Things like prolonged abuse can give people very uneven social and emotional development. They can be very responsible and "mature for your age" in some areas and also very stunted and immature in others.

This can also happen for, say, LGBT people who were closeted during pivotal periods of development too, where dating and discovering themselves happens later and there can be a development gap for a time. And grief around never getting to be a kid when they were a kid can be a thing for people once they try to connect with the things they had to cut off because they weren't safe to feel them. I went through some of that myself, from various sources, so I have a lot of empathy for that and how absurd/frustrating it can be.

(And a lot of hope - it doesn't, as far as I've seen and experienced, take someone very long to "catch up" after a while of fumbling around like an idiot)

Anyway - sometimes I see people reading Carmy's "accidental fuckboi" behavior in terms of how a grown man who's been dating since he was a teen would be thinking/feeling, if he behaved like that. But, for me, I interpret that differently because of the “first” situation and the developmental stuff. IMO, he's basically being a feckless/inexperienced teenager dating for the first time here, because in this area of his life he is still developmentally a dumb feckless teenager (and one who is trying and failing "not to be shitty" without much of a clue what that looks like).

Doesn't make the harm less real, but the intent I think is shaped deeply by the fact that, for the first time in his life, he feels safe enough (because of how much responsibility Sydney and Nat are taking on and that is absolutely not fair to them!!) to try to enjoy things. And he thinks maybe he can even make that work with being responsible somehow, but... utterly clueless about how.

There's the caveat that he didn't go out and choose to start dating at this pivotal moment for the business - dating found him and there's complexities around how much he wanted it to find him right here and now and how much he feels obligated to be what his family/friends/Claire wants him to be. I think he'd have been able to turn down anyone who wasn't as deeply tied to his family as Claire, and I'm not ignoring his agency in the situation, but they chose to bring someone in who he'd find it incredibly difficult to balance pleasing/doing what he's expected to do by while balancing everything else for a reason.

The "executive function" stuff where he's staring at the calls coming in and unable to answer either of them is key for me, in terms of this being someone who just isn't functioning well rn at all and is coming to a real crisis point and trying to ignore that/salve that any way he can think of. Masking really hard and deep in denial and trying to keep a lot of plates spinning without being very intentional about any of it.

It leads to sucky behavior and he's responsible for that--and the other characters can and should hold him responsible for that, but especially for actually addressing the core gravity warping untreated mental illness that's motivating a lot of this frantic rushing around and being a prick-- but I don't personally see much of it as a crime of intent. Intent requires a level of insight and experience that he doesn't have in the area of dating specifically lol

That balance of someone being responsible for their actions but also, for various reasons, in a place that mitigates and shapes what they're able to do--based on the tools they have--is an interesting part of the story that gets touched on again and again through various characters. It's interesting and it can coexist with the people around someone having the right to protect their own peace and boundaries.

yes! Sometimes it takes me a good long while but i respond to all my comments. if i’m posting something regularly then i will respond to comments as i post but otherwise it can take up to a year sorry everyone

15) What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i finish all my WIPs lol i’ve abandoned two fics in my life and my current WIPs are either a) still in the brain or b) finished and being revised within an inch of their lives

i write about a lot of difficult topics and i do it as carefully and respectfully as i can while not making it so dark as to turn people away. i think i’ve got that balance down. of course these things are experienced differently by everyone so my work won’t always resonate and i’m aware of that and fine with it

17) what are your writing weaknesses?

dude idk. everything at some point or another? at least that’s what it feels like. a thing i consistently really struggle with is i feel like I can get way too florid and indirect with language, which in some contexts is fine, but in others really fucking distracting

18) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

oh boy do i ever have thoughts. but I’ve collected them and because i mostly write third person limited, i don’t put dialogue in other languages in fic for 2 reasons. a) if the character would understand the language, i translate the statements being made in it into English because the story is being conveyed in English and that’s how the character would show their understanding. b) if the character would not understand the language, they would be unable to recognize the words and express them because it’s third person limited. the exception with this is if there is an untranslatable word that has no English equivalent. that i’ll keep in the original language

however. with the behemoth there are consistently two languages being spoken and intermingled throughout. i have kept all the dialogue in English but the parts that are being spoken in Spanish, i am translating from Spanish back into English to try and keep the cadence and vocabulary. it is hard as hell and i know that people will not notice but it matters to me ig

i think the best fic i’ve written is hips but all my work has a special place in my heart. every fic means different things to everyone and i’ve gotten incredibly meaningful and powerful comments on things that i didn’t think were really my best, which made me like those fics more. you never know what will resonate with people and what won’t!

I’ve been getting absolutely shit on by the universe

Fired from my job under false pretense, I got someone with my name permanently in their mouth dogging on me to my friends, I’ve had both the flu and covid (see: me being fired), and now my dog that lives with my parents has just collapsed and isn’t doing well.

I try really really hard to put as much hood as I personally can back into the universe. Maybe I’m not the most positive person ever, I can harp on negativity at times, but I’m just a human. I try to be kind to others, to live with a ‘give the shirt off my back’ mentality to everyone I meet. I try my best to be kind and empathetic at all times. I give what I can as best as I can. I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m not a good enough person that I don’t deserve good back from the universe. But sometimes when all of these really shitty things are happening, it’s hard to not think that on some level it’s all my fault and that I’ve just not been good enough to warrant good back.

