggle.
"You meanie," he flicked my knee before leaning back against the couch. We talked more about Quidditch, the current league and discussing, which team would win this year until it was well past midnight.
I went to bed that night with a giddy feeling in my chest and I went to bed with a giddy feeling for the next few weeks as the evening talks became somewhat a ritual between James and me. We would talk about mindless things such as Quidditch, classes and even the meaning of life.
This night, I was a bit late after another visit at the Hospital Wing. I had received a letter of my parents today, expressing their disappointment in me not having started that internship, yet. And of course, I got rejected again by Pomfrey again.
"Hey, what's with the long face?" James asked as I arrived in the Common Room.
I merely groaned, dropping face first onto the loveseat. "So, Madam Pomfrey has rejected you once more?" James asked and I groaned again. "Thought so," James added and I merely grumbled.
"I just don't get why she won't take any interns in," I moaned, turning on my back, "She is so busy, I always see more than ten students every day, she obviously needs help."
"Well, maybe that's exactly why. She probably doesn't have the time to instruct someone when she has so much to do."
"I don't need much instructing…" I said and he gave me a look, "What, you know it!"
"True," he said with a wide smile, causing me to return it. He took my hand in his, squeezing it slightly, "Don't worry. I'm sure she will come around soon."
"Maybe…"
"Did she take the bag of sweets again?"
"Of course, she did."
"Dang it, I was looking forward to some Chocolate Balls." I laughed before reaching into my pocket and throwing a ball at him. With his Seeker's instincts he was able to catch it on time before it hit his face, shooting me a mock reprimanding look before unwrapping the sweet. "Are you gonna try again tomorrow?"
"Yeah…but I don't even know why I bother," I sighed, "It's not like I even want an internship that much."
"Then why do you?"
"My parents want me to."
James raised an eyebrow. "They are both Healers."
"Ah, and they want you to become one, too."
"Yep."
"…And what do you want?" he asked quietly, leaning on his knees.
Sighing heavily, I said, "I just want to play for the Montrose Magpies."
"Oh, it's good they are trying to force you to become a Healer then."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm just joking," James laughed, standing up to sit on the carpet in front of me, "You should pursue that possibility though."
"Oh please. The Montrose Magpies are one of the biggest teams in English league- no, you can't convince me otherwise!" I said as he opened his mouth to protest, "They would never take someone from a school's team."
"Of course, they wouldn't," he agreed, grinning when I pouted, "But you can start with a smaller team. You know, recruiters always come to watch the second leg of the Quidditch games at spring every year. You might catch someone's eye."
"They only look for Seventh Years," I pointed out.
"Well, obviously they don't want to be responsible for students dropping out of school," James said with a 'duh' tone, "But it's a possibility for next year.
And whilst waiting for that you can continue trying for that internship."
"You mean pursue both careers?"
"Exactly. Why do you make a choice now what to do in the future when you don't have to, yet?" James reasoned, "You should open as many doors for you as you can and then make a choice when you have to." I stared at the boy in front of me, watching the light of the fire flicker over his face. I had never found anyone as attractive as him in that moment.
"James, that's the smartest thing anyone has ever said to me and Professor Dumbledore has taught us for one class when McGonagall was sick for a week." The dark-haired boy threw his head back, laughing and I was almost mesmerised by the twinkle in his chocolate brown eyes. I shook my head slightly, looking away for a second before I gave him a warm smile, "Thank you, James."
He nodded, waving his hand dismissively, "Don't mention it."
"I'm serious- don't go there," I warned him as he tried to jump on the pun, "That was a really good advice. Where did that even come from?"
James shrugged with an almost shy look, "My dad is pretty cool, I guess." I laughed. "He told me somewhat the same when I was telling him that I couldn't choose between Quidditch and Auror training."
"Your dad is a wise man."
"He sure is." I smiled, later wondering how long we had sat that night simply staring at each other.

“You know, if you keep stealing my clothes I won’t have anything to wear. I’ll be forced to walk around the apartment completely nude.” Hoseok teased as he spotted you in another one of his shirts.
“Ooooh now that’s an offer I can hardly refuse. Comfy shirts and a handsome man strutting around my house without any clothes. If only he would make me breakfast too.”
“We could call the guys, see if one of them wants to get breakfast together.”
“Nah,” you said, trying to catch the toast before your overly excited toaster could throw it across the room this time. “They’ve all been so busy with work this week. I know you all said to call anytime, but you need to be taking care of yourselves too.”
Hobi started the coffee pot and sat down at the counter, going back into the routine the two of you had fallen into this last week. “Speaking of the other guys, when are you going to tell them? I know you said you wanted a little more time but they deserve to know too, we’re all in this together.”
“I know, I just don’t want to deal with everyone finding out all at once.I’m hanging out with Jimin and Tae tonight, I thought I should probably tell them next so they don’t have to hear it from Jungkook”
“Oooh, I almost forgot about your little date tonight!” Hoseok joked.
You huffed and rolled your eyes at this, ”It’s not a date, Tae finally got an offer from that gallery downtown. He just wanted to check out some of the other photography there to figure out how he wants to set everything up, and then we’re going back to their place to hangout.”
The words you were saying might have been more believable if you hadn’t started burying your face in your hands, trying to will away the heat of embarrassment. After all you were just friends, sure you were having a kid together now but that was it. All of you had slept together over the years, but it wasn’t like you were actually dating any of them. It wasn’t your place to go on dates with Jimin and Tae, or get jealous when one of your friends got a little too handsy with Jin.
Each of you adored one another more than anything, but that’s what friends are for. You’d be kidding yourself to think it was anything more. Hobi seemed to notice something was off, pulling you onto the couch with him as he turned on one of your favourite game shows.
Just as the two of you finally settled on the couch the door was thrown open by Jimin, “Surprise shawty!”
“I swear you’ve been around Jungkook too much again,” You said shaking your head as he strolled into your apartment with makeup bags tucked under his arm and a curling iron in his hand.
You trailed him to the little bathroom attached to your room, lifting yourself to sit on the counter as he started pulling the makeup brushes from their bag. The rest of the guys used to tease the two of you about taking so long to get ready, but you enjoyed the little routine you’d fallen into.
There was a comforting warmth in your chest as he helped you get ready and you were happy to bask in every moment of it, taking in the gentleness of him sweeping the makeup brushes across your skin, his sweet smile right in front of you as he played with one of the curls he just finished, the little furrow of his eyebrows as he tried to focus on getting your eyeliner perfect on the first try.
“Are you ready to go yet?” Taehyung called from the couch.
You glanced over at Jimin, still touching up his makeup in the mirror. “I’m not sure that I’m the one you should be asking. I just have to zip up my dress and then I’m good to go.”
“Hobi, could you give me a hand? I can’t reach the zipper.”
He moved your hair out of the way as he gently tugged the zipper up, but there was just one problem. “Y/N… the zipper’s not going any higher.”
It was one of your looser fitting dresses, you’d been hoping that the higher waistline would let you keep wearing it for a little while longer. Unfortunately the twins were getting bigger every day, which meant that you were too. This wouldn’t have been a problem if you’d have had any time to go shopping for your first set of maternity clothes. Most of your week had been spent wearing one of Hobi’s shirts or the hoodies you stole from Jungkook.
“Houston, we have a problem.” Tae and Jimin looked up as you said this, “None of my clothes are fitting and I can’t keep stealing clothes from you guys. I think it’d be easier if you guys just went without me this time”
Jimin hopped off the counter “Nope, you can borrow something from one of us for now and then we can go buy something for you to wear tonight.”
Before you could even argue you  noticed Tae already giving you puppy dog eyes,  “Please? It wouldn’t be the same without you, and we could have fun picking out clothes too.”
Needless to say the two of them easily suckered you into what was supposed to be a brief shopping trip. It was supposed to be a quick run, but the baby section was right next to the maternity clothes, and it couldn’t hurt to look. Everything was so cute and the three of you ended up going even deeper into the aisles looking at the cribs, stuffed animals, and baby blankets.
“It’s so cute.” Jimin said holding up the tiniest button up you’d ever seen. Tae was right next to him looking at another impossibly small pair of converse. The boys had been piling almost every adorable little baby thing they could find into the cart without you noticing until now.
