“Hey guys, it’s Johnny.” Johnny greets, waving to the cameras positioned in every angle of the room.

Everybody inside the white-colored film production warehouse were wary of their actions and minimized their voices. Johnny, in their group, is known to be the one who loves photography and film. Everybody knows that he puts a lot of effort when it comes to those two things. To him, it is a privilege to be the one to arrange your wedding video. It was his plan actually— he was the one who suggested it and was willing to create an interview for you and Jaehyun.

Even though you and Johnny were siblings, there are some things he’s willing to learn about you and your relationship with his groupmate, Jaehyun. He was so sure that he isn’t the only one who’s dying to know. He’s sure most of your family and friends are too. Your relationship with Jaehyun, to sum it up, has always been so lowkey and private that even your brother took a few months before he figured that Jaehyun, and you were going out.

“This video isn’t my usual content, this is not JCC or whatever.” he chuckled, holding onto the little script he made, “This is actually a very special video; something I’m sure that I will only create once in a lifetime, so I made sure to put a lot of effort and used all my connections just to make this video. As you can see, we used high-tech cameras!”

“As you all know, my not-so-little-sister is getting married. I still can’t believe it because in my head, she’s still so young. She’s still the little girl I wished to my parents— even though I wanted a baby brother, the heavens gave me a little sister.” Johnny jokes, “Nevertheless, I’m very happy to be her big brother. Though I missed a lot of events in her life because I was building a career in Korea, while she was in Chicago, working hard to enter med school.”

Johnny flips the paper onto the next page, not wanting to be emotional so early. “To my sister, and to my soon-to-be, no, by the time this video is uploaded, my brother-in-law. This is one of my gifts to the both of you.”

You and Jaehyun, hand in hand, enter the warehouse after receiving the cue from the production team, they guide you to the middle of the set where a black couch was placed next to Johnny, who was sitting on a single chair. As soon as you sat down and got comfortable next to your fiancé, you smiled at the camera and to your brother.

“Gee, I can’t believe that my sibling and the person I treated as my brother for years are getting married!” Johnny gagged jokingly, you shot him a threatened look. “I’m just kidding. Please introduce yourself to our viewers.”

You rolled your eyes playfully, “Hi everyone, I’m Y/N Suh, I’m Johnny’s sister.”

“Hi! I’m Jaehyun of NCT, and fortunately, I will be Johnny’s brother-in-law.”

“We’re gonna be stuck with each other forever, dude.” Johnny comments, “Just imagine, you’re marrying my sister. It’s like you’re marrying me as well.”

“Johnny, seriously?”

Your brother chuckles, turning the script to another page. “Back to the main purpose of this video… Could you tell us how long you have been together?”

“We’ve been together for five years.” Jaehyun answered, a little bit shocked by the number.

“I know this question sounds silly, but for the sake of the viewers, how did you two meet?”

“We met after my college graduation,” You answered, “I remember moving to Korea for Med School. Mom, Dad and I thought that it would be better to practice medicine in the country because they planned to move back here once they retire.”

“Okay hold on,” Johnny interrupted, “I thought the reason why you entered Med School here is because our parents had sent you to spy on me!”

“Johnny, I arrived here when you were 26. Did you seriously think mom and dad would still ask me to spy on you when you were that old?”

SIX YEARS AGO.

Johnny called the members of 127 for a ‘short meeting’ at their apartment. The eight men were seated in a circle in the living room, some were on the floor – busy playing and scrolling through their phones while the others took the couch and were talking with each other. Despite his jolly, playful and cheerful personality, Johnny can be intimidating sometimes. Especially when he’s serious. The older boy stood tall in the middle of the living room with his hand shoved in his pocket, his foot anxiously tapping on the floor as he stared at his wristwatch. Any minute now, his little sister will be arriving.

“As you all know, Y/N will be staying with me– us, for a week until she moves into her own apartment. I know we treat each other as brothers, so please… I beg of you all, do not hit on my sister.” Johnny said, putting a stress on each word.

Taeil’s laughter breaks the awkward silence surrounding the room, “I can’t speak for these people, but I won’t hit on Y/N.”

“Taeil promised, you should all promise me as well.” Johnny whined, stomping his foot like a toddler until the members nodded their heads. “Great, she’s in the lobby right now. I’m gonna fetch her. Meeting adjourned!”

When the elevator doors opened, Johnny saw you outside the building, paying the taxi driver. It has been years since he last saw you in person, the last time was in your first year of university. You remember your older brother sulked for a few days when you weren’t able to come home or watch his concert due to hectic schedules at the university. Since then, you only see each other through FaceTime and other social media platforms. Seeing him again after years made you reminisce about the little things you experienced with your brother growing up. Your childhood and teenage years spent with Johnny was fun; he was always that chill, annoying yet protective brother, the one who randomly stared at you just to annoy you, the one who read your middle school diaries, and the one who would never let you forget about the time you slipped on the stairs when you were in high school.

Johnny just couldn’t believe it; you were already finished with university and will be attending medical school. In his eyes, you were still that little girl who stole his lollipop.

“How’s mom and dad? How’s Chicago?” He asked, helping you put your luggages on the trolley.

“They’re fine, mom cried when she and dad dropped me off at the airport.” you answered, “Chicago’s the same. I’m also doing great— not that you asked.”

“Please, don’t you think I know that?” He teased, pushing the trolley to the elevator. “Welcome to Korea, little one. I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you too, dummy. And you’re acting like I haven’t stepped foot in this country, hello? I’ve been here a couple of times!”

Jaehyun and Haechan were the only ones left in the living room, Taeil, Doyoung and Yuta went out for a quick snack run. Taeyong was in his room, making yet another song with Mark, and Jungwoo was sleeping in their shared bedroom on the 10th floor. He isn’t usually the one who stays in the common area of the 5th floor dorm, but because he was watching a series with loud sound effects that would only disturb his roommate, he opted to stay in the living room with the youngest. He was preparing snacks when he heard the front door open, Johnny was back.

“Oh, Jaehyun, you’re still here.” Johnny greets, kicking his shoes off and pushed the trolley inside the room.

“Yeah, Haechan and I are planning to finish the final season of this series we’re watching.” Jaehyun said, smiling at you and offered his hand. “Hi.”

You smiled back, shaking his hand. “Hello, I’m Y/N. Johnny’s—”

“Bup bup bup bup bup!” Your brother removes Jaehyun’s hand from yours and faces you. “You’re tired, it’s past midnight. You need rest.”

“I was actually hoping to eat some ramen—”

Johnny opened the door of his bedroom, gently pushing you inside. He pointed two fingers to his eyes then to Jaehyun’s, “I’m watching you.” he said, closing the door.

The younger man chuckled, holding a bowl of popcorn, and sat next to Haechan. He was about to hit play, but Haechan grabbed the remote control from his hand with a sly smile on his face.

“You like Y/N, don’t you?”

“What are you on, Haechan?” Jaehyun laughed, “I’m not, I’m just being friendly to let her know she’s welcome here.”

Haechan shook his head, not satisfied with Jaehyun’s answer. “Please, I’ve known you for so long. Your smile and the little ‘hi’ basically tells me that you like her.”

Jaehyun shook his head, took the remote from the youngest’s hand and played the video. Jaehyun was a hundred percent sure he doesn’t like you, he made a promise to Johnny that he wouldn’t hit on you. Besides, this was the first time he’s seen you in person.

