a bite-sized nanami x f!reader sickfic as i recover from a cold of my own 💖 suggestive but no smut
You give a hearty sniffle, the covers tucked up to your chin as you huddle under the warm blanket, shivering. You sigh. You hate being sick. You’ve been laid up for the past day with a fever, stuffy nose, and scratchy throat. There’s no end in sight yet—but, to your luck, your sweet husband has stayed home to play nurse for you. And you do love being taken care of by him.
“Kento,” you call out, your voice hoarse, cracking around the edges. You cringe at the sound.
You don’t see how Kento halts in the next room, warmth pooling low in his stomach. You have no idea how deeply, how instantly, it affects him—the sound of your voice, pitched low and throaty like this. He reminds himself for the hundredth time that you need rest, that he has no right to jump your bones when you’re sick and exhausted. No matter how infuriatingly sexy you sound. He clears his throat, trying to gather himself.
“Yes, darling?” you hear from the living room. His tone betrays nothing.
“Can you bring me some water please? I’m all out.”
“Sure, be right there.”
You stare at the ceiling, slightly dizzy, as your husband bustles about in the kitchen. Soon he’s by your bedside with a glass of cool water, a small plate, an apple, and a paring knife.
He guides the glass into your hands, watching approvingly as you take a long sip. Then he picks up the apple and the knife and begins peeling it. You watch him with a smile, your cheeks and lips flushed rosy with fever.
“How did I ever deserve such an attentive husband,” you murmur, your voice like warm gravel. Kento’s hands falter for just a second. He clears his throat and resumes cutting small slices of the fruit. He feels the beginnings of a flush creeping up the back of his neck.
“Hush. You know I love taking care of you.”
Your chuckle is like a soft burble of water, punctuated at the end by a sniff. Kento holds a piece of apple up to your mouth, which you dutifully open for him. He pokes the piece between your lips, his thumb grazing your bottom lip as he withdraws his hand.
“Mm, tastes good,” you hum, low and soft, around the mouthful of fruit. The sound goes straight to Kento’s groin, and he coughs to dislodge the breath that catches in his throat. You peer up at him, concerned.
“You’re not getting sick too, are you?”
“I’m fine,” he assures you, smoothing your hair from your forehead. You catch his wrist and tug, trying to pull him closer, even weak as you are in this state. He leans forward to humor you. You scrutinize him with eyes soft and glassy from fever.
“You’re flushed, Kento. Are you sure you don’t have a fever?” you worry, pressing the back of your hand to his forehead. He lets out a soft sigh at the contact, his eyes fluttering for a moment.
“I’m not sick, sweetheart. Just guilty of loving my wife too much,” Kento murmurs. He pulls your hand from his forehead to place a soft kiss to your palm. You shudder at the tender brush of his lips on your skin, made extra sensitive from fatigue and fever.
“Do you love her enough to give her a kiss, even though she’s full of germs?” you wheedle, eyes crinkling at the edges as you smile at him. He chuckles as he laces his fingers with yours.
“I love her enough to give her much more than a kiss,” he smirks. You shiver again, this time not from fever, and you clench your thighs together as Nanami traces the softness of your bottom lip with his thumb. You let out a breathy sigh as he noses into your cheek before pressing a chaste kiss to your lips.
“But, as enticing as you are, you need your rest, love.”
You pout, letting out a disappointed sound as Kento pulls back. His gaze is soft but firm.
“Don’t whine. Get well first, then I’ll lavish you with all my saved up affection. I promise,” he says, his voice hushed, as he presses a final kiss to the top of your head.
You chew your lip before giving him a reluctant nod. You snuggle back under the covers, your eyes slipping shut. You’re filled with the determination to heal now, if you’re to get what you want out of your husband.
Kento watches you as your breathing evens out, your brow relaxing as a feverish sleep pulls you under once again. He sits there for a while, just admiring you—the way your hair splays out on the pillow, your warm cheek smushed so cutely against it, your lips parted as a soft, sleepy moan escapes you.
Kento stands suddenly. He makes a beeline for the bathroom, his pants tight. He chastises himself as he swallows the urge to rip off your blankets and keep you warm another way.

Word Count: ~3.8k Warnings: Mentions of drinking and smoking. Otherwise, straight up Christmas fluff. A/N: Hey Anon #2, I don’t know what you meant by the stories of Shawn singing “Creep”, but I liked your idea otherwise, so with a few alterations, this was what I came up with. And Anon #1, I wanted to try to work in a couple of your prompts but this didn't turn out the way I had originally planned. I still wanted to thank you though! (I might use your ideas for future stories, if that's all right. A few could easily work as non-Christmas blurbs!) I hope you all enjoy this holiday story. I'm sorry it posted after Christmas for many of you. I haven't had much inspiration to write lately, and I've been a bit sick this week, so I'm hoping it's still good enough. I always proofread, but please forgive any errors I may have missed! Merry Christmas, my dears...!!
~ * ~
“Ladybug?”
You hadn’t heard that nickname in several months and had only ever been called that by one person. You turned toward the voice and there he stood, all 6’3” of him, thicker than he had been the last time you had seen him this close before you. You knew he’d been training regularly to stay fit for the European and North American legs of the tour he finished two months earlier.
It made no matter if he was lean and lanky or a bit more muscular, Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was impossibly beautiful.
Your heart always drummed faster when you were in his presence. That had never changed. In fact, it was worse not having seen him face to face in so long.
“Hey Rockstar,” you grinned, your eyes meeting his olive ringed, amber hued brown.
“Oh my God!” he laughed, pulling you into a hug that caused warmth and latent yearning to burst and envelop every inch of you. His embrace lasted longer than you expected and you reveled in it, breathing him in. “What are you doing in LA?” he asked when he finally eased away.
“Working. Always working,” you snickered. “I’ve had assignments here for the past few weeks. What are you doing here?”
“Meetings.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Which couldn’t have waited till after the New Year?”
“I know, eh? But Andrew was adamant and didn’t want things overshadowing the holidays.”
“So, important stuff,” you indicated.
“Not as important as you might think,” he grumbled.
“I sense a little bitterness.”
“If it weren’t for the meetings-”
“Which you probably could have Zoomed,” you offered.
“Yes!” he reacted, with a frustrating chuckle, running a hand through his ever present, chocolate curls. “I shouldn’t have had to have left Toronto in the first place, and now I can’t even get back for Christmas. My flight was delayed, then delayed again, and finally cancelled.”
You understood his irritation. “My flight home to New York was cancelled as well. The storm is walloping the entire East Coast; my mom told me they’ve been getting at least an inch an hour since last night and the winds are vicious.”
“That’s what my sister was saying. Blizzard conditions. Travel not recommended. My whole family was supposed to be together this year. My parents have already rescheduled our Christmas Day celebration for Monday.”
“So then you may not miss anything after all," you tried reassuring him. "Hopefully you’ll be able to get on a flight before then. I think the storm is supposed to move on by morning.”
“I’ll confess, I’m a little less mad at Andrew now than I was twenty minutes ago. It’s so good to see you, Bug,” he murmured, eyes soft and smile tender.
///
There had always been a mutual attraction between you and Shawn, from the very first time you had met when he was nineteen, even though you had had a boyfriend at the time, and he had been infatuated with one of his best friends.
Your fascination with one another was strong enough that you flirted, shamelessly, whenever your paths crossed, even skirting the edge between teasing and cheating more than once. But neither of you were the type willing to cross that final line.
The closest you had ever come was when you found yourself working on the set of Shawn’s video for ‘Summer of Love’ in Mallorca in August of the year before. You spent all of your time together when you weren’t shooting, and it was even more carefree than what was portrayed on film.
It had been one of the best weeks of your life. He was easy to be around and to talk to, his bright smile rivaled the Spanish sun, and his laughter was quick to spark and wholly contagious. He was willing to try most anything and the adventures you embarked on off set were mostly auspicious, occasionally disastrous, but always spectacular.
The night before he was to leave, loose-lipped from drinking and mellow from smoking, Shawn had confided in you that he felt his two-year relationship with the best friend who had ultimately become so much more to him was reaching its end. He was having trouble accepting that the future he’d dreamt of with the girl he'd once felt was 'the one' was fading and he was feeling a little desperate about returning to the States.
You had wrapped your arms around him and hugged him close to try to comfort him. You told him that no matter what happened, it would be okay.
His sorrow was sharp after a week free of worries, and the cervezas he had chased your tequila shots with had his nose in the crook of your neck and his lips brushing against your pulse point just below the angle of your jaw. As desperately as you wanted to comfort him even more, so much more, you refused to be the catalyst by which his relationship indeed ended.
You had taken it upon yourself to remove the temptation, for both your sake, in the inexplicable chance of a lapse in judgment or morals. You had reluctantly eased away and cupped his face. You felt you knew Shawn well enough to trust he wouldn’t have taken it any further, but the way his eyes had shifted from yours to your lips, and again, had you smiling gently but shaking your head almost imperceptibly. You had grazed his lips with the pad of your thumb and kissed his cheek instead.
Three months later, he and his ex had broken up.
You had considered reaching out, but decided it was better to give him time to sort himself out, for his relationship had been serious and long lasting, and very public. To be honest, you had hoped he would contact you first. And he had, after the New Year, before tour began, but it was too late. You were freshly involved with someone; someone you were beginning to have honest feelings for.
It was disappointing, for you had always wondered what Shawn would’ve been like as a boyfriend, but the timing was off. The godforsaken timing had always been off for you two.
Shawn had had a little fling with someone the summer just passed. Not many people had been truly aware of it, but being ‘in the business’, and within your circle, you had heard about it.
It had bothered you more than you were willing to admit. You didn’t like thinking of him with someone new, even though everyone knew it wasn’t meant to last, even Shawn and the girl themselves. You knew it was ridiculous to think that way, and you were still in your relationship anyway, so what did it matter?
And then you and your ex separated, which had been four months ago, when you realized you weren’t as in love with him as you had tried to convince yourself you were. The fact that your breakup coincided with learning about Shawn’s dalliance was something you couldn’t escape.
After four years of an ebb and flow friendship, and maybe a little pining over what could’ve been, at least on your end, here you and Shawn were, finally single at the same moment, in the same place, during the most magical time of the year.
///
You decided to have lunch together and catch up.
Even after months of little contact, conversation and laughter flowed as if no time at all had passed since Mallorca. You didn’t even bat an eye when he stole bites of food from your plate; that’s how natural things had always been between you.
Lunch bled into a walk around LA, neither of you willing to end your reconnection too early. The festive decorations in every storefront window, strings of lights draped around every tree, the holly and garland twined around light posts, the displays in the park and throughout the outdoor market, it all screamed Christmas, but you and Shawn had both grown up in a much colder climate.
You found your arm wrapping around his bicep while you strolled throughout the city but he didn’t seem to mind in the slightest.
“Christmas doesn’t feel the same without a blanket of snow,” you sighed.
“There may not be snow, but there is ice skating.” He pointed to the outdoor rink in the near distance. “What do you say?”
You weren’t a strong skater, and it had been a while since you’d been on ice. “If you promise you won’t let me fall.”
“I will try my very best,” he declared. “Is that enough?”
“If I fall,” you warned, "I’m taking you down with me.”
“Acknowledged,” he laughed.
While you waited for your session time, you sat side by side on a bench, almost impossibly close, to help to keep you warm, Shawn rationalized, but there was a spirited glint in his eyes when he said so. Your hands were wrapped around cups of hot cocoa while you wondered together what your families were doing in your absence.
It was chilly so close to the ice, and you were thankful for Shawn’s body heat and the blanket he had rented along with your skates.
///
You started off slowly, gliding around the large evergreen in the center of the ice, Shawn close by your side, but giving you enough space so as not to throw off your balance. You were only slightly wobbly and as your confidence grew, so did your speed.
Shawn was skating circles around you, literally, and his antics had you giggling. The harder you laughed, the more unsteady you became, until you felt it coming before it actually did. Your legs began to slide out from beneath you and you were going to fall on your butt, embarrassingly so, but at the very last moment, Shawn was there, hands gripping you from behind, beneath your arms, to catch you and right you.
“I got you,” he whispered, lips ever so close to your ear.
Suddenly he was in front of you, instead of behind. His quick movement had you swaying again, and your hands shot out to grip his forearms. His hands were immediately on your hips to keep you steady. He was chuckling at the surprise on your face, while bringing your bodies closer. “You good?” he smirked.
“I’m good,” you confirmed, cheeks darkening from the pink of the chill and exertion to the red of having him so close to you.
Time stood still and simultaneously stretched before he finally withdrew his hands from your hips. You swore you could still feel the heat of his handprints. You then removed your hands from his arms, which was a mistake, as you weren’t as steady as thought you were.
In the following instant you screeched, “Not good!”, as you actually went down this time, pulling Shawn with you.
You both rumbled with laughter while flat on your backs, side by side on the ice, looking up at the pinks and purples of the sunsetting sky.
///
Walking away from the skating rink, Shawn casually reached for your hand and you responded by interlacing your fingers with his. There was a small shift in the energy between you then.
“I still have my rental,” you told him. “We shouldn’t have to spend Christmas alone. Why don’t you ditch your hotel and come over? We can drink eggnog and watch holiday movies. There’s a second bedroom you’re welcome to use.” It all came rushing out rather quickly, and you held your breath waiting for Shawn’s reply.
“I would love that,” he whispered, giving your hand an extra little squeeze. He smiled serenely when your eyes rose to his. “I should return to my hotel to grab my things then.”
“Why don’t you do that while I run one last errand. I can text you the address of the condo. Do you still have my number? It hasn’t changed.”
You hadn’t meant for your words to be anything more than an innocent question and statement, but it had triggered suppressed guilt in him.
“I thought about calling so many times,” he confessed, voice soft and apologetic.
“I would have liked hearing from you more often,” you said gently.
“You were...seeing someone. I was touring. When I wasn’t otherwise preoccupied, I was lonely. I didn’t want to come to rely on you to get me through the bad days.”
“You could have.” You squeezed his hand. “Friends are there for you, especially when you need them. I would have been there for you.”
“I know that. I do. I just didn’t want to mess anything up for you.”
His admission was perplexing. “What do you think you would have messed up?”
“That is a conversation best left for another time,” he hedged.
You didn’t want to press him for more. It would come to light soon enough; he wasn’t one to hold onto secrets. He was too honest not to share his thoughts with the one who his thoughts were about.
///
Shawn arrived at your place about an hour and a half later, not only bearing his luggage and guitar case, but he also had in hand a large bag from one of the best Chinese restaurants in LA.
“You are the best!” you squealed, taking the Chinese from him and placing it on the island in the kitchen.
He glanced around the condo as you showed him to the second bedroom where he could put his things. The rental itself was opulent, but there were fewer decorations than he had expected. Enough, but nowhere near enough. The biggest absence was a Christmas tree, which he immediately noticed.
“Where’s the tree??”
“There is no tree.”
He gasped and gaped, “We have to have a Christmas tree!”
“I wasn’t planning to still be in LA for Christmas,” you shrugged.
“We have to have a Christmas tree,” he insisted again.
“Where are we going to find a tree at seven o’clock on Christmas Eve?” you chuckled.
“There has to be a tree lot somewhere nearby.” He pulled out his phone to search ‘tree lots near me’. “Two miles north, but they’re only open for one more hour.”
“Well, let’s go then.”
His eyes lit up as if it was already Christmas morning. “Yeah?”
“They’re probably all sad-looking by now though.”
“Have a little holiday faith, Bug. We’ll find something.”
///
Stumbling back across the threshold of your condo, laughing, you and Shawn wrestled the tree inside.
Once you got it upright in the stand, you turned on the sound system and found a holiday playlist; you couldn’t trim the tree without Christmas music playing in the background. It was then that you both realized you had nothing to trim the tree with. A fresh round of laughter began; you couldn’t believe you had forgotten such a crucial detail.
It took until you were breathless and your sides ached to stop laughing. And then Shawn’s stomach growled and the giggles began again.
“Food first,” you snickered, “and then we’ll figure it out.”
You finally dug into the Chinese you had abandoned to make it to the tree lot before they had closed. Through happy murmurs, you and Shawn agreed that Chinese always seemed to taste better when it was cold.
///
After contacting the 24-hour management office, even on Christmas Eve, and explaining the predicament you were in, the wonderful, savior of an onsite building manager had shortly been knocking on your door with a cumbersome box of lights and ornaments tottering in her arms.
Shawn had quickly taken it from her with heartfelt appreciation.
She had apologized that it was a mess and she wasn’t sure how much you would be able to use, or if any of the lights actually worked, but it was more than you had had an hour earlier and you were eternally grateful.
Your once sad little tree, now trimmed with stings of white lights, which had seemed to take forever to untangle, and colorful, mismatched ornaments, was now utterly charming, and you stood back to admire it.
You felt Shawn’s arms wrap around you from behind and you reflexively relaxed against him. “It’s perfect,” he exhaled.
“It really is,” you breathed.
You were creating new holiday traditions together, which you recognized might be too bold a thought, but you couldn’t help yourself from wondering if he would be around to do it all again with next year. Maybe in New York or Toronto instead of Los Angeles.
///
Just past midnight, relaxed from the rum-laced eggnog, curled up together on the overstuffed sectional, blanket thrown over your legs, Shawn’s gaze fell on the glowing Christmas tree and he sighed. “I miss being with my family, but if I can’t be with them, I’m happy to be here with you.”
“Today was the best gift I could’ve asked for. Thank you for spending this unconventional Christmas with me.” You rested your head on his shoulder and he dropped a kiss to its crown.
///
You were up before Shawn Christmas morning. His nose carried him to the kitchen where he found you transferring hot waffles from the waffle maker to plates and setting them on the kitchen island beside a container of whipped cream, a small bowl of red and green sprinkles, and shakers of colored sugars.
You were pulling a pan of bacon from the oven when you heard Shawn sing, “Merry Christmas, Ladybug!” You spun toward him with a ‘merry Christmas’ on your own lips, but your voice escaped you and you almost lost your grip on the baking sheet when you saw him.
He was crossing the kitchen toward the coffee maker in pajama pants, barefoot and bare chested.
You knew you were suddenly flushed, there was an insanely attractive, beautifully built, half-naked man in your kitchen after all, but you tried to (ineffectively) neutralize your expression.
Glancing over his shoulder he asked, a lilt of playfulness in his tone, “Everything okay?” He poured coffee into two mugs and fixed yours just the way you liked it.
You quietly cleared your throat. “Fine.”
“What are you wearing?” he chuckled when he finally noticed the snowmen head bopper on your head.
“What are you not wearing?” you snickered. “You could have put on a shirt, you know.”
“What?” he smirked, handing you your mug. “I run hot when I sleep. At least I put on pants.”
“Thank you for that visual,” you mumbled, trying to mask your desire with sarcasm, and took a cautious sip of your coffee.
“You’re welcome,” he grinned.
“You remembered how I like my coffee,” you whispered, wonderstruck.
“I remember a lot of things about you, Bug,” he murmured, cheeks pinking, as he slid onto one of the kitchen stools.
Next to his plate of waffles was another Christmas headband, one with candy canes sticking up like antlers. “Really?” he laughed.
All you had to do was look at him a certain way and he was putting it on. “Happy?”
“Very,” you smirked.
With the way he smiled at you then, you had to forcibly stop yourself from leaning across the island and kissing him.
///
You had just finished eating breakfast when almost simultaneously you and Shawn received messages on your phones from Delta. Airports across the East Coast had opened and departures were going out again.
“It’s a Christmas miracle!” you giggled.
Shawn was just as giddy to get home. He was scheduled for a flight to Toronto within an hour of your flight to New York. You had three hours before you needed to check in at LAX.
All at once you were aflutter with activity. Shawn asked what needed to be done before you left the rental and together you put everything you were responsible for in order. You knew the property owner would be over to inspect the condo within a few days, and you left a note about the tree and a check to cover the cost of its removal, and then some.
You were both still largely packed, so it didn’t take long to get dressed and to finish stuffing your suitcases with your last-minute items.
With one last fond look at your tree, you closed the condo door behind you.
///
Before you knew it, you were checking your baggage and receiving your boarding passes. After buying snacks for your flights, you and Shawn sat together between your gates to wait for boarding for Toronto. Your flight would follow his by roughly forty minutes.
It seemed like there was something more on Shawn’s mind as he stroked the fingers of your hand that had found itself under his.
“What happens next?” you wondered, hoping it would shake his thoughts from his mind to his mouth.
“Call me when you get home?” he asked.
“Of course.”
“I meant it when I said it was good to see you again,” he murmured. “And spending the past twenty-four hours together has made me realize just how much I’ve missed you. And maybe...” His voice trailed off.
“Maybe...?” you nudged.
He sighed wistfully. “Just...an open-ended maybe.”
It sounded hopeful, as if you might be on the verge of something more, and your heart fluttered. You wanted him to know that you wanted more if he wanted more but how did you say so without saying so?
“The next time you think about calling, anytime you think about calling,” you said, “promise me you will.”
“I promise.”
“I want you back in my life, bub. Not just a few texts or a brief conversation every other month. And I want to have lunch every time you find yourself in New York.”
“Every time? Ugh,” he teased.
You gave him a playful shove.
“I’m in New York a lot,” he threatened playfully.
“Every time,” you repeated.
He smiled tenderly and kissed your cheek. “I promise.”
It was then when the announcement sounded for pre-boarding for Toronto and you sighed heavily. You were going to miss him. You were reassured you would see each other again soon, but in the meantime you were going to miss him.
You walked him to his gate and hugged your goodbyes. You waved as he approached the entrance of the jetway. The moment he was out of sight you started walking in the direction of your own gate.
Suddenly you heard an earnest shout of, “Ladybug!”
You paused and turned back to see Shawn running toward you.
When he stood before you, you asked, bemused, “Did you forget something?”
“Yes,” he rasped.
“What?”
“This.” His hand reached up between you and, cupping your face, his thumb on the pulse point of your neck and his fingers slipping to your nape, he brought your lips to his.
Instinctively your arms slid around his waist. His kiss was soft and unhurried and more perfect than you ever could have imagined. You lit up from the inside out as he took your upper lip between his. And when you responded by sucking gently on his lower lip, his hum turned into a purr and he dropped his carry on to grip your hip and draw your bodies closer.
When you finally separated, you were slightly breathless, mouths painted with mirrored dreamlike smiles.
Shawn brushed the tip of his nose against yours and asked, “What are you doing for New Year’s?”

The Shell of a Girl that I Used to Know Well
Inspired by "Love of three" by @misashabunbun
Thank you @thestressmademedoit and @maleive07 for helping me find the fic.
So this turned out to be longer than I thought it would be (probably because I based it around like 5 songs) so I'll break it into parts and post each part separately. Oh and did I mention this is songfic? Because it's a songfic! No Felix yet, but you guys do see Peter but I surprise surprise I turned this into an OT4 pairing. Anyone wanna guess who the other lucky person is to date Mari, Peter and Felix? Also bonus points for anyone who can figure out Mari's stage name.
The song in this part in Stitches by Shawn Mendes and The Lonely by Christina Perri is where I got this parts title from. Also the song mentioned at the end is Partners in Crime by Set It Off ft Ashley Costello.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng was grateful for the quiet she found in what she was pretty sure was some kind of presentation room. There was a raised platform which she believes is supposed to be some kind of stage and a couple of tables with chairs surrounding them. She still has no idea how she got here, she was just trying to find some peace. She knew her pseudo Uncle and her friends meant well but they were suffocating her. It's been over a week since she left that bastard, not likely that he even noticed. Since Marinette has gotten to Stark Towers everyone has been treating her like she's about to break and she can't stand it. Yes she's hurt, but like give her a chance to fall apart before trying to shove her back together again! Marinette took a deep breath to calm herself as she sat on the little stage to work on the embroidery she was putting on the back of the blouse. She already had a full heart there but it was kind of plain. She wanted to add something but she didn't know what.
She sighed softly. At times she really missed Tikki being around to be her second opinion.
Ever since the defeat of Hawkmoth the kwamis asked to be renounced and to have their respective jewelry return the Miraculous box. They were working together to heal poor Nooroo and Dusuu. Even though Marinette had been able to fully fix the peacock Miraculous, as well as heal Emilie Agreste and Nathalie Sancour from the effects of using a broken Miraculous, the two kwamis had to deal with a significant amount of emotional trauma from the whole affair.
Even though the final battle had been won quietly without casualties it had taken a lot out of everyone who had been a part of it. Adrien's relationship with his father has been very strained to say the least. Even though Gabriel is doing his best to right his wrongs, it goes to say that the only reason Adrien even speaks to his father at all is because of his mother who is desperately trying to make up for years lost between the two of them.
While Marinette was trying to think of an idea for her embroidery she started humming a song she had heard recently on the radio. In her eyes it fit her past relationship with Damian Wayne perfectly. Soon enough she was singing softly.
I thought that I've been hurt before
But no one has ever left me quite this sore.
Even on their worst days Lila's lies, Alya's beratings, hell even Mlle. Bustier's looks of disappointment never hurt half as much as Damian's total disinterest did. She had cooked him a nice romantic dinner yet he barely acknowledged her. More interested in whatever, or should she say whoever, was on his phone. After 5 mins of trying to carry the conversation alone Marinette sighed and just decided to eat the meal she worked so hard on. After 10 mins of stiff silence in their shared apartment, only filled with the sounds of Marinette eating and Damian texting, the latter got up. Grabbing his coat he made his way to the door, barely turning his head towards his fiancee to call out "I've got to go. Something came up at work."
Marinette wasn't even shocked anymore, just resigned. Still she tried to reason with the man she no longer recognized. Sometimes she wonders if she ever truly knew him at all. "You just got here. Isn't there someone else who can handle it? You haven't even touched your dinner."
True to her words, the young heir's meal sat completely untouched, quickly cooling in the AC.
"Mari, you know these things are important. Not just anyone can handle them." Damian's words were patronizing at best. It frustrated the young designer, but she didn't let it show.
"Will you be back tonight?" She knew the answer but she asked anyway.
Damian hummed noncommittally as he walked through the door still looking at his phone and not the beautiful young lady in front of him. "Most likely not. Don't wait up for me." He quickly walked out, closing the door behind him. Marinette quickly placed her ear to the door as he walked away from the humble abode. She could hear him on the phone.