Reaching into the cart you started picking up each piece on it’s own. There were onesies, dresses, and even little mittens. Everything just felt so tiny and fragile in your hands. “Guys, this is too much. It still feels too soon to be getting all this, they’re still really small and we don’t need all of it right away.”
“You’re right, we already have a lot of the basics anyway.” Tae said as if that were obvious.
“We do?”
“Yea,” Jimin added. “We’ve all ordered a couple things, but Jin and Namjoon have a small collection in the guest room right now.”
You picked up one of the onesies from the cart, tracing the two little elephants printed on the front. Were you really the only one who wasn’t prepared for all this? Maybe this was a sign, you still didn’t feel ready for all this but you had people who were. And that was enough for you to try. “What if we just get two of these, that way they can have matching outfits. Maybe we can come back and get two of the little bouncy chairs in a few months.”
It was hilarious to see the look on their faces once everything clicked. Jimin was trying to keep his makeup from smudging as he fought to hold back tears, and Tae was overjoyed as well, throwing his arms around you and pulling you into a tight embrace.
As the three of you were finally leaving the store with way more than you needed, you noticed Tae frowning as he typed out a message on his phone. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I was just asking Namjoon if we needed to start buying two of everything now.”
“Oh dear,” you muttered as you snatched your phone from your purse trying to get a hold of him before he saw Tae’s message. It wasn’t that you didn’t want him to know, you just felt like he deserved more than just a text from one of the guys.
Pausing for a moment you began to tap your foot chanting “pick up, pick up” over and over again. You were right about to hang up and try again as the ringing came to a halt. “Hey Namjoon, what are you doing right now?”
“I’m at the maknae’s. Why, what’s up?” He sounded out of breath and you swear you could hear Jungkook and Hobi shouting in the background.
Taking a deep breath you figured it’d be best to just rip off the bandaid and tell him as soon as possible. “I wanted to tell you in person, but then Tae texted and I felt like it would be better if I just called and told you myself. And I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, but we’re having twins.”
It went silent for a second before you could hear him laughing through the phone, “You’re fine, Yoongi already told me after you three got back from your appointment. He wanted to know if there was anything we should be doing to help, and I just figured you’d bring it up whenever you were ready.”
“I’m sorry, I should have told you earlier. I promise I’ll get better at talking about all this.”
“What are they like? Do they have their dads’ good looks yet?”
“Not yet, but they have Jimin’s hands.” Glancing to the side you could see him trying to glare at you but failing to hold back a smile.
You didn’t realize they were leading you home until you were taking the elevator to the maknaes’ apartment, Taehyung pulling you through the door as Jimin carried the bags that he managed to sneak away from you. They set everything in the hall and rushed to meet the others in the living room.
As you rounded the corner you could see Jimin yelling at Jungkook again, “Ya! Why didn’t you tell us? I take care of you and you can’t even tell me that I’m about to be a dad of two.”
“How could you keep the twins all to yourself!” Tae jokingly complained as he flopped down onto Jungkook’s lap.
Hobi poked his head out from Jungkook’s room trying to see everyone, “what’s going on?”
Tae looked up and used the puppy eyes he knew none of you could resist as he pouted, “Kookie was keeping the twins all to himself and didn’t tell us about them.”
The face he was making was just too adorable for you to ignore, but before you were able to give him forehead kisses like you had hoped, Jin peeked out from the same room Hobi had come from. Had it been any other day, your eyes may have fallen to the hickeys on his chest, his belt hanging halfway off, or the way his shirt had missing buttons from being torn off by one of the guys. Instead your gaze fell to the saddened look on Jin’s face.
“Was I the only one you didn’t tell?”
The room was uncomfortable silent and you noticed Hobi awkwardly creeping his way back into Jungkook’s room. Jungkook finally broke the silence as he cleared his throat, “I’m just gonna give you guys some space.”
You looked up to see all three of the maknaes getting up to rush into Jungkook’s room and avoid the awkward situation they were leaving you in. “Jin, I’m so sorry.”
“No you’re not. None of you are. I’m the one who’s always been there taking care of all of you, and I’m always the one being left out.”
“That’s not true.”
He sighed and shook his head, “It is. Why do you think I’ve been at your place so much these last couple weeks? I just wanted to feel like I had a part in all of this. It was wrong of me to start betting on how far along you were, but I wasn’t trying to be mean. I just thought if you were a little further along then they might be just mine.”
“Jin, you are just as much a part of this as the rest of us. I didn’t mean to make you feel left out in any way.” You sat down on the couch, pulling him along with you.
He laid next to you and pulled you close to him, wrapping his arms around you and gently placing one hand on your stomach. “I just want to know that all of you are going to be okay. I know you don’t want to talk about everything right away, but you can’t just close me out. If I’m a part of this then I want to do this together as a family.”
“I know, I’m trying.” you said intertwining your hand with his. As much as the two of you like to joke around and bicker with each other, you could never stop caring about Jin. There was something about being wrapped up in his arms that always made you feel safe and cared for. “You know, there’s still a lot I don’t know about you either.”
“I am an open book, ask me anything.”
You knew that was true for the most part, Jin and you might constantly annoy one another but the two of you shared everything… well almost everything. “What’s that story you won’t let Joonie tell me.”
“Let me rephrase that. Ask me anything else.”
“I mean, if neither of you will tell me I could just ask Hobi.”
“There’s a reason we don’t talk about it. It might be the only secret that Hoseok can keep.”
“Come on, you already told me about the time you ran over two kids and almost broke your nose trying to sled with Joon. What’s so bad you can’t tell me, weren’t we best friends?”
“Yes, which is why I’m not telling you.”
“Ok, what about this? You tell me what happened, and if the twins are both boys you get to name one of them whatever you want.”
You hadn’t noticed the other boys leaving the room they were hiding in until Namjoon walked into the room and immediately sent Jin a warning look, “Don’t do it.”
Jin didn’t even hesitate as he blurted out, “A couple years ago Namjoon and I got married in Vegas!”
Everyone’s heads whipped towards the eldest man as he said that, the youngest of the group in shock and the older half already shaking their head or roaring with laughter. You however were wondering if you’d even heard that right, surely your best friend at the time wouldn’t get married without telling you. “You what now?”
Noticing everyone’s eyes on him, Jin’s face began to grow red as a tomato. “Remember when you went on vacation with the maknaes and the rest of us went to Vegas? Well, we met this guy dressed as Elvis, had a couple drinks, and played the slot machines. Next thing I know it’s two days later and I find a video of us getting married by a drag queen.”
“Jin, what the fuck?”

aaron & the family he's found all by himself; vol. 2 // vol. 1
( ft. short jokes, a belated birthday shopping trip, & an ultra-chaotic winter break )
( for @criswisstuff & anyone who enjoyed the first one <3 )
savannah, who is 5'9, is constantly teasing aaron and cleo for being short. katelyn's good at 5'6, and also a bit impossible to tease bcs she's the actual best, so she gets to escape this
cleo ( 5'2 ) is perfectly delighted to have someone shorter than her for once in her life, even by only 2 inches
aaron: guys, just try and see this from my point of view
sav: [ collapses ]
katelyn: [ crouches down ]
cleo: [ sits cross-legged on floor ]
aaron: dude you're literally 2 inches taller than me
cleo: 2 and a quarter
sav is so smug about this but in a good-natured way, in that she and cleo call aaron "kid" or "kiddo" or "pipsqueak" and he doesn't mind bcs they always say it w such a huge smile and he likes to respond to sav with "how's the weather up there, tall-ass?"
and katelyn thinks it's ridiculously adorable how tiny aaron is and obviously she uses him as an armrest all the time
katelyn, petting aaron's hair: guys guys omg he's like an angsty mini blond kitten and i would kill for him <3
sav, popping up between them: mini-yard :))
before i get super distracted, i just wanna mention that aaron met sav and cleo towards the end of november, so they missed the twin's birthday
but sav still insists that she must take him shopping bcs sure his fashion sense is fine but there's always room for improvement, isn't there, aaron??
he relents, so long as she and cleo and katelyn ( who already gave him a birthday present?? why's she doing this??? ) don't spend too much money
sav drags him all around south carolina to the best thrift stores she can find and cleo and katelyn are amazed that she can get such fantastic deals on the supermodel clothes she wears
fr she's literally a fashion design major ( + minoring in business management ) and she shows up to class in skilfully done drugstore makeup and an absolutely killer outfit for like 15 bucks
she grew up poor, and she's still poor now, even if she ( thankfully ) managed to scrape a cheerleading scholarship
sav, flicking through a rack of dresses labelled $4 apiece: RIP to little miss rich bitch reynolds but i'm different ;)
no hate to allison she's awesome but she grew up in the lap of luxury surrounded by designer brands so she knows NOTHING about thrifting and rationing money in general
oh and sav and allison have kind of a frenemies thing going on bcs they're both fighting for the top spot of their fashion design course
they spend the whole day shopping and aaron ends up with a highly upgraded wardrobe that contains a lot of cute pastel stuff and sav's promise to do his makeup
aaron insists on paying for dinner at the really nice pizza place a short drive from campus even tho they all protest
and andrew knows he's found new friends, but has no idea that it's the vixens and he's dating one of them. nicky does tho, but he's sworn to secrecy
nicky thinks his new clothes are adorable and is stunned when aaron tells him the total cost
"oh my GOD that girl sounds like a genius."
