i don't know what to do with myself. but i am comforted in the fact that someone said once that once they finished the series the first time through, they immediately re-read it six more times back to back. never before has a book series made me feel this way. i have never adored characters so deeply as i adore these. i can't even try to put into words what these books mean to me. it's no secret on my blog that things have been very hard for me these last years. but there's been such joy that these books have brought me in such a way i wasn't sure i'd feel. i'm just so very thankful to them for bringing me that joy, and to this lovely, wonderful fandom i'm getting to know. it is so clear these books are very beloved, and for good reason. i'll hold these characters and this story in my heart always.

also if anyone wants to come in my inbox and talk about this series with me, i really would love that.

This is a little random, but during the Nie Mingjue flashbacks, when this part happened:

He knew of people’s likes and dislikes so that he could find suitable solutions; he loved running errands and could do twice the work with half the effort. Thus, Jin GuangYao could be said to be quite a talent at analyzing others’ interests. Nie MingJue was the only person whom Jin GuangYao couldn’t probe out any useful information about.

...it got me thinking of about what interests he could have possibly found of Lan Xichen’s to exploit. But now that I’ve read a few interactions between Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen, I think what Jin Guangyao exploits is Lan Xichen’s wish to be a good person without having to face any hard decisions and run the risk of being wrong. He is negatively motivated by guilt.

During the time when Nie Mingjue was still alive but after his feelings towards Jin Guangyao had soured, Jin Guangyao spent a lot of time discussing his issues with Lan Xichen in a way he didn’t do with Nie Mingjue even when their relationship was good. He confides in Lan Xichen about his struggles in Koi Tower, his plans for the lookout towers, and Nie Mingjue’s violent hatred of him. (And some of these complaints feel like they are presented in much the same way Nie Huaisang asks for help of Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao in his good-for-nothing act!) But Jin Guangyao never asks for anything too strenuous of Lan Xichen, nothing that would put him in a hard place.

When the Jin contingent turn their ire towards Jin Guangyao, he doesn’t ask Lan Xichen for help or to intercede on his behalf. He only asks that Lan Xichen help him expand the hunting grounds “if it won’t bother him.” He doesn’t seem to ask Lan Xichen to argue in support of the lookout towers for him, only to support him as he makes the leap. He asks that Lan Xichen appeal to Nie Mingjue on his behalf, but Lan Xichen was already doing that. Jin Guangyao keeps Lan Xichen around as background support for his different machinations, which allows him to keep his long-suffering but persistent hero persona while making Lan Xichen feel like he has made a difference by being the shoulder the other man cries on. Nothing materially changes for Jin Guangyao with Lan Xichen’s actions.

However, the moment Lan Xichen begins to doubt Jin Guangyao, such as in the Koi Tower discussion conference when Wei Wuxian discovers Nie Mingjue’s head, Jin Guangyao flips to guilting Lan Xichen. Now, Lan Xichen is no longer Jin Guangyao’s only support in the face of adversity; he is just another man in a long list of people who have forsaken poor, downtrodden Meng Yao for his shameful background. When everyone busts in the Jin treasury room and Wei Wuxian accuses him of harboring Nie Mingjue’s head, Jin Guangyao pivots to Lan Xichen, saying “of course you would assume I was the murderer,” which makes Lan Xichen feel guilty. When definitive proof is found of Jin Guangyao’s involvement in Nie Mingjue’s murder and his jade token is revoked, Jin Guangyao shows up to the Cloud Recesses, personally, to throw it into Lan Xichen’s face that he is abandoning their decades-long friendship for falsehoods (negative motivation) before switching to Lan Xichen’s sense of righteousness, his want to be good (positive motivation) by telling him about the new plans to siege the Burial Mounds again in order to trick him into going back to Koi Tower.

Jin Guangyao dangles this carrot and stick over Lan Xichen head right until his very death.

I'm... feeling a little better about this whole thing, now that ive had time to think, but I'm still not sure what we're gonna face down there. I'm pretty sure its definitely not worth it, whatever it is.

... Sada's toying with me, too. She said this research we're helping with is to benefit Koraidon. She knows how much I love him, and I'd never pass up an opportunity to help him grow. And I can't tell if it's a bluff or not just to get me down there– and she knows that. I know she does. I know how mind games work, ive played far too many of them.

I just want a straight-laced answer from her, and the only way to do that is to go down there. So that's where I'm going. I have my best friends, I have an all-star team, and I have my own teeth. I only hope that's enough.

When the dawn breaks and the sky clears, the mysterious guest would have been gone already, without a soul noticing.