“You’re thinking about her, aren’t you?”

“Damn it, Haechan!”

“I didn’t actually expect him to be the one you’re dating, Y/N. I was thinking it was Mark at first because they were the same age and were always so close whenever he had movie nights at the dorm or her apartment,” Johnny said, earning a laugh from Jaehyun. “And even though I don’t want to admit it, Y/N and Jaehyun hiding their relationship from me made me sulk for a week.”

“What do you mean ‘a week’? You didn’t bother talking to me for almost a month!”

“The viewers don’t need to know that Y/N!”

Jaehyun laughs next to you as he watches you and Johnny bicker. “Do you remember the time we won a daesang? You invited Y/N to join us for dinner, right?” Jaehyun chimes in, “You were confused that we came in together at the restaurant.”

“Yeah, because Y/N told me you and her coincidentally met at a coffee shop.”

“We went out for a movie that day.”

Johnny gasps dramatically, “IS THIS WHAT BETRAYAL FEELS LIKE?”

“We weren’t dating at the time yet, Jae!” You said, “We went out to see a movie as friends.”

“HOLD ON, YOU WERE FRIENDS?!”

“What? Your friends can’t be my friends?”

It was one of those days where you randomly visit your brother and the members, random, surprise visits because most of your time is spent inside the lecture hall— learning about human anatomy and biochemistry. Five months have passed since you moved from Chicago to Seoul, it was a big change for you. From the environment to the people around you. The members have accepted and treated you like their own sister, often messaging you and asking how you were doing. Medical school is hard; harder than it was when you were a pre-med student. You were surviving off of take-out and instant foods. Doyoung and Taeyong were nice enough to serve you home cooked meal, reminding you of the time where your mom would visit you at the university and bring you your favorite meal.

It happens that one of those days, Jaehyun had asked you out for a movie. He happened to see you walking with a bunch of pizza boxes in the hallway and decided to shoot his shot. You were so confused at first - why did he ask you? Was it a date? A friendly date or a potential-lover type of date? And even though you tell your brother almost everything, you opted not to tell him this one. You were sure that Johnny would go crazy and be mad, but if things go south with Jaehyun, you wouldn’t worry about any possible situation about those two. You didn’t want to ruin the bond they created for years just because things didn’t go the way you expected.

Despite his and your busy schedule, always clashing against each other, you finally set a date. The day after they won a daesang. It was kind of a double celebration for Jaehyun, one, they won a great award. Two, he was finally going out on a date with you. He rented a whole cinema, good for two movies— one movie was the latest Spiderman, the other was his favorite movie.

“Jaehyun, what are we?” You asked, turning to look at him, who was busy munching on snacks. “You asked me out on a date, you take me here, in an empty cinema. Why… why are you doing this?”

Jaehyun stopped, he could feel himself break a cold sweat. “We… We are friends, aren't we?”

“Yeah, I guess.” You replied, returning your attention back to the screen. “Friends.”

After the movie, since you agreed to have dinner with the boys to commemorate their recent win, you and Jaehyun headed off to the restaurant. Johnny had his eyebrow raised when he saw you two enter the private room together, but you brushed it all off by saying that you saw each other at a coffee shop nearby and decided to come together. Satisfied, your brother nodded his head and offered you a seat next to him.

“How was it?” Haechan asked the older man, keeping his tone as low as possible.

He sighs, “I think I blew it off. She asked what we were, I got too scared to confess and told her we were friends.”

“Oh yeah you did blow it off,”

“Why are you guys whispering? Care to share?” Mark chimes in, curious as to why the two guys have their heads close to each other.

Haechan and Jaehyun shared a look, deciding whether to let Mark in on their little secret or not. The two got quiet as if they were conversing telepathically. “Oh, come on, are you gonna tell me or not?” Mark whined.

“Promise me you’ll keep this a secret? Only you, Haechan and I know about this.”

“I don’t remember the two of you having a conversation with each other.” Johnny interrupts Jaehyun’s story, “It was always Y/N and Mark or Y/N and Haechan because they’re closer in age. I assumed it was Mark because you’re the same age, Y/N!”

“Yeah, those two actually helped us get closer.” You answered, “Haechan always teased Jaehyun about liking someone whenever I’m around. I thought you knew or at least got the hint from it.”

“I did notice that Haechan did that a lot, but I just assumed he did that to annoy Jaehyun.”

“He dropped a lot of hints, John. Even Mark. Like a lot.”

“Haechan knew that I asked Y/N out on a date, by the way.” Jaehyun said, “Haechan, if you’re watching this— thank you so much, bro.”

“Haechan, you… I can’t believe it. He and I were roommates at the time!”

Weeks have passed since the date happened; you never saw Jaehyun again after that. Returning to your old lives, him preparing for a concert, and you studying. You planned to avoid Jaehyun for as long as you can, but your plans were interrupted when your mom asked you to bring some things to your brother.

“Hey, Y/N. What brings you to SM?” Mark asked, pressing the elevator button, and stood next to you.

“Ah, mom sent this care package and a few baby pictures of Johnny today. I’m dropping them off before I head out of town.”

The elevator door opens, Mark, being the gentleman he was, lets you ride first and pressed the button of the designated floor the two of you were going. The ride on the lift wasn’t awkward at all, Mark was telling you a funny story of how Johnny tripped during practice the other day and other things to keep you company. And as you reach the top floor, he asked you a question.

“Are you and Jaehyun a thing?”

Maybe your heart skipped a beat, you were taken aback. Were you two really a thing? Because aside from that movie ‘date’ and Jaehyun asking you out, you didn’t have any interactions anymore. You shook your head, stepping out of the elevator, “Why’d you ask?”

“I know you and him went out for a movie— Spiderman, right?” Your eyes widened, “Don’t worry, as much as I am close to Johnny, I won’t tell him anything that happened between you and Jaehyun. Your secret’s safe with me.”

“I don’t know what we are, Mark. I asked him what we were, and he replied we’re friends.” stated you, “I’m not really good at reading people, so I don’t know what’s going on inside his head.”

Mark nodded his head, satisfied with the answer he got from you. When he pushed the door of the practice room open, you were greeted by the members and your brother. He took the small box from your grasp, opening it and grabbed a few photographs. Johnny proudly showed the members the photographs from his childhood and yours, laughing and telling memories you shared in Chicago.

“Johnny, I have to go. I still have to pack my things for Busan.”

“Oh, I almost forgot.” Johnny said, standing up, “Do you want me to drive you there? How long are you going to stay there?”

“No need, my classmate already offered me a ride. We’re using his car.”

“‘His’? You’re going with your boyfriend?” Your brother teased, “Finally— someone keeping my sister late at night!”

You rolled your eyes, taking your bag from him. “The only thing that’s keeping me up at night are the books that cost much more than my monthly rent.”

“How long are you staying in Busan, Y/N?” asked Haechan, then looked at Jaehyun with a grin.

“Two weeks? Maybe even three.”

Jaehyun chokes on the water he was drinking, wetting his shirt, that long? You’ll be gone that long? ‘Why do I even bother, it’s not like I see her every day. It’s gonna be fine, she’s not dating that guy, and she’s coming back.’ Jaehyun reassured himself, “I’m gonna- I’m gonna go to the bathroom.” He said, rushing to the door.

