Thoughts on The Outsiders Album

Okay, as I said yesterday, I have a LOT of thoughts on the album and I decided to revive this page so I stop bothering everyone IRL with my thoughts about it 😂 I figure there must be a good amount of people on tumblr who are down to listen to my rants about the album, so here goes.

I'll put it under a cut so there aren't any spoilers for anyone who hasn't listened yet, and I know there's one or two things which I've heard about the prouction via other posts and such. But I will stress that I haven't actually seen it, I've only listened to the album and obsessed over it 😂

It's also below the cut because it's fucking LOOOOONG

Please reply to this or send in your own thoughts - I have so much I want to talk about to do with this album and I'm like... shaking with the need to talk about it with people who actually want to listen 😂

I'm gonna go through the album sequentially, like track by track, because that feels like the thing to do, even though I will say right off that I definitely have more thoughts about some tracks than others. And I will also give my favourite line from each song. But for a just, like, general overview to begin with - I love the album so much?

I will fully admit that I was kinda preparing myself for it to be bad - it's a book that I love and I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie adaptation for a few key reasons, but I was so pleasantly surprised by the musical soundtrack.

I'm in love with the style of music, I love the entire cast (all of them have such different singing voices and styles and I think that they merge together so beautifully), and it has most of the things that I love in a musical - for me, it's got the right balance of the talking sections included with the singing, as well, which I know some people aren't huge fans of, but I might be biased because Soda is and always has been my favourite character and most of the talking is by him 😂 (I love Jason Schmidt, but we'll talk about that later), and as well as that the style of music and singing like gives me a good picture of what the actual choreography might look like, which I'm obsessed with, since I probably won't get to see it unless it somehow gets to the West End (🤞🏻)

Tulsa '67

Okay so this song is just like ✨exposition ✨ but it's done in a fun way, and I've decided it's worth it just for the finale reprise

I was also like stupidly emotional the first time I heard it and it opened with the opening line of the book

I was wary because of the immediate characterisation of Sodapop as being the brother "with a broken heart" (side note - does this mean Sandy broke his heart before the show rather than after it? I've goes QUESTIONS) - I'll go into it again when we get into Grease Got a Hold for obvious reasons, but I was worried that Soda was gonna be reduced into just being a womaniser again, which is something that bothered me about the movie adaptation

Favourite line: "all the girls are pretty there, and all the guys are mean"

Grease Got a Hold

right so it has no right to be as much of a bop as it is, it's been stuck in my head for the past week since it came out and I can't even be mad about it 😂

It's essentially just a typical "gang" song to introduce and characterise all the different members

Dally always saying "Little brother" got me so emotional like immediately

And I know I just said that I was upset with Soda's characterisation as a womaniser, but considering later songs, I will say I do find it really funny that he basically just goes "yeah I'm a greaser bc I love women 😊"

I LOVE TWO-BIT MATTHEWS - I would die for Daryl Tofa, just something soooooo good about the line he gives after Soda's verse

I have to admit, I was a little worried that they were gonna be pushing some anti-Darry propaganda, but I had no cause to worry, as he's an actual angel. Also it's so funny how fucking Done he is the moment he starts speaking

Something really funny about Steve not getting a verse, but something really sad about Johnny not getting one, but I don't have fully fleshed out thoughts yet so I'm gonna leave that there

But also there's just something about all of them trying to act tough, but all of them just have the voices of angels

Favourite line: "I'm a latch-key kid but they keep changing the locks" and also "you wanna be a fighter? then know just what you're fighting for"

Runs in the Family

I'm upset because this song has been such an ear-worm for me, but it's actually just so sad? There are a couple of these, but this is one of the main ones for me

It immediately makes Darry just such a sympathetic character - it's well documented that Ponyboy doesn't feel like he's enough of a greaser, but I don't think we talk enough about Darry is a reluctant greaser

Side note: but I'm really glad that they included Darry having dropped out of school to look after Soda and Pony, because that was kinda glossed over in the movie, which I felt did Darry a disservice

I just want to hug Brent Comer and tell Darry that he's doing a good job and everything will be okay 🥲

Favourite line: "I don't know what them boys would ever do without me - and what would I do on my own?"

Great Expectations

honestly this song deserves a post all of it's own, and maybe one day I'll do a full analysis of it

but in the meantime, it's fucking GORGEOUS, like Brody Grant has NO RIGHT to sound like this I'm so mad

THE FUCKING HARMONIES I WANNA SCREAM THEY'RE SO GOOD

One of the things I've loved about the soundtrack in general is how Pony in particular draws parallels and comparrisons between Johnny and the other greasers - here it's between Darry and Johnny, and I love it because Pony references in the book that he feels like he and Johnny are the outsiders in the greasers, he feels like neither of them really belong there, and they convey that so well in the musical with these constant comparisons in the songs and music

The continual return back to this idea of a self-fulfilling prophechy - trying to prove that they're not all the same just because they're greasers (like with the different verses in Grease Got a Hold), and this striving for individuality despite the overarching label they've been given

Favourite line: "It's hard to write this story, when this story's writing me"

Friday at the Drive-in

they all just sound so young - that's my main take-away from this song

I love songs in musicals like this where you're forced to be reminded how young the characters are and you have to humanise them a bit more - a bit like with "Drink with Me" in Les Mis

Also anytime that a soundtrack includes the dance-break it makes me so happy 🥲

Favourite Line: "Got no more stress, nothing to worry me - no more teacher's pet or trigonometry"

I Could Talk to You All Night

I need to say that I love this song, but the opening from Cherry is so fucking savage - like fucking hell there's no need to do that to Pony 😂

Again obsessed with Pony not feeling like enough of a Greaser

I'm a sucker for two people who feel lost in their own worlds finding each other and bonding because they can be themselves in a way that they can never be around their other friends

It's just such a pretty duet, and I want more of Brody Grant and Emma Pittman singing - we could have a million songs of the two of them and it wouldn't be enough

Favourite line: "I'd rather read then fight a rumble, but Greasers have to go along"

Runs in the Family (Reprise)

Dude it's such a serious song, and I'm obsessed that despite that there's just Soda being a little shit in the background

"I'll fold your laundry - I'LL FOLD ALL OF IT"

I love that even in this song it's like you can tell he's just so worried about Pony but it's coming out so angry and frustrated

So full of grief for the life he almost had

He's just so angry at Pony for still being able to dream, and it's like he feels like he needs to prepare Pony for real life, because he feels like he can't dream or wish for things anymore

And then just the screeching violin at the end of the song followed by DEAD FUCKING SILENCE, and then it switches to the next song where Pony starts singing acapella it's just herugighadlsiughukdhjsak, y'know?

Favourite line: "Whats the use in dreaming, about a life I'll never know? That ship sailed long ago"

Far Away from Tulsa

okay so I've already said that I'm obsessed with it beginning with Brody Grant acapella, and I know that the songs probably don't flow straight from one to the other in the actual production, but for the sake of the cast recording the effect is incredible

But also, there was absolutely no need to make this song so gay 😂 - Ponyboy, the bisexual icon we all need

It's very reminiscent of Santa Fe, with just kids dreaming for a life that they could have outside of their big city. Especially with the line "this place is real, it's not just in my head", which is VERY similar to "just be real is all I'm asking, not some painting in my head", but I'm okay with it because Brody Grant is incredible

But that line, as well as the one "'Ponyboy you're just a dreamer', that's what both my brothers say" are also really great links back to the previous song with the references of him being a dreamer, and that being what sets him apart from the other Greasers

I also just wanna say that I think it's criminal that there weren't more Pony/Johnny duets. Sky Lakota-Lynch and Brody Grant own my soul

Also catch me being emotional over Johnny's dream being wanting a family - he doesn't realise that he's already got one in the gang 🥺 (I could write an essay about this and Dally's continued use of 'little brother')

OKAY ALSO OBSESSED WITH THE CIRCLE BACK TO GREAT EXPECTATIONS, AND WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT HOW THE LYRICS CHANGE FROM

