(That moment when some good anime finally come out but I don’t wanna watch them because they may be on Toonami at some point and rewatching anime for Toonami does kinda take some of the fun out of it but then Toonami’s like ‘we have nothing planned for the next two months, have double Naruto Shippuden’, which I get because Housing Complex C just came out and it’s four episodes long and that makes it the perfect length to be a Halloween marathon and you don’t want to start a new show just to interrupt it with a Halloween Marathon but like there’s nothing really to look forward to as far as existing anime and it’s kinda frustrating since a lot of the new anime they’ve made have been mediocre or bad and I just want some guaranteed quality.

Just looking at anime that have new seasons that haven’t been on Toonami we have:

SSSS.Dynazenon, My Hero Academia (Season just started but still technically counts), Mob Psycho 100, Made in Abyss (Same as MHA), Jojo (scooped up by Netflix so not expecting it just worth noting), Food Wars, Demon Slayer, Megalobox, Pop Team Epic (See MHA)

And then as far as things that haven’t aired on there before but REALLY should given their general connection or even promotional materials that have aired on Toonami we have things like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man

So just as a way to vent I’ll list my top wanted things and the things that I’m baffled haven’t been on the block yet

Demon Slayer and Mob Psycho 100 are kind of the odd ones out given how long their second seasons have been out and there was even a rerun of Mob Psycho Season 1 that everyone thought was going to lead to season 2 being announced for the block that just... didn’t happen

Megalobox and Dynazenon aren’t my favorite picks by any means but they do seem to gel really well with what the showrunners want for the block and I think they are going to be scooped up at some point when things cool down a bit

MHA, Pop Team Epic and Made in Abyss will also probably come at some point, like Toonami legit can’t keep its hands off MHA it’s basically its big moneymaker since it found out it can’t milk Dragon Ball endlessly, they got their hands on Made in Abyss at a good time right before season 2 was really being talked about so it kinda just kicked up the discussion again and that may mean there’s a deal to be made there but I don’t pretend to know how this shit works and Pop Team Epic is just a wild card in every sense so who knows.

Food Wars has a weird history with the block given how its seasons are broken up into some weird copyright mess so that’s kind of a toss-up whether they’re going to pursue that or not but it’s there should they decide it’s worth going after.

But as far as new series I’d like to see on there within the next year that could really give the block the shot in the arm it needs are Jujutsu Kaisen, (I mean come on the fucking movie advertised on the channel why is it not there) Chainsaw Man (just started so we’ll see about the news) and... believe it or not, Spy X Family, like it’s probably not something most people think of when they think of Toonami but it’s a popular show with some action, at least as much as some of the more chill shows that have been on there.

Ever since Dragon Ball Super ended and MHA’s seasons have been sparse, Toonami’s really kind of struggled to find a new flagship series and covid certainly didn’t help and it seems like they’re putting more effort into creating new shows rather than acquisitions but I think grabbing something with good press behind it already would probably give everything the boost it needs given none of the originals have really been able to get off the ground. I get there’s probably business reasons why creating new shows you have full rights to is probably easier/more profitable than trying to bump gloves with Netflix and Disney+ (the whole reason I didn’t mention Bleach) but that doesn’t do much good if nothing’s pulling in the numbers and we just kinda let the block sit on reruns and shows that are decades old. I’m thrilled One Piece is getting another shot I really am, but it can’t carry the block and if Toonami’s not going to pull the anime that are actually in current conversations then it’s going to get left behind, I respect that it’s trying to make that conversation rather than leech off of it but there needs to be a mix since production takes so long and as we’ve seen with shows like Shenmue and Black Lotus just doesn’t yield the results they’re looking for)

Ushijima Wakatoshi

Ushijima definitely knows you’re into anime + games

Until one day he walks into your room while you’re calling one of your friends to freak out about that specific game

Oikawa Tooru

Since practice finishes pretty late he usually goes to see you at your house at night, but tonight things wrapped up earlier - he’s excited to spend more time with you

You’ve finished up most of your homework so you’ve just been rewatching Attack on Titan since you’re super excited for the new season

You’re kinda distracted/have headphones on so you don’t hear your boyfriend knock on the front door. Your mom answers it and lets him in and he climbs the stairs

He can hear your fangirling (freaking out) over something as he walks towards your room

You jump in surprise when he opens the door, because you thought he would be a bit later but immediately release your pent up excitement

“Tooru just LOOK at him he’s such a bad ass like oh my gosh he literally has swords and he’s still running around slaying the MPs who have guns. God whenever he gets angry he looks so hot,” etc. etc.

You’re shoving your laptop in his face, showing him gifs and video of attack on titan, specifically the captain of the survey corps that you are obsessed with

Tooru gets it - for him its space, shitty alien films and astronomy. For you it’s video games and anime - or more specifically, handsome characters from said franchises

Even though he understand that it’s something you’re passionate about he still makes a whole show about whining how you’re in love with Levi Ackerman (lmao i still thirst over our favorite captain) instead of him

Tooru still somehow finds out you’re also reading reader insert fanfic and goes BERSERK with his pouting and whining - literally everyone and their mothers have heard his sob story about how “his darling y/n is leaving me for a short germaphobic asshole”

The rest of the team finds it hilarious - the end up pranking him by posting pictures of Levi in his school locker or texting them in the volleyball groupchat (Oikawa is Suffering™)

Makki and Mattsun get him a Levi keychain for his birthday and cackle when he chucks it violently into the nearest trash can

Miya Atsumu

Doesn’t really know you’re into anime/gaming at first

I don’t think that’s on purpose - Atsumu just has such a one track mind when it comes to volleyball and he’s always busy with practice

so he just kinda doesn’t really give all the anime merch in your room a second glance even though it’s a dead giveaway

I bet Atsumu secretly watches some superhero anime - probably shounen stuff like My Hero Academia, one punch man etc.

He probably starts to notice you’re into anime/games because you’ll play games on your phone/gaming device all the time

One day he notices you’re giggling + blushing while looking at your screen. He’s curious to he heads over to you when coach says they can have a break

Peeks over your shoulder because he wants to know what you’re playing - but instead he’s greeted by some 2D samurai guy called Harada Sanosuke asking you to marry him

“Huh, I didn’t know you were into this kinda stuff y/n” tries to sound playful but internally he is screaming / ?????? WOT I DIDN’T KNOW MY S/O WAS INTO OTOME GAMES

Atsumus pretty chill about it at first, he probably teases you a lot about playing the game but isn’t really bugged about it

I mean - he knows he’s attractive and why be jealous? You only really play the game when he’s busy and you don’t really let the game play seep into your dates/hangouts

But one time he walks in on you reading some ~spicy~ hakuouki x reader fanfic and he’s like are u serious

Like you were lowkey quiet screaming to yourself and muttering “omg omg omg” when he walked in and you definitely tried to close your laptop so he couldn’t see what was open in your browser

Matsukawa Issei

Look, Issei just wants a chill movie/tv show night where the two of you can bundle up on the couch and binge whatever anime you feel like

Has everything set up - this man is ready to go: snacks? he has all of your favorites, couch? filled with soft pillows + multiple pillows. Attire? Comfy sweatpants shirtless 🥵

Last time he chose the series for your binge sleepover so he let you choose what the two of you were gonna watch this time

Turns out you decided to watch Psycho-Pass - it seemed like a pretty cool show, he was down with the whole dystopia/psychological concept

Starts out pretty normal, is appreciating the action + mystery elements and is glad that you chose that show

About halfway through the anime you two decide to take a break - he goes to the kitchen to refill your snacks, leaving to stretch you back.

When he comes back with more food, he notices that you’re hunched over your phone, typing something

He sneaks up behind you after he puts the food down, “Whatcha reading there babe?” You squeak and try to hide your phone, but not before he sees the words kougami x reader typed into your tumblr search bar

Lit-rally exCuSE me what - he’s not mad (more amused than anything else) but he also kind wants to tease you (bc Mattsun is a little shit)

“Is that the reason you wanted to watch this show?” he asks playfully. “He’s pretty hot tho, I kinda agree with you there babe.”

Now that he’s released the floodgate, he can’t stop your occasional comments like “omg how does he look so GOOD when he’s punching someone” or “he could shoot me with his dominator and i’d still say thank you”

The thirst comments are kinda getting to him, so he decides to take things in a different direction

“Let me what I can show you with my dominator~” L M A O I’M SORRY THIS EXISTS

Suddenly you’re being pulled onto his lap, and pressed against his bare chest, Issei barely gives you time to adjust before he’s kissing you roughly, tongue plunging into your mouth

His hands wrap around your hips pressing your core closer to his own, and you can feel his hard-on pressing into your stomach

He’ll be sure to suck a dark hickey onto the side of your neck and his hands travel under your shirt, just to remind you who your real boyfriend is

House of Mouse: Max’s Embarrassing Date Review

Hello House Mouses and welcome back to the house of mouse. Another comission by Kev and my second House of Mouse for the valentine’s season. This time we’re not tackling a Valentine’s Episode necesarily, but a romantic one all the same as fan faviorite couple Max and Roxanne finally go on a date.  I always liked Max. Even as a kid when I wasn’t the biggest fan of “A Goofy Movie”, didn’t like the darker patches like the principals office scene or the Pete Hot tub scene.. though in hindsight both had legit greviances with Max... it just dosen’t make either less terrible as the principal still told an innocnet man who wasn’t responsible for what his kid did and was trying his best that his son was going to become a crminal because of one stupid but mostly harmless prank, and Pete.. is just an abusive, unlikeable and unlovable ass in both Goof Troop and Goofy Movie, and I hate how he treats his son, don’t blame his wife for leaving him or taking their daughter and dog, and am really sad he got custody of PJ somehow. And for the record this isn’t ALL petes, just this version. The rest are fine and just the right level of asshole. 

