India train crash: At least 280 killed and hundreds injured 

It happened about 130 miles southwest of Kolkata, in Odisha's Balasore district, at around 7pm local time on Friday June 2nd. It is the country's deadliest rail accident in more than two decades.

Between 10 and 12 carriages of one train derailed and debris fell on a nearby track, said rail spokesperson Amitabh Sharma. The debris was hit by another train coming from the opposite direction and up to three carriages from that train also derailed.

Fire services chief Sudhanshu Sarangi told the Press Trust of India that more than 850 people were injured - many of them seriously. A third train carrying freight was also reportedly involved, but authorities have not yet confirmed it. Rescuers were still trying to free hundreds of people feared trapped in carriages on Saturday morning, said Balasore authorities.

Odisha chief secretary Pradeep Jena tweeted that more than 200 ambulances had been sent to the scene. Videos showed police moving bodies covered in white cloths off the tracks and the army has now been sent to help rescue efforts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site to speak to officials on Saturday.  Sudhanshu Sarangi, director general of Odisha Fire Services, had earlier said 288 had died.

JEE-Main: 23 candidates bag 100 score in first edition of exam

Twenty-three candidates have bagged the perfect 100 score in the engineering entrance exam JEE-Main with a maximum of them being from Telangana, the National Testing Agency announced on Tuesday.

Over 11.70 lakh candidates had appeared for the first edition of the crucial exam.

Among the candidates who scored 100 NTA scores, seven are from Telangana, two from Haryana, three each from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, two from Delhi and one each from Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

According to NTA officials, NTA score is not the same as percentage of marks obtained but normalised scores.

“NTA scores are normalised scores across multi-session papers and are based on the relative performance of all those who appeared for the examination in one session. The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees,” a senior official explained.

INDIAN ELECTION COMMISSION ANNOUNCES DATES FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS

The Election Commission for India announced on Saturday the dates for the coming General Elections, to be conducted in seven phases beginning on April 19th.

According to reporting on the announcement, more than 970 million Indians are expected to vote in the coming elections at over 1 million polling stations across the country.

Speaking at a Press conference covering the election scheduling, Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, said elections will run through the 1st of June, with vote counting to be conducted on June 4th.

Acknowledging what he called "major challenges" posed by the elections, Kumar said the biggest concerns were with bribing, threats, misinformation and violations of the model code of conduct for elections.

Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who belongs to the Hindu Nationalist BJP Party, seeks a third term, facing a challenge from an alliance of more than two dozen Parties belonging to the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the opposition Indian National Congress Party who held power from the time of the country's liberation from the British empire in 1947, until the BJP's first National election win in May of 2014.

Modi and the BJP, for their part, have set a goal for winning 370 seats in the Indian Parliament, and 400 in total for the alliance it leads.

Previously, in the 2019 General Elections, Modi's BJP Party won 303 out of 543 seats in the lower house of Parliament, its best performance since the Party's formation in 1980.
