Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law #12: “Trio's Company” | April 18, 2004 - 11:30 PM | S02E02

I would say that Space Ghost's ending truly was the end of an era. I'm not sure how cognizant of it I was at the time, though. I can't remember if Space Ghost's season was plainly stated to be it's last or if it just felt that way or what. But if it did indeed seem like an ending at the time, then what a fucking insult giving us more Birdman to kick things off for phase 2. I mean, Jeuss Christ.

In “Trio's Company” we are treated to a barrage of empty zany jokes about Birdman trying and failing to get in GiGi's pants. She's a beautiful redhaired lady that is making out with every man in the office (and elsewhere) but him. She's based on Gravity Girl from the Galaxy Trio. Their relationship takes a turn when he asks her out and she agrees... to move in with him. Funny? I mean, it's not a bad concept, especially when she brings other dudes over with her (I think they're the dudes from the Galaxy Trio, but I'm so exhausted from looking up “Gravity Girl”, I simply can not bear it). But everything in Birdman's world has no gravity, which is pretty FUCKING ironic because [you get it already, I'll stop].

This is when I officially gave up on Birdman. I might have said that during the write-up for the last episode, but it's technically truer to say so here. I did actively watch “Blackwatch Plaid”, but any and all moaning about “I'M NEVER WATCHING THIS SHOW AGAIN” is basically meaningless for me, a person who will emptily make this threat and then wind up seeing a bad show to it’s conclusion anyway. Me giving up on Birdman has to happen in practice, which it did here when I did not watch this episode on television. I did not actually see this episode until I started this project.

Birdman plays it's comedy with the precision of that brief bit in The Animaniacs where it shows the writers “flipped”. I don't know if this is going to mean anything to any of you, but I’ll try and explain. Literally almost every time when I think about Birdman-- okay, you know how sometimes when you hear about something, like an object or a concept or a person, etc, your brain will sorta identify that thing to you by showing you a brief image of it? Like a flashcard? Does anyone else experience this? Like, somebody says “fishing pole!” and your brain just shows you a very brief picture of a fishing pole to you, so you'll continuing knowing what fishing poles are?

Well, when people mention shows or movies to me sometimes more than a flash card pops up, but instead it'll be like an animated gif, and for me when I think of Birdman I actually think about that brief scene in The Animaniacs theme song under the lyric “the writers' flipped” and it's just two writers with re-re arms bouncing around while they make goofy faces and springs are coming out of their heads. I probably can't convince anyone here that I'm right about thinking Birdman is unfunnily zany in a detestable way by urging you to google the theme song for Animaniacs and look at that short little animation. But I wish I could.

I've explained this before. But some of you like when I repeat stuff incessantly, so this is for you: I attempted this blog one other time. I started a thread called something like ADULT SWIM IN REVIEW or ADULT SWIM: REVIEWED where I just decided to go through every episode of every Adult Swim show in chronological order. I did it up to 2004 or so, kinda around where I am now (yikes!). I dashed it off initially, cuz it was just a message board thread and I was basically just using it as a way to keep track of it for myself, so I'd say stupid pithy things that usually involved some message-board specific shorthand (example: “puppets? compn must hate this one” “Frylock produces a list that would rival Lim da Skit’s!” like, the most inane-sounding inside shit ever). I started over because it’d been so long that picking up where I left off felt weird, and also those early entries really didn’t hold up. Anyway, here's a previously-unpublished write-up for this episode that remarkably says different stuff:

Historically speaking, I gave up on Harvey Birdman around this time. This was the first Birdman show that I intentionally missed. All these Birdman episodes from here on our are exciting and new to me!

So anyway, this episode is really terrible. Like, spectacularly so. I hate every character, I hate every joke, I hate how the story moves... man, I just hate everything about this one.

So okay, Inch High PI is fired for being short. See, his shortness interferes with his surveillance-photo-taking abilities. That's funny, right? Meanwhile, Birdman deals with a comically promiscuous personal trainer who moves into Birdman's apartment after Birdman asks her out on one date. She uses his apartment to fuck dudes in, while never fucking Birdman. Birdman thinks that he has a thread of a shot of a chance getting his cloacae stroked, so he puts up with it. While this all happens, Inch High PI is shown running in at the end of every scene trying to get Birdman's attention (he's small! so it's tough!). Reducto goes crazy at the sight of him (because he's small! Reducto is obsessed with stuff like that!). You get the idea.

The most frustrating thing about this episode is that basically nobody actually has a conversation. That's one of the main things that irks me about Birdman: the characters are crazy joke machines and pairing any two characters in a scene almost never results in a functional verbal interaction. It's like watching bad improv or something. Except, you know, it's a cartoon, where there are multiple stages in production where you have an opportunity to fix that problem. It doesn't strike me as a creative choice as much as just bad writing.

This episode bites and I don't care who knows it. Go away!

The Popeye Show #9: "The Hyp-Nut-Tist/Child Psykolojiky/Cartoons Ain't Human" (April 19, 2004 - 1:30 AM)

At 1:30AM, Adult Swim started airing The Popeye Show. I’m not sure they even promoted it. I think they just needed to fill that half hour suddenly and just decided to plug The Popeye Show on there. I liked The Popeye Show. They showed three uncut Popeye shorts and included little bumpers discussing certain historically significant Popeye facts. It was clearly aimed at adult classic animation fans and not kids. Really cool, honestly. Anyway dipshits who don’t understand that Popeye is great complained, because they thought it was kids cartoons polluting their block. Relax shithead. Popeye is good. It’s a cartoon about a gross guy that kills people for fun. It fits right in to your precious Adult Swim block. It’s okay. They’re going to take it off the schedule soon, anyway.

Swimpedia notes that it was Popeye’s 75th anniversary around this time which I guess means Adult Swim actually was acknowledging our boy Popeye at some capacity. Unfortunately I don’t remember this! But then again, this is around the time I started drifting away from Adult Swim as a regular viewer.

I just want to say, whoever shopped for my change of clothes- thank you so fucking much. I mean I really thought I wouldn’t be able to pull off ripped jeans but.. I think I look great! Especially how the shirt contrasts how light they are. Oh wait let me clarify. In the bag were some light blue jeans, a white shirt that was a little big on me, some black shoes with orange butterflies, a hair tie, the necessities, and a letterman jacket. Don’t worry I’m all dressed! The only thing missing from this outfit is the jacket. But I'm a little perturbed by it. Like- the more that I look at it, the more I wonder if this is Mirio’s. I mean it's dark blue with white sleeves and white symbols on it. Or are they logos? What I mean is that it looks like the one he wore to the school’s culture festival at the end of season 4. 

Wait.. what if this is Mirio’s? What if he gave this to Mic so he could give it to me? My face flushed at the thought. Me wearing Mirio’s jacket.. What would it feel like? What would it smell like..? I hesitate to grab the jacket, eventually doing so and lifting it to my nose. Wait a minute- what the fuck am i doing? This could be his jacket and here I am being a creep! Why am I like this? He might be cute but no way in hell am I gonna turn into Toga! “Stop thinking about him!” I throw the jacket over my shoulder before hiding my face in my hands. “Stop with that shit!” I remind myself. “He is out of our league! Real or not!”

“Who?” I jump at a familiar voice. “What the fuck man!” I turn to see the hot mess known as Present Mic along with a smiling Nezu in the doorway. Fuck that blonde bastard and shit eating grin. I inhale sharply at the scene I just made all the while silence hangs over us. “Im so sorry.” I mumble, my head hanging down. “I- If I knew you were there I wouldn't have sworn sir.” The small principal laughs light heartedly while Mic chuckles at my suffering. “Y/n, my name is principal Nezu of UA.” He says calmly. I raise my head to properly see him. “Some of my staff have met you and you seem to know them. I can not interfere in the government’s  investigation of you, however I am allowed to ask on behalf of my staff how you know them along with some other questions in order to assist.” The mousy man explains. “For example, we will be escorting you to a safe place for you to stay.” He looks up at Present Mic with a smile. “Can you escort Y/n to the car?” He asked. Well, it’s framed as a question but it sounded more like an order. But Hizashi wasn't complaining, at least as far as I know since he nodded with his signature, enthusiastic smile. Once Nezu left the door frame, Mic turned his attention to me. “Got what you need?” Mic asks. I glance over to the jacket, abandoned on the bed. “Hold on.” I say as I go to get it but when I get to the bed it isn’t there. “What the..?” I begin to question only to be stopped by light. Not white light, it was a light yellow- almost gold in color- forming around my chest in the shape of the jacket. “Uhhhhhh-!” In a matter of seconds the light fades and the jacket appears on me. It's a little big but so warm. Almost like a hug from a family member or friend that you haven't seen in awhile. I look back to see Mic in awe at what I just did. “What did-?”

“Dude dont ask me cus I have no idea!” I say to defend myself. From the lower, right hand corner of the door frame, Nezu popped his head back into view. “Did I miss something?” Mic nods his head while I shake mine, both of us dumbfounded at what just transpired. He looks between the two of us and chuckles, leaving us once again. “I-” I start but he just shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Nope. Not right now. Let’s just go.” He decides and leaves. Seeing as I have nowhere else to go, I follow him.