"Yeah. I'm on my way, gorgeous. I just left." Silence. "No, she doesn't suspect a thing." Nothing but his footsteps as he continues to leave unknowing of her distress behind the apartment "Perfect. The less you're wearing, the better."
Marinette crumbled to the floor after she could no longer hear him. She had suspected as much but that didn't make hearing it less painful.
Your words cut deeper than a knife
Now I need someone to breathe me back to life
She remembers the first time he truly yelled at her. The way he looked at her with disgust. The way she flinched away from his imposing figure and his cutting words. If tried hard enough she could delude herself that he was doing this out of her best interest. The illusion made even easier to believe by the way he apologized and hugged her after he stopped yelling. The way he told her he was worried about her going out and being made a target to Rogues because of her connection to him. The way he feared that he disguises wouldn't be enough even though he himself didn't recognize her at first when she walked back through the apartment door the day. She believed she was safer staying in the apartment because he said so and he only wants what's best for her. So eventually the walls of their apartment was all she saw 24/7. For her safety of course.
Got feeling that I'm going under
But I know I will make it out alive
If quit calling you my lover
And move on
Marinette's head was spinning. Or was it the room? Was she even breathing? She couldn't focus on any of that. All she could focus on was the picture sitting on the screen on her phone. The phone Damian had bought her. The idea made her feel sick now because all those gifts he was giving her now seemed to have double meanings. Especially when the picture filling her screen was of a naked Lila whose body was hidden behind a sheet lying on Damian's bare chest while he slept. She didn't even think to process how the lying bitch managed to get her number. Instead all she could focus on was tears streaming down her face as she felt her heart shatter. She didn't even process the fact that she left the phone right there with the picture still on the screen and started packing her stuff. She grabbed everything that was hers that she bought herself, later on she'd be surprised at how little that was. She stuffed her things in a small suitcase, put the miracle box in a duffle bag wrapped in her leftover fabric from commissions, grabbed her purse with her wallet and left. After locking the apartment door she slid the key underneath the door so he could have it back. He could have everything back he ever gave her. She was done. She was so distressed she didn't even notice that she had put on the one disguise she had and taken a train to New York until she was standing in the lobby of Stark Tower with her Uncle Tony and her Aunt Pepper holding her while she sobbed.
You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
I'm shaking, falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Marinette was so engrossed in the lyrics, in her feelings, that she didn't notice the tears falling from her eyes, nor the way she was furiously embroidering the shirt in her hands. And she definitely didn't notice that she had gained an audience.
Just like a moth drawn to a flame
Yeah you lured me in and I couldn't sense the pain
The first time she met Damian it had been an accident. She knew when her classes started she wouldn't have the time to get the fabrics she needed for her last commissions that she agreed to before going on hiatus. She knew juggling her business and school would be hard so told her clients she'd be on break for the unforeseeable future. She was so focused on her phone trying to make sure her list was complete, that she didn't notice the man right in front of her.
"Oh!" She fell back with a little yelp and when she saw what, or who, she ran into she hurried to help them up as well. "I'm so sorry monsieur. Are you okay?"
The man yanked his hand away from her and growled, "You wouldn't be having to ask if you weren't caught up in whatever idiotic nonsense is on your phone."
Marinette fumed silently. "Well excuse me sir, I don't know who you think you are, but that is uncalled for. I apologized and helped you up. All you had to do was walk away. No need to be so rude."
Damian raised an eyebrow at her curiously. "You don't know who I am?"
Marinette crossed her arms still annoyed. "Am I supposed to? You could be the president for all I cared and I still would say you were being rude and disrespectful."
Damian's expression changed slightly to a bit of amused intrigue. "I apologize. I thought you were another fangirl with some kind of ruse to get my attention. If you don't mind me asking, what is a girl like you doing in a city like Gotham? I can tell from your accent you are not from here."
Marinette relaxed a little bit. "I'm here going to college when the semester starts, but right now I was out doing some shopping."
"Perhaps I could join you as a way to apologize for my rude behavior. I could give you a mini tour along the way." Damian smiled softly at her.
"I don't know," apprehension was clear on Marinette's face. "I don't even know you let alone your name."
Damian chuckled lightly. "I assure you, even if you don't know me, the rest of the city does. I won't be able to get away with doing anything to you without being plastered across every newspaper and magazine in town, Angel. But my name is Damian by the way. Damian Wayne." He grabbed her hand and kissed it softly after his introduction.
"A-angel?" Marinette stuttered as she blushed.
"Well, I still don't know your name."
Marinette smiled before introducing herself. "My name is Marinette. Your company would be much appreciated, Damian"
Your bitter heart cold to the touch
Now I'm going to reap what I sow
I'm left seeing red on my own
Sometimes on nights like these Marinette wondered what she did wrong. Because it had to be her of course. Why else would Damian go from her caring, charming, wonderful, Dove to Gotham's very own cold, unfeeling, ruthless, Ice Prince.
"Hi, Damian. You're home early." Marinette tried not to let the hope seep into her voice. She had a feeling she wasn't successful.
Damian barely grunted at her as he continued to their room. "My idiots brothers dragged me into spending some time with them so I'm forced to change into something less formal."
"Oh okay." She knew she did an even worse job of hiding her disappointment. "You know I finished Uncle Jagged's outfit the other day. He loved it."
Damian hummed noncommittally. She knew he wasn't paying attention, he never was but she kept trying.
"You know how he's doing that "World's Greatest" Tour. Celebrating the hero's of the world in their respective cities. Luka's been opening for him. His career has really taken off. Hell I'm sure half the tickets Uncle Jagged sells are people just trying to see Luka. He'll have to tour solo soon."
"I bet." Damian's voice was muffled from being the closet, but she could still hear the disinterest in his voice.
She sighed as she leaned against the doorframe of "their" room. It was only theirs in name the fact that his clothes were there. She spent almost every night there alone. She took a deep breath trying to gather her courage for what she was going to ask. "Well they wanted to thank me for the outfits. Claimed the tour would have been half as successful without them. They invited me to take me out to dinner tonight to catch up, then for me to hang out backstage during their show. They said they missed me." Marinette hoped he still wasn't paying attention, but as soon as he settled his famous glare on her, she knew she wasn't that lucky. She flinched into herself under his gaze.
"Marinette. You know what would happen if you left this apartment. The famous Wayne Heir's sweet vulnerable fiance. The one never seen in the media anymore. You would get off this block before your picture would be on every media outlet in the city. Then you would be the Rogues target for the night. They would go anywhere you would be. Including the concert. Would you really be so selfish to endanger hundreds, possibly thousands of innocent concert goers just to 'hang out' with people you can see any time you please?" The disappointment on his face and the coldness of his delivery had her feeling ashamed. She hung her head low trying to hold back the tears.
"I'm sorry." She knew her voice was barely above whisper, but if she tried to speak any louder she knew she'd open the flood gatesp.
Damian brushed past her. "You should be. I'll be heading to the concert with my brothers. I'll inform Jagged of your apologies for not coming."
"Just telling him I'm sick." She offered weakly still not looking up from the floor.
She could feel his judgeful look on her. "Of course not. He'll insist on coming to check on you then he'll see your lying. I'll tell him you're busy with commissions." He left her standing there as headed to leave again. She heard his phone ring and he answered it harshly. "I'm coming down, Todd!" "Of course not, you imbecile! She's a serious designer who can't be bothered out of her schedule to spend time with my idiotic brothers, especially when she's up to her nose in commissions!" She heard the door shut after that statement. I guess her soon to be brothers in law didn't know the real reason behind her lock down either. She stood there for a few more moments before she broke down into loud heavy sobs. She collapsed to her knees and just cried. Not for the first nor last time in that prison she called an apartment.
Got feeling that I'm going under
But I know I will make it out alive
If quit calling you my lover
And move on
You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
I'm shaking, falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Needle and the thread
Gotta get you out my head
Her hands were moving furiously as she was trying to rid her mind of her cruel ex.
Needle and the thread
Gonna wind up dead
She wanted to forget everything about him.
Needle and the thread
Gotta get you out my head
His smile, his laugh, the loving look in his eyes.
Needle and the thread
Gonna wind up dead
His kisses, his hugs, the way he held her like he was afraid of losing her
Needle and the thread
Gotta get you out my head
His scowl, his glare, his need to hide her from the world
Needle and the thread
Gonna wind up dead
His distance, his apathy, the way he was happy in any other girl's arms but her's
Needle and the thread
Gotta get you out my head
Get you out of my head.
She wanted to forget loving him and hating him. She wanted her happiness back
You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
Shaking, falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
And now that I'm without you kisses
I'll be needing stitches
I'll be needing stitches.
As she finished singing she awoke from her haze. She felt the tears on her face and wiped them away before looking to see what she had made. The simple heart from before now had a jagged line down the middle that stopped a quarter of the way to the bottom to represent a break. From the bottom it looked like the heart was dripping. The most noticeable change was the crude yet tasteful stitches that laid over the break in the heart. They weren't neat as if she were suggesting they were professionally done. The way she laid them subconsciously represented as if they were self done by someone trying their best.
While she was studying her impromptu embroidery a voice surprised her. "It looks nice."
She looked up in shock to see a brown haired boy around her age, 21 maybe 22, sitting at the table closest to the stage she was on. He looked as if he had been there for a while.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I heard you singing so I came to see who it was because you have a beautiful voice, but then I saw you crying and I wanted to make sure you were okay, but you seem really focused and I didn't want to interrupt, but I didn't want to just leave you either, but- I'm sorry I'm rambling. My name is Peter. Are you okay?" The boy, Peter, asked her softly, looking concerned. For Marinette it was enough.
She had sat in the chair next to him and finally let out everything she was holding in. The tears were flowing freely now "I don't know. I'm so mad, so hurt, so confused. Where did it go wrong? One minute I'm getting my business degree at Gotham University, the next I'm in a relationship with Damian Wayne. It was amazing he was so kind and sweet and loving and he made me so happy. Then next thing I know after dating for about a year and half he proposes. I'm on cloud 9 and I say yes and I'm so excited for what's to come, but suddenly everything changes. Next thing I know he's saying I can't leave the apartment because he wants me to be safe from the Rogues and I accepted it. Then he's yelling at me for trying to sneak out and I'm thinking I deserve it. I should have just stayed home and he's already apologizing for yelling. Then suddenly he's gone more and more. He's never home and I'm alone and it hurts. Then suddenly I'm selfish for asking to go out to see my friends because how can I put everyone at risk just to go see some friends who I can see anytime I want. Yet nobody is ever allowed over. But I still believe he's right. How can I be So now I'm alone and miserable and it hurts because he keeps getting further and further from me and I'm starting to suspect what's going on but I'm too scared to ask him because if he confirms it, then everything I believed in is a lie and I couldn't live with that. But I didn't even have to ask because soon someone is sending me a picture and it's the girl who made my school life hell by taking everyone I thought was my friend away from me with a few far fetched lies, and here she is laying naked on my fiance's naked chest as he sleeps. And I know he knows who she is and what she did to me because I told him. Yet he doesn't care because here he is fucking her while I'm at home all the time because he told me to be. So I grabbed my stuff and left everything he ever got me and just left. So here I am miserable staying with my Uncle Tony trying not to think about the asshole while my friends try to help me feel better yet I feel terrible because I loved the jerk and I still kinda do and I still have the engagement ring which I should pawn, but it was Bruce's mom's ring and that would be wrong and Bruce would be devastated. Why do I care so much about him and his family when he couldn't be bothered with me?" She felt better after finally letting it all out. She hadn't cried since she came to Uncle Tony. Not when Adrien arrived with Kagami, Marc, and Nathaniel, not when Luka arrived with Uncle Jagged and not even when Chole and Alix arrived. All her friends and pseudo family were there yet she hadn't cried once, nor had she actually told them the full story. But here this stranger asked if she was okay and she let it flow like Niagara Falls.
If Peter was shocked by her rant he didn't let it show. Instead he placed a hand on her before speaking softly "Because you are an amazing person who is a million times better than him. He is insane to choose anyone over you especially someone so foul as a desperate liar. I just met you, but I can already tell that you are a kind hearted, talented girl and anyone would be lucky to have you in their lives and I can tell by the crowd over there by the door that you have many people standing with you who already figured that out." Marinette looked up at his words to see her friends and pseudo uncles and their respective wives standing in the door.
"Hi guys." As soon as Marinette finished speaking they all rushed towards her. Adrien reached her first pulling her into a tight hug.
"Oh bugaboo, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Are you okay? Why didn't you tell us, princess?" He buried his face in her neck purring slightly in a way that calmed her.
"I guess I was still processing everything kitty. He really had me thinking he loved me and to find out he didn't was a hard blow." She confessed quietly.
"He'll meet my blade for hurting you, Mari," Kagami seemed to have Chole, Alix and surprisingly, Marc ready to back her.
"No, Gami, I just want to get over him. He's not worth it." Mari remarked sadly before smiling at her friends. "But thank you, all of you, for having my back."
There were various "Of course" and "Always" that were heard among the group before Tony Stark cleared his throat. "Marinette let me properly introduce Peter Parker, my intern. Peter, this is my niece Marinette Dupain-Cheng also known as MDC owner and head designer of Miracle Designs."
Peter looked star struck. "I love your work. You make the coolest clothes on the planet."
Marinette blushed lightly. "Thank you, Peter. Uncle Tony told me much about you and I was always impressed. You're nothing short of a genius." Marinette missed Peter's blush as she started introducing her friends to him, but Tony didn't.
"This is Adrien Agreste, former model and Physics major. This is Kagami Tsurugi, world champion fencer. This is Luka Couffanie, singer songwriter signed under Jagged Stone. They're dating. This is Nathaniel Kurtzberg and Marc Anciel creators of Miraculous Tales comic. They're engaged. This is Chole Bourgeois, the best lawyer in all of France and probably Europe. And this is Alix Kubdel, X Games Winner, and famous archeologists. These two are also engaged. I'm sure you know Jagged Stone and his manager and also his wife, Penny."
"You guys are amazing! None of you look much older than me yet you're already so successful! What is in the water in Paris? Some kind of talent steroids?" Peter was amazed.
"Speaking of talent," Luka turned towards Marinette. "Melody why didn't you tell me you could sing like that?" Soon everyone was agreeing that she was an excellent singer.
Marinette was bright red. "It's no big deal guys. I was just singing to myself, I wasn't expecting an audience."
Jagged took his chance to pull his pseudo niece into a hug. "Nettie, my girl you have got to let me sign you. It would be so rocking to have talent like yours produced under my label!"
"No way Uncle Jagged! I'm not even that good!" Marinette began protesting before Luka put a hand on her shoulder.
"How about this? I need some vocals for a song I wrote and no matter how much I love them, my dear boyfriend and girlfriend can not sing." Adrien and Kagami looked at each other before shrugging. No point denying it. "How about you feature in my new single under an alias and if it's hit you'll give an album a try?"
Marinette looked around at some of the most important people in the world to her before sighing and agreeing.
"Alright. But no promises that this will be hit. I'm really not that good. You guys are just biased."
Alix ruffled Marinette's hair. "Whatever you say, DC. Now let's go play some UMS3!"
As everyone was heading out to find a room large enough for all of them Peter prepared to go back to work on a project until Marinette turned back to him with a huge smile and bright eyes. "Come on Peter! Come play with us."
How could he say no to that? So he came along.
A couple weeks later Luka's single "Partners in Crime" featuring Neon Titanium hit number one on the charts. And the most searched inquiry on Google for 3 days following was "who is Neon Titanium?" Needless to say Marinette was busy for the next couple months. Especially after Luka dropped a music video which she starred in as well wear a full face mask to stay hidden.

Will flinches away from Hannibal during an argument (angst & hurt/comfort)
(I LOVED the other request you wrote!!)
Sorry this took so long to get out, it ended up quite a bit longer then I originally intended but I hope you like it ! Also thank you so much <3
The first couple months after the fall had been rough, physically, having to go into hiding while their bodies were on mend. Hannibal's wounds, gruesome as they were, healed relatively quickly and without much fuss. Will on the other hand, had almost died. He had taken a stab to the shoulder, which shouldn’t have been the problem that it was, except that it got infected. He was stuck on the brink of death for quite a long time, and then spent the month after he was stabilized in and out of consciousness, high on painkillers. Hannibal had always been good at working and functioning under pressure, which was good because if he hadn’t been they probably would have died. The first time Will had come to full consciousness, however, Hannibal was a wreck. He’d cried then. Not a soft trickle of a few tears, but gut-wrenching sobs full of shaking shoulders and an ocean full of tears. Will cherished that memory, as he did with every memory of Hannibal crying. They made him human, seem more touchable. The first time he had cried in front of Will, they had been standing on the cliff right before they fell, and the next time was when Will had first woken up. He cried when Will spoke for the first time too, so long after the fall. The first time they made love, Will’s neck was wet with his tears. When Will said “I love you” the first time.
Will never took Hannibal as someone who cried very often, and he never had been. That was until the fall, until Will. The fall had been a rebirth for both of them, it didn’t only symbolize Will’s becoming. And then Will had gotten sick and Hannibal had almost lost him, and Hannibal was again reminded how precious life really is, and how easy it would be to lose him. They both made it through, but all the walls and forts between them had crumbled, and they were left exposed to each other. There wasn’t any reasoning or any point in trying to put them back up, because by then their souls were permanently intertwined. Will could read him no matter what anyways, so things like silence and shouting were equally expressive. Hannibal still didn’t cry a lot by any means, but he did cry (genuinely, cry) now on occasion, whereas he hadn’t really ever before.
They didn’t fight much. Of course they got on each other's nerves at times and had tendencies to snap at one another when they were irritated, but actual full blow fighting and arguing was extremely rare.
Today wasn’t like that though.
It was about two years after the fall, and they had finally settled down in Lakonia, an administrative region of Greece that’s in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. They’d eventually been officially declared dead, and the last year and a half had been good. Both were more than content to let the past mostly stay where it was and move forward, and their days blended together in a mix of hunting and domesticity. They’ve been happy, but they out of anyone should know how easily the calm can be shattered.
It started like it had before. Sleepwalking, gradual hallucinations, losing small bits of time. Will knew what it was, but he avoided telling Hannibal about it. He supposes he was scared, scared to lose the peaceful (peaceful in their own way) domesticity they had settled into. Scared of how it would affect their relationship. Hannibal had changed a lot since the fall and since his time in prison, and Will knew logically he didn’t need to worry. But the nightmares were full of flashbacks to ticking lights and needles, and he grew more and more distant, and Hannibal’s concerned eyes followed him everywhere.
It shouldn’t have taken him as long as it had to realize it, so when he finally did Hannibal was disgusted with himself. Will had been deliberately hiding it from him, but still, he felt he should’ve noticed sooner. Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis was known to be recurrent. It was extremely important that Will got treatment as soon as possible, especially since he had gone so long without it last time. The only option Hannibal had was to confront him.
That all led up to now. Their first real fight since the fall.
“Your health is of the utmost importance Will, you cannot be keeping things like this from me.” Frustration leaking into his tone, Hannibal leaned against the kitchen counter. Will was sitting across from him on a barstool, nursing a glass of whiskey. Will was annoyed, he knew he shouldn't be annoyed but he was. He knew Hannibal was just concerned, but it felt overwhelming, and he couldn’t help but wonder how genuine the concern was. The past couple of weeks he found himself falling back into old thinking patterns, reminiscing about the past. He knew the Hannibal in front of him was completely different then the Hannibal he had first met, but he couldn’t help but to compare his abundance of concern now to the great lack of care he had before.
He grimaced, “Well I don’t need you freaking out. I can take care of myself, always have.”
“For the most part, yes, you can. But you aren’t doing a good show it right now, Encephalitis is life threatening if left untreated, you are aware of that. You cannot just ignore it.” Hannibal’s usual calm façade was slowly slipping. “With everything you've been through, you’re honestly willing to die by a treatable disease? You’re not stupid, Will.”
Taking another drink of his whiskey, he rolled his eyes. The alcohol was making his thoughts fuzzy, but goddamnit was he too sober for this.
“I wasn’t going to let it go on forever Hannibal, you’re right, I’m not that fucking stupid. You’re just overreacting and being dramatic, like always.” He raised his glass to take another drink only to have it roughly pulled from his grasp.
Looking up, he glared at the man across from him. “What the fuck Hannibal?”
Hannibal's calm was practically nonexistent at this point, and he slammed the glass down on the other side of the counter before looking back at Will. “Are you so insistent on being self destructive? You’re acting like a child Will, refusing help.”
Will let out a loud, overexaggerated sigh. His voice was rough when he spoke, the tone of it slowly rising. “Well what am I supposed to do? It’s not like I can just walk into a hospital and ask them to help me treat a rare disease that I’m known for having had before. Maybe I’ve just been trying to figure out what to do, I’m not completely incompetent you know.”
Hannibal’s clenched fists rested on the counter. “You could ask for help! We could get the right supplies and treat you, without needing to go to the hospital. You know that, you are just being unnecessarily difficult.”
Will stood, the stool pushed behind him as he glared at Hannibal. “Yeah well maybe I don’t want your help, you don’t exactly have the best track record of making good medical decisions for me.”
Hannibal’s next words came out in a raised voice, not exactly a yell, but they seemed to take up all the air from the room. “I am not going to stay here and watch you kill yourself. I’d thought better of you Will, but if that’s how you chose to act I am not going to stay here for it.”
And Will flinched.
The small, unconscious action sent Hannibal reeling, as he looked back over what he had just said. He didn’t think of himself as an impulsive person, he didn’t think he was the kind of person who said things they didn’t mean out of anger, but Will seemed to bring that out in him. He and Will were so far beyond lies and manipulation, they were rarely things that were worried about within their current relationship. But watching Will so blatantly refuse to take care of himself, putting himself in danger by refusing help, was unbearable. So he threw out the first thing he thought of to get Will’s attention, for him to realize just how serious he was. He’d never leave him, they’d consummated their marriage in the depths of the ocean, and an infinite amount of times over since then.
It took him a minute to grasp what he had even said as he stared at Will across the kitchen. It was such a preposterous thing to think, let alone say that it took him a moment to understand the words had actually come out of his mouth. Will had frozen up, and Hannibal could almost see the walls being thrown up and forts being built, and it sent a pang of icy dread through his heart.
“I’m not refusing treatment, I just needed time to get used to the idea of you helping me, since you’re the reason I almost died last time. And here I was feeling bad because I was thinking you’re not like that anymore.” Will wasn’t glaring at him anymore, but his body language was rigid and the words he spoke were flat. “If you’re going to leave, just leave Hannibal, you don't need to find excuses to. You can cut the act.”
“Will.. “ The words seemed stuck in his throat as he said them. “I didn’t mean that.”
‘No, just go. If you think so low of me then just leave. Don’t want you feeling obligated to take care of me, since ya know, I obviously can’t take care of myself.” And with that, Will turned to leave, grabbing his keys and starting to put on his coat. He wasn’t full on drunk, but tipsy enough that he swayed slightly when he walked.
“Will, you don’t have to go.” Hannibal grabbed his arm gently, turning him to look at him. “You’re too intoxicated to drive right now.”
Will shook his head and roughly pulled his arm away. He needed to be alone and it irritated him that Hannibal was telling him what to do, but he had to accept his logic. And driving after he'd been drinking wouldn't fare well in the argument that he could take care of himself. “Fine, then you can get the fuck out.”
“Will…” Hannibal’s voice was soft, “I didn’t mean it.”
“I don’t care, just get out. At the very least just give me some space.”
Hannibal didn’t want Will to feel more pushed, but he had to add, “alright, but don’t drink anymore. It will worsen your condition. Please, Will.”
Will sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. “Yeah, whatever. Just go.”
Hannibal nodded and stepped away, he got his own coat and pulled the front door open. Hesitating, he turned back and looked at Will, who was staring at the floor. “Please be safe.” Will just waved his arm indicating that he should go, and with that, Hannibal stepped out onto the porch and then closed the door.
Will was exhausted, his head was throbbing and his eyes stung. With Hannibal gone, the tears finally began to steadily fall from his eyes. After a while of standing there, staring at the front door, he ended up stripping down to his boxers and laying down in their bed. Penelope, their little King Charles Spaniel puppy, watched him from the doorway. A few minutes later, she was picked up and snuggled in Will’s arms on the bed. Hannibal hadn’t wanted a dog, but he accepted that living with Will meant they were bound to get one. He tried to be apathetic towards her when Will first brought her home, a scrawny little stay, but the affection in his eyes was unmistakable. The little dog followed him everywhere now, and they ended up bonding very quickly. Will had even joked that Hannibal liked Penelope more than him. As he held her and pressed his face against her fur, Will thought back on those memories fondly.
His mind palace was nowhere near as vast or intricate as Hannibal’s, but he still had memories there that he clung to. Closing his eyes, Will went back to the ones he cherished the most.
The tears that had clung to Hannibal’s lashes, barely visible in the dark of the night after they killed the dragon.
The sobs that came from Hannibal’s lips when Will had first woken up.
The few drops that fell from his eyes when Will had spoken to him for the first time in his recovery.
The little gasps of breath that had accompanied the multitude of fallen tears that came the first time they made love (calling it anything else wouldn’t encompass it enough).
When Will had said “I love you” to him the first time and silent rivers had run down his cheeks as he’d smiled so vibrantly it was hard to look at.
He knew Hannibal hadn’t meant it, that he was just frustrated and fed up and worried. They wouldn’t survive separation, and Hannibal needed Will just as much as Will needed Hannibal, they needed each other to live. He knew Hannibal loved him, his love was as real and tangible as those tears he’d cried.
Will loved their lives, and he didn’t want anything to cause a rift in that. He trusted Hannibal and he knew he would take care of him and help him to the best of his abilities. But to see his concern in comparison to the first time he got sick, was jarring, and Will almost didn’t know how to handle it. Hannibal had turned himself in and spent three years in jail for Will, and he was sure if he decided he wanted to go to the hospital to get treated, even if it risked exposing them, Hannibal would take him in a heartbeat. It shouldn’t be, but the depth of Hannibal’s affection for him was still surprising at times.
Will acknowledged that being worried about Hannibal’s reactions to him being sick was justified, and that there would probably always be times where the trust between them wavered because of the past, but he knew Hannibal wouldn’t ever leave.
He’d call Hannibal in the morning he decided, give them both time to calm down. And with that last thought, he tried to sleep for the night.
