Palm Springs (2020)
Tumblr media
You think the Groundhogs Day model has been fully explored with recent innovators like Happy Death Day but then Palm Springs comes along. This romantic comedy brings a whole new dimension to the concept of infinity. Clever and innovative, funny, romantic, heartfelt, even profound. It’s among the year’s best.
On November 9 in Palm Springs, Sarah (Cristin Milioti) is shocked when Nyles (Andy Samberg) - a complete stranger - gives a touching speech at her sister’s wedding. While everyone celebrates, they connect privately. The next morning, Sarah wakes up. It’s still November 9th. Nyles has been stuck in a time loop. Every morning, he wakes up and it’s November 9th and now, it's happening to Sarah too.
Initially, Palm Springs offers the jokes you’d expect. Nyles has lived this day an innumerable amount of time. He navigates the ceremony like a wizard, expertly predicting everyone’s dance moves and saying the best lines but beneath that exterior is profound boredom. Anything Sarah thinks of, he’s tried before. Now, his days are spent drinking and going through the motions. When he gets a playmate, the same day repeated over and over means infinite possibilities for schemes and pranks - the kind that would be the stuff of legends and it's hilarious.
Woven into the fun is a deep story about lasting love. Try repeating this day over and over: you wake up next to a girlfriend (Meredith Hagner) you know doesn’t love you anymore, getting ready for a wedding that - in your view - isn’t going anywhere. All alone. He’s reached peak cynicism. He so doesn’t care about anything he's not even looking for an escape. Why bother when dying just means starting over?
Everything changes once Sarah is brought into the loop. Nyles isn’t alone anymore. He’s still trapped but there’s a huge difference between eternity, and eternity with someone else. Palm Springs may be about a fictional scenario that could never happen to any of us but just wait a bit. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti have excellent chemistry. You want them to get together - they’ve literally got infinite time to figure out they’d be the perfect couple… but would they be? Isn't it a matter of time before they get sick of each other? Would they be together if they weren't the only people whose day didn't reset to zero? This is where real-life parallels can be drawn. When you’re in a marriage, you’re in it for the long run. Every morning will be "the same". You'll always wake up married to your spouse. How much of that relationship is maintained by love? How much by comfort of not having to look for someone? That’s a difficult question and the sci-fi premise allows Palm Springs to get to it efficiently, to condense and resolve it in a way no other scenario could.
Palm Springs may have its goofy moments but the jokes are stacked upon real-life questions everyone in a long-term relationship asks themselves. It's deceptively deep when it isn't gut-bustingly funny and whatever you do, don’t miss the mid-credit scene, which wraps it all up perfectly. (April 24, 2021)

I would like to find, or I would like a part to come to me that is like the part that Dennis Franz was fortunate to be able to play on 'NYPD Blue,' a sort of similar-looking actor to me, a generic, bald white guy who you would often think of as playing the authority figure. But he was the disgruntled middle-man. That would be a fun character. —J. K. Simmons