Point is despite my problems with the first film, I had none with the second and even now I like it due to having some really good ideas and concepts while also being gloirously rediclous due to the loveably dated X-Games element. While I do have a spot in my heart for the Dana Hill and Shaun Fleming versions, especially the latter once upon a christmas is awesome, Jason Marsden’s version is the best by the mile having the right amount of ego mixed with self doubt to make him likeable enough to brook him being an ass to his dad a lot. He’s a good character.. and it baffles me Disney NEVER uses him nowadays. No really, the last time he showed up was in twice upon a christmas and no one liked that because he was dating someone who wasn’t Roxanne just to rehash the same plot they’d already rehashed better in Extremley Goofy Movie. I REALLY need to rewatch that one. Hmm.... gonna see if I can squeeze that one into May or later in April. That’s for another time. 

But yeah while he’s at one of the disney parks, that’s it. The character just .. vanished, and hasn’t been brought back in any way shape or form. Though I could see either a Disney Plus reboot of goof troop or a goofy movie with max having his own kids. That could be intresting. Also bring Roxanne back as weirdly this episode i’m reviewing, a goofy movie and now her ducktales cameo are her ONLY apperances. 

Seriously I get she’s not the most fleshed out.. but then flesh her out. Like Max she’s crminally underused and while I get her absence as a character in the sequel, the plot really didn’t need her, he still could’ve been dating her off screen. Though clearly the two worked things out and tried again as this episode came out AFTER extremely did. But did this episode work out? Join me under the cut to find out. 

As i’ve decided is my standard for House of Mouse Episodes, shorts first, then wraparound, then Mickey Mouse live sex celebration. Though I will say i’ve picked up there are two kinds of formats for the show: They either use two of the longer Mouseworks shorts or just one close to 11 minute short, a medium one, and one of the little two minute segments. There might be a break from this in the future, we shall see but for now those ar ethe two standards. This time we have two longer shorts. 

Pluto’s Penthouse Sweet: 

I’ve mentioned in the past I dont’ really get why Pluto is part of Disney’s sensational six along with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Daisy. And I stand by that: While he’s had his own cartoons they just aren’t as entertaining and creative as MIckey’s or hilarous and relatable as Donald and Goofy’s. He’s just an average cartoon dog. He works fine in tandem with Mickey, but on his own he’s just nothing and his spot should be taken by pete, who while not a goodie all the time, again the goof troop version needs to step on a rake and fall into a well.. somehow. i didn’t think my insult through. Point is pete is better.  And this short isn’t BAD .. but to me it’s what some fans THINK the disney shorts are: Bland, maybe one or two good jokes but almost nothing new or intresting. As I found out last year, that’s far from the case, as a lot of the Donald shorts are still hilarious today and a lot of the mickey shorts are shockingly creative, like Thru The Mirorr where he goes .. well thru the mirror into a wonderland like world where all the inanaimate objects are alive and he can shrink and what not via astral projection, or Mickey’s Mechanical Man, which I sadly didn’t know about when I did the MIckey Birthday Special and for some reason isn’t on disne plus. In it Mickey creates a robot and has it box a monsterous looking gorillia. 

How has Mickey piloting this thing but giant sized against various kaiju been a thing yet? And if it has someone tell me. Seriously with all the comics and animated series how. I’d even settle for a Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse episode. Just bring this guy back. Point is there was far more invetnion than it seemed.. at least at first as it slowly died out as they went by the late 50′s. But Pluto just seemed even in their hayday like your standard pet gets into antics thing without the creative slapstick of tom and jerry or the likeablity of sylvester who never could get that asshole Tweety Bird. This is just weak sauce and whiel I could forgive the older shorts, as their from another time and likely lead to say Tom and Jerry... I can’t forgive this which was made probably in 1998 and released in 1999 originally. Comedy had evolved a LOT by that point and unlike the Goofy how to shorts, which are a format that is immortal and still evolved to match the times and felt fresh, these just feel stale and boring and like the last Pluto short I covered this one was a chore to sit through though not nearly AS bad. 

Still though the premise is about the same, Pluto’s left to his own devices, and finds a female dog, though in this case she’s VERY intrested in him. I”m also not entirley convinced she’s a dog, but instead one of Jumba’s experiments and that Lilo and Stitch later had to journey to.. wherever these shorts take place to fetch him. Or more likely the house of mouse. I mean Proud Family, Recess, American Dragon Jake Long and Kim Possible all take place int hat universe, why can’t house of mouse? Also tell me you wouldn’t watch an avengers style team consisting of Kim, Ron, Jake, Penny, Probably TJ, Lilo, Stitch and Donald Duck. If you wouldn’t i’d call you a liar because you would be. 

Seriously the eyes give her away.... just look at them. Very experimenty. But before Pluto can do it like they do on the discovery channel he has to get past the guard dog.. though how he does produces the one great gag of the short, as he BUILDS A GIANT, TROJAN HORSE ESQUE PLUTO OUT OF JUNK. Just holy shit that’s awesome> It gets him inside, only for him to find his lady friend is a bit TOO affectionate and he has to escape, he does so, and MIckey wonders if he missed him etc lame button. This short was a vacuum of comedy outside of GIANT PLUTO. Seriously where’s my disney giant mecha series. YOu have five main characters, and Pluto among with MANY, MANY side characters, frmo scrooge to the boys to hopefully Della, to even possibly pete and mortimer who could have their own mech against the heroes but maybe join them in the last episode. Maybe max and pj could have some, have a father vs son thing with PJ and Pete. I”m just saying, i’d watch it. I know my nieces would watch it. I know my nephews would watch it. Greenlight it. Or i’ll make it.. somehow. 

How to Ride a Bike: Speaking of the How To Shorts, as usual for the House of Mouse era ones.. this was awesome, pretty much what you’d expect, some goofy, pardon the pun, gags about goofy riding a bike and then a fun climax of him in a bike race. Not a ton to add, other than that hamster bike above is genius. Just needs some tweaking. Really funny, really simple, and really good as you’d expect from a good Goofy Short. Easily the best part of the episode. 

Max’s Embarrassing Date: So this was a disapointment. Like i’d try to be nice.. but I had high hopes given this brought Roxanne back, and while the premise was stock maybe they’d do something funny with with it. 

But no the plot is pretty standard, very predictable and fairly obnoxious. Max has a date with Roxanne, and is playing it cool and what not, but is worried his dad will find out.. which he somehow did offscreen. Probably Clarabelle.. I mean they do go out sometimes in this one, wouldn’t surprise me. 

So Max pleads with the rest of the HOM staff to keep him away because he fears his dad will overdo things, which.. is fair and one of the few things I like> He dosen’t want him to overdo it on the mood because this is well.. a first date. He dosen’t want to pressure her or himself and just wants it to be nice and calm. The problem is it’s framed like him once again being embarassed by his dad and having to learn better.

At this point we’d had TWO movies do this already, one of which was only two years old at the time of this episode. This plot is stale as old toast even if it dind’t have goofy in it. And the twist is predictable: the HOM crew end up also overdoing it: Minnie comments on how cute they are and wants candles brought, Daisy gets them a bigger table forgetting how dates work,t hough we do get a great gag of hte 7 dwarves stacked, and Mickey while having .. some.. gopher? I honestly can’t tell who it was, usually i’m better at the cameos. Speaking of which they also have a runner of beast going on a date with Cruella Devile. 

I mean is he cheating on his wife? Is she holding his wife hostage? Is this before belle because we see a post transfomratoin beast too so maybe the House of Mouse is an intersection of space and time? That’s.. actually the most resonable answer I can think of honestly and when i’m focusing more on how the hell your gag works than how funny it is, you clearly failed somewhere along the line. 

Point is Mickey puts his good friend in a pothole, and not only calls max little max, which while an understnadably close family thing to do is still embarassing, but also takes pictures while their eating the spagetthi.. which i’m 100% sure was Huey’s idea nad had Mickey not interrupted, would’ve been tied up down the middle for a lady and the tramp thing. It’s his signature move. Well that and having a panic attack. That’s also one of mine the others being lettterkenny refrences and sex jokes about disney characters.  But yeah this just.. dosen’t work. Them being as embarassing? that’d be fine.. if they weren’t wholly unsympathetic for not only keeping their friend from WELL INTEITONEDLY trying to help his son on his date, something his son shold have no problem with since ROXANNE’S MET HIM. AND IS FINE WITH HIM. AND NEVER CARED ABOUT YOU BEING HIS SON LIKE THE DICKHEADS AT SCHOOL. MINUS BOBBY WHO YOUR FRIENDS WITH FOR SOME REASON. My point is this plot bothers me a lot, and it makes the mickey crew come off like assholes for doing this to thier friend instead of just talking to him like a person. Especially since only ONE of them is a parent and Conviently donald is mostly absent. Likely because he realized this was going to end badly and just agreed to tie the spagetthi like huey taught him to keep his involvment in this shit show and gaslighting his best friend to a minimum. 

Eventually Mickey takes things a step too far and has Sebastian almost sing kiss the girl. Max cuts him off though yelling that he just wants them to back off, he just wants them to relax and he TOLD them this, which makes them come off worse as they KNEW he didn’t want this and did it anyway and never apologize becaue apparently the first rule of house of mouse is never apologize for anything, huh huh. Goofy naturally steps in, tells them off and agrees to serve them and Roxanne finds him entertaining and gives him a nose kiss for being a good dad. He’s a good guy that Goof.  Roxanne then whispers something in max’s ear at the end of the date... which gives him an audible erection. No really. And given his age is vauge here I’m suddenly super duper uncomfortable so let’s move on. 

So max tells them she liked it and wants to come back.. 100% sure that wasn’t what she said but what she said isn’t fit to print and you’ve seen what i’ve said and what I put in the we’ll be right back. Point is he’s happy, though Mickey says we’ll try to make it extra special next time. Mickey.. did you do a space mountain’s worth of pills and cokea nd just forget the entire evening? Did you take some of those hangover roofies/ Why would you do that? Was that pete’s new plan to steal the house of mouse? To drug you guys and make you forget you already paid the rent? Did PJ stop him? Inquiring me wants to know. 

