Hello all, and welcome to my kink bingo rec list! I bring you 16 fics from 11 different authors, written from 2018-2021, with ratings from general to explicit, with a word count from 2k to 15k words.

All are kink-centric or otherwise kinky oneshots from the Quanzhi Gaoshou / The King's Avatar / 全职高手 fandom. (All adaptations are considered.)

Han Wenqing/Ye Xiu Heart 7k

A 5+1 fic starting in Season 2, in which Ye Xiu and Han Wenqing made a bet that the championship loser gives the winner a handjob. Here’s the thing: YX and HWQ are Glory gods, not sex gods, and this fic portrays them as the teenage virgin gamers they are. It’s endearing, it’s sweet, it’s funny, it’s at some points intensely secondhand embarrassing. Ye Xiu feels distinctly live-action flavored, so if you liked him there, give this fic a shot.

Wei Chen and Swoksaar fuck over a desk while trying to one-up each other. Now, my fondness of this type of power dynamic is in kink territory even on its own, so it as part of actual sex is a treat. And it’s good sex, too! Wei Chen is so obviously into the rough handling, and it’s both hot and funny to watch him complain when he’s so clearly enjoying himself. Bonus points for hidden knives with a happy ending.

Dai Yanqi/Liu Fei Heart 2k

Dai Yanqi and Liu Fei meet up in the corridors before their post-match press conferences. I enjoyed this fic’s balance: one part the connection of being women in a sexist field, one part comfort, and one part kinky sex. Dai Yanqi fingers Liu Fei under her skirt, right there, before the conference. There’s a dash of hurt/comfort thrown in as well.

Han Wenqing/Zhang Xinjie Head 2k

A slice-of-life with Han Wenqing and Zhang Xinjie together, including sex. I enjoy this piece because of the way the author leaned into Zhang Xinjie’s characterization. now I’m not saying it’s the autism, except that I am. In the novel, we don’t get to see Zhang Xinjie so personally, so this is a treat for ZXJ Appreciators (of which I lead the fanclub). Their relationship isn’t a traditional TV romance (nor is it, arguably, a romance at all) or a fanfic-shipper’s-special, and I like the piece all the more for this. The way they’re together feels right. Additional mention for dom/sub.

Xiao Shiqin/Sun Xiang  Gut 2k

Speaking of power dynamics that are inherently kinky, *gestures vaguely to Sun Xiang*. In this fic, Xiao Shiqin instructs SX through some arena matches while properly motivating him to obey. Sun Xiang not only listens to directions but enjoys it. A combo of narrative tension and sexual tension that had me metaphorically on the edge of my seat. Especially notable for the dom point-of-view.

Huang Shaotian/Everyone 3k Gut

Free space, time to plug my own fic. I like characters being turned on in situations where they can’t immediately take care of it, and I like Huang Shaotian and his energetic spirit, so these two appreciations are at the heart of this piece. Other self-indulgences include exhibitionism, a strong network of intimate non-romantic relationships among the pros, and Huang Shaotian literally managing to talk himself off. Tang Hao/Zhang Jiale Heart 2k

Zhang Jiale makes up with Tang Hao after a fight, including an unorthodox gesture of reconciliation (this is where the “sex toys” bingo square comes from). ZJL’s characterization is a highlight here– he really seems like he’s let go of much of his tension. Now, I am always a big fan of sexual tension and hatefucking, so TH/ZJL is a great pairing, but this one, despite the odds, manages to be a relatively healthy relationship! Congrats to them! lol

Some teen-rated tentacle fluff. Everybody has tentacles, and Zheng Xuan spends time with his team and revisits his boundaries for his tentacles. Part of the “Blue Rain as Family” tag. It’s both thoughtful worldbuilding to make tentacles just an everyday thing and heartwarming team fluff.

4k Tang Rou/Sun Xiang Gut

It’s in some ways ironic and in some ways fitting to classify this as a “kink exploration” fic, given that the author mentioned they chose not to tag it as such in part “because sx is not self-aware”. In this piece, Tang Rou and Sun Xiang have sex in a back alley, and Sun Xiang likes it much more than he expected. Sun Xiang’s characterization manages to nail that confidence that I’m so proud of him for discovering, while still a hot dose of “embarrassed but I like this”. Tang Rou’s lack of self-consciousness, too, is attractive.

Fang Rui/Ye Xiu 7k Head

In this setting, team captains have sex with new team members as a form of bonding. After Fang Rui transfers to Team Happy, he and Ye Xiu get to know each other better. Now, sex can be about so many more things than satisfying arousal, and this fic speaks to a part of human emotion that isn’t often seen in fanfic. There’s discussion of asexuality, and they both enjoy the sex they’re having. This is one of the more unique pieces on the list. If you want an unconventional read, give it a shot.