I just want to have a steady income, happy friends, and for my dog not to die. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask for and I don’t understand why I’m having to fight so hard rn. I know that pets die, friends go, and jobs are evil— but why is it all at once that things are so shitty and why do I deserve to get hit with something new and painful every other day?

I’ve had a very difficult life, don’t i deserve just a single year where things aren’t a struggle?

I’ve spent half my year hooked on drugs, floundering under my ptsd, being kicked out of my old house due to me not being able to cope with my shit. I thought moving, getting sober, going out less, and learning to keep to myself would fix a lot of things.

But instead, now I’m not around enough to catch when people have lies to tell, I’m not around in my dogs last years, I’m not here to be a part of my own life. Where is balance and how do I learn to grasp it?

I feel like on some level I’m just doing things wrong left and right and can’t seem to get a leg up before the other is kicked beneath me.

I just want a moment where there’s nothing nagging at the back of my mind.

These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though they’re pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS

a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?

I think you’re the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. It’s definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldn’t hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think they’re subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you don’t have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess it’s good if you don’t like to talk to people? LOL

A lot of my previous projects + the show I’ve worked on the longest aren’t public yet so I can’t talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I won’t shut up about it). But I’m currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. I’m like 90% sure I’m allowed to say that.

c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?

@kaitomiury​ Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because it’s a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL. 

I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.

d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?

god there’s so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if you’re really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. There’s a lot of artists who say “I want to do plein air sometime!!” and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.

But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.

My last tip is to check out James Gurney’s youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. There’s lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurney’s probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.

e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?

@marigoldfool​ UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if you’re using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. That’s all I’ve got, frankly I don’t think my drawings are particularly clean lol.

f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?

Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so I’m not gonna re-tread those but here’s another thing that might be helpful...

I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking “I just need to put something behind this character” is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think “I need this bg to make the characters feel small” or “I need this bg to make the world feel colorful” then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.

If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.

Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.

Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.

Some more general art questions

a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?

I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I don’t think I’m that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.

1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artist’s) left? that’s part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.

2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because it’s easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.

Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, it’s probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.

oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, that’s a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. don’t let that stop you! that’s good practice because it’s forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!

b) I’ve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?

Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.

If you’re looking for inspiration though, I’d recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because it’s too close. 

Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesn’t always have to be groundbreaking... like it’s okay to make something shitty and stupid that you don’t post online and only show to your friend. That’s all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.

I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but that’s getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and that’s actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone else’s work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else what’s the point.

For the last one, I don’t actually believe I’ve ever addressed artwork as insp for stories/rp but I’ll say here and now yeah go ahead! As long as you’re not making profit or taking credit for my work then I’m normally ok with it. Especially anything thats private and purely recreational, that’s generally 100% green light go. Willing vs Unwilling: difficult. Because usually my stories will be about taking down someone’s walls and letting other people in. There’s reluctance there, so sometimes it’s manifested as unwilling I suppose. Unless it’s punishment for bad deeds, I obtain consent.

Aware vs Unaware: again, difficult. I usually do a progressional effect, things are unaware until they’re aware of the situation. Sometimes with reality shift it’s something you really have to think through! Are you conscious to the changes or have things always been this way? No preference, it’s just a very important part of the fraction.

Flattering vs Embarrassing: I tend to lean toward flattering. I’m not really about bringing other people down, more celebrating a different version of themselves that they’re striving to be. So with embarrassment, unless it’s possession I usually steer clear.

Pleasurable or Painful: Pleasurable is easier for me to write. I’ve done one or two painful ones and I didn’t like the way I felt after writing them tbh. So not really my cuppa

Anticipated or Unexpexted: this is another tossup. Depends on the story you’re trying to tell. One isn’t better than the other and I really do use them interchangeably. Anticipation for more of a journey storyline; unexpected for a reward, punishment or even coincidental storyline.

Fast vs Slow: honestly, this depends on my mood. Longer stories happen when I’m in a better headspace, shorter in a not so stellar one. I will say however that if they’re too short I don’t get much from them. If they’re too long I just don’t read them. Odd balancing act.

Temporary vs Permenant: I prefer Permanent. Temporary is easier as a plot device than an outcome for me. Temporary changes leading to an overall permanent character shift/growth.

Physicality vs Mentality: Balancing act. Can’t have one without the other. There’s going to be a mental shift no matter what; adjusting to a new existence is going to shift that psyche. Physicality is almost secondary tbh. It’ll depend a lot on the permanence of the situation as well. Another part of the web.