Final Thoughts: Yeah this wasn’t a very good episode. Roxanne is wasted despite having a suitable replacment Roxanne voice in Grey Delise, with no real depth just to rehash the plot of the first and second goofy movies. And this one didn’t have an inexpilicable beatnik cafe, PJ getting laid and finally being happy for once, a standard college fraternity plot  surgeically infused with an out of nowhere obession with xtreme sports that was nowhere in the first film, Goofy in an afro, Goofy finding love, That disco sequence, and a climax in which Goofy carries Brad Garret out of a fire, then Brad Garret probably kills the villian of the film who certainly deserved it. My points are this episode was an underwhelming rehash only saved by some good shippy moments and a good goofy short. It was weak, not all that funny, and not all that intersting.  My other point is that an extremley goofy movie is awesome and also kinda insane and I love it for that. I’m glad I saw this one but i’m really disapointed in how bleh it was. Next time I visit the house of mouse is.. actually in a few days as Pete Does a One Man Show. So yeah already 100% better just by having THAT musical number in it, see you then and if not, there’s always another rainbow.

Ephemera Week (2002)

It’s still ephemera week, and we’re still talking about John K. I said most of my piece on him in the last post, so don’t expect there to go full bore on this one, except I forgot to say he’s animation’s Jerry Lewis. His current stuff is basically Hardly Working. I will not elaborate, because I’m being mean to you0.

In March, Adult Swim advertised a run of one-off specials. A couple of them were already covered because they fell under the parameters of “Adult Swim original production”. They were Welcome to Eltingville (March 3rd) and Saddle Rash (March 24th).

Day in the Life of Ranger Smith | March 10th 2002 - 11:00 PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)

This was one of two specials commissioned by Cartoon Network re-imagining Yogi Bear. The artist what took this assignment was John K, who I REEEAALLY skewered in last night’s post, didn’t I?

This is about Ranger Smith harassing animals and writing them up for violating park rules, basically. It’s short! I remember liking it at the time! Okay, maybe I’m going crazy here, but I distinctly remembered a part at the end where Ranger Smith is in bed and he solemnly confides in the viewer that the noises of wilderness give him nightmares and then it just ends. Did I imagine this? It does end with him in bed, but this doesn’t happen in the version on YouTube (which is from the Adult Swim airing). Huh.

Boo Boo Runs Wild | March 10th 2002 - 11:15PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)

Boo Boo Runs Wild was another one of these stand-alone Yogi Bear John K specials. This one was 30 minutes long. The Ranger Smith short was a brief 7 minutes; I’m guessing they aired a couple Capt. Lingers or something to fill time.

This one is about Boo Boo reverting to his feral nature and causing BIIIIG problems! This special would later go on to be kind of a weird trolling thing Adult Swim would do where they aired it every Sunday for a few months, even promoting regularly. This was like 2006, I think? They’d also air it as part of April Fools. Is that Adult Swim admitting this special sorta sucks? Does it sorta suck? Again, I liked these at the time and REFUSED to actively rewatch these for this write-up. Sorry.

The Jetsons: Father and Son Day/The Best Son | March 10th, 2002 11:45PM (Originally aired on CartoonNetwork.com in 2001) Our John K rock block ends with a pair of Jetsons shorts, Father and Son Day and The Best Son respectively. This is kinda the same deal as his Yogi Bear shorts, but these were exclusive for Cartoon Network’s website. I remember watching them on there. They are as bad as you’d expect late-period John K internet shorts to be, though the second short is a superior version of Spielberg’s A.I. (in that it’s shorter).

Night of the Living Doo | March 17th, 2002 - 11:00PM (originally aired on Cartoon Network, 2001)

Night of the Living Doo originally aired as wraparound segments during a Halloween Scooby Doo marathon on Cartoon Network. It’s kinda like an episode of the Scooby Doo Movies, which shoehorned in a guest star each episode. Suddenly my man Dick Van Dyke be running a carnival and shit. That’s the Scooby Doo Movies. At the end of the night they played all the wraparound segments in one uninterrupted sitting, so the viewer could appreciate it as an actual full-on Scooby Doo episode. Night of the Living Doo functioned both as an extension of that series as well as a parody. The guests were Gary Coleman, David Cross, and the very cool band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was all very self-deprecating and had jokes about the absurdity of Scooby Doo tropes. Well trod territory by this point, sure. But this is better than most irreverent Scooby Doo things. It didn’t hurt that I was a HUGE David Cross fan when this aired. Is this where I tell the stupid-ass story about getting mad at a message board guy for not liking David Cross? Sure. Okay, yeah. When this aired on Adult Swim a guy on Kon’s (hi Kon) message board posted something about not finding David Cross funny, shrugging that he didn’t get the hype. He cited this and his appearances in the Men in Black movies, and nothing else as proof for his lackluster comedy skills. It’s kinda like deeming Eddie Murphy as a bad comedian after watching Dr. Doolittle.

The point of this special is that David Cross is a little wooden and stilted, like in the old Scooby Doo Movies episodes. This poster revealed that he never heard David Cross’s stand-up or seen Mr. Show, explaining “I don’t watch puppet shows” A response that still baffles me to this day. Why Mr. Show isn’t a-- WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT? I’m not even sure if there was EVER a puppet on Mr. Show*. David wasn’t even a guest on Crank Yankers at this point! SO WHAT THE FUCK? To this day whenever mutual pals from that board get together and watch a movie or show and a puppet appears we make a joke about this guy. Good story? No? Fuck you.

Other stuff about this show: When it originally aired on Cartoon Network it was a little bit longer than the Adult Swim version. There’s a missing scene. I think it’s David trying to play an improv game with a mummy or something. At one point I had it on tape, but I’m not sure I kept it. Sorry.

*sorry to be coy here, but I do know of at least one puppet on Mr. Show, episode 204 there is brief footage of Grass Valley Greg putting on a puppet show for his staff. This CAN’T be the source of the confusion, can it? It’s literally like, 5 seconds.

I never really saw oblongs as something for the hot topic set. They had Invader Zim and Squee for that kind of shit. Oblongs feel like it was always directly targeting me: the shut-in comedy nerd who would appreciate will ferrell and the sklars being in a thing. Since they ended up doing the exact same show with Janeane Garofalo and David Cross a few years later it seems like that was the goal.

Yeah, I guess that also makes sense. There were a few elements that were kinda gothy but this show was mostly just Angus Oblong ahem, clowning around (puckering mouth to stifle laughter like Chris Elliott in Cabin Boy)

What are your thoughts on the other adult animation blocks of the past couple decades? Spike's notriously failed attempt. Animation Domination. Apparently Syfy has had their own going?

Spike was irredeemably bad. People think this shit is easy. Animation Domination is sorta legit, but it’s anchored by mostly crap. That ADHD thing was kinda good and underrated. Is that still going on? I wish I were more diligent about watching/recording that. Some of them bumpers were good. Also, we mustn’t forget MTV’s oddities. They were kinda the first cable network to court Adult Animation as their thing. They deserve some kind of credit for that. I’m sure they’re doing fine.

What would be your Adult Swim dream come true?

Having a complete archive of Adult Swim blocks on a harddrive like Don Giller has with his Letterman archive. Even the commercials and shit. I know of a guy who was a regular taper of the entire block from night 1 but I’m not sure he kept up with it when they went nightly. I should ask him if he still has his tapes, huh?

That or they bring back the BUILD YOUR OWN DVD thing but with blu-rays and you can make your own bumps, which was a different thing they had. THEY SHOULD COMBINE THEM. And you can master it in SD if you wanna put 10 hours of stuff on a disk.

All this is archival bullshit dork shit. Real answer: Clay Croker comes back from the dead and every block is hosted by Space Ghost. That’d be it, right?

McDonalds reintroduces limited edition Adult Swim Toys. You can get them all (plus an extra to keep wrapped for collectors purposes) but you have to spend 20 dollars at McDonalds to grab them all. This is the last day of the promotion. You have to personally eat everything you buy but you can take it home. You can only buy one of each food item. What are you getting? Unless I’m hired to by a large corporation, probably not. Also I don’t think I actually have much in the way of merch other than DVDs. 1. Since when have you been a P1ece?

Since predebut! Like... August 2020 or so? I know that as soon as information about the members started releasing I was like “I NEED to stan the FNC babies!!”

2. What made you decide to stan P1H?

Their logo performance, because I was really impressed by their dance skills when I first watched that only a few days after it was released! But also being a Fantasy made me want to adopt SF9′s little brothers :’) I just didn’t expect I’d call them my ult group a year later ;;

3. Who is/are your bias(es)? Is your first bias still your current bias? If not, who was it before that?

Intak. And technically I was going to bias Theo at first but that.. never really happened kasjdflksa so yeah, my first bias is still my current bias^^

4. Your favourite era so far?

Oof... I think I’ll have to go with the current era, simply because I have high hopes for them and I’m looking forward to see all the content we’ll get this era!!

5. Your favourite title track/MV?

Siren forever ✊😌 I still remember the first time I heard it and I was sooo blown away by their vocal skills??? Their performance skills??? The way this song is probably one of the best debuts in kpop imo???? And how this group is this good and harmonious already when it’s only their debut??? Wow, I actually got chills thinking about all of this again now... 

(Ok but tbh Scared and DILT are impressive too... they started off so well and just keep getting better!!!)

6. Your fav P1H choreo?

Peacemaker. I’d have probaby chosen smth else but somehow when I saw them perform this at the showcase it legit made me cry. It’s just so nice to see this group who did mostly very strong concepts so far to also be able to dance like that and to put so much emotion behind their moves??? Another pleasant surprise by the piwons....

7. Your fav b-sides?

That’$ Money, Before the Dawn, Ayaya, That’s It, If You Call Me. Honestly I love all their songs, and I could add on to this list until it’s almost their full discography, but I think I’ll leave it at these 5. 

8. Your fav cover of theirs?

The Then, Now and Forever cover, anyone?? Keeho’s All Of Me cover? Their Billie Eilish performance???? Maniac?? I don’t think I can just choose one tbh??? Keeho and Theo doing Needy?? Intak just covering the entirety of Resonance?? 