You said goodbye to the members, walking faster towards the elevator to avoid Jaehyun - your number 1 agenda. But damn, time and the universe were playing with you. Despite your fast-paced walk, Jaehyun managed to follow you to the elevator, even barely getting inside as he entered when the door was almost a few inches close. You stare at him, waiting for some sort of explanation. Jaehyun, the person who’s confident around thousands, millions even, of fans got all shy and awkward around you. He couldn’t find the right words.

As the number on top of the door decreases, so does Jaehyun’s time to talk to you. His solution? Pressed the emergency button, causing the elevator to stop in the middle of the building.

“Jaehyun, what the—”

“Give me a few seconds to talk, please.” He blurted; you nodded your head. “First off, I’m sorry I said that we’re only friends a few weeks ago. The truth is I like you; I really like you and I’m just… I’m a coward and I’m scared that maybe you don’t feel the same with me. I like you since Johnny showed me a picture of you graduating. It was a happy crush at first, but I couldn’t stop thinking about you when you arrived in Korea months ago. I’m so dumb, I never should’ve said that we’re only friends, I should’ve confessed to you that night, but I was… actually I’m just scared of Johnny.”

You chuckled, “You like me? Like, you really like me?”

“I do. I really do.”

“So, after the two of you got stuck in the elevator… you’ve been dating since then?”

You shook your head, “You know that episode on The Big Bang Theory where Leonard and Penny were trying again for their relationship, so they agreed to have some sort of beta test.” You explained, “That’s how we did it. We realized we don’t know each other personally so we did the relationship beta test as a way to get to know each other.”

“We started dating officially by the end… I think it was her finals during her first year in Med School.”

“Mhm, and remember when you visited me at my place while I was studying and you asked why I wouldn’t let you inside my room because it was a mess?”

“Yeah, what about it?”

“It’s because Jaehyun was inside my room.”

| Jaehyun: Have you eaten yet?

| Y/N: Not yet. Studying for finals tomorrow.

“Where are you going?” asked Taeyong, making all the heads of the present members who were watching a movie in the living room turn around.

“Uh, out? For a walk.”

“It’s 12 o’ clock.”

“Yeah, I uh— uh… had a big meal, gonna walk as an exercise.”

What a lame excuse, Jaehyun. He thought, but they bought it. He slipped on a pair of shoes and a mask, carefully closing the front door. Since you and Jaehyun agreed to do this relationship beta test, things have been going on so well and you were getting to know each other better. It’s been a few months since this started. As the day goes by, Jaehyun gets scared that you might get tired and eventually call it quits. He has been meaning to ask you the question you have been avoiding, but the thing is, he doesn’t know when to ask you. He did try once, when you were filled up with wine and fell asleep on the couch. He didn’t receive any answer from you then.

He knows your routine during exams, study for 18 hours, eat for one, sleep for five. And that cycle repeats for a week or two during exam season. As tiring as his job can be, Jaehyun has no idea how you can survive that kind of routine. To ensure that you were eating, Jaehyun brought a bunch of healthy take-outs. And since you don’t want to be bothered while studying, Jaehyun knew the passcode of your apartment (which you gave with your consent). He prepares the table for you, leaving a space for your notes and books on the dining table, a few inches away from the food.

“I smelled spicy soup,” you said, walking towards the dining table with a handful of papers in your hand.

Jaehyun turns off the stove, transfers the soup to a bowl and serves it to you. “Alright missy, papers down, spoon’s up.”

You giggle at his remark, placing the papers on the table and took a sip of the flavorful soup. While eating, Jaehyun offered to help you memorize some terminologies from your paper, helping you refresh your memory.

“You know, I’ve been thinking about our whole beta test thingy.” You say, completely ignoring Jaehyun’s question regarding anatomy. “Maybe we should um… stop it?”

“Huh? All of a sudden? D-did I do something wrong?”

You shook your head, putting away the spoon. “No, no, it’s not that it’s… I think it’s time for us to be real, you know? Let’s put a label on this relationship even though it’s a secret. Because starting today, you are my...” You smiled, taking his hand. “Boyfie.”

Stunned, Jaehyun was frozen. ‘Is this real? Am I dreaming?’ he thought, his mouth dropped slightly as you giggled out of happiness. “Am I—”

Jaehyun’s sentence was cut off when the doorbell rang. Confused, you let go of his hand and walked towards the door, peeking through the small peep hole only to see your brother standing outside. ‘Shit.’ You thought, rushing back to the kitchen where your now boyfriend was still frozen on the spot.

“You have to hide.”

“What—”

“Johnny’s outside, you have to hide.” You panicked, taking his arm and forcing him to walk towards your bedroom. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know he was coming. Or if you don’t want to hide, we can uh… tell him the truth now?”

“I don’t think now’s the right time, we literally just started dating.” He said, sitting on your bed.

“Okay, stay here. Lock the door, and don’t make any noise, okay?”

Hours have passed since you started filming and it felt like the interview wasn't coming to an end. It was nice reminiscing your memories with Jaehyun, because starting in a few weeks, you will spend forever with this man and build new memories together. Johnny flips his script down to the last page, smiling from ear to ear as he looks at the content written.

“I’ve been saving this question, because you know what they say, save the best for the last. Props, please bring the headphones here.”

The staff hands Johnny a pair of headphones, lending it for you to wear. “I want the two of you to hear each other’s answers on your wedding day. It’ll be special, trust me. I’m a romanticist.”

You rolled your eyes and chuckled, taking the headphones from him and listened to the music playing. You looked up to your brother and gave him a thumbs up, signifying that you couldn’t hear them talking anymore.

“Why her?” Johnny asked.

Jaehyun looks at you with a big smile on his face, squeezing your hand before looking back to your brother. “She had me at hello, Johnny.” He answered, “I know it wasn’t cool of me to break the bro code, especially rule number 1: sisters are off-limits. But when I saw her, I was stunned. I was mesmerized. And I know this would sound crazy, but… the moment I saw her? I knew she was the one. She’s like the iced coffee I drink on a hot summer day, or the hot chocolate I love during winter. She… she makes me feel special, wanted, loved— everything. I care about her; I care about her more than I care about myself. I love the little things about her, like when we’re having a little date night at her place or mine. I love seeing her eyes sparkle whenever she sees my collection of vinyl or wine or watching some old 70’s romantic movies. I love seeing her so happy whenever we see dogs across the street. And I love how strong she is. She’s my everything, bro, I can’t imagine my life without her. She’s my happiness.”

“You’re in love, Jae.” Johnny expressed, “Thank you for loving my sister. She deserves your love, and you deserve hers.”

The staff offers Jaehyun a pair of headphones, taking away yours. When Jaehyun gave Johnny the signal, he nodded his head and let out a deep, heavy sigh. He threw his head back, wiping the tears from his eyes. “Y/N…” Your brother started, “I, damn it, I can’t believe I’m crying. I just want to say how happy I am for you. Pre-med school, med school, and now you’re in residency and about to tie the knot.”

You take a handkerchief from your pockets, lending it to your brother. “We always knew that this day would come, Johnny. I’m always going to be the Suhs’ baby girl, even if I’m getting married. Until I grow old and get wrinkles and stuff.”

“I know…” He sniffed, “My question is, why him? Why Jaehyun?”