6k Sun Xiang/Ye Xiu Gut

Set during the China Glory training period, Sun Xiang is so desperate for Ye Xiu’s approval that he digs himself into a hole (and keeps digging). Of course, this is not how *he* sees the situation, because he hates Ye Xiu, and that’s all there is to it, of course. It’s like a high-suspense trainwreck of “can he make this worse?” Fun fact: this fic inspired me to try writing fanfiction, because I simply Could not stop thinking about it. I will read (and almost certainly enjoy) anything with Sun Xiang praise kink, and this is a classic.

Zhang Jiale/Zhang Xinjie 3k Gut

Zhang Xinjie experiments with doing Zhang Jiale’s hair. This one’s a nonsexual kink piece that creates such a vibrant mood. It’s a good comfort read. I am generally very much in favor of Zhang Jiale relaxing and receiving kindness, and this hits that spot. (As well as the “zhang xinjie dom” agenda.) This piece was made to be enjoyable even if you aren’t familiar with canon, so if you’ve forgotten who Zhang Xinjie is (Tyranny’s cleric, master tactician) don’t let that stop you!

2k Qiao Yifan/Ye Xiu Head

Qiao Yifan, magically bound to Wang Jiexi, is tasked with killing Ye Xiu. The “magic used for sex/kink” may not be the kinkiest aspect of it– to me, that’s the power dynamics, but you all know I’m biased. The worldbuilding in this short little piece is soooo vibrant, too. The setting’s a bit fucked up, the ship is QYF/YX, and QYF starts by trying to kill him, so what more do you really need?

Han Wenqing/Ye Xiu (Desert Dust/One Autumn Leaf flavor)  Head 2k

Ye Xiu, a mage titled the Battle God, challenges Desert Dust, demon and the King of Fighting, for world-typical stakes for the winner. I love pieces with more of a story than we see, and this piece leaves me with a dozen questions and a desire to see more. There’s magic and rules the magic operates on, and the context of their motivations gives you a fascinating little glimpse into what could easily be a rich and exciting long story. Of course, the worldbuilding isn’t to the detriment of the smut; the two go hand in hand.

Chu Yunxiu/Dai Yanqi 2k Heart

Dai Yanqi propositions Chu Yunxiu for a hookup. Dai Yanqi is such a sweet, energetic young woman in this one, which is a nice complement to Chu Yunxiu’s weariness. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she gets Chu Yunxiu eager and into it. It’s nice to see the two of them have an uncomplicated good time! The spice adds definition to the sweetness.

Wang Jiexi/Other, Fang Shiqin/Wang Jiexi 15k Heart

Here’s another intriguing sex worldbuilding one. All Glory teams have a patron deity of some sort. Naturally, a deity demands offerings, and the captain gives the most. There’s no Hurt/Comfort tag on this fic (there are, however, “Extremely Dubious Consent”, “Multiple Penetration”, “Sex Pollen adjacent”, and “Forced Orgasm”, among others) but it feels… hurt/comforty, somehow. This fic takes place in that world of difference between “saying yes” and “wanting it”. Although this piece bruises him up a bit, it bandages the wounds at the end.

I’m going to assume you have already explored the other fics bu the authors in the first rec post I made- everything by @redfacesmiley, @books-and-omens , @racketghost , and Drawlight/ripeteeth is a stunner. Also dig through equestrianstatue and @darcylindbergh for real gems.

When I’m reading I find a fic I like, dig through all the author’s other fics, then look at the author’s bookmarks because I figure if they wrote something I like that much, they saved things I’ll like too.

His new friends are in no mood for charity when his ex shows back up- while Crowley might be able to forgive Az, the townspeople have a harder time with the bastard that broke dear Anthony’s heart.

If I’ve had a bad day and need to cheer up, I read this book! Omens sweet story.

…And if I’m in an emotionally stable place I will read this angsty heartbreaker. So beautiful, just so good.

Anyone interested in some fic recs? Here’s a few ones I recently read and am enjoying — I prefer long, slow burn stories heavy on characterization/character study with adult protagonists, so that’s what’s on the list! As always, check the ratings and mind the tags; almost all are M for themes/language and a few have E chapters. This list is not exhaustive, and doesn’t include many older works, so if you have q’s or want more recs, ask away!

Blood Orange by @flyingjemsaucer is my happy place right now (the author has other lovely EraserMight fics too). It’s a wonderful AU with orange farmer/vendor Toshinori and teacher Aizawa. This one is interesting and different because Toshinori is un-injured and Aizawa has his post-PLF disabilities. As a bonus, this fic also has great DadMight and Dadzawa, with David Shield and married Mic/Midnight as the best friends of the lead pair.

Closed Fist and Bleeding Heart by MoonlightAndDust (who I believe also wrote this AU twitfic). Just all around good, canon universe, angsty EraserMight.