If I was forced to choose I’d probably say Maniac though, but really, everything they cover is so good because they really manage to put a part of themselves into these songs, and I keep rewatching all their covers every once in a while!!

9. Any P1H video you keep coming back to?

Probably the Maniac cover? I love it, and also it has something really calming to me so ;; (also Theo’s “You maniac” is still kinda hot, don’t even try to convince me otherwise kadsjfklas)

10. Have you watched their little STAGE + performances? What’s your favourite?

I have seen all of them... multiple times aksjödfklsa I think my favourites have got to be this and this. Just.... watch and let them speak for themselves. They really are a group full of main and lead dancers, istg

11. Your favourite Saessak Harmony episode? (If you haven’t seen any, I highly recommend!!!)

The first one? Where they have to remember that nursery rhyme jsadkfasdlj but also ep. 5 where they get drenched in water whenever they say a forbidden word :’)

Honestly I love all of Saessak Harmony though, and their other series too!! It’s really nice to see them become more open and joke around more from one show to the other!

14. Is there anything they’ve helped you with/you learned from them?

There are way too many things tbh? I think there’s a lot you can learn from them, and I guess every member has something different to teach. 

One thing, for example, is that Soul’s personality and the way he acts reminds me a bit of how I acted back in school? And looking back on myself I used to be ashamed of being the “weird kid”, but seeing him being his weird self so confidently and being loved for it I started thinking that maybe the way I used to be wasn’t so wrong after all.

15. A concept you want to see them do in the future?

A happy summer concept!!! Also something elegant like SF9′s Tear Drop in the far future? Because I’m sure they could pull it off and also I like death :)

16. A collab you’re hoping for?

SF9 Juho making a song for them! Also maybe a collab with N.Flying? I feel like these two groups would work well together^^

17. Fav member combination from the partner vlives?

This is a really tough question kaljdfkas I remember watching Keeho and Theo building those marshmallow structures and then setting the poor marshmallows on fire. That was fun :’). But Jiung and Intak also have a very wholesome dynamic, and their dance lives are,,,,,, a lot.

18. Fav lyric if you have one?

I wrote this question with a line in mind tbh kasdöjflkas

“난 사랑의 빵을 크게 부풀려” from If You Call Me (which roughly translates to “I raise the bread of love”) because it sounds really cute and also how do you even come up with that jskdlfsa in general I love the lyrics to this song because of its backstory!! 

Unfortunately I haven’t looked into p1h lyrics as much as I want to yet, but from what I can catch and understand while listening, they have a lot of very creative lyrics and they seem to think about how to phrase what a lot!

19. Fav vocal, rapper and dancer? (I know, I know, these are all super hard questions...)

Fav vocal is Keeho, fav dancer is Intak, fav rapper.... who am I to choose...?

20. The moment you fell in love with your bias?

Right here. (((But also bold of anyone to assume I’m not still falling in love with him a bit more each day, just watching him exist.)))

21. A member you can’t help but get wrecked by?

Jiung... but like... because he’s so ksjflsajfksf adorable??? And I love everything about him so much and he is also just a very relatable introvert akdjfklas 

22. Something you love about each member? (Can be one thing or a whole rant, whatever you feel like^^)

Okay, here we go, some random things I love about everyone!

Keeho: His voice!!! How confident and handsome he is (which is funny because with him I went from “visually not my type” to “HE! IS! SO! HANDSOME!!!!”). The way he still manages to continuously give his members a culture shock with some of the things he does and says :’). How outspoken he is. How he’s not afraid to stand up for himself and his beliefs. The way he feels like P1eces’ best friend. His jokes and humor!! The way he adores the other members so obviously and shows that every chance he gets. How whiny and embarrassed he sometimes gets when things aren’t going his way afjakjadkfa. The way he always makes sure to translate things to english as much as he can, so the international fans who don’t speak korean can understand what’s happening too! 

Theo: Again, his voice!! The way I feel like he can do anything he sets his mind to. How he improves his dancing so fast!!! And even though his singing was already really good to begin with, it feels like he’s also still continuously improving in that area! His humor too - the way he does not miss a beat when it’s about roasting his members (especially Keeho). The way he goes absolutely crazy when anyone even remotely mentions Big Bang :’). What a fun and open person he really is once he lets you in. The way he overcame his fear of cameras and how brightly he shines on stage now!! The Shocked Theo Face™. How he won’t hesitate to make fun of himself too, if it’s for the sake of entertainment (like when he drew himself as a bird in his self introduction). Drink Rice (his jokes are just my favourite kind of humor).

Jiung: His smile!!! His face!!! His expressions!!! Everything!!! Choi Jiung perfect boi!! How sweet his voice sounds (I know I know I say I love his voice about everyone but I really do love all their voices so much???). What a warm-hearted person he is. How he does everything at his own pace. How much thought he puts into everything. The way he can come up with a well thought out freestyle dance on the spot??? How in tune with himself he seems. His sincerity. Have I mentioned he makes me feel very warm inside? The way it’s obviously hard for him to express affection but he still does his best to let the other members and his fans know how much he appreciates and loves them. The songs he makes and always plays for fans in his vlives! His impersonations of everything, including a cockroach?? The way he talks. How he bursts out into the brightest, biggest laughter.

Intak: I don’t even know where to start?? His confidence, his passion, and the way he radiates it. The way he dances. How he manages to have his feelings on display when he dances. The way he talks. His pronunciation is so nice to listen to for some reason? The way he writes his lyrics. How he always makes sure to choose just the right words when he explains how he feels about something. Just the way he’s an absolute mess sometimes. His fuckboi antics?? But also what a genuinely sweet person he is? The way he takes care of himself and of others. The Big Brother Energy™ that he radiates when he’s with 05-line, but Soul especially? His expressions. How playful he can be, especially in the way he raps. But also what an absolute softie he is? His fire!

Soul: The dancer this boy is!! The unreal control he has over his own body and his movements. How relatable he is when the others are talking over each other in korean and he has no idea what’s going on anymore so he just kinda sits there and smiles :’). His angelic vocals that I hope we will get to hear more often in the future;;. The way he just lives for himself and for his passion for performing. How he doesn’t seem to afraid even a little bit, despite living far away from home and in a country where he doesn’t speak the language perfectly yet. The way he’s so unapologetically himself. His humor!!! His completely fucked up humor!!! The weird things he does and the strange answers he comes up with. He lives in his own sphere and I just admire him for everything he is and stands for. 

Jongseob: His maturity. I lovelovelove his flow when he raps! Also have you seen him dance? Like have you seen him??? He seems like such a sweet kid and his smile is one of the prettiest I’ve seen. The way he thinks so deeply about his words, this is something I noticed during their debut showcase and I’ve loved about him ever since! How his experience on stage shows whenever he performs. ASMR king!! How he’s such a nice and smiley boy, but when it’s about exposing his members he gets ready to kill lol (like that one time when Keeho owed everyone coffee but hadn’t bought it yet). Sits like an anime girl?? His lightness he puts behind everything he does!! How easily embarrassed he gets. In general, when he’s being all professional and confident in front of a camera and then something happens that makes his shy side jump out for a little while.

23. Something you love about being a P1ece?

Being able to support six very talented and kind young people!! Also that it’s still a relatively small fandom. Small fandoms are really comfortable to me, because there’s barely any big fanwars or other troubles among the fans, and it feels very familiar. I also love watching our boys grow, and they’re the first group I’ve been stanning since predebut, so it feels like I really get to walk their whole journey as idols with them, and that’s kinda nice^^

Bonus: Anything P1Harmony-related that you want to recommend to your (non-P1ece) followers or to new P1eces?

If you can and want to afford it - they did a little series of interviews with Wonderwall during Scared era. Those are fun to watch, and give you some deep insight into their working and thought process, and it gets pretty personal at times. Also not to shamelessly self-promote here, but,,,, *glances at my content guides* (I try to put every video of theirs that I can find in there, so there might be stuff you haven’t seen yet and want to check out^^)

And then also this, because the world needed it, and the first part makes me cry because it’s so beautiful and also how dare anyone even think about covering my favourite Taemin song.

In one of your posts, you said the following: "I didn’t like having to watch Joon Sung betray Dong Jin like he did, but it’s good to know that for such a good guy he definitely is flawed." I didn't understand. Could you explain, please? He redeemed himself in the end, don't you think? Or do you think that the identity reveal was a form of betrayal? Also, I hope Min Kyu redeems himself because the drama showed that he has potential to be a decent person.

Hi, anon! Hope you don’t mind the long-ass response! In writing my answer to your Ask, I guess I’ve unintentionally created an analysis of Joon Sung and Min Kyu that no one asked for.

Re: Joon Sung

Because at the beginning of the drama, they seemed to build Joon Sung and Min Kyu as opposites in Dong Jin’s eyes: Min Kyu as the bad guy, asshole leader vs. Joon Sung as the good guy, compassionate leader. I mean, hell they even push that narrative a bit further by having Dong Jin form a comradery with Joon Sung outside of the ops and butt heads/conflict with Min Kyu during the ops.

And even when it was revealed that Joon Sung’s father was Lee Hyuk and that he was sent to Polaris to keep an eye on Min Kyu, Joon Sung still came off as a more decent and good guy because of how he treated others both on and off ops: with respect, consideration, and empathy. Hell, even when he butted heads with Min Kyu, he didn’t come off as bad or an asshole because even in a conflict he was calm, level-headed, and respectful.

It was only when that whole debacle with the camcorder happened that you began to question whether Joon Sung was no better or worst than Min Kyu.

When he destroyed that camera, I’ll admit that I was disappointed in him. I still liked him better than Min Kyu, but because my personal elevated level of admiration and respect for him probably matched that of Dong Jin’s own -- so at the time I could imagine Dong Jin’s look of betrayal when the truth comes out... And then it actually happened and Yep, we had similar levels of disappointment.

