Collection of minor observations I've made while exploring ENA: Dream BBQ
To preface, only a portion of these observations are likely to have any lore or thematic significance. This list is mainly to document aspects of the game I found notable, small as they may be.
In the settings, the description for the sprint key is strangely written in first-person. No other keybinds are described in this manner, and instead use impersonal wordage.
Tumblr media
All Doors emit a "shining" note when in close enough proximity. Notably, this noise is absent from the Lonely Door in the ending sequence of the game. Perhaps it indicates a Door is active?
The "shining" noise is classified as music.
You can go inside the Receptionist's TVs to look at all the display frames
Tumblr media
Directly before entering the casino, you can hear a sound similar to a plane's engine. It's distinct from the AC hum also present throughout the building.
Three instances of the game pointing out small but conspicuous things about the environment. Definitely intended to inspire questioning towards these otherwise overlookable aspects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bubbles in the Shaman's Seal House pop when you run into them. Quite fun!
All the 'buildings' in the Uncanny Streets periodically emit strange mechanical creaking sounds, steam venting, and distant conversation.
Alex has toilets stacked in his trash hoard. The statue atop feels like an allusion to Theodora in the Bathroom.
Tumblr media
'Three, missing fourth' is a reoccuring motif.
three hanging dolls, the fourth seen only during the end sequence.
Tumblr media
three pillars in the smoke room, the fourth destroyed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
three doors (Bed, Lonely, and Crowd), the fourth (Horse Door) out of commission.
The pillars have eyes that open when the smoke is turned off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
did something explode here? Also, this whole section of the Bathroom is missing in its greyscale variant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
good lort there's been a train accident. Call the ambuless.
Tumblr media
ohhhh theyre also burying people. Oh well!
Tumblr media
The ending sequence Outworld is full of strange little music snippets, sporadically placed throughout all sections. None of these are classified as music by the settings slider.
the embellishments on this screen outside the Purge Event resemble the sun-headed Delay Lama people in the Core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite the Bathroom's association with toilets, there are no toilets actually present within the Bathroom. That probably means something.
Does having an aspiration granted mean to throw it away? Or does this flavour text indicate that ENA does not have faith in her own aspirations?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this one absolutely isn't important, I just like her posture here. Exactly the kind of insane pose I'd expect
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bells are another reoccuring topic. I assume only some of these instances have significance, but it's notable how often they appear nonetheless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you first enter the (non greyscale) Bathroom, you can hear faint whispering around you. This whispering vanishes when you backtrack to the starting area after Theodora permits you to enter the well.

In the span of two weeks, I have now encountered so many separate instances both in person and online of people talking about dnp’s body weight…….??????? mostly dan’s, and I don’t want to get into specifics, but the comments have truly run the full gamut, and all I have to say is please stop. no matter what you feel like the tone of what you’re saying is, it isn’t helpful. it isn’t kind. It isn’t productive. It isn’t caring or supportive or celebratory or whatever the fuck. it’s weird and puts bodies in black and white boxes and treats them as though they by default deserve to be under scrutiny and aren’t given leeway to change or evolve without comment and should be held to some singular standard. and yeah it’s especially weird when the comment is explicitly critical, but the “positive” comments about someone’s weight or the comments of comparison don’t land well either. Idk I feel like I’m losing my mind bc I went years not seeing rly any weight talk and all of a sudden it feels like open season?

I love your artwork so much! Your colors are so vibrant and none of the white speckles in the paper ever shows, its so impressive and I really dig it! I was wondering if you use any sort of blending medium? Like baby oil or anything? Either way, I really enjoy looking at your artwork and I'm always excited to see whatever you'll make next
I use a colorless blender (prismacolor, which is wax-based so baby oil probably wouldnt work) but my scanner is also rly bad about picking up white specks in a way photographing the art with my phone isnt, so I usually have to do some digital editing to get rid of them as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do this by duplicating the layer, setting the one on top to "darken," and using the mixer brush to blend out the white spots + just use the eyedropper tool to select the color of that area (needs to be a slightly lighter shade of it) and color over the white spots with the brush tool
Tumblr media
i edited a small bit of the original scan to show what i mean
original:

with the edited layer:
Tumblr media
heres how it looks set to normal instead of darken, I used both the mixing brush and regular brush just to demo it