Some tidbits that are incredibly important for my portrayal of Yelan: (I will be adding to this list over-time and editing these! Last edited: June 3rd, 2024)

Attitude. Yelan is from the nation heavily inspired by China, a country that is very firmly rooted within specific customs tied to social etiquette, which all seem to emphasize a deep sense of respect and modesty. I take this a lot to heart with Yelan, who is shown in the game to function incredibly well within the bounds of diplomacy, alongside a rather playful demeanor. She harbors, as expected, a deep-rooted sense of respect for her elders as shown towards Uncle Tian, Xiao, and when she speaks of her ancestors; she seems rather 'reserved' and polite in her initial social approach, and these traits seem to stretch out across her general interactions, until a playful nature becomes more evident among those she's closer to. In league with this, Yelan is not overtly confrontational, nor will she be rude, even around targets surrounding her profession, whether big or small, she will never be rude nor condescending. In case you skimmed past it in the above links, I would suggest giving this a read, until I write up something more thoroughly.

Her ownership of Yanshang, and people's knowledge of said fact. For the love of all that is (un)holy, the takeover of Yanshang Teahouse after Tartaglia delivers its former owner into the hands of Liyue's authorities is not something that is common knowledge whatsoever. This may likely even stretch to even members of the Qixing outside of Ningguang and Uncle Tian (the Yuheng may be another), as the less people know, the better it may serve even the Tianquan herself. In essence, unless we've spoken about it directly, do not have your muse be aware of details that they have no way of knowing.

Shipping. I don’t see Yelan as someone who is particularly made for traditional romantic relationships in any cases outside of primarily one. I feel this way because of her line of work (and her likely inevitable fate), but more importantly so, the reason that draws her to take on the work that she does. After the loss of her team, she told Ningguang the following: “We both made a mistake: We shouldn’t have involved ordinary folk in what we do.” This shows that Yelan shoulders a burden that she believes others couldn’t and/or should never bear because of the fate that is tied to it. For Yelan, this speaks of such an inherent loneliness that she has chosen in her life and is okay with, which is presumably because it’s deeply-rooted in her due to the fate of her team, and the influence of her ancestors. But this decision makes her rather incompatible with most individuals, for she will, honestly, never give up what she does while she lives, and on top of that, rather refuses to involve anyone else in her business with and within the Chasm as a whole. In my opinion, this leaves the only people (for romantic long-term investments), ones who have or know a similar life to her. Someone who understands active willed sacrifice and the sense of isolation that comes along with that. It’s not filling loneliness with someone else, it’s finding the same loneliness in another by total and utter happenstance, for they understand this incomprehensible thing that many simply never will. (With that in mind, my default verse will inevitably work towards a ship with delusionaid’s Wriothesley. This is exclusive to her portrayal of him and will not be written with any other.)  

Physical Encounters. Based on how exemplary care she takes of herself physically, denying herself of simple pleasures such as sweets (usually) because they can too easily create an addiction and ‘disrupt focus’, I continue this across the board. The human body has its inevitable cravings, and so I do believe she indulges in physical encounters to relieve herself of this. I do not see these as ships, and they take place before and in the early phases of her slow-forming relationship with Wriothesley. Some examples of contenders for this? Kaeya, Beidou— and no, Ningguang is and would never be included in this lineup. But never fret, this is simply a personal headcanon of mine and will never be forced on you if you write any of these characters. If this is something you're interested in looking into, along with its potential complexities of even a potential one-sided development, it's always worth a whisper, and who knows where we'll end up.

Just a quick PSA of sorts...

as the title says, this is just a little psa sort of post, but anyways… i just wanted to take a second and say that it's come to my attention that i'm probably a person who misjudges boundaries more easily than i thought i did… sure, i feel like most of you guys i'm mutuals with, and chat even a bit with ooc are people i'm close to-- but i guess sometimes i let the line for that blur a bit too much, and don't end up picking on the fact that the other person i'm talking with might not feel the same way i do…

so in relation to that-- i'd just like to ask all my mutuals, that if we're chatting about something, and i bring up something that makes you uncomfortable-- or i try to send/do go ahead and send you something that you didn't want me to-- please, please make that clear with me-- be a little blunt or rude if you feel that's what needed for me to get it, but just… be clear with me, and communicate if i've done something to mess up and overstep anywhere, please…

Oooh! These are both very interesting and insightful observations -- and both of them are correct!

I think music ties into the way I experience the world in general -- and that includes the people I love, yes! I definitely have at least one song/singer/even genre I associate to each important person in my life -- and sometimes even to recent friends or acquaintances. I also do this with characters and stories I love, but that's a bit more common, I believe 😂 oh, if someone were to burn a CD especially for me I'd propose marriage right then and there, ngl :')

I think you're spot on about the second assumption too, although it feels like something that should be confirmed from an outside source. I know I tend to pick up on accents very quickly -- whenever I spend even half an hour with someone who has a different accent than mine, I end up speaking just like them for a quite a while! 😂 it's not an intentional thing, just a thing I do, and it has been pointed out to me several times! Speech patterns and quirks fall into the same umbrella for me -- I pick them up easily and remember them well. And whenever I think about it, I have a lot of fun picking them apart and figuring out which phrases and cadences make someone sound like themselves :)

Kudos to you for your great insight! I'm kind of surprised these things can be picked up from my writing 😂 you're very observant! And thanks for sending your assumptions, this game is a lot of fun!