“People always say you get butterflies or fireworks when you see someone you like, when you talk to them, when you hold their hand. It wasn’t like that with Jaehyun.” You answered, “I feel comfort when I’m with him, whenever I hold his hand in a terrifying situation, I calm down. In messy situations, I look for him, and he would be there for me. That’s it, I knew what I was into, I knew he was the one. Although from the very beginning, it was messy— we didn’t know what we were, we didn’t know things about each other. It’s the little things that made me fall in love with him. It’s his actions, it’s his words of affirmation. The thought of marrying him puts me at peace. We may have hit bumps in our relationship but at the end of the day, we have each other.”

“Like mom and dad?”

You nodded, “Falling in love with him wasn’t exactly falling. It was like walking inside a house and knowing that you’re home. He’s my happiness.”

After the interview, you and Jaehyun walk out of the production warehouse hand in hand and head to the almost empty parking space. The sky was dark and cloudy, lightning might’ve appeared somewhere, and the rain started pouring. Falling in love with Jaehyun was like a dream, it feels surreal, it feels unbelievable. Suddenly, Jaehyun was holding your waist while the other was still in your hand. He was swaying your bodies to the imaginary music he had in his head.

Dancing in the pouring rain, Jaehyun was holding you tight. Giggling as you dance, not giving a damn about your wet clothes or the fact that the production team was watching the two of you in admiration. He smiled at you, planting a kiss on your cheek before saying: “Our new beginning starts now,”

other newt and i have a long and intricate ritualistic battle to become the alpha newt, but i gotta give credit where it’s due. if you like to annotate your books for fun, this fic will give you a looooong comment you’ll want to write, and for good reason! there’s a lot of really well done metaphor and character detail in here, while still keeping a very soft, melancholy but with a hopeful edge tone. and also, like, the care and detail in which newt’s mental state in the aftermath of the precursors’ abuse is depicted is so so good, and delightful to read

i’m just gonna paste the comment i left on it here, because that sums up what is so absolutely incredible about this fic the best:

so sometimes you stumble on a piece of fiction that you add to your little collection of stuff you would show a person if you wanted them to understand a part of you that you can't quite explain eloquently, or it would take too long, etc etc, and i've never really found something like that for my autism until now, which, like, poggers. and i'll be as straight up as i can while still being the biggest lesbian in the great state of ohio (not a hard feat but alan invented computers so i love continuing on the autistic tradition of being a living miracle), the chameleon effect hit me like a mack truck. catholic school in the deep south is the most potent and effective form of ABA therapy imaginable :/. so sometimes i wonder what i would be like if i didn't have such a strong ability to pass, and here's where we finally get to the part of this comment where i just vomit compliments at you: you nailed it. you got it. i don't know if you're on the spectrum, but either way, well fucking done. trauma therapy research talks a lot about healing fantasies, which are fantasies, usually in the form of daydreams, that abused/neglected/traumatized/etc people create that directly address a struggle they have and take the form of a scenario in which that struggle is helped in some way. it could be an abusive parent repenting and showering them with the love they never had, or someone finding them during a panic attack and somehow knowing how best to comfort them without having to ask, or being intimate with someone and having a scar or physical deformity they've been shamed for be given attention and care. and i think you have created the ultimate perfect healing fantasy for autistic people, or at least those with """"high functioning"""" autism. it has a character who is visibly and undeniably on the spectrum having the pain and trauma going through life like that causes being acknowledged and validated, they are purposefully paid attention to because person b genuinely likes them and wants to understand and respect who they are and how they function in the world, and thus get The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known as well as the eventual rewards of being loved, person b makes a genuine effort to help teach them social skills in a way they can understand and learn through and is there for them when these skills are being practiced, their space and boundaries are respected but they aren't infantilized or thought of as an emotionless robot, and they receive love and comfort on their own terms not despite of but because of who they are, even specifically being asked not to change the way they are because that way is lovable. they are openly desired. writing is my fucking JOB and it's still difficult to put into words how much you got 100000% right about the dream with this fic. i have been in the EXACT and i mean EXACT same situation as hermann when he asked newt if it was his personality itself that made people not like him, because i deadass made a spreadsheet of all my personality attributes i thought could be preventing me from making friends in college, and then asked my fellow nd friend to see if there was anything i was missing. so i guess what i'm trying to say is that this amazing, and i'm bookmarking it and putting it on my next fic rec post, and maybe one day way way in the future if i ever get a partner i want to explain the whole autism thing to, i'm gonna have them read this.

storytime: i read this fic a few years ago, completely forgot the title and author, and ended up thinking about the part where hermann admits to having fucked a trailer hitch when he was a teenager, at least once a week. last november, i say to my friend samara on twitter, head of the BSHCU (buttslut hermann cinematic universe), hey this seems like something you’d have read, do you remember a fic where... and samara says FUCK i do know what you’re talking about lemme find it. so if the fact that i have been looking for this fic for like, two years, and that it contains a moment so iconic all i had to say is, “hermann says he fucked a trailer hitch” and she IMMEDIATELY knew what i was talking about, does not convince you to read this... go back to catholic school i guess.

fics where newt goes back to work as a biologist, especially a xenobiologist, post pru are really interesting, and usually have something neat to say about recovery, how it isn’t linear, how it often involves us returning to things we love for comfort, etc. this one sure does! some good emotional and physical h/c, LOVE the use of the ghost drift, and it’s always fun to see post pru fics use dialogue very obviously taken from dbt, trauma-specific therapeutical texts, and anything that shows the author has experience with, or did their research on, ptsd therapies.

The first fanfiction i read was for The Lunar Chronicles when I was like 11?? and it was 100% on accident and it scarred me because it was a hardcore porn one with a period kink and i was like WHAT IS THIS??? OH MY GOD???? LMAOOOOO i didn’t pick it back up until i was 13-14 and really got into the Fairy Tail fandom. I still reread my favorites on ff.net cause i love them.

As for writing, I wrote a horrible, terrible x-men fanfiction when I was twelve. Omniscient third person. I don’t like it. Like I can understand that it can be a little hard to stay in one person’s perspective but, in my opinion, if you can, it shows how disciplined you are as a writer. Plus, i just get so confused when I go from A’s thoughts to suddenly what B is thinking about A.

@writer168 idk if they’re really “underrated” but THEY HAVE SUCH GREAT FICS ON AO3. Like theres an AU with sakura, kiba, and shino that i reread constantly because it just. is. so. fucking. GOOD. and they posted a new one that i’m YELLING about.

@eggtoasties okay they only have 2 in the naruto fandom (one shisaku which is still ongoing) BUT THEIR WRITING STYLE IS SO NICE?? I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I still go back and reread their shikasaku one cause UGH i can’t get enough. I love it.

Character: SAKURA. I will read anything with Sakura as the main character and her being a fuckin badass or becoming a badass. I love her.

17. How obsessively do you sit and stare at your fic after you’ve just posted and wait for feedback?

aha.. haha.. well. I check my email like three times an hour. its the first thing i check in the mornings too. I’m literally a whore for praise and literally eat up feedback like its going out of style. I also reread a lot of my stuff because i make so many mistakes and spelling errors, or the spacing is weird oR SOMETHING. plus, literally any and all comments make my day, i go back and reread them cause they just make me feel so tingly and warm like “wow. this person enjoyed the fic/my writing enough to tell me. thats HUGE!”

23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write?

