hi wait did I read your tags right, you made your own version of a soundgasm website?
kinda? i mean it's not "my own version of soundgasm" because it's just my personal site (so like you can't make an account and upload stuff there) but yeah, go check out https://listen.rosepetalkitty.cc, i made it all myself from scratch because i wanted to be able to have more control over the backend and the ui.
plus it lets me edit my descriptions and tags, replace audio files if i fuck something up, and add extra stuff that soundgasm doesn't have, like collections/series, automatic messages on discord when i post new audios, maybe in the future a way to have a play queue, possibly a "variants" feature for different versions of the same audio, better metrics (instead of just "how many clicks has this audio gotten since i posted it" i can see stuff like "during which hours do i get the most traffic", "how many clicks has this audio gotten this week", etc.). and also it's in my color scheme. so uh. yeahg. maybe it's more accurate to describe it as my equivalent to Shibby's "Shibbydex" or Miss Lilith's "Lilith Unleashed".
oh and btw, for my petals who aren't already aware, im no longer posting my audios on soundgasm for obvious reasons (my own site is just way way better for me to work with and as far as im aware its better for my listeners too) so if you're looking for my files in the future please go there. all the old ones from sg are on my new site, but im not going to delete them from sg, im just not going to post new things there.

i installed open video downloader, a FLOSS utility for ripping youtube videos, which is such an easy to use & convenient program, & it reminded me of the campaign i went on (completely unsuccessfully) a couple years ago to get clickless mouse added to the patron computers in my public library, because i had watched multiple older adults struggle immensely to double-click on our computers, went looking for an easy solution for them, & found that someone had already thoughtfully written an elegant & adaptable little program, initially intended as an accessibility tool for a particular friend of theirs. this is why i love FLOSS projects so much: they're usually personal passion projects, at least at the outset, & they reflect such powerfully pro-social values that even when they have nothing to offer me in particular i am delighted by them. thank u to all FLOSS devs <3

Two months remaining
Sonatype's OSSRH will reach end-of-life on 30 June, forcing me to change how I distribute my open-source JVM libraries. I've known about this deadline for about a month now, but so far I haven't made any progress migrating to Central Portal, its replacement.
Currently I have about 25 projects that publish via OSSHR, so this is potentially a major headache for me.

ok the second last chapter was the best one because in fairness it actually did address encoded biases in both generative and predictive AI datasets and violent outcomes for oppressed groups in policing, healthcare, resource distribution, etc. and it did make mention of the horrific exploitation of workers in the neocolonial world in cleaning datasets, moderating virtual spaces, tagging, transcribing, and other digital sweatshop work.
but the problem is that the solutions offered are more women in STEM and better regulations... with the end goal always always always of accepting and facilitating the existence and forward motion of these technologies, just with more equitable working conditions and outcomes. early in the book, there's a great aside about how generative AI being used for new forms of image based sexual abuse causes incredible harm to those who experience misogyny and also is gobbling up energy and water at exponential rates to do so. but that environmental angle gets a few sentences and is never spoken of again in favour of boosting a kinder, more inclusive inevitable AI inundated future.
but like — the assumption that these technologies are both inevitable and reformable makes all the solutions offered untethered and idealistic!
profit is mentioned throughout the book, but the system of profit generation isn't mentioned by name once. so the problems of some machine learning systems get attributed to patriarchy and profit as if those two things are separate and ahistorical, instead of products of class society with its most recent expression in capitalism.
but yeah I mean it's not presenting itself as a Marxist analysis of AI and gendered violence so I know I'm asking it to do things it was never setting out to do. but still, it's wild how when you start to criticise technology as having class character it becomes glaring how few critiques of AI, both generative and predictive, are brave enough to actual state the obvious conclusions: not all technology can be harnessed to help the collective working class. some technology is at its root created to be harmful to the collective wellbeing of the working class and the natural ecosystems we are in and of.
technology isn't inherently agnostic. it isn't neutral and then progressive if harnessed correctly, and that idealist vision is only going to throw the people and entities capitalism most exploits into the furnace of the steam engine powering the technocapitalist death drive.
you can't build a future without misogyny using tools designed to capitalise on increasingly granular data gathered from ever-increasing tools of surveillance, to black-box algorithmic substitutions for human interaction and knowledge, to predate on marginalised communities to privatise and destroy their natural resources and public services, and to function on exploited labour of unending exposure to the most traumatising and community-destroying content. and we have to be ruthless in our analysis to determine which AI technologies are designed and reliant on those structures — because not all are!
you have to be brave enough to go through all that analysis and say the thing: if we want a future of technological progress that is actually free from misogyny, we can't build it with those tools that are built by and for the capitalist class and are inextricable from their interests and the oppression of other groups of people that capitalism needs to perpetuate.
some technology is not fit for purpose if our purpose is collective liberation.

The developers i work with are asking chatgpt questions about my infrastructure that are in our docs. Unsurprisingly they are getting bad advice for our particular setup, and are bothering my team with a bunch of questions about if the advice is right and what would happen if they ran those commands.

You know what. I'm gonna be old for a second.
Android smart phones used to come built in with this app called Google Play Music.
It let you curate your own library if you had CDs or EPs you wanted to upload to your account, and it would host your music library (for free, using your Google storage). It also had a built in radio type listening side to it, it was basically Spotify.
And that app, despite the Google branding, was spectacular. I could listen to my music no matter what device I used, no ads, and it would even use temporary storage on your device to load a couple songs you listened to a lot from your library or a short playlist or whatever songs you listened to last.
But then, a couple years ago, they changed the app to YouTube Music. And let me tell you. Worst app I've ever touched. No more personal music library unless you already had one already, you had to jump through hoops and micro transactions to get back normal features you would expect and that you used to have for free (like shuffle, or offline listening, or playing in the background--ugh, hell I miss playing music in the background on my phone and not needing to have it loaded to my phone), and the most heinous thing ever, if you wanted to listen to your own songs--songs that you chose and wanted to listen to--you had to listen to ads in between (even if they were songs you had bought) and on top of that there was a random chance (and a high chance at that) that the song after the one you wanted to listen to from your personal library was some other random songs that the record label or artists had paid to promote and you didn't buy. Didn't matter what genre it was, if you were listing to ambient rock or jazz, there was a chance the next thing to pop into your ears was some loud and obtuse hip hop song about having sex and getting money (I'm not digging on hip hop and rap as a genre or having sex or getting money--most of that is fine, it's just that there's also a lot of low effort music by posers in the hip hop genre).
Anyway.
I haven't really just listened to music since. I haven't had a good way to. I could buy an mp3 player, but it was so nice to have it on my phone. I had a perfect system.
A good app died because it wasn't monetized to hell and back. I died because it wasn't tracking user data and selling it to anyone that would buy. It died because it didn't have ads in it.
I would pay, granted I would prefer a single payment, for an app that did everything or even just most of the things that Google Play Music did. I miss listening to music.
