The Philosophy of Invariance
The philosophy of invariance examines the concept of constancy or unchanging nature within various contexts, including science, mathematics, ethics, and metaphysics. This philosophical exploration seeks to understand what remains constant amidst change and why such constancies are significant for our comprehension of reality, knowledge, and truth.
Key Concepts in the Philosophy of Invariance
Definition of Invariance:
Concept: Invariance refers to properties or principles that remain unchanged under specific transformations or conditions.
Argument: Identifying invariances helps in understanding the fundamental nature of systems and theories, providing a stable foundation for analysis and interpretation.
Invariance in Science and Mathematics:
Physical Laws: Many physical laws, such as the laws of motion and conservation laws, are considered invariant under transformations like time shifts or spatial rotations.
Symmetry: Invariance is closely related to symmetry in physics and mathematics. For example, the invariance of physical laws under certain symmetries leads to conservation laws according to Noether's theorem.
Mathematical Constants: Constants like π (pi) and e (Euler's number) are examples of invariance in mathematics, holding the same value across various contexts.
Invariance in Metaphysics:
Universal Principles: In metaphysics, invariance pertains to principles or truths that remain constant across possible worlds or different contexts.
Identity and Change: Philosophers explore how identity can persist over time despite changes, focusing on the invariant core that defines an entity.
Ethical Invariance:
Moral Principles: The idea that certain ethical principles are invariant, holding true regardless of cultural or situational differences.
Universal Ethics: This approach argues for the existence of universal moral truths that apply to all rational beings.
Theoretical Debates and Implications
Role of Invariance in Scientific Theories:
Concept: Invariance as a criterion for the validity and robustness of scientific theories.
Argument: Scientific theories that exhibit invariance under transformation are often considered more fundamental and reliable.
Philosophical Implications of Mathematical Invariance:
Concept: The philosophical significance of invariant mathematical properties and structures.
Argument: The constancy of mathematical truths supports the notion of an objective mathematical reality, independent of human perception.
Ethical Relativism vs. Invariant Ethics:
Concept: The debate between ethical relativism, which denies invariant moral principles, and invariant ethics, which upholds them.
Argument: While ethical relativism emphasizes cultural and contextual differences, invariant ethics seeks universal moral truths applicable to all.
Metaphysical Invariance and Identity:
Concept: The persistence of identity amidst change and the metaphysical basis for invariance.
Argument: Philosophers debate whether there are essential properties that remain invariant to preserve identity through change.
The philosophy of invariance explores the concept of constancy across different domains, from science and mathematics to ethics and metaphysics. By understanding what remains unchanged amidst transformations, this philosophical inquiry provides insights into the fundamental nature of reality, the stability of scientific theories, and the universality of ethical principles.

I continue to be baffled by the occasional posts I see from people ranting about things like "how can you even think to adapt Sonic Adventure 2 without Rouge or Amy?" and "I hope they do justice to [any number of things from SA2] when they adapt it!" and all I can think is...why do you think it's going to be an adaptation of SA2? Just because Shadow is in it?
The first movie was not an adaptation of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. The second movie was not an adaptation of Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The Knuckles miniseries was not an adaptation of Sonic & Knuckles.
The third movie is going to be its own thing that draws on the games for inspiration. That's it.
Just...where is this coming from?
#sonic the hedgehog#shadow the hedgehog#sonic 3 movie#is not going to be a faithful adaptation#and that's okay#at least most of those people don't seem to be building up hopes that will be invariably dashed#but there's still that smaller percentage that's probably going to be very angry when the movie isn't what they wanted#I'm still looking forward to it tho

