Rough WIPs / doodles for DnD Qalaari ! We haven't started our campaign yet but I’m taking that time to try to figure out how she might look a little ! I’m not quite There™ yet in terms of showing how heavy and massive she is and feels (I really want her to feel like a draft horse... but with horns, because minotaur >:^) ) Her minotaur design is mainly based on 1) her Charr design from GW2 and 2) an animal called a takin ! They’re big & extremely cute goats that live around the Himalayas. I’m playing her as a Path of the Beast Barbarian - but she doesn't like raging so... it’ll be a tug of war between my and my DM to force me to use my full kit in fights >8^D Last picture is a little drawing of her and @ependasketchpad ‘s super cool tough lady, Tarja ! They’re taking a bit of a rest and down time so that Qalaa can engrave Tarja’s tusks 😊

You seem to draw a lot of Curse of Strahd. Loving all of them. I don't play much DnD and prefer other games but Strahd sorta lowkey speaks to my goth soul. Would you recommend it?
HAHA I sure do. ty!!
So, based on my personal experience the answer would be yes and no. It's one of the stronger modules, if not the strongest DnD module out there, but running it just by the adventure book is not something I'd recommend; plot holes, disorganized, women often get the short end of the stick... There is a whole subreddit dedicated to improving it, adding things on top, and other sources and supplements to make it a fleshed out world with depth. It's very much a diamond in the rough LOL Either way earlier editions of DnD Ravenloft and the domains of dread provide more fun gothic horror to play around with so I recommend looking into all of that stuff! It's got all the classic tropes and is truly rather dark for DnD. Low fantasy, high stakes!
Since I haven't finished the game as a player yet and as such don't know the entire original plotline, if anyone feels like adding their thoughts, by all means!

"'why does everyone assume it's always about sex' looks at the narrator" Neil says, looking directly into the screen.
Neil really out here calling out the fuckers (cough probably twitter omg who said that-) who just think Astarion is all 'lets fuck ;}' and doesn't even try to have moments outside of that and I'm HERE for it.

me, making a PC playlist: is Marina really an appropriate choice for an exhausted, four hundred year old grizzled war mage?
me, a split second later: what the fuck am I talking about. that's the demographic Marina makes music for.

the plot of my campaign? oh, you mean my player's theories that I've stolen and made them part of the story because they are way cooler than whatever I had in mind?
you mean *that* plot?

#I've played with irl atheists and catholics and everything in between#but it rarely feels like faith is a real factor for anyone-- DM or player#outside of‚ again‚ divine spellcasters and Big Epic Plot Things#I mean there are a couple of 'RAAAHGH FUCK THE GODS >:C' edgy backstory types but#no one is just Normally Culturally Religious and it's WEIRD#like it's not even a matter of faith in dnd! the gods are LITERALLY OBJECTIVELY PROVABLY REAL#so what does that MEAN for the average person! how does it shape language? business? culture?#where are the people wearing holy symbols like amulets-- or the way modern christians very casually wear crosses?#blessings over meals? prayers before bed? burnt offerings?#and like I enjoy thinking about world and culture building but I know that's A Whole Thing but even just like...#it doesn't feel like anyone believes in gods at all except clerics and paladins#like they DO because they factually exist but in the same way I 'believe in' like. the president of france.#like yeah he exists and is important to some people but has no bearing on my life whatsoever#that's such a fucking weird approach to the DIVINE in a polytheist world where those gods are YOUR CULTURE'S GODS??#I am bad at this myself but I'm not religious so it's harder for me to remember what Being Religious All The Time Casually is like lol#funny enough my character with the most intentionally religious background in this sense#is one of my ones who's ended up wrapped up in Big Plot God Things lmao#'aubree starts the campaign with a holy symbol of yondalla because of course she does why wouldn't she'#'oh okay well she's gonna get deeply and personally entangled with a bunch of death gods immediately' fdkjghkdf oh!! welp#you don't really pray to urogalan unless you're breaking ground for a new building or someone just died so it's STILL weird for her lol#but at least I had the framework there of 'oh yeah the gods exist and matter to me and my everyday life and culture' in general#about me#posts from twitter