EraserMic

Nine Lives by machiroads (also check out the author’s Naruhata Noir, which ties in to Vigilantes lore). This one is set during Aizawa’s canon post-war hospital stay and features a super fun Mirko, snarky little shithead [affectionate] Shinso, and good OCs. Honestly, the EraserMic romance is just one part of the story, and that’s fine because it’s full of other things.

And When It All Goes to Hell by @purekesseltrash (also check out the author’s Rooftop Necromancy series for a band AU). Both of these fics are examples of an author’s other hobbies/interests making the fic truly special. This one is a hockey AU and it’s great! Filled with lots of cool details, it cuts between the teenage rooftop trio and the adult Hizashi and Shouta reuniting after 10+ years to figure their shit out. Knowing some hockey stuff helps, but isn’t required at all — the drama is still there! And if you want to read about 1A students in this hockey AU, then you’re in luck because the author has that too (though I have yet to read it myself only because I prefer adult protagonists).

Naive Melody by @aconstantstateofbladerunner. I also like many of the author’s other works including For Kurou and Dekugate, but I think this one deserves more attention for its terrifying premise and action sequences. It keeps the core “hero society” concept from MHA and then goes and does its own thing. Also, I love the Talking Heads references — you KNOW how I get with my 80s new wave music!

Bones of You by @thoughtfulraven. A really sweet story set in the canon universe, with BFFs Inko and Mitsuki and a closer look at Toshinori’s mental state.

Nighteye/All Might

Happiness by @puddinginthemix made me like Nighteye, and that’s a feat. Set in the canon universe with canon events…I’ll just say this one made me tear up a bit.

DadMight and gen All Might

Living Well by @krisingtons is super sweet. If you want some DadMight fluff, this is where you go. (I also happen to really like the Quirk Development Theories series, especially the OC that pairs off with Inko in one of the later stories because they all work together so well to support Izuku).

Learning to Trust by @siriusfan13, a longtime favorite. Not only is this a fantastic look at All Might in the year before he agreed to work at UA, but the author links some amazing DadMight/genMight fic recs at the end of (most) chapters.

Kacchako & also Hawks (WhaaAAaa????)

Toy Soldiers by AJLenoire is a bit of a wild card on this list, but it’s really well-written. The multiple subplots within the Kacchako plot and the Hawks/OC plot are all fun, and the Hawks/OC relationship is a blast.

Thank you for the ask and your very kind words! ❤ It's so nice to hear that people like my rec posts because they really do take a surprisingly large amount of time to put together. Anyway, I'm not complaining & this is a lot of fun for me, so on to the recs!

I struggled a bit with how to define "underrated" and I think everybody has their own ideas of what exactly that means. Also, the Stucky ship has been around for more than a decade (even longer if you count the comics), so creative output and reader interest will fluctuate and ultimately decline over time. A Stucky fic posted after 2019--no matter how insanely good it is--will never do the numbers it would have done in the Golden Age of 2014-2018. So, for the purpose of this list, a fic written in 2016 with 15K hits or less does qualify as underrated, while a fic posted in 2021 with 10-15K would not.

Also, as always, this list is by no means an exhaustive one.

Author's summary: Bucky’s crying before he’s off the boat and he’s the least surprised out of anyone to realize it.

He’s always been a softie, a leaky faucet, and the war hasn’t changed that, so he doesn’t know why the sob that smacks him startles him bad enough that he grips the strap of his bag doubly hard, ready to swing it around like a battering ram, ready to find that cloying, invisible enemy. He’s not being ambushed, on his belly in the muck and camellias, cypress hanging low, moonlight casting an eerie smile upon Lake Como like it’s enjoying the hell out of muffled gunshots and the wet grunt of lifeblood spattering onto the undergrowth.

That’s done. He’s safe.

An AU in which Bucky--minus one arm--comes back from the war and Steve never got to go, and never became Captain America. A scrappy little story that is at once full of emotion and yet completely unsentimental. This story socked me on the jaw, tackled me to the ground, and then sat on me while twisting, twisting, twisting my arm behind my back. It also has one of my favorite descriptions of the SteveBucky dynamic I've ever read: "They’re all roughed up, the two of em, a pair of old marble statues weathered by time and harsh touches, but they know each other’s chinks and foibles and can side-step them with grace while still treating the other about as delicately as they’d handle a sack of potatoes." !!! Hollywoodland by romanticalgirl | E, 69K

Author's summary: In 1930s Hollywood, the world is run on the studio system. Stars are told who to date, what to wear, what to say, and how to look pretty doing it. The only way you can really do what you want is if you don't get caught.

Steve's dating Peggy, which works out because she's married to Sam, even though it's not legal. But it's the perfect cover for the fact that Steve's gay. He's managing just fine skirting the system to find companionship, but then he meets James Barnes and life gets a lot more complicated.

