The Holy Vestments of Mornmaster Sergei von Zarovich
The nights in this valley are deep and treacherous, the darkness suffocating and choking out the very air that we breathe. My brothers-in-arms have fallen to those things from the woods. Every time their cries were smothered and their lights quickly extinguished, I thought I would surely perish the same.
But that gold and white gleam splendidly in conjured daylight, the blue as vibrant as the noon sky. I never thought I would see red and not think of blood, but of fire. Warm and soothing. Mornmaster Sergei continues to keep us safe, and for as long as he holds the sun over this dark valley, I will hold my loyalty to him.
-- Knight Tudorus of the Holy Office of Barovia, Ordo Solis
"Raven's Inquisition" is a Curse of Strahd prequel campaign I am currently playing in where we get to explore setting elements and character relations that otherwise could not have been explored in the canon module. The DM @emp-roar is constructing the campaign as an adaptation of the "I, Strahd" novel, where Barovia has yet been established, Strahd is still human, and the players are all inquisitors overtaking the Tsolenka Valley under the von Zarovich crest and the banner of the Morninglord.
I am personally interested in Sergei von Zarovich as a character due to his interactions with our party and my player character, Omen, specifically. I then decided to create a concise concept sheet displaying the various layers of his holy vestments.
Credit due to Aciduous' Paladin player that has created the rank insignias for the Morninglord Church!
Edit: how could I forget?

Listening to the audiobook for I, Strahd so I can better get into the bastard's head for DMing purposes and man. He's certainly a peculiar fellow, hm? I'm not that far in so, no spoilers please, but it's interesting to compare between how he was at the start of this novel compared to how he's described in the CoS book
Can't wait to see what comes next!

It has come to my attention that in studying Alek Gwilym, guard Captain and steward of Castle Ravenloft, I have neglected to study one critically important thing:
Castle Ravenloft

look gang i LOVE seeing all of you shipping strahd and alek and i like, cannot do that to myself. i haven’t read i, strahd and i’m like 90% sure that the things contained in that tome would obliterate the canon i’ve established for my game. i’m halfway through and just finding my stride and i cannot just introduce a whole bunch of really good and compelling content that will make me want to rewrite everything!! i want to see your pretty blond man so bad but alas it cannot be so.

I have a massive soft spot for the book I Strahd, especially the moment when he takes a break from being a big sad evil dork and just takes the time to pet some bats.

Best moments in I, Strahd (but it's mostly Strahd being a dramatic bitch):
"I could scale this tower instead of taking the stairs, but I'm wearing my nice clothes today sooo..."
"At least you wore black for the funeral." "I always wear black. I just like wearing black." "... You do look good in black" "Right??"
Strahd wins the award for worst wedding gift ever.
"Lord Strahd? What happened to Sergei?" (too busy being an emo motherfucker to respond)
"Lord Strahd! We're under attack!" (too busy being a horny motherfucker to respond)
"Well, the love of my life may be dead and her corpse mysteriously gone, but at least the bats have accepted me as one of their own."
That very awkward interaction where Strahd just chucked a letter at a dude's face and ran away
Strahd becomes a furry, aka "On all levels including physical, I am a wolf. awoo"
The implication in chapter 8 that whenever Sergei and Tatyana went out for like. a romantic thing together, Strahd came along with them ("I can't believe it's finally me and you, and you and me, just us, and your brother Strahd.")
"I can't BELIEVE this man would take Tatyana into his home and treat her as family just so he could betray her trust and MARRY her. What kind of monster does that??"
Every time Strahd goes "This is it. This is how I die" like, he's just ready to give up on life at the drop of a hat
