School rant, sorry its kinda rambly. TW for school shootings, bomb threats, the whole Apalachee High situation.

Nothing like last week's news to make me so, so glad I’m not in a classroom anymore.

I taught in Georgia and South Carolina for 13 years. Even did an observation at Apalachee during grad school, since it was a relatively quick drive from Athens/UGA - you know, back in the distant past of 15 years ago when teacher training had actual rigor and requirements in this part of the country. I even taught at the psychoeducational alternative school that Barrow county bussed their most extreme EBD kids to. So yeah, this hit close to home for me.

My financial situation basically changed overnight last year, when Dr. Mr. Camucia finally finished his fellowship and became a full-fledged attending. This let me quit my job right in time for South Carolina to implement its policy where teachers would have to submit every. single. thing. that would be used throughout the year. Every book, website, lesson plan, PowerPoint - all would have to be submitted within the first two weeks for administration to approve, and parents would have the right to veto or challenge anything they want. You know, in addition to the million other things teachers already do, and crap I had to do handling the yearbook.

(You can only imagine what a policy like this would be like for me, teaching a class called Media Art where both teaching Photoshop and media literacy/criticism were in my standards 🙃)

But things, particularly where I was teaching, were already Bad. And, in fact, getting Worse. This was a school where we already had an entire year of bomb threats well before Covid (including one with an actual failed bomb! My fanfic Footnotes was borne of the insanity of that year!) - that basically showed the exact protocol of what happens when something like this happens at a school. We did all the things everyone claims would stop this sort of thing -

-They added metal detectors (which basically flagged almost everyone, causing 1st period to basically lose 20 minutes a day since so many kids had to get wanded down every morning). They gave up on those after about a week.

-They added more cops, more cameras, sealed off more doors, did all the things, but the bomb threats, kids bringing in weapons, etc. just kept happening.

-They even (years later) added a security system very similar to the one at Apalachee - except, oh, wait - my classroom, and like six others were just… not hooked up to the system. They took my old school panic button, said they’d fix it "later" and give me one of them fancy lanyards with the panic switch, and that just never happened. Three of the classrooms didn’t even have the fire alarm work for their room! They straight up missed fire drills!

My last year there, there was a huge fight in the cafeteria. Like the kind that makes the news, not the kind that happen almost every day that just get posted to tiktok or whatever (I was on bus line afternoon duty, and frequently had kids compliment me on how bored I’d look breaking up those kinds of fights).

But this was a 10 or so person brawl that ended up with multiple student injuries, blood all over the floor, a whole school lockdown, and a teacher breaking their leg trying to hold back the crowd watching/recording/cheering it on. I taught two of the main participants - they were suspended, then "expelled," then mysteriously just showed back up a month later after some sort of appeal to the board of ed. I was told to let them make up any work they missed during their month off, which they both referred to like it was a vacation (would it surprise anyone to know these were football players?).

This isn’t isolated. Ask almost any teacher and they’ll have multiple accounts of kids just… not facing consequences when they get written up, or not caring about parent calls (because the parent doesn’t care either), or seeing ISS and OSS as vacations since they just get to sleep and play with their phones. I don’t think people who haven’t been in a school realize just what it’s like now. And I don’t know what the environment was like at Apalachee, but I know that the facility where the most troubled kids for that specific part of Georgia was shut down last year - I know this because I worked there.

Apparently all of the GNETS (Georgia Network of Educational and Therapeutic and Support) schools in Georgia were shut down last year for having these kids not mainstreamed enough. I can say from having worked there as an art teacher that the system was not perfect, but that these kids did not belong in a mainstream classroom. I was stabbed, kicked, spat on, had literal shit thrown at me - and I was one of the better liked teachers! But at least there were smaller class sizes and much better ratios of social workers and psychologists working with the kids and their families. We had access to resources that regular public schools are just stretched too thin to pursue, things like getting families off the street, clothes and food for students' whole families, etc. So these kids were just sent back to their home schools for their presumably already overwhelmed regular Special Ed departments to deal with.

Apparently in Barrow County, where Apalachee is, all of the kids who were at the alternative school are sent to just one school per level, plus taking on additional kids from other, smaller counties in the area. I’m sure caseload numbers went way up, and the behaviors being dealt with got a whole lot more extreme in just one semester.

