I know I was JUST in your dms, but if you're still taking ideas for the emotion wheel— Legion and isolated? I have so much emotion for that crazy machine
Legion - (no longer?) isolated
You might’ve thought I’d forgotten about you but no! I am still doing my best!
The emotion wheel thingy and no text version below!
why don’t you experience a story about monsters exiled and reviled by society who find someone who falls for them wholly not just despite their monstrosity but because of it and in the end do not assimilate to the society that rejected them but create their own accepting world. and maybe you’ll calm down.
remembered that my shepard/spacer shep has a still alive mom in the alliance according to ME2/3
also remembered that that character (katrine/caia) always has a sister uninvolved in the family's career military history
remembering she had to mourn her elder sister who just Disappeared for two years, and would have spent even longer knowing shepard isn't alive bc their alliance mom probably can't just tell a civillian doctor,
I don't believe in the devil so you probably can't sell your soul to him but I do believe that if you get famous enough that people start treating you like a two-dimensional character instead of a real human being you run the risk of getting trapped on the other side of the fourth wall and once that happens the narrative can Get You. which is basically the same as selling your soul for fame but who knows
Hey do you think Jamil has trouble seeing people his age as peers?
Like, growing up having to be a caretaker to a guy literally a few months older than him, always expected to act like the adult in the situation, expected to work with adults and adopt their perspectives and pick up their slack. Do you think he just, forgets sometimes?
I mean we've seen him go into caretaker mode with other sophomores, and the only people I've seen him take seriously are juniors like Vil who also act much older than they should have to (his reactions to Leona look more like a trauma response and I don't wanna get into it here). People like Malleus and Cater still somewhat get the caretaker treatment. Like I just highly doubt that he subconsciously realizes he's actually part of his age group
Aaand that inevitably brings up Azul, who also acts like he thinks he's older than he is. Whether you're looking at it from a shipping angle or not, he reacts to Azul like an actual peer. With older students, he seems more in his element but there's still a status hierarchy which he compulsively reacts to. With Azul he doesn't acknowledge any status worth respecting or see him as someone who needs to be looked after. He just bickers like an equal, in a way that implies he actually does see Azul as a real peer, like subconsciously he's categorized this guy into the same group as himself, who was previously alone on that level (he gets like this more with the twins too, over time, but it seems to start with Azul).
And my favorite part about this is, while that response stems from them both acting more like adults in general, they elicit a pettiness from each other which drags them both down to actually acting their own age, and I just love that. Their characters are perfect foils for each other and it seems to make them both less isolated in a way.
It’s easy to be good to people who are good to us.
It’s so natural that it’s expected. It’s just assumed that’s what we’ll do. To the point that we instinctively call out someone who isn’t good to people who are good to them.
“That’s how you thank him? After all he’s done for you?” “She couldn’t have been kinder to you and look what you did to her!”
It makes perfect sense. We should be good to people who are good to us. But there’s a subtle danger in all of this.
That – without really meaning to – we’ll drift into being good to people, only because they’re good to us. Only if we’re getting something out of it. That we’ll be good to people, but only because we want something from them.
That we’ll treat them like vending machines.
By the way, if you’re looking for a way to isolate yourself from people? And from God? This works. Extremely well.
It’s the point that Jesus is making in today’s Gospel. When He says, “If you knew what this meant, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned them.”
So what does it mean? Sacrifices are a classic feature of ancient religions – a transaction system. If you wanted your god to do something, you made a sacrifice.
The point Jesus is making is that’s not the relationship that God wants to have with them. As their insert-sacrifice-get-stuff vending machine.
You want to have a real relationship with God? Start with the right foundation for that relationship. Start with mercy.
But understand this – mercy is unearned. Mercy is not about merit. Or about who deserves it and who doesn’t. Mercy is a gift.
God doesn’t need anything. So if we’re going to give mercy, we’re going to have to give mercy to someone else.
Someone who hasn’t earned it. Someone who doesn’t deserve it.
Otherwise it isn’t mercy.
Here’s the odd thing about mercy. When we give mercy to someone else, we start to see ourselves in them. We see how much we take for granted.
What we think of as ours? What we think of as what we deserve? It’s really just God’s mercy poured out on us.
Understanding that we don’t deserve any of it?
It’s the only way to lose the vending machine mindset.
And the only sure foundation for a real relationship. With God or anyone else.
one thing I wish I saw in trans representation more was having hormone discorders/etc. i don't think I've ever even seen a trans masc with pcos in a show or anything! or a trans fem with hormone deficiency!!
I should have been clearer on Nettles. Yes she's is part of the dragonseed and has Valyrian blood but she doesn't look like Valyrian, which is part of why Rhaenyra hates her so much. It's not just because Daemon likes her cause Daemon liked Mysaria too but Nettles just looks like an ordinary black girl, something rare in Westeros and she acquires this ability to bond with a dragon.
There's been discourse on Twitter saying she's not necessary to the plot cause the Velaryons are black as well as the conversation about her being Daemon's daughter.
Oh, yes, absolutely, Rhaenyra's language in regards to Nettles holds racist (and classist) undertones - she straight up calls her a "low creature" and that "You need only look at her to know she has no drop of dragon’s blood in her", i.e. Valyrians can't have her skin colour.
Nettles' story presents an interesting opportunity for a storyteller, because not only is she a WOC, but, unlike the Velaryons, she is also poor and of the commonfolk. So there is intersectionality at play there in the conversation between good and evil and the difficult moral choices that come with acquiring so much power. HOTD is notorious for only focusing on the nobility, so this would be a perfect avenue to interrogate how the war is affecting regular people.
In addition, yes, I believe Nettles being a dragonseed herself was tantamount to her being able to access dragon riding as an ability, but just having the right blood is no guarantee the dragon will accept her, so her being resourceful and clever and using livestock to befriend Sheepstealer is also very important and relevant to her character. But, you know, it is also a decision to transcend and infringe upon the boundaries of humanity, of course with the naiveté and boldness and hope typical of youth, but nevertheless taking hold of that violent capacity for destruction. And I think that fans tend to gloss over that thematic thread for Nettles because they are so fond of her and, thus, are reluctant to view her as anything other than morally uncompromised.
So, in a way, beyond the implication that she might actually be Daemon's daughter who nonetheless gets a grooming narrative, I see Nettles' story as something like hope corrupted, a betterment narrative gone wrong perhaps, in the sense of thinking that this is an opportunity for you to prove your worth to the entire world, that you are more than this fragile flesh or the unlucky circumstances of your birth, making that one wrong decision out of desperation and not realising that you ended up trading your soul instead.
Which is why I think a talented writer could explore many compelling themes with Nettles' character if they were so inclined (hopefully they will be).
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE FUNNY MONSTER STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S TURNING 2 YEARS OLD TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love all of the progress I made on it, each year it becomes more monstrous and terrifying and sad and I love it
Here's the flipped version heheheha
This is actually a redraw that I'm definitely gonna continue whenever the birthday for the story hits. Here are the previous versions!!
I would just like to say thank you hit show Midnight Mass for the inspiration for the vampires and, overall, the story. I would definitely not be here if it wasn't for the show. Oh and thank you Count Orlok for the base of the vampires
Once again I feel I should reiterate that if you join the discord @baldurstaint and I run that you can request me for voice files. Unlike Coma, I take requests.
Only one person has taken me up on this so far. LITERALLY JUST ASK ME FOR STUFF.
Stop bothering Coma about Astarion and Gale voice files. We’ve split it up, and they are focused on the side characters. If you want specific companion or dead three voice lines ask me I swear I don’t bite unless you ask 😂