Because admittedly I put Joon Sung on a pedestal. Then he got knocked off that pedestal when he betrayed Dong Jin. Which of course later became more an error in judgement, in betraying someone’s trust despite his intentions to protect his family. More so when it was revealed that Joon Sung lobbied a deal with his father for the destruction of the camcorder [1. that they forgot it happened and 2. his father drops out of the Presidential race] AND that he kept the videotape itself just in case his father betrays him... I legit went “Huh. He’s not perfect but he’s good.” I realized then that he’s just as flawed and human as everyone else. And that’s a good thing overall. It shows that even good, decent characters can do bad things, make mistakes, have flaws. Makes them more likeable and relatable. 

Also, for transparency, I want to make it clear that even when Joon Sung seemed to take a heel turn in his arc, a part of me was going to still prefer him over Min Kyu because of his soft spot for Dong Jin. Heck, I’d even call it fondness because I’ve discovered in rewatching their scenes pre-camcorder, Joon Sung seemed a bit more attentive and protective of Dong Jin. And when Dong Jin discovered Joon Sung’s lies and what he did to the camcorder, and then called Joon Sung out on his character, the way that man couldn’t hide his hurt at Dong Jin’s disappointment in him just... SLAYED. ME.

But I digress...

Re: Min Kyu

Which brings us to Min Kyu and why I think he’s better as the antagonist than a redeemed character.

At first I wondered if it was because we saw Min Kyu [and in parallel, Joon Sung] through Dong Jin’s eyes that I already was wary of him and slow to trust or even like our asshole commander.

And listen, I am a BIG FAN of the Asshole Characters. But I also need them to be prickly on the outside and soft on the inside and for a bit, all I saw of Min Kyu was his need to get out of whatever shithole he found himself in and get back on track in his military career. And usually, that need to fix his situation results in assholes doing WHATEVER IT TOOK, even if it means Fuck Others, Get Me My Commendation. Those type of Assholes I’m not a fan of because the only loyalty they have is towards themselves.

A close mirror to Min Kyu could be found in Lee Hyuk, the actual antagonist of this series [and no, not the monster/creature Polaris is searching/hunting for]. Both have agendas outside of whatever they’re entrusting to others. Both don’t listen to their teammates unless the results will look favourable on them. 

Later tho I came to realize that okay, so maybe Min Kyu is actually capable of being the type of Asshole Character that I like: the one who is an ass except to certain others. Which is good because that means thankfully Min Kyu isn’t of the level of villainy of Lee Hyuk. There have been many incidents where Min Kyu’s decency and humanity revealed itself afterall. His bond to Moon Cheol is the best example of that. Another example was his initial reaction to seeing Dong Jin fall apart over Baek Jun’s death. 

However, as the drama progressed, I’ve noticed that Min Kyu actually shines when he’s playing and manipulating the system to get what he wants. Like when Min Kyu quickly realized that Lee Hyuk has connections and pulls a LOT of strings and that Lee Hyuk was in a position to give Min Kyu what he wanted. So what’d Min Kyu do? He made himself available to Lee Hyuk. Will that later bite him in the ass? Maybe. But we’ve also seen how smart and calculated Min Kyu can be, so at this point, I’m actually rooting for Min Kyu to make himself dispensable to Lee Hyuk and then betray the man when shit hits the fans.

I mean, there are antagonists we love to hate, and then there are those that we love seeing doing bad things especially to bad people and I have a feeling that Min Kyu might be that key to helping take Lee Hyuk, the drama’s true monster, down!

V Watches MagiReco - Episode 5 Review

*Spoilers for Magia Record Anime Episode 5*

I won’t deny that I was both extremely nervous and excited for this episode at the same time. There was just so much building up and so many vital things to introduce this week. I was anticipating an interesting conversation between Yachiyo and Mifuyu, a much longer and more difficult Rumour battle, Iroha’s doppel, and a possible Mami appearance.

And I can say for sure that not only did we get all of that, but we got them all done very well, with a few unexpected twists and additions, too!

I feel that they’re deliberately making Mifuyu and her relationship with Yachiyo extremely vague for now; it’s hard to judge as a game player because I already know everything, but I do wonder how anime-only fans feel about Mifuyu, what with how little they’re telling us so far. The scene with Yachiyo and Mifuyu really goes to show how shackled to the past Yachiyo is, which is a nice irony when we consider the short lecture she gave Iroha last episode about being a prisoner of her past. The whole Seance Shrine ordeal basically showed that if anyone’s a prisoner of their past, it’s definitely Yachiyo, and the contrast between how she and Iroha respond to the fake Mifuyu and Ui is a great way to illustrate that. All the symbolism and visual imagery going on while Yachiyo and Mifuyu spoke was also really, really well done. I especially liked the little detail of how much Yachiyo’s hand was shaking when she was trying to purify her Soul Gem; this is probably our first time seeing her so disturbed and shaken up, which really goes to show how important her relationship with Mifuyu was to her.

I was not expecting such an amazing fight with Mifuyu, though! It’s always amazing to see these characters fighting outside of the fixed actions and movements shown with their game sprites, and I really love how graceful and agile Mifuyu is shown to be, jumping and gliding all over the place with such little effort. Yachiyo’s spear going right through her chest was OUCH EW, but I did enjoy that powerful moment from Yachiyo, who shows that she isn’t completely lost in her longing for their past relationship and does retain some good sense after all.

The Rumour looked slightly different from what I imagined (which is okay), but what I really appreciated? Finally a battle of some sort that doesn’t end way too quickly and easily; we finally see characters other than Iroha struggle with a monster that actually puts up a real fight. Iroha is continuously portrayed as weak but very eager to help out regardless, and I like that a lot about her character, even if I’d be just as frustrated as Yachiyo if I were in her position xD I’m really looking forward to seeing Iroha finally growing in strength and becoming a magical girl who can hold her own against the Kamihama Witches and Rumours!

As for the Doppel? I LOVED IT. I’m glad they went into detail about what went on inside Iroha’s mind before it happened, rather than having the monster suddenly exploding out of her with no explanation. The imagery with the bandages was done very well, too, and the creepy face “dark Iroha" makes before the Doppel is released has a very distinct PMMM style to me. My only slight complaint is that I would have liked a good look at the Doppel before she went up, up, and away and tore that Rumour to shreds xD The eerie bird-like sound effects were a very nice touch, but it was a little difficult to see what the Doppel was doing sometimes because everything happened so quickly with so much movement; I had to rewatch the scene a few times and pause on some frames before I understood what exactly was going on ^^;; (Iroha looks super pretty with her hair out, though! ♥)

It’s also really interesting to me that the anime shows that the Doppel doesn’t just effortlessly disappear like no big deal after the big attack. We see that even after the Rumour is destroyed, Iroha’s Doppel is still very much active and rampant, which makes me wonder what it exactly takes for a magical girl to “control” and “rein in” the Doppel and return back to normal, since, in Iroha’s case, it’s interrupted by the appearance of a very familiar magical girl!!!

When Mami appeared with her signature theme and chanted “Tiro Finale,” I legit felt chills down my spine (♥ω♥*) What an entrance!!! I also loved how they presented the tension between Mami and Yachiyo, both of them being the oldest and most mature of their respective groups and one of the most respected magical girls in their city. I think they have a very nice balance between including the original characters enough to keep old fans happy and allowing the new characters a chance to shine on their own, and I really hope they keep up this balance in future episodes :)

I know there’s been a few jokes in the past about Ui sounding like a broken record with how she repeats the thing about magical girls being saved in Kamihama. But this episode takes that idea and turns it up a few hundred notches to present one of the creepiest and most disturbing sequences I’ve seen in this anime so far. There’s something especially unsettling to see Ui looking all cute and happy and “normal” while sounding... well, like that. The fast-paced editing really adds to the urgent, almost claustrophobic kind of atmosphere, and builds up an even greater sense of mystery surrounding her character.

And the final part at Yachiyo’s place? We finally have our first glance at Mikazuki Villa! ^___^ It’s nice to see Yachiyo showing a much more gentle and caring side; she’s not as cold and brash as we’ve seen her, but there’s still a good bit of coolness and an aloof attitude that will defrost slowly as the characters get introduced one by one and the quintet forms :) Iroha sleeping in Mifuyu’s room was also a really nice and bittersweet touch, and I do like the way they’re using this kind of symbolism to set her up as a “new partner” for Yachiyo. Seeing all those mugs (and a quick Kanae cameo!) did hurt, but I like that the story will slowly allow Yachiyo to break free from the burden of her past and welcome a new and loving family. I do, however, wonder if that final scene of Mifuyu’s “ghost” or “spirit” would make anime-only fans think Mifuyu is dead or something xD

And that post-credits scene... OKAY I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT. That was one of the weirdest yet strangely entertaining scenes I’ve seen in any anime in a good while. I know Kaede summoned her Doppel, but... was the incident even real? Is she “still a Doppel” in the end, and not quite back to human yet? Was that the real world, or a labyrinth? Why was Mitama there? I take it that this is the first time Kaede has ever released a Doppel and doesn’t quite know what’s going on? And the last shot is most likely emphasising how the Doppel purifies the magical girl’s Soul Gem? The entire scene was just super trippy and things didn’t really make sense, yet I loved every second of how strange and wrong it all felt. This is probably one of the most “original” things the anime has done that wasn’t in the game (apart from Kuroe), and if they can somehow make sure that it all makes sense and ties in well together, then I’m all for these kinds of deviations if it means we get an even better and more suspenseful story!

I absolutely loved this week’s episode, and I was definitely not let down even with all the expectations and hopes I had for it. Many people say that the fifth episode of an anime is what “seals the deal” on whether someone will continue watching or end up dropping it, and even if it’s not accurate for me, being a game player and all, I do feel that I’d definitely stick with this series to the end if I was experiencing the story for the very first time.