Walking through the hospital is weird in itself. Partially because I don't remember entering along with the fact that seeing people with animal or alienistic attributes to them isnt something I’m used to yet. Accompanied with all the smells and sounds that come with hospitals, it just is a big nope for me. Some people don't like heights, some people don't like tight spaces, others dont like bugs- “Hey are you okay? You sound like one of my students.” Speaking of. “Huh?” I look around. Couples, families, some people alone sit in chairs while women at desks work quietly. In front of us is a sliding, glass door leading to the world I seem to be stuck in. “Are you coming?” He asks with a hint of concern in his voice. “Oh-um.. Y-yeah. Just grapelling with this again.” I try to calm myself with a laugh. “Again?” He prompts, lowering his shades a little. Woah look at those eyes. Since when did he have heterochromia? I thought he had red or green eyes..? “Uh, kid? You’re spacing out again.” He points out. I jump “Fuck- sorry!” I apologize. “Hey, hey, it's okay! Just got worried that you were trying to bail on us.” It takes me a moment to register what he said but once I did snort at that. “Me? Try to bail on pro heros? Does it look like I am insane?” I ask. The blonde takes a moment to stare. He sighs, taking his shades off to stare at me. Again what are those eyes? He looks up and down at me before I break the silence “You’re a Christmas boi.” I mumble under my breath. He narrows his eyes as a smile teases his lips. “W-what?” He says through a laugh. “You have red and green eyes! You’re a Christmas boi!” I smile wide at my declaration. The sleek, black, car beside us opens a door. Once again Nezu poked his head out for us to see. “I’m sorry to interrupt but we are on a schedule.” He reminds us. We apologize and rush into the car. 

This car is packed for what it was. Mic was in shotgun while I was behind the driver. It’s so weird having everything be backwards. Nezu sat right beside me and on his right was pro hero Snipe. Nezu faces me- which was weird in itself since I’ve only seen three- fourths of his face most of the time- and smiles kindly. Before I could say anything he turns his head to Snipe. “Y/n, this is Snipe. He is a teacher at UA. If the government allows it, you will be seeing him again.” The pro remains straight laced from what I can tell. His gas mask leaves much to the imagination. “And if you don't mind looking at our driver,” Nezu adds with a point of his paw. I look through the right rear view mirror to see the helmet of none other than arbor day himself. “Woods!” I shouted, starling everyone in the car to the point of jumping in their seat. “You know him too?!” Mic exhorts, his shades crooked from my excitement. “Of course!” I confirm. “Dude is amazing! So underrated, so little screen time!” Kamui sighs and sits up. “And to think I was getting away from fangirls..” He mumbles. “Sorry! I’ll tone it down. It’s bad enough Mic is in the car.” I apologize with a smile at what I did. “Hey!” Mic yells. From Nezu’s side Snipe gives off what I can only assume is a snort. “Not you too!” The blonde whines. Kamui only starts the car with a sigh, pulling us out of the hospital and out onto the open highway. “The kid has a point Hizashi, you know damn well it's true!” He says through his laughter. “It’s not! Nezu back me up here!” Mic pleads. I laugh when I turn to see the tiny principal with comically wide, Allmight headphones covering his ears. Snipe laughs louder while Mic continues to call on Nezu to help only for it to fall on deaf ears. Kamui- from what I can see- just taps his fingers on the wheel muttering about the situation he’s in. Poor man needs a couch and a blanket. “Hey, um.. Mr. Woods? Woods?” He sighs. “Kamui is fine.” He assures. His eyes glance back at me through the mirror. “What made you want to be a hero?” I ask with a cock of my head like an airhead would. He chuckles a little. “Its a long story..” He assures. “And it isn’t all that interesting. And I don't think I should tell you.”  I shrug my shoulders. “Doesn't matter if it is or isn’t interesting. I only know you for your quirk. And your pro hero status. There is always more behind a title.” He rolls his head for a minute and exhales. “Okay but you could be a little brat who could tell everyone.”

“True, but I don't know anyone outside of UA, and surely you've been asked this before?”

He takes a moment and sighs again. “Well, okay. But only because it’s gonna be a while. It's not that interesting though.” He restates as if to ask me if I’m sure. I scoot up a little in my seat like a child, making him chuckle again. “Okay! Okay!” His slumping spine is straightened again. “I didn't really know what I wanted to be when I was younger. My dad said I should be a carpenter.” I chuckle. “Really?” He nods. “Yeah, either that or a fireman. But looking back on it-”

“Fire and wood?” I questioned with a look. He laughs. “I know! If it wasn't for the money that came with being a hero he would’ve insisted. And I would’ve been one too if it wasn't for my sister.” I put an elbow on my knee. “Now what did she do?” A noise of amusement makes its way out of him. “It wasn't all her fault!” He defended. “Well what happened?” 

“On Christmas eve, I was about 13. My sister comes running in saying that the family cat ran away. My dad was drunk on the couch and my mom was still making dinner so she didn't hear her. She begged me to help her find the poor thing. So me, being the amazing brother I am- put on my coat and walked out into the freezing cold with nothing but a flashlight. My family lived right next to this deep forest and in that forest is a lake. I walk to the lake to see the cat meowing at some frozen water.” I nod along. “I look too over at it and see a person banging against the ice! So without hesitation I grow a branch larger than anything I have ever made at that point and shatter the ice with it. Later helping out the guy who was trapped under there.” My eyes widened at that. “Woah! Who was the guy?” He shrugged. “He told me he was a friend of one of the neighbors. There were some parties around so I didn’t question it. He went on his way, and I found satisfaction in helping him.” A smile found its way in his voice, now warm and calm behind the wheel. “I guess you could say without him you wouldn't be here.” I conclude. He nods his head. “Wow woods. I didn’t know that was why.” Snipe commented, making me jump. “Y-You-!” Woods stumbled over himself. “Since when did you guys-”

“A third of the way into your story.” Mic pipped. “That's very selfless of you.” 

“O-Oh.. Thank you.” Arbor boy mumbled. “Oh! We’re here!”

3x01 Chapter Thirty-Six: Labor Day

I’m so hype for this episode’s p e a k summer vibes, I cannot even tell you. These outfits were perhaps the ones I was most excited about diving into, not necessarily for any thematic work they do, but just because I love them. It’s that simple. Summer is ~my season. And from this ep it would also appear to be Betty Cooper’s. 

She has so many different looks here! It’s the most caps I’ve made for an episode so far, topping out at 631 (don’t look at me like that). She wears A Lot of clothing in this episode, in a lot of different iterations—and this post is lengthy as a result. As such, I’m deigning to try out a read more cut on this one, which is a thing I go back and forth on for this blog—but I’ll save that chat for later.

It wounds me how briefly we get to appreciate this adorable look. The denim shorts?? With the rolled cuff? The gingham?? My god. 

I think this dress is incredibly cute (I’ll probably say that a lot this post). Sometimes I think of it randomly and wonder if I can find it for sale on the internet somewhere. I’m just very fond of it. 

There’s a moment here where Archie, Jug, and Betty reminisce about Sweetwater Swimming Hole—Betty doesn’t remember an incident involving some leeches (a la Stand By Me—and not even the most overt allusion to that film this season), but Jug and Archie do. This isn’t the only moment Betty will seemingly fail to recall a childhood memory throughout this season. Put a pin in it.

It’s quick, but we see her pop an adderall in the courthouse. 

Murder me, please, because this is really too cute to be dealing with. 

We saw Betty wear (her first!) white v-neck tee in 220. This might be the same one, it might be new, who knows. The short overalls are defo new tho. 

Please note she wears her hammer necklace to do some work on Archie’s jalopy, which in the comics is called...Betsy. Which is potentially confusing. 

Let’s appresh that Betty has consistently been down to get dirty, as exhibited again and again and again in season 2. 

I am a sucker for a floral Reformation dress! I’m weak. Purple was certainly a season 2 color for Betty, and that carries on here—if in a softer, more lavender-leaning fashion.

It looks like the wardrobe team have made some alterations to the back, too, unless this is an earlier iteration of Refo’s Rosehip dress. 

(Okay, I’m an avid journalist, but damn girl. What’s the date range we’re talking here?)

Betty’s actual bathing suit (as opposed to her daydream suit—but we’ll get to that later) very much falls under the purview of her brand. Am I crazy, or do bathing suits just work for Ms. Reinhart? 

(She also dons a pair of on-brand flip flops I could not capture).

And yes, indeed, it has the standard patch. 

Now this purpley pink is indeed a very season 2 color for Betty, worn with her B pendant necklace, another s2 staple. The shirt has a very subtle ribbing to it, too. 

This is a romper, and Betty wears it to both be confronted by her family about what she’s been up to, and to camp out with her friends. 

The points that Alice and Polly make to Betty in this episode—that Betty should not be avoiding the trauma of having a serial killer for a father, that she should not be forging prescriptions for adderall, she should not be faking having a therapist—are not so crazy. That said—the Farm’s anti-medication stance, its burn-your-diaries-and-forget-your-past methods are also not the way to go. No one’s fully in the right here. There’s middle ground to be found.