If you know anything about me and my love for Golden Age Hollywood, then you won't be surprised that this pushes all of my buttons. This is loosely inspired by the real life relationship of Cary Grant and Randolph Scott (the exact nature of which we will probably never know, but let's just say it was most likely not strictly platonic). Is the world the author created here entirely realistic? No--and it's not intended to be. While it is indeed rooted in many of the horrible realities that queer people and POC have faced in the past (and are still facing today), it's a slightly kinder version of it that allows for a hopeful, if not a strictly happy ending in the traditional sense. A sumptious story with gorgeous art.

make progress together by frankoceansmoonriver | E, 24K

Author's summary: He feels like Steve’s mistress. He feels hollowed out. He feels like a jammed gun still trying to go off. When he’s not with Steve he convinces himself he’s ruining Steve’s life, and though he tries, he’s too selfish to stop. When he’s with Steve, he’d fight God himself to keep it, this tangible perfection that makes him drunk and anchors him in ways he did not know existed.

Or, the one where they both survived the war, Bucky loves Steve now, has loved Steve since he was fifteen, and the year is 1945.

This is a story that I have reread many, many times because it is the perfect wish fulfillment fic for me. It's the slightly unrealistic, or one could also say: optimistic version of what I imagine would have happened had Steve and Bucky both survived the war. That's not to say that this fic doesn't have its very angsty moments, but ultimately, this is a story about love and hope triumphing in the face of adversity, and sometimes you just want to see good things happen to good people. I know some readers may find the formatting and the non-linear structure challenging, but this is a beautiful story and I really urge you all to give it a try!

I'll Light Your Way Home series by BeaArthurPendragon | M-E, 69K, 5 parts

Author's summary: Two lost Vietnam vets find each other in a Hell's Kitchen gay bar one hot September night. This is how they find their way home.

A pattern emerges! Can you tell I'm really into (No Powers) AUs set in the early to mid 20th century? Well, here's another one, but we're actually moving into second half of the century, specifically to 1969, for this one! Bea is quite possibly my favorite Stucky writer and I have recommended her stories many times to anybody who will listen to me. It's debatable whether or not she actually counts as "underrated", I guess, but it is my personal opinion that her fics should have ten times the kudos/comments/hits they do and that she deserves to be up there with the "big names". This story in particular just completely won over my heart with its gorgeous (but not ostentatious) writing, its confident and mature characterizations, and great eye for historical detail. I *cannot* recommend her fics enough. /unabashed fangirl moment over.

I've spent a good 30 minutes debating with myself which one of these two I should include here, and then I just threw up my hands and said "why not both? Both is good!" So here they are, two beautifully written mid-length full-arc (childhood to sometime past TWS, where they diverge from canon) fics that I love both equally. These are standalone stories and are not set in the same universe, but they do read and feel like companion pieces to each other because both stories are told through the lense of Steve and Bucky's respective artistic sensibilities and how they use their art as a framework to make sense of the world. Misplaced Pencils gives you artist Steve who, from a very young age on, has always tried to understand the world by taking it apart into its visual components & falling back on a fixed set of questions that help him to categorize and compartmentalize the people he encounters and the emotions he feels for them (just like he will later do in other areas of his life). Only that there is of course one person who's always refused to fit neatly into just one of his categories. and our worlds... on the other hand, gives you storyteller Bucky who's constantly talking, singing, writing. Who, in the end, can't help himself but narrate even his own fall and who is later delightfully affronted by his own narrative arc in a "if I had been the one in charge, I would've written it better!" way. Both of these stories are very dear to my heart and they deserve a million more hits.

I’m not sure why Yuuta x Toge is not reasonable.. I mean they are the same age, right? 

Well Gojou x Utahime they disapprove on the forced straightness grounds, I mean even if they ship stsg, Getou’s dead, and Gojou could be bi… but whatever icky woman is icky.  

I mean I disapprove of shipping Gojou in general, because I think all Gojou ships are either misogyny or queerphobia, because he’s too awful to force onto other people… The dumb fascist is the only one that can be punished thusly, they are equally awful as people ;)

I guess the ships between Megumi and Toge, or Gojou and Nanami or Ijichi are pedo ships, because Toge is a year older than Megs and Gojou is at least a year older than either of them. Or is Gojou x Ijichi just simple abuse? I’d call it that. Oh, and I checked Nanami x Ijichi and that’s just clearly pedo stuff, Nanami is one year older. (Honestly this ship could be really nice, Ijichi could use a guy who can stand up for himself and actually is thoughtful)

What more can I say… Generally there being just two Sukuna ships is disappointing, people have poor aesthetic taste. No Kenny ship is also sad, especially seeing how popular Toge is and well that guy gets barely any development in the story, he’s kinda boring to me. 

As to Yuuji’s ships. GoYuu falls under Gojou shouldn’t be shipped, period. The ships with Megumi I get. Nanami and Chousou make sense too, even if they’re not my jam. But the ship with Getou… every time I see it, it makes me lose faith in humanity a little.