GOTTA ESCAPE TULSA TO ESCAPE THEIR FATE, SOMETHING AGAIN ABOUT SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES, I JUST CAN'T

Favourite line: "I'm tired of blindly watching as we're inching towards the ground"

Run Run Brother

There's so much to say about this song, but I literally can't formulate the words, so it's probably gonna be one that I come back to and properly analyse later. so in the meantime, here are my key take-aways

right from the beginning, it gives just an "oh-shit" feeling, just so much urgency and desperation

All three of them have such different singing voices and styles and the combination of the three just makes me so happy and I don't even know how to like express what I'm feeling

Back to the thing about Dally always calling Johnny (and Pony, but we're emotional about Johnny here) "brother"

the music is just so fitting - I feel like I need to be up and moving every time I hear it, like if I ran ever this would be on the playlist 😂

And I'm going insane over the echoes of what has been previously been said - the "grease isn't given it's something you earn", and "let's leave this behind, let's just get up and go" like you're FORCED to face that they are being given what they want but in a really terrible way

Favourite line: "I hate to make you go, but there ain't no other way"

Justice for Tulsa

okay so I know that this is a really important song and everything, but I will admit this is the one I tend to skip most

I will say I think this song would hit harder if they kept with the themes of police brutality that there are in the novel and movie with regards to Dally's death (going off what I've heard about the script changes from people who have seen it, I can't verify myself)

The song feels very claustrophobic, with everyone just trying to blame everyone else, which I think is really well done. Especially with the multiple voices coming in with "you know just what you did"

And it does show the bias of the world trying to blame the Greasers just by reputation alone, which is thematically nice

and also just the kinda mob mentality of the whole thing, especially at the end, with a declaration of war

Favourite line: "or we could send them back a message, take an eye for an eye"

Death's at My Door

I think I've seen somewhere that this is the opening song for the second act and I just - fucking hell, what an opener 😂 they really just wanna destroy all of us, huh?

EDIT: I've been corrected, and it's Justice for Tulsa that starts act 2 - my bad guys, I don't know where I saw otherwise. JfT starting act 2 makes soo much more sense 😂

I wanted to like reach through my headphones somehow and hug Brody Grant, like holy shit

The first time I heard it all I could think about was how much he's going to blame himself when Johnny (and Dally) do die - especially with Johnny having comforted Pony about it

And I'm just emotional about the exploration of Pony thinking of himself as a burden on everyone he loves, especially going back to what Darry says to him in Runs in the Family reprise, just confirming everything that Pony already worries about himself

Favourite line: "I don't believe in the death that you're bringing - the reason I'm living is you"

Throwing in the Towel

I just love brothers okay? This song made me want to like message all my siblings and tell them I love them

I loved that we see Pony's inner thoughts and fears about being a burden on his brothers, immediately followed by seeing Darry's own thoughts and feelings - the two of them being so similar in how they blame themselves for everything

All three of the Curtis brothers being terrified of losing anyone else

AND THIS IS THE SODA CHARACTER REDEPTION I NEEDED - he becomes more than just the womaniser, you can see him having like actual thought and feelings, and the amount of emotion in Jason Schmidt's voice as he's trying to reassure Darry, like this song and Soda's letter gets across everything that makes Soda my favourite character

And there's something to be said about how they're finally like communicating their emotions 😂

Favourite line: "I know your head is full of doubt, but brother that's what love is all about"

Soda's Letter

Musical letters my beloved ❤️

I love songs like these - they're always just so vulnerable

It links to Tulsa '67 Reprise with the reference to how Soda kinda keeps the family all together. This song you can like see the strain that it has on him, trying to keep the brothers who he loves so much together, by trying to tell Pony that Darry does love him even though he shows it in a very different way

also anyone who has seen it and made it this far in the post can you tell me whether they keep in the bit about Pony reading this really heartfelt letter only to go "Soda's so dumb he can't fucking spell" because it's all I could think about when I listened to it for the first time

Favourite line: "Your brother needs you just as much as you need him, and brother we ain't doing to good alone"

Hoods Turned Heroes

The triumphant return of my beloved Two-Bit, and he's doing some king shit

I love him, okay?

This is another song where I know it's really important, but I actually don't have much to say about it, other than I do really enjoy it

Favourite line: "It's time to celebrate Greasers, take pride in the Greaser name"

Hopeless War

I love that it's just Cherry begging Pony not to change, and hoping that he's still an outsider of the Greasers like she is for the Socs, a hope that the two of them are still kindred spirits even after everything that happened

She knows that the rumble is gonna be where Pony loses that last bit of dreamer in him because he's holding just so much anger at the world - I dunno, there's something there I'm sure 😂

it's such a smooth transition into "Trouble" and I wanna SCREAM it's so good

Favourite line: "even if you win, it doesn't change a thing"

Trouble

It feels like a war chant or something

The music is just so agitated

It's like Run Run Brother where I feel the need to be up and moving

Favourite line: "Do it for Johnny, even the scores, time to rally the crew"

Little Brother

I get chills every time I listen to it

Something about Joshua Boone's voice guys, I don't even know like how someone goes about beginning to talk about it, but whoever takes over as Dally has got some big shoes to fill

It's a lament to Johnny, and I feel like I listen to it and I feel the same anger and indignation that Dally feels

It's a song where I listen to it and I know, even without having seen the production, how I'd stage it and that always makes me excited

The longer the song goes on, the more uneasy you feel listening to it

It links him and Darry together again, with how he blames himself for everything that happened to his little brother, he feels like he should have been able to protect Johnny, the way that Darry always tries to protect Ponyboy

The final tempo increase and the discordant violin at the end, and it feels like even just listening to it you're watching him fall into a grief-led madness, and his certainty that there's only one way that his story can end

Favourite line: "They can't take anymore from me - if I ain't got you, then I ain't got nothing else"

Stay Gold

It feels somehow criminal to put these songs next to each other, but I mean obviously they have to be - that's how they want you to feel, but it doesn't mean that I'm not mad about it

I've listened to it like a million times and it still brings me to tears every now and then

There's something about having the hopelessness of "Little Brother", with Dally bring so apologetic at having failed Johny, followed by Johnny asking Pony to tell him that there's still good in the world

Just how much everyone in this story needs each other and they don't realise that the others need them too, yknow?

Johnny being Dally's "gold" - a lot to say about that but yknow, this is already long as fuck

The simplicity of the music itself (same as with Soda's letter - makes them thematically the same blah blah blah with them both being letters and all that), but it makes the song much more vulnerable than some of the others - nothing for Sky Lakota-Lynch to hide behind

Also that line: "I have looked into a thankful father's eyes, telling me I've saved his daughters life", and how that links to what Johnny says in the book about the little girl's life being worth more than his - I dunno, it just got me emotional, okay?

Favourite line: "I hold on to the good 'cause I've made my peace with all the bad" and also "It's easy to forget when you're trying just to make it through"

Tulsa '67 Reprise

WE MADE IT BOYS (seriously though, for real, if you made it this far, thanks for reading through my descent into madness 😂 and please send your own thoughts and such, bc I'm desperate to hear other people's thoughts)

I said it at the beginning, but I think the reprise of this song makes the exposition at the beginning worth it

At the beginning we hear Ponyboy as a dreamer, and at the end he still has that, but rather than idolising and making everything spectacular, he sees beauty in the mundane - he sees it in his brothers, his friends, all of that

The call backs to the original song as well, which allow us to go back to the theme of looking at individuality - the Greasers wanting to be seen as more than just characatures, and by the end they are like fully-fleshed out people rather than just the basic stock figures we initially get them introduced as in Grease Got a Hold

The clearest examples are, of course, Darry and Soda

Darry goes from being "could have been a football star, people say he had a ticket out" to instead being "the toughest guy I've ever known"

Soda goes from "suffers from a broken heart" to "this family's life and soul"

and then it goes from "got no parents, we fend for ourselves" to "can you imagine how proud mum and dad would be"

just something so beautiful about that, I dunno

There's more I could say about the themes of brotherhood and individuality ("grease as their disguise", for example), but I'll spare it for now

Favourite line: "Just too damn good for growing old, and in his memory I stay gold"

Pairing: Javier Peña x f!reader.