"yeah, her name's sav. you guys,, would get along, i think."
okay now for the winter break part!!
i think that you can get permission to stay at dorms if you're an international student or something??
anyways since sav's super upset bcs her father straight-up told her not to come home bcs he has a new girlfriend ( god i hate sav's father )
katelyn would stay with her, but her dad can finally have her home in new york for christmas and she really doesn't want to miss it
cleo, the only one with a properly functional family, is going back to her big family house and loving parents and grandma and aunt and siblings and cousins. love that for her.
so aaron and sav are stuck at psu for 2 weeks and aaron's surprisingly cool with this. and sav's excited bcs for the first time since her mom died, she can spend her christmas with someone she actually wants around instead of her shitty-ass father and his constant stream of bitchy girlfriends
they spend a lot of time together, stealing food from the athlete's dining hall to make their own weird combos, which usually ends with aaron making something Cool and Interesting and sav gagging and spitting out whatever strange concoction she had previously insisted would taste good
i literally can't bring myself to give a shit about the twinyards' deal bcs andrew literally became best friends with renee?? and hooks up with guys at eden’s??? idk what's going on there but it's like andrew is trying to control aaron's life while he can do whatever he wants??? and honestly wtf????
also let me just make it clear that i ADORE andrew so so much he's one of my favourite comfort characters ever but i'm not gonna make excuses for his shitty behaviour. i fully believe he heals and puts away his pride to apologise to aaron, nicky, and kevin for his treatment of them
that's definitely not to say that aaron's internalised homophobia isn't eww, but with so many important people in his life gay, he makes a huge effort to get over it
so andrew just thinks that aaron is spending a lot of time in the library or out with nicky or something
and when aaron tells sav about this deal, she's kinda horrified, but it's pretty clear to her that aaron so desperately wants to fix his relationship with his brother, and she's not in any place to discourage him, is she?
the only thing she can do is hope that he won't come out all the worse for it
and stare at the boy curled up on the other end of the pale pink sofa cleo's parents had gotten, wonder just how much shit he'd been put through, and decide she was going to be his best friend
aaron's face has gone entirely impassive. sav nudges his fluffy-socked foot with her own, then reaches out to smooth the crease between his eyebrows. "careful, you'll wrinkle your pretty little face."
aaron is very caught off guard by this, and very promptly flushes bright red, which contrasts with the pale teal hoodie he stole from katelyn
"okay, enough talk about depressing crap. wanna go make christmas cookies now?"
"yeah."
so they make christmas cookies. well, it was supposed to be christmas cookies, but it turns into double chocolate fudge cookies somewhere along the line. neither of them knows how
them baking together is the definition of chaos. they're still blasting songs, and sav is singing along terribly
"yOu'Re A mEaN oNe, Mr. GrInCh," while poking aaron's cheek as he tries to mix something. he throws a handful of flour at her. "yOu ReAlLy ArE A hEel."
anyways obviously sav retaliates and that ends in a flour fight. it only stops when aaron deadass cracks an egg on sav's head and she smears chocolate into his hair
she also tries to make him sing along to baby, it's cold outside
"i'Ve GoT tO Go `wAAyyy~" she holds a spatula up to his face
"go away."
they video call katelyn, who takes one look at the mess in the cramped dorm kitchen and sighs so loudly and dramatically that her dad pops in and asks if everything's okay
aaron freezes up at the sight of him and sav quickly turns off the camera, bcs they both want to make good impressions on him, and being covered in various cookie ingredients just won't cut it, ya know?
the cookies turn out delicious and sav sends all their group chat various photos of the process, most of which consist of selfies with her making goofy faces while aaron is simultaneously baking and flipping off the camera
plus a several videos of sav enthusiastically dancing and mouthing the lyrics of, as follows, all i want for christmas is you, let it snow, and santa claus is coming to town and aggressively pointing a spatula at aaron
"c'mon aari, just sing! please??? please???? please you can do it i believe in you!!"
finally he just. gives up. "okay, you know what? fine, i'll sing to ONE and then you will STOP bothering me you insolent dumbass."
sav beams. santa baby starts playing. aaron is very clearly going through five stages of grief in 0.5 seconds
"go on," sav says sweetly as she slides in next to a pouting aaron, "i'll sing with you."
sav slings an arm around his shoulder and sways with him, so it's just her doing that and him grumpily mumbling the lyrics
and when the cookies are cooling down, they start cleaning the kitchen up. aaron rubs some spilled egg yolk into sav's hair but it goes pretty okay otherwise, since they're just listening to more christmas songs and chatting about light stuff, like aaron's biochem course, sav's fashion course, and their dumb classmates
aaron mostly listens tho, and learns that sav kind of hates allison reynolds for giving up her inheritance when she would do ANYTHING for even the tiniest fraction of that money
but she still thinks allison's gorgeous bcs c'mon
and that sav's dream is to one day open her own boutique!!
aaron spends most of the actual christmas day with the monsters at eden's bcs nicky and andrew wanted to
he spent a lot of the time texting on their group chat
doessavvyisgay: so u just go to a nightclub every week??
unaliveme: i mean yeah, i literally worked here for a while. we needed money and nicky was already working 2 jobs night and day

He Cheng’s back story au:
Okay guys! Here it comes. I’m sorry for dropping this on you guys, but I can’t help it. Hope you guys will read it till the end. And please let me know what you think of it!!! Enjoy! 🌝😗
*****
The school bell rang signalling the end of school session for that day. After his Math teacher left the class, He Cheng packed all of his stuff. Ready to go home. The others were still hanging around in the class chit chatting. He Cheng was never a part of that. He was never allowed to be part of it. As he walked down the stairs, someone called him.
“Cheng! Wait up!” Who could it be?
It was his classmate, Long Wei. He’s slightly taller than He Cheng with a black hair. Unlike He Cheng, he always had his hair down. He Cheng stopped on the stairs waiting for Long Wei to catch up to him.
“Hi,” Long Wei greeted. No answer from He Cheng.
“Ahh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out or anything. Hahaha. Going home already?” Long Wei chuckled.
“Yeah,” He Cheng replied simply.
“Then, let’s walk together,” Long Wei said. He started walking down the stairs, leading a confused He Cheng.
He Cheng was not someone who talk a lot. Most of the time, Long Wei did the talking. He asked He Cheng a lot of questions. He Cheng was not sure why Long Wei suddenly showed an interest in him. They never talked to each other before. Nevertheless, He Cheng answered all of the questions. With short answers of course.
After a while, they came to a junction. “Alright, I have to go left here. You go right, right?” another question from Long Wei. He Cheng nodded but he scrunched his nose a little bit hearing what Long Wei said. “Ah! I was not stalking you or anything. It’s just that I always saw you since we’re taking the same route,” Long Wei tried to explain himself. “Where are you going?” He Cheng asked, suddenly. “Me? Oh! I’m going to a boxing class. Someone I know teaches it. So, sometimes I go there to learn a thing or two. Hahahaha,” Long Wei answered earnestly. “Is that why you always have your hands wrapped?” He Cheng was curious. “Ahhh yeahhh...I’m still learning so I tend to injure myself,” Long Wei chuckled again. “See you at school tomorrow, yeah?” Long Wei added. Again, He Cheng only nodded. Then they parted ways.