Looking forward to Felicia’s debut next week! And... could that possibly mean that Kyoko will be showing up, too? (⊙ꇴ⊙)

Oh, and as a sidenote: I knew from the very first time I watched the OP that they would slowly add characters to the last part where Iroha turns around and runs towards Yachiyo >:) Sure enough, we see Tsuruno join them this week, and I can’t wait to see the full team slowly assemble! ^3^

For 7 Years I was vehemently opposed to the idea of Theo James.

Sit down children, let me tell ye a story of redemption.

About 7 years ago is when Theo James was starting to make waves in America and from the minute I googled him, I was just not impressed. I thought his hair was too blonde for his inky eyebrows and he looked like he should have been a Franco brother, but wasn’t and I found that irritating. My main phrase of opposition spoken to myself was always “IF YOU’RE GOING TO LOOK LIKE A FRANCO, THEN YOU NEED TO BE A DAMN FRANCO!”

I didn’t even give him points, as I am wont to do, for being English. Accents, especially English accents, usually get you copious amounts of points from this girl. I dunno, he just didn’t sit well with me. Plus, I am super snobbish about YA novels and how they seemed to take over all of entertainment, so that, coupled with my irrational Theo James hate, made sure I NEVER watched a “Divergent” film. 

So there I was, for 7 whole years, blissfully avoiding Theo James AT ALL COSTS. Hoping I’d never be forced to suffer him for 2 hours in a movie theater or the comforts of my home.

THEN, some random internet article plus my best friend implored me to watch a new Masterpiece Theater offering called “Sanditon”. I had no idea Theo James was in Sanditon until I began watching the previews shortly before the first episode. I immediately ROLLED MY EYES - it was legit a Sidney Parker eye roll, you guys! But I figured I would see how long I could stand it since it was “new” Jane Austen and it had been a while since I’d been excited about something on Masterpiece.

Let’s just say that within the first 10 seconds of him being onscreen, 7 years of irrational dislike/hate DISSIPATED. He was so perfectly brooding and dickish - Darcy 2.0. Sigh.

And then the series progressed. And then I rewatched the series. And I will keep rewatching the series. And I will KEEP STANNING FOR SIDNEY PARKER UNTIL THE DAY I DIE. Theo has done such a BEAUTIFUL job of portraying this character, in my opinion. The man was so good that he ERASED 7 YEARS OF HATE FROM MY COLD, DEAD, ROBOT HEART, Y’ALL.

The acting choices he has made are nothing short of brilliance. I’m an actor, so I pick apart most performances and what Theo and Rose did in Sanditon is absolute perfection. PERFECTION, KIDS. The nuances of their performances are overwhelming. I think it’s probably about 80% of what makes the show work and what makes this series resonate with me so much.

I didn’t spot one false moment from either of them. They made me believe that these characters actually live and breathe on some plane of existence and frankly, I want to go to there and make them kiss and be perfect together forever. 

Theo and Rose being absolutely physically gorgeous is just the highest bonus imaginable on top of the GIFT of their performances. It’s really baffling to me that this series wasn’t as well received in the UK. My greatest joy would be to get a 2nd season at the very LEAST. If we got more than that, of course, I would do cartwheels for days, but one season is simply NOT ENOUGH for the story of the Parker Brothers and Miss Heywood and Miss Lambe and The Babingtons and James Stringer, and Lady Denham’s meddling ass and all the other wackos of Sanditon.

My thoughts and feelings on this series and this story are not done, but I feel like this post is already too long, so I will end these thoughts and confession here.

GO Rom Com Spotlight: @princip1914​

The marvelous @princip1914​  has claimed Latter Days to adapt for Good Omens in the Good Omens Rom Com Event.

For reference, here’s some information about the source material!

Synopsis of Latter Days: Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss), a young Mormon, arrives in Los Angeles with three fellow missionaries to evangelize. The group’s promiscuous gay neighbor, Christian (Wes Ramsey), makes a bet he can seduce and sleep with one of them, and his flirtatious ways help Aaron realize he is actually gay. Returning home to small-town Idaho in shame, Aaron is sent to a faith-based center to be cured of his homosexuality – while Christian, who’s fallen in love with him, desperately tries to find him.

We spent some time chatting about how the adaptation is coming so far, as well as future plans for it! Now, get to know @princip1914 (also here on Ao3) a little better!

goromcom:  You know how if you open a Tumblr chat with someone you haven’t chatted to before, Tumblr tells you two things they post about? Yours reports that you “post about #good omens and #crowley"–which seems legit.

princip1914​: I didn’t know tumblr did that but yes, that’s 100% of my content right now, lol.

goromcom: You chose to adapt Latter Days as your rom com. Has this movie been a favorite of yours, or is there some other reason you chose it?

princip1914​: I picked Latter Days because I remembered it fondly from my high school days when I was a baby gay unsure of myself or my place in the world. It was one of the first gay romance films I ever saw, but I definitely did not rewatch it before I picked it. Upon re-watching it now…wow, it has not really held up. The acting is cheesy, the characters fall in love, like instantaneously, there’s a Black Best Friend™️ character, and there’s a whole lot of ways in which the movie just uses AIDS, homophobia, suicide, and straight up torture as a plot device [ed: which we will talk about later under the cut, to make it easily avoidable for those heeding the content warnings that will be listed above the cut.] That really grosses me out.   But I love working with flawed source material! I think it’s fun to see what I can do with it. The most recent fic I wrote was verrryyy loosely based on some tropes from Groundhog Day, which honestly on a rewatch in 2019 also contains problematic elements. So I think taking these old, somewhat flawed, properties and transforming them is a great feeling!

That said, Latter Days also has some elements that really speak to me even though it is a bit cheesy/cringy at the end. One thing I loved about it growing up is that it really tries to engage with big questions about belief, faith, and being a good person in an authentic way you don’t usually see in Rom Coms. Its storyline–“Mormon and gay playboy fall in love, Mormon learns you can be a good person without organized religion, gay playboy learns how to confront his fear that everything is meaningless and make his own meaning in the world through relationships”–is actually pretty similar to Good Omens, although dressed up very differently. 

goromcom: What’s your favorite moment of your chosen rom com, and are you looking forward to presenting it in your adaptation? Any loose plans for that scene that you can share? 

princip1914​: I have a lot of favorite moments from the movie, it’s hard to pick just one, but here goes. [Spoiler alert for Latter Days and the upcoming GO adaptation fic] In the movie, there’s a character whose long-term partner has just died and the Mormon character (who will be Aziraphale in my version) is comforting her. He asks her if it was her husband who died and she says, “He wasn’t my husband. He was my best friend.” And let me tell you, I CANNOT WAIT to devastate Aziraphale with that line in my fic. [end spoilers] I’m also pretty excited to adapt the sex scenes to be honest. That movie earned an R for a reason.

Do you plan to stick very closely to the story beats of the original movie, or make bigger changes? And will this be a human AU, or will you fit it into canon?

princip1914​: I think it’s funny because Latter Days already feels like a Good Omens AU. As I mentioned, the themes are very similar and the Mormon character, in the first two acts of the movie especially, has a very similar character arc to Aziraphale.

I think I could stick closely to the movie if I wanted to do a simple human AU. However, the more I thought about it, I realized the more difficult and more interesting fic would be one that works within both the bounds of canon and the tropes of the movie, and actually ends quite differently than the movie. I’m not sure I can keep the apocalypse in play with the ending I’m shooting for, so my guess is this fic is going to end up being a canon divergence fic set somewhere in the ‘90s, which feels about as early as I could go without losing the early 2000s vibe of Latter Days.

Trying to adapt elements of the movie to Good Omens canon and not vice versa, has been a really interesting challenge. It meant figuring out what is essential to Latter Days and what can be changed without losing the shape or recognizablity of the source material. I’m keeping the setting in LA. I’m keeping the central philosophical question of the movie (which is arguably also the central philosophical question of Good Omens). One thing that obviously had to be changed for this story to fit into canon is that while Aziraphale and Crowley have a long history, Latter Days is essentially a meet cute. So, what I’m saying here is that the first lines of my fic are: “What the fuck,” hissed Crowley, “Aziraphale, you’re a Mormon now?” and it just goes downhill from there.

goromcom: That sounds great!

I am blatantly stealing this question from The Good Place: The Podcast, but here goes: Tell me something “good”. It can be something big or small. It can be a charity you think is doing good work, or you can talk about how great your pet is.

princip1914​:  Well, my pet is amazing. Her name is D'Arcy, she’s a mutt terrier/lab mix and gives the best cuddles. But, since not everyone can cuddle with my dog, I think I’d like to just mention a charity that I started working with this year. It’s called Back on My Feet. Basically, it’s just an organization that sets up running groups in cities in the US northeast and south that connect people who are recovering from addiction or recently experienced homelessness or incarceration with other people in the area who like to run. It meets 3 days a week and we just go on runs and talk.

goromcom:  Exercise and helping people! It sounds amazing. :)

Okay, so other than NOT doing an AU, what’s an interesting decision you’ve made in your planning so far–a notable casting decision, a changing of venue, or some other plan you have to paint Good Omens all over your rom com?

