I started this over a year ago and came back to it periodically, but I decided to just finally finish it. It’s morphed, undone itself, and transformed many times in the process of illustrating it. Sincerely, I considered giving up on the piece. I am glad I didn’t despite its awkwardness; I admit that it doesn’t sit in the eye well. But somehow I feel that it suits the piece and what it means.

I am, if anything, relieved to have finished an illustration finally. It’s been nearly eight months since my last. Prints are available in my shop. (I also have mini prints for $5cad/$3.40usd!)

How The Nocturnal Bottleneck and Nipples Make Us Human

Almost every post here considers what humans do have, really. It’s a little tiring; realistically every world has its harsh environments and vicious species and a sophont to match. We probably wouldn’t be unique for our adaptability or our persistence or even adrenaline

But our evolution is fucked up as hell, to put it lightly.

Mammals went through what’s been dubbed the nocturnal bottleneck essentially since the start of the mesozoic right up until the Cretaceous ended the archosaur’s exclusive hold over the daylight. We lost a lot of things from every mammal spending most of its time in either a cramped, suffocating burrow or scrounging around in the faint hours of nighttime. Our blood cells lost their nuclei to hold more oxygen while we spent time deep underground, we lost protections against ultraviolet rays in our skin and eyes, we can’t even repair our own DNA using the light of the sun. Most aliens probably wouldn’t have such traits unless their evolution followed a very similar path to ours. They’d be able to see ultraviolet and wouldn’t have to worry about sunburn and all the wonderful privileges essentially all fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles enjoy as we speak. 

There’s also what we gained from spending so much time in the dark.

Brown fat is only found in mammals, it’s a special type of fat which bear cells with several oil droplets and are utterly jammed with mitochondria. This lets it make heat, a lot of it, fast. We don’t even need to shiver to induce this heat generation from brown adipose tissue - factor in our downright hyperactive mitochondria, and we can warm up quickly. Sure, it doesn’t have too much use in adult humans, but it keeps our infants warm and still provides a little boost the whole run we have in this universe.

Unless aliens also went through a time where their small ancestors had to face cold nights, they’d have to produce heat the old fashioned way when chilled. Aliens might have to shiver the whole time they’re in a cold room while the human watches in confusion, quite literally unshaken, and wonders if the room is a lot colder than the thermostat set to 60 says. The aliens stare at their companion in confusion, it’s just a normal temperature to shiver at after all, how is the human sitting so still?

Our small ancestors spending all their time out foraging at night is also why we have such a good sense of touch, smell, and hearing. They were more important senses than vision (we’re lucky to have even redeveloped basic color vision, frankly) at the time and place and simply ended up continuing to serve us well. Birds and reptiles rarely have acute senses of smell and the latter especially are lucky to have acute hearing, and birds rarely have impeccable hearing themselves either. Our skin is free of scales and honed to sensitivity, and our external ears and complicated ear bones provide an immense range of hearing (from 20 all the way to 17,000 hertz!).

Aliens might not be able to pin down the chirp of a cricket or the light click of a lock being picked. The human might be the only one on board a ship that can pick out the finer sounds of the engine’s constant thrum and know the critical difference between when everything is fine and when something is wrong. The human could probably pick out the sounds of an approaching enemy’s careless footsteps - they’re only as light enough for *them* to stop hearing them, after all - and be the one to see the horrified expression (well, more on that later) on their face when we get the drop on them in spite of their perceived stealth. 

But perhaps the most versatile, convoluted, amazing, and utterly unique trait we have is right on your face this instant. Lips.

Lips in most animals are a simple seal to hold in the mouth’s moisture and protect the teeth, even if they’re supple they’re NEVER muscular except in mammals, and we have only one thing to thank for it; milk and nipples. Lips evolved exclusively to allow babies to suckle, it required a vacuum to be created in the mouth, and with no other animal having anything like a nipple it never happened in other animals. Many animals make milk, to be frank, but no other animal has nipples.