Summary: Your friendship with Javi gets rocky as he finds out about your secret boyfriend, hidden because your afraid of his disapproval of him. After getting into a fight at work about you lying to your boyfriend that Javier is your brother instead of your best friend. You decide to own up and tell him, making him have an extreme reaction which makes you upset and Javi set on revenge.

“So did you wanna talk about it?”

“No, not really.” you responded coldly. You appreciated Javier asking, especially because talking about feelings wasn't his thing but you were so frustrated that you couldn’t do more than frown.

The two of you were sitting on the curb late afternoon, in a dimly lit backstreet of Bogotá. Your head in your hands as you tried your best to suppress the tears welling in your eyes that would come out again sooner or later. You wanted to forget this night ever happened.

The two of you were colleagues that met about two years ago when you first joined the DEA as a secretary. After bad impressions and having small rivalry for a few months the two of you soon grew close ultimately realising how similar you were to each other. You had even grown so close that you became best friends. 

You lived next door to each other in the apartments assigned by the DEA and would often spend your nights together, watching your favourite shows, drinking your liquor supplies dry before going to a bar to get more, sitting in comfortable silence as you sat together on the couch to exhausted emotionally and physically from your days at work to talk. As much as neither of you would admit it, you both loved spending basically all of your free time together in whatever way. 

That is until your dating life finally got out of its dry spell. You had bumped into this cute guy in the streets of Bogotá on a busy Sunday morning, near the markets and instantly clicked. You tried to keep your new boyfriend a secret from Javi as long as you could, only spending time with him at his place rather than yours in fear of Javi catching the two of you.

At first you didn't really have a valid reason for why you hid your new partner from Javier, eventually thinking that he would instantly come across as overprotective as soon as he found out. Your suspicions were confirmed when your boyfriend pleaded for the two of you to hang out at your apartment tonight rather than his, and you bumped into Javier leaving his apartment on your way in. Javi immediately stopped in his tracks, mouth agape when he saw you two walking together closely to your door. 

“And who is this, cariño?” Javi said coldly.

You gulped. “Uh…this is José… my boyfriend.”

Javier stared at José  with a hard gaze looking at him up and down, fists tightening into balls.

“You must be Javier, right? She has told me alot about you.” José chuckles, bursting the tension and raising his hand towards Javi’s for a handshake.

“Told you a lot about me, huh?” Javier responded, disregarding the outward hand. His jaw tightening, eyes aflame with jealousy.

Even José began to notice the tension that Javier was directing at him and dropped his hand. To which you glared back at Javier, trying to get him to stop intimidating your new boyfriend.

“Be nice, Javi.” you growled. 

“No it's fine, I get it, he's just being overprotective of you I understand. I'm an older brother too, I feel the need to make sure my little sis is not dating no jerks.” he says smiling.

Javier’s eyes squint, glaring into yours, brows furrowed tightly together, veins popping out his neck. He goes to protest.

“I’m not her-.”

“Um we actually should be going now, I need to start getting dinner ready so we won't eat too late and… my brother has an early start for work tomorrow so he’ll want to go out and get home early so he can get enough rest for tomorrow.”

Javi goes to speak.

“See you at work tomorrow, Javi.” you call out, quickly ushering your boyfriend into your apartment. Shutting the door on a furious Javier standing outside your door.

“Oh I'll see you tomorrow muñeca!” he mumbles angrily to himself, turning away to go and drown his fury in booze and whores.

You were anxious. Anxious since you shut the door in Javi’s face last night, anxious trying to fall asleep, anxious on your way to work this morning. You were so goddamn anxious of how Javi was going to react to you when you saw him this morning, afraid that he was planning or might have already done something irrational that you both were going to regret.

Your heart felt like it was going to fall out of your chest when you finally saw him walk in the door, afraid he was going to make a big scene in front of everyone in the building. 

So it was quite a surprise when he walked calmly past you, not looking your way as he headed to his office. You thought hopefully you were off the hook and that Javi had just decided to forget about it and not shove his nose in your business anymore, but oh were you wrong. Hours flew by without you noticing too much, too absorbed into your paperwork that you had to finish asap. So when Javier knocked on your desk to get your attention, you got quite a fright. 

“Javier, what's up?”

“I need to talk to you, in the archive room. Now!” Javi responded bitterly.

You gulped but decided you shouldn't piss him off anymore and followed him into the remote room. He shut the door harshly as soon as you entered. Turning towards you with a cold-hearted stare.

“What the fuck was that about last night?” Javi catechized.

“Nothing.”

“Nothing? Nothing? You tried to sneak your apparent boyfriend past me, lord knows how long you've been hiding him from me, lying to him and saying I was your goddamn brother?!”

“I just didn't want him to get jealous, okay! I know sometimes men can be fucken insecure about their girlfriends having guy friends so I lied. And I tried to sneak him past you because I knew you would be critically judgmental and scare him off with your intimidation tactics.”

“Hermosa, if you're worried that he's going to be jealous about you having guy friends, he's already a fucken prick that you shouldnt waste your precious time on.”

“Easy for you to say, you’ve never held a relationship long enough for there to be any jealousy about another guy!”

“Wow…thanks muñeca…thanks alot for that.” he huffs and walks out before you can say another word.

“Fuck.” you sigh. You wait a couple moments thinking about what to do now before you walk out the room and go to your desk. Luckily it's hometime so you pack up your stuff and head home. Finally you arrive home to find your boyfriend settled in on the couch.

“Hey babe, how was your day?” José asks you.

“Yeah kinda shitty…. Look, there is something I need to tell you.”

José goes dead silent, a serious look falling across his face.

“...Javier isn't my brother, he's actually just my friend, my best friend or was my best friend. We hang out often but don't worry there never was anything sexual or romantic between us, I'm not exactly the type he goes for, and I'm sorry I lied, I just didn't want you to get jealous and tell me to stop talking to him.” you explain.

Josés jaw tightens, his nostrils flaring. “Javier isn't your brother!” he says furiously. “You're a fucken lying bitch! Ain’t no way I’m having a girlfriend who fucks her “guy friends” behind my back.”

“No, I'm sorry and nothing like that would ever happen in a million years, please believe me.”

“I ain’t ever going to trust another damn word that comes out of your filthy mouth, puta mentirosa!” he slaps you hard across your face leaving a stinging red mark that will be visible for days. Before storming out your apartment, slamming the door behind him. 

You stand there shocked before falling to your knees and crying, head in your hands. Your door suddenly flings open revealing Javi. 

“I  just saw José storming off what- Mi amada, baby what’s wrong, what happened.” he kneels down beside you, hand on your back and you raise your head to look at him with your watery eyes. He immediately sees the burning red handprint across your face. His eyes instantly colder, filled with vengeful thoughts. He stands up, fists curling at his sides.

“That cabrón… I’m going to fucken kill him!” 

“No, please Javi don’t, it was my fault.” you say while standing up.

“I don’t care, he fucken hurt you so I’m going to hurt him back.”

“Javi please, let me talk to him, okay I can sort this out myself.”

He huffs. “Do you even know where he’s gone?”

“No , but I'll find him.”

“Okay but I'm driving you, alright?” 

You decide not to protest and nod. You both walk out of your apartment and go to walk down to Javi's car before you hear the sound of Javier opening his door. You look at him curiously. He looks at you smirking.

“Just going to pack a bag of essentials.”

After driving around the streets of Bogota for a few hours you finally spot Jose’s car parked below a small apartment complex. 

“Well that's his car, so he’ll be somewhere in there.” you say.

Javi goes to open his car door.

“Please Javi let me do it okay, I just want to speak to him nice and calm and sort things out between the two of us.

“Fine but I'm coming in there as soon as I hear yelling or if I feel you need to back up.”