Reward vs Punishment: I’ve touched on this a little already, so I’ll just say that it’s a tossup. It depends on the story!

after asking yeonmi out he’s a little bit terrified he’s going to mess things up so he’s been constantly walking on eggshells when it comes to anything ~romantic~. he’s hesitant to even hold hands with her yet

that being said, personality wise he hasn’t changed at all, though he no longer views her as a pest and actually really adores her even if he can’t quite put that into words. he’s incredibly thankful for not only her friendship but the fact she put up with him being a petty thief as well as dragging her to mcdonalds at least once a week

he’s still a petty thief though, don’t get me wrong. he has barely any money to his name and he’s too prideful to ask for help and would rather find ways to make things work on his own

he’s definitely stopped lying as much, mainly because now that he’s close with yeonmi he feels like he doesn’t have as much to hide, but he’ll be tight lipped around pretty much anyone else still especially when it comes to his past

he always checks his phone first thing when he wakes up and he’s hopeful he has at least one text waiting for him. even if he doesn’t, he’ll text yeonmi first thing no matter what. usually something annoying followed by ‘good morning!! ☆(◒‿◒)☆’ or something similar

he doesn’t have many friends but he has plenty of acquaintances, most are from when he was a bit younger so they’re not incredibly close especially since most of them followed a much different path than he did

still an absolute MESS when it comes to fashion and hair. he can’t put together an outfit to save his life and his hair can maybe be considered a nicely styled bedhead (think: get you alone mv). bright, obnoxious colors and clashing patterns are his favorite

as a side hobby baekhyun got into fps shooters. he’s terrible at them. somehow he’s garnered a small following from streaming nonetheless (really it’s because despite being an idiot he’s quite funny) he eventually wants to move on to other games too

hi! Do you have any tips for gif colouring?

hi there !! uhh, after talking a lot with friends about this, i’ve come to the conclusion that everyone has their own preferences when it comes to colouring gifs, so i don’t know if my tips can help you. but i’ll try to tell you what i like to keep on mind:

for colouring, it depends a lot on what you want to focus on. you can try to make the gif look a certain way, or you can try to avoid certain things. in my case, i don’t have a style i prefer, i just want them to look nice ( to my liking ). i normally just try to bring colour back to pale skins that look that way because of the lightening / filters and i try to take the colour out of videos that are originally coloured a certain way. to be honest, some videos are okay and only need a few adjustments to look good for me. it can go from one single layer to… a lot. but sometimes with five or less they’ll look okay. so, basically, try to find what looks good for you and what doesn’t, and play around with the adjustment layers to find out how to make them look the way you want. for example, i don’t like when a video’s colouring makes the person’s skin look a bit bluish, so i try to enhance colors like red or yellow to fix it. you can do that using the selective coloring tool or color balance, those are my most-used tools.

keep on mind that not everyone will like your colouring. as i said before, everyone has their own preferences and there will be people who like how you colour your gifs, and there will be people who don’t. i find it almost impossible for my colouring to fit everyone’s liking so i try to focus on what i like. it’s not only about preferences, sometimes gifs look different depending on the device you’re using; when i bought a new computer i didn’t like how most of my old gifs looked on here lol and if i go back to my old computer and look at the gifs i’m making now i probably would like to fix a few things on them. so yeeees, it’s really difficult to make them look good on everyone’s eyes ( or devices ) so try to focus on what you like.

i normally avoid using psds. i know it’s difficult to make your own colouring if you’re still learning, and if that’s your case, then probably psds are your best option. but i’ll recommend you to try to learn to make your colourings from scratch, i learned a lot by “ studying ” psds. changing the opacity of the layers, making small changes, adding new layers or deleting those which make the gif look worse can help you with that !!

those are all the tips i can come up with rn, but if there’s anything you’re having trouble with, tell me and i’ll try to help you !! i’m still learning a few things and i change the way i colour my gifs constantly so... but i’ll try to help you as much as i can ~

(sorry tumblr freaked when i tried to post this as an answer) hi babe!!! my tips for applying do change depending on where you are in the world. i live in canada & i only applied for places near me because i didn’t want to go out of the province or the country. but here are some guidelines under the cut that i hope are helpful ^^ (sorry mobile users if it doesn’t show up)

DECIDE ON YOUR BUDGET/LOCATION

this will determine which schools you look at in the first place. i would narrow it down to your top 3 so you can concentrate on making your application the best it can be for those specific places.

ALWAYS have a backup! for reference, i applied to two local universities & one college, but i know people who applied across the country too.

you may be interested to research the social environment of a certain university too!! some have more of a party life than others but most have a decent balance as far as i know.

READ ALL THE REQUIREMENTS. TWICE.

the worst thing in the world is getting to that uni application process & realizing oh shit! i missed out on doing this one thing i needed or this one deadline! so just make sure you know exactly what you need for all the programs you’re interested in, even if it’s just a tiny bit of a chance that you might want to, for example, do Science even tho you’re primarily interested in Arts.

make sure to do this as early as you can. research all the requirements of any programs of any school you want to go to. i recommend keeping a document on your computer or a physical notebook writing down what you need to qualify for each program!

it’s also helpful to note down average admission GPA or other specific things like needed courses or things! i’m a huge planner & hate being caught unawares so this really helped me.

also check back often to see bc sometimes requirements can change randomly!!

REACH OUT TO TEACHERS

if you’re applying for scholarships, you might need reference letters and it doesn’t hurt to have teachers in your corner :) make sure you’re on good terms with them and let them know if possible what your future aspirations are.

also i know it’s so difficult with covid rn but see if you can get in touch with guidance counselors to see if they can help ^^

IT’S OKAY NOT TO GET IN!

even if you don’t make it into x program, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. a lot of people i know ended up doing their second choice program, but now they’re SO glad they didn’t get into the original bachelors they picked! plus, there is always time to transfer or switch or anything so don’t worry and just try to put your best foot forward without too much pressure on yourself for that first application.

there’s no worries about taking a gap year too. i kind of wish i had done one as i got really burnt out by the beginning of 3rd year.

here are some general tips for uni too <3 i hope this helps! pls feel free to send in any more questions/specific queries if you have em :’)

I woke up way too early bc of the heat, so I turned off the broken AC and decided to visit a bit before falling back to sleep.