i am BEGGING for more context on dima biting strahd back and how he reacted.
Oh, badly!
So, what happened was that Strahd took the form of one of our allies and lured Dima into the woods. He was more or less just getting information off of her (and, as I understand, was proooobably going to cast Modify Memory on her?) until something felt off, and Dima accused him of not being the ally, but someone else. He revealed himself and approached her as she backed away until she was up against the side of a rock.
She stabbed him through the heart. He kept moving along the blade until he was at the hilt of the sword and was right up in her face. I went into a fear-induced fugue state at that point, but he bit her as recompense for the stab.
This was the second time she'd been bitten by Strahd, so Dima yanked his head back and sank her teeth into him instead. The sword is still in him.
He was. Well. Surprised. And I think slightly amused, because he pulled her sword out, drained her nearly to death, and then took it with him. So, until last session, I was TWO SWORDS DOWN because he had taken both of them.
Dima told him she hated him, he told her something to the effect of "Better to occupy your mind than not at all" and fucked right off.

I started my D&D campaign back in April of 2020 shortly after the COVID Lockdown hit. I was bored out of my skull and stressed, and a friend had expressed his frustration with his own D&D group and I just went "Fuck it."
I hadn't played DnD since college. I had never GM'd a tabletop game. But I had nothing better to do. So I went on to Discord into, like, the three channels I'm active in and rounded up a gaggle of friends from FFXIV and from my old City of Heroes group. For my starter campaign I used the very first Eberron campaign ever published for I think 3e or 3.5e, converted to 5e, "The Forgotten Forge."
And three and a half years, multiple cases of COVID, two rounds of cancer and chemotherapy, four or five moves, three kidney stones, multiple bouts of depression, and a half dozen job changes, we finally finished the campaign at level 16, having convinced the Lord of Blades to devote his talents to building the new Warforged nation and healing the Mournlands using the unique techno-organic warforged plants and animals we'd discovered, instead of his original plan which was to absorb the power of a Creation Engine and a Demon Overlord into himself, achieve apotheosis, and drown the world in a tide of blood.
My original plan for the final battle has in large underlined letters the phrase "Biblically Accurate Chainsaw Angel" and included a speech with lines like "LET THE SEAS BOIL AND THE SKIES FALL! LET THE WORLD BURN!"
Also probably ending up with the players picking the Red, Blue or Green endings from the End-o-Matic 9000.
But that didn't happen.
So instead, the campaign that started with our little group of heroes stumbling onto the murder of a professor with the clues to a hidden workshop, ended with the wedding of Seeker the Warforged Artificer, the man who'd talked the Lord of Blades down (despite having a Charisma of 8) and now holds the title of Maestro Seeker, is an advisor to the national leadership, and is the teacher of a whole new batch of warforged, and the warforged medic Solace, an NPC whose existence began as a joke about Seeker having a whirlwind romance with a medic in the space of about 23 minutes while the rest of the party were running errands.
Hot damn was that a lot of work. Three and a half years, and despite it starting in modules by the second I'd decided I didn't like the story as it was written, threw it out, and told my own story. Featuring friendly little fire elementals named Phil, packs of extremely patriotic and laddish mimics named Jimmy, an eight foot robotic sweetheart named Friend whose primary weapon was an equally massive tower shield and her totally-not-boyfriend warforged druid/allosaurus/swearasaurus Din, a wrestling match with a hobgoblin that nearly turned lethal when an 18 foot tall warforged titan came in with the steel chair, an alligator with a gun, and banishing the elemental dragon powering a flying battleship while A) the team was still on the battleship and B) it was still several hundred feet in the air and C) it was the only thing keeping it there... it's done.
And it was all worth it. God I love these guys. So here's to you, Katie, Jacquie, Mike, Stan, and Will. I'll see you all next week for our next adventure.