“Sure Javi.” you sigh leaving his car and enter the building. You walk up to the second floor deciding to start there and make your way down. You go to knock at the first door but a noise coming from a few doors down makes you stop. It's moaning, it sounds like a man and a woman.

Reading massively improved my mental health and I want to talk about it in case it can help others!

Y'all, I think we all need to read more books.

I know I'm an author so I WOULD say that and in fact, I DO say that to children at every opportunity (my dyslexia would be a LOT worse if I hadn't read so much as a kid) but hear me out.

So back in ...March/April I was pretty miserable and it was partly because Norwegian winter will do that to an unprepared foreigner but also because it was the anniversary of The Bad Thing so I felt miserable and alone.

I had no way to really remedy the situation.

But one thing I did do was... Finally crack. See, I'd been DYING to reread my Discworld books, but they are in a different country and I can't afford to go get them or have them sent to me. I have a few paper books here though - I mainly took my fairytale collections, because what did you expect? Actually I guess hardly anyone on Tumblr knows me - Alicia does two things. Vampires. And Fairytales. Didn't bring my vampire encyclopedia, too big and heavy. Anyway.

I have a part time job with an hour on the train each way. I started taking my paper books, my fairytale collections. They were full of short things I could finish easily in a train journey.

Some info. I had managed to sour reading for myself some years previously... I mainly read for research purposes, hardly picking up anything just for the fun of it. PSA: Don't do this. Do not do this. Don't. Do NOT.

And then I reread one of the few paper fiction books I had with me. I enjoy fairytales but they do still fall under 'sort of work' for me. This did not. This was a book I am eagerly awaiting the finale to.

Anyway, I finished it quickly, reading it both on and off the train. You know. For fun. Not just fill time I was stuck somewhere.

Finishing it annoyed me. I wanted more stories. I wanted more than fairytales. And so I cracked. I bought Equal Rites as an ebook. See, I'd previously decided I would not buy anything I already owned in paperback as an ebook because... Well, waste of money, something I don't have enough of. To buy my entire discworld collection in ebook format would cost as much as getting on a plane and bringing my paper ones back.

But just ONE book would be alright, wouldn't it?

So anyway I finished the book.

Of course I'm not going to read just ONE discworld book.

So I carefully ration myself ebooks, making a condition for myself that they are mainly for the train, but I am allowed to read them at home too.

And gradually... The fog lifted. Nothing much has changed besides that I'm reading books regularly again. I still have the same problems that were upsetting me in March. I was also HORRIBLY BURNED OUT until last week. But my mood is MASSIVELY improved. Like, hugely improved. And yeah, yeah, it's summer now, so the weather will have helped also. But I can pinpoint my recovery to when I started reading regularly again. And that is to say that while I was burned out, I wasn't ALSO sad.

So from now on I will be making an effort to keep reading books for fun.

It's kind of crazy that I had stopped for so long. I mean. I write books people are supposed to read for fun. Kinda hypocritical of me to like.. not do that.

I think maybe I have created this problem for myself with many of my hobbies. I tried to make drawing into a business, tried to do too much too fast, and since then I've barely drawn. I love cartoons so I watch them in Norwegian to help me learn - means I was never just relaxing while watching a cartoon for a few years. Recently started just watching cartoons in English/Japanese if I darn well feel like it.

...enough tangent, back to Why Reading Is Good.

Don't quote me on this, I am just scribbling down thoughts I've been meaning to write down for a month, therefore, am too lazy to track down any sources, but I'm pretty sure reading books is actually scientifically proven to help your brain?? Just finished watching trolls 3 and I have so many thoughts I must share into the tumblr void!

first. It's a great movie. Ten out of ten songs. The characters are wonderful I LOVE THE FAMILY THEMES! and all the boy band puns and references are wonderfully done cans getting to see where each troll landed in life.

Now for my thoughts. I see alot of the fans being tough on the eldest brother...after all he was tough and pushed everyone to be perfect and get into roles and him snapping at his brothers and shifting the blame a bit for the failure to hit the perfect Harmony wasn't cool. And it resulted in the band and the family breaking up...not to mention him being there for branch.

But I honestly think they should have focused a bit more of WHY he was so intense about the perfect Harmony. The movie points to how this time he clearly wants to do it to save Floyd. Something ALL the brothers are on bored with...and we also know his care for Floyd is genuine as he did immediately go when he heard he was in trouble.

The brothers act like he js all bossy and controlling for no reason..

Which on the surface could parallel the sister in the veneer spaghetti siblings(the nostalgia and joy when my sister remembered what those toys were called XD) on the surface. Which the movie pointed how you shouldn't let someone restrict or guide what you will do or act. Which helped inspire the brother to at least come clean at the end and how the brothers had se p erated due to being serious about that boundary....

But I honestly think the eldest brother was that harsh about the perfect Harmony the first time because he was trying to protect his brothers. Not Just the second time in trying to save Floyd.

Think about it. The Band was together while they were still in the home tree in Bergen town where yearly the Bergens would gather around to feast on the trolls. Yearly means the Bergens knew they had to control how much they took or there wouldn't be anymore trolls to snack on.

We also know that when trolls get too sad they turn Grey and not as tasty and that the happier the troll/most talented the tastier/more valuable they are. AND WE KNOW THE BERGENS kept track to know which were the happiest trolls...hence why Poppy in particular was chosen to be the first troll the prince would get to eat...the tastiest, sweetest. happiest troll.

So I actually think the reason they were a band was because the band could serve as a distraction from the impending yearly pruning of the trolls and keep the trolls happy. Which was good for troll moral...but also meant the Bergens might keep the band alive/not choose to eat them because it meant keeping just 5 trolls alive the more happier/tastier trolls/less risk of trolls turning grey that the bergens could choose from.

Not to mention if they were perfect/special with the perfect Harmony the bergans might Have to keep them alive since the long we the live they might create more tastier talented trolls. Like letting the tastier Brussel sprouts live to procreate instead of eating them immediately. Or selective breading if you will.

And if they were perfect and well loved enough as a band the bergens might put them on the not kill list because if they were eaten it might upset too many of the trolls/risk too many if them turning grey.

They hinted a bit by having the eldest brother bring up how he had been taking care of all the brothers and the pressure it put him under.

But I really wish they had spelled out that the reason he was so fixated on them being perfect was because it was literally him trying to protect them and guarentee they wouldn't be pruned.

Even the simple titles(the sensative one, the fun one, the heartthrob, the leader, the baby ect) makes more sense in the scenerio that he was trying to make them easy to identify so the Bergens would have a easier time recognizing to not eat that specific troll and easier for other trolls to identify with at least one of the brothers to cover their bases to them becoming so popular they couldn't be touched by the Bergens.

It would also create a VERY strong parallel between the eldest brother and Branch in the first movie because Branch was also bossy and judgy and telling everyone they were doing something wrong which was actually branches way of caring for everyone and their safty...but by pushing like that when trolls naturally want to be chill and happy and not bummed out resulted in the other trolls seeing branch as bossy and disregarding branches good points and reasons because they felt he was putting down/disregarding their right to party and be positive.

Which caused other trolls to not want to. be around 'party pooper branch' and branch as a result rejecting the other trolls more in return that him pushing so hard was to keep them safe. With branch getting to the point of pretending like he doesn't care/why he was so harsh to poppy and rejecting hug time even though deep diwn he still cared as we saw him keep and rebuild all the cards he had destroyed.

In this it leads me to believe the eldest brother was bossy/being the partypooper trying to get everyone perfect and lashing out due to stress and fear. Trying to shift his stress on his brothers like branch had done with poppy to cover up the real source of his stress. And like branch,who had been surprised and upset at the other trolls being unreasonable in not realizing branch was right to have fears/that they should be more cautious, the eldest brother struggled to see why his brothers thought his advice was unreasonable when the elder brothers knew his thoughts/motives were to keep them safe by sticking to the band plan.