I've been trying to connect with L more bc of the self-ship thing and basically how things have come 'round full circle after 17 years. But it's hard, having the knowledge I do now of headspace and thoughtforms, that I did not have back then. The balance is... Difficult for more, and he always tries to match whatever my comfort levels and wants/needs are at the time. It is very hard to keep up with and I appreciate him and his efforts and I love him all the same for it. <3

But that's not what this post is really about.

It was right before work for him in the living/active realm of my/shared headspace. What I often tag or speak of as The Three Kingsoms, or sometimes Three Realms if i'm totally braindead and forgot what i used to call it. I thought I was gonna get back to sleep/would need to stay awake, but he told/reminded me that I could always visit Morty if I was gonna be that bored. L reminded me that my guide missed me, probably as much as I did him, and that it wouldn't hurt to actually visit him if I was going to try to reconnect with the world(s) there.

Or something like that.

I sighed and agreed, expecting a mouthful for not visiting sooner.

What I did not expect was a big hug and a tearful (sort of) reunion from him. How he's been worried about me and asked if I was okay due to recent events, and that I shouldn't be afraid to talk to him, and stuff like that. We talked a bit more about other stuff, like what was going on between me and L (he knows even without asking, but he didn't press when I looked away and said it's complicated, bc we all know the matters at hand), and I told him about current events, mostly what's happened in the last week, the last 24hrs, and how one of my friends that he knows is deeply struggling. He was, as I should have expected (but didn't realize until just now), overcome with worry over us both and asked if there was anything he could do to help her, given the complications of belief systems. I remember saying, "God have mercy on her, because He sure isn't right now". I don't even know if that's my god anymore, given my own apathetic removal/change/acceptance of other high-level spirits and deities. (Maybe I should really ask Hermes for help, too, for her.... If nothing else, maybe he can go to her higher power and convince him to let up so she can at least get some rest and a break and... It's not my story to tell, but it's a lot rn, a lot more than what I went thru)

But anyways. It was... Surprisingly nice and comforting to know that I was loved and missed by my friend. Companion? Guide? Is it weird that recently i've grown to consider or call him a best friend even though I hadn't interacted with him in years? And didn't prior this month?

But it was nice. I love him too, and I'm sorry for not talking to him sooner. I'll do my best to approach him more, esp when L is busy and I can't visit him. I'll have at least the next two weeks off due to events, and I know he's gonna worry over me like a mother hen (and her, too, but there's not much that can be done there....), but... I'm glad. I could use the company again. L has been hinting and nudging me to go visit him again anyways, whenever he can fit it in. I'm glad he did; I'm glad I finally did.

If only I can remember this.

favorite muse(s) you’ve written: It's like choosing a favorite child!! I've written so many muses over the course of the past 8 years, good god... let me think.

I think Toshiko Sato was my favorite muse to write, but that’s probably due to the nostalgia factor. Tosh was the first muse I ever roleplayed on Tumblr. Unfortunately, most of the Torchwood fandom has left and it’s barely hanging on. So, for nostalgia’s sake and for the good memories I have roleplaying good ol’ Tosh, she is one of my very favorite muses.

As for present day muses I write often, I’d say it’s a tie between Lydia & Gwen. 

Lydia has such an expressive personality! I love getting to play around with her sense of self-righteousness and vanity, while also getting to expose a bit of the softer, insecurities she has. I love the way it feels to write her and I always feel exhilarated after writing a decent Lydia reply. : )

Gwen, however, is just as fun! I love playing around with the fact that she has superpowers and seeing how that can effect even mundane situations. Seeing how her thoughts change based on her trust with another muse. Who she’ll let in on the secret of who she really is. Who she’ll have to struggle to keep secrets with. I love her dynamics with other muses! I love the balance I have between angst and soft-as-fuck threads rn! 

So, um, basically... I just love all of my muses a lot and this was way too hard to narrow down. So! It had to be three. OOP.

what inspired you to take on this muse: I’ve always felt that Gwen Stacy has gotten the short end of the stick. Stan Lee loved her and originally wanted her to end up as Peter’s love interest, but when he was away... they killed her off. Her death is one of the only real permanent deaths I can think of when it comes to Marvel. Everyone else has sort of just come back in one way or another. Anyways! So, comic-wise... she was mostly gone. 

Then, if we move on over to the movies (apart from Spider-Verse, we’ll get there lol), we notice that Gwen Stacy still gets the short end of the stick. In the movies,Gwen Stacy is used only as a plot device. She is either used as a way for Mary Jane to get jealous (by using Gwen as ‘the other woman’) or it’s just a way for them to show the depth of Spider-Man’s character...by (you guessed it) killing her off... again. Yippee...