A Waking Nightmare

I feel like I have to add this one to the list. First, because it's the first ever multi-chapter fic I've ever completed before. Second, it was the first big fic I started in this fandom as well and honestly marks my true start as a bigger participant in this fandom (as well as a writer in general). Incomplete list of thoughts after venturing into booktok:

- Personally, I don't think I'm ever going to be an annotating reader. At least not on my first read through. If I find a book that dazzles me enough to read through it a second time to analyze and study it, sure. But the booktok trends of perfectly tabbed books just isn't for me.

- the rapid-fire recommendation trend of just holding up a book saying yes or no tells me nothing. Instant dismissal.

- colleen hoover-- just, no.

- the trend where you stand a book spine down to eventually flip it over to reveal the title often takes too long. Fun trend, but the hesitation lasts a little longer than my patience allows. You get five seconds, then I'm moving on.

- Trope lists are good. Gives me the highlights to see if anything catches my fancy-- I can look up the premise on my own if it does.

- reading weird/outlandish/dumb text aloud is chefs kiss content. More please. I wanna see how awful some content can be and still be published. Gives me confidence as a writer.

- i need to curate my algorithm. Right now I'm seeing a LOT of homogenous content. Would prefer more diversity, and actual book recommendations. Anyone got any trusted content creators I should follow? Y'all probably know what I like by now lol.

- there's a lot more mlm recs out there than wlw. Makes me sad. And frustrated. Noticed this on ggodreads as well. Unhelpful. (That said, did you see that hayley kiyoko wrote a book?)

- i wish some fic authors would publish some original content. Like, when I'm looking for novels, especially in the dearth of wlw content, I find myself wanting more of the kind of stuff I've read on ao3, just with less fandom so people don't get sued. Yknow? That's what I wanna read.

@baronessblixen, @welsharcher, @o6666666, @ghostbustermelanieking, @lokisgame, @mldrgrl, @tinglingworld, @sigritandtheelves, and @kateyes224 write THE BEST short but complex fluff imaginable. The shorter the better for me, because it leaves a lot of room for me to fill-in with my imagination. (And don't forget yourself~, heheheh.)

@enigmaticdrblockhead rips my heart out and sews it back in with her gut-wrenching short fics on humanity's cruelties. I always cite her fic Ascension as the one that makes me cry every time.

@suitablyaggrieved does great at short fic, too. Her bent is less about fluff and more about dread and horror~.

In a similar vein is @dreamingofscully, whose works are longer but have that teeter-totter between weighted rumination and blissful happiness; and @wtfmulder, who is one of the best writers for "male voice" (making three differently brooding male character sound distinctly different from one another) and does the best Mulder crack headcanons and memes.

astronaught writes like David Duchovny for me (which is a high compliment)-- ex. "He needed to get out of L.A. He needed to stay in L.A. There was a comforting nausea to the unreality here. Funhouse, Pleasure Island, Lotus-Eater nausea. The subtle horror of a museum of plastic toys. Violently happy faces fading from a material that wasn’t meant to age. //Everything was a bit grotesque in L.A. and so was everything out of L.A. Who said that Hollywood lied?"

Jo_B writes a complicated, heartwarming Mulder who is relieved Scully's effortlessly sees his humanity and good intentions.

defnotmeyo writes both the best crack (heartwarming and fun and realistic) and angst short fic. She's gone from Tumblr; but some of her fics can still be found.

@melforbes is another fic author that made me ALMOST sob (but definitely cry) with her seaglass blue fic (Ao3)-- that and, again, Ascension as mentioned above.

Lapsed_Scholar wrote the best collection of Requiem variations (Mulder doesn't leave due to various snags in his departure, all involving Scully in some way.) But all of her work is FANTASTIC (as are these other authors, too!) I always pair up anything Lapsed wrote with --

Anything Apostrophic (i.e. @mappingthexfiles), @seek-its-opposite, @wtfmulder, @sigritandtheelves, and @onpaperfirst touches is always gold. They write IWTB/S11 so well; and as a "stop after S8 the canonical ending" fan, they make me love anything beyond it-- and those aren't not even including their other fics. I always think of Apostrophic's "miniseries" fics Agua Mala-Arcadia-Alpha... stupendous work.

Can't forget the multi-chapter, shot-in-the-veins of 90s grounded...ness that is @cecilysass, @aloysiavirgata, @amplifyme, and @slippinmickeys (though she also loves to dabble in AUs that are wildly entertaining.) You FEEL like you're in the X-Files era reading their work.

For Torture!Mulder (yep, it's a thing) there's Vickie Moseley (Gossamer, Ao3) and Donna-- I prefer Donna's work, but sometimes Vickie NAILS it.