As an aside, I’ll say that I’m near positive that at this point Alice is fully on board with the Farm, and is not yet an FBI informant. People join cults because they find personal benefits, and community, and because it can better their lives. They don’t join cults knowing it’s a cult. There’s a fine but very identifiable line.

Anyway.

We last saw this bra in the pilot! Betty’s very first scene! Can u believe? She wears it with a lacy high-rise brief in a sea foam or light blue color. As a firm proponent of a mixed set, I can only approve. 

Her post-swim hair is truly fab. Floral Keds!

Betty self-soothes by building some very nice cairns. She talks about quitting adderall, about getting a non-fake therapist.

Short-sleeve floral sundresses appear to be Betty’s summer courtroom go-tos. Love the mustard. 

Towards the beginning of season 2, Betty began to wear a lot of sporty stripes, and these pajamas certainly fit within that space. We’ve also seen her in athletic shorts with piping before.

Maybe she did quit her adderall? Maybe she quit cold turkey and she’s having a reaction because of this. (Guys, never stop a medication cold turkey, t a p e r, with the help of a professional.) Please recall Betty was forging her prescriptions—a criminal offense, but let’s not get into it. She doesn’t have the medical advice to do this the right way. But hallucinations are a not symptom of adderall withdrawal (per the internet.) Hallucinations can occur in a seizure, however.

In addition to...whatever’s going on here, we have two moments in which Betty appears in the subconscious of others in this episode: in seemingly both Archie and Jughead’s daydreams, and later in Archie’s nightmares. Fittingly, one outfit is imagined out of whole cloth (pun); the other, we’ve already seen Betty wear. 

How do we know Jughead and Archie are daydreaming? Well, they’re each given a moment of perspective, and Jughead is wearing a different outfit in each scene.

Arch’s POV. 

It’s hard to get a read on Betty’s suit—but I’m almost positive it is a bathing suit, unlike the skivvies-swim that happens elsewhere in the episode. This trip out to Sweetwater Swimming Hole was preplanned (...in Jug’s daydream), the Labor Day trip was spur-of-the-moment (per Archie’s ‘livin’ his last weekend as a free man’ vibe). It’s a teal color, which we really have not seen her wear at all. It could be a two piece, it could be a one-piece of a similar backless design like her pink polka dot suit, who knows.

In Archie’s version of the dream, his friends go off to live their lives without him. Betty’s wearing the pink denim skirt we last saw in 216, and what looks like a sleeveless denim top (we’ve seen her in two of those before).

Betty and Veronica are indeed wearing the same bathing suits in each day dream, most evident by Veronica’s suit—but you can also see Betty’s straps. This is probably for practical reasons; two costume changes for a wet scene is probably enough to deal with, three is asking a bit much, especially if it can be easily fudged. 

The moods of these scenes are totally disparate, as are their lighting schemes. Jug’s is full of possibility (peep how Betty gives him the eye); Archie is literally being left behind in his. Archie and Jughead are on two separate paths, and here’s your metaphor.

In Archie’s nightmare, we see the gang in their Shadow Lake get-ups from 214. Betty wears her wool moto jacket (a season two outwear staple) and her plaid knit crewneck from that ep. 

Summary: Eight outfits in real life: she changes out of her purple dress to put on her bathing suit, so we’ll count those separately; but she wears the underwear she swims in underneath that romper, so that counts as one. In addition there are two dream outfits, bringing this episode’s total to 10. Whew. 

I Own This: Yeah, you know this, I own quite a few of those Natori bras (but have never swum in one. Yet.)

Best musical moment: robb being named king at the end of season 1. Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: actually that’s also probably the moment robb was named king in 1x10. it’s just such a powerful, strong moment with a character I truly love getting the appreciation he definitely deserves. but at the same time there’s the obvious sense of dread, so I think the scene is done incredibly well.When it really disappointed you: well, ahem. obviously 3x09. it will always disappoint me. I get why it happened but it just sucks and hurts so badly. but other than for heartbreaking reasons, sadly a lot of season 7 disappointed me. I guess to name a single moment, the sex scene between jon and daenerys.Saddest moment: robb’s… departure… in 3x09. always.Most well done character death: *sigh* well, actually, probably ned’s. it’s really heartbreaking, but it had been built up to for multiple episodes, and it was done with a lot of feel and heartbreak. Favourite guest star: I’m not entirely sure who qualifies as a guest star, like how long they can be on the show to still be a guest, but I’m gonna say clive russell as brynden tully. he’s not supposed to just be a guest, but that’s what he turned out to be. still an amazing character.Favourite cast member: richard madden, always. my man. Character you wish was still alive: oh dear. robb stark, all the way, always. he’s still alive in my heart, though.One thing you hope really happens: robb comes back to life, takes back winterfell, saves the world from the white walkers and lives happily ever after. Best animal/creature: grey wind, always!Favourite location: winterfell!Trope you wish they would stop using: jon being an epic hero who gets one chance after another, forever. not exactly a trope, but I’m sure there’s a trope in there somewhere.One thing this show/book/film does better than others: creates complex, interesting characters with a lot of layer and depth, and shows that even villains can have a very humane side. and besides this, creating a world which is both fantasy, and yet still so very realistic almost to the point you could picture it being real history (which it obviously is not). Funniest moments: I will always a sucker for the moment in 1x01 when arya throws food at sansa and then cat commands robb to take her to bed. idk why, but I love it. as well as that, a lot of tyrion’s puns. and that moment at the end of 3x05 where tyrion and cersei are both acting like grumpy children as tywin commands them both to marry. idk why, but that cracks me up.Couple you would like to see: arya/gendry. I used to have more ships I liked on the show, but at this point that is the only one left I’d like to see.Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: well, a lot of my faves are already on the show, but I think rebecca ferguson would be amazing, or alicia vikander. and obviously my girl lily james.Favourite outfit: robb’s outfit in 3x09. despite everything, it’s a freaking gorgeous outfit that makes him look even more perfect than usual.Favourite item: any accessory the starks wear that has a direwolf on it. also many of sansa’s and margaery’s necklaces.Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: oh yes, absolutely. so, so many things. obviously the dvd’s and all that, and the books, but also most of the funko pop dolls, a robb  action figure which is actually mighty accurate, and things like calendars, notebooks and so forth. lots of stuff.What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: well, I would love to be a stark but I would not want to be related to robb. so, wishful thinking, stark through marriage? but if that doesn’t count, I guess I would be a lannister, if not for anything else, then for my apperance. there’s not a lot of blonde families in westeros. Most boring plotline: sorry, but jon and daenerys.Most laughably bad moment: *sigh* sadly, a lot of the dorne scenes, which sucks, because they were supposed to be awesome.Best flashback/flashfoward if any: the moment in season 6 when bran goes to the past and sees young ned going to the tower to rescue lyanna. the moment when bran calls for ned, and he turns around, is pretty heartbreaking.Most layered character: I want to say robb, but I know that from an unbiased pov, that ain’t so. I love snow and mountains.Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: there’s actually so many theories around that sometimes I forget what hasn’t been actually addressed, but… hmm… I guess I would have liked to know more about what ned was actually up to during the war when robb was born (like I get that he went to grab jon, but there’s always been speculation about whether he actually cheated and what he was doing etc etc), and maybe honestly a lot of stuff related to that time period. except rhaegar and lyanna. I do not care what they did and why. but I can’t think of any actual plot errors right now.Best promo: the season 3 promo shoots were mighty good, I loved them. also season 6 just for the sake of them bringing robb back and me dying from excitement, even if it was just one promo picture.At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: I fell in love with the show quite quickly in season 1, and in the books it’s pretty much the same. maybe around halfway the first book I realized how complex and awesome it actually is.

Top 5 favourite characters: cosimo (my baby!!), lorenzo, lucrezia, marco bello and brunelleschi. Other characters you like: hmm… uuh… maybe piero, ugo and guadagni? there are not that many characters on the show, after all.Least favourite characters: sorry, but contessina. I just cannot with her. I can’t. Otps: lucrezia/piero and absolutely no one else.Notps: basically any cosimo ship that was canon, but mostly contessina/cosimo and cosimo/maddalena. I was very disappointed with the ships on this show. Favourite friendships: cosimo/lorenzo, cosimo/brunelleschi and cosimo/marco. Favourite family: well, the medici’s! Favourite episodes: I really love the first two episodes, but they’re all very good.Favourite season/book/movie: I guess I can say season 1 since season 2 is coming out? definitely season 1, if not for anything else then for my richard bias. My thoughts on: Spider-Man (2017)

Okay, so I just got through watching the new Spider-Man series on Disney XD’s Youtube page and considering how someone asked me about it I figured it was time for me to share my input on it thus far.

And my thoughts?

It’s a good start.

A rough one, as I can point out quite a number of problems that I had with it, but a good one nonetheless. I’m getting a lot of foreshadowing instances throughout this episode that I’m eager to see unfold and I’m really excited to see what’s gonna happen next in the series. It’s grabbed my attention and has left a positive impression on me.