So, why do I care so much for Gwen? She’s intelligent! She’s passionate! She’s a wonderful character! Hell, I grew up wanting to play her one day. (I also, um, cosplay her in my spare time but uhhhhh anyways!!) So, I thought... Hey! I love to write, couldn’t I just??? Role-play Gwen???? But before I had the chance, she had suddenly made a cameo in Spider-Verse and damn was I nervous. I left the theatre feeling like there was finally a place where Gwen mattered to Marvel in a way that wasn’t superficial and I loved it. I had read a bit of the comic, but seeing as there was also Gwenpool and all of this sudden surge in Gwen Stacy’s importance, I had worried it was just a cash grab, so my hopes weren’t up!

So, um, to put it simply: What inspired me to take on this muse was my immense love for the character and the feeling of heartache I get when I see how absolutely left out her character is.

what are your favourite aspects of your current muse(s): Oh, god, that’s difficult! Probably her passion and her curiosity. She loves people, but is too over-analytical when it comes to her concerns, since she’s worried she’ll put them in danger somehow. In most threads, she’s already lost Peter. Her love for others and feelings of isolation make her a fun muse, but it also makes it a bit lonely to write her at times. So, um, basically everything... I guess?

what’s your biggest inspiration when it comes to writing: The people I write with, writing songs & poetry, and music inspire me most. I also have a little server with @kanima-claws that constantly inspires me to write more and get out of my head. I’m really blessed to have a best friend who can support my passions and reminds me that I’m good enough. : ) 

favourite types of threads: I’m a sucker for the softer stuff, but I also adore angst. What can I say? I’m predictable. I write what I like. ; )

biggest struggle in regards to your current muse: I’m busy! I’m in school, currently, and I also have a few responsibilities IRL! I have a whole music-thing going on right now that I’m working on and I‘m just really trying to balance everything, while also maintaining a decent social life, a good night’s sleep, and good replies. I love writing SO much, but I always worry I’ll disappoint people if I take a little more time to reply to a certain thread. :”) It be like that sometimes.

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

dunno what ‘this way’ specifically means, but I tried reenacting the way a lot of my fav fics have been, in way of word count per chapter, character interaction, plot balanced w/ the ship, ect

2: What scene did you first put down?

Maaan, it’s hard to remember what came first now. I have a doc thats like, 20 pages of just notes & me outlining the plot and world building. The first scene written on that doc is lloyd revealing his identity to the team, which actually happens about a year before the start of the story!

3: What’s your favorite line of narration?

hmmmm, I’m a sucker for when the narration contradicts the dialogue- I just think it’s really funny, pfft. can’t think of any large scenes I do that in rn, but I also really like this bit, during the city hall meeting The woman sitting at the corner chair closest to the ninja shifted in her seat, and stared pointedly at Kai and Jay. Kai tried not to shift under her stare, but he could feel Jay stiffen next to him. “You two saved Satoshi the night King’s was attacked, right?” Kai’s mouth was immediately dry and his brain cut out. Her voice wasn’t loud, but compared to the silence before, she might as well have fired a gun. The question itself was straightforward enough, but Kai hesitated to answer - first, because Green ordered them not to speak, and second, he had no idea what she was talking about. I try to keep Kai a reliable narrator (aka I project a lot) and I feel like this part is funny for first-time readers, bc you get the feeling of “do I know who that is??? Did I forget?” then kai confirms it like “who tf”

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

Kai looked up from their hands to meet Jay’s eyes, all warmth and kindness. “I dunno. I’ve only know you for a month, but I still feel as close to you as I do any of them.”

5: What part was hardest to write?

GOD ALL OF THE FIGHT SCENES,,, this fic was so ambitious oh my god. That’s part of why the final chapter is taking a lot longer than normal- big fight scene ;v; also the meeting with the mayor was difficult to write bc like, I dont know shit about how city government works. My search history for the time I was writing that scene looked like I was researching for an essay, christ. 

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

7: Where did the title come from?

real honesty hours: I thre in the bit about Kai giving Jay his earbuds on impulse. I never planned for them to be a reoccurring symbolic plot device or for them to even exist but damn, here we are.

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?

My relationship with my brother def inspires how I write Kai & Nya. I say that I project onto kai a lot, but I project all of my ‘trans younger sibling’ energy onto Nya. ngl, most everything I’ve done in this fic was inspired by batman tho

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Yeah, I have around 3 scrapped scenes. I’ll probably never release them, bc they were scrapped for a reason :,3

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

Kai & Jay are the most boring out of the four boys :, ) so I figure’d it’d be easiest to fit their charters into the plot I had in mind, I couldn’t think of any way to fit in the “zane’s a robot” or “cole literally died” plot into it without making the entire story about those things. If I was made out of time tho, you bet earbuds would be a polyninja story.

11: What do you like best about this fic?

I honestly just like that I’ve gotten as far as I have into it, and the perception that its gotten has been so incredible //sobs. Aside from that, my favorite parts about it are probably Kai & Nya/Lloyd’s relationship, and also that Nya is trans. I hadn’t seen any fics where she was trans before, and tbfh its my favorite headcanon. I’ll never write a cis nya in my life

12: What do you like least about this fic?