Angry, feral, bloodied, morally gray women. They aren’t bad guys, they’re probably the good guy, but that doesn’t mean they cant be fucking raging at the world with raw knuckles and blood on their teeth. I just love an angry woman who struggles with her emotions and just has so much inner conflict but that doesn’t take away from her character or badassery, it adds to it.

24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write?

The fake dating or miscommunication troupe. LIKE GUYS JUST TALK. AND TELL EACH OTHER OMFG. the entire like obliviousness of “nah they dont like me” while the They holds their hand and kisses their cheek. MOFO WHAT. it makes me so impatient and like mad HAAHHAHA. its probably because i’m a pretty confrontational person so seeing stuff like that just “cmon bro, USE YO HEAD.”

28. How do you deal with writing pressure (ie: pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc)?

I have yet to receive a negative comment! Which i was really surprised about tbh. As for deadlines or pressure to update, i just kind of do whatever. I do set goals, but i set them flexible enough that hey, if i can’t do it, that’s okay.

I have a lot of mini goals, like “i want to write this chapter and get it done this week” and then the large goal is “FINISH BY END OF MAY” so i have time.

Actually, now that I think on it, the entire pressure to update thing is probably why i’m waiting until I have all of OL&W written to post it weekly,, cause well. I wouldn’t wanna leave you guys waiting as I tried to write and work out the next chapters and stuff, you know?

34. How much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? What do you think your readers’ image of you is?

None of my experiences match up to anything I write tbh,,, probably the only thing that is me in my writing is maybe the emotional turmoil? I’m pretty emotionally and mentally mature because from a pretty young age i started forming my own opinions, started looking into the world around us and being like “dude what the fuck this is not what disney advertised”. Then i started talking (read: arguing and debating) with my dad about a lot of it. So, like emotions are kind of hard for me. Like i’m pretty good at controlling them or understanding them, but still. idk its hard to explain ig.

Like the weight of stress, the anger, the sadness. It’s kind of therapeutic to write. Cause i don’t know how to put those feelings to verbal words so writing them really helps.

As for my readers’ image? Probably like some kind of hunched over figure typing away in the dark with a maniacal grin on their face. I honestly don’t know AHHAHAHA but it is fun to think about. I think they’d see me as someone with potential but a lot of room to grow and someone who is imperfect but in a charming way LMAOOOO

38. What does your writing process look like? How chaotic is it on a scale of 1 (very tame) to 10 (you can’t handle this kind of chaos)?

I’m gonna be real honest. Its probably like a 2. I’m a bit of a control freak so I almost always go in chronological order, my writing is pretty linear. Unless, i get bored and jump to one of my fav parts. It's pretty much i sit down, i open the doc, read over my notes and just start writing.

It’s a little boring to explain AHAHAHA but once i get into the groove of things its really fucking great, I can like feel myself in the world, I can feel what i want the characters to, i love it. I catch myself mouthing the words as i type too, which i find hilarious.

39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

I rather like how raw my writing is sometimes. Which might sound really vain, but i do like the way i word things or describe things. I love juxtaposition and repetition, or making a good ole circle back to some minute detail that wouldn’t stand out until i repeat it at the end and you’re like “omg” AHAHAHAHA.

Like those little poetic snippets or certain wording i just sit back and go “damn thats kinda good nadia! go you!’ HAHAHA

40. How did you come up with the idea for The Intimacy Of Being Understood?

AAAAA this fic is like my first child, my pride and joy LMAO

so the idea initially came when i was reading some fic, idk if it was even naruto, but i was like “i don't like this, but i do like the rain symbolism.” And I knew i wanted to write something kind of slow paced, something a little sad and angsty, but would show KakaSaku slowly but surely falling in love.

Idk if you’ve noticed but a lot of my fics, the pairings don’t change each other dramatically. They accept each other as they are and then they grow with together. Like that acceptance is something i just love writing, its so subtle, it isn’t something you declare. Its simply “I am going to love you. I am going to love you despite your flaws and faults. I am going to love you unconditionally because I know you, I understand you, and there is nothing you could do to drive me away.”

The fic kind of wrote itself after that first scene. I kept going back to the rain, go being ghosts, and resurrection, and the small epiphanies one gets. I wanted to focus on each character’s growth with each other. They didn’t find light in life because of each other, but with each other. And i think that’s my favorite thing about that fic.

I wanted something raw and real and just something beautiful. I’m actually really proud of it tbh. Would i go back and rewrite/edit it? Oh of course! I’d do that with every single one of my fics, but i’m not gonna cause i think its in its rawest form right now. :))))

i would very much like to YAY thank u!!! i’m gonna uh.... ramble. because i am excited to be asked. my personal list don’t take it too seriously

1. capaldi. i love him So Much. it breaks my heart so many ppl gave up before his run, or while it was still in its early stages. among dw fans who still watch the show he’s generally already considered an iconic doctor. you hear a lot of people saying they regret not appreciating him until he was gone which i 100% feel. he was a who fan his entire life (the fanmail he wrote as a teen is so cute) and he poured so much love into the role!!! maybe didn’t have the best writing at the start but he more than makes up for it with his fucking phenomenal acting ability and pure LOVE for the doctor’s character! his arc too is the most touching for me.... he’s the doctor who finally heals. he starts off so jaded and almost seems cruel. i think that’s why so many people were turned off from him initially. but, after watching his entire run, you realise that was set up for a masterful arc abt healing and kindness and learning to laugh again. the pure love between him and bill, his unrelenting faith in missy..... “laugh hard, run fast, be kind” is the best fucking dw quote don’t even LOOK at me

2. tennant. sad man runs around being sad, stands in rain, grieves over all that genocide he committed, generally looks like a kicked puppy at every given chance. we love to see it! his relationships with his companions make him so damn real, maybe the realest of all the new who doctors. i love him dearly. my favourite thing about him is that he does have terrible moments of arrogance and they’re called out and his arc is about acknowledging that he’s not all-powerful (waters of mars i loooove yoooouuu). i love to make fun of him and i also want to hug him

3. smith. funny, tumblr hates him lmao. most people i ask irl here in br*tain will either say tennant or smith as their fave in a 50/50 split (maybe favouring tennant slightly). matt was the first doctor that made me want to watch the show, age 7 and sitting down for his first ever ep :’) so he’s special to me i can’t help it!!! his first series, s5, is the most cohesive series in the whole of new who imo. it’s the series i always rec to ppl who wanna start the show bc it knows what it wants to do and generally all the episodes are mid to high tier doctor who (except the winston churchill daleks one, good fucking god). when i learnt that tennant is “the man who regrets” while smith is “the man who forgets” it helped me understand him much better.... he desperately wants to bury that past but he can’t run forever. his final episodes lose it a bit but i don’t think he deserves the distaste so many on here seem to have for him. his writing suffers from feeling a bit contrived so that’s probably part of it

4. eccelston. important thing to keep in mind is that he got only one series and in that time he made such an impression as his own doctor!!! if he had more time he’d probably be higher on my list. “just this once, everybody lives” stays in my mind RENT FREE... it sums up how painfully tired he is—the post-time war doctor, fresh with hopelessness and loss and he’s so elated to save everyone, just once, even if it never ever happens again. his hearts are so big and so are his ears :]