Your cheeks and lips are a marvel among tetrapods, no other animal can suck like mammals can. Aliens wouldn’t have straws or even be able to sip from the edge of a glass, they’d have to have a proboscis or simply tilt the whole thing back. Aliens likely won’t have woodwind instruments or balloons you can blow into. We take so much about our lips for granted. Hell, our muscular faces are vital for expressions, we’re probably absolute facial contortionists among a cast of creatures with mandibles and beaks and expressionless scaly maws. Aliens might find us ridiculously easy to read, if anything, compared to their own kind (all the better to deceive them) - or perhaps they’d find us hard to decipher anyways, with our lack of color-changing skin or erectable crests of bright feathers. Baring teeth might not be seen as a sign of aggression in most of the universe, smiling would be all too distinctly human. 

Perhaps with how infectious we are sometimes, that’s what we’d contribute to the universe; others might have to make do with opening their mouths just enough to show their teeth or splaying their innumerable mouthparts with just the right curve, but perhaps we’d teach the galaxy to smile, one ally at a time. 

Wouldn’t that be amazing?

look guys i don’t like to argue but i hate it when people portray equius and nepeta like this:

i mean, they’re both just thirteen, come on.

equius is not her parental figure, and nepeta isn’t a fussy baby that can’t eat her fruits and veggies! equius isn’t some malicious evil guy, he’s just a stupid little teenager. that goes for eridan too (and i guess like, all of the trolls, but especially those two). nepeta’s not some innocent little baby. she’s the same age as all her friends. she kills huge wild beasts on the regular for consumption.

a lot of dubs i’ve seen, too, make nepeta sound like a toddler, and equius like a whole grown adult man, and i don’t really like it because neither of them are those things. (granted, i don’t watch too many dubs, so maybe i am wrong on this)

something really cool happened today that i wanted to share:

my nephew is 9 years old, and a stereotypical little boy. he likes dinosaurs, minecraft, and ninjas.

today i walked in on him excitedly watching Nimona with my dad. (minor spoiler warning!)

i had never heard of it, but i sat down and watched some of it, just to see why he was so happy.

he started narrating it, anticipating parts of it, almost as if he’d seen it before. he had.

we didn’t get to finish it, but i watched it on my own, because it looked fun and i wanted to see how it ended.

and i loved it. it was a fun, exciting, fantastical adventure about the importance of acceptance people who are different to us.

and it had a very clear queer subplot.

one that my nephew hadn’t mentioned at all in his explanation of the film. his summary was “it’s about a monster who helps a knight that was framed for killing the queen”.

and honestly yeah, that is what the film was about.

before sharing it with us, he had watched it all, engrossed himself in the story, took it in entirely, and the part he cared about most was whether Nimona got her acceptance. he wasn’t indoctrinated, or confused, or questioning anything about himself.

he didn’t bat an eyelid over a gay love confession. he just enjoyed the film, raved about it, made my 60 year old dad watch the movie about the monster who didn’t fit in.

he’s still the same little boy who’s been asking us how to get a girlfriend.

the only thing a movie centred around queer and queer-coded characters taught my nephew was that those who are different to him are not monsters. that’s it.

and that dragons are really cool.

i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭

So if you’ve read All Systems Red and been keeping up with the Murderbot show you’ve probably realized there’s quite a bit different about how Murderbot acts in the show compared to in the books, the best way I found I could explain this was just that it seemed much angrier in the show compared to the books where it felt more exasperated/annoyed by what the preservation crew were getting up to.