I know this is a very unpopular opinion in the Dick Grayson fan community, but I really don't think Dick is more emotionally mature than Bruce. I think it's just easier to overlook Dick's issues in part because Dick rarely turns the charm off and in part because most people are used to thinking of him as being very young. And of course he was extremely "mature for his age" when he was younger - but so was Bruce.
Dick still has a lot of the same issues emotionally and in his close personal relationships as he did when he was a kid/teen, many of which are notably similar to the issues Bruce has - to the point that it's been pointed out to him repeatedly by the people closest to him. Like I have a hard time thinking of anyone who's been really close to him who hasn't said that at least once for one reason or another, and often more than once for multiple different reasons.
I'm just... not super fond of the way fandom often dichotomizes them as good and ideal traumatized guy vs bad and reprehensible traumatized guy. Especially when one of their overarching narrative themes from their creation to now is that they're mirrors of each other, more alike than they are different.
#this is honestly the main reason why i've mostly stopped talking about negative aspects of bruce's character#i would invariably get people jumping on my posts to talk about what a piece of shit bruce is#meanwhile if i make a post about negative aspects of dick's character people will occasionally jump on them to defend him to me#as if my icon and name and virtually every other post don't make it super clear that this is a dick grayson fan blog lmfao#i would genuinely love to talk about bruce with the candidness i do dick but every time someone twists what i'm saying#and makes it feel really shitty#vintagerobin.txt#bruce wayne#batman#meta

the fact that irving canonically survives through the end of asunder to be at wynne's funeral is so fucking funny to me. nothing but love and respect for MY unstoppable cockroach morally grey machiavellian mage dad!!! he's survived in his position through multiple attempted rites of annulment and blood mage plots popping up left right and center around him. the chantry keeps trying to stamp him out but his dodge game is simply out of this world, divine. civil wars, political machinations and minefields, chantry atrocities, this wily old motherfucker is dodging and weaving his way through it all, not-quite-no-hits-taken-running-it-but-honestly-close-enough-under-the-circumstances style. if solas does succeed in tearing down the veil I would fully believe that one of the like three people still alive at the end of it all would be a very weary 90 year old first enchanter irving going 'oh this shit again huh'. the maker has cursed him for his hubris and his paperwork is never finished (affectionate, it's fine he canonically loves paperwork)
#we should have had the option to leave him in the fade instead of hawke or a warden#he would've just annoyedly shuffled his way back out of there a week later#dragon age#dragon age origins#first enchanter irving#he must be SO annoying to the chantry because it's heavily implied he's made his playground#out of tirelessly finding technicalities and loopholes to exploit that they can't *quite* call him on without domino effects going off#I think first enchanter in the circle system at origins times is a position that invariably and inevitably leaves you morally compromised#but I feel he really does his best within the rules he's given to play with and personally i love him a bit for that. and also#for being an unkillable lil shit. insufferable. inconquerable in his 'I'm about to be such an annoyance to you' impish spirit.#the I'm going to suffer but guess what. so are you of it all. traumatize the chantry back#I just imagine sophia sending letters home right before the vote for independence like '...dad I am hearing some INSANE rumours out here#what the actual fuck is going on back home???'#and he's like 'nothing that you need to worry about sweetie just keep living your best life and have fun killing darkspawn <3'#(there's something that makes me feel So much about how consistently his stance is like... 'you'll always be welcome here#but the circle doesn't *need* you; go be a warden and live your life'. he managed to fineagle freedom for you somehow and won't let you#turn and glance back. not even once. I feel somehow both so abandoned and so incredibly loved it's wild)#oc: sophia amell

television drastically shortening the amount of episodes for shows really is ruining what would otherwise be Good stories because i feel like most of the complaints this new season of doctor who is receiving are due to things that could've been fixed by articulation and lengthier build-up
#doctor who#fifteenth doctor#if thirteen and fifteen were given the same amount of actual time the other doctors had i'm sure people would be singing a different song#but i get that that's also to be expected. like most people aren't going to like something based on what COULD be there#they just take things at face value and the face value is that 8 episodes is almost invariably not enough for a season of tv