why do we beastify luo binghe when turning shen yuan into beast is right there for the taking
he wouldnt even really give a shit except for how "naked" he might be, and all i can imagine him doing with his new form is cataloguing all its traits and pretending to be scary so he can tend to whatever castle/estate/magic kingdom he got beast!cursed into management over without being bothered (im talking howl's moving castle sophie levels of "your face finally suits you" acceptance)
binghe showing up as the beauty who has to seduce the 'monster' interests me so much more, especially if u throw in a zesty bit of angst with everyone in town calling binghe a 'beast' for turning down all his marriage proposals, being run out of town for various crimes he never committed just bc he's the orphan and the easy target, who then meets someone so kind and yet so twisted looking, who has basically cursed himself into his current state, and having to teach each other that who they are is not what they are
i think it would also fit lovingly into binghe's whole thing about wanting someone to finally choose him, on purpose, and for shen yuan to be the one to say that he always will and not have the curse just fade away or disappear, mayhe it creeps up in small ways on days sy has trouble believing in himself, but then a touch from binghe, or a smile, and he can feel his claws retreat, or his fur smooth back out into skin
as long as someone like binghe can smile at him like that, he cant really be so bad, can he?

New Findings For Alexander Hamilton’s Artillery Company!!
Today I came across “new” (new to me, anyway--nor have I seen a Hamilton biographer or scholar mention this) Captain Hamilton information and I feel bad for the people within my vicinity inside my campus library who had to hear my shocked squeal.
Within the Henry Knox Papers of the Gilder Lehrman Collection held by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is an “Artillery record book” which was written by Colonel Samuel Shaw for Knox’s regiment of artillery between January 12, 1777 and March 24, 1777. The book itself is only 16 pages (which includes the cover page), but it contains all sorts of troop movements, artillery inventory, and other notes.
The following (under the cut) is a chronological rundown of all the times Hamilton or his men are mentioned in the book, along with the images themselves (as unfortunately the database that the Knox Papers were digitized to, American History 1493-1945, is limited to institutional access. However, it can be found here):
Tumblr media
First up, on page five (seen above), Colonel Shaw wrote a series of "memos," or tasks needing completion. One of these, as seen at the top of the page, included "To enquire of Capt Hamilton whether his men were entitled to the Bounty of Ten Dollars which they received of Lieut Reed 1 Jany [January] 1777 --". The start of the new year came of course on the heels of the Battle of Trenton fought on December 26, 1776, wherein Hamilton's cannons played a major role.
Tumblr media
Next (and the most interesting to me), on page twelve (seen above) Shaw wrote a series of troop movements. Dated February 3, 1777, the colonel wrote that "Lieut [John] Bean, with 8 men of Capt Hamilton's Coy [Company] came [up?] from Bucks County and marched to join the Detachment with Genl [John] Sullivan and Capt [Sebastian] Bauman --". At this time, Hamilton was still in recovery from the illness he developed prior to Trenton, and the only other remaining officer in his company was his Third Lieutenant Thomas Thompson. This would thus mean that Hamilton and Thompson were left to watch over those that remained with the company while Bean and eight enlisted men were away.
Tumblr media
Lastly, on the final page of the record book (seen above) a series of discharges for men in Hamilton's company were written on March 24, 1777. By that time, Alexander Hamilton had joined Washington's staff as an aide-de-camp. Colonel Shaw, and another person who has not been identified, explicitly wrote:
Morris Town March 24, 1777
This is to certify that Lieut John Bean has Received his Discharge this day Sign'd by General Knox, N B the above person Belong'd to the late Capt Hamilton's Compy [Company] of the State of N[ew] York Likewise has 24 days pay due --
March 24, 1777 Discharged Martian Laulen[,] Isaac Johnston & Will'm [William] Hackett Matross's in the Late Capt Hamilton's Compy, Rais'd in the State of New York By order of General Knox . . . .
Also had seven men of the above mentioned compy Qualifyed [Qualified] to be true to the Independent States of America --
Note: the names of the matrosses discharged were cross-referenced with the names found in Alexander Hamilton's artillery company pay book for making my above transcription.
This entire record makes me extremely happy. I have new dates and more minute details and therefore a more concrete timeline surrounding Hamilton and the men of his company, yay!! Lately I have become very interested in the company's continuing service in the American Revolution after Hamilton's departure, and this record just gave me some fascinating information that links to some other information I have found on the whereabouts of some of these men written about above. But this is daring to open a can of worms that should be saved for a later post.
Frankly, it does not surprise me that I have not read about this record previously. It is so detailed and routine that it doesn't stand out necessarily on its own in the wider scope of things. However, as regards The American Icarus (and another project I may or may not be considering tackling?), this new information is very interesting and helpful. And I hope someone else here finds it interesting too.

Hey um? So you wavier (and other ship of the guy I can't remember) fans (if you exist???) Yall do realize if Netflix had an issue with the content of the book they would've a) not have employed the author or b) made them rewrite it, right? Like, are yall aware of the editorial and commission process????