‘That was fun,’ He Cheng thought.
*****
After that, Long Wei always accompanied He Cheng at school. Sometimes, Long Wei would stay a little later until He Cheng was finished with his cleaning duty. Then, they walked home together. He Cheng didn’t mind it at all. All his life, he never had a close friend. Not that he hated people or the other way round, but his father always warned him that he did not need friends. So, he never tried to have one because he did not want to deal with his father unnecessarily. But this time, he wanted different. He wanted to be friend with Long Wei. There’s something about him that attracted He Cheng. His friendliness? His warm smile? His laugh? Or maybe it’s the way he always looked at He Cheng. Who knew.
*****
After months of hanging out together, He Cheng managed to talk a lot more with Long Wei. It was Friday, so Long Wei asked He Cheng to go hang out a little longer.
“Hey, wanna go grab some ice cream? Or drinks?” He asked He Cheng. He Cheng looked a bit reluctant at first. “C’mon. It won’t be long. I promise,” Long Wei tried to convince He Cheng. “Okay,” He Cheng replied.
They went to buy ice-creams and stopped to eat them by the river not too far from the ice cream shop. There was a long railing by the river, so they leaned on it while finishing their ice-crems. They did not say anything. Just standing there and enjoyed both the view and their ice-creams. Once they finished them, they stayed by the river a little longer.
“Why do you take the boxing class?” He Cheng asked.
“Easy. So that I can get stronger,” Long Wei answered.
“Why?”
Long Wei looked at He Cheng and chuckled before he answered, “So that I can protect people. My friends. My family. You.” Long Wei threw a quick glance at He Cheng. Like usual, He Cheng did not show much emotion on his face, but he asked again, “Why?”
“I don’t know. Isn’t that what people normally do? Wanting to protect the people that they love?” Long Wei’s answer stunned He Cheng. He knew what it meant. His heart started to beat faster.
“What about you? Don’t you have anyone you want to protect?”
He Cheng was silent for a while before he answered, “My brother.”
“I didn’t know you have a brother,” Long Wei said while digging through his pocket.
“Yeah. He was born last year.”
“I see. 13 years gap is a lot.”
He Cheng remained silent, staring onto the river. He had nothing to add to that. Long Wei took out a cigarette out of the pack he just took out of his pocket. He Cheng looked at Long Wei. This time, his face showed a curious expression.
“You smoked?”
“Oh this? Nahhh. I just put in on my lips. I never light one up.”
“Why?” Again.
“Ahahahahaha. You really love that question huh?” Long Wei bursted out laughing. He Cheng’s heart beat even faster.
“My late brother used to smoke this. I guess I’m used to the smell? Besides, it tastes pretty good,” Long Wei explained.
“What does it taste like?”
“You wanna know? You can try it,” Long Wei handed He Cheng the cigarette that he had on his lips. Then, He Cheng leaned closer to the cigarette. But before his lips reached it, it met another pair of lips. Soft lips. Long Wei’s lips. That’s when He Cheng’s heart stopped beating. Long Wei pulled away from He Cheng’s lips but this time, their foreheads met.
“Do you like the taste?” Long Wei’s voice was almost a whispher.
“Can I try it again?”
This time, Long Wei’s heart stopped beating. He Cheng leaned in to kiss Long Wei again. Unlike the first time, their kiss now lasted longer. Deeper. Tongue met another tongue. Discovering each others’ mouth. Gasping for air. He Cheng’s back met the railing, entrapped between Long Wei’s hands. They seemed to forget where they were. Fortunately, nobody was there anyway.
Long Wei pulled away again. “Cheng, I-,” before he could finish his sentence, he was cut off.
“Young master Cheng,” both Long Wei and He Cheng was startled hearing someone called out He Cheng’s name. It was Mr. Huan, He Cheng’s father’s personal assistant. He had been serving He Cheng’s father ever since He Cheng was a baby.
“My apologies. I didn’t mean to interrupt you but Master He will be home soon. It’s best if you come home now.”
He Cheng knew what would happen even without Mr. Huan saying it. He Cheng looked back to Long Wei. “I’m sorry. I have to go now,” He Cheng than walked towards the car that was already waiting. Before he could walk farther, Long Wei grabbed his hand, “See you at school, next week?” He Cheng smiled weakly before he continued walking wishing that Long Wei did not let go of his hand. Mr. Huan looked at Long Wei and bowed, “Excuse me.” He then joined He Cheng in the car. Long Wei watched the car went away.
*****
“STOPPP! NO!!” The elderly woman screamed as the men in black shirts kept on thrashing her small shop. “PLEASE!!! DON’T DO THIS!!” She cried. All of her stuff was wrecked by the men.
Long Wei was on his way home from his weekend part time job when he heard the elderly woman. It was his neighbour. He ran towards the shop. When he saw all the men, he started fighting them. “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS DOING?” He screamed. He punched one of the men only to be beaten by the others. They were so much bigger than him. Much stronger. Ignoring all the pain, Long Wei kept on fighting back. Then, he was hit hard on his head. As he fell down, his head hit the floor causing more blood to come out. Long Wei was unconscious. The elderly woman came running to him, trying to wake him up. But her effort was useless. The men were still destroying her belongings. They only left after they found some valuables that they took.
*****
He Cheng ran. He ran as fast as he could. He ran when he heard about Long Wei. He was walking to his room when he heard one of his father’s men reported to him. At first, he didn’t pay attention to it. But when he heard the name of a certain shop, he knew where it was. Long Wei had mentioned the name of the shop before. His heart dropped when he heard the report.
It was raining heavily, and it’s starting to get dark. He Cheng’s mouth started to get dry. He felt his chest closing in on him. He hated to think that something bad might happen to Long Wei but his instinct screamed it to him.
‘Oh God! Please let me be wrong!’ He Cheng prayed.
Once he arrived at the small shop, his heart dropped once again. He Cheng could see two figures in front of the shop. He ran towards them.
“LONG WEI!!” He screamed.
“What happened to him?” he asked frantically to the elderly woman.
“He tried to fight the men just now. One of them hit him on the head and then he fell,” the woman was still crying. Shaking.
He Cheng tried to wake Long Wei up. He tapped on his cheeks couple of times. Nothing. Without wasting anymore time, he carried Long Wei on his back. He Cheng struggled a little bit since Long Wei was taller than him.
“I’m going to bring him to the nearest hospital,” He Cheng said to the woman before he started running again. The rain did not stop him. The cold did not stop him. Not even the ache in his heart could stop him.
‘Please! Hang in there!’
*****
After two hours in the emergency room, Long Wei was brought to a ward.
“He had a bad injury on his head. There are some other injuries on his body too. He’s in a critical condition, but we did our best to save him,” what the doctor said kept on ringing in his head.
He Cheng looked at Long Wei. He had the oxygen masked on. The monitor showed that his heart beat slowly. Lots of wires connected to Long Wei’s body. He Cheng’s mind went blank. To him, time had stopped. To him, nothing matters anymore.
‘He’s my only friend. You took my mother. Do you have to take him too?’ he cursed in his heart.
He Cheng heard a small knock on the door, so he turned around. Mr. Huan was standing just outside the ward.
“What are you doing here?” He Cheng asked dryly.
“I’m just checking out on you, Young master Cheng,”
“Are you sure you’re not here to drag me home?” Mr. Huan could sense venom in He Cheng’s word.
“No, I’m not,” he answered short.
“What about father?” He Cheng frowned.
“You don’t have to worry about Master He.”
One thing about Mr. Huan, he never failed to protect He Cheng. Mr. Huan had always backed He Cheng up whenever he had to deal with his father.
“Thank you,” was all He Cheng could muster.
*****
It has been a week since Long Wei’s death. It has been one whole week since he lost his first friend. It has been one week since He Cheng lost his first love. At the funeral, He Cheng couldn’t stop his tears. He remembered that night when the monitor suddenly beeped so loudly, waking him up from his sleep. He stayed by Long Wei’s bed. The nurses and doctor came running into the ward.
“What’s happening to him?” He panicked.
“Sir, you need to wait outside!!” One of the nurse forced He Cheng out of the ward. They were racing against the time.