The relationship build up seems kinda... eh? I definitely should've put more into it, but at the same time I feel like I did as much as I could with it, just bc I’m so inexperienced with that stuff. I also with I could do a better job of conveying the vibe that I want this version of ninjago to give off (gritty, rough, gotham) but without being super edgy about it?  Also I’m really upset that Cole & Zane are getting shafted in Earbuds. I should’ve come up with more stuff to include them, but everything I came up with just felt forced, so they ended up just being background characters- which is was more than they deserve, bc they’re honestly my favorite boys on the team.

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

Well, there’s always the 8tracks playlist I made a while back (should transfer that onto spotify sometime) but theres a couple songs that I think fit the characters super well that aren’t on the list • “Fresh Eyes” is a super great Kai&Jay song QwQ “so suddenly I’m in love with a stranger / I can’t believe she’s mine / now all I see is you with fresh eyes” From Kai’s pov @ jay??? hell • “Better days” was a song rec sent in by my good bud hedley-ramsay anon, and it’s perfect for Kai’s POV, as he’s trying to stay optimistic about all the shit thats happening around him “Guess I didn't break it, but I bent it / I know I didn't say it, but I meant it / I shoulda had a little more heart and soul” • “Miss Atomic Bomb” is very very good for Lloyd & Harumi. tbh its a good song for them in canon too, but the dark city vibe it gives off fits so well with the Earbuds AU. “I was new in town, the boy with the eager eyes / I never was a quitter, oblivious to schoolgirls' lies” • “Be Still” is also a super great song for lloyd, in this au and just in general. “Be still / wild and young / long may your innocence reign” DONT CALL ME OUT I REALLY LIKE THE KILLERS

14. Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?

not... really? its a fanfiction about legos, I dunno if there’s any lesson to be learned from it. Be gay & do crimes

15. What did you learn from writing this fic?

writing fanfic is super rewarding & fun!! It’s a pretty pig time sink sometimes, but damn if yall don’t make it worth it.

You tugged your scarf closer to your face as you walked down the streets of Seoul. You were creating a mental map in your head of the area surrounding you.

Although you've been living in Seoul for 3 years already, you haven't quite gotten the hang of going around. Having almost no other connections in the country has also been making it more difficult.

The words were ringing in your ears, the lingering chill that spiked down your spine, as if they were just spoken.

"Y/N I forbid you, I swear you better come back here before you regret it."

Old news you didn’t need to think about, baggage you were still letting go.

It was later in the night, most residents and tourists have retreated into their homes and hotels by now.

However, a good handful of people were still milling about, friends hanging out, adults having late night drinks, or late night shopping. Specifically grocery shopping, which was where you fell in the categories.

The streets were illuminated by golden glows and neon colored signs, advertising hole-in-the-wall restaurants and tourist attractions. Instead, what caught your eye was everyone's fan favorite: the 24 hour convenience store, it indeed deserved that name.

A breeze from outside rushed behind you as you entered the store, your brown hair flew around your face, along with your scarf. You grabbed a basket with one hand as the other is busy trying to tame your airborne hair.

You started down the aisles, picking out the cheapest food items and ingredients you could find. The life of a student.

There was no one else in the store but the cashier, an old man who was busy watching the small TV monitor on the wall and counting money at the register, most likely his earnings from earlier in the day.

You hadn’t gone grocery shopping in a long time, living in a small dorm by yourself didn’t really prompt a lot of needs that needed to be replenished often. Not to mention your lack of eating, sometimes remembering mealtimes was easier said than done.

You filled your basket with the last few snacks that your hands could grabbed before striding towards the register. You politely greeted the cashier, reaching into the pocket of your long coat and pulling out a few coupons and cash, ready to hand them over.

While the old man scanned your items, you noticed all the posters and pictures plastered all over the wall behind him.

Idol groups: boys and girls alike, all very beautiful, a little unreal you might add. Many of them were group photo shoots but some had members individual headshots.

You recognized many groups displayed, from the big-shots like BTS, EXO, and Twice. To upcoming phenomenons like NCT's 18 member super group, just to name a few.

A sad smile curved on your lips, you had a push and pull relationship with idol groups, never quite cemented your opinions on them.

You've never had a issues with the idols themselves, in fact you used to be a huge fan, following so many groups, listening to their music, and even learning their fanchants, the whole shabang. That was the pull towards the appeal. Idols used to be your role models for as long as you could remember.

Repeat that: used to be.

The industry that produced Idols was what killed your appeal. That's the push. When you were younger you had no idea what it took to be in the limelight of the idol industry, of the trainee life.

But who could you blame, a majority of the world never knows that it takes to be successful, you were no different.

Over time, the idea of boys and girls your age being subjected to their looks and physical appearance, whether their voices were deemed alright, and collapsing from over exerting their bodies dancing. It was all too much for you, even as someone on the side lines.

Don't even get yourself started on the negatives of the fans and fandoms. However, the only light to shed on this was that at least Kpop isn’t the only industry that had extremes among those that enjoy it. Western music fans that were toxic over there, were just as extreme too.

You knew that most fans were regular people and just enjoy the music and the bands but sometimes the polarizing few become too much. Maybe it's human nature to have bad apples everywhere.

One incident you remembered a few years ago was the Shinee’s Taemin and APink’s Eaeun situation. A perfect example of the viciousness of fans and their hate and outbursts whenever they saw their idols do something they don't like.

