i...love subversion. and in stars and time does it so well...
"the chosen one" wasn't actually chosen by fate, but by circumstance, and is terrified that shes a fraud
big strong dumb guy isnt actually stupid, and kind of hates that people think he is
callous older character is actually incredibly caring in her own, slightly abrasive way, and proves she keeps an eye out for everyone
edgy loner rogue is actually very tired of being alone and craves connection to a dangerous degree
the naive young child isnt actually naive at all, they understand the danger they are in, and they understand the danger the others are in because of them
the guide themselves is lost and just as scared and the protagonist.

Riz Gukgak and his bloody hands
SUCH a metal visual and motif. Kalina, Baron, they tease him for it, they twist it into one of his worst qualities, just as they belittle that he his heart, leverage his fear that he cannot love anyone enough.
Riz Gukgak loves. He will claw himself to shreds on love. He will dig through reality, lacerating himself on crystal, just to help his childhood friend. He will hiss at the devil, he will bite out eyes, he will do anything to help his friends feel safe. He will attempt to eat an entire dragon. Out of love for a father he barely knew.
"That’s you saying “I love you” to the people who matter to you the most."

the ending montage of barbie genuinely shook me to my core because it says "womanhood is not all pain and suffering. it can be joyous and loving and fun and carefree and a godlike experience to live through. and even if we exist in a world that says that we are not worth more than our body parts, we are not defined by our suffering. living life as a woman or even just identifying with certain parts of it continues to be an amazing and beautiful way to live this wonderful life" and hey maybe i needed that a bit

Something something it's actually soooo wild that none of the alliances went up in the flames of betrayal this time around. Something something even Gem who constantly pointed out how this was her first game and she didn't know some of the unspoken rules didn't even think to betray her team at any point as has been custom in literally every other season. Something something it's actually uniquely heartbreaking how every team ended while they were still loyal to each other and how they went down swinging together or wished they had been. Something something they're learning to play the game by their own rules but the person who won was still the only one who didn't have any allies and that was the entire point-

(slowly unhinging) it wasn't the earrings and the touching that made hirano realise the entire actual depth of kagi's feelings for him. it was basketball.

im gonna try to explain this in the least unhinged way.
villain is a big scary powerful person. there is a whole team of heroes and they just can't defeat this one guy. but then a bigger, more powerful villain comes along, and the original villain offers a truce. they'll join the hero team and work with them to get rid of this threat.
seeing villain's powers from upclose is even more terrifying, but very useful. villain, on their own, can effortlessly demolish the enemies the hero team struggled to defeat before. it's quite... efficient, to have villain on the team. it's kind of great.
..too great.
the leader of the hero team is starting to notice that the rest of the team are getting a bit too attached. theyre flocking to villain all the time, asking for help and stuff. too quick to let their guard down around someone who's still acting like kind of an asshole and was setting buildings on fire just a month ago. the rookies the leader was trying to train are now hanging around villain, asking for tricks and tips and watching in awe whenever villain shows them something. in meetings when leader is trying to explain the plan, whenever villain has another idea, the entire team supports them more. even if villain doesnt have an idea and is just sitting there quietly, the team asks for their opinion anyway.
leader is fuming.
eventually, they defeat the bigger threat. its time for them to part ways again, and leader is eager to kick villain out of their base — but the team doesnt want to let go.
when villain gives a mocking grin and says "well, only one way to resolve this! come with me, then." several people step forward

something i really like in six of crows is that although the 6 of them are a group, they're allowed to do things without everyone else in that group of 6. like when they broke matthias out of hellgate, it was mainly kaz, inej, and nina out of the 6 of them. kaz and wylan are paired up to steal something from van eck's house while inej and nina went to the silos and jesper, matthias, and kuwei stayed at the hideout. and it talks of practicality and how kaz really plans these things up to their abilities but it also helps flesh out these different character dynamics and the character relationships that we all love. and in the show, kaz, inej, and jesper have become this trio, not because they were the earliest crows/dregs who lived in the slat like in the books so they were naturally closer with one another, but because they were the only crows and dregs we knew and it felt like they did all their heists together, like they had a reputation of doing everything together in the barrel. we barely got to see rotty, specht, people like big bolliger and muzzen interact with them and help them out on heists. and assuming that the shot of the 5 crows on that rooftop is them getting matthias out of hellgate, makes me think the show is taking away that aspect of them too. it feels as if their rushing the crows because the first time they're all actually in the same scene is when they got matthias out of hellgate and kaz was telling everyone about the ice court heist. and even when they went and did it, they were all pretty separated the whole time. they separated prison cells. nina and inej were supposed to enter with the menagerie, kaz and matthias walked across the moat, jesper and wylan worked on breaking the gate. i just think to be able to get these character dynamics that make the crows so special, the show has to divide them more and focus less on the six of crows, and more on the six crows

trobed is so interesting. one of troy's main character arc is how he's constantly trying to prove himself as a man he wants to be manly he wants to be masculine enough but at the same time he can never balance the perfect manly man that lives inside his head and the emotional highly sensitive one that he is. meanwhile we have abed who's main struggle is to explain his emotions in a way that others will understand and comprehend their feelings but he also has self esteem falling out of his butt girls like him and also he's worn wigs and played olivia stick and worn a dress and make up and no one even batted an eye. and they're best friends and understand each other in a way that no one else does. but also they're in love

Everytime I see someone mention how much akutagawa talks up Atsushi when going against a villain I automatically think of that one meme where the guy slaps the roof of a car and goes "you would t believe how many miles this baby's got" or whatever the quote was

We can’t actually run from things we have to do, we can’t just drive away and start a new life somewhere else, we can’t change our lives to make them better in the blink of an eye, i can’t take away your problems or get rid of the world’s issues for you but i can hold you in my arms and talk to you in a soft voice and try to give you as much peace and safety as i can get you

I think one of the things about the magicians that I love so much is the emphasis on friendship + platonic love. there are various love triangles & hook ups & long term relationships & will-they-wont-theys within the show but the underlying thing between all the romantic & sexual relationships is always platonic ones. and not to mention all of the wonderful loving relationships that were never romantic and/or sexual to begin with.
just. Quinton was onto smth when he said he wanted a magic system that works based on love [spoiler: it does]

i think it's really interesting how after jeremy gets the squip, his outfits become more black and white and there is like. no sign of any of the bright blue from his cardqigan and shirt in the beginning until voices in my head when the squip is deactivated