I’ve seen several people on here talk about how in the show Murderbot has been free for a lot less time than in the books (7000 hours vs 35000, so from almost four years to under a year), and how people believe that that’s one of the reasons Murderbot seems so bad at pretending not to be Rogue because it hasn’t had the same amount of time to be able to practice well… not being that, but I definitely think the same goes for its personality, ignoring the plot, show!Murderbot almost seems like the prequel to the Murderbot we all know and love, a glimpse into the kind of personality book murderbot likely had in the years leading up meeting preservation aux

When the show first came out I watched those first two episodes several times over even though I’d already spent time ranting to friends about all the changes and how it wasn’t bad but I wasn’t sure if i really liked it and how “murderbot didn’t seem like murderbot”, but looking back now I realized it’s just a side of murderbot we’ve seen only once before

Some people who are just getting into Murderbot may not be familiar with the fact that in 2018 Martha Wells released a short oneshot (1k) prequel of when Murderbot was watching episode 44 of sanctuary moon for the first time called Compulsory (it’s free to read check it out if you haven’t). I remember the first time I read it thinking that despite it being written by the author the personality it showed hadn’t really seemed like murderbot. But coming now to the show and seeing everyone’s reactions and thoughts about it made everything kind of slot together for me. Because what we’re seeing (both in Compulsory and the show) is murderbot, it’s just a much younger version of it that’s still working its way through all the media book!murderbot has long since watched and learned from and grew through, those 35000 hours of media is why we have a muderbot that has a more exasperated attitude towards humans versus the angry, freshly hacked murderbot we see in the show.

In a way all that media taught it, perhaps not empathy or pity, but the ability to understand and see humans for what they could be outside of the assholes they usually were to secunits. And we get to see the beginnings of that in Compulsory and I’m certain by the end of this season we’ll get see a similar sort of progression, though I wonder how they’ll end up showing that with all the changes not only to the plot, but also to where this story falls in terms of the timeline.

I know there are people out there hating on the changes in the show and how the murderbot they depict in the show doesn’t feel like the one in the books, but I think you can let yourself enjoy the differences while not letting it detract from book cannon. In all the experience becomes more enjoyable, maybe even a bit endearing, when you look at the show from the perspective of this being a much younger version of our favorite murderbot who is still learning to feel and understand itself and the incompetent and gross and weird humans it’s found itself entangled with

Ok so obviously the Sonic movies always have large themes of having a family. Specifically a found family.

In the third movie (spoilers please scroll if you don’t want to see this) Sonic asks Robotnik if he thinks the doctor would be a good person if he had a family.

Robotnik responds with his orphan speech and how he has no family members alive. He also makes a small mention about how no one is romantically interested but he mentions bio family first.

But Sonic isn’t talking about bio family. We’ve never seen Sonic with his bio family in the movies. His family has always been non relatives. He had Longclaw as a mother figure and now Tom and Maddy are his parents with Tails and Knuckles being his brothers.

Again found family.

When Robotnik finds out his grandfather is alive he jumps right into the idea that he could have a family. Eventually Gerald betrays Ivo and he’s forced to accept that he will never have the chance with his bio family to be his family.

In the end he relizes or maybe accepts that he, like Sonic, has found companionship.

Stone is the one person throughout the movies who has supported him and cared about him. Whether you want to read this as romantic or not it’s still extremely found family.

Extra: I think it’s interesting how the good guys are all part of this big family while the bad guys are always alone.

Knuckles was alone and was technically the villain until he found a friend in Sonic.

The same with Shadow. He is focused on getting revenge for a family he lost but then once again finds companionship in Sonic.

Gerald is good until he loses that family and decides to blow up the earth

Lastly Robotnik is evil and has no one. In the first two movies he’s usually alone. Stone was written in for pretty much the sole reason of making sure Robotnik wasn’t just talking to the air. As he becomes the hero in the end he also accepts that companionship Stone has brought him

real shit though it’s clear some of yall alleged “paige fans” don’t watch ball like 😭 let’s remember that paige is a ROOKIE. a talented one, yes. but a rookie in a new team with new players AND a new coach… uconn is genuinely an outlier in the basketball world — it’s very rare to have a team with such amazing off court chemistry that it translates to on court chemistry, and mind you they have the top recruits in the nation and even around the world. geno has been coaching that team for YEARS. the w is a WHOLEEE different ball game and i’m sure paige is absolutely aware of that.