For Gossamer/older fics I reread obsessively (and they're famfic, ngl):

Suki Tawdry's The Way Things Are (Mulder and Scully have a one-night stand aligning w/ Gillian's pregnancy. I skip Chapter 12-- personal preference-- but the BANTER and sarcasm on Scully is top-tier. And Mulder's journey as a slowly morphing family man is... chef's kiss. Not to mention Skinner, Maggie, Melissa, even a well-intentioned but annoying Bill, etc.) and LuvTheBeez's Snow (S5? Mulder and Scully are married and expecting a giant baby... and become hostages in a stick up. The in-control thought processes, banter, and intelligent planning on both their parts while keeping it completely lighthearted is also the best) AND Jamie Greco's Breathing (on the way to Scully's Lamaze class, dialogue only, AMAZING characterization of Mulder and Scully. All of Jamie Greco's other fics do the same-- Scarlet has Mulder high on a hallucinogen and seeing Scully as an angel.)

I'm plowing through RocketMan's works on Gossamer-- WOW are some amazing. Chef's kiss. Not finished yet (taking my time-- just reached second page), but I'll probably make a separate author shoutout when I'm done~.

I haven't even BEGUN to touch the fill-in or fix-it fics that span the series (or at least one season of it) that are incredibly impressive-- like @darwin-xf, @scenes-in-between, and touchstonea's Odyssean epics-- but I've got to cut this list short because... honestly, my list would be endless; and I have not even BEGUN to list them all. If I haven't listed anyone, it's not for lack of trying or because of any attempt at snubbing. I, a mere mortal, can only do so much. XDDD

I do a bit of everything writing now, so I will link a fic for every type of reader I can imagine! I've been at this for nearly a year now, so I have a bit of a collection of fics.

Hunger Pains - An angsty mess delving into the seemingly highly underutilized aspect of the great war, that being the energon shortages. There are two endings to this fic, and fun fact! It was the first fic I ever wrote that I felt was actually good!

Grant Me This At Least - My first fic in a larger series and the introduction to around fifteen other associated works! I recommend this one not because it stands on its own, but because it leads into a far larger universe with copious amounts of worldbuilding. So if its ever a long night and you are looking for a read, I offer this.

Whispers in the Dark - Part of the AU for the fic listed directly above, this was my first ever actual ship centric fic. I usually stick to platonic or familial relationships, but I have preferences too and this is a bitter-sweet thing for those of you who like that.

The Many Lives of Optimus Prime - My first longform fic that is still in progress and planned to go on for a LONG time yet. This is a drawn out story which, as said in the title, follows Op during his various reincarnations and worldbuilds while still keeping to canon. I am very very proud of this fic.

To Serve His Will - My take on Shattered Glass. This has not been updated in MONTHS but once the inspiration hits me I am sure I will get back to it. I was in a weird mood writing this one, but its a fun read if you like blurred lines!

Its been a ton of fun writing fics and I hope to continue doing so for a long time yet! I will be sure to spread the love around!

Okay, these are just my personal favs, not even necessarily the ones I think might be the best-written, and I'm also excluding co-authored fic because that would be a very different list! (For one thing, Amateur Cartography, with Reg....) 1. straight from your heart (Stucky) - lots of people seem to like this one (thank you!) and I do too - I love recovering!Bucky stories, I loved the premise (it was written for a fest prompt), and I love the idea of Steve and Bucky working out what they want to incorporate, and play with, and reclaim, as far as identities (and, okay, some kink; it's me!). 2. Like Sugar (Evanstan; series) - okay, this is probably cheating because it's a whole series, but I can't separate them! This might be the thing people know me for most, maybe, and it was at the time the longest and most detailed story I'd ever written, and one of those that was (mostly) easy to write - words and scenes just turned up and flowed. I sometimes go back and reread my writing and am honestly impressed by myself. I do love this whole giant thing. 3. tempt me, tease me (leave me breathless) & (baby won't you please) run your fingers through my hair (both Evanstan, both sort of gentle kink) - okay, this is also kind of cheating, because they're two separate stories - except they're sort of linked, in my head? They have vaguely similar premises, about Chris discovering some things about Seb's preferences, and love confessions, and kink, and comfort, and...I don't know, they just have a similar 'feel' to my writer-brain. They both have specific lines that I've put on "top ten favorite sentences I've written" lists before, and I love my writing at this point. 4. never mind the why and wherefore (Johnny Storm/TJ Hammond Fantastic Four/Political Animals no-powers AU crossover) - this is an odd random one but I genuinely love it! In the category of "stories I never expected to write"...and then friends made me think about it...and then suddenly it practically wrote itself and I had 45k of story. One of the best and most unexpected and consequently wonderful writing experiences I've ever had, plus of course TJ deserves all the happiness! 5. Know That It's True (Cherik, X-Men: First Class era) - pulling out a real old-school one: this was my first-ever X-Men fic! Well, to be fair, that depends on how you count - it's the first one I started writing, but then I stopped and wrote and finished something else short, and then went back to this one! These days my writing style has evolved a bit, and there're some things I'd do differently - but the sheer sense of fun to it, the absolute joy, the "oh gosh YES" rush of feels while writing, posting, being so nervous about it as a new(ish) writer...oh, I love it. And I tumbled into so many communities and friendships and fan events and fests and, oh, the shared love - really, without this, I don't know where I'd be. I’ve been wondering recently about how people find fanfics. so i’m going around asking some of my favourite authors: what is your preferred way of finding new fics to read?