When the sun came up, Will was thankful. He’d spent the night tossing and turning, fighting off nightmares when he did manage to sleep. More than once he found himself reaching out to the other side of the bed for Hannibal, only to find that he wasn't there. Getting up, Will put on a simple plain shirt and pair of sweatpants and went to make coffee. Their coffee maker had been outrageously expensive, but Hannibal had insisted on it, and it ended up being worth it. Now, looking at the stupidly expensive coffee maker brought Will a strong feeling of longing. Hannibal had only been gone a night and Will felt like he was already falling apart. Calling Penelope to come with him, Will picked up his phone and decided to sit on the porch to call Hannibal, deciding that the fresh air would do him some good. He wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but he just needed him back.
Will wasn’t someone who was very jumpy at all, but when he opened the front door and turned to see Hannibal sitting with his back against the house, Will startled so badly he almost dropped his phone.
Hannibal turned at the sound of the door opening and looked up at Will with puffy eyes and red cheeks dried with tears. Internally, Will sighed. He looked like he’d been there all night. Wordlessly, Will reached down and pulled Hannibal to his feet and then brought them both inside. He helped Hannibal get off his coat and then stripped them both down to their boxers, before pulling them in their room and into bed. They curled up around each other, Will’s face pressed against Hannibal's chest and Hannibal's arms around him, running his fingers through Will’s hair. They laid in silence together for a while, just counting each other's breaths and heartbeats.
Eventually, Hannibal broke the silence, his voice raspy and quiet. “I’m sorry.”
Will took a breath before answering.
“I’m sorry too.”
Pressing his face into Will’s curls, Hannibal's breathing hitched. “I wouldn’t ever leave you, not again.”
“I know Hannibal,” Will responded. He pulled back a little so they were looking at each other. Hannibal’s eyes were wet with tears as he looked back at him.
Leaning forward, Will kissed away the few droplets of water that had escaped.
“I was going to tell you, I just needed to work up to it.’
Hannibal was silent for a moment before he replied. “I understand your hesitation. If you wish to go to the hospital and be treated there, we can go. There would be a risk, but we can make it work if that is what you want.”
Will shook his head. “I want you to treat me. I just needed to get out of my head.” He smiled at the terrible pun, watching to see if Hannibal would react.
He didn’t, continuing to stare at Will mutely.
Will sighed, again. “Help me, Hannibal. Please?”
Hannibal nodded at that, pressing his forehead against Will’s, wet cheeks brushing against dry ones.
“Of course beloved. Anything you want.”
Will filed away the memory into his memory palace, and placed it with all of the other times Hannibal had cried for him. Beautiful reminders of his humanity.
“I love you, Hannibal.”
“I love you too Will, always.”

If you’re still doing these: how about comfort for when either Leon and/or Taka is sick or injured?
ALWAYS! Thank you so much! I'm excited to get cracking! Funnily enough, I've been kinda wondering about injury/ illness for them!
Mild trigger warning for past terminal illness below the stars, as well as some (not gory) details of broken bones.
Hope you enjoyyyyy!
*****************
Leon
• When Leon gets sick, Leons GETS SICK. Like proper man flu.
• He doesn't deal well with it at all. His body pretty much shuts down and he's bedridden, sleeping pretty much all the time.
• Thankfully, Taka is an excellent carer. Having taken care of his mother in her final months, he's used to all kinds of horrible things. So man flu is a piece of cake.
• For the first couple of days, he always leaves Leon be for the majority of the day - apart from waking him up to get him to sip some soup.
• He even sleeps on the sofa for those first few nights. Not because he's worried he'll catch Leon's cold - it's because he knows Leon will feel guilty about not cuddling and the last thing his boyfriend needs right now is extra stress.
• By day three, he's able to spend some time after work with him. Leon's never super talkative onnthe first day together. But the way he leans into Taka's touch, gazes sleepily up at him when he talks and whines when Taka tells him to get more sleep is enough for Taka to know he's on the mend.
• As the days go on Taka's able to give him some soft kisses, run his fingers through his hair and have normal conversations. And after about a week, Leon is back to functioning like a human being again.
• But the one thing he will always, ALWAYS, do as soon as Leon's up for getting out of bed is run a nice, warm bubble bath for them both to share.
• Leon always loves it because he can feel super close to the guy that's been taking care of him that he loves with all his heart, and will spend as much time as he can nuzzling happily into Taka's neck as he gets his hair and body washed.
• Taka of course feels the same, more than happy to smother Leon with the affection he's missed over the last few days...but he won't lie that he's just as desperate for Leon to stop smelling of BO!
Taka
• Taka is the kind of guy that powers through illnesses. He never took a sick day at school so why would he start doing in his worklife?
• Injury, however, he can't really power through - no matter how tough he may be.
• So when he goes over on his ankle badly on his way down the stairs one day, it catches him totally unaware and he yells out in agony as he drops to the ground.
• Leon, who's making a drink in the kitchen, doesn't quite know what to do after he's run out to check on Taka, who's now holding his foot up and off the floor.
• Despite being in an immense amount of pain, Taka has to (through gritted teeth) talk Leon through the next few stages. Because the poor guy is TOTALLY freaking out.
• 'Go get the car - park it as close as you can to the front door. You'll need to keep the back passenger door open. Then you need to come and get me and carry me to the car.'
• Leon just does as he's told, trying so hard to calm down so he doesn't crash the car on the way to the hospital.
• When it turns out Taka needs surgery on his ankle, Leon is A MESS. He tries to stay calm until Taka goes under. After that, he calls Mondo and Chi to help keep him company and stop from freaking out totally. It doesn't stop the tears though.
• By the time Taka's awake, Leon has calmed down. His boyfriend's okay and will need him to be his rock for the next six to eight weeks. Now it's time to show he can do it.
• Taka is a freaking NIGHTMARE during recovery. He mostly feels fine within himself so it's SO IRRITATING that he's bedridden. So his moods are up and down as he struggles to cope - temper flaring at the smallest thing.
• Leon is an angel. He does literally everything. He cooks, cleans, deals with Taka's rollercoaster emotions - all without complaining. He even helps Taka with his baths (which are beyond awkward - having to pretty much take Taka's full weight as he gets in and out of the tub and washing him since Taka's concentration has to go onto holding his leg out of the water).
• Every evening though, after Taka's moods having calmed down and Leon's snuggled with him undef the covers, watching a film on the TV that he's moved from the living room just for Taka, Taka always makes sure he apologises for his behaviour, telling Leon just how much he loves him and appreciates everything he's doing for him.
• And the sweetheart that is Leon simply smiles, kisses him on the lips and says:
• 'I'd do it all over again, as many times as it takes, if it means you're on the mend.'

I'll Always Be There for You
Tumblr media
“Rise and shine Miniture Mendes,” I heard my older brother’s voice somewhere at the end of my bed.
I didn’t answer immediately, hoping that if I ignored him, he would go away. Realistically I knew I was kidding myself, and this was confirmed moments later, when I felt him sit at the end of the bed, poking my leg until I finally let out a grunt of annoyance.
“And she lives!” he cheered, as if he was commentating a grand final sports match.
“Shawn, it is seven. In the morning. On a Saturday, you better have a good reason for being in my bedroom, annoying me this early.” I warned, pulling the pillow over my head.
“Sure do,” he chimed, fighting to pull the pillow away from me. “Get up, get dressed, you have your yearly check-up today.”
The reaction was instant, and he was quick to notice it. “Don’t start Hailey, we went through this last time you had to come in,” he cautioned, and I could see from his face, that there was going to be no changing his mind.
“Shawn!” I groaned, whacking him with the pillow I had just had over my head. As much as I loved my brother, I hated him equally at times like this. He had just qualified as an attending paediatrics doctor, and was now working at the local hospital with a bunch of his friends. “I’m sixteen, can’t I look after myself?” I begged.
“Nope, last time I let you do that, you nearly ended up dying on Connor's O.R. table, because you thought that appendicitis was ‘nothing’, ” he reminded me, using air quotes for effect.
“Ahhh, don’t remind me. Fine,” I conceded. There was no point, I knew that. It wasn’t even that I really disliked the doctors or the hospital for that matter. I just really didn’t like having my brother in my medical care. I found it awkward, something which he would remind me constantly that wasn’t the case at all. Well even that was a lie, it did come in helpful sometimes.
“Be ready in twenty minutes,” he spoke, getting up, straightening his scrubs, and walking out.
Sighing, I sat up, grabbing my phone. Help! I wrote, sending it to Dave one of Shawn's friends, and a fellow doctor. I had known Shawn's friends, Dave, Brian and Connor since I was little, and considered them to be adoptive brothers.
There was a ping from my phone, as I was in the bathroom, cleaning myself up. He told you then. <3 was the response. I cursed internally, if Dave knew, then it meant that Shawn was serious. After all, most of the time Dave was the one in charge of my medical care.
Dumping my phone back on the bed, I went to the wardrobe and grabbed the most comfortable pair of track pants I could find and paired these with a crop top and a parker. I spent another few minutes faffing about in my room, trying to find ways out of this, but when I heard Shawn grabbing his coat and keys from the hallway, I made my way down stairs feeling defeated.
“I hate you,” I spoke, pushing past my brother and stepping out the from the front door. Only to hit a body, hard.
“Easy there Little Lady,” Dave spoke as he caught and steadied me. “What’s up? Those were some fighting words!” he let my arm go, stepping back to look at me.
“Don’t start D, I hate you too, you knew and you didn’t tell me!” I accused, stepping around him and heading for his car, which he and Shawn usually car-pooled to work in.
“She’s been like this since I woke her, she’s tried to get out of it more than once already,” Shawn fixed me with a stern stare, silently warning me not to cause mischief.
“You make out like I’m such a bad patient, you’re such a drama queen!” I laughed as we buckled in and made our way down the street.
“Maybe you are.” Was the only reply I got. The rest of the car ride was quiet, I couldn’t help but sulk at my predicament.
When we finally got there, I trailed behind the guys, listening to them discussing their schedules for the day. Most of which consisted of making sure that their interns and residents were doing what they should be. I couldn't help but feel a little proud of them as I thought of how far they had come.
“You ready Little Lady?” Dave's voice, pulled me from my thoughts, and it was only then that I noticed that we had made it inside to the front desk, where Amy, the receptionist, and one of my favourite people resided.
“Hi Hailey, how are you sweets?” she asked as she typed on the computer, before addressing Shawn “All good, it’s all set up for you.”
We made our way to the exam room quickly, Dave unlocking the door, and dumping his belongings on his desk and switching the computer on, no doubt so he could check my records.
“Do I have to?” I asked, eying the bed off furiously, once again frustrated at Shawn for making me do this.
“Yes, you do pretty girl, why don’t you just take a seat next to your bro for now, I’ve just got some questions for you first. Grumbling to myself, I slumped into the seat next to Shawn, resting my head on his shoulder.
“I thought you hated me?” he laughed, somewhat confused, but rubbing my scalp comfortingly anyway.
“I do,” I agreed. “But if I’m asleep, you can’t start the exam, because you must have consent to do anything,” I explained, trying to hide the smirk that was now forming at my genius conclusions.
“Touché What you failed to mention though, was that the parentals have given me autonomy over your medical care in their absence since you’re still under eighteen. So right back at you sister,” he sassed, clearly proud of himself.
“Okay, okay, it’s too early for me to have to adjudicate a fight between you two!” Dave laughed, turning to face me. “Okay, Hailey, some of these questions may be a little embarrassing, but answer honestly okay?”
I nodded, feeling apprehensive.
“Do you smoke?” he asked, pausing to look at me. I fixed him with a glare, making him laugh. “I’ll take that a no.”
I put up with the questions, most of them not as bad as I had imagined, until he asked the dreaded one. “What about your period?”
I turned to Shawn, silently fuming at him. “I had to Hailey, you’ve been struggling for months with it.”
“No! You didn’t actually, last time I checked, I was the one bleeding,not you!” I yelled, moving to get up and walk out.
“Hailey, wait honey. I know it’s awkward, but if you can tell me what’s been going on, I’ll be able to fix it,” Dave, tried to reason, waiting for me to sit back down before continuing. "Shawn said you get bad cramps?” he prompted.
“Bad, bad doesn’t even to describe it. I can’t move without feeling like I’m going to faint or be sick,” I told him honestly.
“Last night, I found her curled up in tears because of the pain, I had to get her some fairly strong stuff,” Shawn added, grabbing my hand and giving it a squeeze.
I shuddered thinking back to the previous night.
... Shawn had come home late, and came in to check on me like he always did, but instead of finding me in bed reading like normal, I was curled in a ball in my bed practically rocking as I tried to get the pain under control.
"Again?" he'd asked looking at me with pity.
I nodded, "It's so bad Shawnie," I hiccupped, tears flowing unchecked down my checks and landing in small pools on my bed.
"I'm going to get you some pain relief okay," he'd spoken, moving to brush some of the hair out if my face. "I know it hurts, but try not to get too worked up, the more upset you get, the more pain you'll be in," he explained gently, getting up and going to my bathroom. I could hear him searching through my cabinet before he asked, "What have you taken today Poppet?"
"Just Tylenol," I groaned out as another wave of pain hit me.
"Here take this." he held a blue packet out for me to take.
"What is it?" I asked, not recognising the packaging.
"It's called Napropgesic, it'll help with the pain. It'll help to block the release of some of the hormones that are making you feel so sick and sore," he explained, grabbing the water glass from beside my bed and handing it to me. "Take two," he added.
"Will you stay with me?" I asked, catching his hand as he went to leave the room.
"Of course, honey," he'd said, coming to lay next to me on the bed, allowing me to cuddle into his chest.
"Get some rest," he murmurned, kissing the top of my head.
...
“Okay, so you have it now. Is it like that every time?” Dave asked seriously bringing me back to the present,typing as he spoke.
I nodded, feeling the tears welling up, I was so over having to deal with it, I didn’t even care anymore if I had to tell them embarrassing stuff. “It’s okay Little Lady, we’ll get it sorted, how about we get the rest of the exam done, and then we can get this sorted for you okay?” Dave came to give me a quick hug.
“Hop up on the bed, yeah.” I did so, sitting waiting for him to tell me what to do.
“Right, I’m just going to listen to your heart and lungs,” he told me, after washing his hands. “Just lift your shirt a little,” he told me as he rubbed the bell of the stethoscope to warm it up. “Deep breathes,” he instructed, listening.
Turning my head, I saw Shawn watching intently, sending me a ‘thumbs up’ when he saw me looking at him. “Nothing out of the ordinary there, that’s always good,” Dave spoke, moving to take my pulse.
He was quiet again for a minute, watching the clock. “Hmm,” he finished,"Shawn come here for a second.”
Getting up, my brother made his way over, taking my pulse as Dave had only moments before. I let out a whine at the fact that I was being fussed over, causing Dave to take my hand.
"Your pulse is fast," Shawn spoke, stepping back to look at me.
"And?" I asked, looking between the two doctors.
"Well, it could be a couple of things," Dave started, going to get supplies from a cupboard above his desk. "It could indicate Anemia, which would help to explain some of the period issues, but it could be something like an infection too. And that my dear is something we don't want, especially with you having had your appendix out only a week and a half ago. Just lay back for us," he instructed.
Shawn helped me lay down, before pulling my clothing away from where my scar was on my stomach.
"Ow!" I whimpered as Dave removed the dressing, exposing a red, and somewhat oozy looking cut.
"Sorry Hailey, normally this wouldn't hurt so much, but this is infected."
"Look at that," Shawn pointed out, having gone to get gloves on himself. "That looks like she's had a reaction to the sutures."
" I'll get Connor in here after to assess it, he may want to try leaving in open for a little."
"Open?" I squeaked, shooting up from the bed.
"Hailey!" Shawn grumbled, " What have I told you? Slow movements!" He looked somewhat grumpy, but I didn't blame him. He had already had to repair the stitches once for me.
After explaining the fact that open only meant that they would pack it with medicated gauze, Dave left the room, stating he had to, "Get some supplies."
When he came back I let out a loud groan, in his hand, he was holding supplies for a blood draw. "Come on Hailey, you'll be fine," he encouraged, prepping me for it. " I'm going to let Shawn do it as he's a pro," he told me, moving to sit beside me on the bed.
"Don't look Hailey. Sharp scratch," he warned as Shawn inserted the needle. I couldn't help myself though, and found myself watching the red liquid being drawn from my arm. I could feel myself getting faint at the sight, and before I knew it, darkness hard over come me.
I woke to a light tapping sensation on my face, and someone's fingers pressed to the inside of my wrist. "Welcome back," Shawn spoke, somewhat sarcastically. "I thought we told you not to look."
"I couldn't help myself." I pouted, excepting Dave's help in sitting up.
"Just sit for a second, we don't want you fainting again," he laughed, before walking around his desk and picking up the phone.
Minutes later, the door opened and Shawn and Dave's friends and colleagues Brian and Connor came into the room.
"How's out favourite patient?" Brian asked coming over to hug me.
"You look pale," Connor noted, standing beside Shawn at the bed with a frown.
"She just fainted at the blood draw," Shawn explained, rolling his eyes playfully.
Neither one of them responded, instead sending me sympathetic smiles.
"So, Dave said you've been having sereve cramps with your period?" Brian asked, without a fuss.
I stayed silent for a second, before sighing, and nodding. I loved the guys like I loved my own brother, but there were some things I just wanted to keep private. Especially as Brian was an obgyn. " Where is the pain mostly?" He asked coming over to rest his hand on my lower back. I nodded again, causing him to press with only slight pressure. This slight pressure though, sent pain radiating throughout my whole abdominal area, and into my back, nausea hitting me like a ton of bricks.
"I'm gonna be sick!" I gasped, leaning over the pan that Shawn had rushed to grab off the shelf.
"I'm sorry Sweet Pea," Brian apologised, rubbing my back. "Well I can tell you now, that it's referred pain that's causing you all the problems. Basically, all the ligaments are attached, and as the uterus contracts, you get pain in other places. Some girls get it worse than other's though."
"And the vomiting?" I asked once I had recovered a little.
"That will be the hormones, it's not dissimilar to a pregnant woman and morning sickness," he explained. "Lots of rest, fluids, heating pads, pain killers and some ice cream should do the trick." he winked.
"And iron tablets," Dave added, coming back from the desk where he had remained since the phone call. "Your iron levels are dismal Little Lady, it's no wonder you're having such a bad time of it!"
Lastly it was Connor's turn to check on me. "Just lie down for me again darling," he spoke, getting a set of gloves on. He only had to look at the incision for about thirty seconds, before nodding. "That's infected alright. I'm actually surprised you're not getting other symptoms. When did you first notice it?" He asked as he replaced his gloves, and went to get antibacterial solution and more gauze.
"I hadn't until Dave took the dressing off, but it's really hurting now."
"We'll get it sorted for you, and get you some pain killers and antibiotics just to ward off further trouble. This is going to sting a bit honey," he warned as he dabbed the liquid onto the wound.
"Ah," I hissed, reaching for my brother's hand.
"Nearly done sis," Shawn encouraged, stroking my hair.
When Connor was done, he gave me a shot of fairly strong antibiotics and pain killers, telling Shawn to take me home and watch me closely for any signs of fever, which of course, he knew. I did try to tell them I was fine, but they shut me down before I even got a chance to finish the sentence.
" Hailey, your stitches are infected, meaning that your immune system is compromised, you're clearly in pain, let your brother do his job, and take you home," Dave interrupted seriously. I felt guilty after that, and so didn't complain when Shawn put his arm around me as we made our way back out of the hospital to get a cab home.
When we got there, he set me up on the sofa, with blankets and pain meds, telling me to give him a yell if I needed anything.
"Shawn?" I called, as he made his way upstairs to the office. "Thank you, and I'm sorry I'm a difficult patient," I told him sincerely.
"Don't mention it. I'll always be there for you, " he replied, coming back down the stairs and shifting me onto his lap. That was how I spent the remainder of the day, cuddled up to my brother, knowing that if I needed anything he would do it without question.

"Lots of rest,fluids, heating pads, pain killers and some ice cream should do the trick," he winked.
"I hadn't until Dave took the dressing off,but it's really hurting now."
"Shawn?" I called, as he made his,way upstairs to the office. "Thank you,and I'm sorry I'm a difficult patient," I told him sincerely.
"Don't mention it. I'll always be there for you, " he replied, coming back down the stairs and shifting me onto his lap. That was how I spent the remainder of the day, cuddled up to my brother, knowing that if I needed anything he would do it without question. "

it’s been a long day, to say the least, and you’re completely okay with the idea of falling asleep and never waking up. that’s exactly what you’re preparing for, actually, curled up with the softest blanket you own on the worn sofa, tv remote in hand. you flip through the channels, not really paying attention to the quiet noise coming from the speakers in your otherwise silent apartment.
your roommate tried to get you to go out with her and some friends, but she hadn’t ever been too pushy; especially since you’ve gone through two breakups in the span of six months, one being the ending of a long-term relationship. you’re glad she left you alone, but you’re even more glad that you have time for yourself, just to think.
you’ve been doing a lot of that lately, thinking. thinking about what would’ve happened if shawn hadn’t said that on the phone, if you hadn’t overheard, if it hadn’t fueled your insecurities and ultimately caused the end of your relationship. you miss him all the time, but you’re determined to work on yourself and grow personally. it’s time to finally be healthy, you think, and that starts with a nice, long nap.
that is, until a light knock sounds from the door. you wouldn’t have heard it if you hadn’t been secretly hoping to hear from someone other than your roommate, who would’ve just walked in. you grumble in your half-asleep state when you stand from the couch, the soft cushions bouncing below you as you rise to your feet. you pull your cardigan tighter around your body, standing still for a moment when you reach the door to rub your eyes.
they’re still slightly closed when you open the door, muttering a questioning, “hello?”
“hi,” the person in front of you breathes out, the familiar voice rushing to your brain.
you swear you’ve never opened your eyes so quickly.
there he is, disheveled and slouched over, but so, so relieved. he hadn’t expected you’d actually answer the door. you’re still speechless when he speaks again. “i know this is borderline stalkerish, but amir gave me your address and i really needed to see you,” he sighs with a slight smile, rubbing the back of his neck.
your jaw is slack for another moment before you finally speak. “uhm, i, uh, shawn.” confusion crosses your features when you stutter out your jumbled thoughts. “it’s been six months.”
“i know, i know but please, just hear me out,” he pleads, almost desperately.
“come in, then. and tell amir that i have some things to say to him next time we see each other!” you turn around, leading him into your home. he only chuckles. you enter the small kitchen, turning on the overhead light before leaning back against the countertop.
“welcome to my humble abode,” you laugh at the small space, suddenly self-conscious. “it’s obviously not as big as your condo, but-“
“no, it’s perfect. it’s very you,” he smiles, glancing around the room.
“thanks,” you mumble shyly, before speaking up again. “do you want tea?”
“do you have the mango stuff?”
“i might still have some,” you reply, rummaging through the cupboards. “ i think i brought it with me when i moved out of your place.” the tension thickened at the mention of you leaving, and honestly, you can’t believe you’ve gotten this far without bursting out into tears.
maybe that’s why your head is stuffed in the cupboard you know doesn’t have mango tea in it, just so you don’t have to look at him. you haven’t gotten any of the tea since you moved in, since you left, for that matter, but you haven’t let it leave its place at the back of the cupboard. while it may seem that it’s just tea, it’s all you’ve had left of him that’s yours and yours alone.
“so, shawn,” you clear your throat, easily grabbing the tea from its place in a different cabinet. “what’s up?”
he’s silent for a minute, watching as you turn on the kettle. he’s looking down when he speaks again, “i miss you. i know you have a boyfriend, but i really do.” he looks up at you with wide eyes, the warm brown colour filling your vision.
you laugh, turning back to face the counter. “you basically wrote an entire album about it,” you pour the hot water over the teabags in your ceramic mugs. “i’m not sure you could’ve been less subtle. besides, we broke up a couple weeks ago.” you look at him over your shoulder with a shy smile.
“i’m sorry.”
“don’t be, it’s not like i’ve never gone through a breakup before,” you assure, a slight tone of sadness present in your voice. you walk over to him, a mug of tea in each hand.
“y/n come on, please don’t be like that,” he sighs, taking a mug from your hand. he’s never liked to see you upset, and this is no different.
“like what, shawn? hurt? sad? conflicted?” you look at him with glossy eyes, and he can see the disconnect. you’re simultaneously so close and so far away from him and yourself. it’s hard for him to see you like this -  even harder knowing that he caused it.
you sit down on one of the round barstools, looking up at him while he stares down into his mug. “thanks for the tea,” he smiles forcefully, eyes flickering up then back down.
“it’s no problem.”
the room falls silent again, the only sounds the soft passes of your breathing. you’re not sure what to say, and you’re about to ask if shawn wants to take his tea with him when he breaks the silence.
“i love you,” he says, surprising himself with the firmness he speaks with. you’re surprised too, your breath catching in your chest, looking at him, bewildered.
“no, shawn, i- you can’t. you can’t love me.” you shake your head.
“i do!”
“no! if you love me now, you would’ve loved me six months ago,” you sob, tears finally running down your face.
“but i did. i did love you and i haven’t stopped. i never stopped loving you, y/n,” he tells you, walking over to your spot at the counter. he brushes his thumbs against your cheeks, the fresh tears running slowly down his hands.
“i’m sorry, shawn, i really can’t do this. not after everything you’ve done.” you push him away gently, sliding off the stool.
“what do you mean, ‘everything i’ve done’?” he asks with furrowed brows.
“the album, shawn! every single song on that album, your album, taunted me like i was the one who fucked up. you fell out of love with me shawn, you can’t release an album full of old love songs and expect me to beg for your forgiveness. i never wanted to leave you, but i wanted you to be happy. why couldn’t you just let yourself move on like you so desperately wanted to?” you cry, breaking his heart even more than you already had.
“i told you, i never fell out of love with you! i never wanted to move on, i wanted to fix us!” he exclaims, the hurt turning into anger.
“well that turned out fucking great! now we’re standing here in my kitchen, brokenhearted, at 9 pm on a saturday because of it!” you yell back, trying not to be too loud for the sake of your neighbours.
“i don’t know what to tell you, y/n,” he says, the initial rage bubbling back down.
“obviously you do since you showed up here in the first place!” your tea’s abandoned on the countertop, and all of the frustration you’ve been holding in for the past six months is flying out of you. while you’re sure you’ll regret all of this in the morning, you can’t bring yourself to care.
your cheeks are flushed and your breathing’s heavy, you’re more angry than shawn’s ever seen you. he hates this too, he just hates when you’re not happy, and he hates that you’re not his anymore.