“Please! Please save him! He’s my friend!” He Cheng managed to say before the nurse closed the door right in front of him.
At the funeral, he also remembered what the doctor said when he walked out of the ward. His steps were slow and small.
“I’m sorry. We tried our best.” That’s when the darkness consumed He Cheng.
Now, he’s standing in front of Long Wei’s grave. Hoping that this was all a dream. A bad dream. He Cheng started crying again. The pain in his heart was too much. If he knew losing a friend hurt this bad, he would have listened to his father. But how could someone deny a blessing in their life?
*****
He Tian was crying so hard in front of him. He Cheng was trying to stop the blood on his right shoulder.
“I shouldn’t have brought you out camping.”
“It’s all my fault...” He Tian cried.
“If you got washed away, the old man would have killed me.”
“Waaaa...brother..” more and more tears came out of He Tian’s eyes.
“Don’t cry. Listen well,” He Tian tried so hard to calm himself down.
“I hate weaklings. If you want to rescue others in the future... then you must become the strongest of them all,” He Cheng added. Then, He Tian helped his brother to put on a bandage on his shoulder.
He Cheng decided to camp for one night since he managed to control the bleeding. After all, He Tian had begged him to go camping for a while now. Suddenly, He Tian asked him a question. One that he, too, once asked.
“Brother, why do we need to be strong to rescue others?”
Silent.
“I don’t know. Maybe because it’s what people normally do. Protecting the people that they love.”
He Tian looked at his brother, not knowing what to say.
“You should go to sleep. We’ll go home tomorrow morning.”
“Goodnight, brother.”
“Goodnight.”

It's that time once again when Diabolical plays in my head on loop.
Can I please get fic where Hels gets back on hermitcraft server? Causing some shenanigans and general trouble?
This was so much fun to write, thank you!! It also ended up being WAY more angsty than I expected but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it anyway, my friend :) Slight CW: minor descriptions of injuries
...
Welsknight had been avoiding his nether portal as much as possible since he saw his doppelganger disappear through it. Something about the formerly harmless particles and whooshing noise when he walked past it now just about gave him an anxiety attack every time he walked past it. Once, when Jevin popped out of it to say hello just hours after Helsknight had left, Wels had reacted so violently that Jevin was STILL wary around him all these months later.
Nobody used his portal anymore. He made sure of that.
One sunny day, he finally worked up the courage to go to the shopping district, something he hadn’t dared to do in weeks in case something happened. He went straight past his own portal and flew all the way to Etho’s; there was no way he was going to use the portal his evil clone went through to go back to the hell dimension from which he had come.
The shopping district had changed a lot in the weeks Wels had been avoiding it. He couldn’t help staring around at the myriad of new shops that had sprung up. It almost seemed like an entirely new place.
As Wels entered the barge, he found another Hermit already inside, browsing the chest full of golden carrots.
“Hi, Joe,” said Wels politely, unable to hide a smile at the sight of his old friend.
Joe turned and gave him a wave. “Howdy, Wels. Haven’t seen you around here for a few weeks.”
“Yeah, it’s been… a while. Just been busy, that’s all.” Wels awkward;y indicated the chest. “You, uh… buying stuff?”
“Nah, I’m not dealing with diamonds this season. I thought Grian might be open to some kind of trading system using stuff other than diamonds but he hasn’t responded to my message yet, so in the meantime, I’m-.” He broke off with a frown. “Okay, I think I might have forgotten to actually send the message.”
Wels chuckled. “You’re busy too, huh? You only start forgetting stuff when you’ve got a lot on your mind.”
Joe matched his chuckle. “I’ve got quite a few projects going at the moment, yes. You wanna come over to my base sometime and I’ll show you what I’m working on?”
  “That sounds nice, Joe, thanks.”
At that moment, the sound of a firework going off nearby caused both of them to look up. A second later, a figure glided through the door and landed neatly on the ground, his elytra closing as he took a few steps further into the room. “Hey, Wels,” Etho said, giving a friendly wave. “Man, you really got here fast.”
Wels frowned at his friend. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I just saw you over by Shade-E-E’s a minute ago. You said hello to me and everything.”
  “That…” Wels’s heart skipped a beat. “That wasn’t me.”
Etho frowned back. “Well, then… Someone must’ve stolen a spare set of armour or something, cuz it looked exactly like you.”
“Oh…” Blinking very fast, Wels let out a nervous breath. “Oh, boy… Please don’t tell me he’s back…”
Etho and Joe exchanged a confused look. “Who?” asked Joe.
Wels considered either making something up or dismissing his comment, but looking at the concerned faces of two of his best friends on the server, he decided to tell the truth. “The evil clone of myself that Beef and I accidentally created who ran off into the nether after I beat him in a rap battle when he tried to destroy the server.”
Etho stared at him with wide eyes.
“I thought it might be something like that,” said Joe, nodding.
“How can you possibly have been expecting that?” Wels said in disbelief.
  Joe shrugged. “I’ve heard weirder.”
“Well… anyway. His name is Helsknight and he’s from a nether-like dimension called Hels, apparently. I thought I’d driven him back to where he came from but I should’ve known he wouldn’t stay away for long.”
“To be frank, beating him in a rap battle isn’t quite as definitive as beating him in PVP,” said Joe.
Wels scowled. “The last time I tried PVP, you dropped an anvil on my head from a great height.”
“Oh yeah.” Joe snickered. “I did.”
“Leaving that aside,” said Etho, “it seems there’s an evil clone of you loose on the server, so we should probably deal with that. Helsknight, you said his name is?”
Wels nodded. “He looks exactly like me except his eyes are red, his armour is slightly greyer than mine, and his hair is a darker shade of blond.”
“Ohh, I noticed the darker armour,” said Etho. “I just thought it was the shade from my shop. I guess we’d better go find him, huh?”
“Yeah, I need to find him before he causes any more chaos. You guys should probably warn the other Hermits so they-.”
“No, we’re coming with you to find him,” Etho interrupted.
“It’ll be quicker if the three of us look together,” Joe added. “Plus, I’ve never met an evil clone before, so it would be rather thrilling to do so.”
Wels frowned at his friends. “Are you sure? He’s really dangerous. I don’t know exactly what he’s capable of, but he’s from a hellfire dimension, so...”
“As sure as the day is long,” replied Joe, patting his friend on the shoulder. “You need our help and we aren’t gonna abandon you.”
As Etho nodded, Wels gave a small smile. “Thank you, guys. I really appreciate it.”
“No worries. So where should we look first?” asked Etho.
“Well…” Wels thought for a moment. “He’s probably trying to cause some shenanigans on the server. If we check certain prominent places on the server, we’ll probably find him trying to lure me out somehow.”
“I’ll check the rest of the shopping district, then,” said Joe. “He might still be here.”
“I’ll have a look round the nether hub and the Upside Down,” Etho added. “You said he’s from a nether-like dimension so he might gravitate there. What about you, Wels?”
“I’m going to Bdubs’s castle,” said Wels. “It’s the most medieval build on the server, so if he isn’t there now, he’ll end up there eventually.”
“Okay, but be careful, Wels,” Etho said softly. “Don’t do anything reckless.”
  “I won’t.”
With that, the group split up.
Wels flew straight over to Bdubs’s base. As he got closer, he couldn’t help marvelling at the sheer size and grandeur of the cliff and the castle sitting atop it. It was one of the grandest bases on the servers, so Wels felt sure he would find his clone here.
He landed atop the cliff and started looking around. As he explored further, he spotted the person he was looking for standing at the entrance to Bdubs’s castle.
“If you’re looking for your little friend Bdoubleo, he’s in the nether,” crowed Helsknight. “I watched him go through his portal.”
Wels glared up at his doppelganger. “You know I’m not looking for Bdubs.”
“Are you here to rap battle with me again, then?” Helsknight grinned. “I warn you: I’ve been practising.”
Shaking his head, Wels drew his sword. “No, Hels. I’m going to do what I should have done in the first place.”
Helsknight sighed and drew his own sword. “So boring. Come on, then.”
His doppelganger’s relaxed, indifferent manner sent a bolt of anger straight into Wels. Letting out a yell, he charged to attack.