But it’s FAR from perfect.

I understand that’s rich coming from a blog that analyzes Ultimate Spider-Man (the black sheep of the Spidey series) but even I’m willing to admit that USM isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread. Plus, this is the first episode and usually, pilots aren’t the best but are mainly there to get the audience interested and set things up for future events. It’s a rare occasion that a person can find a downright perfect first episode, especially in a kids show, which is much harder to do since you can only get away with so little.

In fact, if I’m being totally honest and wanted to point out a good first episode, I would direct people to two shows that I worship on a daily basis. Those shows being Nickelodeon's animated series: Avatar: the Last Airbender (the original one, not The Legend of Korra) and the anime Attack on Titan (also known as Shingeki no Kyojin)

So without further ado, let’s take a look at Spider-Man 2017’s pilot.

I’ll start with the good stuff because there’s actually quite a lot of stuff that I did like.

First, I do like the art style of the series because it reminds me a lot of “Voltron: Legendary Defender”, and it has a bit more of an anime-esque feel to it (which if you hadn’t noticed from my Attack on Titan recommendation, yes, I am an avid anime fan). It’s a good start because it allows itself to be more distinct from USM’s art style and lets viewers tell the difference between the two. In some ways, it does look similar, but not enough to be confusing. (HOWEVER, I WOULD IMPLORE YOU TO KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR LATER)

Second, I do like a lot of the bonding moments that happen in this episode. Every conversation that Peter has with Harry, Ben, and Aunt May are done very well. I especially like the bonding moments done between Harry and Peter as you can tell that they are pretty close friends in this version. Plus, it’s nice to see a good memory of Peter with Ben that’s not a flashback and actually, involves them talking to one another. This gives the viewer a chance to actually see for themselves how close Peter and Ben were before Ben’s death, and it does feel very effective. (Side note: I kinda liked how the “with Great Power comes great responsibility speech was written in an equation. I actually thought that was kinda cute.)

Third, the way the Spider Sense in this version is utilized is actually pretty cool. You can actually see how Peter’s going to figure out the solutions to an issue, and it was a pretty neat callback to the “Amazing Spider-Man” film with Andrew Garfield where they did the exact same thing but in a different situation.

Vulture’s pretty cool with his design resembling the comics more, and I find it kind of ironic that he’s voiced by Josh Keaton who, if you don’t know, was the original voice of Peter Parker in “Spectacular Spider-Man”. Ironically, Keaton also voices Shiro from the current Voltron series that I mentioned earlier.

Finally, I found it a bit weird that Miles was mentioned in this episode but I still thought it was a pretty cool hint of foreshadowing on the writer's part. Plus it’s nice to see a female character, Liz Allen in this case, that isn’t Mary Jane for once in a Spider-Man series. Don’t get me wrong I love MJ but I do feel like having someone else in her place is a breath of fresh air. Also, I like that the male character is a reporter instead of it usually being the other way around. These are small things but they are pretty noteworthy in my opinion.

And now for my problems with the episode and, brace yourself, because there are quite a lot of them.

Let’s get to my biggest issue with the show, and it’s something that I know A LOT of people who hated USM are probably going to have, but here it is:

I thought that the character designs for “Ultimate Spider-Man” were better than the ones in this series.

Yeah… I said it.

Do I hate them? No....

...but I do feel like they’re a bit lazy and could’ve been better.

LEAGUES better.

Let’s start with Peter’s design because I have quite a few problems with his.

The main one being, it’s not original.

I mean, I understand that character designs can only go so far but this one I find to be particularly outrageous because all I see is Pidge from “Voltron”, without the glasses and with darker hair. Also, I’ll pour some salt in the wound by saying that I see a tinge of Ben Tennyson in there from the Ben 10 series. Heck, there are even a couple of aspects that they, in some ways, directly ripped off from Pidge’s character that I noticed a bit, and we’ll get to that in a minute.

But back to the designs, I’ll be honest in saying that I had higher hopes for this series when it came to how the characters looked and were drafted. I, in particular, had a major problem with Harry’s. His is the one that I find to be the most atrocious in my eyes and is the main reason why I’m about to throw a mini hissy fit.

Brace yourselves, because this my opinion on this topic:

When you’re designing a character, particularly one of, or THE main one, there has to be something in said design where a viewer can look at a picture of them and understand who they are or a bit about them. This is something that Ultimate Spider-Man excelled at, in my opinion, and this one really didn’t.

Let’s compare Harry in both versions.

Here’s Harry from “Ultimate Spider-Man”

Now for people who don’t know about the character, or Spider-Man in general can tell that he’s a rich kid. He’s got spiffy clothes, he’s handsome, and he’s got a suave haircut to match. Easily identifiable.

Now let’s look at Harry from the new Spider-Man series.

What can you tell me about him?

Nothing.

Nothing at ALL.

And now, allow me to pour some more salt in the wound and smear it by saying that his design is basically just Sam Alexander’s/Nova’s from USM with lighter skin.

That is a new level of lazy in my eyes.

Heck, there’s even a redheaded kid in the episode that looks like Harry Osborn, dresses like Harry Osborn, but isn’t Harry Osborn. By all means, he SHOULD be Harry because his design reflects his image.

I know they’re going for a more prestigious rival against Peter but it’s pretty distracting from a design level.  

So why am I rambling about this? Why have I wasted almost two pages worth of material on this ONE topic?

Simple.

Because the character designs are what got me INTO Ultimate Spider-Man.

As someone who was immensely tired of seeing the same old look from most cartoons like Star vs. The Forces of Evil, Regular Show, and even Steven Universe, not only were USM’s designs a breath of some much-needed air, but they were INTERESTING.

They had flare. They popped.

But why am I making such a fuss on Harry’s design? Well, when I first saw the show in the wee hours on a school morning, I ran across Season 1’s “Venom” episode and, what a surprise, it was the scene between Harry and Peter arguing in the hallway.

I was actually pretty shocked at the way that Harry looked and really liked his design, heck I thought he was really nice looking! (Give or take this was before I saw the way he looked in season 2 and loved his look even more than the former.)

So I can make the argument that HARRY was the reason I started watching the show in the first place, and it really irks me when I see how squandered his design in this new one turned out to be. But that’s not to say all of them were bad, in fact, I actually quite liked May’s design in this one just as much as her counterpart in USM, but the point still stands.

Anyway, rant over, moving along…

What else didn’t I like?

Well similar to USM I thought some of the dialogue, specifically with Peter, could’ve been cut out mainly when it came to his scientific talk. I know they’re trying to make him sound all smart and whatever but it gets a little overbearing and, dare I say it, is a little too similar to Pidge from Voltron.

I know I keep going on about Pidge and whatnot, but I’m sorry, the similarities are too noticeable. Heck, they even do the whole, “I’m going to lecture on everything I’m about to do instead of letting the audience figure it out for themselves” type of deal. It can work if you want to set up the stakes of what the character is up against but it gets really distracting if used too frequently. Also, the whole “popping and dropping” line from Vulture was a little weird and I hated that he was defeated so easily. However, I give it a bit of a pass considering the episode’s main focus was on characterization and USM had the same problem in the past.

The animation, for the most part, is a pretty mixed bag as sometimes it looks pretty good and sometimes it looks like it needed a bit more polish to it. I kinda have mixed feelings about the non-shading approach that the series is going for as it makes the animation feel a bit flat but I suppose it’s something I have to get used to.

So overall, what are my thoughts?

Again, while I ranted on about the designs and some other aspects, I do think it’s a good start and heading in the right direction. Is it perfect? No, but it has a lot of potential, and I’m really eager to see how this story unfolds.

Overall I’d give it a 7/10 on a 1 to 10 scale (1 being horrible and 10 being perfect).

My Top 10 Favorite Cartoons

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Animation is the greatest art form in the world. It’s film making, painting, doodling, caricature, satire, illusion, literature and music all at the same time. Truly poetry in motion. It simply does not get enough credit for just how miraculous the form can really be. Being the innovation in our culture that it is, making this list was difficult; because every time I thought of a worthy candidate for the list another worthwhile one popped up in my memory. As such, expect an honorable mentions before we get to number one. Before we jump in though, some ground rules.

1. If it’s animation, it counts. It doesn’t matter if it’s western animation or Anime, 2d or 3d, traditional or motion tweened, for children or for adults, for television or on the web. If it involves the cycling of drawn pictures to create the illusion of life then it qualifies.

2. This is not in order of objective quality and is strictly opinion based. Overall quality is a factor, but this list is mostly about how much of an impact it’s had on me as an individual.

enough ado, let’s get into it.