“y/n, it’s always been you, i promise. i was stupid and i made a mistake. i’m so sorry.” he wants to make you look him in the eyes and see the sincerity floating behind them, he wants you to believe him and every word that he’s saying, but he won’t, and he doesn’t.
“you made a mistake and you broke me, shawn. i’m sick and tired of being so lonely but i can’t find the will to change. i don’t want to feel like this, but i can’t go back to you,” you breathe out, your voice lowering to almost a whisper.
“i never wanted to hurt you,” his voice is almost as low, but just as full of emotion.
“i know,” you smile, and for the first time in a while, it’s almost genuine. “i don’t hate you shawn, i never could. and i don’t want you to think that this has been easy for me either, because honestly, these last few months have been some of the worst of my life. when i walked out of that apartment i walked out on my best friend, and i am sorry.”
“please don’t apologize, it’s my fault, i know,” he says sheepishly.
“you’re right, it is your fault,” you reply with a giggle.
“well, uhm, now that i know you don’t hate me, this’ll be a lot less awkward.” his eyes scan over your face, trying his best to read your emotions.
you laugh again, “it’s already awkward, shawn. what are you doing?”
“please, please just let me hold you,” he pleads, his eyes staring into yours.
“what?”
“i just- i don’t know or care what happens when i leave, but i need to be close to you. i’m not ready to lose you, y/n. i can’t lose you. this is painfully awkward, i know, but i promise i’ll shut up if you let me have you for a bit. or i’ll just leave, if you’d rather, which i can totally do-”
a small smile paints across your face at his rambling as you cut him off. “no! no, shawn, please don’t leave.”

“HURRY UP SIERRA, WE WANT TO GO!” Jace yelled from the front door. Y/n was sitting on the couch, scrolling through social media. She had mentioned that Tom might show up that night, which caused Sierra to obsess over her appearance more than usual.
She appeared in the doorway of her room, just in sight of the two roommates.
“Do I look amazing yet Jace?”
“Yes, of course you do. Can we go now?”
“The correct answer was no, dipshit, so shut your mouth and let me finish or I’ll start moving slower.”
He let out a loud sigh as he watched her disappear to her bathroom again. He plopped down on the couch next to y/n, his weight forcing her to lean his way.
“You are the least patient person I know, how are you ok with this?”
“She likes the kid, just give her a break.”
“I’ve given her a break for the last 2 hours. I’ve hit my limit, Peach.”
She tensed a little hearing him call her that again. He started calling her that a few weeks after they met. She never knew why he had chosen it, but she liked nicknames so she never complained. The last time she had heard him call her that was the night he confessed his feelings though. Hearing it again brought back the memories.
“Y/n, I need to talk to you.”
“What is it Butthead?” She smiled as she used the nickname she had given him, a lot less endearing than the one he had for her.
“I’m being serious.”
“Ok, fine, what’s up?”
They were in their kitchen, Sierra had just gone out for the night, making some excuse about going out to dinner with someone she never named. Y/n sat down on the counter, across the room from Jace. He was subconsciously placing himself as far away from her as he could. His nerves were getting the best of him.
“Well, uhm, Sierra told me if I didn’t talk to you tonight she would kill me, or she would talk to you herself, but I-I don’t, uh, I don’t really…”
“Jace you’re killing me, please, just spit it out,” she giggled a little, the last time he would hear that for a while.
“I like you, Peach. L-like a lot.”
“You ok?” his question pulled her mind back to the present.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, no I’m fine. Just zoned out for a second.”
“Ok, well, while you zone back in, I’m going to go grab Sierra and literally carry her out the front door.”
“Jace, give her 2 minutes. I promise she’ll be ready,” she laughed at how irritated he was. It was nice to have some sense of normalcy between them again.
“Fine, but if I have to wait a second longer than that, I might die.”
“I’ll make sure the funeral starts on time.”
The both laughed at her reply, before falling into a comfortable silence. She continued to scroll through instagram, while Jace sat and picked at some loose strings on their couch.
“Ok, I’m ready,” Sierra announced, her shoes clicking on the floor as she entered the living room.
“Finally,” Jace groaned, making his roommates giggle as they headed out the door.
When parties were too far for the trio to walk to, they would usually take turns being designated drivers. Occasionally they would call an Uber so they could all drink, but tonight, y/n wasn’t so lucky. It was her turn to drive, which meant no drinking for her.
When they got to the house, Sierra ran off, commanding her friends to text her if they saw Tom.
Jace followed y/n into the first room of the house, grabbing himself a drink and sitting on a couch next to her.
“Hey, uh, I wanted to say, I’m….I’m really glad we’re talking again,” he struggled to get out, trying his best to not make eye contact.
“Me too.”
“You know, I… I never wanted you to feel pressured…”
“Jace, shut up.”
“Seriously though.”
“I know, I just… I don’t really want to talk about it. If you’re ok with that.”
“Yeah…I’m gonna go get another drink. I’ll see you later.”
He got up off of the couch, a half full cup in his hand. She knew he could have spent another 10 minutes drinking it, he just needed an excuse to get out of the situation. He needed an excuse to get away from her. Again.
And the guilt hit her like a truck just as it had the first time.
“What do you mean you like me?”
“Like, I have a crush on you. God, it sound so dumb like that. But I’ve liked you for months now and Si has been bugging me to tell you, I just…”
“Jace stop.”
“I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything, I just figured…”
“Jace, fucking stop,” she burst out. He stopped talking and his face turned white, he knew that he had made a mistake.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to yell, I just….”
“No, it’s fine, I get it.”
“Jace, I’m sorry, I just… don’t really do the whole relationship thing,” she muttered, her gaze unable to meet his. She could feel the tears brimming her eyes, and although she knew his were in the same state, she couldn’t bring herself to see him.
“Oh, ok, yeah, I get it, honestly. I didn’t want to tell you anyway. Sierra just wouldn’t shut up about it.”
She could sense his heart breaking, but trying to mend it would only make it worse, so she kept quiet, no matter how much she wanted to apologize and hug him.
“Well I had plans tonight too, so I’m going to head out.”
As he headed for the door, she finally looked up at him. He was no longer looking at her, but the single tear was still visible on his cheek. Her heart felt too heavy for her to move, and it kept her from calling after him.
About an hour into the party, y/n was losing her mind with boredom. She hadn’t seen either of her roommates, and although she saw plenty of familiar faces, she wasn’t really in the mood to socialize with any of them.
She finally got off of the couch where Jace had left her and made her way to the back yard. She knew her roommates well enough to know that if they were partying, they would be inside socializing and dancing. But since she knew one of them would be flirting and the other would be sulking, they were both going to be outside.
Sure enough, they were both outside in an area with a diverse array of patio furniture and torn up couches. Y/n was a little surprised to see Sierra and Jace together. Sierra was sitting incredibly close to Tom on one of the couches, her back to Jace and Harrison who seemed to be getting along very well.
As y/n approached, she could tell that Jace hadn’t been drinking much. She was pretty sure the drink in his lap was the same one from their earlier conversation. Sierra on the other hand was well over the line of tipsy.
“Hey, y/n! I was just about to come looking for you babe!” Sierra exclaimed a little too loudly when she saw her approaching.
“Oh yeah? And why’s that? Looks like you’re having a great time right here.”
Sierra excused herself from the couch, pulling y/n a few feet away, out of earshot of the boys.
“What did you say to Jace?”
“Oh come on.”
“No, you come on, I see him sulking. Now what did you do?”
Y/n scoffed, sighing before she replied. “I asked him not to talk about the ‘incident’. I thought it would make it easier, but I guess we’re not on the same page.”
“Ugghhhhhhh, why can’t you guys just get along for like two minutes? That would really make living with both of you a lot easier.”
“How about, instead of worrying about us, just go back over to Tom and have a good night. “
“You have to fix this at some point.”
“And tonight is not that point, ok?”
The stress and guilt of the situation was starting to peek through her facade, so Sierra dropped the subject and hugged her friend, before leaving her to go back to sit next to Tom.
Y/n had the urge to go back inside. It seemed like the lesser of 2 evils. She could either go inside and be alone and bored, or stay and have to choose between sitting by the overly flirtatious pair, or sit with Harrison and her sulking roommate.
Before she could turn to leave, Harrison called her name, ruining her plan of leaving. She made her way over to stand behind him and Jace on the couch.
“Thanks for the invite. As terrible of a sight as that is,” he said, motioning to the couple, “I’m hoping this means he’ll shut up about her for five minutes.”
“That’s some wishful thinking. I give you a 15% chance of that happening.”
“You want a drink?” Harrison asked, pointing towards the house.
“No, I’m driving tonight.”
“Well want to come help me fight through the crowd?”
“Sure.”
Harrison asked Jace if he wanted to tag along, but of course he denied.
She followed Harrison into the house, pushing her way through the sweaty bodies so she could keep up with him.
While he searched for a cup and something to pour, he told her about his day. He complained about something that had happened in class before they had been assigned as partners, then told her about something that had happened inside the coffee shop he had stopped at on the way home. She tried her best to pay attention, but she couldn’t seem to listen. Her brain was dwelling on Jace’s expression when she joined them and when they left without him. She knew she had hurt him, but she didn’t think it was fair that he acted like a child about it for so long. She felt bad for not liking him back, the guilt was eating her alive, but she didn’t deserve to receive the glares out of the corner of his eyes when she was around. She knew it was just out of pain, but she was getting sick of it.
“You ok?” Harrison asked, looking at her with a bit of concern.
“Yeah, sorry, I just got distracted.”
“This is probably none of my business but did you and your roommate have a fight or something? You both seem a little miserable,” he commented, giving her a sympathetic smile.
“Sierra seems completely fine,” she joked, hoping to avoid the topic. The whole situation with Jace was enough drama, she didn’t want to suck anyone else into it.
“I think we both know what I meant,” he laughed. She took a second to consider telling him, but ultimately decided against it. He was right, it wasn’t his business.
“It’s a long story, don’t worry about it,” she excused him, quickly turning on her heel to make her way back out to the couches. Harrison grabbed his cup and pushed past a few people to catch up with her.
They both sat back down on the couch where Jace was staring off into space. She could see that he still hadn’t touched his drink.
“So how do you two know each other?” he questioned, finally moving his gaze to the two.
Harrison explained that they were assigned as partners and that she was the one who had invited him and Tom that night. Jace’s expression showed nothing but confusion.
“You’re taking a photography class?”
“Uh, yeah,” she replied, really wishing that she had a drink in that moment.
She loved her roommates, no one could question that. She made meals for them whenever she got the chance and she would go all out for birthdays and holidays. She always did her best to show them how much their friendship meant, but she made a point to never tell them much about herself.
They didn’t know her family, where she was from, her aspirations, her fears, or anything that even came close to the personal category. She had mentioned once that her major was in the art’s department, but they had been drunk at a party, so no one seemed to pick that up.
Her roommates definitely noticed that she was weird about that information, but they loved her personality and they didn’t want to lose a friendship just over the fact that she didn’t want to talk about herself.
Harrison, however, thought it was insane that her roommate didn’t know about her major.
“How did you not know that? Don’t you two live together?”
“Yeah, I guess it just never came up,” she replied shyly, hoping to drop the topic soon.
“You never thought to ask each other what your majors are before you decided to live together?”
“I know Jace’s major.”
“Really?” Jace asked, surprised that she had paid enough attention. He wasn’t as conservative as she was in giving out personal information, but he knew for a fact that his major was never a topic of discussion between them.
“Yeah, you’re a film major.”
“How did you know that?”
“What kind of roommate doesn’t know the other’s major?” she joked.
“It’s not my fault that you’re little Miss guarded.”
“Oh, shut up.”
Jace went back to talking to Harrison while y/n sat quietly beside them. Nights where she was the designated driver were never fun for her. She always ended up babysitting the others somehow. She had once literally dragged Sierra into the car after she had blacked out. But that night was a little less miserable. By all means, it should have been worse. The passive aggressive nature of her relationship with Jace was bad enough, but watching Sierra being overly flirtatious made her feel sick. Despite this, she found herself in a good mood as the night went on.
Harrison was quite charming, and she laughed at quite a few of his jokes. Most people she hung around were very demanding with needy personalities, which made being around them exhausting, but Harrison was the opposite. He could talk and tell stories and ask questions for hours. She found it refreshing.
As midnight rolled around, Sierra had fallen asleep on Tom who had joined in on the conversation between the 3 on the couch. Jace made some complaint about it getting late. He had a morning class the next day that he needed to get sleep for, and as much as she wanted to force him to stay as payback for the previous night, y/n told him she would meet him out by the car. She watched him say goodbye to Harrison before he made his way through the dwindling crowd inside.
“Si,” y/n called over to her friend, throwing a pillow to hit her in the chest. Once it hit her, she jumped and yelped.
“What the hell, y/n?” she asked drowsily.
“Jace wants to go. You ready?”
She answered with a loud groan.
“I’m taking that as a yes. Come on, he’s out front.”
As she watched Sierra slowly make her way off of the chair, she turned to Harrison.
“How are you guys getting home?”
“We’re going to call an Uber.”
“If you wanna save some money you can ride with us.”
Harrison agreed that sounded like a good idea.
Tom’s arms remained around Sierra, guiding her through the crowd so she didn’t fall, although he wasn’t much steadier than her.
When they finally exited through the front door, y/n searched the yard for Jace. He was standing on the sidewalk with a cigarette between his fingers. Y/n let out a loud sigh, turning to Harrison.
“Do me a favor and keep the drunk idiots over here for a second?”
“Yeah, sure,” he agreed a bit reluctantly.
She nervously made her way over to Jace, not exactly sure what she was going to say.
He had quit smoking 6 months prior. It was a bad habit that was really affecting his health, so the girls helped him quit. But here he was, staring off into the distance with a cigarette between his lips yet again.
Y/n approached him from behind, quietly and carefully considering her words.
“You’re smoking again?”
He barely made an effort to look at her out of the corner of his eye, grunting an affirmative response.
“I thought you kicked the habit.”
“Well, shit happens. Why would you care anyway?”
“Because I care about you not dying.”
“Have a funny way of showing it.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
She was trying to keep her voice down, suddenly very aware of how close Tom, Harrison, and Sierra were.
“I think you know exactly what it’s supposed to fucking mean. I’ll meet you guys at the car,” he stomped on the butt of his cigarette and stormed off in the direction of her vehicle.
Y/n stood defeated in the spot where Jace had left her. She wished she could blame his temper on alcohol, but she knew he had barely had enough to give him a buzz. As she was processing the event, she heard Sierra behind her.
“I told you you need to fix it,” she mumbled.
“I’m working on it,” y/n grumbled in frustration, turning to look at her.
“Well it doesn’t seem like it.”
“I really don’t need this from both of you.”
Y/n turned on her heel and started to walk in the same direction and fashion Jace had just a minute prior.
Jace was already in the back of the car. Tom and Sierra joined him, her head rested comfortably on his shoulder for the entire duration of the ride.
Harrison sat in the front seat, trying not to awkwardly laugh at the uncomfortable situation which had resulted in a heavy silence in the car. The only noise present was the hum of the motor and the occasional direction he would give y/n so she could find her way to his apartment.
When she dropped them off, Harrison thanked her for the ride and gave her a sympathetic smile, which she did her best not to roll her eyes at.
Tom kissed Sierra on the cheek, asking her if their plans to see each other the next day were still valid. She nodded her head, kissing his cheek as well before he shut the door.
The silence carried out until they got back to their apartment. As soon as y/n had put the car in park, Jace was out, slamming the door in the process. He stormed off toward their building.
“Guess I’m walking you in,” y/n sighed, eyeing the drunk girl in the back.
As they walked towards the building, y/n couldn’t help but smile at Sierra. She was giggling and blushing down at her phone, the name Tom present at the top of the screen.
“So I heard him ask if he’s gonna see you tomorrow. You guys going on a date?”
“Yeah,” she beamed.
“I’m glad you’re so happy. But let him know if he breaks your heart, I’ll chop his balls off.”
“I will,” Sierra rolled her eyes and laughed.
It took another ten minutes to get Sierra up the stairs and into bed. Y/n helped her take her shoes off and even tucked her in. She was exhausted by the time she had made it to her own mattress.
She plugged in her phone, checking the time before she went to the bathroom to wash off her makeup. It was 1 am, and she didn’t have the energy to take a proper shower. But then again, when did she ever have the energy?
When her face was washed and she was in something comfortable enough to sleep in, she collapsed into her bed.
Thoughts about the night kept her stirring and wide awake. After fifteen minutes of tossing and turning, she finally grabbed her phone off of her nightstand and scrolled to the conversation she had labeled as “model boi”.
“Hey, sorry about all the drama tonight. Hope you and Tom still had a good time.”
(Pls comment/ask/message me any thoughts you have on the chapter! I am still overly excited about you guys reading this!!)

James Dean and Daria
PART TWENTY-FIVE OF THE DO YOU SEE HER FACE? SERIES
Pairing: Jess Mariano x Original Character (Ella Stevens)
Warnings: mentions of alcoholism, plentiful pop culture references
Word Count: 5.3K
Summary: Ella receives a book in the mail and attends an open house.
two years later
A Ramones song was stuck in her head, and Ella hummed along with its tune as she twirled around the diner. Her hair, freshly cut, was back in a black bandana. She blew her wispy curtain bangs away from the sides of her forehead as she served up lunch. Lane was on shift, and they bounced around together in sync. Working with her made everything a little sunnier. Lorelai had always said Ella and Lane were night and day, respectively. The thought of it made Ella smile as she joined her friend behind the counter again. Recently, Lane had been experimenting with contacts, and it was still jarring to see her without her trademark glasses.
They made a dynamic duo, as Luke was off to fix random bits and bobs at the Inn. With he and Lorelai engaged, he was over there doing repairs for free nearly half the time. During which time, especially in the afternoons, Ella was left to look after Luke’s daughter, April. To say she was shocked when Luke told her he had a twelve-year-old kid that some woman from his past had never told him about would’ve been an understatement. But soon, April was fitting into the groove of town. Ella was always glad to do homework with her (not that the brainiac ever needed help per se) or listen to the girl’s long-winded monologues about obscure scientific principles. Sometimes, Ella hardly believed Luke and April were related. The girl could talk for days without taking a breath if she had the chance. Watching April concentrate over her textbooks and scribble essays during the early dinner rush sometimes made Ella’s heart do a little, nostalgic twist. She was no longer the girl doing calculus at the corner table. To everything there was a season.
“‘I Wanna Be Sedated’?” Lane asked, breaking Ella out of her reverie.
Ella turned to Lane with a small smirk, arms crossing over her chest. Breathing out a sigh, she gave a nod. Things were finally slowing down, almost everyone with a plate in front of them. She had taken over the floor for the day. Lane’s wedding to Zach was only weeks away, and Lane was stressed enough as it was. Ella figured having Lane on register would at least be a decent method to avoid her passing out.
Lane narrowed her eyes and tilted her head at her friend. “What’s got you in such a good mood?”
Shrugging, Ella turned to make a pot of coffee. “I don’t know. I’m a college graduate. Besides, is Ramones really good mood music?”
Lane scoffed. “For you? Definitely.”
“Just happy to have all this education, maybe,” Ella said.
Though it had been a whole five days since her graduation, she was still basking in the glow of it. She couldn’t believe she had managed to get through school in three years instead of four. It meant the upcoming summer would be her first real break from school since the summer after high school. During her last finals, she had been nearly ready to tear her hair out. Suffice it to say, it was time to stop studying for at least a little while.
“So, I guess we’ll be hearing about this summa cum laude thing forever, huh?” Lane teased.
Ella’s smile grew wider. “Forever is a strong word. ‘The foreseeable future’ would be more accurate.”
Lane rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
“And what’s got you all grumpy today? That’s my job. Did a Freaky Friday situation happen without my knowledge?” Ella asked.
Sighing heavily, Lane went back over to the register, seeing some customers finishing up their meals. “I told you my mom wants me to wear her wedding dress, right?”
Ella nodded.
“Well, she finally showed it to me. And it has pants!”
Biting the inside of her cheek, Ella swallowed down the laugh which threatened to leave her lips.
“I gave it to Lorelai. Hopefully something along the lines of salvageable will come of it,” Lane grumbled, adjusting her apron anxiously.
“Hey, Lorelai made that renaissance dress I wore to Liz’s wedding wearable. I’m sure she’ll work her magic,” Ella said, turning to see Luke return as the bell over the door jingled.
“We’ll see,” Lane said, sighing again as a young couple came up to the register, ready to pay for their patty melts.
As Luke approached, Ella saw he had the mail in his hands. He looked almost haggard, with dark circles under his eyes. She knew he and Lorelai had been having some problems, but didn’t know the details. It wouldn’t be surprising if the new daughter or the prolonged engagement had something to do with it, though. Since she and Rory had fallen out of touch, Ella saw Lorelai less and less. And it wasn’t like Luke was a chatterbox.
“Something came for you,” Luke said shortly, handing Ella a puffy orange envelope.
As soon as she took it, she could tell it was a book. Confusion painted her features; it wasn’t often she got mail addressed to Luke’s. She’d been living at Lane’s for almost two years. Furrowing her brows, she looked in the upper right corner and her face immediately fell when she saw the familiar, spiky handwriting. Clearing her throat, she plastered on a complacent expression.
“I’m gonna take a fifteen, okay?” she said, clutching the package tightly in her hands.
Luke nodded. “You alright?”
Ella smiled thinly. “Yeah. Just gotta take the smell of the stock room in as much as I possibly can. I’ve only got it until the end of July.”
Rolling his eyes, Luke shook his head. “I’m counting the seconds.”
“Hey, I could quit right now! Then where would you be?!” she exclaimed dramatically, a bit which never seemed to get old.
Luke grunted doubtfully. “Don’t tease.”
Smirking slightly, she finally turned on her heel and went back into the stock room. It was dim, piled high with boxes and cans. But there was the comforting smell of dust and pine, making her feel just a touch less queasy. Sitting on the lone table in the middle on the shelves, her legs dangling over the sides with boots heavy on her feet, Ella stared down at Jess’s writing for a moment. It only made sense he would send her something at the diner. He probably had no idea where she lived, if she was still even in Stars Hollow.
Her mind wandered to their last conversation, her night up on the plaid couch, crying. When Jess had called to tell Luke he was back in New York, Luke said Jess had told him to say hello to her. She’d told him to say hello back, a half-hearted message. And she was glad to know his trip had been safe. Glad he had apparently mended fences with Luke. But when she thought of actually speaking to him, hearing his voice, it made her feel sick with nerves. All she could see was his heartbroken expression when she had told him she wouldn’t come with him. Hear his pleading. Many times, she had pulled out the small slip of paper with his cell number written on it, had thought about reaching out. But, it simply hurt too much.
And she would have no idea where to begin. He had apologized. And she had rejected him. She didn’t regret it, didn’t feel bad about what she had said or done. But she knew there would be a shift between them. All the words they spoke would have a whispered ‘what if’ underneath. It seemed like too much to put him through. Jess probably wouldn’t like to hear her voice either, she thought. As angry as she had been before, she just couldn’t bear to hurt him anymore. It was more trouble than it was worth. So, each time Luke spoke with Jess, they exchanged fleeting greetings through him. It was impersonal, cold, but, they always knew the other was alive. The deal still stood, even after everything.
Running her finger along the address on the package, written in black permanent marker, Ella felt a storm of emotion brewing within her. Time and distance had been kind; when she thought of him, she didn’t think betrayal, she didn’t think resentment. Somehow, their final argument had cleansed her of those feelings. He had come back. She had never expected it. But, at least, he had come back for her, even if she didn’t exactly want it. Instead of anger, there was only sadness, for months. She had walked around with an aura of gloom. But then, life had gotten busier, and it faded.
Instead, as the pad of her finger curved over his name again and again, she thought of her books, filled with their writing to each other. She thought of his smirk, ever-present when she was around. And his brown eyes, guarded but so often kind. And his fears, shared only with her. And, above all, she thought of him telling her he loved her. With tears running down his cheeks, anxious hands raking through his hair.
Love. That word she had always scoffed at. While she still wasn’t one to utter it lightly, she had slowly come around. As the world moved around her, and she was finally away from her childhood home, she began to see it. Luke and Lorelai, mostly. She almost felt silly, having watched a love story unfold before her eyes in the diner for years and years. Perhaps as a teen, she had been too headstrong. Perhaps she had been unable to see how her own fears had stopped her from living the way she wanted to, a pattern she had been able to see so clearly in Lane and Jess. Without the constant reminder of her parents’ doomed union, she felt better each day. More open.
But still, she had no idea how to feel about Jess. Surely, he had moved on. She didn’t know where he was, what he was doing. Luke had only told her he was doing well. And she had never asked for details. No use in ripping open old wounds. But it seemed the ball wasn’t entirely in her court. Jess had made a move. Again. Biting at the inside of her cheek, she heaved a big sigh and ripped open the side of the package. Inside it, she found a book, as she expected.
But her breath caught as she ran her eyes over the black-and-white cover: The Subsect by Jess Mariano. Her heart skipped a beat in her chest and a grin came over her lips before she could stop it. She knew it was only a matter of time. He was a writer. He always had been. As she flipped open the inside cover, a slip of heavy, purple paper fell out. A crease formed between her brows as she took the paper in one hand, eyes gravitating to the words scribbled in pen on the novel’s second page.
Before she could begin the handwritten message, she looked to the dedication. A lump formed in her throat. For Eleanor, it read simply. Her hazel eyes shone with glassy tears, and the surreality of the moment hit her like a ton of bricks. Swallowing down the sob which threatened to escape, she turned to the inscription before she could get caught up in her emotions.
I wasn’t sure how to tell you about this. But I wanted to let you know somehow, considering it wouldn’t have happened without you. And writing in a book seemed like the best way, since it’s worked for us in the past. I included an invite to the Open House thing we’re having at Truncheon, the place which was stupid enough to publish this. You don’t have to come, and I don’t expect you to. But, in case you did want to come see what I couldn’t have done without you, you’re more than welcome.
-Jess
Chewing on her thumbnail, Ella picked up the purple invite and ran her eyes over the address. Philadelphia. She smirked at the coincidence. She could see him there. Always a city boy. And, though nerves coursed through her veins and butterflies flew around in her stomach, she knew immediately that she would soon be seeing the liberty bell.