[ content warning for discussion of conversion therapy under the cut–discussion is firmly anti conversion therapy. ]

princip1914​: I think that this is more of a general change to the plot, but one which I do feel is in keeping with Good Omens rather than the source material. I don’t really like to write (or read) dark fic or whump type stuff (totally fine if others are into that, but it’s just not my cup of tea!). The end of the movie has some very intense stuff that sort of uses horrible things like electroshock therapy to “cure” homosexuality as a plot device/obstacle to getting the two leads together and…yeah I am probably going to signficantly change a lot of that. Even if I wanted to keep it, I think it wouldn’t be appropriate for the Good Omens elements of the story. I think Aziraphale’s character arc is more about his internalized fear of heaven (which can, of course, be read sort of as internalized homophobia) rather than external fear of punishment. That’s the main difference between heaven and hell, right? Heaven punishes through guilt, and hell punishes through pain. I think it just wouldn’t work for Aziraphale’s character to have to go through a series of external tortures, so you can absolutely expect a lot of the 3rd act of the movie will be changed. If I can, I’d like to take it up through canon and have the third act of the fic feature the notapocalypse, but that might be too much of a tall order. We will see…

I’m also going to make full use of the LA setting! I really like LA and I have some complicated yet fond memories of not-dates I went on in various places in LA with a person who was unattainable romantically but a lovely friend.  I think the movie definitely had a tiny budget, which is why the “LA setting” is basically just reduced to the character’s apartments, but damn it, if I want Aziraphale and Crowley to have tense not-conversations about their relationship while watching the skaters at Venice beach, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

A season per book, fixing the things that they screwed up, including more character development - seriously, Luna joins in the fifth book, but what’s nearly worse is that Harry’s endgame love interest who was in it since movie 1 has had less interactions with Harry in FIVE movies than Luna did in that one movie, like c’mon. A TV show would give so many opportunity to flesh dynamics and friendships and characters out better

The first one was still fun, but then we get fashionable young Dumbledore to join the plot and suddenly there is ANOTHER Dumbledore who was never mentioned before and got to pose as Creepy Kid From The First One?? And why would kind, sweet Queenie mind-rape Jacob and join the bad guys and also wait did the bad wizards predict WWII was going to happen and like the bad guys yeah? Becaus ehonestly WWII is a solid call-out for humanity and where the ever-loving fuck is all of this going I have a headache, I just wanted to see a sheepish ginger collecting Pokémon magical creatures, not this hot mess

Hello anon!! I totally get you 💀 I’m gonna assume that you want me to rec BLs, so I’ll tell you only the ones that I’ve liked best and why, where I watched them, and possible trigger warnings as well for you :)

So first up is my favorite: Theory of Love

Who stars in it: Off Jumpol (as Kai) and Gun Atthaphan (as Third), aka OffGun, aka icons and best friends who we stan to this very day

Why I recommend: I adore this show for so many reasons but overall the vibe is just so good dfhkhkhj It references like a trillion rom-coms and I won’t spoil it but there is a literal montage of some classic rom-com scenes done by the main characters that is just so fucking hysterical, I cry every time. There’s also a compilation here of movie posters that they recreated to imitate some classic rom-coms as well, which made me DIE from emotions I tell you what. This show is just so funny and makes fun of itself with characters that you genuinely grow to adore. Kai is a chaotic dumb of ass bisexual and we love him in this house (as infuriating as he can be lmfao). It’s so rewatchable GOD 10/10 would recommend.

Warnings: There is no sexual abuse in the show of any kind, except for one scene that is just a kiss and very mild, so I think you’d be all good there. :)

History3: Trapped

Who stars in it: Jake Hsu (plays Shao Fei) and Chris Wu (plays Tang Yi), aka weirdos who can’t stop laughing while filming and being dumb in general and I love that for them and me

Why I recommend: I loved it. The main couple is adorable with so much chemistry and I will be totally honest, they remind me SO MUCH of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. Like on the rewatch I just did of this show, I couldn’t believe the similarities the character Shao Fei has to Wei Wuxian and his counterpart Tang Yi has to Lan Wangji. Like. When I tell you I was shook the house, I mean it. But the side couple is ALSO iconic the house and the CUTEST like if you don’t want to adopt Zhao Zi and also officiate his wedding by the show’s end, I’d be shocked dfhhkghdjkl All in all, it’s such a funny show with very tender, heartfelt moments that are to die for. This show has it all: plot twists, cops falling in love with mobsters and vice versa, a character whose goal in life is to just eat as much good food as possible… amazing.

Warnings: The show has fighting and violence but seeing as you watched The Untamed, I’m assuming you’re okay with it lol There is an instance where one character tries to rape one of the leads by drugging him, so keep an eye out for that, but I think it will be obvious because he starts to pass out and you will know whether you feel you have to skip the scene or not. He isn’t undressed, it isn’t anything remotely graphic, but he is groped by the asshole I won’t name man fuck that guy but that’s all!

Dark Blue Kiss

Who stars in it: Fluke Gawin Caskey (Mork) and Podd Suphakorn (Sun) aka two of the most gorgeous and sweet dudes alive fdhgldfhgdk AND BL vets, New Thitipoom (Kao) and Tay Tawan (Pete)

First off: dshhgdksj If you haven’t seen Kiss Me Again or Kiss the Series you might be a little confused. Dark Blue Kiss is sort-of-a-continuation-but-not-really of those other two series, and it sort of adds to the experience if you have seen them. If you want to, just watch Kiss Me Again and I think you’ll be okay honestly; it’s just because you might want context of the characters (Pete and Kao, their friends etc.) and their relationships to one another going into Dark Blue Kiss.

Why I recommend: NOW two of the leads, Sun and Mork, have one of The Best relationships in any BL I’ve ever seen because they have real conversations and have real conflict and issues that they work to get through. Rain (Sun’s younger bro and Mork’s bestie) is an absolute delight and their story arc throughout the show is so iconic we just have to stan. I won’t get into Kao and Pete fhhkhdj because I just have Opinions on fucking w characters/relationships for the sake of drama and that’s what I think this series did to them, unnecessarily ahem But otherwise it’s funny and real and again if you dont literally love Mork and Rain and Sun by the end of it did you even watch the same show???

Warnings: There is a brief scene where one character tries to get w another who is like get tf AWAY weirdo lmfao but there is no actual abuse bc they are stopped well in time to avoid it

Where to watch: I watched Dark Blue Kiss on newasiantv as well because the episodes on YouTube tended to not get subbed as quickly as I wanted which you will understand if you watch this lmao. Tharntype the Series

Who stars in it: Gulf Kanawut (Type) and Mew Suppasit (Tharn) aka those two guys who you might see do a shit ton of fanservice that I diligently ignore because I hate fanservice lol This show exists in the same universe as another BL that I am reluctant to put on here lol but will get into later on.

Why I recommend: BEFORE YALL FLAY ME ALIVE djkhgldhgfdjhhkjd OKAY LISTEN genuinely, on a very real level, I FULLY understand why a lot of people here refused to watch this show or couldn’t finish it. You’re totally valid and legit I almost stopped after ten minutes because I was like here we go AGAIN. However! I was so drawn in by the acting that I wanted to give it a chance, and I’m SO GLAD that I did. Gulf and Mew, as well as Mild (who plays Techno) and Kaownah (who plays Lhong) and everyone else who acts in this show, is incredible and their chemistry is insane. I would say it’s some of the best chemistry and acting I’ve seen, BL or otherwise. You get angry at the two main characters interchangeably and I truly feel that that makes it real, you know what I mean? There is no oh he’s in the right, fuck that other guy 100% for either of them. They are both real, flawed men who grow so immensely throughout this series where by the end you’re so proud of their development and the love they find for themselves and in each other??? Because it doesn’t feel like we’ll get there, but they DO. And it’s BEAUTIFUL. We’re getting a second season, which to me is always a tad worrisome because I do think it ended very well and if they fuck with everything (cough KaoPete) just to fuck with it and stir the pot I’m gonna be Upset. But for now, it’s amazing and speaks on topics that aren’t ever addressed. It’s an unfortunate reality in BL that the way so many relationships begin is through sketchy-consensual (drunk, coerced) or flat out like non consensual sexual shit, and this show dives into the aftermath of sexual abuse, the mental impact that has on a person, and how damaging it can be if left unattended. I would give it a chance. I really do think it’s a well done series. Oh and Techno is so relatable and the only one with a brain cell in this show half the time jkdfhhdlkj

Warnings: Like I said, this show is not an easy watch at times. Very often, in fact, it can be difficult. There is homophobic language, two of the characters (I dont want to spoil everything) have been raped in the past, one as a child (which is NOT GRAPHICALLY SHOWN, don’t worry) and the other as a teenager/young adult, which is sort of shown but not in too much detail. Another character in present day “does stuff” to another that isn’t totally consensual, more than once (which is probably my biggest problem with the show and the one thing I really can’t excuse because like bro I don’t care how big your crush is, don’t be an asshole, point blank), but every other sexual thing in the show is consensual and very much wanted

He’s Coming to Me

Who stars in it: Singto Prachaya (Mes) and Ohm Pawat (Thun) aka just two adorable boys

Why I recommend: This show definitely has one of the more unique plots among BLs. I won’t spoil it, and as with all of these I recommend going in without looking up plots because like I know for me movie trailers etc just tell me everything and there doesn’t seem to be a point in watching the movie if I know so much beforehand. The main characters are cute together, there are funny moments and moments that make you cry. And it’s a happy ending, which we love to see :)

Warnings: There is a major character death, no blood though, and you will understand in context that it isn’t as bad as it seems right now lol Nothing that isn’t consensual, which is a miracle in these shows. Overall wholesome content. There is like a weird storyline with one of the character’s moms which was Different to say the least dfjhdflhgkjf but it didn’t ruin the show for me or anything

3 Will Be Free

Who stars in it: Joss Way-Ar (Neo), Mild Lapassalan (Miw), and Tay Tawan (Shin). If you watch Dark Blue Kiss or any of those before this, you will recognize Tay and Mild as Pete and Sandee (just friends in those shows). Joss is just such a funny, sweet guy and so is Tay Lowkey biased for them and I honestly often favor TayJoss’ chemistry over TayNew, which I think is controversial lmfaoo but it has to be said lol and obviously Mild is a badass actress and talent so having her here is amazing

Why I recommend: So this is the only BL thus far to feature a polyamorous relationship, which is sort of crazy but I’m so happy it’s been done at least once now. The three have such amazing chemistry and you really grow to care for each of them as individuals as well. They’re just really awesome and I adore them and miss them every day fdjghfdglhkjd There’s also a trans actress!! :D

Warnings: There is quite a bit of gun violence bc one of the character’s father’s is a mob boss. Two side characters are killed, one much further into the show so it hurts even MORE, and one of the other side characters therefore to me doesn’t receive the ending they deserve; it was very messy and I think they deserved better. A woman is in an abusive marriage to a man, which sucked and I skipped a lot of it even though it wasn’t necessarily super violent. I just don’t like that stuff ://