10. Being Ian

It’s more then Likely those of you readers who are American or anywhere besides Canada for that matter don’t know about this show, so in order to make sense of this entry let me provide a bit of information about myself. I am Canadian, and thus grew up with an entire library of Canadian produced shows intended for Canadian audiences. While I think the U.S.’s animation game is undeniably stronger then what we’ve got up north, we had some pretty solid entertainment like 6teen, What’s With Andy?, Total Drama Island, stuff like that. While it’s all well and good, the only thing I regret about our history as animators is that we rarely aim for more fantastical premises and almost always make shows about hijinks in mundane Canadian smalltown life. It’s nice every once in a while but we do it a little too often. I’d kill for a Canadian Adventure Time or Gumball. So why is Being Ian here? Well, the simple answer is this is the show that made me want to get into film making. Seeing as the premise is all about a nerdy kid with his camera trying to make an inspiring career out of his mundane life and constantly imagining scenarios that are treated as homages to famous movies like King Kong, Clockwork Orange, Jurassic Park and so on (many references I didn’t get as a kid) it makes sense that this would make me want to take on the same kind of lifestyle. It put me on live action for a while but as I found my talents are more in line with animation I moved onto it shortly after. Quite honestly, that’s it’s only real reason for being here. The animation is passable but nothing to write home about, it’s comedy got a chuckle out of me at times but isn’t really the most clever show ever (in fact sometimes it relies a little too much on grossout humor, as do most Canadian shows in fact), but the show undeniably played a major role in my development as a person. Also, it’s theme song is by Parry Gripp (the “Do You Like Waffles?” guy) so that’s a plus.

9. Wander Over Yonder

Alright, now that some of the country-based sentimentality is out of the way, let’s get into the really high quality stuff. The stuff with the bright colours, the wacky characters, the emotionally driven storylines and just everything great about cartoons. Craig McCracken is among my favorite animated show producers of all time (as previously stated in another article I wrote: Why Craig McCracken is a genius). This show is the perfect example of his talent and skill. Effectively just Road Runner on an intergalactic level with a touch of The Muppets, Wander Over Yonder is the cartoonist cartoon you will ever watch in your cartoon-filled life. It’s got a great sense of humor, intoxicatingly likable characters like the optimistic too-nice-for-his-own-good Wander, the spunky and adventure loving Sylvia and of course the abundantly evil yet adorable Lord Hater and his number one henchmen Commander Peepers, and it’s animation is miles upon miles in quality in comparison to what you may find on the air most of the time. I think objectively it is one of the finer shows on this list. So why only number 9? Well, the truth is . . . I haven’t watched very much of it. I watched the first season and pieces of the second. I intend to watch the rest once I get a bit more spending money but for now I gotta settle with what I bought, and for a show as high quality as this I refuse to pirate it. But this show left a great impact on me and came into my life when I needed somethin this cheery most. I discovered it when I was coming off of a really hard breakup that was way more difficult then it really needed to be and it bent me out of shape real bad, so putting this on felt like turning the lights in my brain back on. For that I’m really grateful.

8. Avatar: The Last Airbender

Ho man. Who knew Nickelodeon of all networks would make a move as artistic, risk-taking, original and highbrow as Avatar: The Last Airbender?? Oozing with eastern culture influence (so much so that there is an ongoing debate as to whether or not it counts as an anime), hours and hours of some of the most fantastic animation and fight choreography ever to hit the waves of television all done in glorious hand drawn frame by frame no less AND being the premiere of some of the most unforgettable characters in pop culture like the lovable Aang, the witty Sokka, The badass Katara and Toph and the honorable (haha) Zuko, this show is something you absolutely can’t miss out on for any reason at all. I would know as much, because I actually binged watched the whole thing as an adult instead of catching it while it was still on the air even though I was totally aware of it’s existence at the time. I was a stupid, stupid kid. It’s too bad Nickelodeon developed a history of terrible decision making that screwed over the follow-up series The Legend of Korra SUPER hard. All well. This show is fantastic and you need to watch it right now.

7. Venture Brothers

Alright, so at this point I feel an obligation to point out a certain bias I have when picking favorite shows. That bias being my love for superheroes. I. LOVE. Superheroes. They are a bigger chunk of my life then they realistically should be. So fair warning; a lot of these entries are superhero themed, this being one of them. But Venture Bros isn’t just that: it’s one giant satirical love letter to every kind of adventure show you can imagine. It homages everything from James Bond to Indiana Jones to Scooby Doo to Johnny Quest to Superfriends to Marvel Comics. It’s got fast witty dialogue that seamlessly alternates between high and lowbrow in seconds and has an ever expanding cast of great celebrity voices like Stephen Colbert, Clancy Brown, Seth Green and of course the manliest man who ever manned in the history of mankind, Patrick Warburton as Brock Sampson. Testosterone incarnate. The show has great appealing character design and so many memorably hammy characters that all comes together for a great slick style that’s every bit as badass as it is hilarious. You can totally get enraptured in the gut wrenching dialogue while still being invested in the plot full of conspiracy and espionage.

6. Cowboy Bebop

Anime fans rejoice; I put the most cliché basic answer for favorite anime on my list! In all seriousness though, Cowboy Bebop is often regarded as the gateway anime for an American audience and rightfully so. It’s heavily influenced by American culture, it’s got a soundtrack comprised almost entirely of Jazz, Blues and Bebop as is it’s namesake, every episode homages some sort of American genre of film like Noir, Sci-fi horror and even Blacksploitation flicks and it’s American dubbing is considered one of the few on par with the original if not better, with Steve Blum giving a cool as ice raspy take on Spike as the lead character as well as the rough but fatherly Jet, the seductive but sensitive Faye and the optimistic child prodigy Edward (who is a girl, in case you don’t know). But none of that would matter if the anime wasn’t good . . . . so it’s a relief that this show KICKS SO MUCH FUCKING ASS THAT IT DOES OH MY GOD!! If I could sum this show up in one word, it’s “cool”. You will never find a show cooler then this. That is a challenge. It’s got great Bruce Lee inspired martial arts action as well as Reservoir Dogs esque shootouts, and most importantly it’s got a lot of heart and dripping emotional tension enraptured in mystery that insists the viewer keep watching to peel back the layers of every character. Through nuance storytelling choices, heavy atmosphere and carefully chosen dialogue this show has a style and edge that will never be known again. Let’s just hope the live action adaptation doesn’t fuck it all up (it’s got Sunrise Pictures backing it though so that’s reassuring).

5. The Simpsons

This gif is just the tiniest taste of the timeless wit behind the golden age of this show. What can I say about the Simpsons that hasn’t already been said before? It’s one of the most culture revolutionizing pieces of all time, let alone the 20th century. It perfected the archetype of the family sitcom, is the longest running American television show in history, was once so ahead of it’s time to predicted the future eerily frequently and has even had some of it’s original dialect like “D’oh!” make it into the dictionary. This show is no doubt one of the largest reasons for our cultures current sensibilities and outlook. Most importantly though, it was just something me and my whole family could watch and bond over. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was getting so excited whenever this show would come on because it was a time where me and all the siblings and our folks would huddle around the couch and all laugh together at some great slapstick, clever one liners and just straight up bizarre jokes at times where the only way you can logically respond is to laugh. It’s too bad this delicious fruit has rotted quite a bit and Fox won’t just send it to compost already. I already wrote up an entire article about why the current Simpsons sucks now so if you’re interested, go check it out. For now, I’m just going to look fondly on it’s golden age through clips, old episodes and internet shitposts.

4. Homestar Runner

Oh, Homestar Runner. Ye ancient relic of the early days of the Internet before youtube. A simpler time when Flash cartoons were all the rage and you can tune into the surreal misadventures of a star spangled armless oblivious dolt and his more popular counterpart, the boxing glove wearing e-mail answering Luchador Strong Bad. When I was very little I was obsessed . . . OBSESSED . . . with Homestar. I think the great appeal of Homestar was that while it was clearly popular enough for references to pop up here and there purely by word of mouth and for the series to eventually get a videogame developed by Telltales and for the creators Matt and Mike Chapman to eventually move on to working for Disney, it was JUST obscure and surreal enough to make its fans feel like they were in a unique and secret club where they could really bond over references to the show and not have it ruined by having the brand just pop up everywhere and anywhere. As hipstery as that sounds, my point is that Homestar felt like a Niche where problems were simple, everything was up for ridicule and old Atari and computer games were always cool. They went on a hiatus for a few years and only recently came back with a little cartoon every once in a while (nothing regularly scheduled though) but if you want to dabble in a little bit of early 2000s lighthearted weirdness then I highly suggest checking out their website. 3. Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends

When I first came up with the idea to do this list this was the first show to immediately pop in my head. I just get into a good mood whenever I think about this show. It’s colour scheme, it’s wildly imaginative characters, it’s silly yet offbeat sense of humor, it’s great pacing. Mostly it’s premise is just so ingenious you have to wonder how nobody ever thought of it before. This show is the sole reason why Craig McCracken is among my absolute favorite Animation Directors. Everytime I heard the intro to this show come on as a kid I had to immediately stop whatever it is I was doing and catch a hilarious episode. This was a show my sister really liked too, so much so she learned how to play the theme on the piano. Whether it was letting awkward tension build or immediately escalating to a high speed chase, this show would always keep me giggling the entire way through. Not to mention some of it’s episodes were really heart wrenching and actually made me choke up a bit. I know leave you with one of it’s funnier bits.