5. whittaker. she’s on the bottom of my list but that doesn’t mean i dislike her! i love her, actually! her first series however is the worst in the whole of new who because of its disaster writing, imo. worse than series 7, yes, bc at least series 7 had some fun episodes at the start. i seriously don’t believe that chibnall has a vision for the show, just a mish-mash of done before ideas he doesn’t know how to string together into a plot or characters that actually feel like family. but enough of chibnall, whittaker is so FUN as the doctor!!! she’s everything i wanted from a post-capaldi doctor, who ended his run choosing to be kind. whittaker continues that legacy by smiling and being a Literal Ball of Sunshine <333 although i was worried at first she wouldn’t get much depth beyond that, series 12 made my desire for her as the certified repression doctor CANON!!!! i have my issues with s12 but im so so excited for the upcoming series!

ok so I was scrolling though your blog trying to see if there were any more parts to the dp comic and I saw your tags talking about you forcibly ordaining a friend during a flirt fight??? I NEED the context for this, I am begging you

ah, yeah. that.

there was. a lot going on there, and i don’t remember how much i included in the tags, but basically back during junior year there was this cute guy, right. i’d liked him since the previous year, which he knew already because i told him the exact second i figured out it wasn’t a stomach bug (i am very stupid) but he explained that for various reasons he wasn’t in a good place to date at the time, so i dropped it.

but then we started hanging out all the time, and he seemed to be fairly miffed about the fact that he kept wanting to hang out with me, and i kept trying to politely but firmly explain to him that he was my boyfriend, which caused our dynamic to devolve into what i can only imagine was a completely insufferable amount of passive-aggressive flirting.

the other major piece of this is that all my closest college friends have/had a shared group chat, and there was a running Thing where we’d use the ‘request money’ feature to demand compensation for emotional damages when someone said or did something stupid.

one day he broke the seal and actually paid the requested money, and things sorta got out of hand. there was an increasing amount of money being chucked back and forth, and we were both broke as hell so it was not really very wise. at some point one of my friends starts telling me how unwise i’m being so i send her money too, and then there’s more money flying around, and someone tells me and cute boy to get a room. my specific social circle is chill but our college is near like, satire levels of conservative christian so someone else sarcastically says we aren’t allowed to get a room unless we get married first, at which point another friend points out that if anyone in our group was ordained we could do that.

up until this point i had been alone in a rec center with yet another friend, but suddenly Boy comes storming in from across campus, sits down across the table from us, looks me dead in the eye and dms me ‘wanna make out’ to which i reply we can’t because we’re not married. meanwhile the terrible, wretched enablers back in the main group chat have discovered the price of those online ordinations you can buy, so he sends a third of that sum to my best friend (who i believe was asleep in his dorm at the time) with a memo somewhere along the lines of ‘priest money’. i pitch in just slightly more money than he did, and he tries to one up me again but his card gets declined. at this point Best Friend is awake and begrudgingly agrees to the ordination if he gets the money. i tell him that sadly Boy is just too much of a coward to send any more money tonight, at which point Boy sprints out of the rec center. a few minutes later Best Friend informs the chat that he has barged into his room with the remaining money in cash, and true to his word purchases himself a priesthood. i don’t really remember what happened after that tbh, just that almost everyone else in the group chat eventually trailed into the rec center by the time he got back. the presence of other friends and the successful acquisition of a priesthood had mostly diffused the tension, so i count the whole ordeal unsuccessful in terms of flirting, but it was pretty fun and we all wound up eating mozzarella sticks in a parking lot at 1am so overall i give it 4 stars.

as for the dp comics there’s at least one more part i want to make, but it’s gonna be a minute because umbrella academy, sorry i do not control the draw 😔

Hey, any comic recs to ensure that I get Dick Grayson character right? Other batfam included, if you're willing. I'm trying to make sure I don't write a character completely ooc, because that drives me up the WALL when I read that. However, since I dubbed you the #1 Dick Grayson person, I thought I'd ask you to make sure I do him justice rather than a smear campaign or something lol! Thanks! ALSO TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE TITANS SHOW! That's all xD

LOL thanks I appreciate it, but while I’m good for the rants, for actual comics recs I would go to the likes of @northoftheroad, @hood-ex, and @nightwingmyboi because they’re a lot better than I am at knowing where to find specific stuff and comprehensive reading lists! I tend to jump all over the place in terms of my go-to comics for Dick.....I’m always on about Robin: Year One but I’m like eh Nightwing: Year One is pretty trash tbh. I prefer pre-Flashpoint continuity overall but I did enjoy some of the early Nightwing Rebirth stuff and before that the pre-Forever Evil New 52 stuff had some good beats. But for the most part, my favorite Dick Grayson tends to be him as a member of teams like the Titans....he shines most in ensembles, I think, because his strengths ultimately are that like...he gets people, he knows how people work, and he knows how to get the most out of the people he’s with, how to make people gel and get in sync and become more than just the sum of their parts.

(Speaking of nightwingmyboi, haven’t seen them posting in awhile, anyone know what they’re up to? Hope everything’s okay!)

Which brings me to the problems with the Titans show. There’s a lot I like about it - Anna Diop and Ryan Potter in particular - and a lot I was never gonna like about it - I’m heavy on the Ugh why must Dick Grayson be a cop ever why is that a thing make it stop. And so while I don’t think Brenton Thwaites does like, a bad job with the role or anything, there was always kinda a ceiling on how attached to or invested in his take on the character I was ever gonna reach.

But Season 2. Oof. Let’s talk about Season 2, and how so many of the problems with it are identical to the problems that surround Dick in the comics, but also aren’t limited to just his character or DC and just as equally show up in all kinds of media. Like, I could have (and probably did) offer an identical rant about the role of Scott McCall in TW’s S5.

The problem is one I’ve kinda taken to calling in my head “The Ensemble Lone Wolf Effect.”

This is when writers have a character they nominally want to be part of an ensemble....but that they repeatedly go back to the well of “this character should however spend most of their time on their own, or are more natural on their own, or just wants to be on their own, or also sometimes they just deserve to be on their own cuz they suck for Reasons we decline to specify.”

But its that thing of wanting it both ways....believing a character honestly NEEDS to be a loner or off on their own for the sake of their story, but also still wanting to utilize them as part of an ensemble, not willing to actually MAKE them a solo character, and so it kinda creates this never-ending feedback loop wherein they pay lip service to the character being part of an ensemble, but that’s never really on display, which creates a lot of unnecessary conflict among characters that’s to NONE of their benefits.

(And honestly in the comics, you could apply this to pretty much all the Batfam at times...not just Dick. They do it with Bruce ALL the time, they’re doing it with Damian right now, did it with Tim with Red Robin, Jason most of the time he’s not with the Outlaws and Cass most of the time she’s not with Babs or Steph or the Outsiders. As well as Babs herself at times).

Basically what I’m talking about here is like....so much of the drama in S2....and specifically the parts that most every fan I saw had issues with....came about not organically, because it made sense for the characters to behave that way, but solely in order to launch a specific plot, that the writers clearly wanted for S2:

And that was Dick Grayson off on his own, at his lowest, facing his demons on a solo journey of self-discovery the writers clearly deemed necessary before he could find himself as Nightwing and rise to his most heroic self.

Now the thing is....this isn’t inherently a bad plot or a problem. The problem lies in how they went about it.

Because rather than looking at the overall story and saying okay, that’s what we want to do with Dick Grayson, that’s what we want for HIS story, now how do we get that and where do we take it from there, rather than looking at that as just a STARTING point, and engineering a plot that grows OUT of that.....