paige is doing amazing, and i’m sick of the media let alone “FANS” comparing her to caitlin or setting up rather unrealistic expectations for her or even BABYING her like “omg i hope she’s okay i know she doesn’t like losing 🥺🥺🥺” …she’s a grown woman who’s worked so hard to get to where she is and she’s PRO.. i promise you she’s well aware they’re not winning every game, esp against a well established team like the lynx.

she deserves absolutely everything and if seeing everyone around her constantly praise her not only for her ball skills but her genuine heart and personality isn’t proof of it, i don’t know WHAT is.

in short, paige is doing great and dallas is gonna be PERFECTLY FINE. let them marinate for a lil longer and let our rook settle in, find her place in the W, and remember at the end of the day, we’re FANS of a BASKETBALL PLAYER.

i need to talk about this because this is very important to me:

yes, khun is down bad for bam and we KNOW that, but we need to start appreciating the fact that bam is down bad for him too and he’s just as embarrassing about it, like, this is not one sided, guys. the only difference is that bam always has a lot of shit going on, while khun always only deals with bam related problems.

but examples of bam being down bad:

• always singles khun out in a group, he’s the first person he sees and unless someone else interacts with him, he continues to only focus on khun, to the point that endorsi herself talks about this more than once, because she’s jealous that bam isn’t paying attention to her.

• while bam doesn’t like seeing any of his friends hurt, he usually doesn’t stop them from joining fights if they insist on it, he’ll just do his best to protect them. but here’s the thing: if he can help it, he doesn’t even let khun join a fight in a physical way and when khun looks like he’s going to leave his post in his lighthouse, bam explicitly tells him not to do that because it’s too dangerous, because to him khun belongs in the safety of his lighthouses, strategizing and protecting their friends.

• at the end of the day, the person bam is going to open to will always be khun. this is explicitly made aware when he bids both endorsi and yuri good night (two people who are his close friends and he’s known for years, and could’ve open up to at anytime) because they said they were going to rest, but when khun tried to do the same, he stopped him and asked if he could speak to him about the master key. very important!!! bam also wants to be the person khun opens up to, but every time he manages to ask him something personal, they get interrupted (looking at you, endorsi).

• bam actually stated it himself that khun ‘is his most precious friend’ when talking about why he was protecting ran, in terms of him being khun’s brother. enough said about it, khun is already on a whole other level to anybody else, and how insane it is that he’s willing to lay down his life for ran because he knows it would upset khun if anything happened to him?

• RACHEL HERSELF POINTED OUT THAT KHUN IS BAM’S PRIORITY!!! when she asked bam why he was giving her a fair chance in terms of getting the thorn fragment, literally her first assumption was because she had saved khun’s life.

• i also feel that is important to point out that while bam may not want khun in the direct line of danger, there is no one he trusts more than khun, because he knows that at the end of the day he can take care of himself, he just wishes he wasn’t put into a position where he had to. like in the sweetfish situation, he had a choice of where to go and he chose to go to hoaquin because he knew khun was with the sweetfish and he trusted khun to have a plan, even though he was worried.

• lastly, i need to mention this because i have never seen nobody talk about that: bam tries to hold on to the image of himself from the test floor in his interactions with khun a lot. after his time as jue viole grace, every time we see him interacting with other characters we see him serious and determined but rarely smiling, even with his old friends, but with khun i noticed a lot of instances that he does the closed eyed smile to reassure that everything was fine and while a part of me wants to believe that the only reason this happens is because khun just brings out this side of him, i also believe that is because (at least in a subconscious level) he believes that is the version of himself khun grew to care for (since we know bam segregates his personality, since his sworn enemy is the version of himself that is jue viole grace) and if he’s not that version anymore, will khun still care for him? (welp, this just got really angsty).

to end all of this: basically, i feel like we talk a lot about khun and his obsession with bam (affectionate) but we don’t talk enough about bam’s with him because his moments are always more subtle and usually get lost in everything else that’s happening on bam’s life.

and i noticed that we, in the khunbam fandom, tend to be able to read khun better (he truly is easier to read) than bam, but now this post makes me want to do a character study on bam.