And him being pessimistic about the harmony note not happening must be because he had fixated on the harmony being the thing that would save his brothers/make them indispensible.

And his bros wanting to quit and blaming him felt like it made him leave himself like how branch would loudly say he doesn't need anyone else and would be alone.

Also why did no kbe adress more that he literally thoight everyone died? He couldn't find them for years and he also couldn't risk being seen by the Bergens...and how all of his brothers were just still upset with him...which made sense since their feelings were valid and he didn't take into account how ge was stressing them out and wasn't seeing them properly....but it felt a bit unfair we didn't see them realize he was that tough because he was trying to protect them and how them disregarding he cared at a must have hurt.

I think if the movie had brought it up it might have been a dark moment...but it would also create a strong thematic parallel with Viva who wanted too afraid and wanted to keep poppy and clay with her where she was going to disregard what they wanted with how he seemed to disregard some of the issues due to thinking he was right fir the greater good. And how scared viva was to risk seeing poppy hurt on the outside/why viva had stayed behind despite her wanting poppy to stay with her and be safe.

And a parallel with king peppy who hadn't reminded Peppy about her sister or the trolls who had been left behind due to his grief. But also meant poppy had a simple view of her dad and had disregarded his advice in the second movie and a bit in the first because she didn't have a full view of the situation and the complex feelings he might have.

Anyone anyone else find some of the pieces of the brothers fascinating...on one hand the fun brother has clearly been trying to over compensate and prove he isn't fun which isn't exactly healthy but does make me think of how branch enjoys some boring things as well as some darker stuff. Like a underground bunker. The safty exit parallel XD and branch not minding the sad country song with this guy being into sad book club and branch being into poetry. Nkt to mention him taking care of Viva and understanding some of her issues much like Branch had that dynamic with Poppy sometimes reversed with her being the one to be more positive and get him out of his paranoia with also him being the more practical guy providing the safty exits so to speak.

Branch and the eldest brother have survival aspects and skills and relying on that as a first resort(like branch and his whittled spears) and big brother with his weird shock starfish that didn't dissolve the Diamond and thinking of a diamond hammer. With the elder being more on the traveling side but still jumping in to help like branch did eventually with poppy. Or when he left to school when barbs letter arrived. But also both write now...branch having written lyrics or poems at least and the elder having written their past songs abd both getting a bit defense at times.

The heartthrob is clearly good at scheduals to some degree with running a restraunt and a romantic with his wife which we know branch has a heart throb romance side ;). And Branch did work out like bruce/spruce used to in the past.(which I like how comfortable the Dad was was in his body since he didn't need to work out anymore and was on a safe island after his solo career) and has his own considerate side that he knew he'd be inconviencing his wife. Not to mention both get goaded by their loved ones into the practice when both were reluctant at first.

And of course the sensative brother who is smart and more practical in knowing what would shatter the diamond and figuring out it was a trap and having that 'really?' Face when the big brother tried to save him by himself much like Branch with some of Poppy's aspects in not thinking through some of the plan and getting ahead of herself.

I'm just saying....mister leader feels to me like he has a slight missing component in tjat he was harsh to try to protect his brothers in the purge system they had going on and his brothers hadn't realized the details because he didn't explain it to them(using how he didn't jave a way with words and would touch a nerve with each brother pretty easily each time he tried to reconnect)...and it also makes the situation with poppy make even more sense because if it was prince grisle's first troll...the Bergens would break the rule of leaving the happiest most talented trolls alone so they could make even happier and tastier trolls because Poppy had a similar happy older sister.

Finding out the Bergens would take Poppy probably resulted in the trolls to come up with a desperate plan to save her(hence the tunnels) finally being thought up. And how everyone had to act natural to not Allert the Bergens.

also....I found it interesting it didn't occur to John dory that his brothers would want him to stay which while kindof insensative(especially to not think of branches perspect). Make sense when he doesn't get any type of goid welcome from hjs bros and how branch had told him it was just the mission and done and had immediately shut him out at the start...but also felt like John relying on that to protect himself because his other brothers were upset with hjm again and blaming him entirely for the break up. Which deep down he probably did blame himself...but also it seems those trolls alive during that time seemed used to death...and it seemed he thought everyone died and we just kindof glossed over how that probably messed him up? And how we saw viva kindof try to pretend at times she was fine qhen she was clearly hurting real bad.

Also does anyone else think if branch had stayed on the bus then Floyd might not have almost died since they'd be taking all 4 of the other brother's talent and they could have broken out later? Hypothetical? Or no to that?

Though honestly it gets really interesting figuring out what each brother knows. The eldest returned and thought everyone was dead and had no way to track them down or assume they were okay after leaving for the mountain. But having no clue the survived until a month ago seeing that concert situation or at least hearing about it. And then of course how he had gone to try to save flyod and tried to find the other brother's while making it to branch...with the best guess a unmarked postcard from bruce/spruce.

Clay seemed separated during the attack or at least came across the survivors that escaped in the other tunnels and then got trapped in the golf course trying to make it safe and care for the traumatized survivors from the attack but he knew of the escape plan so at least assumed branch and grandma had gotten out...while viva didn't know if poppy or er dad was okay(specifically poppy).

Especially considering the no trolls left behind aspect might have led her to believe peppy was at strong risk of dying and how poppy had been a target...and how there was probably risk of being found in the earlier years since the cook was looking for them.

But it didn't seem to occur to him that rosiepuff might die and leave branch alone....maybe because he heard about the escape plan from viva.

Bruce/Spruce had his own family and a seemingly successful career and resteraunt so couldn't just up and leave but it seems unclear how much he knew? Like it didn't seem like he assumed they were all dead like the elder did. And he did at least send a post card to the eldest once...so maybe he also found out a way to contact or at least assume some pop trolls were alive after the second movie as more trolls stopped isolating and mixing more?

And of course we know alot of people dodn't know where to find the pop trolls in the forest anyway and how risky it can be to travel if you don't know what your doing. And how there was some common pop trolls bad/judged knowledge hovering happening previously with all the seperated troll sections.

Also..anyone else trying to piece together what thus all means for the king? Did he assume she was crushed or eaten? Or that she had escaped? Of course he couldn't leave the main group behind to go looking for personal reasons since he is a leader and tge bergen trauma was fresh and they needed to work on settling in a new place. Did the king just have the issue where he thought she died and he was shocked poppy didn't remember her but it was too painful to bring up due to his own grief? Which he couldn't linger on since he had to be the leader and didn't know how to adress it because Poppy had such a positive view of how he saved everyone since he literally went back and used the clothes off his back to save a while bunch of them. Like I have heard of the grief being so bad that some parents don't bring it up. Heck even in animation it happened in barbie with the Pegasus movie.

LPS POPULAR REMAKE RECOMMENDATION AND RAMBLE

(but on an account that aligns with my "hamsterrod" "Rodney" one.)

Once I get into rambling about the series itself, I'll leave a cutoff to avoid spoiling anyone. However, since this is also a recommendation, I better give you all a good descriptor of what you might like about it.

The LPS Popular remake (MLP Fever on YouTube! Hey Cleo.) is a new spin on the series started by SophieGTV over a decade ago. I say new spin super heavily, because while lots carries over, it does deviate quite a bit from the original. (Love that part about it, just so you know.)

The first season takes place in the same highschool setting of the original, with the second taking place in college instead. To be as vague as possible about what to expect from this story, here are some things I think Tumblr users might like!

• Canonically LGBT characters. I'm aware of two (unlabelled in canon) sapphic characters, a bisexual character, a canonically gay character, and a canonically trans character. The majority of which appear super early on. • A highschool drama. Well, for the first season anyway. It's a lot closer to the original than season 2, but has enough differences to ease you into the changed plot and the things occuring in season 2. (Season 2 takes place in college.) • A satisfying conclusion for the characters in both season 1 and season 2. Really, if you only watch season 1 (which I don't recommend, watch the whole thing!) you will probably be just as alright with that as an ending as you would watching both seasons. And season 3 is confirmed, so I think it can really only go up from here. • Fairly realistic character conflicts, including a lack of a "real villain" for any particular plotpoint in the show.