Until We Meet Again

Who stars in it: Fluke Natouch (Pharm) and Ohm Thitiwat (Dean), Earth Katsamonnat (Intouch) and Nine Noppakao (Korn). Fluke and Earth invented being friends like……they are so fucking cute and they are both actually queer (have been in public relationships with men) which is always so rare to see and really great :)

Why I recommend: Side couple TeamWin is absolutely iconic. I adore them with my whole body so if for nothing else, watch it for them LMAO But for real InKorn is such a cute couple and PharmDean has a very nice relationship too; they talk about consent and have healthy communication which is so refreshing lmao

Warnings: The show does open with a double suicide by gunshot. I won’t say who, but it is in there. The two main characters have flashbacks/PTSD/nightmares (one worse than the other) which you will understand in context if you watch, but it’s definitely worth the watch

Love By Chance

Who stars in it: Perth Tanapon (Ae) and Saint Suppapong (Pete), Mean Phiravich (Tin) and Plan Rathavit (Can). This is the show that is in the same universe as Tharntype, but the actors who play Techno, Tharn, and Type are different actors in this show than from Tharntype. It’s confusing and messy lol

Warning: I’m putting this before the why I like it because I think it’s necessary for this one. I hesitate to even put LBC on here because there is so much of this show that just makes me uncomfortable. When I first watched this show, the second BL I had ever watched, I had no knowledge of BLs, the actors, or really anything to do with any of this world. So, having grown up with film/tv life where every actor is 27 playing 17, it didn’t occur to me that the actor playing 18 would in fact be 17 instead. Perth was I think 17 or possibly 18 while filming (I don’t know exact dates), which includes sexual scenes that I didn’t even feel comfortable watching BEFORE I knew his age, let alone trying to rewatch the series while knowing about it. I am 20, and was 19 last year when I watched this, so it really skeeves me out to watch those kinds of scenes (BL or otherwise) if actors or actresses aren’t at least 18 or 19. It seems weird because I’m 20 and a queer girl, not like a 50 year old pedophile or something like that, but for my own comfort I tend to skip the more explicit stuff. On my first watch, I skipped the Tharntype, TumTar, and Techno storyline because frankly I didn’t care. Going on to watch Tharntype the Series, I was even happier to have skipped so that I didn’t have to go in with a preconceived idea of the characters from having watched LBC. One of the characters in this version of events is raped or coerced into sex; I don’t even know the details because I just couldn’t be bothered to give it a chance. I firmly believe you can watch this show without watching any of their storylines (and skipping over the more sexual stuff, if you feel you have to), which I know sucks to say bc the actors are all good and I like their other work and them as people, but I just couldn’t do it. It is of course up to you.

Why I recommend: Basically I recommend this just for TinCan lmao and on the chance that you do decide to watch Tharntype, it pays at the end to have a knowledge of the LBC characters because again they are in the same universe and it won’t be as cool if you don’t get it right away like WHAT!!! You know haha so yeah There is going to be a season two dropped sometime this year, focused I believe on TinCan, so I’m literally so fucking excited. Dreams are coming true

But yeah, s8 didn’t really give Dean a chance to explore what he’d want beyond just having his family together... before the whole “let’s close up Hell that sounds like a great idea!” plotline kicked in...

It’s easy to see how little Dean still thought of himself when he wanted to be the one to undertake the trials. That whole speech he gives Sam in 8.14 illustrates it pretty well:

Dean: Because of the three trials crap -- God's little obstacle course. We've been down roads like this before, man -- with Yellow-Eyes, Lucifer, Dick friggin' Roman. We both know where this ends -- one of us dies... Or worse.Sam: So, what -- you just up and decided it's gonna be you?Dean: I'm a grunt, Sam. You're not. You've always been the brains of this operation.Sam: Dean--Dean: And you told me yourself that you see a way out. You see a light at the end of this ugly-ass tunnel. I don't. But I tell you what I do know -- it's that I'm gonna die with a gun in my hand. 'Cause that's what I have waiting for me -- that's all I have waiting for me. I want you to get out. I want you to have a life -- become a Man of Letters, whatever. And I mean, they took this one step further in s9 with the whole MoC storyline, but by the end of s8, it was Sam suffering from the trauma of the trials that took this attitude, too... and then in s11 it was Cas’s turn to feel this useless, as if his only contribution could be to sacrifice himself.

(which reminds me of the other anon I have right now... so I’m actually gonna shift gears a bit and paste that one in here, too, even though it’s not technically related to your questions... I hope that’s okay...)

Why do you think Misha keeps saying that he wants/expects the ending will be death/sacrifice for Cas (and sometimes the Winchester brothers alone in the end)? Do you think he still doesn't know the ending, and if so, why doesn't he? I'm honestly not trying to be hateful or negative - they are his actual words after all. It just really gets me down and you always have such insightful answers. I won't mind if you choose not to answer this stuff, I get it, so no pressure.

I’m gonna start by saying that I honestly do not think Misha knows the ending, and as such he’s possibly thinking he’s trying to “soften the blow” if Cas’s story happens to take the darkest of all possible routes. He has attempted to do this for us in the past when he DID know something horrible was gonna happen to Cas. But in this case? I think he really doesn’t know himself.

Another thing I like to constantly remind people is that Misha has said numerous times over the years that he doesn’t watch the show. He finds it too scary. So... while he acts the part of Cas and obviously has a reasonable idea of the story as he’s acting it, I don’t really think he sees the bigger picture, you know?

I would be FASCINATED if he (and even Jensen and Jared) eventually sat down and did a rewatch of the entire series. I’d love to see how their reactions to their own show would change if they just... sat and watched it all instead of being actively involved in the production of it. I would TOTALLY subscribe to that podcast. :’D

I think additionally, part of the problem right now is that Misha keeps getting asked this question over and over, and he doesn’t HAVE a better answer than his own headcanon based on where he sees Cas as a character at this moment. The fact he’s given the same answer several times over the last month or so is depressing af  to people who are probably asking hoping he will give them a different answer this time. Continuing to ask is the definition of madness, folks.

But the very first question he gave that response to wasn’t “how do you see Cas’s story ending,” it was something along the lines of “what would you like to see Cas do that he’s never done before,” and that... is a very different question, you know? In that context, there’s nothing Cas has done more than sacrifice himself this way for everyone else, you know? It’s the definition of redundant. And this show is about growth.

(and that’s why I thought this ask message tied into the first one... because clearly Cas has been there, done that. This would not be new.)

Finally, I’d like to add that even if Misha did know exactly what was gonna happen for the entire rest of the season, he is literally not allowed to tell us. So anything he does say has to be subjected to that filter. Believing we are legit being given actual spoilers and treating early season PR as if it was entirely forthright is just... silly. For the best, and least despairing and least frustrating experience, it’s easiest to smile and nod politely at all PR and then wait and see how the season unfolds.

I know that’s a difficult stance to adopt, but I promise it’s way less awful-feeling in the long run. :D

What do you see as the main differences and similarities between Henry and Matthew? And between Henry and Mary? I'm always struggling to get a firmer grasp on his personality!

Okay, company has gone home, time to tackle some of the asks in my inbox! Starting with the shortest answer.

It’s pretty legit to have trouble getting a handle on Henry’s personality, because it didn’t get much development. I mean, from what I can tell, when they introduced him they thought they’d have more than one season to develop him and I suspect he’s supposed to be a bit more complicated, so he needed more time. The end result is a guy who is understandably (and frustratingly!) hard to pin down beyond “I like cars and this Lady Mary person”.

That said, in order to go into an in depth analysis, I’d have to rewatch the whole series since I watched it over a year ago and there were several seasons between Matthew and Henry, making comparison difficult. I will do what I can here.

Henry seems more like Mary than Matthew. Matthew was a middle class lawyer while Henry was a ‘too far removed to inherit’ aristocrat. He was raised like an aristocrat, he thinks like an aristocrat. Like Mary, he doesn’t show his emotions easily, even though he feels them pretty deeply. Matthew, being from a different culture, was more open and genuine about it all. This made him a better foil for Mary and lead to him encouraging her to grow more as a person, but I suspect would ultimately have lead to more (or at least very different) tensions.

For instance, Matthew wanted to move away from Downton and didn’t understand Mary’s attachment, Henry doesn’t have this problem. He feels like a loser just being dependent on his wife (that’s both a social “the man provides for the woman” thing and a personal “I’m not a lazy, sit around the house bum” thing), but he doesn’t have the problems living in her familiar home so long as he’s actively contributing. Meanwhile, when Mary and Henry butt heads (as all married couples do), I suspect it would be a bit more dramatic since they’re both stubborn af when they want something, as proven by Henry’s refusal to just give things up as a bad job and go find another woman.

Henry and Matthew do have the desire to be active contributors to society in common. They want employment and they know they want employment. There’s a bit of fuss over what that employment will be: Matthew starts off just wanting to continue as a lawyer, then winds up investing in Downton and becoming an estate owner; Henry starts off a race car driver and gives that up for car salesman.

Connected to none of the rest of this, really, it occurs to me that Henry’s fairly slappable “I can only think it’s about the money” was, in reality, less a symptom of how he viewed Mary than a symptom of how he viewed himself and society. That is, she’d told him why she was calling it quits but having been raised in a society where you say what’s polite and acceptable rather than what is true and money is quite the object, it didn’t seem quite true. That is, they read each other enough for him to know she liked him, and it didn’t seem like the death of HIS friend would turn her off as much as the idea of a husband who offered no real value.

Ultimately I think that Henry would probably learn to read Mary a lot faster than Matthew did, because they’re both used to not giving visual queues, so they’re better at reading subtle queues from others. Of course, there will be mistakes and arguments and uncertainties (such as when he’d thought he’d misread her with the car dealership), and he’ll need to learn when to keep a secret (and she will need to learn that ‘excited father’ does not make a good secret keeper, ever!), but I see them as having a very even, probably rather stable relationship, with occasional, potentially colossal explosions of temper to keep things interesting.

And that’s what I have off the top of my head.