Their battle lasted at least ten minutes, though to Wels, it felt like hours. He poured all his energy into his swings, attacking his evil clone with all the rage and fear that had threatened to consume him since Helsknight had disappeared into the nether all those months ago. He was done letting his negative emotions control his life.
Finally, Wels managed to knock Helsknight’s sword out of his hand and kick him to the ground, aiming his own sword at his evil clone’s neck.
Helsknight simply grinned evilly up at him. “You gonna kill me, Welsy? I wouldn’t do it if I were you; we Hels Hermits only get stronger when we die. If you kill me, I’ll come back with a vengeance. We have a special lava fountain in Hels that can-.”
“Oh, shut up,” snapped Wels suddenly. “I’m not going to kill you, but not because of any stupid threats you make. I don’t care what you have in Hels. I’m not going to kill you, because I’m merciful. But if you ever come back here again, I won’t be so forgiving. Do you understand?”
Helsknight simply stared back at him. “You’ve got some great friends here, Welsy. Better hold onto them in case something… happens.”
Wels narrowed his eyes. “You stay away from them. I swear to god, if you-.”
He hadn’t realised that he had lowered his hand slightly until Helsknight moved, fast as lightning, and kicked the sword out of his hand. Before he could react, Helsknight jumped up and grabbed him by the throat. He took two steps forward and threw Wels over the edge of the cliff.
The fall seemed to take only a split second, but the cliff was tall enough that Wels’s left leg broke immediately upon impacting the ground. He lay still in shock, too numb to cry, despite the searing pain in his leg, which was folded painfully underneath his body.
Helsknight appeared above him and effortlessly picked him up off the ground, again by the throat. He grinned, his face less than a foot from Wels’s.
“You know what else we have in Hels?” Helsknight taunted. “Fire. Lots of fire.”
He lifted his free hand, which was now engulfed in burning hot flames. Wels weakly struggled in his grip, trying to lean as far away from his counterpart as possible, as Helsknight slowly moved the fire closer to his face, taunting him with the fact that he couldn’t escape it.
The flames started to burn his face. He held his breath, trying not to let his pain show, trying not to give Helsknight the satisfaction.
But finally, he couldn’t hold it in any longer. He let out a cry at the burning agony across the side of his face.
Helsknight barked a laugh and retracted his hand, as if all he’d been after was a reaction from Wels. “Maybe you should stick with the rap battles next time.”
With that, he dropped Wels on the ground and walked away.
Wels lay where he fell, unable to move through the burning pain in his face and leg. His chest moved quickly up and down as he struggled for oxygen, still winded from the battle.
“Wels!” yelled a familiar voice from somewhere behind him.
Seconds later, Joe appeared on his right and Etho on his left, their worried faces peering down at him.
  “Is he okay?” Joe gasped.
“H-His face…!” Etho gently touched Wels’s burnt cheek. Wels could feel his friend’s cool fingers trembling. “Wels, can you hear me?”
Wels couldn’t speak, couldn’t reassure his friends that he would be okay. His leg would heal. His face, he wasn’t sure yet. The only thing he knew wouldn’t heal was the crushing feeling of failure, of knowing that because of said failure, an evil clone of himself was still running around the server, potentially hurting people he cared about. The pain in his leg and face served as an agonising reminder that he wasn’t strong enough to stop his doppelganger.
How was he supposed to protect other people when he couldn’t even protect himself?

“Love Again” (Youngbin x Reader)
Genre: Romance, Angst
Synopsis: Scared by your last heartbreak, for a long time you’ve guarded your feelings to not get hurt again. You’ve kept your walls up at anyone one who tried to knock them down. Will Youngbin be the one to help you experience love again? Requested by @greeneyedivy. Also titled and work inspired by BAEKHYUN’s ‘Love Again’
When you met Youngbin you knew this would happen. You couldn’t describe how you did, but you knew your intuition was never wrong. Once you had that gut feeling, you tried everything you could to not succumb to him. You couldn’t afford to, is what you told yourself. You’d blame it on work and schooling. Saying you were too busy and that dating would just be a distraction. Meanwhile both you and friends knew you could balance things well on your plate. Working and schooling was a huge work load, but you still manage to ace your classes while simultaneously paying for your classes. You had yourself fooled, but the more Youngbin tugged at your heart, you knew you couldn’t resist it anymore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You first met hanging out with friends one night, you all decided to go eat out and go to karaoke. Your friend wouldn’t stop talking about this guys she wanted you to meet.
“Yeah his name is Youngbin. He’s a mutual friend.”
“Oh yeah?” You asked wanting her to think that you wanted her to keep going, but if she were really listening, should would know you couldn’t care less. The two of you are almost at the barbecue spot where all of you were going to meet up, the taxi only a few minutes away. “Yeah I think he seems like your type of guy. I’ve only met him a few times myself and he seems so sweet.”
She keeps going not giving any regard to whether you’re listening still, which you weren’t. Ever since you end your last relationship you’re friend has tried to set you up with countless people and each connection never lasted. She blamed you for giving it a try, which she was right. But it was because you weren’t ready to let anyone else in yet. At least you thought.
Five minutes later the two of you exit the taxi car after paying and walk into the bar.
The ambience was different from any bar you’ve gone to. The warm amber lights lit every corner, along the walls of the building, down to the bottoms of the counters. It was a signature that you greatly appreciated and wished more places would include.
You see a friend wave you guys over a little ways down the counter, with another friend you haven’t seen in a while next to him and a guy with that you had never seen before. He didn’t wave but he just smiled. You didn’t notice the smile of his face because the first smile you saw was in his eyes. Very unique to him, they weren’t a shape you sure you had seen before. Strangely that has somewhat sparked your interest. His eyes.
They were so welcoming, comforting. Your mind wasn’t changed either when you and your friend approached them and started to talk about all the things that happened since the last time you saw each other. When he spoke he had a voice that was so tender and kind. You were loving what your were seeing and hearing, but it sealed the deal for you when you heard him laugh. Although he laughed a lot, it was the cutest thing you’ve ever heard. But right when you found yourself instinctively smiling at the sound of it at him, you felt panciked. Liking all these about him already and thinking this way, made you panick. It was terrifying.
After food and drinks you went to karaoke. You couldn’t have as much fun as you wanted because you were so I your head the entire time. You wanted to make a good impression on Youngbin, and yet, you thought it shouldn’t matter because you weren’t sure if you could handle any guys attention right now. As your friends sing drunkenly, having fun to their wits end, Youngbin scoots over to you. You try to force a smile when he comes closer, but you fidget with your fingers when he’s close enough to press slightly against your left thigh with his.
“Are you okay?” This was the first thing he said to you since you’ve been out, after introducing yourselves to each other.
“Yeah, great. Grand.”
You tried your best to act like you were really okay, so much so you tried to covince yourself.
He then places his soft hand right over both of yours as a way to stop your thumbs from fidgeting.
“If you’re not okay, you don’t have to act like it. It’s okay if you’re not,” you look up at him with his lips pursed and his eyes smiling solemnly back at you. Then you started to really feel your heart pound.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been a few months after the two of you met that he finally confessed to you. You were with him one night, after having been snowed in for the last few hours one day. Throughout the day he was giving you updates on how he was going to either find a way back home or crash a friends near by. You really wanted to invite him to stay, not wanting him to struggle out in the snow.
“Bin.”
“Yeah?”
“You know you can just stay here right?”
He turns to you, sitting on the couch opposite of you, “Me staying here?”
“Why not?”
He stared at you, eyes wide and blank, “Are....you sure you want that? That you can handle me being here?”
“What exactly do you mean by that?”
You looked at him disshoveled. What was he talking about? You were nothing but good friends at this point, you just trying to help him out.
“I mean,” he moves closer to you, his eyes looking different then the soft, warm eyes that you usually see. “You know how much I really like you right?”
You were so confused. You definitely liked him sure and you thought he knew that, but just assumed he didn’t feel the same. You just thought he just liked hanging at your place and having you cook for him as a friend. “W-what?” Your voice felt so tiny for you, you were completely taken aback.
“You never knew? I thought I was making it obvious. So obvious.”
You continue to stare back blankly. “I’ve liked you since the moment we met. The moment I laid eyes on you that night, across the bar when you found us.”