This kid should have had so many red flags. There already were, according to the FBI! But as far as schools, there should have been a dozen counselors, administrators, etc. who had worked on a fat ol BIP (behavior intervention plan) about this kid that every teacher got before he even stepped foot into their classroom. It’s not uncommon to get kids where you know for a damn fact you’re not supposed to let them go to the bathroom unaccompanied, or have to check in with guidance every morning, or who have to get their backpack searched every morning (or aren’t allowed to have a backpack at all! I had a few of those!). But that apparently just… didn’t happen.

So, yeah. Every part of this whole situation has just made my skin crawl. Those kids and those teachers should be alive. Those kids who got shot and will be traumatized for life should have never had that happen to them. The cult of gun worship in this country is sickening, and the more we gut public education, the more teachers will just throw their hands up and give up like I did - this isn’t going to get better without drastic, dramatic change. And I really just don’t see it happening in this country.

I miss teaching. I miss my kids. I was, by all accounts, pretty damn good at it. But with things the way they are, and the sheer insane number of things we expect teachers to be able to do while also blaming them for everything, I'm not going back.

Hi, Moon! Let's play Fanfic Writer: Director's Cut game, shall we? OKAY, the thing is, I could just smashed "give me a whole analysis on your story", but I respect your time, so let's start with VBEOW: - The bridge scenes, all of them, with Aruani and the refugess - Big shoes, small shoes (I have a hunch that, maybe, it doesn't include only Aruani, but other double A's as well...) - The Wings of Freedom seal - The choice of plants for PokoPiku lovestory - Aoife- Annie moment in chapter 8

Anna 🙃 you certainly remember more than I do of what even goes on in this fic 🙃🙃🙃 I'm also so very sorry, I... this is very long....

1. The Bridge Scenes.

So far, there have been... Two. First when we saw Armin and Annie "cross" it (because technically they didn't fully cross it) early in the morning, and then again when they go across to the refugee settlement and Armin gives that fancy speech and helps our poor fear-worn refugees cross it.

The lake in this village in Kald is inspired by Lake Brienz in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Ever since I first saw it, I wanted to put AA in this setting in a fic someday. And when I started writing again, VBEOW was my setting to do that. The bridge however, was not planned. I wanted a village on this side of the lake, and some cottages on that side, simply for scenic purposes, and it wasn't until Annie went on her first solo morning walk, that the bridge happened. Same with the settlement cottages.

Eventually however, this gave me an opportunity to do several things:

1. Separate the AA and the other four physically, from the Ft.Salta refugees and the warriors' parents. This would give them the space and liberty to live their new lives on their own, together, while also being able to freely visit their parents (who belonged to their past, a terrible past). Basically, new life -------(bridge)------- old life.

2. Provide an opporutnity to "bridge" the gap between the liberio refugees, and the host of issues they come with. What issues? Two. One, their hatred toward the Eldians on Paradis (surely there are many who thought like Eren's grandpa, OG Jaeger). This one was pretty much "resolved to a great extent" in TFLM with that train pulling scene and I didn't want to go into it again. Second however, is their generational trauma. The Liberio Eldians faced a horrifying confinement brutally enforced on them by the Marleyans and like Grisha's sister was fed to the dogs for leaving the internment zone without a permit, I'm sure other families faced the same horrors. When you're terrorized like that, you don't try to leave when you're put in a box. By physically placing the refugees on the opposite side of the lake, in a set of abandoned cottages, away from the village and general populace of native Kaldians, it's like another confinement. An opportunity to get them to rise over it. But this can be done only by...

3. Developing Armin's character enough, to be able to do this. So one of the many great things Erwin did was recognizing Armin's brilliance and potential and giving him a boost despite being a green recruit. But we never got to see him gradually grow into that leadership and position of command thanks to Eren's genocidal ass, instead we have that post-timeskip shot in 139 where he looks a great deal more confident and sure about himself,.... but I believe it would've been an absolute treat to see him grow bit by bit into this state. And I wanted VBEOW to be a fic where I could make that happen. Using his empathetic and understanding approach, Armin drew a line that had to be crossed on the middle of the bridge - (we'll get to why the middle in the next point), forcing them to "want" to "cross the physical barrier" that's a 2D chalk line. Without a line, it's just a bridge they're scared of crossing. With the line, it becomes more, by stepping over it each time, they're reminding themselves that they're free now, they can cross any line and any border in the world. They're equals, and they're nothing less. The Boy who Saw Hope, gathering enough confidence to do this, cementing himself as a very different kind of world leader (one that doesn't just seek power and glory), and also, becoming more confident with himself.