The fact they keep referencing Eddie’s lying on the show and in interviews has me giggling and kicking my legs and twirling my hair.
It’s almost like we’re meant to read into the fact Eddie’s not always being truthful - with himself and others. Almost like, I don’t know, him going to confessional and telling a priest that he lied to everyone in his life and then later him telling that same priest that he’s straight might possibly be showing us Eddie not being truthful with himself or others!!
#queer Eddie is coming#the lying aspect of Eddie’s arc is so interesting to me#because they’re really exploring all the different ways you can lie#and ultimately lying has been shown to be something ingrained in Eddie - right from childhood#and I hope they explore why that is a bit in these next few episodes#as a part of his rebuilding himself - so he gets to a point where he chooses to stop lying to himself and embraces who he is#and let’s the world see that#heteronormativity is the biggest lie there is - but Eddie’s getting out#and it’s funny- because we see him being his most truthful with buck - and that’s a loud choice to be making#especially in these last few episodes where we’ve seen him being more honest and truthful with buck than ever - and the way they sits#in counterpoint to everything else happening in his life#Eddie staring out loud that he has to stop lying - that’s telling the audience that there’s more and bigger deeper set lies going on#that it’s not just about the specific lies he’s made in the episode. lying to oneself is invariably about queerness when it’s used in media#it’s a common trope and one that does offer a lot of potential and opportunity!#911 spoilers#911 abc#eddie diaz#evan buckley#buddie

Writing a paper about 19th-century Poland will have you asking questions like, "What even is she?"

i DO think it's going to be funny to watch the dragon age fandom explode when people finally get their hands on veilguard. and realize all of the companions have Opinions
#i get being on the hype train because hell yeah but man. MAN#some elaborate headcanons out there that will invariably be contradicted by the game#not that you shouldn't have fun with it!#i just remember the promo hype around bull & blackwall- ride the bull scale the wall memes etc but they're some of the least popular dai LIs#not that i don't love them personally. but cullen and solas sweep w dai girlies and it's a common sentiment that#a LOT of women-into-men would've been ticked or at least disappointed if solas & cullen hadn't been added w the extra dev time#anyway i feel bad for the characters that will fall the furthest from their pedestal 😔😔 rip#dragon age the veilguard#dragon age

i wanted to explain myself to myself in an understandable way. i gave shape to my fears and made excuses. i varied my velocities, watched myselves sleep. something's not right about what i'm doing but i'm still doing it — living in the worst parts, ruining myself.
richard siken, war of the foxes
#this is less about his monstrosity and more about his pursuit of control. which are definitely conflated yes#but i think of his perceivable monstrosity as 1) not really being specifically about what he was doing#and 2) so invariable to his being that it was logical that it would be used within his attempt at independence#this is about his attempt to get there. it's about his addiction and his and ruby's relationship. the fact that he knows he's been raped#and how it relates to its monstrosity rather than looking at it in a synonymous way#am i making sense#anyway i want to get back into making these again#sam winchester#4.21#reddo#ww.png

@greetings-inferiors idk how to say this without seeming stupid so ill just say it. i dont know how differentiation works anymore.
#i dont need it so its ok#the differentiation operator is unbounded#also nilpotent on the space of all polynomial functions#also also it has an invariant space generated by e^x#as well as one generated by sin and cos#thats all i need to know#chain rule? product rule? idk them sorry

OpenAI's "o1" reasoning model is incapable by design of saying anything without thinking it over first.
Which results in cute (?) moments like this, where – in response to the single word "Thanks!" – it says the same "any more questions" sound byte that all its siblings say, but only after five seconds of careful, verbose inner deliberation
(N. B. the user only gets to see a summary o1's chain of thought, not the thing itself. The blockquote under "Thought for 5 seconds" is this summary; the original chain of thought was presumably somewhat longer, given that o1 can write ~30 words per second)
#ai tag#btw “Addressing the invariance of divergences” relates to the topic of the conversation before this#and looks like a mistake on the part of their very-janky summarizer model