Your heart started to pound again, yes from the words he was saying, but more so from the never ending fear. The crippling fear that you could never shake, the fear of doubt.
“W-well what do you want me to say?”
He backs away and his looks confused, “Well, you don’t have to say anything. I just thought you knew this whole time that’s all, but I guess not. You don’t have to say anything to my confession if you don’t want to. At least not now.”
You looked down at your fidgeting fingers again, not knowing what to say. He moves over to cover your hands, “I can tell you aren’t a fan on the idea of me liking you. At least not now.” You look up at him, “It’s because you’re not ready right?”
You nod at him. “I know healing takes time. So I won’t rush you at all. But as soon as you’re ready, you’ll know I’m always going to be around.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that night, you fell asleep in your room with Youngbin sleeping in the living room. He made sure to make it evident that he was going to stay right on the couch and sleep there all night. You knew he wouldn’t do anything to harm you. You were oddly comfortable with him, you were surprised he wasn’t. Or maybe he was, too comfortable at that.
You thought about the things he said to you earlier. “Are you sure you can handle that?”
Handle? Handle what? You were still confused. You opened your eyes from thought, shook your head and turned over and continued to sleep again.
From that day on, you started to dream about Youngbin. You didn’t usually have dreams of him, and you figured it was his confession that made you feel like that.
But as the weeks went on, you working and studying, and him working, you started to miss him. You’d even find yourself staring at the couch where he slept that day, for what reason you didn’t know. He hadn’t been there is weeks.
One day while you were out buying groceries you’re phone started to ring. Your stomach did somersaults when you saw Youngbin’s name and the picture you took of him laughing. His eyes were closed crescent moons and his cute little front teeth, poked out of his smile. You could hear his laugh through the picture.
You shook your head out of your daze and answered. “Uh hey.”
“What are you doing? Missing me?”
“What!?!” You jump and touch your cheeks.
“Why are you getting red? It was a joke,” you then hear the laugh you craved.
“I’m not red. Anyway how would know if I was.” You turn around away from the produce and look back at the lines where people were lying g for their food.
“Turn the other way.”
You turn back the opposite way and yelp at Youngbin suddenly next to you.
“Don’t do that!”
You hold your hand to your chest, quickly trying to catch breath and turn away from other customers watching from a afar.
“I’m sorry. But I couldn’t help myself. You were asking to be scared,” he laughs, again making more and more of your core sink. You loved his laugh, yet you hated how much you loved it.
“What are we making today?” He takes the shopping cart away from you grasp and starts to push the cart.
“Wait, I couldn’t even pick the veggies I needed!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After trudging to your apartment door with all your groceries, you and Youngbin settle on making your own ramen.
While you were working on the broth, tossing in veggies and other ingredients in, you catch Youngbin next you constantly moving his head from your peripheral.
“Do you need help?” You look over after at him after him looking over at you for the fifteenth time. You knew he was cutting the beef for the ramen, knowing that he isn’t a master chef in the kitchen. But when you looked up a him, he was just staring.
When you started to stare back he just smiles and giggles.
“Wh-What?”
You say more upset then you realized. The annoyance from wanting him had overtaken you.
“Wait what did I do?”
You toss down then spoon used to stir the broth. You hang your head down and hold onto the counter. “Y/n? What’s the matter? I don’t understand what I did.”
“You-,” you look up at him, teary-eyed. “You make me want to hug and kiss you when you smile and laugh like that.”
“Huh? And you’re upset with me about that?”
You look over to see Youngbin grinning. “It’s not funny!”
“Oh, sorry. You’re right it’s not. I’m just happy to hear you say that.” He puts the knife down to loosely wrap an arm around you to hug you.
“You know I like you.”
“Yeah I know.”
“But you know that scares me. I- don’t want to loose control.”
“But isn’t that what being in love is?”
You look up at him, tears streaming down you face. “Love isn’t just the happy cute times, it’s knowing the risks that come with it. The risk of being vulnerable.”
“But-“
“But what?” He looks down at you and giggles.
“Stop teasing me and let me talk.”
“Okay okay. I’m sorry.”
“I was saying that, I know that it’s a risk. But I love really hard. Maybe a bit too hard.”
“I’m happy to hear that.”
“What?”
“I am. Really. Because at first, I thought that I like you a lot more than you liked me. So thats comforting.”
You wipe your face as the tears stop streaming. “Why do you like me so much?” You say with a giggle.
“Because you’re genuine. And I’m sure you’re someone I could grow with.”
He looks down with a small smile. “Now, I believe that I should hear something.”
“Hear what? I just stopped crying can a get a break?”
“No,” he giggles.
“Oh yeah. I mean you already know that I like you.”
“But I want you to say it.”
“I like-“
Before you could finish you feel soft lips pressing against yours.
“Hey!” You gently push him away. “You can’t just kiss like that.”
“Why not?” He laughs again. The two of tease each other for the rest of night, with not so successfully making the ramen. All the teasjng just resulted in you guys burning it. So you ordered food from the same place you met.

Secret Santa Fic
My Secret Santa recipient is @malrunaway. They requested an Upstead or Burzek fanfiction. Hope, you enjoy it!
I chose the prompt : Trudy organizes the guest list for the 21st District Christmas Party.
Who’s Your Date?
It was a cold and windy morning like normal in Chicago, Trudy was working on some paperwork, when Jay walked into the district.
“Hey, Detective Chuckles come over here”. Jay sighed, he had not even had a cup of coffee to deal with whatever Trudy was going to ask of him.
“Yes, Sarge what can I help you with?” He said while trying to smile, but it didn’t quite reach.”
“Chuckles, you could put a little more effort into that smile, eh?” Trudy smirked
“Sorry, Sarge. I need some of this coffee.” He nodded his head in the direction of the two coffees in his hands.
“Don’t we all chuckles, don’t we all…” she mumbled looking at her empty coffee mug.
“So, what did you need, Sarge? I’m going to be late here in about five minutes.” Looking at his watch.
“I have not gotten your rsvp yet for the upcoming 21st District Holiday party. I need to know if you were planning on bringing a plus one.” She kept a straight face staring at him.
“Sarge, have I ever brought a plus one?” Looking super confused at the question.
“Chuckles, I don't keep track of your love life or lack of one, I guess.” Jay rolled his eyes, “Thanks for the reminder.”
“Fine, we can put this conversation on the back burner for now. But...it’s going to cost you.” Looking at the extra coffee he had in his hands. He sighed and looked down at it.
“Trudy, it was always meant for you, here you go.” He handed her the cup of coffee and headed up the stairs to join Intelligence.
Once, he got to his desk. He looked over and saw Hailey looking at him. She mouthed to him, “You’re late.” and Jay just whispered back looking annoyed, “You can thank, Trudy for that. Also, for your lack of coffee.” Hailey quirked her eyebrow and asked, “Do I want to know?”
“Nope. What did I miss?” Jay asked
We got a case and Sarge wants us to do some canvassing, “You ready to head out?”
“Sure.” Jay grabbed his coat and keys and they headed to his truck.
Hailey walked past Trudy's desk, staring at her coffee in Trudy’s hands. Trudy noticed and smirked and pointed the coffee in her direction. “Hey Upton, you should have told your partner to bring you one. It’s like heaven in a cup.” Jay saw Hailey about to react, when he pulled her down the stairs out of the precinct. He whispered in her ear, “I promise next stop is the coffee shop, before we canvas. Let’s go.”
------
Back from canvassing, Jay and Hailey walked into the district and Trudy called out to Hailey, “Upton, can you come here for a second?” Hailey looked at Jay confused, “Hm.. I guess it's your turn.”
“Wait, my turn for what? She turned to look at Jay, but he had already bolted up the stairs to Intelligence. She turned to face Trudy, smiled, and slowly made her way to her.
“Sarge, what can I do for you?”
“Well, someone must have stopped for coffee. I see you're in a better mood. You RSVPed for the Christmas party, but I did not see a plus one on it. I just wanted to make sure that wasn’t a mistake.” Hailey looked shocked at the question, “Um, nope. I did not forget to add a plus one. Also, my coffee was hijacked by a desk Sergeant”
“Really, who? Because I know you are not talking about me. Also, you know I have a nephew about your age. I could ask him.” Hailey was trying to keep her emotions in check throughout the conversation. “Really, I appreciate the offer. But, I’m good.”