4. In the context of AA alone, the bridge is... the middle. The meeting point between two worlds. A paradisian. A marleyan. Both Eldians (well, annie is half), separated by walls and told to kill the other. Despite it all, they always gravitated toward each other and now, they're at the very middle and center. Also a symbolic way of saying that they crossed the "borders" long ago when they fell in love :3 Armin sees this (and also realizes how he can use it for the refugees later on) and emotional, kisses her there. Bec he's a sap. And corny.

2. Big Shoes, Small Shoes.

While I usually look up symbolism on the internet, I didn't do this for shoes. Shoes in VBEOW represent many things - the desire to travel and go places, the crossing of great distances... and so on. Shoes are also the first things you see when you come home. In a proper "home" you're going to find them lying haphazard and messy, strewn here and there carelessly, arranged in a row together. It's a sign of people being home, family being home. It's a sign of home. And Annie and Armin, are each other's home, and they're also building a place they can call home. So when Annie shoves her shoes close to Armin's, it's her desire to build a place just for herself and him, although maybe subconsciously still, she's seeing it happen and she wants it. She likes it and she's safe and happy in a house with him where no more terrors and battles wait to be fought. It's a sign of peace and quiet she's always wanted. This plot isn't over tho, and you'll see this specific scene happen again xD

But the shoes are also for the OTHER AA in this story, namely the little kids Asa and Aoife. So, written to simply be parallels to Aruani's lives, they have grown their own lives now and I no longer can keep them as "just" mirror images of Aruani's pasts. Armin puts himself in Asa's little shoes to help him grow, to be the sort of person he wished he'd had in his own life. Annie... is also faced with this dilemma currently and we'll see what she does.

3. Wings of Freedom Seal.

So first of all, I'm weirdly attached to this symbol xD Ever since I first saw it... I wanted it xD I loved it xD I bought so MANY tshirts with it printed on them lmao. ANyways.

So remember how BIG of a deal the SC was back in S1-3? And in S4 we've got so much of shit thrown at us that the significance of the SC fades into the background, brought back in that one (or two) episode(s) where Hange gathers everyone around the fire to share her potato stew. There, we know that the Alliance opposes Eren's genocide because of what the SC always believed in. Freedom for mankind as a whole. Between's Erwin's charisma, Hange's curiosity and Armin's dreams, Armin seemed to me always the one best suited to wear the wings on his back. Simply because for him, Freedom is the beauty of life, the beauty of discovery and learning and exploration. So while we have them wearing suits and looking amazing as "Ambassadors" in 139, I kinda... wanted them to carry the Wings proudly throughout the 3 year timeskip. After all, all of them except for Pieck, were part of the 104th. Except Annie, the rest all belonged to the SC. And Annie would've joined the SC if not for her mission, I feel. In the end, they were brought together by the same ideals, the ideal held proud and high by the Wings of Freedom. Giving it to Armin as a seal was... like... giving him the power to wield it in his future efforts as a world leader.

4. Pieck, Porco and the Plants.

So there's no argument that the warriors had terrible lives. They were bred to be war weapons and had their life spans shortened to 13 years. Above all that, despite fighting Marley's dirty wars, they were still treated horribly, looked upon as devils and scum for being Eldian in the first place and well, seen as shit. In comparison, the Paradisians had better lives, they were at least equal and happier within their walls. Now. I won't get into Pokopiku here, but with that kind of life, love is... Depressing. There's no future together. There's no guarantee of a tomorrow. One of them could be severely damaged in a explosion or whatever and that'd be the end of them. Still, they made the most of their time, and tried in those little pockets of time alone, not to feel like the warriors they'd been told to be.

To be human is also to take care of things. To take care of life. Plants, are life. Plants symbolise life in their growth, in their colour, in the care needed to help them survive. Plants are harmless and if you care for them, it's kinda like taking care of your own children. Pokopiku here dreamed of this one day, where they'd live in a house covered head to toe with plants, taking care of them, taking care of life, living life for once, and enjoying it, free of worries and responsibilities. It was also their desire to be with each other, dreamed of in secret, special only because they thought of it when they were alone together. With Porco gone and her dream achieved, albeit without him, the plants in Pieck's room are Porco himself. And they'll stay, because he's part of her and always will be.

I have to mention tho, none of the plants in Pieck's room are flowering plants. None. That's important.