Do you find them from recommendations, whether that be from friends or social media and who do you find gives the best recs? Do you just read the works of some of your favourite authors? What about their bookmark lists? Do you go searching by looking at all the works under your favourite tags and if so, what are they?

AO3 Tagging : I have a lot of friends in the fandom who enjoy different things, so I'll always ask for "recs" but generally I find that the best to find what I want is through the AO3 tagging system. AO3 is this really cool tool where you can tailor your own adventure, right? I love to be surprised, so I generally make use of the "exclude" rather than the "include." That way I can be surprised while still making sure it won't have anything I might not be... into. AND IF I STILL STUMBLE UPON ONE I WILL JUST CLICK OUT and go live the rest of my life in peace. I don't have a favorite tag...Depends on my mood. I'm currently hard into baby Harry with Jeggy OR wolfstar.

Tumblr : Sometimes I'll stumble upon fun excerpts on Tumblr that will make me want to read that fic, so I'll just... go there and see what's up.

I don't have any "favorite" author. Obviously, since I write with @greenvlvetcouch I love their writing (I will wax poetics about it forever), BUT. But I think the beauty of being an author is the opportunity to explore all kinds of stuff, and there are some fics Green wrote that I wouldn't read just 'cuz it's not my thing. Same with... all my authors friends actually. There are a lot I love, and a few I'm like "nope, but you rock on." Just like I would expect people who like what I write to only read the ones that they vibe with...

I don't love social media recommendations. I find it a little strange to have "favorite" authors who can "do no wrong" or who you would "lay your life down" for or "read anything they write." That tends to start the cycle of worshipping that creeps me out. IF I find an author I love, I'll go through all their fics and pick the ones I like, and I'll read all of these ones. I'll go through their bookmarks and picks the ones I like there, too (sometimes. I often forget).

I have a system but the problem is that often I'll be in bed thinking "I just don't know", and I have 135778 fics downloaded but I somehow don't want any so I'll just open one of my random 984 tabs open and start and hope for the best.

I really like anything that inthesquare writes, they have a very specific way or writing MCD that sort of makes me want to lay on the floor and sob, and I found them on accident while scrolling through AO3.

do you have favorite inheritance fics? i’ve been struggling to find them

Yeah! I have a handful! Tbh, I also struggle a bit to find IC fics that I like, though that's largely because I don't like either of the 2 main ships. (IC has a lot of oc and crossover fics too, which aren't my personal preference either.) Also, there was a several year stretch when I wasn't keeping up with the fandom, so some of my recs are quite old and no doubt I've missed some more recent stories. Maybe I'll update this list if I find some more favorites!

Katrina and Roran and Carn by LordGrimwing

This is a series of three fics exploring an AU where Carn lives and eventually comes to live with Roran and Katrina in Carvahall. I like the premise a lot and the fics are very sweet!

You, Me, And The Wardens Across The Hall by Chapeau_42

A modern AU where the new generation of Riders are all college roomates together. I go back to this fic on the regular. It's simple but very enjoyable fun and the characterization feels excellent.

First Day in the New Hometown by Chapeau_42

This one is unfinished, but still worth while in my opinion. Again, I love the characterization. Murtagh is invited to stay in Carvahall to protect the village while Roran is away. The premise is engaging and it establishes some interesting interactions!

Shackled By Blood by purplehairedwonder

This one is also unfinished and is rather old. It's a bit harder to write a rec for because I read it during my IC phase some years ago so I don't remember it perfectly. But it always stuck in my mind for having especially good narration and story. It's an AU focused on Murtagh that diverges after the end of Brisingr. The unfinished end is a bit of a cliffhanger, so don't read if you can't deal with that, but I at least found the concepts compelling enough to be well worth it, despite being incomplete.

Speaking of old! This one's on deviantart of all places. But I remembered these fics so vividly and fondly that I unearthed them for myself the other day, so I think I'd be remiss not to rec them. This author wrote a fair few fics, a lot of them focused on Murtagh growing up with Tornac. This one is my personal favorite where Murtagh is very young and still getting used to Tornac, very sweet.

No doubt I'm forgetting some good ones of the myriad IC fics I read years ago, but alas I have an awful memory lol. I may update with more eventually!

(Also. At the risk of sounding vain, I want to rec a couple of my fics. I think they're worth while! My Love is a relationship study of Murtagh and Thorn and the bond they formed during their struggles in Uru'baen. It's older, but I still find it strong. The Half Dead is my most recent fic, involving my post canon story line. Murtagh and King Orrin stumble into a chance encounter and find an unexpected understanding while trying to mitigate any danger they've ended up in.)