“If you say so, well let me know if you change your mind. He’s got just as good of dance moves as myself. You definitely would not be disappointed” Trudy responded, raising her eyebrows up and down.
Hailey tries not to laugh, but it slips out a little bit. “Upton, what’s so funny?” Trudy just stared at her wanting a serious answer.
“Oh, sorry nothing. I was thinking back to when Kim and Adam started dancing on the bar at last year's party.” Hailey really hoped that Trudy would buy it and make her escape for the stairs.
“Nice try, Upton. Don’t ask for my help next time.” Hailey was about to respond back, "But, Sarge…" Trudy just kept blankly staring at her. She quickly pulled her cell phone out, “Oh, text from Jay, sorry Sarge, they need me upstairs.” She retreated to the stairs and headed up.
Trudy called after her, “Upton! I didn’t hear that phone go off.” But Hailey was long gone.
----
Hailey walked back up to Intelligence and headed to her desk and sat down. Jay was about to ask her how that conversation went when Kim walked up to Hailey.
“Hey, Hailey. Got a second? Coffee?” Hailey shot Jay a quick smile and followed Kim to the break room. Once inside, Kim shut the door.
Hailey looked confusedly at Kim. Kim went over the coffee maker to grab herself a cup. “So, are you excited for the Christmas party coming up?”
“Um, yeah I guess.” Hailey answered not sure where this conversation was going after the one downstairs. She had her guard up.
“I’m excited to be going this year with Adam. At least if we end up dancing on the bar together this year, it won’t be so weird… They both started to laugh thinking back to that scenario, where Adam ended up shirtless on that bar top.
“Do you have a date for the party?” Kim asked curiously while sipping her cup of coffee.
Hailey was in the middle of drinking her coffee when Kim asked and almost choked on it.
“Sorry, are you and Trudy working together on something here?” Kim looked at her shocked, not expecting that answer. “Um...no? I was just trying to have some girl talk, but if it's a touchy subject we don’t have to talk about it.” Hailey sighed, “No, of course not. Let’s just say it was just brought up by Trudy downstairs. Kim chuckled and completely could picture that conversation. “So… How did that go?” she asked.
“Kim, she was trying to set me up with her nephew!” Hailey replied and Kim just started laughing. Suddenly there was a knock on the break room door. Kim walked over to open it and behold, Trudy was standing there, looking annoyed.
“Ladies, do I need to remind you that those vents carry conversations.” She said while pointing at the wall.
Hailey and Kim just stood there speechless, and finally responded in unison, “Sorry, Sarge.” Trudy just huffed and stomped back down the stairs to her desk.
---
When Hailey and Kim came out of the breakroom. The guys were staring at them.
Adam asked, “What did you do to Trudy? Like what damage control is needed? I do not want to work any patrols shifts coming up." Jay and Kevin stood next to him nodding in agreeance.
Kim and Hailey looked at each other and Kim responded to the guys, “It’s a girl thing. Don’t worry about it?”
“Don’t worry, you gals know when Trudy is not happy, all of the 21st District is not happy. That's no bueno,” Kevin replied before Adam could say anymore. Hailey looked nervous and was quiet. Jay has been watching Hailey this whole time trying to read her.
“Hailey, what happened?” Jay asked.
Hailey quietly responded back, “Trudy was trying to set me up with her nephew for the Christmas party.”
Jay looked shocked and Adam replied, “Wait, what? You are going to have to repeat that a bit louder, I don’t think I heard that correctly.”
Hailey glared at him, “You heard me. I may have laughed slightly at her downstairs due to a dancing moves comment and then she heard me up here talking to Kim. “Those, damn, vents.” She mumbled.
Adam walked over to Hailey and put his hand on her shoulder, “Hm, well I think the only way you're going to be able to fix this is actually going on that date.” Kevin standing back nodded, “Sorry Hailey, I’m going to have to agree with Adam here. You're going to have to take one for the team.”
“Absolutely not!” She said loudly and then quickly quieted down and finished, to avoid another Trudy sighting, “I am not going on a date with her nephew…” Hailey, the whole time, tried to avoid looking at Jay.
“What it’s not like you had an actual date to the party, Hailey. Just do it.” Adam replied.
“Now, just because she does not have a date, does not give you guys the right to tell her what she has to do.” Kim replied trying to help Hailey out.
All of the sudden they heard a loud bang and heard Trudy yelling at some patrolman downstairs. Kim looked back at Hailey, “I love you girl, but I cannot deal with that the rest of the week. It’s only Monday.”
Hailey was speechless, she looked at her at the group of co-workers, and just threw her hands up in the air and walked to the locker room. She could not believe they were suggesting the only way to fix this was for her to go on a date with Trudy's nephew. Also, she could not believe that Trudy was taking it so personal, but again Trudy was protective over people she loved. Hailey knew that from many life-death scenarios they had all gone through in her years at the 21st.
“Bro, you need to go talk some sense into your partner.” Kevin told Jay. Jay slowly made his way down the hall following Hailey to the locker room.
--
Jay closed the locker room door behind him, and approached Hailey, who was sitting on the bench by her locker. Before he could say anything she noticed him and immediately started talking, “Can you believe them? I am not going on a date with her nephew.” She stood up and was pacing while explaining to Jay.
“Maybe, it’s time we tell them about “us.” He replied quietly. “It would definitely get Trudy off both our backs.” Hailey stopped in her tracks and turned around to face him.
“Wait, that’s why you were late this morning and without coffee? Didn't she have any nieces for you?” She asked.
Jay just shrugged his shoulders and smiled back, “Lucky me?” Hailey playfully swatted her arms at his chest. All of a sudden Jay noticed Hailey's facial expression change. She replied, “If we are going to decide to let them know about “us,” I think we should have some fun messing with them all first.”
“What did you have in mind?” Jay asked very curiously wondering where this was going to go. He definitely did not think it was going to be this easy to convince Hailey to come clean to the group.
“You are going to tell the group out there,” pointing out to the hall, “That, I went to talk to Sarge to fix it. We are all good.” Jay listened and asked, “What are you going to tell Sarge?”
“A really good friend reached out and now I have a date for the Christmas work party. So, I can’t go with her nephew, and apologize.” She shrugged her shoulders, making it sound so simple.
“Oh, a really good friend, huh? Jay said teasingly, “Does he happen to have a name?”
“I will call him, Jacob.” She slipped her arms around his waist and looked up and smiled at him.
“Think we can pull it off?” She asked. “I do.” He kissed her quickly before someone walked in, they separated and went off to handle their tasks individually. They had managed to pull off their little white lie that day. Hailey definitely did have a date, and no his name was not Jacob. It was Jay.
----
It was finally the night of the work party. Hailey and Jay decided to show up a little late, so that everyone would be there before they arrived.
At the party, the group of them were all talking. Trudy said, “So, apparently Upton has a date tonight?” The rest of the group looked at Trudy smiling. Kim replied, “I cannot wait to meet your nephew!” Trudy had just grabbed an appetizer of the plate from the waitress and dropped it on the floor. “Damn it, Burgess, my snack! Also, what do you mean my nephew? She isn’t coming with my nephew.”
The group all exclaimed, “Wait, what? Jay said, she was going down to talk to you and make things right." Kim commented.
“Goldilocks told me she has a date with a good friend named Jacob”, Trudy responded.
Kevin responded, “She never mentioned Jacob, did she?" Looking at Adam and Kim.
They responded in unison shaking their heads no.
Trudy was about to say something, then she stopped dead in her tracks staring at the front door. Kim asked, “Sarge, are you ok?”
“Turn around, Burgess. I think we all have been played like a little violin.”
“What are you talking about, Sarge? Kim asked. Trudy grabbed Kim's shoulders and turned her around pointing at the front door.
There stood Jay and Hailey at the front door, holding hands. The two of them saw the reactions from their team. Hailey smirked and just before she turned Jay, to lead him toward the bar, he sent a wink to the group.
“Well, damn we definitely got played.” Adam said.
Right at that moment, Voight walked by looking at the group and back at Jay and Hailey, “Wait, you guys didn’t know? You better start studying for the detective exam now. Because that was way easier to figure out, than any of the questions will ever be."