5. Aoife-Annie, Ch 8.

XD this one is like asking for spoilers since we haven't resolved this issue. But it won't be resolved for a long time really... Well... In a... Certain way... Okay i can't say more xD

But Aoife is Annie's younger self, brought up with bruises and pain, in different circumstances. We'll obviously go into those circumstances and why she is the way she is later on, and we'll see why she constantly says "I fall" (tho I think it's a little obvious but still), why she told Annie "nothing bad happens in Kald" the first time they met, and why she's arguably, quicker to open up to Annie than Annie possibly might've been, at the age of 10 herself. For Aoife, Annie is a bright lighthouse, a strong girl who's just told her she's been beaten like Aoife, but who remains strong and brave nevertheless. As to why Annie's the only one who she sees as a sign of hope.. we'll find out that too later on. But yeah. She latches onto that the very minute she hears it and begs her to teach her to fight. Because what could be better than to be strong like Annie? Like this girl, so fierce yet caring, who'd wrapped a bandage around her burns, paid enough attention to her to notice them in the first place, and accepted her company and gifts of sweets?

As for Annie... She's trying to live a new life, putting memories of her past behind her. Memories of being trained to fight wars she didn't care about, and memories of before that, when she was abused by her father. She finds herself in an extremely dangerous situation (for her) where agreeing to help this girl will take her back to those times and days. The ring on her finger symbolises all the death she's caused and it came from fighting in the first place... Why would she willingly go back there? She's wanted nothing but peace and quiet and a life away from fighting - now that it's in her hands, she wants to stay put. It's also the recurring fear of feeling like she'll be white washing her crimes (or trying to atleast) with this one act of kindness, because to help is to give hope, to the other person and to oneself. And Annie doesn't want to give herself any hope that she's guilt free. While she believed she cared about nothing except her dad, we know she cared a great deal about much more. She does have guilt, and she carries it heavily.

Oh my gosh!!!!!! I didn’t know you had personal beef with chocorooms 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that’s amazing tho. I think the bamboo ones would be good too (*), and the chocorooms satisfy an old ‘I want to eat the mushrooms from Star Fox Adventures’ urge, lol, but I think the hello pandas are my favorite of the two. AC Chocolate Headcanons!

I agree that Desmond would like most sweets and would be open to eating any and every sweet he sees. Honestly, I see Desmond preferring something with a burst of flavor and texture like Reese, like you said. I also like to think he likes packs with a variety of flavors like Skittles or Nerds (the duo pack or the rainbow ones)

Altaïr feels like someone who prefers something less sweet and more... not dark, just less sweet? Like Dairy Milk Salted Caramel maybe? Or something like Kitkat or Mars or Snickers. Something that is less chocolate and more chocolate-coated wafer.

Ezio would enjoy giving people those chocolates that has booze in them, just for fun. He'll try any chocolate and he says he doesn't have a favorite but his favorite would be something he can share with people like Toblerone or Pocky because he grew up with siblings and it's better to share snacks than try to eat everything before they get it. ============ AC Manga/Comics ============

I actually only have one AC comics at the moment. With all the AC merchs available, I had to prioritize because... money is finite. Anyway, I prioritized on any and all artbooks + cheap 2nd hand guides for the Desmond Saga 'cause I like artbooks.

BUT I do have the Reflections comics and I think it's nice. There are different versions, but this one (Amazon link) have all four volumes. It's like a mini-story with each volume focus on a different ancestor:

Ezio's volume is about how he knew the model for Mona Lisa

Altaïr's volume is how Darim assassinated Genghis Khan together with the Mongolian Brotherhood

Connor's volume is about his daughter who is so precious

and Edward's volume is about his ship getting boarded while he was underwater

Personally, I think it's worth it if you like any of the ancestors.

I personally like Connor's volume because, again, his daughter is adorable af and she can connect to her eagle like the protagonists of Layla's Trilogy.

I do love Altaïr's volume because I'm a sucker for the Ibn-La'Ahad boys and look at how cool Darim is:

The manga I only know of is mainly the Shao Jun mangas? I don't have that though so I can't know how canonically it is. The other comics usually focus on non-AC game protagonist characters and I can't say anything about them because I haven't read them. One of them does include how Juno dies though XD

heeseung: if i’m being honest, heeseung himself has struggled with hate for his looks (especially ever since he I think took out something from his nose. idk if it’s true or what. it was after blessed-cursed era when they had to perform it on some ski resort). he knows how it feels to look in the mirror and scan through your whole body. as your boyfriend, heeseung can’t help but feel sad that you ever thought of hating yourself. he wishes that he could show you, how you looked in his eyes. he tries showing you that you are worth everything. if you ever thought of possibly starving yourself/going on a diet, he can’t help but hold you close and mutter sweet nothings into your ear. something like “you don’t need to, you’re already perfect enough.”