2. Teen Titans

That superhero bias I was talking about is coming back with a vengeance. This show is great for a lot of the reasons I really like previous entries in this list actually. It’s got a great art style that’s heavily anime influenced, a cast of diverse and unforgettable characters (with my childhood favorite being the quirky and wise cracking Beast Boy and my adulthood favorite being the hilarious, innocent and lovable Starfire), a hell of a lot of heart that makes me tear up in some of it’s most emotional moments, FANTASTICALLY fluid and suspenseful action (once again done in glorious classical animation), a great soundtrack with a hype as hell opening number that’s so good I have it on Spotify, all sorts of homages to action show tropes as well as nods to the larger DC universe and takes itself the right amount of seriously to let some of it’s sillier aspects shine. I distinctly remember seeing the first episode when it came on for the first time and getting instantly hooked. Every main character in this show is cast spot on and give some of the most memorable performances I’ve ever heard. Plus it’s a show that only gets better with time . . . especially in comparison to . . . that other show.

Before we get into number one, here are some honorable mentions: Rick and Morty, Disney’s Recess, One Piece, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Clone High, Samurai Jack, The Legend of Korra, The Amazing World of Gumball, Steven Universe, Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom, Young Justice, Spectacular Spider-Man, 6teen.

1. Justice League Unlimited

Let’s take a moment to appreciate just how Amazing Bruce Timm’s take on the DC universe is, because . . . oh man . . . it is masterful. The stupendously likable characters, the intense action and suspense, the drama, the fast paced and impactful action and animation, the simple yet effective character design, the ever engrossing storylines. These are just some of the reasons why Bruce Timm is my favorite animated show developer of all time. There have been many great DC shows to come after this like Batman: Brave and the Bold or Young Justice, but none of them come close to the majesty of Justice League: Unlimited. When it comes to Bruce Timm shows most people would put Batman: The Animated Series higher up there, and while I without a doubt respect it’s legacy the fact that it’s Bruce Timm’s earliest show as director for the DC universe is pretty prominent in it’s pacing, action and to an extent it’s line delivery. The show moves rather sluggish and has more then a few issues in it’s animation, especially in it’s first season. I don’t hold that against the show in any way as it’s still very impressive for what it is, but you can tell Timm and his crew were just beginning to hone their style and would go through some growth pains further down the road. Justice League had some remnants of these problems here and there but they were beginning to shake these issues off. JLU is where Timm’s style got perfected. Perfect pacing, perfect line delivery, perfect animation, perfect action sequences where you can feel the impact of every punch and blow, perfect storytelling, and most impressively perfect juggling between the largest cast of characters Bruce Timm has tackled in his run. While Justice League would keep it between the original 7 in terms of juggling, JLU would take on characters like Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, Huntress, Black Canary, The Atom, Vigilante and so many more and make them all just as likable as the main cast if not more at times. And of course, there is the number one reason to watch the show . . . The Question.

God, do I love the Question. This show is the sole reason he is my second favorite DC character (first being the Flash). But anyway, to wrap it up, Bruce Timm once said in an interview that JLU was his favorite work because it was the only show he could keep going back to and continue to enjoy. I wholeheartedly agree.

Summer Camp

Summary: You reminisce back to the hot summer days you spent as a camp counselor and fell for your first love, Vernon.

Genre: Fluff, smut

Word Count: 3,842

It was in the beginning of July, violet season, when each year tiny petals floated through humid winds, pilling at the base of trees, coating cars and filling empty canoes. The air was fragrant with their pollen, triggering seasonal allergies, but no one ever seemed to complain. The sight was too beautiful, too rich to wish away. The algae on the lake had finally disappeared, leaving nothing but crystal clear water to sparkle under the summer sun. 

Head counselors scurried around the camp grounds with metal clipboards. Yellow cabins lined the dirt trail and an old tire swing could still be found suspended from an oak. It was as if you had never left. Time stood still in this place, like a snapshot of fond childhood memories that you could now relive. You stood on the grass looking around the campsite, recollecting past adventures of swimming in the warm lake and playing soccer on the field. Stepping into the food hall, you hurried to sign in. The room was full of busy people carrying trays and wiping down tables. 

“I’m not too late am I?” You asked the woman at the desk.

“No you’re fine honey, they just started down by the dock.” She said warmly, handing you a name tag.

Hurrying out, you could see the group gathered down the hill. Roll call had began and you prayed they hadn't called you yet.

“Y/N? Y/N?” The husky man bellowed. 

“Right here!” You huffed, raising your hand high. 

“Good, now that’s everybody. Let’s get started.” He began to read safety protocol and assigned each counselor to their cabins. Three boys began to stand beside him.

“These, ladies and gentleman, are our senior counselors; Vernon, Seungcheol and Mingyu. They’ve been here for a couple years now, so if you have any questions just let them know,” he announced. “Now let’s show you guys to your cabins.” Already knowing where each cabin was located, you began to trail behind the others, reminiscing once again. As you passed one of the cabins you recognized a familiar carving on the side of the wall. It was your name engraved in block letters along side your former cabin mates. A tall body began to approach you from behind,“Are you lost?” They asked.

“Oh, no, I was just looking-” you turned to notice the rest of the group was far ahead of you. He leaned in to inspect the markings.

“This is yours?” He pointed.

“Yeah, I did it the first time I came to camp. I had no idea it would still be here.” He looked at you and smiled before saying, “We should try to catch up with the others.” His eyes were a brilliant hazel that glowed in the light of the sunrise. They were warm, lively, and sparkled with joy. The smooth green on the edge contrasted beautifully with the amber color in the middle. His presence didn’t make you feel out of place, instead, it had seemed as if he already knew what you were doing and wanted to be a part of it. You followed him, trying to fall behind ever so slightly to examine him fully. He walked tall, with a sense of confidence that most good looking young men exuded. The back of his shirt read his name Vernon, one of the head counselors. You weren’t on the lookout for handsomeness during your stay, yet here it was. The counselors you knew in the past weren't significantly good looking by any means. Although, it may have been their lack of physical attractiveness or your lack of interest in the members of the opposite sex at the time. It must have been easy for young campers in the past to fall in love with him. Their desire silent, yet splendid, like a thousand daisies turning their faces toward the light of the sun. You imagined how clusters of tiny girls blushed at his approach or how small, hand-written love letters were slipped underneath his door at night. Even the lunch ladies stopped filling trays with creamed corn to catch a glimpse of his angelic features. This attention must have embarrassed him, turning his cheeks bright red. You had always been wary of boys that encountered too much attention from women. Their sense of self pride always seemed to be a burden that you had no time to entertain. 

As campers began to arrive, you and the rest of the counselors stood at the entrance, cabin names in hand. Small children poured out of yellow buses inspecting sheets of paper and flocking to the appropriate cabin sign. Five girls gathered by your feet and you began to riddle off names. The girls followed you back to the cabin where you introduced them to their bunks. Orientation took place in the middle of the camp grounds where head counselors rilled up the children and handed out shirts. You looked to see the senior boys standing with their new campers. They were rambunctious, already starting to wrestle with one another. The older boys struggled to tame them, keeping them separated until dinnertime, where they could be let loose. You watched Vernon reason with one, kneeling down to look him in the eyes. He rose up, looking at you directly and smiled with the corner of his mouth. As delayed as your response was, you still managed to return the gesture. All the children swarmed to the dinning hall like bees to a hive. The counselors didn’t eat with their cabin, instead they took their own separate table in the far corner of the hall. The girls you sat down with were chatty, which made it easier for you to observe others around you. Scanning down the row, your eyes met with Mingyu who had gotten up to demonstrate a story about him falling off a canoe. Seungcheul joined him, supporting his claims. Vernon cackled, hearing the story for the first time. You giggled watching them reenact the comical scene and your sudden interest caught Mingyu’s attention.

“Hey! You’re new, what’s your name?” He questioned.

“Y/N,” you blurted out, shocked at his abruptness. The entire lunch table turned their gaze to you. Heat began to rise in your cheeks, anticipating the next question. 

“Is it your first time counseling at a camp?” He maneuvered his legs back underneath the table. 

In one breath you responded, “It is, but I use to come here when I was younger.” He smiled with an open mouth, nodding slowly.

“Really? Vernon and I use to go here too actually!” You turned to look at Vernon who had been observing you the whole time. Although he was far, Vernon radiated coolness, as though he was content with life and always had been. He said nothing as Mingyu rambled on about past stories they shared at the camp. The eye contact you shared felt meaningful, but you couldn’t hold it the way he did for fear Mingyu would notice and acknowledge it. The gaze of a man’s eyes were not unfamiliar to you but this felt unique. It wasn’t unwanted like in the past, it didn’t make you feel uncomfortable. This was a look of desire. Desire to find out more about this new creature in his midst and how to get close to it. Your body stiffened, attempting to ignore his examination. How selfish it was for him to study you so openly. At least you were courteous enough to watch him from behind, sparing him the burden of self consciousness. You ignored Mingyu, along with everyone else in the room, to imagine what your hair looked like at that moment or if your dried sweat made your face too shiny. You snapped out of your thoughts when the booming sound of the head counselor’s voice spread throughout the hall, ordering everyone to return to their cabins for lights out. 