Alright, onto the series itself.

Savannah Reed. Savvy is pretty much the bringer of her own destruction, she has a lot more obvious flaws in this series than the original, but that is absolutely not a bad thing. Savvy is the innocent girl in the beginning, but she's easily corrupted by her own heartbreak and her own experiences with other characters. In a way, Savannah's innocence is what corrupts her. She's really getting a handle on social situations for what seems like the first time, struggling to manage her emotions until they make her act out. She wants Brooke back, she wants her friend back, but that initial rejection from Brooke just makes her so upset. She spirals out of control, getting makeovers, hitting on Sage, dating Sage, and the conflict of season 1 all explodes at the party, sending her further down the tracks of being exactly what hurt her in the first place. Savannah and Brooke almost switch places for the remainder of season 1, and even after their reconciliation, Savvy's self destructive behavior doesn't really seem to end.

Season two for Savannah is particularly heartbreaking because the worst of it all is entirely based on a miscommunication. Briac isn't with Brooke, and the very fact that she doesn't know that sends her to be with Tom. She denies feelings for Brooke, over and over, running from things and inadvertently hurting herself, Tom, and Brooke in the process. Her running away at the end of s2 to be with Brooke was basically the perfect end to the character arc she had in season 2. To end the season where she runs and runs and runs from everything, her final action being running away to Brooke is so fitting.

Brooklyn Hayes. Really, who doesn't love a good mean girl? Brooke herself, apparently. Even from her first full interaction with Savannah in season 1, it was relatively clear to me that she wasn't someone who wanted to hurt anyone, especially not Savannah. Savannah coming to see her is, unfortunately, the thing that breaks down the persona she'd set up for herself. Brooke couldn't stand Savannah being in her school because it means she'd have to accept that she has had feelings for her the whole time. It's especially notable the change she goes through the moment the jig is up, the moment she can't keep her persona up, she changes to a lot more relaxed version of herself, even if she's miserable while she's at it. Season 2 is the same for her, really. She's grown a far meaner persona to keep Savannah at arms length while still being there for her. It's clear the jerkish side of her is either a front, or just not quite her real feelings, because she behaves so much different with Briac. She wants for Briac what she can't have for herself, and yet they both find happiness at the end of season 2. Brooke is a caring character, one that's actually pretty kind once her walls fall down, but she needs those walls, she needs to keep Savannah out, she needs to keep her friends out. Letting anyone in besides Briac is out of the question for her until the last minute, the last weeks before Savannah is married. Even then, even when Savannah knows, even when Savannah confesses the same to her, she lets her go. She doesn't want to push it. And Savvy choosing to push herself to leave is exactly what both of them needed. Brooke is tired of acting, Savannah needs to take the action step instead of letting everything happen to her. And she does.

Tom Dawson. Tom is only introduced in season 2, but he is so, so very major once he's there. I think Tom is an interesting example of how differently the perspective of the audience and the perspective of the characters is. Tom can't know Savannah's thoughts, she never tells him a thing, so he feels like he can love her. Tom is so tired of being seen as someone so famous, someone that people only want for his status, and for Savannah to treat him like a person, it's extremely exciting for him. Tom acts fast, he wants Savannah, the one girl who treats him properly, to stay with him. He jumps the gun with the early proposal, but why wouldn't he? Tom seems so isolated even with so many people that "love" him. It doesn't seem like he has all that many friends, he is just dragged into Savannah's group and we don't see much of him with anyone else. He's kind, he's caring, he listens, but Savannah never tells him anything he needs to hear, never tells him anything she needs to say. And if she did? I think he would be more than understanding, he wants Savannah's happiness. He wants her to be able to have a say in things, he asks at several points if she wants to be with him, and she lies. He's really the only character that doesn't get that conclusive end in the season 2 finale, but I have faith that there will be an expansion on the aftermath once season 3 rolls around.

I know most people on here love that the dash can be chronological unlike on other social medias and that it's what most people want (but the nice thing about tumblr is that you can make it fit a lot of your needs) so from your previous ask, where you specified that you were talking about your mobile dash and not just your dash in general, I thought "maybe this person don't know how to do that on mobile?" it hadn't crossed my mind that some people didn't keep their dash in chronological order (which was a wrong assumption on my part) I wasn't upset about your dash organisation, I just felt that you request was a bit much.

Did DLS Out DD During a DDU Recording and Make Him Cry?

This has been making the rounds on Twitter and YouTube and even Tumblr, for a while now. Fancam footage of DLS making a boyfriend joke and then leaning in to a supposedly upset DD and trying to smooth things over.

This whole thing is based on fancam footage taken during the recording of the DDU 20190825 episode. In this episode dating was being discussed using four beautiful young women, DD and QF along with two handsome young guests as a backdrop.

The subtitles of the fan cam present a scenario where DLS supposedly refers to DD as ‘not needing a girlfriend because he already has a boyfriend’ and then leaning into a supposedly emotional DD and apologizing, trying to calm him down; saying viewers won’t understand what was said.

Let’s take a look at the video:

The full fan cam footage that this out of context clip was taken from can be found here.

If you watch the episode and the complete fan cam footage, you’ll see that this happened during the segment where they were being asked to comment on various dating scenarios. An announcer would present each scenario in a multiple choice format, asking the women to choose between four options based on the type of guy they’d most like to date. For example:

How would you like the boy you like to invite you for a meal on the weekend?

A] Save your weekend for me. Do not say no.

B] You had breakfast at 7:50 this morning and lunch at 12:30. It’s already 7pm now. You have to eat meals on time. Why don’t I take you out for dinner?

C] I tried to explain my thoughts when I look at you, but I failed. So do you have time for dinner with me this weekend? Let’s talk about it.

D] Get out. Dinner.

My opinion

We should always, always be suspicious of anything that is presented without context. 99.9% of the time, when someone removes context they are doing so to mislead audiences. This clip is a perfect example of that. The video creator appears to have removed important context in order to make the clip better fit the narrative they’re trying to sell.

In this segment of the episode, the hosts and guests were seen commenting on the options as they were being read out. The comments DLS is making appear to be in response to something the announcer has said. I don’t think the comments have anything whatsoever do to with DD.

I also don’t think DD looks even remotely upset. Certainly not near tears. Some fans seem over-eager to claim DD is crying. We’ve all seen DD cry, but it’s exceptionally rare and only happens in very personal situations. This doesn’t qualify. It wouldn’t qualify even if everything the video creator claimed was true. DD would be more likely to get angry than cry in such a situation. He isn’t doing either of these things.

Whoever made this video simply doesn’t ‘get’ DD’s personality at all. The people who buy this are similarly unfamiliar with him.

I invite everyone to use your own eyes and your own judgment. Ignore what’s being claimed, ignore the framing you’ve been given of the scenario by me or the video creator, and instead just watch the clip. Does that look like a man on the verge of tears to you?

Second and third opinions

I asked the indispensable @potteresque-ire and @knivescharade what they thought of the clip. I didn’t tell them anything about my opinion, but simply sent the clip and asked their thoughts - are the subtitles correct, what do you think of the lip reading, etc.

wow, for this person to put this analysis in i would say that lip reading is a very difficult skill. and to try and lip read someone like DLS, who speaks like a bullet train and doesn't really enunciate SUPER well (unlike Han-ge, for example) ... i would say the interpretation is only very vaguely possible at best.

i know both the cand int fandom have a major something for how WYB keeps swallowing around XZ, but honestly. WYB tends to get throat issues. i think swallowing has become one of his habits at this point. so... in conclusion... there are already lots of major, amazing, and irrefutable candies in the fandom already, let's not bother with such iffy ones :D

he is indeed saying that "this man has a boyfriend", but i cant quite remember which part of the show that was in. i watched that episode, it was something to do with love and having 4 guys paired with 4 girls or something like that, and listening to 'types of guys responses to etc etc' so DLS wasnt saying that WYB has a boyfriend - he was saying that 'this man', the one whose voice was playing in the audio, has a boyfriend.