jay: oh lord, everytime I think about jay…i just wanna cry. jay himself has always expressed his thoughts out loud. he even recently mentioned (in a jaywon live) how he is worried about getting thinner due to stress. he tries to build up more. so to think you could ever dislike yourself, jay can’t help but feel mad. well not on you just a little on your negative mentality. idk how to describe it, hopefully you get what I mean. to him, he understands it’s hard to learn to love yourself. hence every chance he gets, he will always get you something and cheer you on. “that dress looks amazing on you.” “only wear it for me. it’s only for my eyes.” before he leaves a peck on your forehead. (yes, even if you wear just a normal t-shirt, this mf will insist it’s only for his eyes)

jake: YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I WOULD LITERALLY PAY TO HAVE JAKE COMFORT ME💔 jake is sooooo smooth with his words and actions. considering, how jake himself has always been friendly and sweet. it’s easy for him to comfort you with his best words. he takes it a step further by always making sure you don’t feel uncomfortable. he knows you struggle with your body image so whenever there is an event that requires you to look fancy, he will make sure to give you compliments every now and then. actually scratch that, he does that everyday even if you don’t go to some fancy event. “you look amazing sweetheart.” “that’s my girl. she’s looking so fine.”

sunghoon: i feel like for sunghoon…he wouldn’t exactly know how to act. it’s a little awkward for him to comfort someone. just like me. I find it hard comfort someone even when I wanna comfort someone. but sunghoon tries his best to comfort you. just like jay, he will attempt to gift things rather than showing to you that you are worth everything. he will also try his best to talk about it but he finds it hard to find form words so he doesn’t accidentally hurt you. give him time, he needs it. “you look extremely beautiful.” “I just don’t understand how you could hate yourself?” “I mean i’m handsome so like if you can catch my attention, what will other boys think about you?” his own way to comfort you but hey at least he makes you laugh and smile from it.

sunoo: okay so for sunoo, we all know the situation that happened with him. he understands you too. the both of you needed time to heal yourselves from this. with the help of the boys, sunoo manages to realise that he didn’t need to care about how people thought about him. he could do whatever he wants and people couldn’t control what he intends to do with his body. while sunoo healed, your mental health just became worse. every time you stared into the mirror, negative thoughts would surround you. sunoo knows, he takes every step to pull you away from the mirror. he would always pull you into a hug and tell you how amazing you are for being so strong to face the challenges everyday. gradually, he will make a time for you look at yourself in the mirror. he will always be by your side to point out all the things he loved about you. “this? mine to kiss.” he points to your cheeks. “this one, is a 10/10 place to lay on.” wraps his arms around your tummy.

jungwon: i believe jungwon’s love language is words of affirmation. much like jake. he constantly reminds you that you are amazing and loved. however, it didn’t exactly help you so he then the physical actions comes in. he always reminds himself that he needed to show you some love every once in a while. it could be pecks, cheek kisses, forehead kisses and small hand rubs. he knows you struggle with insecurities so he will always settle you down to let you talk it out and if you need to, cry it out. he always wipes your tears. “thank you for letting me listen to your worries (name).” “but just know…I will never leave you. even if you are a terrifying monster. ni-ki: people will say “oh he is young, surely he will tease you for it and then make fun of you.” pause☝️ i’m sorry but as much as he is young. you have to realise he is also forced to grow up since he is an idol now. he left japan alone without his parents to pursue his dreams. moreover, you can’t judge anything based off what we see on camera. Like get this you cuddle then you kiss them, maybe u guys get it one few times 👀 but neither one ever talks about it afterwards cause they don’t want to be the one to cement it or!!! Or! Izuku is def the one where he probs overheard about your commitment issues so his brillliant plan is to just never bring up the relationship even though both of you are clearly dating. He will gladly do all the pinning-pleaseeee ugh. Him coming over to your apartment almost everyday (gotta bring takeout with him too-less of a chance of being told to go home💀) and eventually you just expect him to be there and when he’s not you’ll text him like ‘ when you coming home’ and he melts cause you’re telling him to come home☹️🫶🏽 little sappy bitch. The first time you guys fall asleep in the same bed and waking up tangled together and him apologizing over and over cause shoot did he overstep??? But your like “ I love cuddles 🙄 chill dumbass” and that’s basically his green light to just become a teddy bear every time he stays over( which is a lot) -maybe one day y’all are out together shopping for groceries (Jesus just move in together guys🙄) and some of his friends show up and are like omg I didn’t know you had a girlfriend!!!