It was your responsibility to be up and ready before the girls, allowing time to help them comb their hair and apply sunscreen. When they were finally prepared, you went over the days events.

The Sun hung high in the sky, welcoming campers outside their cabin and into the exciting possibilities that awaited the day. The girls did not fair well on the trail, some getting lost while others grew too tired and lied besides rocks, refusing to go on any further. Despite being exhausted, they seemed to find enough energy to ask about your personal life, which became entertaining during the long journey. Curiosities about past boyfriends and favorite pop singers came up as you helped them pass over brooks and fallen trees.

After lunch all the campers gathered in the field. They were met with seven large styrofoam boards painted with blue and red circles. Each child lined up for their turn to hit the target. Vernon shot the first arrow, demonstrating where to properly place your fingers on the bow. They each attempted to make the shot, sending plastic red sticks soaring through the air. You helped adjust little hands, slightly improving accuracy. Failing to make a hit, one of the campers began to sob quietly. You rushed over to console her but it was no use, your lack of skill couldn’t get her what she wanted. Unsure what to do, you grabbed her hand and headed to Vernon.

“Do you mind showing her how to do it again? She’s having trouble.” You asked.

“Of course!” He knelt down on one knee as he had before, placing her hands in the appropriate location. He held the bow with her as she took her first shot and it landed on the furthest ring from the center. She hopped up and down, squealing with joy.

“Alright gimme five!” He cheered putting his hand out.

“Thank you.” You exclaimed.

“No problem, anytime.” He smiled warmly and you turned to walk away before hearing his voice call again. As he got closer, he began to speak lower, making it difficult for others to hear.

“Hey listen, me and some of the other counselor’s are getting together tonight behind the supply shed after lights out. Do you want to join us?” He asked.

“Um...sure, but...are we allowed to do that?” You asked innocently.

Vernon chuckled shaking his head. “Not technically, but you’ll be fine. No one’s ever caught us before.” His assurance made you at ease and you agreed to go.

As night fell, you made sure all the girls were fast asleep before you slipped your shoes on and crept out the door. The supply shed was far from where you were, and the night was dark and smokey. Clouds covered the the moon, blocking your main source of light. The only thing left to guide you was the dim glow of lightning bugs drifting through the air. You made your way cautiously across the campground, wet grass coating your shoes as you shuffled through the wet field. The air still smelt damp, but the temperature was much more comfortable now, a pleasant break from the stifling humidity. An orange light flickered as smoke rose behind the shed. The sound of a guitar and laughter grew louder as you approached the group. They surrounded a small bon fire, each one sitting on large stumps of wood. Vernon noticed your arrival and announced it to the group, introducing you to each member. He pulled out a new slab of wood and offered you a drink.

You sipped on what tasted like a beer and listened to Mingyu’s corny jokes and Seungcheol’s impressions of the head counselors. The rest of the grouped laughed as they were being entertained, their faces glowing brightly in the light of the warm fire. As the noise settled down, the conversation began to get deeper. Members revealed fond memories they had at the camp and their plans for the near future. Seungcheol turned to Vernon, who hadn’t said much the entire night, to ask him what his experience had been like at the camp. Vernon slowly sat up as he began to reveal what life was like growing up their. Silence fell over the group as he spoke, everyone admiring the elegance of his words. No boy was ever so enlightened and assured. He gave off the sense of having graduated to the next stage in life, whereas the rest of us were still daydreaming in class and packing our lunches in brown paper bags. It had seemed as though he had already tasted the real world and returned only to tell us about it. It all seemed so effortless for him, as if he couldn’t help but be wise. However, it wasn’t the type of confidence that intimidated you. Instead, you felt special just being in his atmosphere. When he finished, the group seemed euphoric, as if they had just been told the philosophy of life. As time past, they slowly went back to their light hearted chatter and Vernon made his was over to you.

“Can I sit next to you?” He pulled over a seat without waiting for a response.

“You know, should really be a public speaker or something. The way you had everyone absorbed in your story was incredible!” You exclaimed.

“Oh that? Nah, I was just talking,” he chuckled, “although, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea. It is my last year counseling here before I head to college, so I’ll have to find something to study.” He leaned back against the shed, his nonchalantness taking you by surprise. How was it that a boy who seemed to have his whole life figured out not able to decide on what to do for his future?

“But enough about me, I want to know about you. What’s your story?” He asked sitting up again in attention. The night grew later as you revealed to him your life outside of the camp and your plans for the future. He listened attentively, not missing a word that came out of your mouth, as if each one held a deeper meaning. It was his attempt at figuring you out, gauging how much of yourself you would reveal before getting too uncomfortable. Time seemed to slow down in that moment and everyone else around you faded until it was just the two of you sitting in the smokey air, discussing poetry and music. Suddenly, like a sound as clear as a telephone, you began to hear an echoing voice ring in your ear.

“Let’s go before it get’s too late!” Seungcheol yelled for your attention. The others had already begun to scurry up the hill. The boys stomped out the dying fire, leaving you and Vernon to sit in the dark. You felt a sweaty palm slip into your hand. It was hard to read his emotions in the dark, the only thing you could make out were his eyes. As for his face-the pulpy red lips, the dark feathering of his hair-the dewy glow of his cheeks- all registered dimly in the moonlight. The feeling of his skin lifted you into a sea of bliss and held you suspended. His breathe felt warm against your ear as he whispered, “They show movies every Friday night in the field. We should sit next to each other.” The thought of him wanting to be near you again sent you spiraling and you carried the light feeling of bliss in your chest as you floated back to the warmth of your bed.

In the following days, you saw Vernon often. He would get up early to stretch on the porch which prompted you to set your alarm accordingly. Not much was said between you both during the day. However, meaningful looks were shared across the dining hall table. That’s where you were the closest and could brush one another’s hand as you moved through the lunch line. You both tried your best to contain your excitement, not letting the others see your shared love affair. That's what it had become now, a burning infatuation known only by the two of you. It felt like a secret you never wanted to tell, for fear that it would be tainted. The small interactions left you time to examine him from afar. Even in the distance his actions seemed sincere, steady. Often brushing through his hair with slender fingers and shrinking his eyes with a wide smile.

The warm glow from the spring foliage always lit him in the most flattering yellows. Sun kissed, he sat by the docks watching the boys play in the lake. The water reflected brightly, causing Vernon to lower the silver Ray Bands from his head. This only made him look cooler. A kind of cool only captured in 50′s movies and emulated by teenage boys working at public pools. How was it that you have become so enamored by this creature? He hardly ever spoke to you but his presence carried sensual conversations with your body.

A large white sheet hung between two polls on the field of the campsite. Gray plastic chairs were set in rows to accommodate the campers. An announcement sounded over the camp informing all campers to report to the field for the movie. Tonight was the night you had anticipated for days, time you spent contemplating which side of him you would sit beside or how you would part your hair. The children all took seats near the front leaving the last row for the staff. Vernon sat in the last chair in the row and made sure to sit as far away from Mingyu and Seungcheol as possible to avoid any suspicion. Neither had noticed the unspoken exchanges of longing you shared by the dock or the games of footsies you played under the benches.

Quietly, you took a seat next to him as the opening credits began. He made no eye contact but you had already begun to register his heartbeat and body temperature. Paralyzed by love, you didn’t move as dancing animals hopped across the screen. For the next twenty minutes you felt Vernon’s energy shift. He had never been this anxious before, as if it was his first time sitting next to a girl. It felt as if he was unsure what to do in the moment, as if holding your hand behind the tool shed was step one and step two was something he hadn’t prepared for. With every minute passing, he inched his arm closer to yours. The hairs on his arm brushed against yours and electricity surged through your body once again. Without moving, without breathing, you responded with with equal pressure, then Vernon applied more, and you did the same until you were both joined at the hands. A roar of laughter shook you and Vernon back to reality, returning your hands back to your laps. He chuckled at the comical abruptness and you blushed. He leaned in close to you, still avoiding eye contact.

“Will you go out with me?” He whispered. Mimicking him, you leaned into his ear to respond.

“Yes.”

An ease fell over both of you as images of pink singing elephants and dancing bears flashed across the screen. The laughter of the children became comforting as you relaxed your muscles in the hard plastic seat. As soon as the movie finished you agreed to meet Vernon in the woods near the tennis court. This was the second most secluded area on the site, the supply shed being the first. After tucking the girls in, you heard a soft cooing coming from outside. You peaked your head out to see Vernon crouching in front of the porch.

“Are you ready?” He whispered. Slipping on your muddied shoes you scurried you way through the field and onto the tennis court. He lifted the secret hole in the fence and you slipped underneath, walking into the woods. He waited into you were deep enough into the forest before he lit the kerosene lamp. Finally alone again after days apart, the dark seemed to give you permission to breath him in fully. He hung the lamp on a perfectly placed branch, shinning a yellow light on your face. You shifted your gaze from one eye to another, attempting to read his thoughts. The air around you seem to fill with sweet viscous liquid, a honey nearly light as air, which you both breathed in.