They'd stalk, harass, and belittle anyone that was even in a 10 ft vicinity of the star. Following them around saying disgusting insults, hammering the nails even further. You don't think you’ve ever seen two people in such distress before.

It was such a shame really, for all we know Shinee's makane may have really loved her like he said on the show.

Now years later, the two are left to only avoid each other on stages and music shows when their groups cross paths. Minimizing contact at all cost to protect Eaeun from further harassment for just being around him.

And that wasn't even a scandal, some fans just couldn't stand their oppa being potentially happy with another person.

to be honest that whole section was me being emo after I watched so many videos about it and for all i know none of it was true or real or it was real and they were hurt because of it, either way i don’t feel like deleting it so sorry to anyone annoyed by it lmao

Although idols weren’t on your radar anymore, you would always know of them, it's inevitable. You were living in the time where they were growing the most international.

Music has always been a love of yours and that's all you’ve been focusing on ever since you came to Seoul. That's probably the last connection you had to idols, your love for music, your love for what you do.

The old man finished ringing you up, bagging all of your groceries and handing you the receipt.

"Hold on dear," the elder said, as he crouched down and shuffled with something under the desk.

Restlessly, you tapped your fingers against the counter. Looking around at all the idol merchandise, your eyes were drawn on to the TV monitor.

"N E X T  W E E K  O N  M N E T!" 

On the TV screen, many different clips of a few boys wearing dark clothes in a dance studio flashed by. There was a voice over, by an older man, explaining the tasks the trainees had to overcome. It was an idol survival show.

In some flashes they were sitting in a half circle talking intensely, in others they were dancing to choreography as one person sat out giving thorough feedback. However, the last clip showed a lot of the boys individually, either writing lyrics or practicing the lines.

You had barely caught the large strikingly red S and K at the end of the clip before the old man bounced up from searching below, stealing your attention again.

"Aha I found it!"

He brought out a small booklet, as if it was a manual you’d get along with a new speaker you'd buy. A manual it was not. You looked at the cover featuring a subtle sky blue with the Hangul lettering in white.

SCOUTING: COMPANY AUDITION & EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

"You, young lady, look like these idol kids that are hung up on this wall," he gestured behind him while placing the small book into one of the bags. "We're given these little things all the time by a handful of companies to 'scout for rough potential.’ We only give them out during the day but since you're here so late I figured why not give you one eh?"

You stared oddly at the bags full of your food and now with a book that's basically a catalog of idol company hotlines. Looking back and forth between the wall of posters and the old man's kind smile you felt your cheeks blush at the gesture as you hesitantly smiled back.

"Uhh . . . thank you sir you are very generous," you stiffly bow, thanking him for the bags, still slightly baffled by the idol comment.

Ironic. You still remembered being told the same thing once, but that it’d be the only thing you’d be known for.

How superficial.

To save yourself from further embarrassment you briskly headed for the door. The chilly fall air brushed against your cheek, the bags in your hands slightly swaying due to the quick pace. Walking only a few feet away from the convenience store, you looked down at the bags thinking about what the man said.

Yeah right, become an idol your ass.

Before you could look up you felt your right shoulder collide into another figure, earning a loud yelp from the both of you. You dropped your bags as you stumbled slightly losing your balance while the other person, who you realized was a guy, stumbled on his step too.

The guy reached his hands out and gripped your arms on both sides steadying you. Because of the small tug from his motion, you had accidentally taken a step towards him, slightly closing the space between you guys.

"Are you alright?" a deep voice asked, filled with concern. Shocked, our eyes flickered to meet his. English?

He had ebony brown hair parted on the left side of his face. It was a tad longer than most of the men’s hair you see around but the way it flowed just to his eyebrows perfectly framed his sharp pale face.

He was decked in all black clothing, sneakers and all. He was only maybe 3 or 4 inches taller than you yet his dark hoodie and jeans seemed to make his figure tower over you. His jaw was angular, skin a little paler than yours and lightly dusted across his nose and cheeks were freckles.

bahaha apparently he is 5' 7  rn its okay tho because i’m hella short

"Yeah I am,"  you mumbled back, stunned by his dark eyes staring down at you.

He grinned at you showing of a white smile. He gently let go of your arms and crouched down to pick up the fallen bags. "I think we're both going to run into something worse than each other someday if we don't pay attention to where we're going."

You quirked up an eyebrow. "You speak English?"

"I don’t know, does it sound like I'm speaking Spanish?" he chuckled at his own joke. 

His voice was like the ocean itself. A deep flowing tone, miles under sea level, it was a complete contrast from the pretty face it was coming from.

Your ears seemed to ring listening to his voice. An accent of some sort? It wasn't an American accent like your own, nor was it European, it was distinct. You couldn't really put a finger on it.

"Don't take offense to this but are you a foreigner too?" you questioned.

"Hmm I wonder what gave it away," he flashed you an amused look, carefully handing over the bags full of your groceries. "But yes I am, you?"

"I guess we're both in the foreigners club here," you said looking up at him. "I'm from the States."

"Ahh so I got an American on my hands."

You furrowed your eyebrows at him half amused and half curious.