The writers just started out by viewing that as an ENDPOINT, and reverse engineered a way to get Dick TO that point first and foremost....at the expense of so many characters who then basically turned on him and held him solely responsible for the things many of them also had a hand in....purely to get him off on his own and isolated.

But that was never necessary!

Because Dick’s character contains multitudes when it comes to guilt and self-blame, everyone knows that. He never needed anyone else to blame him for what happened to Joey because he blamed himself. So the second they conceived of the plot “Slade wants revenge for something Dick at least blames himself for”.....they had all the ingredients needed for Dick to decide proactively that the best way to protect everyone was to put distance between him and them, that he should try and hunt down Slade on his own, solve this between just the two of them.

And that should have been the STARTING point, for that narrative journey of self-exploration, not that journey resulting as an ENDPOINT in and of itself from Dick being FORCED into a kind of isolation by the others all blaming him.

Because now see what ripple effects result:

Now, the other characters are just as able to focus on their own individual storylines as they were in the show, with the additional concern of wanting to ACTUALLY find Dick and figure out what’s going on with him or tell him they still want to help....without this in any way needing to distract them from their own storylines, practically speaking, or cut into Dick’s narrative alone-time, because as part of the equation you ALSO have Slade, who has his own wants and agendas, not to mention tactics. And Slade’s perfectly capable of and willing to work with others, or utilize the long game, or engage in a game of cat and mouse as a distraction...there are numerous ways that you could engineer a plot FROM these motivations that allows him to keep the rest of the Titans distracted and even targeted individually, without allowing them to group back up with Dick or Dick to even know that they’re in danger and that his attempts to avoid that backfired.

You want the characters isolated and divided? The PLOT can do that for you. You don’t need the characters to do that to themselves.

IMO, most if not all stories are meant to advance characters, first and foremost. Take Characters A-Z and leave them different from how you found them. Move them to a different position in their lives as much as anything else, from where they began. The goal is character DEVELOPMENT.

What this means, in my book, is that the plot should serve the characters, NOT the other way around. The plot should grow FROM the characters and what they would or would not do....the characters should never have to be forced to FIT INTO a plot.

That’s backwards.

There shouldn’t be any need to reverse engineer a certain starting point, characterwise.

Just like....start the plot, plotwise....and from the moment you first introduce a single plot element, prioritize how would the characters react and BUILD from there.

The only engineering you should need to do is how to get to an eventual END point....which is still all about the forward momentum, not backing your way into anything.

Its one thing to have an endgoal for your plot, a point in character or narrative development that you want characters to reach. But its all about perspective. About keeping that what you’re working towards rather than something that you like, have to reach before you can even really BEGIN.

Which is what Titans S2 did. The real GOAL of the season in terms of Dick’s storyline, was his solo journey of self-discovery. But there’s a million different ways they could have LAUNCHED that journey, without it having to be the forced and contrived outcome of events and character decisions that literally only existed to initiate a journey that never required a forced initiation.

And so all this narrative energy gets utterly wasted and expended on stuff that it just flat out doesn’t need to be spent on in the first place....instead of just putting that same energy to use building forward-facing storylines for ALL the characters, that don’t require contrived spats of disharmony when the goal of such moments isn’t even the disharmony but rather just that they’re kept apart, the end RESULT of the disharmony.

Imagine what S2 could have built if instead of wasting time, characterization and energy on getting to a point they could have simply started from if they’d simply looked at it that way and chosen to just....start. If they’d applied all that to building across the board, everyone’s story in service to their own character first and foremost, no tangled feedback loops making characters regress or cycle through the same behavior or narrative positionings over and over again in order to not get in each other’s way or cross paths at a time when the show didn’t want them to cross paths....because rather than make all these characters work at cross purposes, they’re all on the same page, they still want the same things....you’re simply engineering from their own natural characterizations and organic decisions and reactions, ways the PLOT can be utilized as a TOOL, to keep them moving forward in their own respective chapters, WITHOUT their characters having to be bent out of their natural shapes or forced into niches that don’t really suit them, just to keep them, PREVENT them, from more naturally or organically making a choice or action that would ‘get in the way’ of the plot.

Bottom line......the plot is supposed to be there to advance the characters, because the characters are what we come to stories for. The characters are who we invest in, relate to, ROOT for.

The characters aren’t there to advance the plot. We’re not here to yell yeah, I really hope the writers do whatever it takes with characters, no matter how backwards or unnatural it seems, just to get that sweet sweet and oh so specific ending we want that is in no way dependent on how invested or not we ACTUALLY are in the characters by the time it arrives, in order for it to actually be effective or not!

Lol. Y’know?

So yeah, that’s my biggest gripe with Titans so far. I’m still eager to see what happens between Kory and her sister, and although I’m not thrilled it seems to be becoming Batfam Straight Outta Gotham rather than like, Titans: The Show, I admit I am curious about what take they’ll go with for Babs. As I still pretty vividly recall that weird as hell Birds of Prey show the CW or UPN or WB or whatever it was at the time did for one season, where Babs was honestly not terribly adapted despite the show otherwise bearing like, zero in common with any existing DC property or character (do not even get me STARTED on their takes on Dinah and Helena, no, blehrrible, those were bad, those were like super bad)....anyway, I’m kinda curious even if it wouldn’t have been my choice for what direction the show should take. Not that I have a specific one in mind, just, yeah. And I also kinda would not hate if we got a new Roy Harper now, to replace the not!Roy of Arrow, because I don’t know him, no seriously, who is that, its not Roy Harper.

You ever want to read a fic that is probably as long (or longer) than a book series, but not have the main love interests kiss until chapter 300? Then you probably have some issues, but I'm not a therapist, so here we go.

Stand By Me by whelvenwings on AO3. (31,252 words).

Castiel hates Dean for being blunt and reckless and coarse, for drinking, for refusing to talk about how he feels and just pretending everything is fine. Most of all, they hate themselves and each other just for being alive. What right do they have to be alive? No one else seems to be. But against his own will, Dean starts to notice things about Castiel that he likes. Starts to hope that Castiel might like him, too. And together, they start to fight for a world where they're both alive - and that's a good thing.

Notes: One of the first fics I ever read, and one of my faves! The ending was slightly unsatisfying, but not so much that I would drop a star.

Description: But that’s the whole reason he’s here, isn’t it? He’s not out here hunting Humans. He’s not even hunting deer, or bears, or anything else that featured in Bambi. He’s out here, freezing his nuts off every night, because he’s hunting Angels. Sometimes Dean wishes that Angels were like how they’re described in the Bible. How people from time too old for him to care much about thought Angels were messengers and warriors of God, protectors of Humans. He knows that how they’re really described in the Bible is actually pretty terrifying, but at least they were told by God that they’re supposed to love Humans, right? That’s a thousand times better than what Angels really turned out to be.

Notes: I would be lying if I said I didn’t read all these slow burn fics just so I could rec this. I would also be lying if I said this wasn’t my favourite fic of all time. The pining is so intense it is practically unbearable to read. Honestly, I don’t care if you think it is too long or it isn’t really your thing; I would rec this to anyone with ears. I will still be reccing this in Hell. It is absolutely phenomenal.

Notes: An absolutely excellent plot, which is excellently written, and is somehow simultaneously angsty and adorable.