That tracks with my interpretation of what was happening.

Unless people have learned the dialect, Mandarin speakers cannot understand Cantonese, and vice versa. This is why I don't support or wash auditory candies, especially if it involves someone from Northern China (such as DLS, who is a Beijing native). Their local accents make their Mandarin even more difficult to understand.

This dialect restriction is actually not specific to a me, or other Hong Kongers. Someone whose family is entirely from Northern China would be equally prone to making mistakes if they're asked to lip read southern Chinese.

Lip reading also removes tonal consideration, which makes everything that much more uncertain. Have you heard of the Mr Shi Eats the Lion story? This is why, even if I hear some similarities, I'd hesitate to say X has to be saying ABC. Context is important.

Cantonese speakers are especially picky about tone. Mandarin have 4. We have 6 or 9, depending on who you ask. So... I may be more picky than I should be that way too. And I don't want to spoil anyone's fun 😊

The translation was correct in the sense that it was faithful to the Chinese words in the clip I saw, which replicated what DLS said accurately. But the video itself was from a fancam. Where that fancam happened (and got cut off) was at Q3 at the Q & A segment, starting ~9:34 of the official YouTube clip.

DLS said what he said half way through the voiceover of Option A (very precisely, right after the words "I'm the only one"). Technically speaking, therefore, he wasn't talking about DD.

However, it was also a little strange why DLS said what he said. If you watch that segment, all options have a certain personality attached to them. C was very talkative / pretentious. D was connected to DD because it was blunt and direct. A was the so called "overbearing CEO" personality... which is common in het romance dramas but isn't one that has been connected to the gay stereotype. And so, DLS's timing of saying that ... is curious.

Dd did look a little ... I wouldn't say upset, but tense after DLS said that. Maybe it's because that comment kinda came out of nowhere (because of its curious timing), and so it would be read as hinting at something. But that comment is harmless, wording wise.

Alternate theory

I’ve seen some talk from fans about a different theory for why DLS said what he said. Fans say the announcer for option A was Bian Jiang, the actor who did the voice of LWJ in The Untamed. They say that DLS was making a joke about LWJ not needing a boyfriend because he already has one. That actually makes a lot of sense to me as well, and if that’s really Bian Jiang, then I’d say that’s the most likely explanation for this entire thing.

Conclusion

It’s my firm opinion that DLS was not talking about DD having a boyfriend, nor was DD ‘near tears’ in this clip. Whatever DLS said to DD after that, it almost certainly wouldn’t have been ‘words of comfort to placate an upset DD’.

The Bian Jiang theory fits best, but we don’t need to know why DLS said what he said to be able to conclude he wasn’t talking about DD.

If anyone wants a better candy from this episode, look no further than when he emerges from “door #2″, chosen by one of the women as someone she’d like to date based on the food he’d picked out, and immediately launches into “I want to take a man back to my place and hide him.” A LWJ reference (which DLS and Wang Han clarify with him because they appear baffled by what he just said), but still a tactful, perfect rejection of this woman he’s being paired with. 😅

HOT TAKE NO. 2: Olivia Rodrigo's SOUR or how it relates to characters in Fate (so I am not the only one hurting)

I was quiet for a while, shadowbanned from the tag (thanks tumblr), and now I am throwing these around like they are free. Me and @mindfairies both love SOUR and we chat a lot about our fave music, fate and all the things in life. One day we had this lovely conversation (where she likes to hurt my feelings) and we talked about songs from this album and how they relate to certain characters/ships in the show. Now, I cannot listen to the album without thinking about it (and this sucks, cuz the CD got stuck in my car radio and I cannot get it out, so I listen to it very often). I will again, try to elaborate on everything, with song lyrics and my personal humble explanations. And if you yet didn't hear the album, I highly recomment it.

n Track no. 1: Brutal - With this song I don't think I need to point our particular parts of the lyrics to make it make sense. I think we agreed this song was so Terra. Olivia sings about how she is percieved by her friends, how she feels on her own and that it never is enough. And I don't want you to think I tie this song to Terra because she is insecure, no not at all. I just feel like Terra has always been in the middle of everything but also nothing, and no one paid enough attention to her. Even in S1 Terra is easily dismissed by Musa (which I am still super salty about) in the room, she acts like she doesn't hear when we know she does. She slips up with this when she asks Aisha about her swiming twice a day everyday. Stella is just being plain rude to Terra for some reason and Aisha doesn't have much of an interaction with her either. Sam is more insterested in her suitmate, Riven is and asshole crowned, Dane just completly changes, even her dad isn't taking her into consideration when she asks him if he needs help. So the girl might just get up everyday with the thought of it being brutal out there. But hang in there Terra, you have much more to do and I know you do!!

Track no. 2: Traitor: Now we are getting into the crying o'clock territory. We just might, just might. For me this song screams Stella/Sky. But mostly from Stella's perspective for reasons. I think Sky truly loved Stella, and she did too before the break-up happened. When the got back together, Sky didn't seem to be that much into Stella anymore. It was because his eyes were already set on someone else. Stella knew it, she ain't stupid and maybe Traitor is a great example of her hurting.

I played dumb, but I always knew That you talked to her, maybe did even worse - Stella fully knowing that he and Bloom aren't just "friends" as he claims them to be. The scene where they meet in his room after her mother wasn't satisfied with her performance screams this line. Stella is upset because Sky promised her he would be there, just a text away. She texted him multiple times, but he was busy runing around for Bloom. When he leaves her there, she knows, that it's over for them and it was over for them way before this argument. Because Bloom was always his interest, not her.

And ain't it funny how you ran to her The second that we called it quits? - self-explanatory isn't it? Stella left the school, and Sky was so quick to change his interest to Bloom.

You betrayed me And I know that you'll never feel sorry For the way I hurt, yeah You talked to her when we were together Loved you at your worst, but that didn't matter It took you two weeks to go off and date her Guess you didn't cheat, but you're still a traitor - I know Stella has a big part in their relationship going numb. Sky was hurt 100% when she left him for the first time. Next time it was her who hurt, because he chose someone else, way before she even left him.

Ain't it funny? Remember I brought her up And you told me I was paranoid? - "You know the girl you were talking to, Bloom? Yeah, she's my suitmate." "So, what does it mean Stell? That I can't talk to her?" "I didn't say that." "Then what are you saying?" sir 👀

Track no. 3: Driver's licence - Here this can be understood from two points of view. Bloom or Stella, which one you choose. Since I did the previous track for Stella, I will do this one for Bloom, so our girl also gets the attention she deserves.

And you're probably with that blonde girl Who always made me doubt She's so much older than me She's everything I'm insecure about - spill the clean wine over here, this whole sections is just about Stella and how Bloom feels about her. She isn't so much older, but is a year older, she is a blonde girl and indeed she is very pretty. Honestly, being in Stella's presence, everyone is a bit insecure.

And all my friends are tired Of hearing how much I miss you, but - not too much of a sad context but, Terra warned Bloom about Sky being the best guy, but it isn't the best way to go down because of Stella. In the end we know Stella isn't mad at Bloom, and honestly it'd be stupid for her to be. It was Sky who chose her and not Bloom chosing him.

Track no. 4: 1 step forward, 3 steps back - Let me clarify in the very begining, I consider Beatrix's and Andreas' relationship very toxic, nowhere romatic. These songs are break-up songs of course, but I want you all to understand this is more about particular lines that speak to me, which showcase their relationship. With this I will elaborate why this is such a Beatrix song. Maybe it's my belief and I am super wrong. Beatrix is being exploited and used for her magic, so Rosalind and Andreas get what they want. In the end, seeing Farah and Alfea fall under their control. I believe Beatrix has never knew true love, and Andreas was really strict about her upbringing. In the depth of her soul she must feel a bit of a longing for love, praise. That is why this song just screams Beatrix with all its possible ways.