"And what's that supposed to mean huh?" you shot back. He laughed at your counter, the happy sound echoing through the street.

"I knew you couldn't have been another Aussie," he shoved his hands in his pockets, tilting his head a bit, as if thinking about how he wants to form his next comment. "Your accent made that clear, love."

You couldn’t help but giggle at his words, him following suit. So he's Korean Australian, that's new. 

You thought it was only the British that said love.

An electronic ding rings out of the boy's jacket. Quickly pulling his hands out of his pocket with a phone in grip, he opened up the device to view a message he just received.

Sighing, he typed a quick reply to the other person on the other end. You noticed the slight bags under his eyes as his faces was illuminated from the phone. His posture was relaxed but slightly rigid in some movements.

He was clearly exhausted.

When he looked back at you, you took a step back putting some distance between each other, bending down and respectfully bowed to him, greeting him in Korean.

He bowed and greeted you back.

"I'm sorry for bumping into you, I didn't realize it was possible to bump into someone in plain sight," he said, shyly scratching the back of his neck.

You waved him off. "It's okay, I should've been watching where I was going but thank you for helping me."

"It's the least I can do after I sent you spiraling," he replied. He flinched as a few more buzzes went of from his phone, clearly whoever was texting him wasn't willing to wait much longer.

Time to go.

"Looks like my fellow foreigner has to go," You said, tilting your head to the side. "Seems urgent."

"Just my hyungs," he sighed, rubbing his eyes a little. "It was my turn to get snacks for home. Didn't realize I was on a time frame though."

"Lose a bet?"

"Something like that," he said. He held a hand out with the same grin on his face from before. "Well Miss America it was nice bumping into you."

You reached out to shake his hand.

His big hand I'm sorry I snorted writing this haha was warm, delicately holding onto your smaller one, they seemed to tingle at the touch. "I could say the same thing too, Aussie."

You let go of each other hands and exchange a small bow again. The brown haired boy started a step towards the convenience store until he paused and turned back to look at you. He seemed to be debating if it was worth to ask you something.

"Are you busy tomorrow?" He asked.

"Haven't even known each other for an hour," you jokingly raised an eyebrow at him. "Straight forward I see."

He laughed while taking off his beanie, running his fingers through his hair a little. He played the edges of his sweatshirt looking a way a bit, fidgeting.

"Well if you aren't doing anything tomorrow night you should come to Sinchon. I heard there's a lot of busking in the streets since it'll be Friday," he rushed.

"And you want me to come watch with you?" you pressed back. It was an interesting hang out choice for sure, but he's sparked your curiosity. You wanted to mess with him a little longer. "How will I find you? Doesn't seem safe to just give my phone number to a stranger I met on the street. I mean come on we haven't even exchanged names."

His face perked up. Clearly surprised that you were playing along with him. "It's Felix, Lee Felix. And what does my favorite foreigner call themselves?

"Ha ha ha you think you're so witty don't you? I'm Min y/n."

His eyes glistened under the city lights, you felt your heart pound faster at the way his face changed into content after learning your name. "So what do you say miss y/n? Care to join a night of fun with your favorite foreigner?"

"Hmm, maybe you'll see me there," you joked sarcastically. "How am I supposed to turn down the offer of a lifetime?"

You weren’t lying to be honest, even though the idea of watching some buskers was interesting, you weren’t completely sure if you could go. You had a long schedule for tomorrow but you didn't have the heart to ruin his excitement.

Felix's hand shot down back into his pocket to fish out his phone again before handing it to you looking away quickly, avoiding your eyes.

"Maybe you'll feel better if we had a way to let each other know when we'll be there," he mumbled, his cheeks tinting a bit pink.

"Is that how you're going to ask for my number?"

"If it's working then yes."

Laughing at his honestly you gingerly took the phone out of his hands and put in your number. His fingers lightly brushed against your own causing tingles to travel up your hands. 

Ignoring the flutters in your stomach, you frantically typed in your info, becoming very embarrassed every time you made a typo. Feeling a heavy gaze watching you, you had barely missed the small comment that slipped out of his lips. 

"Cute," he muttered under his breath.

You felt like digging yourself in a hole while you waited for him to put in his own number on your phone, openly spamming in some middle school emoji choices for the heck of it.

His cheeks raised up as a smile lit up on his face. "Can't wait to see you there!" You nodded happily at him trying to calm the nerves that were spreading through your body. 

What kind of trouble were you getting yourself into?

You urged him to finally head towards the store, it was like you could hear more message alerts already coming of his phone from a mile away. Waving goodbye as we walked away from each other, you couldn't help but feel the excitement building up already inside. You haven't had a light hearted conversation like this in a long time.

You closed your eyes seeing the painted image of his dark eyes looking down at you, hearing his deep voice that hilariously did not match his face. 

His voice.

You whipped around from where you were, only a few feet further from the store and where you just spoke. You spotted the same boy right in front of the store, just about to push the door in.

"Hey Aussie!" 

Your shout echoed through the empty dark street. The sky was clear and the moon was out, a perfect chilly day in November. 

He turned to your direction surprised at your call. Doing the same head tilt like before, he was about to reply until you beat him to it.

"I like your accent." 

His eyes twinkled a bit as he smirked back, amused.

"I like yours too."