“You are so beautiful,” he caressed your cheek in his hand, “you know that don’t you?” The tenderness in his voice held more value to you than any concerned parent’s ever could. A switch seemed to turn on in your brain and your body took over, lounging in to meet his mouth. You devoured him, sucking the sweet nectar dripping from his lips in the dark. He settled his hands in areas only foreign to other boys. They made their way down your torso and then through your hair and back again, unable to decided which felt better. The loud chirruping of crickets provided the perfect backdrop for the sound of your smacking lips. Like a snake slithering it’s way through a crack in the door, Vernon’s tongue eased into your mouth. It was erotic, a sensation never experienced until now. His tongue roved about in your mouth, searching for a place to hide, and sending shockwaves throughout your entire body. This was pleasure. This was what love felt like.

The last weeks were spent holding each other underneath shaded trees and late night exchanges in the dark. It was almost August now, and all of the violets had finally fallen from their high places, disappearing with the wind. Campers reluctantly packed their belongings in small duffel bags and peeled off pictures new friends from their walls. Exchanging of phone numbers and friendship bracelets took place in the evening after lunch, when parents were scheduled to arrive. You sat on the dock with Vernon, listening to him play an old guitar he snuck from the music room. Although out of tune, he still managed to strum a few notes of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star he remembered from elementary school.

“It’s not my finest work, but you get the idea.” He set the guitar down beside him. The sun bathed you both in gold like it had done every evening you left the dining hall early to meet at the dock.

“Here I have something for you,” he reached into his pocket, pulling out a pink string threaded  with white lettered beads that read his name, “This is so you don’t forget about me.” He tied it around your wrist gently, holding it up to you to examine. You held it tightly to you chest, “It’s beautiful.”

“You know, they say you never really forget your first love,” you said softly.  You both turned to look at one another, trying to memorize every feature of each other’s face so you wouldn’t lose it when you parted ways. Vernon smiled, putting his hand back in yours,“Then I guess we’ll never forget each other.”

 Should be a lot of happy hockey fans here in Ottawa today with the Senators moving on to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after defeating the Boston Bruins in game 6 yesterday. I'm more excited because fishing season starts in 3 weeks. I went to check up on my boat yesterday wishing I could take it out right then. That first trip out to the lake with my buddy Matt can't come soon enough.

 Punisher #11 - Becky Cloonan (writer) Matt Horak (art) Frank Martin (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's the penultimate issue of the EMC drug story. That's the pharmaceutical that turns ordinary people into near indestructible berserker killers. Frank has been captured by the bad guy mercenaries and must fight his way to freedom plus kill all the bad guys. No sweat when you're the Punisher. Becky really stretched my suspension of disbelief with all the injuries that Frank sustains so I might take a break after next issue's conclusion.

 Batwoman #2 - Marguerite Bennett & James Tynion IV (writers) Steve Epting (art) Jeromy Cox (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). It must be hard coming up with names for villains. Here we are introduced to Knife. You can probably guess her weapons of choice.

 Secret Empire #0 - Nick Spencer (writer) Daniel Acuna (art) Rod Reis (prologue art) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). Spoiler Alert: Steve Rogers/Captain America is really a Hydra sleeper agent. Has been since day one. If you can believe that nonsense then you'll love this new Marvel Universe wide crisis crossover. Steve is now the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the new Supreme Leader of Hydra. This is 2017's big event for Marvel with fans anxious to see how the heroes handle the betrayal by one of their best. It's all hands on deck and battle stations all around. Look for the Secret Empire trade dress on the covers of all related tie-in books to get the full story. Have fun Marvel Zombies.

 Batman #21 - Tom King (writer) Jason Fabok (art) Brad Anderson (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). Good timing here with the NHL in playoff season eh. The first few pages features a hockey game brawl. Here's DC's entry in the crossover sweepstakes. It's called "The Button" and it starts here. This looks like an interdimensional story with the smiley face button from Watchmen a major image appearing often. They should have used it as a distinctive trade dress on the covers to help fans find the other parts of the story on the racks easier but they didn't. You'll have to pay close attention to get the whole story. Part 2 hits the racks on April 26 in Flash #21. I am more inclined to read this story than Marvel's "Secret Empire" since this book was better written and drawn than Secret Empire #0.

 The Shaolin Cowboy: Who'll Stop the Reign? #1 - Geof Darrow (story & art) Dave Stewart (colours) Nate Piekos (letters). It's a new 4-issue mini picking up where the last one left off right after Amitoufu (I think that's his name) killed all the zombies. Geof's books are such a visual feast that the weird story fits right in with all the stuff that he puts on the page. This is my favourite type of comic book. A fun story (there are talking vultures) with stunning artwork. The minute details always amaze me.

 Nick Fury #1 - James Robinson (writer) Aco (pencils) Hugo Petrus (inks) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This is a good replacement for the recently ended Black Widow spy series. Nick's got some cool gadgets that would make James Bond envious. Even his eye patch does some nifty things. The vibrant colours make each page pop while this mission hums along with plenty of action. There are hot Hydra agents and a cool as a cucumber hero so I'm going to come back for the next mission.

 Superman #21 - Patrick Gleason & Peter J. Tomasi (writers) Patrick Gleason (pencils) Mick Gray, Joe Prado & Ray McCarthy (inks) John Kalisz, Hi-Fi (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Part 2 of "Black Dawn" makes the Kents' neighbours even creepier. I can't wait to find out what's going on out on the farm.

 Plastic #1 - Doug Wagner (writer) Daniel Hillyard (art) Laura Martin (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). This is some sick stuff right here, as if you couldn't tell from the variant cover with the severed head in a zip lock plastic bag and the fork impaled tongue. This comic book is NOT FOR CHILDREN and follows the misadventures of Victor, a former spy who lives in a fantasy world with his "girlfriend" Virginia. He runs afoul of a very bad man and must repay a blood debt. The art is very good but the story is super cringe worthy. Victor is like the Punisher with autism so you decide whether you want to get to know him or not.

 Guardians of the Galaxy: Dream On #1 - Marc Sumerak (writer) Andrea Di Vito (art) Laura Villari (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). You could not dream up a truer title for this one shot if you tried. Half of this book is a reprint of an original Guardians of the Galaxy adventure from 1990. This is perfect for teens but this mature reader wasn't stimulated intellectually.

 Super Sons #3 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Jorge Jimenez (art) Alejandro Sanchez (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). The boys battle deadly doppelgangers and are overwhelmed. Robin may have found a way to gain the upper hand but I looks like he's too late. A nice cliffhanger last panel to make you want to read the next issue as soon as it hits the racks.

 The Greatest Adventure #1 - Bill Willingham (writer) Cezar Razek (art) Daniela Miwa (colours) Taylor Esposito (letters). I grabbed this off the rack to read based on my love for Bill's most excellent work on Fables. Here he takes a bunch of Edgar Rice Burroughs' fictional characters on a great adventure to stop a mad scientist from assembling a weapon of mass destruction. The biggest name in this group is Tarzan and he and Jane are the only ones that I recognise. There's an innocent pulpy feel to this adventures so it's quite suitable for younger readers.

Recently, my friend Tiffany and I attended our first official red carpet event in Los Angeles. Temple of Geek was invited to attend the Comic Con HQ Premiere Party as Press on the Red Carpet!

I know! Huge moment right?!? Chelsea normally attends events with me, but scheduling got in the way. Therefore, I brought along my friend Tiffany. She’s a hoot!

As some of you might have seen last week, we had the opportunity to interview the amazing Mark Hamill. I am still blown away by how amazing and down to earth this man is. Honestly, he is the biggest fan boy I have ever met. I still can’t believe that Tiffany and I met him.

Kings of Con

Tiffany and I were able to have a quick chat with two of our favorite actors from Supernatural. Rob Benedict and Richard Speight, Jr. have a new show called Kings of Con. Basically, this show is a dramatization of their experiences while on the Supernatural Convention circuit. These two gentlemen take their experiences and those of their close friends and co-actors to create the on stage and behind the scenes moments we see in each episode.

Nolan North

Next, Tiffany and I spoke with Nolan North who is one of the stars of ConMan. Personally, I recognized him from Pretty Little Liars, he plays Spencer Hastings father.

We spoke with Nolan about his character in ConMan and how he felt about Pretty Little Liars coming to an end. Nolan also gave a special shout out to his tv daughter, Troian Bellisario, who was recently married.

Now before everyone get’s super excited we were unable to snag an interview with this amazing man. He was coming down the line doing interviews and when he was about 2 outlets away from us he left. Depression central!

But, we did kind of ambush him as he was trying to leave after the even to at least get a photo with this amazing man.

The Event Overall

All in all, I would call this a very successful red carpet event. The staff were fantastic. They made sure we were able to get as many interviews as possible, without them none of this would have been possible. I hope that we have an opportunity to work with Comic Con HQ again in the very near future.