.   .   .
Smoothing her hands over her dress, Ella took in a deep breath. Her battered blue station wagon was parked behind her on the street, and for a split second, she thought about running back to it. Driving all the way back up to Connecticut in a continuous three-hour stretch. But she knew there would be at least a few familiar faces inside Truncheon Books. Luke had offered to be a chaperone for some road trip with April’s school, and they, of course, were also invited to the open house. Initially, Luke had been wary of them both being away from the diner, but Ella assured him Lane and Caesar could handle it. And, of course, he would have to learn to deal without her by the end of the July. She and Lane would be even when Ella took all the shifts for the week of her and Zach’s honeymoon. Yes, Ella’s final week as a waitress at Luke’s was bound to be grueling.
Biting down on the inside of her cheek, Ella opened the door and entered the publishing house before she could talk herself out of it. The place was crowded, lots of people mingling at a table near the entrance and next to the coat rack. The green walls were lined with art, and the room was filled with warm, richly-toned wood. She hung her bag as her heart sat heavy in her chest. She hadn’t realized just how anxious walking into Jess’s new world was going to make her. A small smile formed on her face, though, as she scanned the crowd for Luke and April. When she didn’t instantly find them, she crossed her arms and walked toward the collection of photographs on a wall near the door. They showed visions of the city: an old newspaper stand, a rusty bike, a group of angry teenagers sat around a statue of Thomas Jefferson. She’d never been good with technology, including cameras, and she envied the photographer who could capture images like these.
Across the room, Jess spotted her. Her blonde waves fell down her back, just past her shoulder blades, shorter than he’d ever seen her hair. There was a tattoo on the back of one of her calves, and one on the inside of her left forearm. She was too far away though, and he couldn’t quite make out what they were. As expected, she was dressed only in blacks and greys, her dress checkered with the two colors. And, as expected, her all-black oxfords had no heel. Before he could stop it, a grin crossed his face, and his hand tightened around the half-empty beer bottle he was nursing. Never had he actually thought she would show up. But there she was. Matthew, who stood next to him on the stairs, instantly noticed his friend’s change in expression. He followed Jess’s eyes, and it dawned on him. Jess didn’t talk about the woman he’d dedicated The Subsect to a lot. But the blonde standing before the photography section fit the description Jess had spewed drunkenly on his last birthday almost perfectly.
Matthew raised knowing brows. “Is that her?”
“What?” Jess asked, blinking slightly as he looked away from her and turned back to the co-owner of his business.
Scoffing out a chuckle, Matthew shook his head. “That’s the girl, isn’t it? The one you wrote the book for.”
Breathing a big sigh, Jess took another sip of his drink and nodded slowly. “Is it that obvious?”
“Oh, yeah,” Matthew laughed, clapping Jess on the shoulder. “Now’s your chance.”
Jess snorted a bitter laugh, looking away from his friend and down at his shoes. “There’s no chance.”
Before Matthew could say anything more, Jess descended the final two stairs. Matthew was still chuckling behind him. No matter how much Chris and Matthew drove him up the wall sometimes, he would always be grateful. They’d published his book. They’d welcomed him into the company before it even existed, into the apartment upstairs. They’d become his family without him even noticing it. And he knew no matter how torn up he would be after speaking with Ella (and he knew he would be, at least a little), they’d get him through it. As they had gotten him through the heartbreak the first time, when he’d shown up on the doorstep of a company he’d heard about through some friends in New York, a company which didn’t even have a name, just some printing equipment. Tossing the empty beer in the recycle near the front refreshment table, Jess took another breath in. He could thank her for everything she’d done, then watch her leave without completely crumbling. Maybe if he was confident enough in himself, Jess thought, it would be so.
Walking up next to her, Jess bit down on his bottom lip and shoved his hands in the pockets of his blazer. His palms were sweaty.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Jess said, eyes on the photographs. Immediately, he regretted his words. How cliché could he possibly sound? Usually, the nerves didn’t affect his mouth. But not around Ella.
Though she startled on the inside, Ella didn’t visibly jump. Instead, she cracked a small smile. “And yet, here I am.”
“Didn’t expect to see you.”
“Well,” she said, shrugging, “I’m full of surprises.”
“Stealing my line, huh, Stevens?” he asked.
Still, they hadn’t turned to face each other.
“Funny, I didn’t know you had the trademark,” she quipped.
“Touché,” he said, feigning disappointment.
Smile growing, Ella finally turned to him. “Never thought I’d see Jess Mariano in a suit jacket.”
His hair was cut differently, parted and combed. Not as unkempt as it had once been. He had dark, shadowy stubble on his cheeks. Just as any brooding writer would. Underneath his black jacket, he wore a t-shirt with a black-and-white photo of  a little girl smoking a cigarette on a beach. Ella thought she recognized it from one of her art classes, but couldn’t quite place it.
Chuckling under his breath, Jess built up his courage and faced her. “Yeah, well, I guess corporate America finally got to me.”
“I don’t know. I think this place feels pretty counterculture,” she said, eyes flicking around the room again. “Might as well be in the Haight-Ashbury.”
“Coming from you, I feel like that’s meant to be an insult,” he said.
“Trust me, it’s not,” Ella replied, with more sincerity than he was prepared for. Before he could interject with some deflection, she continued on. “I mean...this place. It really feels like you. And the book. It was...fuck, Jess, you’re really too smart for your own good.”
He shook his head, blushing and refusing to meet her gaze. Ella Stevens was still the only person who made him blush nearly every time he spoke to her. “I don’t know. If I could do it again, everything would be different.”
Ella scoffed. “C’mon, Mariano, you and I both know how amazing it is.”
“Whatever you say, Stevens,” he said shyly.
“I’ll keep complimenting you until you accept that you’re a kickass author, who I can definitely tell has a beatnik fetish,” she warned, mock severity crossing her features.
Jess rolled his eyes. “Fine. Thank you, Eleanor.”
“You’re so very welcome,” she replied, eyes alight with a teasing, mischievous glint. But, underneath, Jess could tell how genuine she really was. It made his heart ache for her.
After a moment of awkward pause, charged air, Jess pointed a thumb over his shoulder to the table with the refreshments. “You want a beer?”
Ella shook her head. “No thanks. I don’t really drink.”
“Hm,” Jess hummed, eyes narrowing just a touch. The way she’d said it, he could tell there was more. He knew why she didn’t drink. He remembered her father smelling of liquor on Thanksgiving day. And he remembered how upset she’d been the morning after she stole her father’s tequila. Nostalgia washed over him in a wave, and he was relieved when she took the initiative and spoke again.
“And,” she said, gaining a lighter tone once again, “I’m not of legal age yet, anyway.”
“Oh, well, I certainly couldn’t break the law,” Jess said with a furrowed brow. He was always forgetting he was ten months her senior. She had always seemed older.
“Right,” she said, nodding along, “you wouldn’t dream of it.”
Again, an uncomfortable pause began. It made Ella want to grimace. Things had never been so awkward with the two of them, not even when they’d first met. It had always been easy, without the world complicating things for them. Her eyes did another quick sweep of the room.
“Have you seen Luke and April?” she asked.
Jess nodded. “Yeah, you just missed them. They had to get back to the field trip, I think.”
Ella nodded back in acknowledgement, though she immediately felt her heartbeat quicken. The idea of Luke and April being there as a kind of safety net was half the reason she’d been brave enough to come. But, she’d had a morning shift at the diner, and the traffic had made it so she had shown up only twenty minutes before the end of the open house. All of a sudden, she felt silly for thinking they would still be there. Silly for showing up at all. In the note, he’d said she wasn’t obligated at all. Why had she come again? At the moment, the panicked thoughts were too loud for her to focus on anything else.
“But Luke was here long enough to complain about all the abstract paintings and the spoken word performances,” Jess continued, noticing Ella try to grab for a necklace she wasn’t wearing, and instead fiddle with a lock of her hair. In all the time he had known her, he had never once seen her without the key hanging from her neck. Not even in bed. But he knew better than to ask about it.
Ella’s smile returned, though it was not altogether convincing. “Sounds like him. I think one of the few areas of agreement between the two of you is a natural aversion to poetry.”
Jess shrugged. “I don’t know. I might finally be coming around.” Then, he saw Chris approaching, and felt himself relax. Someone else to act as a buffer. He wasn’t quite ready for the words creeping up his throat, begging to get out. “But, my friend Chris is the real poetry guy. He hires all the acts.”
He gestured for Chris to come over. Ella raised her eyebrows at the man, tall and blonde and grinning widely. A hyper energy practically radiated off of him. She could tell why he was the one on the business end of things.
“Chris, this is Eleanor,” Jess said. “She’s an old friend.”
“Hey.” She extended her hand. “You can call me Ella.”
Somehow, Chris’s smile grew larger as they shook hands. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” she replied amiably, as their hands broke from each other.
“You have a very firm handshake,” Chris commented, towering over her. Jess was tall, but this guy made Ella feel like a Polly Pocket figurine.
She snorted a chuckle. “Um, thanks. Guess those steroids are really paying off.”
Jess smirked. Sometimes, he thought Chris was to him as Lane was to Ella. Chris laughed, tickled at her wicked humor, as he called it, but soon his expression grew earnest again.
“Well, it’s good to finally put a face on the famous Eleanor,” Chris said.
“I’m famous?” Ella asked, titing a teasing nod at Jess, who blushed but didn’t have time to explain before Chris cut in again.
“Anyway, I just wanted to let you know the magazine interview went alright. I’m gonna go catch up with the beat poet and make sure everything’s squared away,” Chris told Jess.
Nodding, Jess glared slightly at his friend, unable to hide his irritation. Chris said once again how nice it was to meet Ella before disappearing back into the central swarm of people, though it was slowly dissipating. The afternoon light outside was slowly morphing from bright to dusky. Evening would soon fall.
Smirking, Ella faced Jess again. He made a pointed effort to avoid her gaze, panic rising up in his throat.
“What is it, Stevens?” he asked, sighing slightly.
She cleared her throat, biting on her bottom lip for a moment. “Nothing. Just didn’t realize I was famous around here.”
He rolled his eyes, embarrassed. “Well, I did dedicate my book to you.”
For whatever reason, the comment caught her off-guard. They both knew he had dedicated it to her. But, she couldn’t help but think about how before, Jess would have never been able to admit such a gesture out loud. Hell, at seventeen Jess couldn’t even admit fixing the toaster in the diner for Luke.
“Yeah,” she said slowly, searching for a witty remark but coming up empty. “Yeah, you did, James Dean.”
He faltered for just a moment. She had come, she had called him James Dean. It was confusing, but nonetheless, wonderful. Still, he knew there was no use in getting his hopes up. He would never have her again, he reminded himself. Furrowing her brows, Ella watched his expression fade from a smirk to a small, sad smile. Jess ran a hand over his mouth and tossed an anxious glance over his shoulder before taking a big breath in and blowing it out through his nose.
“Are you nervous?” she asked suddenly, face softening.
Jess nodded self-consciously.
“You don’t have to be, Jess. It’s just me,” she shrugged, gesturing down at herself humbly.
Regaining a touch of composure, Jess raised his eyebrows. “I don’t know. You’ve got bangs and tattoos. New shoes. Doesn’t look quite like my Daria.”
Ella broke into a full grin, and a warmth swelled in her chest like she hadn’t felt in such a long time. Something shifted within her. For a moment, she worried her eyes would fill with tears. But, instead, she only uttered a breathy chuckle. “Don’t worry. I think I’ll always be your Daria.”
Swallowing thickly, Jess echoed her laugh. Then, he looked over his shoulder again, only partly because he wanted to hide his face. He couldn’t risk her seeing hope flash across his expression. “Can I show you something?”
“Sure,” she said, nodding.
Gently, he grabbed her hand and led her through the crowd of young creatives. The room smelled like weathered books and hot ink. An eclectic variety of bohemian rugs covered the blue tile floor. Maybe it was a little more colorful than she would have initially guessed, but Jess truly looked like he belonged there. People waved and nodded greetings at him as they passed, Jess reciprocating shyly each time. It was refreshing. She had never seen him so in his element before. Something about the way he held himself, confident and relaxed. His hand was warm and familiar.
Eventually, they made it to the far wall, near the staircase and next to the small stage area. A few people sat around on the cushions and beanbags, drinking their beers and writing in small moleskine notebooks. She wanted to snort and roll her eyes at them, but she was simply too happy. The anxiety which had been so nauseating as she hesitated at the door was almost completely forgotten. Because Jess was excited to see her. He had taken her hand. When he disentangled their fingers, he gestured to the wall, with a collection of small frames.
As her eyes roamed over the framed sketches, it took her only a moment to recognize them. They were hers. Nine pictures, all those she’d given to Jess over the years. Jess’s car with skeletons in the seats, a screaming woman, a garden filled with snakes. Others she’d handed him in shining moments, lying together in bed, on shift at the diner, sitting in the gazebo with her head on his shoulder. And, in the center, the Hudson River. Drawn on Mother’s Day four years earlier, as they sat together on a dirty hill and escaped reality for just one day.
Before she could hold them back, tears stung her hazel eyes. Beside the arrangement of drawings, she saw a small, printed index card stuck to the wall.
Eleanor Stevens
Nine Untitled Sketches
Not For Sale
She breathed out a flabbergasted scoff, the ghost of a smile on her lips when she turned back to Jess. He smirked fondly at the look of pleasant surprise on her face. For a fleeting moment, she looked younger. Innocent in a way she so rarely was, shocked and alive. He missed that look, but hardly realized until he saw it again.
“Jess, I…” she said breathlessly, shaking her head in disbelief and facing the sketches again. Eventually, she gathered herself and found her words. “I had no idea you saved these.”
“Of course I did,” he said, shrugging as though it were obvious. “I knew they’d be worth millions someday.”
She snorted a laugh. “Not likely.”
“I’m serious, Stevens. People have been asking about these. But I didn’t want to set a price on them or anything, since I didn’t have your input,” Jess explained, eyes on her as she stared at her own past work.
Ella felt as though she might explode, almost too moved to bear. She sniffed and blinked harshly, unwilling to let the tears actually spill over, especially in public. Her hands were shaking at her sides, and she began wringing them together in front of her.
A few astonished giggles escaped her, and she shook her head a final time before she looked back at Jess. He had grown up, and so had she. But as she locked eyes with him, she felt seventeen again, could practically hear the Interpol song playing in her head. The urge to kiss him came over her, made her skin feel tingly and electric. She swallowed harshly, letting the thoughts fade in her mind. As if he had waited all this time for her. He would surely have a girlfriend. Someone who actually liked Hemingway, who could dance, who didn’t have a sailor’s mouth and a broken family.
“I don’t know what to say.” She fought the urge to bite at her nails.
Jess laughed quietly. “I didn’t think that was possible.”
She rolled her eyes at his teasing half-heartedly.
“You don’t have to say anything. I was the one who wanted to say thank you. For everything. I couldn’t have done any of this if I hadn’t met you,” he told her. Jess surprised even himself by being able to maintain eye contact with her.
“You definitely could have,” Ella said resolutely.
He smirked. “No use in arguing with you, I know. So we can agree to disagree but…”
Pausing, Jess sighed and ran a hand over his mouth again. He glanced behind him, and could see Chris and Matthew pretending they hadn’t been staring at the exchange as they bid people goodbye. There were only a few others left milling around. Jess still almost couldn’t believe Ella was standing right in front of him. For two years, he’d imagined what he would say. But, as usual, the sight of her was staggering. Her hazel gaze pierced his scarred heart and immediately all the scripts he’d written disappeared from his head.
“Look, do you...we’re going out for drinks after. Me and Chris and Matthew, the other guy we own this place with. I know drinking isn’t your thing, though I wasn’t planning on getting wasted anyway, and I don’t know when you have to go back but...do you wanna come? We can catch up?” he asked, hesitant.
Her small smile spread to a grin, and the dimple shone in her freckled cheek. “Sure, Mariano. I’d love to.”

What about Billy not used to being in a safe environment so whenever Hop starts getting frustrated Billy sort of just... shows up ready to get hit. And it doesn’t really register to Hopper that it’s happening until Billy just snaps at him one day that he can take it, but can’t handle the waiting game for the hit to finally come.
I’m gonna start sobbing don’t dO THIS except please do bc i love breaking my own heart and then mending it back together ♥ ♥ ♥
It takes Billy a long long long time to get comfortable in Hop’s cabin and one of the biggest reasons is that Hop does his very hardest to make Billy comfortable. Hop doesn’t give Billy any reason to fear coming home. Hop is aware of what happened in Billy’s past and tries to understand the horrors of what he went through but he learns more and more every day and every day he tries harder and harder to be more patient, more constructive, more understanding. And it’s sweet, it’s so fucking sweet, but Billy just doesn’t understand it and so he waits. He waits for it to get bad and he expects it and he really hurts his heart by doing it but he just can’t help it.
And not to get too personal, but I know a lot of the people who talk about Billy also talk about their own abuse that they’ve been through, so i’m gonna join in here. And while i’ve never been physically abused, i’ve been emotionally abused basically my whole life and was very heavily emotionally and mentally abused for a couple of years and let me tell you: the waiting was the worst fucking part for me. My abuser went from treating me horribly for about 2 weeks at a time to then pretending like everything was perfectly fine for a day or two. And that went on for 2 years. And the absolute worst part for me was the waiting. The days when things seemed to get better but you just know in your heart it’s going to get bad again. They’re going to hate you again for seemingly no reason and they’ll refuse to give you a reason and every day that it’s “better” is a reminder that it’s going to feel that much worse when it inevitably gets bad again and wow that fucking sucks. To the point where you start to wish it would just stay bad forever bc that’s better than being tricked into a false sense of security.
And that’s what I think Billy would feel when moving in with Hopper. Every day that it’s good is a reminder of everything that was bad and it all feels like a horrible trick is being played. And at first Billy is real reserved and calm and kind of emotionless when he’s at Hop’s cabin bc he’s not trying to stir the pot, he’s just trying to sleep under a roof and that’s basically it. It’s not until he actually gets adopted and moves in that he starts to wait for it. Like, really wait for it. Like, when he gets home from school some days he’ll sit on the couch for hours with the TV on in front of him and a blank stare on his face, not seeing a damn thing just sitting there picturing everything going to hell. Sitting there and waiting for Hop to come home and explode. And it feels like someone has a heavy hand around his heart and is squeezing just enough to make him feel like it’s going to burst. There’s so much pressure in his chest. He wants to scream.
And sometimes he does. He starts to. He kicks the couch or the wall or the table or the dresser and he screams and throws a fucking fit, basically, and he looks to Hop who just…… looks tired. Whose eyebrows are knitted like Neil’s would be but who just sighs and raises his voice a little bit but only loud enough so Billy can hear him over all of his own yelling. So Hop can tell him he’s going to take away his toys. Like his car, or his tv privileges.
Billy will get drunk and Hop will make sure he’s physically alright before punishing him. Billy stays out too late and Hop is stern and strict but never lays a hand on him. Billy flinches out of habit when Hop goes to touch him and it doesn’t take long before Hop stops doing it. And Billy isn’t stupid, he watches as Hop begins to treat him like a scared animal, and Billy really wants it to piss him off more than it does. But in reality, it makes him feel kind of… cared for?
But that scares Billy more. Every day that goes by is a day where he’s forced to lean a little further out over the edge but is just waiting to be pushed. It’s so much. It’s too, too much. He’s going to go insane waiting.
So he incites it.
He’s had a beer or two but he’s more drunk on his anxiety and fear and stress than anything else so when Hop gets home Billy sits there and lets the man say hi and ask if he wants anything specific from the grocery store because he’ll be going tomorrow and “if you have time and wanna come, you can do that too” and-
And Billy is going crazy. He’s a shaken up soda bottle. He’s a firework that failed to launch. He’s got so much pressure inside of him his ears are whistling with it like a kettle screaming in the morning and he stands himself up and stares Hop down and his eyes are red from where the tears threatened and he’s screaming: “Just fucking do it already!”
Hop blinks.
“Wha-?”
“What the fuck are you waiting for? What are you, a pussy? Think I’m a pussy? Because I can fucking handle it. What I can’t handle is all of this waiting around! So just fucking get it over with, goddamnit!”
And Hop is…. Confused as all hell. Blinking and hands itching to rub at his eyes to check if this is all a dream.
“Do what?” Hop asks.
“Hit me!” Billy yells. “Just fucking hit me! I can’t…. I can’t do this! This is fucking worse! You sadistic motherfucker, just get it over with and hit me!”
“Billy I’m-”
“Don’t give me that bullshit! I know you’re dying to! I’m- I’ve been… I’m a brat. I’m rude and I break shit and I don’t give you respect and you’re just dying to hit me, I can tell, so just fucking do it already!”
And Billy’s hands are twitching, looking to punch someone himself because there’s too much inside of him. There’s too much of everything inside of him. And he’s watching Hop’s eyes watch him with fear and that same fucking concern that’s always in his eyes and Billy just…. He can’t take this. He’d rather fight than sit here and understand what he’s feeling.
So he stomps over, boots hitting the ground and reaches his hands out to shove Hop.
“What, do you need some more reasons?” He asks, shoving Hop again. Hop just lets it happen, stumbling back a bit. Billy begins to punch at him, landing a few on his chest but they’re weaker than he wants bc he’s tired and confused and honestly freaked out at the thought of actually hurting this man and wow that’s kind of a new feeling.
And Hop is…. Speechless. He lets Billy hit him. He watches the boy tire himself out. He briefly thinks of the bruises he’ll probably have in the morning. The boy gets a solid punch in, but Hop already knew that, bc he’s heard through the town about the fights he gets in.
Billy’s just standing there, breathing heavy bc he’s winded. He feels tired and sick and so winded and he flinches hard when Hop puts a hand on his shoulder but Hop doesn’t pull away this time. In fact, he doubles down and puts his other hand on Billy’s other shoulder.
“Son-”
“Stop calling me that.” Billy mumbles but Hop shakes his head.
“Son.” He doubles down. He’s gonna keep doubling down. This shit is too much for him to watch and not say something about. “You… I’m not going to hit you. I’m never going to hit you.”
Billy grumbles. Squirms.
“I can fucking handle it you jackass-”
“The point isn’t that you can handle it, the point is that you never should have had to learn to handle it in the first place. Don’t you get it? You didn’t deserve what you got before. You didn’t deserve any of that, alright?” Billy is still squirming, eyes squeezed shut, water in the corners as he tries desperately to get away but Hop refuses. “Damnit kid, will you listen to me?? You didn’t deserve any of what you got! And that asshole of a man didn’t deserve you!”
And Billy feels the sob pull itself out of his chest and up through his throat and his face flushes bc of it. Bc he’s embarrassed. Bc he can’t believe he’s crying to this man right now but this is his… this is his dad, isn’t it?
“I just…. I know it’s… I know. I know you want to-”
“What I want is for you to drink some water, eat some food, and get some rest. I’m not going to hurt you.”
“But-”
“I promise I won’t let anything hurt you.” Hop says determinedly and incredibly stupidly. Bc it’s a stupid promise to make, it really is. Billy knows it.
“You can’t promise that.”
“Well I just did, so.” Hop is stubborn. Billy lets him be. Billy lets Hop pull him into a tight hug. Billy lets himself feel comfortable in it.

Spop Fic recs (Catradora)
(finally)
Hello Catradora trash can's today I finally give you what I've been promising for MONTHS - a fanfic rec list. Because, if you didn't already know, I read A LOT of Catradora fanfic, probably too much and although I'm definitely not the best judge of...anything, I really wanted to make this post, so here it is, weeks late.
(it's a long one though)
I’ve written my full opinions n shit on like the first 10 multi chapters and one shots because there’s a lot lol, and some I remember better than others (tbf I've re read all of them at this point), but yeahhh. For the others, I’ll describe it in less detail and a bit more jokily lol.
I'm sorry I haven't just linked all the fics bit I just want this to be out of my drafts loll, and I can assure you most of these are pretty easy to find, I apologise for the laziness though haha
Also I’ve tried to find the all the authors tumblr or other social media, but I couldn’t for all of them which sucks, so if you happen to be the author and I left you out, please comment :)
Anyway, Y'ALL NEED TO GET ON MY LEVEL SOOO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO HERE YOU GO:
(here's a key first)
Key:
(o) = ongoing
(f) = finished
[G]=General
[T] =Teen and up Audiences
[M]=Mature
[E]=Explicit
Multi-chapters:
1. Upper West Side by ceruleanstorm (o) 100,000+ words
@princessofgayskull
[Modern AU] [T]
This fic is so amazing!! It goes so deep into their psychology and past and damn is it hilarious at time. Also, I love the premise of it - Catra is a Uber driver and Adora ends up as her passenger. It's a fairly slowburn as it goes deep into the two girls' lives and really gives time for the relationship to develop naturally and that is honestly really appreciated because it makes the good moments between the two even better and more rewarding if I'm honest. A lot of angst though. All the other characters we know and love are also written amazingly in it too, and are made equally important. All in all, I love this fic and everything about it!
As of writing it has fairly infrequent updates, but each chapter is 10-20k+ words and has 9/12 chapters so...there’s a lot.
2. For my Sake by doublepasse (f) 100,000+ words
@doublepasse-writes
[Canon Compliant][E]
The story and world building is just - WOAH. This one is quite the slowburn but boy is it worth it. It's set a couple months to a year after season one, where Catra finally captures Adora but the tables turn very quickly when capturing her nearly results in her death, which Catra (unsurprisingly) didn’t want. The story has some BIG plot twists and is definitely one of the best canon universe Catradora fics I’ve ever read and the ending was very satisfying, but also open ended, BECAUSE there’s a part 2 coming and I couldn’t be more excited!
(Also, there is one chapter with nsfw content in it, but it has a sfw version)
3. Skinny Love by Maychup (o) 89,000+ words
@maychup
[Canon Compliant][M]
Another amazing fic that takes place in the canon universe that has such great world building, and is very plot heavy. It takes place days after the S1 finale and goes from there basically. The premise of it is similar to many fics and one shots you’ve probably read - sleeping with the enemy. From the first chapter it seemed like it could have easily been a five chapter easy redemption fic but nooooooo, it goes a lot LOT deeper. I feel like this fic did such a great job on character development, Catra’s specifically, she grows so much throughout the fic. She is also such a mother to all her Horde pals in this and I love that haha.