You're back, Mari by Anonymous. i hope you all expected this one. this is the mentioned one on no.17. im not sure how many trigger warnings i need considering this entire fic is so infamous i'd be shocked if someone didn't know. i don't want to risk spoiling it so just look at the tags. i was debating putting the sequel on here but decided against it. after all, the absolutely visceral reaction the pursuit au can garner from the fandom after just being mentioned probably has enough potential for a case study.

The Classic You’ve Heard Of But Somehow Haven’t Read Yet: The Waiting Game by Anonymous

What you need to know going in:

A classic if I’ve ever read one! This fic is a gorgeous one-shot that sees Galadriel and Sauron just on the cusp of the 4th Age, after Sauron is defeated by Frodo. Galadriel is preparing to leave for Valinor, and is visited by him for a final meeting. The melancholy; the knowledge of all the Ages they’ve been at odds, only to come to the end for a final goodbye… it’s stunningly sad, and breathtakingly beautiful. A must-read.

The AU You Need to Immerse Yourself In Because, Well, Wow: Beautiful Creature of Darkness by @pursuitseternal

What you need to know going in:

It’s a Phantom-inspired fic, y’all! Phantom of the Opera, that is. Set in the 1st Age, Galadriel chafes under her brother Finrod’s overbearing rule in Dol Guldur when she becomes enchanted by a mysterious, magnetic presence. Three guesses as to who it is. 😉 Galadriel becomes increasingly drawn to a very persuasive and persistent Sauron, despite the darkness that shrouds him — even as an unnamed threat shadows her brother’s kingdom. If you’re a fan of Phantom, this is a fun read for the Gothic romance and well-drawn parallels to the Leroux/Weber favorite. I’m intrigued to see where it goes!

The Complete But Never Forgotten Masterpiece: Shine and Lady of the Seas by eye_of_a_cat

What you need to know going in:

Another eye of a cat classic! For me, this series (and yes, you definitely should read both) was the first “Halbrand makes Galadriel her armor in Armenolos” fic. And, like all of eye of a cat’s works, BOTH fics are absolute bangers. I mean… do I need to say much more than he makes Gal her armor and Cat wrote it? 😂 I don’t think I do, but just in case, here’s what I’ll add: terrific sexual tension that’s well, well-rewarded in the 2nd fic in the series, and it’s all Sauron’s POV, so expect possessive, awestruck, utterly beguiled (and beguiling) deliciousness. You’re welcome.

The WIP That Will Wreck You (In the Best Way): Pour Your Light In Me And Watch Me Dissolve by @maironiiel

What you need to know going in:

This S1-set fic gives a repentant-but-struggling Sauron in Numenor, simultaneously set ill at ease by Galadriel and her insistence he join her in the campaign to reclaim the Southlands, and irrevocably bewitched by her. But it’s not just Galadriel who calls to him—the Valar do, too, sending Ossë and others to appeal to him to return to the light in full; to Valinor for judgment. The result is a scintillating slow burn with promise for more, with a lovely expansion and interpretation of what we saw in the show, particularly in how the Valar and other Maia might react or appeal to this version of Mairon. A part 1 with one chapter left to go before part 2, I’m curious to see how this story evolves.

The Can't Stop Consuming No Matter What Time It Is Fic: se vis pacem, para bellum by @nenyabusiness

What you need to know going in:

This is another recent sub I added to my rotating reading list, so it’s just starting to heat up, but when it’s a John Wick AU, you know to expect a thrill ride right from the start—and the fic doesn’t disappoint! If you’re not familiar with John Wick, here’s all you need to know: Galadriel is a retired, renowned assassin known as The Daughter from a family of deadly assassins. She’s drawn from her retirement when her brother, Finrod, is killed by a rival crime family controlled by Sauron. In an attempt to curb her quest for vengeance, Sauron turns to subterfuge… and masquerades as an unwitting ally to gain her trust. Where they go from there? 👀 I’m excited to see, but so far, this is a perfect premise for this ETL pair to keep those thrills coming.

I'm a Harry Potter fan so would love to read more!

Arthuriana comes in and out of fashion, and you're in luck because it seems to be coming back in again. And here I am with my useless MA in Medieval Studies to offer some suggestions.

The obvious rec is Legendborn, which is a recent YA with a 16-yo Black heroine and all the knights of the round table reborn (sort of)

I can't do an Arthuriana rec list without including The Mists of Avalon, which follows the story from the POV of Morgan Le Fay. (The author was a monster, so if you prefer not to read books by genuinely terrible people, maybe skip this one. But it's an important one in the genre)

A science fiction/corporate take is Once and Future, and a couple I haven't read but have heard good things about are The Other Merlin and The Crystal Cave. And you can find a couple lists of arthur books HERE and HERE.