Track no. 7: Enough for you - This isn't a secret, I never made it a secret. I stan Stella with all my being and I was hurting for my girl (and I still am, anytime I rewatch Fate S1). This song is dedicated mostly to Stella and her mother, and how their relationship was shown in the show. We don't know the full backstory, but from what we've seen, their relationship isn't the best (I could have a whole post about this thing alone). Again, I am saying these are break-up songs so not all lines might be relatable, but I will try to show you again on few lines what I mean.

She is very critical of her child, what we could see in the scene where Farah praised Stella's work while Luna wasn't very happy about the results. "You make her make a rainbow to showcase her powers." No praise, no good job or anything. And Stella just seems so sad and broken, because she is trying so hard to be everything that she likes. And it's never enough.

This song is more like a reflections of older Stella or current Stella at all the things that happened to the point where she is today (and that specificaly being the end of S1).

Now I don't want your sympathy I just want myself back - After all those years, Stella finally found people who like her for who she is. The only person till now was Sky who know who Stella truly was. "Other people can't see that, until you don't see it." he tells her when she comes runing back to him. Opening up to the Winx girls, accepting them as her friends opened Stella's eyes about her never truly being herself, because her mother insisted on looks being everything (not only talking about clothes.) She realizes she is much better like this, loved and calm, with the people who actually care about her.

Don't you think I loved you too much to be used and discarded? Don't you think I loved you too much to think I deserve nothing? - When the realiztion hits Stella, she remembers all she has done for her mother. Because still, it's her mother and I doubt that Stella would not love her mother. Maybe that is why it hurts so much to be rejected, because she loves her and she only wants her mother to love her back the same. Until she won't do what she wants her to, won't be the way she expects her to, Stella will never get the full attention and love of her mother. These two lines showcase this perfectly I think.

And older Stella now knows, that she will never be enough for her, until she doesn' do what Luna expects of her. We know she won't, not now when she has her friends.

Track no. 8: Happier - I know, I know, you will probably throw me out of the window till I finish this. I am trying to change up the songs, and the people I use them for, but once again, I have to use Stella/Sky for this one.

The break-up in the show wasn't a dramatical one, it was just Sky having enough of Stella's bullshit. But he moves on pretty fast to Bloom, and indeed she brings out the better in him. I've done a whole post about Sky & Stella being the right person, wrong time trope where I talk about their relationship more in detail and why I think they were both not good for each other in the moment they met. Bloom does bring out the better in him, because she lets him breath and tell her what he feels like. I am not saying Stella isn't a good listener, but she was overwhelmed with her own feelings when they date. Sky was her rock, and maybe out of respect, he didn't want to bother Stella with his problems.

Oh, I hope you're happy, but not like how you were with me I'm selfish, I know, I can't let you go So find someone great but don't find no one better I hope you're happy, but don't be happier – I don’t want to be this person, but also I want to be this person. I still think Stella is jealous a little of Bloom & Sky. While she loves seeing him happy, because now she realizes that what matters the most is seeing the people you love happy, there is still this little sense that what he has, shouldn’t be better what they had. Because if he does, maybe he will completely forget about her. She wished him happiness, but hopefully he won’t be happier with her now.

And do you tell her she's the most beautiful girl you've ever seen? - I read some parts of the Winx book, and one thing I recall pretty good is when Sky and Stella have a talk after they defeated the burned one in the forest. Sky was thinking about Stella in a very loving way, saying how beautiful her hair was and how beautiful she is. I think Sky told her numerous times too. But now maybe it’s Bloom whom he is saying these things to.

But she's beautiful, she looks kind, she probably gives you butterflies – Stella is reminiscing about their time together and she had her own butterflies when she spent time with Sky. Now, it’s Bloom who is giving them to him. He radiates happiness and comfort around her, and Stella knows and sees all of this.

Track no. 9: Jealousy jealousy – AAAAAA! Now I have a problem who to choose for this one, but in this case, I will go with someone I find better and more interesting to explain it for. Beatrix! Why so? Beatrix is a very confident, badass, bad bitch, gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss type of girl. And in S1 she is compared to Bloom many times, or she compares herself. I doubt Beatrix would ever be visibly or vocally jealous of Bloom. Deep down I believe, maybe Beatrix wishes to be partly like her. Indeed, they are very similar, just on a different end of the same spectrum.

Beatrix has gotten the shorter end of the stick I think (another post might be done solely on this topic). Right, she was raised in the Otherwold, but Bloom got loving parents and a cozy home. We don’t know where or how Beatrix grew up, but for sure it wasn’t a loving household as Bloom’s. Sky is very handsome, and while we know Beatrix knows he is practically her step-brother, what if she might fancy him too? Sky seems like the guy everyone fancies in school. He is this good-guy, neighbor next door type guy. Even the mean girls can fall for him. Even is we don’t see Beatrix having any hots for him, why she cannot be jealous? If she is jealous about many other things, Sky might just be a small tip of the iceberg for her. Riven is amazing tho (I am in love you Riven, I will take you if she doesn’t want to!!) but it’s Riven. Sky’s best friend, who follows Sky around. And she wants the good stuff, the core thing.

Track no. 10: Favorite crime – I was wondering who to do for this one. Again, I wanted to do Stella/Sky, but on second thoughts, I think this could work for Bloom/Sky as well. Maybe Riven and Beatrix? You can tell me.

It's bittersweet to think about the damage that we do 'Cause I was going down, but I was doing it with you Yeah, everything we broke, and all the trouble that we made – Sky was hesitant to help Bloom at first when she didn’t go to the assembly. Still, he stayed behind to help her look for the fairy she dreamed of, the one that left her in the first World. Sky was going against his orders, helping the girl he cared for and started to develop feelings for.

Oh, look what we became – Come back to this line for future reference, when we see where their relationship goes after the end of S1. Bloom is responsible for two things that extremely influence Sky’s future life and function at Alfea: 1.) his adoptive father figure whom he was growing up with for the past 17 years is taken away because of an attempted murder of his father & 2) his father who was presumably dead, shows up at Alfea, ready to take it under control no matter what that means for the school. It’s all because Bloom freed Rosalind, who set her plan into motion. So, what does the future hold for Bloom & Sky? We will see and then maybe, we can come back to this one line and discuss it. I will leave it open for now.

Track no. 11: Hope u ok – I don’t have a favorite song on this album, for reason that I cannot actually choose. Each song speaks to me in a very different way, and it depends on my daily mood which one is my current favorite. But this one... firstly, I didn’t put much thought to this song, because it was simply sad. Then I focused more on the lyrics, and it hit places I never knew a song could it. In 90% of time when I hear this son I will cry like a baby for many reasons. This is just such a strong song, it has 3 minutes, but I can reflect on many things in those 3 minutes. When a person is hurting, going trough loss or just hard time, this song can be such a comfort. Me myself went trough loss in the past year and a half. But this isn’t about me right now. I love this song with all my heart, I will never stop talking to them and thinking about one person to tie this song to... I’ve came up with one that fits the best. Who else is dealing with loss throughout the season? Musa. That influences her and how she acts towards her suitemates or Sam. Boiling all those feelings up inside herself until it’s Terra, who she tells.

She has a courageous heart, is a good friend and a great daughter. Every mother is proud of their child, and happy they were created. Musa and her mother were together in her last moments and I believe, and I want to believe that those might have been her last words to het daughter: I am so proud you were created. The last part of the verse cannot be addressed directly to Musa because her mom isn’t alive anymore. I like to believe if her mom could, she would tell her she misses her and hopes she is doing her absolute best. That Musa didn’t stop living, just because she isn’t with her anymore.

Closing this chapter and moving on must be hard for her.

God, I hope that you're happier today 'Cause I love you, and I hope that you're okay – Again her mother who cannot reach her anymore, hope and it’s her only hope, that Musa is okay, and she moved on. That she is happier everyday more and more, not being stuck in the past. Her mother didn’t want her to stop living, just because she wasn’t able anymore.