At the time of writing, it’s still ongoing, and boy am I excited to see where it goes. It’s also super angsty and has a fair-ish amount of smut so be warned!
4. The Heiress and The thief by Fuhadeza (f) 58,000+ words
@fuhadeza
[Regency AU][M]
As it says in the fic summary, it is literally the She-Ra regency AU I never knew I wanted likeeee, it’s so good! Premise - Adora is taken by Lady Brightmoon, leaving her boarding school, and her best friend behind, Catra, and everything is fine until her old friend face resurfaces. This one had me screaming at times (most of them did, but this especially). It was a really enjoyable read and I honestly loved the way the author dealt with love and the way Adora dealt with her feelings and just ahhh- read it.
5. Faded with feelings by yesimgay (f) 24,000+ words
[Roomates AU][T]
This fic. I read this a WHILEEE ago but to this day this is one of my favourite fan-fics ever like it’s hilarious, and fluffy and unproblematic and sometimes you need that tbh. Everything you need to know is established in the first chapter but the way it is done feels so natural, as if it’s just Adora‘s or Catra’s thoughts and I love it. Also the premise is GREAT - Catra has ADHD and smokes weed to help with it, and Adora accidentally takes an edible, which is when shenanigans start to ensue.
6. Dream of Me by DBsean (f) 18,000+ words
[Canon Universe][T]
Although it is on the shorter side with only five chapters, this was another fic that was so so good in quality and premise. For whatever reason, Catra and Adora start sharing dreams, enabling them to share moments together that they (unfortunately) can't have in real life, due to them being on opposite sides of the war, and in turn - enemies. The angst in this fic literally KILLED ME, and the characters dialogue is so good as well! I also recommend you check out some of the authors other fics, they're all great!
7. we've been making shades of purple out of red and blue by darklady21(o) 19,000+ words
[Roomates AU][M]
Another Roomates AU, bUT instead of being best friends, the two barely know each other, or interact at all...GREAT RIGHT?!? Honestly though, I think the author did a great job in making it not seem too rushed, especially in the setup and establishing how although they know each other, they DONT know each other, so the first couple chapters are basically that stage where they are learning more about each other and leaving stupid post it notes around the house, and it just feels so natural and great! Updates aren’t super regular, but there’s already nine chapters (as of writing) so definitely check it out, as well as their other works too!
8. Razorback by Starr_Reborn(o) 22,000+ words
[Canon Divergence AU][M]
Apparently, the author wrote this with the intent of it being fluffy. From the title you can tell that is NOT the case. At all. This one HURTS. This is very very angsty, and also has some themes of rape in it, so if that kinda thing triggers you I might wanna skip out on this one. It is a really good fic though and stands out from a lot of the others because of the way it is written. Chapters aren’t usually longer that 1000 words and the writing style is quite disjointed at times, and it a lot of the time a stream of consciousness. At times it can even be a little confusing or hard to follow, but I find it makes it even more interesting, and also means it will probably be a fic I come back to once completed. It is genuinely so unpredictable, I have no clue where it’s going, but I really love it for that!
9. Sunflower by TechnoSkittles (f) 6000+ words
@technoskittles
[High School AU][G]
Oh, BOY. Oh boyyy. This fic - it's 8 chapters and only 6000 words yet the story is just- Ahhh READ IT. It's so good! And like the author in general is so amazing at writing like check out all their works (especially their latest one shot omg I loved it). Anyway, read this, it's not too long, it's cute and also genuinely surprising, the ending was not something I saw coming AT ALL, so YEAH!
10. I like me better when I'm with you by lesbians_harold(f) 22,000+ words
@lesbians-harold
[High School AU][T]
Just a nice, fun, fluffy high school, friends to lovers AU. Catra moves to Adora’s school senior year and the twos friendship is quickly rekindled, after a rocky start albeit. Adora is a big ol’ jock and Catra draws which is a headcanon I LOVE. It’s written so well, and the characters are also written well too! It is a lil angsty at times, but not to worry - but it does pay off, I assure you.
11. I thought we were best friends by vanilla107 (o) 45,000+ words
@vanilla107
[University AU][T]
Breakups. Lots of breakups, and angst. This one will mend your heart then hurt you. BE SCARED. But go read it. I mean it. It's good!
12. Dirty Dancing by LilLegalLoli94 (o) 9000+ words
@lillegalloli94
[Dancing AU][M]
Basically lots of (sexual) tension after years of not seeing each other because Adora moved to Brightmoon Dance Academy. It's good. Real good.
13. Back to Black by eveynull (f) 6000+ words
[Canon Universe][T]
(Post War) Gays go and visit their past, staring angst, and featuring your favourite co-star - fluff!
14. how things are supposed to be by maggiesbombshell (o) 11,000+ words
@yeunslegacy
[High School AU][M]
A jolly slowburn that will hurt your soul because (internalised) homophobia and gay.
15. Some things you don't see coming by Trashibesensei (o) 20,000+ words
[High School AU][T]
Adora being a big ol' jock, and Catra being a big ol' gay. I’m not even gonna explain it, you have to find that out yourself.
16. A quarter after three by Maychup (o) 11,000+ words
@maychup
[Youtuber AU][M]
Adora's gay panic settles in when she bumps into her childhood bestie, Catra, live streaming in the streets of LA. My favourite part of this fic has to be the YouTube comments she gets. This one will make you laugh. And go AWWW CUTE.
17. A Song to My Heart by DemiRebel (f) 8000+ words
[Neighbors AU][G]
The cute girl next door keeps singing loud, and it sounds BELLE, so what else would you do other than creepily listen?? 10/10 for premise.
18. Occupied by Nny11 4000+ words
@nny11writes
[Modern AU][T]
The most hilarious soulmate AU I've read tbh. One word - bathrooms.
19. Whispering Dreams by dragonesdepapel (f) 7400+ words
[Canon Universe][T]
Adora finds a wounded and sick gay so obviously, she helps her out, much to her protesting. This fic will honestly make you go through the five stages of grief. Big ol' oof.
20. Why you SHOULD bring in your untrained cat to the rebellion by locuas (f) 6800+ words
[Canon Divergence AU][G]
This fic is a literal joke. But it will probably be the best crack you will ever read, so. READ IT.
ALSO HERES A LIL SELF PWOMO OF MY MULTI CHAP:
What drove her insane, 13,000+ words (f)
One shots:
1. hang tight (all you) by TechnoSkittles 9000+ words
@technoskittles
[High School AU][T]
This is a fic that will break your heart and mend it. It's about Adora coming to terms with her sexuality throughout high school in a pretty unsupportive environment, added onto the fact she has a crush on her best friend. It's paced so well, nothing feels rushed and although it's only 9000 words, it manages to flesh out characters that aren't even in the show, and it obviously does a great job with the topic at hand - sexuality and homophobia. Like it honestly touched my heart, reading it I genuinely wanted to cry. I loved everything about it, from the moment it started to the last line. It's just written in a way that is probably relatable to so many people who are or have struggled with coming to terms with themselves, and shows how for some it's really not an easy thing. It's also written beautifully, and I PROMISE you won't regret reading this! Definitely check out some more of their works too, they're all great reads!
2. you're my favorite song (and it's stuck in my head) by artemiswords 16,000+ words
@artemisbye
[High School AU][T]
A belle valentine's day fan fic which I just,, ahhhhh this is some of the best 16k words I've ever read, it's so nice and fluffy! Premise - Catra has to take the bus to school, and ends up sitting next to this cute girl on the bus, Adora, and listening to TayTay (Swift), sharing earphones with this complete stranger. Obviously, Catra develops a crush, but she is sure Adora is straight. It's written so well, and is such an enjoyable read, with so many great moments and dialogue. Music is a very prevalent theme (which you can tell from the name tbh) in it, and the amount of song references in it also make it feel so fleshed out in a way, like their both just teenagers with somewhat questionable music taste. Just all the exchanges they have are great, especially the ones over text and social media, there were so many funny moments too. DEFO, recommend if you wanna read something nice and lighthearted!
3. The Interlude That Never Ends by FMLClexa 2000+ words
Twitter: catrxs
[Historical AU] [M]
Angst. Quite angsty. But also fairly fluffy, it has a good balance. And the writing style is just so - it gets your heart wrenching despite being fairly short, and is also very poetic, and I don't know about you, but I love things like that! The fic is a historical/soulmates AU where they are bound to fall in love, no matter the period they're reincarnated in. It's one of the most creative fic ideas I've ever read, and the concept is executed so well, which makes it even better. And it's, so so damn sweet ahh, read it read it READ IT!
4.  is there a knife in your bed or are you just happy to see me? by ceruleanstorm 6000+ words
@princessofgayskull
[Canon Universe][T]
This fic was everythinggg, it is so cute, like it’s basically 6k words of fluff! Also, if you didn’t already notice, the title (and the fic) heavily references the fact Adora keeps a knife under her bed (I DIED when that happened in s2).  Set post war, Catra sneaks away from her post to visit an overworked and stressed Adora in Bright Moon and cuteness ensues. I honestly just love everything about this fic, we need more fluffy and funny fics like this! The dynamic the two have in this is perfect and the dialogue and general writing style of it is great! And Adora’s internal dialogue in this honest to god had me dead. Needless to say this is one of my fav Canon Universe one shots.
5.Girl’s Become Lovers (Who Turn Into Mothers) by A_Zap 2000+ words
@azapofinspiration
[Canon Universe][G]
This has to be one of the cutest, well written, fic I’ve read! Catra brings home the only survivors from a tragedy her and Scorpia stumbled upon, but one thing Adora doesn’t expect is for them to be children. The,, emotions in this are so raw and powerful. Even though they obviously have these new little people in their life though, their problems don’t just go away, they still have their own issues, and have to deal with them while looking after these kids. In general they handle mental health so well, and Shadow Weavers lasting effect on Catra SHOWS and it shows hard. Honestly, it made me want to cry at some parts and the ending was EVERYTHING, so reAd IT.
6. baby, i'm a house on fire (and i wanna keep burning) by wittchers 7000+
@huremsultan
[Medival AU]
A really fun fic to read, with a very original premise: after the Horde defeats the kingdom Bright Moon, Hordak is crowned, Queen Angella was killed, and Princess Glimmer is missing, which leaves Lady Adora forced into an arranged marriage with Lord Catra, to keep her people happy. Obviously, being an arranged marriage, with her enemy, she ain’t too happy about it, nor is Catra. But they have to put up with it, and each other. Honestly, like the development of their relationships is sooo good, and there is the perfect balance e of angst and fluff (if you can call it that?) so don’t worry it won’t kill you! Like ahh, the emotions in this - so well described with so little words. And the ending is great, in general it’s great!
7. Adora Casts: Zone of Truth by Hemogobbler 2000+ words
@hemogobbler69
[Canon Universe][T]
Literally just 2000 words of utter cuteness and hilarious dialogue haha. Premise - Catra has just defected recently, and is still warming up to Adora, is still slightly shut off from her. So, to try remedy this, she gets a truth serum from Madame Razz, and slips it into their food, leading to them talking honestly about their feelings for the first time in a while. I just love it so much because I feel like this is genuinely something Adora would do, and also something I’d probably do in her situation - Catra opening up is a rare occurrence! Also, as I said, their are some really funny, laugh out loud moments, which out of context are so weird, yet somehow manage to make a lot of sense. Anyway, if you just had a bad day, I think this fic would definitely lift your spirits.
8. bloom by kimah 4000+ words
Twitter: whitehotmoons
[Modern AU][G]
A post break up fan fic where Catra's therapist suggests Catra write down her feelings, which leads her to write the things she hates about Adora, and their interactions they've had since their break up. The way it's written is so... angsty but like, not? I'm bad at this. Literally, reading this I really felt Catra's pain, and I just wanted to give her a hug at times. Adora too. The small details the author outs into the characters makes the characters all that more realisitic too, and I love it! Seriously though, the angst, will, get, you.
9. I do adore by thankskelley 6000+ words
Twitter: cosmicsporks
[Modern AU][G]
A Catradora fake dating AU. Is there anything more you need in life? Catra and Adora are are roomates, and one day, Adora bursts in, saying she finally came out to her parents, and also that her parent had assumed they are dating... leading her to ask if Catra could pretend to be her girlfriend for while. What could possibly go wrong? Hmm?? I've always loved the whole fake dating premise (to all the boyss) and with characters like Adora and Catra, (especially Catra like she is a TEASE) I always thought it'd be great. Who doesn't love oblivious gays? Their dynamic in this is also great, especially all the flirting and teasing. BUT, of course, it also a bit angsty too. I can promise you you'll love it!
10. Chocolate and Roses vs. Heartache by Trashibesensei 9000+ words
[High School AU][T]
Another high school AU...I know I have a problem leave me alone. This time, if you couldn’t tell by the title, there’s some heartache involved, because: this Valentines Day, Adora doesn’t spend it with her best friend (now ex bestie) Catra. Even despite her popularity that she now has due to being the star player of Bright Moon’s soccer team, she can’t shake of how much she yearns for her old friend. Somehow, even with all the angst, it is still sO fucking FUNNY, the way Mermista was written was great, and she had some of THE best lines. But yeah, it’s so pure and just - Catra needs a hug, Adora needs a hug, they need to hug EACH other tbh! It had a very nice and hopeful message, and also kinda surprised me with the end.
11. someone you like by caela 5000+ words
[High School AU][T]
As a gen z, or x, or whatever the fuck I am, I always appreciate a fic where the characters say stupid shit over Instagram to their crushes which results it getting a date to prom. Although I can assure you that would never happen to me. But this So FUCKING cute and funny so READ.
12. this is what it's like when we collide (this is how you bring me back to life) by azul (7daysoftorture) 5000+ words
@bluelipgloss
[Canon Universe][G]
This galaxy brain fic is amazing and that’s ThE TEA. Catra gets a wish stone from Hordak and we all knowww, WHO she (subconsciously) craves - Adora, which obviously leads to hell breaking loose, because, disaster gays. Anyway read this it’s great and made me feel forget about the cruel world we live in.
13. Five Times Catra was a Cat and One Time the Cat was Catra by sunscreams 2400+ words
@catradoramma
[Canon Universe][T]
A BELLE, well written 5 + 1 which is just pure fluff (some hurt/comfort too) and Catra being Catra (so a loveable pain in the ass) after joining Adora in Bright Moon.
14. Vital Signs by SereneKarma 2000+ words
@serene-karma
[Modern AU][G]

Bump in the road.
~Shawn Mendes~
~Inspired by me travelling 14 hours over the past two days... And, y'know, imagination starts going!!~
Tumblr media
"Shawn we're not fucking doing this now, okay?" You raise your voice for the first time since he'd got here - until now, you'd feared the other people in your flat hearing your argument. Now, you were on your last nerve.
"Then when are we doing it?" He drops your bag of toiletries to the bed and focuses directly on you, "The next time I catch that guy flirting with you, or maybe when he tries to kiss you?"
"Would you relax?!" You exclaim, forgetting about the suitcase in front of you to instead direct your words solely at him, "He's my flatmate. We live together. He does a similar course to me. And that's it! There's nothing going on and, anyway, he likes someone else,"
Shawn scoffs and shakes his head, "And then she rejects him and he needs a shoulder to cry on?"
"Yeah, maybe, and it will be a friendly gesture for me to be there for him," You state coldly, calculating each of your words as though you were speaking to a child, "Now, I'm going to finish packing my things up, say goodbye to everyone and then I'll meet you in the car,"
"At least let me help you finish packi-"
"Shawn," You cut your boyfriend off, "Go,"
This wasn't how your second year of university was supposed to end. As you came to the end of the last semester, you were also coming to the end of living in this flat. So, your boyfriend had offered to take the long drive over here to help you pack up and then you could do the roadtrip back together. How romantic, no? Well, you'd have hoped so. Instead, Shawn had caught eye of Jason, whom you had lived with over the past semester amongst the rest of the group also in this flat. And your boyfriend became quickly possessive - instantly assuming the worst. A trait you despised when it got like this.
"Hey honey, I'm just leaving! My parents are here," Shelly sticks her head round the corner of your door, a grin plastered across her painted lips.
"Have an amazing summer," You force a grin, wrapping her into a big hug which you think you definitely needed more than she did.
"You too, girl," She pulls back, hands resting on your arms, "And don't let Shawn ruin anything! I sort of heard you two earlier,"
"No, no, he won't ruin anything," You shake your head, feeling sick to your stomach whenever anyone spoke badly of him, "He's just- I don't know, it's difficult,"
She nods and squeezes your hands once more before hurrying out with her bags to go and meet her parents.
Taking one final scan around your room, you zip up both suitcases and close the window - taking a deep breath. You were still pissed at Shawn and he had to know that. Although, with an eight hour journey ahead, you dreaded how thick the tension would be.
~~~
As soon as you're walking towards the car, in sight through the wing mirror, Shawn hops out of the Jeep to help you load your stuff into the trunk.
You smile lightly as a forced thank you before clambering into the passenger seat.
"Ready to go?" He begins as he gets back into the driver's side.
You turn to face him and see he has all appearance of innocence on his features. And, today, it irritates you.
"Let's not act like we're normal S. You were out of line back then," You state, certain of your stance now that it was only you two in the car - no prying ears of your flatmates.
"I was out of line?" He scoffs, forcing offense to be taken on his face, "You're the one flirting with some random guy when I'm stood right there! I fucking dread to think what you do when you're free of me,"
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" You raise your voice louder than his, "So, what? You think I'm cheating on you now?"
"I didn't say you were-"
"You know I would never, ever, do something like that to you. To anyone for that matter," You say with bitter tone, "Don't you ever accuse me of something like that. I can't believe you would think so low of me,"
"(Y/n), come on, don't be like this," Shawn sighs, "I just-"
"Just drive, Shawn," You comment, clicking your seatbelt into place and focusing your watery eyes on the stationary road ahead of you.
He opens and closes his mouth a couple of times as though he's trying to find any words to say, or maybe trying to take back his previous ones.
But it's futile. And, soon, he shifts the Jeep into gear and starts driving with nothing but silence between you.
~~~
You're out of the city of your university and driving down roads that look like the typical setting for any roadtrip. There are mountains and concrete and the shadows of sun poking through the clouds. Utterly picturesque. But you still felt uneasy. The car journey so far had been utterly silent besides the radio playing far too quietly and the occasional mutterings from Shawn about drivers that were irritating him a little - something that only annoyed him when he was already pissed off or upset.
You take the opportunity to close your eyes, no real intention of falling asleep. Though you were tired. Tired of looking at your boyfriend and seeing his mouth move in raised volume. Tired of seeing him after all these weeks and being met with something you'd rather shut away for a lot longer than a semester. It felt tedious and ridiculous to think that the boy you loved was the source of such petty issues.
And, before you knew it, you found yourself drifting into a slumber that you didn't realise your mind desired so much.
~~~
By the time you awoke, sun was setting over... Wherever this was. The trees swayed nonchalantly, parting only to show brief glimpses of the blinding sun behind them. You were leaning against the door of the Jeep, one arm tucked beside your head and the other... The other by your side, hand intertwined with Shawn's. His large hand was settled on your seat, fingers locked gently with yours and his thumb absently brushing over your skin as he hummed to the rhythm of the song on the radio.
You blinked away your seat and sat a little more upright in the chair, "What time is it?" You question groggily, rolling your shoulders to relieve a little of the tension.
Shawn jumps a little and goes to retract his hand, "It's uh... Seven, seven fifteen," He clears his throat and shifts his hand back to the ten and two o'clock position on the steering wheel.
"You haven't had a break?" You frown, hand feeling oddly empty now he wasn't in contact with you.
"No, I thought you'd just want to get home quickly," He says, shaking his head and letting a couple of his untamed curls tickle his forehead.
"Pull over here," You gesture to a nearby petrol station, "You need to give yourself a break,"
He doesn't dispute, pulling over into the far end of the parking lot to stop the car.
"I'm sorry," Shawn sighs, letting his chest rise and fall as he begins, "I'm sorry for a lot of things over the past few months. I'm sorry for being distant whilst I was on tour and not caring enough about your commitments here. I'm sorry I didn't drive to see you on your birthday, I always promise myself I'll see you on your birthday. I'm sorry I've been getting jealous and I'm sorry I snapped at you back then, I know you're just friends with that guy but I just felt a bit overwhelmed and I see how much of a good time you're having there and, God, it's amazing but it's also hard to-"
You shift your hand and let it find his, grateful when they still link together like normal. You let out a breath you'd forgotten you'd ever taken.
"I haven't deserved you for a long time and I think we've lost this recently and I fucking hate it an-" His bottom lip trembles and he tries to shake off his emotion.
"Don't say that Shawn," You say and regret it instantly as it comes out as a croaky whisper, "We've both fucked up and done things we want to regret. I should've come to see you on tour when you felt down, it didn't matter about me being tired or whatever. I should've told you when I was getting stressed and not left it until my Mom called you because she was worried. I shouldn't have snapped back at you for just being a little too protective over some guy."
"We could go round for hours," He comments, "But I think we both know where we've made mistakes,"
You nod and shift to bring your legs up to the chair, pulling your knees to your chest.
"But I think it's made me realise more than ever that I never want to lose this," Shawn shakes his head with a crack in his voice, "I never want to make times like this get the best of us and lose everything we've had since we were sixteen,"
You can't find words good enough now - knowing he was more than likely to say it better than you ever could.
"I think we need to spend the next weeks just-"
"Going back to how things used to be," You finish for him, "I think so too,"
A silence falls between you that doesn't feel tense this time. It feels like that point that you get to with someone where you don't need sound to consolidate the connection between you. Where your surroundings are filled with enough silent noise to avoid any fear of loss.
Shawn leans his head back against the headrest and tilits his face so he is looking at you, "You remember when I first passed my test? I brought you out to the middle of nowhere and we sat on the hood of the car and watched the sunrise. It was the first time I kissed you,"
You smile at the thought and glance outside at the sunset still tickling the sky, instinctively tugging at his hand, "Come on then, let's go,"
He cocks a brow at you and lets a light chuckle dust his chest before letting go of you to step out of the car.
In seconds, you find yourself leaning back against the windscreen, shifting closer and closer to Shawn until your thigh bumps his.
He lets his hand fall into yours and lifts your leg so that you're as much in contact as he can make possible.
You settle your head on his shoulder and wrap your arms around his torso, breathing in the comforting scent of his cologne - one you'd chosen for him and he'd worn ever since. He still has your pendant linked to his necklace from when you'd given it to him before his first tour and, on the hand that tangles into your hair, he still displays the swallow tattoo that you'd designed for him. You'd never lose those little features.
And that's how you stay, longing for the sunset to last a little longer, you wrap yourselves in each other's hold - something your hearts had missed far too much. You let the occasional cars pass and you let the workers at the garage tell you that they're closing and you let the time pass by. But you don't move until you're both sure that this is it. You'd let the dusk fall across this youthful part of your relationship and vow to never get there again. You vow to grow and to learn from each other and be more patient and more willing to compromise. But, most importantly, you vow to never argue before a road trip again... Knowing full well that sort of tension was far too unbearable!
Chapter 2: Mutiny
Tumblr media
Summer was bearing down stronger than ever on the ATEEZ. Wooyoung swept his arm across his sweaty forehead every few minutes for hours on end as he toiled under the hot sun cleaning cannons.
Left and right, sailors were shedding articles of clothing to cool off and eventually Wooyoung gave in and dropped his shirt in the pile.
“Are those ribs I see?” Jongho teased from the forecastle. “We can’t all have your physique, Jongho,” Wooyoung fired back, smirking when their youngest reeled in fake indignation.
“I take offence at that! You certainly could if you joined the morning exercises I invited you to!” Wooyoung was preparing another jab at Jongho when Yunho appeared from the rigging and joined in.
“At least you two have a decent tan! It appears as if my skin hasn’t seen the sun in months.” All the boys laughed at the truth of this statement, but sobered on the arrival of their captain, who was eyeing the pile of shirts.
“Are you quite comfortable, sir?” Wooyoung joked, not expecting a response.
“If you think I trust any of you enough to take off this jacket and put it in the pile, you’re wrong,” Hongjoong put a protective hand on his lapels before returning to the pile. “Do these need mending or are you just overheating in them?”
“Captain, it’s sweltering out here!” Yunho exclaimed. Hongjoong looked up at his master rigger. “While we’re on the subject of mending, do me a favour will you and fetch the flag. There’s a small tear in it I’d like to patch up.”
Yunho laughed and obliged, flying up the ropes with effortless speed and lowering their special flag. Hongjoong took it back to his quarters with a word of thanks and nothing more.
“Does he always sew everything himself?” Wooyoung turned to the other officers. Jongho tilted his head in thought. “Mostly, yes. He taught Seonghwa to patch sails but everything else, he does on his own.” Wooyoung smiled fondly at the back of the retreating captain. “He’s got such a bold sense of style, so uniquely commanding, but what for?”
Jongho laughed wholeheartedly at this. “I’ve no idea, hyung! That’s just what captains do.”
There was rum and dancing after supper that night, but Hongjoong felt unwell and retired early, offering a flippant excuse of heat exhaustion.
For him, the night was long and sleepless. A disquieting sensation had settled inside that he was losing strength, each passing hour sucking more out of him. Somewhere in the back of his mind he knew he was becoming sicker than he’d ever been.
As morning dawned, Hongjoong brought a shaking hand to his forehead and immediately drew it back. His skin was burning at a dangerous temperature and he shifted uncomfortably in his already soaked sheets before giving up and rising to take the morning watch.
The world reeled from the motion of standing and there was a tight pain in his stomach, strong enough that his face was plastered into a grimace. Hongjoong inhaled shakily, trying to clear his mind and return to his work.
He would have to keep it together in front of the crew, construct a façade and hang onto it while he figured out what was going on.
Half a week of clear skies and speedy winds served the crew well and cheered spirits, largely dissolving tensions between sailors new and old. Reassigned to one of Wooyoung’s gun teams, Seunghyun caused no trouble and his unprecedented duel was near forgotten. However, the mistake of one of his lower-rank friends soon became a frigate wide issue.
“He left the food stores unsecured, and now we have a rat problem,” Mingi explained to a distracted Hongjoong.
“I love the life of a pirate! But I hate rats.” Jongho quipped to Wooyoung, unashamed at having overheard a private conversation. Mingi chattered on, already finished with the damage report before he realised he was completely unheeded. “Captain?”