He’s Sam’s best man, of course, and he doesn’t even mind that Jess has her own best man to share in all the organisational duties. The more the merrier, right?Except Dean must have done something to epically piss off the universe because Jess’s best man just happens to be Castiel friggin’ Novak. He’s got even hotter since High School, but apparently no friendlier and if Cas wants to spend the week pretending like they’ve never met before? Fine. Two can play at that game.

Notes: Jesus Christ, I have not read a single fic which sums up exactly how stupid Dean and Cas can be sometimes. I loved it.

Notes: So cute! All the angst! My favourite trope! (So many exclamation marks!)

Hunting (and life) gets interesting when wings are involved. Notes: Okay this was literally adorable and you can not convince me otherwise. Every time I read a fic with everyone’s favourite archangel, I miss him just a bit more. (This fic is slightly more Sabriel than Destiel, but only by a little).

Notes: Pretty cute, and I did enjoy reading it. Not sure why like half the slow burn fics are set in a high school, but hey.

Sam and Dean Winchester are drug investigators in the LAPD. During a bust, Dean is saved by Castiel, one of the mysterious Angels, the elite fighting unit of the LA City Council. When Castiel insists on taking Dean to Paradise because he says they have work for him, Dean has little choice but to go along. But when a new drug, “Elysium”, hits the scene, people all over the city start dying. The brothers and Castiel must work out where the drug is coming from and stop its spread before it's too late.

Notes: There was nothing wrong about this fic, it just wasn’t really my cup of tea. I found the fic that it reminded me of though; I Know A Place by whelvenwings. It is fairly similar, but in my opinion a tad better.

So there we go: slow burns! And if you’re thinking, ‘Lina, where are all the ridiculously long ones? I want them to have their first kiss 300 chapters in?’ just know that I do not have the patience or the time for that. Mostly the patience. Okay, maybe I avoided them because they make me want to smash my phone. Whatever. Another day, maybe.

I’m on a quest friends! And this quest involves book recs, so I know y’all are gonna be happy haha. I’m still working on my 2019 book rec list, so hopefully this will put you on until then!

So, this is part of The Hanged Man release promo I’m taking part in this month, and the aim of the game is to recommend books that a Tarot Sequence fan would enjoy, and in order to do that I’m dissecting The Last Sun into tropes and then basing book recs off of those tropes. I’m focusing on LGBT inclusive books too, so every book here has some aspect of that.

Found Family/Soul bond: This is literally one of my favourite tropes of all time and it shines through (ha, sun puns) in The Last Sun. The connection between Rune and Brand is the best, as well as the one they share with Quinn, Max and Addam. The following two books excel at found family and the idea of people coming together.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I think almost everyone and their aunt has read this by now so i’ll make it snappy; Six of Crows is a great example of a group of people coming together for a reason and becoming an odd little family on the weirdest of terms. There’s also the magic element that I love in this duology, which is another reason I wanted to rec it, I think fans of the magic system in the Last Sun would potentially enjoy this too.

Crown of Feathers by Nicki PauPreto. I ALMOST put this under world building because i love the world that this book introduces. It’s very fantasy heavy and well crafted. “Crown of Feathers is an epic fantasy about love’s incredible power to save—or to destroy.” THERE ARE PHOENIXES PEOPLE. The soul bond here comes into effect between the main characters and their phoenixes who act as companions, hence the rec.

Kick Ass/Powerful Protagonist: Rune is, above all, able to kick everyone’s butt to the sun and back (no, i’m not going to stop. get used to it!) So if that’s a quality you really wanna explore more of, start with these books.

The Batwoman comic series is a great series. Lesbian badass main character and beautiful art work. I’m still new to the world of figuring out where to start with reading a series but a good place to begin with Batwoman, I’ve found, is with the new 52 run, or with the rebirth run.

The Lightning Struck Heart by T.J. Klune. Fans of The Last Sun will definitely love this one. The writing has a similar kind of humour, there’s magic AND the main character is absolutely able to kick everyone’s butt.

Dreadnaught by April Daniels. Main character is transgender and very, very powerful. Danny basically inherits superheros powers when they die in front of her, and she has to figure out how to adapt to her new life as a cape wearing crime fighting master.

Fantastic World Building: I mean, what more do I need to say? I can’t fit another pun in here though, it i-sun-t possible... >:D

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon has literally one of the best cases of world building i’ve ever experienced? It isn’t urban fantasy but it IS fantasy and there ARE dragons and really what more could a person need. What? You DO want more? Well fine. There’s also some fantastic characterisation at play, and there’s some great representation! including two women who dig women (romantically... not with a shovel).

The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. “Cas has fought pirates her entire life. But can she survive living among them?” This could have easily gone under Kick Ass Protag too, and also kind of soul bond/companion bond, but I chose to put it under here because I really liked the way the world building worked? It’s unique and interesting.

Urban Magicy Vibe: Listen, it’s a title okay. It doesn’t always have to sound epic it just has to explain things. The books under this category are here because they have main characters who aren’t heterosexual and the vibes of the stories give me similar urban magicy vibes to The Last Sun. Also, in most of these cases the sense of humour matches up quite well to the one found in The Last Sun too, so I’ve just put the summary next to them instead of a full on explanation because I’d be saying the same thing over and over again haha.

The Fever King by Victoria Lee. “In the former United States, sixteen-year-old Noam Álvaro wakes up in a hospital bed, the sole survivor of the viral magic that killed his family and made him a technopath.” Need I say more?

A Ferry of Bones and Gold by Hailey Turner. “Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them.” (I really, really like the front cover on this one. I know that’s random, but it’s just so pretty??)

Dim Sum Asylum by Rhys Ford. “Welcome to Dim Sum Asylum: a San Francisco where it’s a ho-hum kind of case when a cop has to chase down an enchanted two-foot-tall shrine god statue with an impressive Fu Manchu mustache that's running around Chinatown, trolling sex magic and chaos in its wake.”

Iron & Velvet by Alexis Hall. “My name’s Kate Kane, and when an eight-hundred-year-old vampire prince came to me with a case, I should have told her no. But I’ve always been a sucker for a femme fatale.” (This one is a particular favourite of mine!)

By Fairy Means or Foul by Meghan Maslow. “The last thing half-dragon, half-fairy private investigator Twig Starfig wants to do is retrieve a stolen enchanted horn from a treacherous fae, but there’s no denying the dazzlingly gorgeous unicorn who asks Twig to do just that.”

The Enchanter’s Flame by Michele Notaro. “Strange things are happening all around Brinnswick. Things that remind me of a piece of my past I’d rather forget. Girls are being killed, drained of blood, and left with strange markings on their bodies. When I finally connect the cases together, a specialist is called in—though, what he’s a specialist of is beyond me.”

Anhaga by Lisa Henry. “Aramin Decourcey—Min to his few friends—might be the best thief in Amberwich, and he might have a secret that helps him survive the cutthroat world of aristocratic families and their powerful magic users, but he does have one weakness: his affection for his adopted nephew, Harry.” Full disclosure, I haven’t read this one yet, but I’ve heard good things and it does sound like the kind of book that a Last Sun fan would enjoy (hence me wanting to read it in the first place haha).

So there we have it! I might make another of these if I can think of anything else that a fan of The Last Sun might enjoy (and for those of you who have read some of these books and enjoyed them but NOT read The Last Sun, you should do that! It’s fantastic!)