Hongjoong snapped out of it, wide-eyed but desperately trying to create a semblance of attentiveness. “Yes! Rats?”
Mingi squinted at him, and he knew he had been quiet just a moment too long. The ruse was up. “What’s wrong?” Wooyoung and Jongho perked up again from their corner of the quarterdeck, doing their best to appear indifferent, while Hongjoong tried to convince his second in command that everything was fine.
“Maybe you should lie down?” Mingi’s voice was lowered for privacy’s sake but insistent nonetheless.
“It’s nothing! Why don’t we work on the rat problem instead?”
“Come on, Captain, a nap won’t hurt anything!” The words slipped out of Wooyoung’s mouth almost before he was aware. Both captain and quartermaster gaped at him from the helm.
Whoops...
Hongjoong stalked across the deck and drew up just an inch too close to Wooyoung for his liking. “Not a word of this to anyone, do you hear? It’s nothing, but it’ll get blown out of proportion if it reaches the men.” Though tempted to fire back, Wooyoung lowered his head and nodded submissively.
He watched the bright red jacket of his captain retreat, swaying slightly with each step, and turned with a frown to Jongho. “It’s not nothing, we both know that,” he gritted out. Jongho hummed a yes, eyes fixed on Hongjoong. “I don’t think there’s anything we can do, though. Even San can’t help him if he refuses treatment.”
Wooyoung’s eyes narrowed, a plan unfolding in his mind. “He wouldn’t do something as brainless as that, would he?”
It was 2AM a day later and Wooyoung was outside the Captain’s door with a fake story about some frayed nets at the ready as an excuse, when it turned out he didn’t need it. Hongjoong didn’t answer, even after five knocks. Wooyoung fetched San and the two of them crept inside. Sure enough, Hongjoong lay sweating and whining quietly in a mess of blankets.
“Sir?” Their leader shot up, hand clutching his gun, and for a moment didn’t recognise them. “I’m fi—”  “You’re not,” San cut him off verbally, but physically was still cautious in approaching until the gun was lowered. “It’s alright, we won’t tell. Just let me treat you.”
Hongjoong collapsed back into bed, in a sitting position that was more like a slump, and gripped his head in his hands. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me... I just woke up like this five days ago and I don’t know what it is—”
“Five days?” San plopped down at the foot of the bed, already holding his lantern up to the Captain’s face and examining it. “You should have told me!”
“I don’t know what it is, San,” Hongjoong bit out. “I need to be fit for command. We’re too close for something minor like this to get in the way.” “Something minor!” San gawked at him and threw up his free hand.
“How many fingers am I holding up?”
“San...”
“Tell me how many fingers!”
“It’s dark! I don’t know, I can’t see any!”
Wooyoung shook his head from his spot near the window and pinched his nose. “Let me tell the other officers.” It was more of a statement than a question, and Hongjoong frowned at him from the bed. “They need to know if you are unfit for command!”
The sickly leader groaned in a mix of protest and nausea. “Let San check me first,” he finally sighed, beginning to succumb to the fatigue blooming in his limbs.
San shook his head as he shone the light in unfocused eyes. “I need to go read up on this before I make a call. But I think we can all agree that it would be most prudent of you to remain in bed and avoid spreading it until the judgement is passed.” He sent a pointed glare to his patient on his way out.
Wooyoung followed and closed the door gently behind him. His exterior was stern but inside a nagging worry began to snowball out of control.
Something was really wrong here.
...
Mingi announced a rat-killing competition, offering double rum rations for the man that brought him the most dead vermin, as a sly way to keep the crew busy and clueless to the absence of their Captain on deck as his health rapidly declined.
Wooyoung was posted as supervision and to keep the hunt from turning into a brawl as the crew got rowdy. He had been doing his best to keep his attention off of San’s studying which was vicious and more frenzied every day.
Occasionally he disappeared into the Captain’s quarters to observe something or ask a question, but the surgeon spent most of his time in his sickbay getting his hands on every relevant material he could find.
From this fact alone, Wooyoung knew they were dealing with something deadly. He sat with Yunho in the crow’s nest, overlooking a perfectly swabbed deck with nothing else to do but mind the winds and sail on.
Even when silent, the master rigger’s presence was comforting. Every time they sat up there, sometimes loud and sometimes peaceful, Wooyoung always experienced a sense of home. This time, Yunho knew he needed to talk. Wooyoung felt soft eyes on him before a soft voice followed.
“It’s unnerving, isn’t it.”
Wooyoung nodded. “San running around like a chicken with his head cut off to find out what the sickness is...” he trailed off, not wanting to create a whole affair about it, but Yunho knew what he meant. “Exactly. It’s not encouraging. But I do think he’s getting close, he hasn’t slept at all the past couple of days.”
Yunho watched the men moving around on deck, minuscule as ants from his towering vantage point. “I do wish he’d come to our cabin at least and tell me what he’s finding.” “Maybe if Captain wasn’t so difficult,” Wooyoung knew his tone was more bitter than Yunho was used to from him.
Yunho wasn’t upset but couldn’t help but shake his head. “You’re not understanding his reasons. Hongjoong-hyung isn’t resisting because he doesn’t care whether the crew is in danger, it’s just part of his struggle with—with being strong for us.” Wooyoung was confused.
“Captain’s always...” Yunho was struggling to put words to emotions. “He’s always been so driven to spend himself on us. To give his time and energy to the commanding of this ship, one that he created with his own two hands, you know. Sure, he’s stubborn, but he knows what’s best ultimately and he’ll surrender when his body forces him to. I only wish that wasn’t the case.”
It was interesting to see Yunho, a tall, intimidating boy with the heart of a child and a truly light personality, so serious about something. He was still easy to talk to, and Wooyoung was still relaxed enough to ask a more personal question. “How exactly did you meet him?”
Yunho smiled sheepishly at the memory. “It was when my brother and I were living on the street. We had escaped the orphanage and to provide for our needs I begged, fought in street fights, and occasionally stole change. It was a wild time! I was picking food out of the rubbish at a tavern one morning when I saw a boy at the bar with a bag of silver hanging at his belt. Hongjoong-hyung, but I didn’t know his reputation then. To me he was just some random kid. He was certainly too young legally to buy rum so as he sweet talked the bartender I snatched the money bag. I made it two steps before a gun was on my back and a sword at my neck. And yet to give me a chance to win the money for myself, he challenged me to a fist fight. That was his mistake! He put up a decent fight but I beat him, and he offered me employment. I didn’t want to leave my brother but... the promise of enough money to buy a comfortable life convinced me. I’ll go back for him one day, when all this is over and the treasure is found.” He told the tale with a soft smile, reminiscence twinkling over his face.
“Have you ever doubted the existence of the treasure?” Wooyoung’s question was quiet, treading carefully among the stars in Yunho’s eyes.
Yunho’s expression didn’t waver but he turned to Wooyoung expectantly. “Perhaps the question you’re really asking is ‘have you ever doubted your captain’?”
Wooyoung blushed but didn’t deny it.
“And I can assure you I have not. I trust him, and he trusts the way to treasure. He’s never given me reason to doubt.” The answer was satisfactory, and Wooyoung gave a small squeeze of gratitude to the rigger’s shoulder.
“Officers report to the Captain’s quarters!” Seonghwa’s yell reached the crow’s nest and Wooyoung felt a sinking feeling hit his stomach.
When everyone was present and the door was thrice locked, San began explaining his discoveries.
“The symptoms are those of gaol fever so far. If it is some strain of that disease then you must have contracted it from the dead bodies you touched aboard that ghost ship. Those people must have escaped a prison where it was prevalent.”
Hongjoong sat at his desk, complacent, before asking, “Has anyone else caught it?”
San shook his head. “The period of time that it actively spreads must have passed while you were confined here. My other working theory is that the catalyst of the disease was already near death on the ghost ship and is significantly weakened now, having infected you. Still, I suggest we exercise caution and use good hygiene.”
Here he was lost in his mind for a moment, the stuffy room suffocating his thoughts.
“Will he...recover?” Seonghwa put forward the officers’ collective concern.
“It...I...I can’t promise anything. No one has survived anything like this, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! It just means there’s not much I can do to heal you.”
Here he stared at Hongjoong with shining and apologetic eyes. But their leader nodded as if he had known all along. “I’ll do what I can,” San recognised guilt forming again and let it go. “But the fight is yours, Captain.”
“There’s a rash now,” Hongjoong admitted, resisting the urge to squirm in his chair.
“A sign of regression...” San almost whispered. “You may inform the crew,” he directed his words to Mingi, who by right had command now. “My official judgement is that he is unfit for command.”
Wooyoung’s heart went a mile a minute, and he couldn’t get over the sensation that he was hearing something unintended for his ears.
“How long?” Hongjoong’s voice was steady. He didn’t need to utter the rest of his question for the others to know what he was asking. “At best... two weeks,” San choked out before turning away.
The room was spinning in Wooyoung’s eyes from shock. He focused on San’s shaking back to reorient himself before running to him and enclosing his tense form in his arms. “I’m so sorry,” the doctor was whispering. “There’s nothing I can do.”
Hongjoong himself had his head in his hands and was refusing eye contact with anyone. He allowed Seonghwa to drag him to bed as silence lingered. The officers stood still, trying to work through what they had just heard.
Finally Seonghwa grabbed Mingi and stepped out for a discussion. The others were useless for the rest of the day, eventually retiring and, in the case of San, poring over books all evening again once released from Wooyoung’s grip. Sleep escaped Wooyoung, and he stared at the boards of the ceiling devoid of even aimless thought.
...
The fire in the kitchen crackled steadily, glowing in the two pairs of eyes that observed it.
“It’s your charge as quartermaster. This isn’t a conversation we need to have,” Seonghwa’s voice was almost as distant as his thoughts.
Mingi’s eyes were shining with unshed tears, yet flames danced in them. “I know... and I suppose I took the responsibility on myself when I accepted the position. But you and I both know I’m not the candidate who is cut out for it. You are.”
With a shake of the head and a shuddering breath, Seonghwa tried to make Mingi understand. “You’re saying that because you never wanted it to be your responsibility. It’s only proper that you take...” His brow knit together in remorse. “...take what’s yours by right.”
“Seonghwa-hyung,” Mingi whined. “I’m not trying to put the pressure on you so I can avoid shouldering the burden, but think of the crew’s need for leadership. At the very least, couldn’t we share it?”
“What would he say to that, I wonder?” Seonghwa looked to the door, half expecting Captain to walk in and tell them himself. “I feel silly even considering it. But we need to agree on our course of action, whatever it is. So maybe... maybe that’s the best option. The two of us delegating duties and making the important decisions together. And we both know our most important task is to find land and someone who can help.”
He followed a floating spark with his eyes until it went out, wishing he could wake up from this egregious dream. “If we have to take command, let it only be brief.”
“Oh thank you, hyung,” Mingi finally released the built up tension in his chest, lowering his head into his hands. “I could never do it alone.”
He sniffed in embarrassment and rubbed tears out of his eyes until Seonghwa appeared by his side, guiding him into a hug. “You’ll never need to,” he reassured him.
Both were weighed down by the gravity of the odds stacked against their leader. “Hey, hey,” he shushed the younger boy. “We’ve come through worse.” Mingi nodded as his weeping quieted, but he didn’t speak what was both on their minds.
We’ve never done it without Hongjoong.
...
“Wouldn’t it make sense that a cure could exist in the east for a disease that only exists in the east?”
San chewed slowly on his bite of breakfast and thought aloud. Yeosang narrowed his eyes at him over his spoon.
It had been established as an unspoken rule that the officers wouldn’t discuss Hongjoong’s condition, even amongst themselves. No one could blame San for continuing to search for answers, however, and they all grunted some noise of agreement before returning to their meals.
“I mean, there’s no record of any affective treatment for gaol fever, but this isn’t exactly the same thing, so is it possible...?”
Finally Yeosang dropped his spoon into the bowl. “San, are you saying there could be a cure somewhere out here?”
Suddenly aware of the attention on him, San became defensive. “Well, like I said, I don’t know. Really! I don’t! But...”
“It would be worth a try?” Mingi cocked his head to the side, understanding where San was going with this.
“Mingi, of course it would be worth a try! I’ve only been looking at known illnesses and this is something unknown which means of course there’s a chance. But it’s not my call, it’s yours and Seonghwa’s. And I suppose Yeosang’s if he can tell us where the nearest inhabited land is.”
Yeosang sighed at the out of place sarcasm. “Yes, I can tell you once I look at my maps. But do you know what type of cure to look for?”
San nodded, almost eagerly. “I’ve got it narrowed down between a few different concoctions. Get me to an apothecary and I’ll buy their most useful medicine.”
For the next day Wooyoung could be found faithfully at the crow’s nest with Yunho, waiting to sight land. The atmosphere was rife with agitation, and when he spotted it, the buzz around him grew. Land was a blueish green tinted shadow on the horizon, but to Wooyoung it held the promise of saving grace.
“Let it not be a wasted trip,” Yeosang mumbled, mostly to himself, but Wooyoung heard and countered with a nervous chuckle, “Optimism only please, Yeosang!”
Mingi called the crewmen together as they pulled up to the dock and announced “Dismissal for the afternoon. I expect you back at sunset.” He didn’t pay much attention to the practically forgotten Seunghyun and followers, who hung around the ATEEZ instead of exploring the harbour.
Seonghwa was at the helm, surveying the deck below for remaining rats, when he noticed Yeosang hanging around just past his peripherals. He grew in concern watching the younger boy who stared off into space as if his mind was running in circles.
“Everything alright?”
There was a pause and a tilt of the head before Yeosang answered, “Well, we both know it’s not.” His lips were pursed again, white rimmed and dry.
Seonghwa leaned heavier on the wheel, mentally begging Yeosang not to go there.
“I mean, last time I poked my head in he looked hours off from leaving us.” Seonghwa’s heart wrenched into a tight knot inside him. He couldn’t figure out if Yeosang was angry or something else. “He still hasn’t addressed us properly with—with instructions or advice or...or last words,” tears were bubbling to the surface, clouding his vision.
“We’re running out of time,” he cried and Seonghwa was there in an instant. His own breath was coming out in shaky bursts and finally he had to break down as well. “I don’t know what to say,” Seonghwa admitted, scrubbing his face furiously.
He had been putting everyone else back together as they split at the seams but when it came down to it, he wasn’t sure he could convince himself it would all be fine. “I’m scared too.”
Yeosang nodded at the voicing of his thoughts. Without the guilty eyes of the dying on them, they forgot everything and wept together.
...
Yunho’s eyes were rimmed with red. San took note and refrained from bringing it up. No need to point out how poorly they were faring in this disaster.
The hunt was soon well underway. The pair had taken off to scope out the new wharf while the others stayed onboard.
“What is this place?” Yunho caught the attention of a woman who passed them on the docks.
“Geobugi- the last pirate haven in the east.”
After jogging through the streets of the small seaside town, San located the apothecary shop on the southern outskirts. For being a remote establishment, it was still fairly busy.
Impatience radiated off of him as he stood in line listening to the string of detailed advice being given about plant care to the patron in front of him. When it was their turn he clasped his hands and opened his mouth before being cut off.
“Let me guess, you need to save a wilting rose too.”
...
Hongjoong had descended into incoherent mumbling and fits of coughs.
Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho played a card game in the corner of the Captain’s quarters, unsure of what to do during each episode. Just as Wooyoung was about to win the game a single knock sounded from the door, followed by a crashing sound as it was thrown open.
All three stood in shock at the sight of Seunghyun and his accomplices barging in. Seonghwa and Yeosang were trapped in their arms, two swords precariously balanced at their necks.
“What is the meaning of this!” Mingi took a step back as Seunghyun’s men tightened their grips on the prisoners.
“This, silly boy, is a mutiny,” Seunghyun laughed back. He hummed a lazy tune and sauntered over to the bedridden Captain, who at some point had become aware that his room was being invaded.
Hongjoong’s gun was locked, loaded, and aimed but a thin stream of blood winding down Yeosang’s neck lowered the weapon by itself. Seunghyun tutted at the shaking captain, limp hair plastered to his forehead, and held his hand out palm up. “Weapons, please.”
With the last of the officers’ guns the power was officially in the hands of the mutineers. Wooyoung held Yeosang’s fearful gaze and tried to send him a withering smile.
To his surprise, the captors removed the biting metal from their necks and shoved them at the other three, causing a collision and knocking over the card table. “You’re not killing us?” Seonghwa’s question was bold but sensible.
Seunghyun ignored him and drew his own sword, placing the long cold edge against Hongjoong’s throat. “No. I need you to help raise the anchor, or he dies.”
“I’ll tear your flesh off if you touch him,” Jongho wasted no time making threats. “I don’t think you’ll get very far, child,” Seunghyun teased, pressing the blade closer.
“Power was transferred peacefully,” Mingi shouted back. “You have no reason to mutiny!” Again the ringleader laughed. “You’ll figure it out soon enough. Now! Unfurl the sails, we have places to be.”
...
Yunho and San were already running down the hill with their prize when they spotted the ATEEZ. “Why are they leaving?” San was stopped in his tracks.
Yunho ran a hand through his hair. “There’s no way the crew already reboarded!”
To pick up the pace, he scooped up San and carried him on his back, covering the distance to the dock in long strides. When the surgeon was back on the ground he looked around wildly for their seamen. A dozen or so of their crew came running in behind them from the town all jumping, waving, and yelling in outrage at being left behind.
“Stay here, all of you,” Yunho instructed hastily. “We’ll go figure out what’s happening and come back for you.” With that he turned and dove off the end of the dock. San secured the medicine under his clothes and followed him.
“I see them!” Wooyoung’s sharp eyes were directed out the back of the ship through the tall windows of the captain’s cabin where they were confined. “Someone fetch a rope!”
Luckily, Hongjoong had his canvas bag in the room and there was enough rope to lower it to the two swimmers. Jongho secured the end to his own frame and braced himself on the desk while Yunho and San climbed up and were helped in by the other officers. “A last minute boarding,” Yunho gasped out, shaking water from his head. “Who is at the helm?” San surveyed the room in a panic.
“It’s Seunghyun. He and his minions staged a mutiny,” Seonghwa bit out, pulling up and stowing the rope. “He’s locked us in here and stolen Yeosang’s maps,” Mingi continued for him. “We don’t know where we’re going or why but he won’t kill any of us... I think.”
Yunho frowned. “Are there plans to take back the ship?” Jongho was righting the card table and shaking his head, “They far outnumber us now that the entire crew has been left behind. Did you at least find medicine?”
San nodded vigorously, pulling the little vial out safe and sound. He took it straight to Hongjoong’s bedside.
“How are you?” The question was inadequate for the pain San could see swimming in the Captain’s eyes.
“Alive.”
Hearing his voice crack between puffs of air, San shuffled around to pour a glass of water and helped him sip it. “I’ve got something to help you, if it’s not too late,” the surgeon told his patient softly, uncorking the bottle. “It won’t taste great but it may save your life, hyung.”
Trapped in Hongjoong’s room, the officers made do and spread their extra garments on the floor, sleeping in a huddled formation. San opted to pull up a chair next to the captain’s bed and keep an eye on him through the night. It took awhile with Yeosang’s arm flung across him and Jongho’s feet next to his face but eventually Wooyoung drifted off.
...
“Shoot me.”
Wooyoung jolted out of his sleep, the soft-spoken plea waking him abruptly. He sat up to check with San, but the tired doctor was fast asleep in his chair. Wooyoung swallowed and looked to Captain. It had sounded like his voice that had spoken, but no one else of the officers dozing around the room had noticed. Perhaps it had been in his head.
He settled back, unsure if he could fall back into the peaceful rhythm of sleep now. A groan from the otherwise still body of Hongjoong captured his attention, and he peered over at the patient to discover his eyes wide open and fixed on the ceiling. Wooyoung’s heart jumped in surprise.
“Shoot me.”
The words were distinctly his, Wooyoung observed, following the movement of his mouth before lips pressed tightly together into a hard line.
“Captain...?” His hesitant venture was lost on Hongjoong’s ears. The captain was delirious.
Nervous now, Wooyoung stood and leant closer, trying to catch the older boy’s attention. He wanted to say more, but his mouth had seemingly gone dry. Hongjoong was completely unaware and muttered another “Shoot me. Please.”
Deeply disturbed by what he was witnessing, the stricken gunner leaned over the bed and grabbed hold of San’s arm, shaking him awake. “What...? Oh!”
The doctor picked up on what was happening much faster than Wooyoung had, and rose to try to bring Hongjoong out of it. “Captain, can you hear me?”
“Please, I just want to go. I just want to be found already... let me leave!” His cries were growing in volume, and soon other officers were stirring from their slumber. Wooyoung looked on with a furrowed brow, trying to make sense of Hongjoong’s increasingly pitiful requests.
He was becoming agitated, strength enough to twist up his sheets granted to his limbs in the haze of delirium. “Come on,” San was shaking him, nothing else to be done. “Just wake up, it’s not real!”
“Someone end it, I’m-I’m begging...  No! That’s an order, I’m ordering! Someone...someone shoot.” His stuttering trailed off, and Wooyoung turned the words over in his mind. “I just want to be found. Can’t you see?” These words escaped with perfect clarity and Wooyoung latched on to them.
He wants to be found? He began to think back to what he knew of Hongjoong’s past. “He thinks he’s on the abandoned island again,” Mingi supplied, joining them at the bedside.
“I just want to leave this place...” Hongjoong had grown exhausted again, fighting San along with the demons in his mind. His last entreaty left his lips almost too soft to hear. “Take me home.”
“You are home,” Seonghwa had joined them. Wooyoung saw wetness on his face and averted his eyes.
Hongjoong went quiet again, and the attention in the room was inadvertently cast on San, who busied his fingers with the bedding and avoided the eyes. “It’s not an improvement,” he finally said. “But it’s not the final stage yet.”
This was no comfort, but it sent the other officers to their beds in resignation. San paused over Hongjoong’s top blanket, clenching it in his hands before smoothing it out and returning to his chair.
Wooyoung could read frustration in the lines of his face. He wanted to say something, but again gazed elsewhere before returning to the floor. He didn’t sleep.
...
Hongjoong slept all the next day. A mutinous goon delivered some food around midday, but apart from that there was nothing to be done but sit around the card table, playing mindlessly.
Yunho volunteered to swap out with San in keeping an eye on his patient, and when San sank into a chair at the table during the whist game, Wooyoung felt his hopes sink with him.
“He’s almost gone,” San whispered unbidden. Jongho sat back in his chair like he had been struck across the face. Wooyoung was distinctly and unexpectedly aware of how young Jongho was to be in this situation.
“The medicine’s not working?” He asked quietly for clarification. San wouldn’t meet his eyes. “He should have shown improvement by now…”
“He’s stopped breathing!” Yunho suddenly screamed from the other side of the room.
Everyone was there instantly. “How long?” San was reaching for a pulse.
“Just now, I swear,” Yunho stumbled over his words. “I was watching him like you told me but he just—”
“Stand back!” San didn’t have time to hear the full explanation as he turned he motionless body over and began pounding on his back.
“Someone grab me the bellows!” He yelled and it was placed in his hand by Yeosang a moment later. “What are you doing?” The navigator asked, disturbed at how pale Hongjoong was.
San positioned the nozzle in his mouth and began squeezing air in. “Giving him breath.”
It went on for a full minute before San threw the bellows to the side and in desperation gave Hongjoong a strong slap across the face. This final attempt to revive him was successful.
Gasping and fighting for air, Hongjoong’s eyes flew open. There was a collective current of alleviation and San collapsed back into his chair.
Needing to resuscitate himself after the experience, Wooyoung opened the back windows and took deep gulps of the sea air. He realised his legs were shaking and leaned on the windowsill. Captain just died. He died and came back.
Yunho grasped Hongjoong’s hand and held it in between his. “Please don’t leave us again, hyung.”
Seonghwa’s hand was on San’s shoulder. “That was brilliant.”
“Too close. That was entirely too close.”
No one budged for the rest of the evening, terrified that doing so would send their captain back into respiratory arrest.
San noted after the sun went down that his breathing had actually improved significantly, and began to allow a spark of faith that he would survive to grow inside. “The stuff I gave him was made after an epidemic of a disease quite similar to gaol fever,” he told the others to pass the time. “I think it may be kicking in.”
On their third day of imprisoned sailing Hongjoong came to. It was as if he had needed to hit rock bottom before surfacing.
Mingi watched his eyelids twitch and struggle before sliding open, revealing eyes that were finally focused and aware of their surroundings. The officers didn’t need to be called over to see their captain was conscious, having heard the sound of his voice croak a timid, “Mingi?”
“Yessir?” Mingi responded, happy tears streaming down his face.
“How sweet,” came a sarcastic voice from the doorway. All turned to see Seunghyun, who had been absent since the mutiny. His mouth formed a sneer. “It’s still too late for you, sir. We’ve arrived.”
A/N: Haha take a shot every time Wooyoung doesn’t sleep! Feeeeeeel the feeeeeeeeels ppl! Fun fact: The beginning was a reference to Wave mv filming behind the scenes when Hongjoong claimed he wasn’t hot in that jacket xD I’ve had a lovely week sailing, poking around at the beach and basically having a refresher course in the minutæ of sea living and piracy which will be incredibly useful for the accurate production of this series :) and is of course also of great personal interest. Mum bought me a nautical curiosities book to gobble up :P so I’ll go read that now and then hopefully wake up to some notes tomorrow... P.S. if there are questions about the disease feel free to message me because we won’t really go further into that in the series proper, there’s just too much ground to cover!
“If I didn’t know you,” said Stella, who was at my bedroom doorway, “I wouldn’t think you were going on a date with a guy like Shawn Mendes.”
She wasn’t wrong. I was decked out in a long black button up, ripped black jeans, and black Vans. However, I had the decency to keep my makeup colorful. Who doesn’t love bright red eyeshadow, thick wings, and a nude lip? Besides, all black clothing and bright eyeshadow was all I had for the moment. These days, I barely found time for washing my clothes or makeup brushes. My glamorous office job and homework was getting quite demanding. I was surprised I found time to see Shawn on the weekend.
I say that as if I wasn’t putting off psych homework. The last time I did this was for some fuckboy who didn’t care about my grades… or me at all. How did I know it was going to be different this time? Usually, I can tell when someone wants to hook up and leave it at that, but I have spoken to Shawn as many times as I can count on one hand, and I couldn’t detect any of that. Must be a good actor. Maybe he’s done this before.
“Maybe I’ve lost my mind,” I said, more to myself than to Stella.
She heard and responded anyway. “Losing your mind is staying in bed for a whole twenty four hours. You’re getting back into the swing of things, so even if this date goes bad, the interaction is good for you. This is normal for our age.”
Again, she’s not wrong. My antidepressant prescription was finally refilled, so the fog in my head was starting to clear up. It was just way too easy to slip back into isolation. My self destructive tendencies were just being done out of habit at this point.
“When was the last time you went on a date?” Stella asked.
I blew out a sigh and thought about it as I applied lip gloss over my nude lipstick. I was hardly the type to go on an actual date. “Shit, I don’t know. Before college, I think.”
“So you were seventeen?”
“No! I started college late. I was probably eighteen, almost nineteen.”
“That’s still about three years.”
“Well, chances are neither of us are really taking this thing seriously,” I said, putting my lip products into my purse. “He didn’t ask me on a date. He just wanted to hang out.”
Stella clicked her tongue and folded her arms. “So you’re just gonna go get laid?”
“No. I’m past that part of life.”
“So it’s a date.”
“No.”
She was more confused than I was by the time Shawn had texted me. He asked to come up to the dorm, so I gave him the floor and number. According to Stella, I was either definitely getting laid or my man friend was a real gentlemen. I wasn’t sure which one I was more nervous about.
“Should I answer the door?” Stella asked, bouncing on her feet. “So I can tell him that you’re almost ready, and then you can make a dramatic entrance, and he’ll be like ‘you look… wow.’ Y’know the way guys do!” She said all of that very fast.
“And then I say ‘you don’t look too bad yourself,’” I said, amused. “What universe is this?”
We both laughed, but then we were cut off by a knock on the door. Stella looked at my with a grin so wide her dimples came out. I tried to match her enthusiasm.
“I’ll get it,” she said, turning on her heel towards the front door.
“No, I will!” I snapped, suddenly frantic. I pushed past her to answer the door.
“No, you have to make your dramatic entrance!”
“I don’t have to!”
We bickered as we got closer to the door. Mind you, it was five steps from my bedroom. I pretty much slapped Stella’s hand out of the way as she reached for the doorknob, and I knocked her out of the way with my hip. At the last second, she stood behind the door as I opened it.
I smiled wide at Shawn, who had been waiting for thirty seconds too long. He was in a white button up, black skinny jeans, and black boots. Tall and handsome as ever. It’s always the handsome ones that’ll get you. What are the chances I was falling into another fuckboy trap?
He returned the smile, probably acting like he didn’t hear me tackle my roommate. “Hey, you ready?”
I nodded like a lovesick puppy. This was quite unlike me, if you don’t think about the times I was easily swayed by various guys who gave zero fucks. Oh god, am I easy?
Stella was hopping like a bunny from behind the door. I shot her one last glance before stepping out of the dorm and into the hallway.
No one was around to see or feel the awkward air of me walking next to Shawn. It was obvious that we were… into each other? But it was still, for lack of a better phrase, the first date and I was unbelievably aware of that. Just by appearance alone, Shawn and I didn’t look like people who would typically hang out with each other.
Shawn walked with a type of confidence I could only dream to have. People noticed him, people wanted to be friends with him. There was just something about him that draws you in, and it drew in my broody ass.
I walked with my shoulders hunched, my hood up, and my head down. I tried not to be noticed, and I was pretty sure it worked. Strangers in class who tried to talk to me were always caught off guard by my black lipstick and dark eyeliner, like it’s never been done before. I was a little unapproachable, and I didn’t intend for it to be that way.
“So before we go,” Shawn said, “you got any allergies or dietary restrictions I should know about? ‘Cause we’re gonna go eat.”
Okay… doesn’t seem like a hook up situation. I was also surprised he had the decency to ask. The only reason why my face felt hot was because I actually had an answer.
“You ready? ‘Cause it’s a decent sized list,” I told him. Then, I named all the restaurants I couldn’t eat at because I’ve gotten sick from the food. “Also, I can’t have anything spicy, or anything that’s super processed and dripping with grease.”
I didn’t love explaining this to people, but it was necessary. I prefer not being sick, especially on a date. It’s a long story.
“Alright, coffee it is,” Shawn concluded.
We ended up going to the place he and Camila performed at a couple weeks ago. It was much less crowded in broad daylight. Shawn ordered some passion fruit whatever, and I stuck with jasmine tea. I insisted on paying for myself, but nah, I was invited here or whatever.
“Where do you wanna sit?” Shawn asked when we had our drinks.
I wordlessly went for the table at the far corner of the shop. The place was quite small, so we weren’t exactly away from everyone else. From here, I could see the entrance, and the string of customers that would come and go. The bathrooms were also right next to where we sat, so I could make an impromptu escape if needed.
“Away from the sun, eh?” Shawn joked. “As expected.”
If this date was going to consist of goth jokes I swear-
“So how’s your day goin’?” I asked, keeping a smile on my face.
“The usual. I worked, went to class.”
I nodded, playing with my steaming to-go cup. “You said you work at a flower shop, right? What’s that like?”
“Oh, I love it.” Shawn sat up in his seat. “I love the different types of flowers we got. There’s one, a chaenomeles, or a flowering quince - beautiful, one of my favorites.”
The way he talked about being surrounded by pretty plants four times a week was entrancing. He was really into it. He went into detail about arranging flowers down to the vase they went in. He knew his stuff and he loved every bit of it. Damn it, he’s passionate. I like passion in a guy. Damn it.
“So you do the arrangements and you deliver them?” I asked. Listen, I wanted to know more about him and for him to know less about me.
“Pretty much. Although, I’ve been delivering to a lot of funerals lately. That’s probably more your neck of the woods, right?” He smirked.
I scoffed. “Oh yeah, the girl who wears all black must love attending funerals, huh?” I sat back and sipped my tea. “It’s quite the opposite actually, even though I’ll admit, I look like I love death and dying.”
Shawn tilted his head, curious. “Is that not what being a goth is?”
“I wouldn’t know ‘cause I’m not a goth.” A smile almost grew on my face, but I stayed neutral.
Silence fell between us, and I looked down at my cup. I could feel Shawn’s brown eyes on me, and one glance at his face showed me a charming, boyish smile. He knew I knew something, and he was quietly coaxing it out of me.
And it worked.
“Okay, fine!” I said, scooting forward and placing my elbows on the table. “Goths are merely aware of how short and fragile human life is. We-” I cleared my throat, “They acknowledge and accept the fact that we’re all going to mcfreaking die one day.”
Shawn nodded. “Okay, I see. So they’re not afraid of dying?”
“Depends on the person,” I replied. “They’re incredibly aware of the dark side of things - obviously. But they know of the light too. Light and dark, life and death. But anyone can have that mindset, really. So I would say being goth is finding beauty in the dark.”
“So what makes you not one of them?”
I thought for a moment. Yeah, I was fascinated by things that deviated the mainstream. I thought about death more than I’d like to admit. I wore skulls and black lace and dark makeup, but that shouldn’t be a reason to put me in a box. I knew I wasn’t going to stay like this forever. I just never labeled myself as what others labeled me as.
“I forgot where the beauty was,” I finally answered.
That made Shawn smile. He finally got a sliver of what I just might come with. He didn’t say anything either, he just sank into the moment, and it felt like he wanted me to be there with him.
My eyes went around the coffee shop, trying to find a way to change the topic. More people were starting to enter the vicinity. It was getting less chill and more hectic. Then I looked at the table top. We both had our hands around our cups. I found Shawn’s bird tattoo on his hand, something that made him just a little more attractive.
“So what does your tattoo mean?” I asked.
His response had me floored. “Which one? I’ve got five of them.”
Damn it.
“I guess all of them,” I replied, a smile creeping up on my face.
All five of his tattoos were special and deep. Each one gave me more reasons to not ghost him after this was over. Shawn really loved this city. He really loved his family. He loved his mother so much.
“You really love music, huh?” I mused, looking at the beautiful guitar tattoo on his forearm.
“More than anything,” he replied.
“More than flowers?”
“A hundred percent. Playing music is all I want to do for the rest of my life.”
Tell me why that made me genuinely smile. Tell me why that was so goddamn attractive.
I asked him what his favorite songs were to play, and he had a list of sweet love songs I had listened to at a different point in time. He loved writing songs about love, and he revealed he hasn’t been in a proper serious relationship before. Neither had I. Shawn was a year younger than me, so his reasoning was from just that, being young.
Part of me wished that was also my reason.
After talking to Shawn for over an hour, we fell into a silence much less awkward than when we were walking out of my dorm building. I was stuck wondering how a soft, sunshine-y boy like him could find interest in a stone cold storm like me. I wondered, but I didn’t want to tap out just yet.
Once the coffee shop was too crowded, we went out to the street. This part of downtown was still unfamiliar, but I didn’t mind this time. I was talking to a cute boy. A soft boy. This wasn’t a normal occurrence for me.
“What are you thinking about?” Shawn asked me as we strolled down the street.
I was staring at the ground. I really didn’t know what to say. We spent the last hour sharing our thoughts and whatnot, why does he need more? I merely shrugged.
“Alright, well I have another question,” he said. “What made you agree to this date?”
Oh fuck it is date.
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “But after spending some time with you, I can say… you’re… charming? And, kind?” I chuckled. “I don’t really talk about things like that so explicitly.”
He looked at me for a second. “Okay, well I do. I asked Stella about you after I saw you at my set. All I’ve wanted to do is to get to know you. You’re just really cool, and really mysterious. It’s kinda drawing me in.”
This had to be a trap somehow. Shawn couldn’t possibly have genuine interest in me. He was all softness and joy, and I was all stormy and bitter. This couldn’t be real.
“I… awesome,” I mumbled, trying to hide my giddiness. Yeah, I was in disbelief, but how often is a guy like that so upfront about his feelings? That is, if he wasn’t lying about any of this.
“You haven’t told me enough about you, honey,” he said.
I glanced at him, placing my hands in my sweater pockets. So he noticed my questioning. “Well, you kinda got it figured out. I’m a girl who likes wearing black.”
“That’s it, eh? Come on, don’t be shy.”
Shyness wasn’t what I would have called it.
“What do you wanna know?” I asked sheepishly.
“Hmm… something crazy that’s happened to you.”
Honestly, it’s just as bad as the word, “everything.” But at least I had something to think about. The craziest thing I did was move countries at the age of nineteen, but it was only crazy in the eyes of my relatives, which was a lot of people. Does that count?
“I got my wisdom teeth out when I was seventeen,” I said casually. “That’s about as crazy as I get. When I was hopped up on drugs, I was telling my mom a tale of a chosen hero who on adventures all over the kingdom.”
Shawn chuckled. “Really?”
“Yeah. My mom recorded it, because she got really into it. She thought I was gonna be the next JK Rowling or something. But when I watched it back, I realized I was just talking about the Legend of Zelda series.”
“Insane. You’re insane.”
We walked a lap around the block, talking about nothing, and then we got back to Shawn’s car. I felt a thrill in my bones I couldn’t explain. I was trying to keep a cheesy grin off my face. I had to keep up my composed exterior.
“So have you been having fun?” Shawn asked when we were inside the vehicle.
“Definitely,” I replied simply.
He looked at me with a smile, and then he was pressing buttons on the radio. “Connect your phone. I wanna hear what you’re listening to.”
I quickly opened the Spotify app and changed the song I was last listening to. Why? It was one of Shawn’s songs. It was too soon for him to know that I was growing fond of his music. Instead, I chose a fairly popular Halsey song, and it played on the speakers.
“Oh, nice,” Shawn said, and he was singing along in seconds.
It got less nice as I listened to the lyrics. This song reminded me of a harder time. That’s probably why I didn’t listen to it for so long.
“You know I’m the one who put you up there
I don’t know why”
Cool way to finish a first date.
I stared out the window and stayed quiet, letting this dumb song swallow me whole. Flashbacks hit me before I could try to stop them. Backseat of my car. Weeks of silence. Feelings like you’re underwater. It made my insides go cold.
“You really get into it, eh?” Shawn asked halfway through the song.
The sound of his voice startled me, but I didn’t jump. I blinked a few times, coming back to present day. I’m in another man’s car. We’re in a different time period.
“Yeah,” I said. “A good song can alter my mood so quickly, I wonder if it’s normal.”
“Oh, I know the feeling. But I also think it has to do with the memories associated with the song.”
Once Halsey finished her song, a slow rock tune played. It was far less triggering, and it had a mile long title.
“She’s the Prettiest Girl at the Party and She Can Prove It with a Solid Right Hook,” I read off my phone. “That’s a banger.”
The following conversation about music helped ground me again. I knew Shawn was passionate about it, but music is the real love of his life. He was looking at the road as he drove, but he had a sparkle in his eyes that shone through the dark. Sometimes he was the flower delivery guy and the singer at a wedding. Sometimes he was the guy who played guitar at a house party.
Shawn was that guy.
We listened to several more of my favorite songs, most of which were symphonic metal. Some of them were lyrically dark, the type that compelled people to do that head tilt and ask “are you okay?” in that voice. Shawn just asked if I wanted to rethink not calling myself a goth, to which I played a Little Mix song to put that shit to rest.
“Oh, Woman Like Me?” he said, surprised. “Didn’t see that one coming.”
“There are many sides of me, my dear,” I told him. We were getting closer to campus, which meant the date was almost over. “You’ve only seen one.”
“Hopefully you’ll let me see more.” He pulled into the parking lot and stopped in an empty space in front of the main building. “So what level am I on now?”
I was shocked he remembered that. But if we’re being real here…
“Two.”
He chuckled. “Two, eh?”
“Yup.”
He hummed. He was looking at me again, and now I was looking at him. His eyes were still sparkling in that stupid cute way, and it was getting me weak.
“This might be the first time you’ve made direct eye contact with me,” he said softly.
“It’s because you’re cute and it confuses me,” I admitted, maintaining the eye contact. There, boy, another little sliver of my feelings.
That stupid charming smile appeared on Shawn’s stupid cute face. He quirked his eyebrows once and licked his lips. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from his mouth… This is bad.
“Well, you’re beautiful and it doesn’t confuse me at all,” he said, his voice getting low. You know, that voice that tells you something is going to happen. “In fact, it’s made things more clear.”
I felt myself getting even weaker. My heart was pounding, not just in my chest, but in my ears and my legs and the bottom of my feet. My stomach was turning over in a way that I wasn’t used to. My body was gravitating towards Shawn before my brain could process it.
“I really like your eyeshadow,” he said softly, doing the same motion.
“Thanks,” I breathed out.
Our faces were an inch apart. I got an intoxicating whiff of his cologne. I was teetering on the edge of just diving headfirst, but I had to be strong.
“I don’t kiss on the first date.”
We stayed in that position for a second. Shawn was the one to lean back first.
“Okay, that’s okay. I understand,” he said. He wasn’t smiling anymore.
It was easy to tell my rejection got to him. I didn’t want to leave knowing he was disappointed. I didn’t want him to think that I didn’t like him. I had been more aloof than I’d like to admit on this entire date, so maybe he was getting the wrong idea.
“So we should go on another date,” I told him, touching his arm, “and maybe I’ll kiss you then.” I smiled hopefully.
That was what he needed to perk up again. “Yeah, definitely. I’m looking forward to it.”
I nodded. “Okay. Alright. I’ll text you, or something. I’m gonna awkwardly leave now.”
He chuckled. “Alright. Goodnight.”
“Night.”
I had my purse and my phone on me, and I placed my hand on the door handle. But I stayed in that position for a minute. It was long enough to be weird. Was I really going to leave knowing that we really wanted to kiss each other?
“Ah, fuck it,” I said with a shrug, and then I was turning back to Shawn.
I would have hoisted myself over the center console if he didn’t meet me halfway. Shawn leaned in as quickly as I did, and his lips were pressing onto mine. It was much softer than I had anticipated, and I only realized it when Shawn placed a hand on the side of my face, gently cupping my chin.
My hand went around his wrist as we gently broke apart. It was only a split second of breathing time before I pulled him in for another. I softly took his bottom lip into my mouth, resisting the urge to just pounce on him completely.
Shawn moved his hand to the back of my neck, trying to pull me closer. Tongues and teeth began to clash, and it only made me grab onto his clean button up. Would it be a bad idea to spend some time in the backseat? We were practically leaning over the center console, moving back and forth like one was going to top the other.
But again… I had to be strong.
We broke apart, panting. My fingers stroked his cheek, and his hand found its way into my hair. I felt his quick breathing on my upper lip, and it only made me want to kiss him again.
“I have to go,” I told him.
But he leaned in again, kissing me once more. “Alright.”
“Alright,” I repeated breathlessly. Then I kissed him again, only for both of us to laugh softly.
“So what level am I at now?” Shawn asked with a cheeky grin.
I returned the smile. “Two and a half.”
“Oh, really? I’d say I’m at level four.”
“Nope. Two and a half. But it’s like I said, we’ll go on another date and see what happens.”
Riley woke up and had taken some aspirin to ease off her headache. It was now mid afternoon and still felt like a knife was stabbing her in the head- she must remember to never drink that much again in the future. Having a dry mouth she dragged her numb and heavy limbs over to the breakfast bar, and decided to have some fruit juice- this would hopefully give her a sugary kick and regain some energy. The thought of food made her feel nauseous.
Whilst attempting to nurse her hangover, she thought of the Beaumont’s and was glad that the brothers had arrived home safely.
She sat down and reminisced about the previous night. Riley enjoyed the night that was spent with her friends; she wondered if Daniel and Lola would get along with her friends from Cordonia. Maybe it would be a bad idea introducing Lola and Olivia, she thought- they were too alike in some certain ways and would clash. And together they would definitely cause trouble. She laughed along with her thoughts and realised she missed the Beaumont brothers already. The words “And Drake misses you too” still lingered in her mind.
Riley grabbed her phone, the bright light made her eyes screw up. She debated whether to ring Drake or not? Would he answer? Did he still care for her like she did for him? For some reason, she felt the need to speak to him, that reason maybe being called Bertrand- who constantly talked about the Walker siblings all night. Maybe she should return to Cordonia? Bertrand said he would help her with anything and that she is still part of their family. Even though she threw her SIM card away, her contacts were saved to her phone. She dialled his number- after dialling for a while it went to voicemail.
Hey you! Hope your okay? I miss you. Was hoping you’d answer. But obviously you are busy. Erm, I don’t know what else to say. So I’ll leave you to it.
Just as she hung up, there was a knock at the door. The lack of energy made it nearly impossible to function. Eventually pushing herself off the sofa; feeling dizzy, she answered the door.
“Nate! What are you doing here? I thought you was in Boston.”
“My meeting got cancelled.”
“Oo, so what are you doing here?”
“So, last night when I text you, I asked if you was just with Daniel and Lola?”
“I was with them when you text me why?”
“But you wasn’t just with them. There was two other guys with you too! You lied to me!”
“Yes there was. They are my friends- more like brothers to me though. But they wasn’t there in the cab with us- which was when you text me. How did you know?”
Riley started to panic now. Was he following them? This isn’t like him at all- he had been so nice until recently. Why does it matter who she was with or who she wasn’t with? She can spend time with who she wants, only she could control her life.
“I came to the club to surprise you after my meeting got cancelled. I’m sorry if I sound like a jerk- I just thought we had something special. I know we’re not together but I feel there’s something there.”
He walked over towards Riley, cupped her cheek and kissed her softly on the lips. The kiss meant nothing to her- they weren’t in a relationship and she was having doubts about who the ‘real’ Nate is. They were just two single people who met one night and have hung out a few times. They’d known each other just over a week, and his personality was like Jekyll and Hyde- one moment he was the handsome charmer, the next he was jerk who thought he control her life.
“I need to head off back to work, I’ll ring you later?”
“Sure. Bye.”
******
Drake had gone to his room and searched for flights to New York, the earliest one wasn’t leaving for a couple of days. Debating what to do, he poured himself a shot of whiskey. Should he just book a flight? Should he ask the Beaumont’s to go with him as they know where she would be? Alcohol wasn’t the answer especially at this time of day, but Drake didn’t have anything better to do until he could get a flight over to the States.
Maxwell went to look for Drake, he saw him rush out of the room after Savannah’s stunt. He felt guilty for not telling him that he and Bertrand went to New York.
“Buddy? Are you in there? Drake?”
Maxwell opened the door and saw Drake slumped on the floor, bottle of whiskey in hand. He slid down to sit beside his friend.
“Drake, I’m sorry. I needed to see her - she rung me. I wanted to make sure she was okay ya know..... we think she may come back.”
“What? She’s coming back?” Maybe I don’t need to go there now? She will be back soon?
“Well I don’t know for sure. But Bertrand kept drilling it in her head that we all miss her. She’s doing okay- she’s got a new job, she’s living with Daniel. But she seemed panicked when I found her. Kept mentioning King Father’s name but didn’t say anything else, just said he blackmailed her, hurt her and exiled her. But Riley can be a bit over dramatic at times.”
“Max, the reason she left was because he tried to rape her.....he told her to leave.... he hurt her.... I lost her.” He said, sadly crying into his hands.
Maxwell was shocked at Drakes confession about Constantine. Knowing now how hard it would have been for Riley to elaborate on her reasoning for leaving. Feeling guilty that his friends couldn’t be together because of this incident. But Maxwell was determined to try and fix their relationship and mend the broken bridges.
“Hey Drake? Where’s your phone?”
Drake pointed to the bed, then Maxwell picked it up and started typing Riley’s new number in it.
“Here, give her a ring... you’ve got a voicemail by the way! See ya later bud.”
*****
Riley’s hangover eventually but gradually disappeared, so she got finally got dressed for the day. Drake hadn’t returned her call. She couldn’t blame him, he probably hated her- it was obviously a stupid mistake ringing him.
Nate had called her shortly after he left and asked her out for dinner, to apologise for him being a jerk earlier on. They went a few hours before she started work at 9pm.
“Hey, you look beautiful!”
“Thanks! I’m sorry about last night. My drunk mind thought you meant was I with them when you text me- which I was. If I’d have known you was there....”
“Riley it’s fine. I should be saying sorry. Let’s go and eat.”
They had their food, and Nate offered to walk her back to the apartment before she had to leave for work.
When they arrived, Riley explained that she needed to go quickly into the shower before she needed to rush of to work and for him to make himself feel at home.
*****
Drake had finally sobered up after drowning his sorrows with nearly a full bottle of Whiskey. He decided to listen to the voicemail, expecting it to not be important.
As he listened to her voice, his heart shattered into tiny pieces. He kept playing it on repeat- torturing himself because she wasn’t with him in person. Maybe Maxwell and Bertrand going was a good idea. Could she want to come back, could they have the future they had planned? He dialled her number and waited nervously for her answer.
Riley’s phone accepted his phone call....
“Brooks! I miss you. I love you. Please don’t hang up on me. Please come back.”
“Hello? Who’s this?”
“Drake. Who’s this? Where’s Riley?”
“I’m Nate, her boyfriend. She’s not available right now. Can I leave a message?”
Drake hung up. ‘I’m Nate, her boyfriend’ just kept repeating in his head. He knew then, that he’d lost her for good. Reaching for another bottle of whiskey, Drake was hoping it would cure the pain his heart was feeling.
*****
Riley came out of the shower, towel drying her hair. Looking at Nate, she noticed his genuine smile had disappeared.
“Nate? What’s up?”
“NOTHING RILEY! IS THERE SOMETHING YOU NEED TO TELL ME?” Shouting in her face, the anger in his face, made Riley’s lip tremble and her body shake.
“What’s wrong? You’re scaring me.”
“I’m scaring you am I? First I see you with two men who you failed to mention was with you, and now I’ve just spoken to some love sick puppy called Drake! Who is he Riley?”
“He... he... I left him. Be- before I came back here. He’s in my past.”
“Past really? Don’t make me laugh Riley. He said he loved you and to go back.”
Riley was petrified, Drake eventually did return her call- it was obvious now that he didn’t hate her. But the timing of the call was bad timing. Who gave Nate the right to answer her phone she thought? She hoped he hadn’t gone through her texts to and from the Beaumont’s, those texts would give anyone with jealousy the wrong impression. She was taken away from her thoughts as he turned her around and pinned her against the wall- her face suffocating against the wall and her back facing his chest. He dragged her wrist behind her back lining it in the centre of her back- staying in that position forcing it to go higher up her back causing her arm to be in a V shape position. The force of his grip was causing excruciating pain. She wondered what he would do? Would he punch her upper arm, threatening to break it as it was in a vulnerable position? Is her shoulder going to dislocate?
“Nate, please! You’re hurting me!”
“I’m hurting you? You are embarrassing me! Sleeping with me then having other men hug you and tell you they love you.”
“Nate please! I’m begging you to stop. I haven’t done anything wrong. Please..... I’m sorry.”
He let go of her wrist, and instead pulled her hair so her head was forced back towards his, as he whispered ‘I’m the one that’s been here with you and for you. We can have a future. Stop embarrassing me and block them NOW.”
Loosening the grip of her hair, he pushed her head forward to the wall, then stormed out of the apartment. Riley turned around, slid down the wall - collapsing to the floor. Her eyes looked like a waterfall, the tears running down her face uncontrollably and her chest acting as the plunge pool. The words and hurt of what had just happened replayed in her mind as if it was on loop. After a while of crying, anger built up inside of her- she realised she didn’t do anything wrong. They weren’t in a relationship and she let Drake go- that wasn’t a lie. It’s her fault she wasn’t with the man she loved. She crawled over to her phone, holding onto her shoulder and then her wrist, when she pressed the dial button.
*****
Maxwell and Bertrand were sat having afternoon tea with Olivia and Hana, when Maxwell’s phone rang. The girls knew he was keeping in touch with Riley so he put it on loud speaker.
“Hey Ri, how you doing? Miss you!”
“Maxwell! To be honest I’m a mess. How often are flights to Cordonia?”
“Erm, I don’t know why?”
“Because I’m fed up of being fucked about, being blamed for things I haven’t even done. I’m fed up of crying. No one messes with a New Yorker! I need to get the old me back out of this shell. The old Riley Brooks who had spunk is coming back, and I’m getting my man and friends back- no one is going to stop me this time.”
As she hung up, Olivia smirked at Maxwell- “That’s my girl!”