'Invincible' Season 3 In Production
Tumblr media
It's happening! Voice recordings are officially underway for Invincible Season 3. Invincible Season 1 premiered on Amazon Prime on March 25, 2021. The show stars the voice talents of Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Seth Rogan, Khary Payton, Mark Hamill, Sandra Oh, and Walton Goggins with Robert Kirkman serving as showrunner. The first season was a bona fide success with critics and fans alike. Invincible currently has a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. In a recent interview with The Movie Dweeb, Khary Payton who plays Black Samson on the show, confirmed they have already started voice recordings for Invincible Season 3. He also confirms Season 2 is complete. This is the first update in a long while and this should be thrilling news for fans. If Season 2 is done and 3 is being worked on, then their release dates might come sooner than we thought. There is currently no release date set for either upcoming season of Invincible. I feel we're sure to hear something substantial in the coming months. You can see Khary Payton's full quote below: 'We finished season 2. We're onto season 3, but its so hard to say right now ." This is terrific news no matter how you slice it. Season 1 of Invincible was incredible and I can't wait to see what they have in store for the next two seasons. I literally binge-watched the entirety of Season 1 in about two days and I plan on doing the same with the next two. It'll be interesting to see where the show goes following the events of the finale. Where did Omni-Man go? What happens when he returns? Can Mark stop his father? All these pertinent questions will probably get answers in the next two seasons and I'm totally on board with it. If you haven't checked it out yet, you can watch Invincible Season 1 on Amazon Prime now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWrh0q6rLxU&list=PLsD5qP1WqKt5hI6fiJSw6Z_MTsdsoNkoB Series Synopsis: An adult animated series based on the Skybound/Image comic about a teenager whose father is the most powerful superhero on the planet. The Bachelors (2017)
Format: Live-action movie.
Director: Kurt Voelker
Writer: Kurt Voelker
Is J.K. Simmons in this? Yes, he has the lead role.
Who does he portray? Bill Palet, a widower and father of a teenaged son.
What does he do? Teach math, mourn his wife, raise his kid.
How bald is he? On the head, quite. He seems to keep his head-hair trimmed to a crown around the edges and let his face-hair just run wild. I’m not opposed to that sort of thing if the person doing it can pull it off, and it seems that he can.
Is anybody else in this? It does appear that various other people are in this. J.K. Simmons is a good actor, but I don’t think he can pull off playing his own teenaged son.
Is it worth seeing if I’m not a J.K. Simmons completist? If highschool teen drama and dudes grieving the loss of a loved one is your thing, definitely*. Otherwise, not really. It does some things I like and some other things I don’t like, and at the end of the day I don’t think it really earns its ending (which IMO is really the key to pulling off a story like this). If the themes I’ve mentioned pique your interest I’d recommend checking out Rabbit Hole or The Meddler for movies that I would argue handle them much better.
*For the record, I don’t intend for this to sound as judgmental as it probably does. I have plenty of preferences that other people probably couldn’t account for, so I’m not about to call anybody else out for liking this kind of thing.

The Tomorrow War (2021)
Tumblr media
The Tomorrow War regrettably spends its interesting premise revisiting tried-and-true sci-fi action elements. With its dynamic action scenes, frightening monsters, and strong performances, all this movie needed was a strong third act.
In 2022, we receive a desperate call for help from the future. A war against alien invaders called the "Whitespikes" is going bad. The people of 2051 ask that any able-bodied adults help by traveling to them via wormhole. Biology teacher and former Green Beret Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) is drafted, knowing fully well that fewer than 30% of those who face the Whitespikes return.
I love this setup. The soldiers from 2051 know who they can "safely" draft without disrupting the timeline and this wormhole - the only one they have the resources to maintain - is just the push they need to win. Dan - and his fellow recruits - are fighting for their children’s world because their future is non-existent but there's not enough time to properly train most of them. We have ordinary people thrown into an Aliens/Starship Troopers-like military conflict. The enemies are hideous creatures so efficient at killing you can empty an entire clip in their direction and barely make it out alive. There’s the immediate terror of being shredded to pieces, and the emotional weight of being forcibly drafted into a war you can’t say no to, all to save a generation that's just learning to walk.
The Tomorrow War could've been great but just isn't. Firstly, because the time travel idea isn’t utilized much, except for an obvious reveal about Dan’s daughter. No one seems to grasp the power humanity has unleashed when they can send themselves messages to the past. If they can capture even a single Whitespike and send it to 2021, they would have thirty years to figure out how to kill one efficiently. Millions of weapons could be built and stored for future soldiers to grab. Countries could be evacuated before the Whitespikes show up. You could send the data necessary to create wormholes to 2021 so they could set up more, etc. Secondly, it fails to address that they are changing the past and that - to a certain extent - the lives sacrificed don’t matter if history can be changed. The film really should’ve had another Earth from a parallel universe call for help, not a different timeline. This would’ve fixed many of the film’s issues.
The picture is exciting thanks to the desperate stand against the impossible odds, the inherent drama of the situation, and the frightening opponents. As a movie you watch at home "for free", it’s a good way to pass the time, though less so at the end. This movie is too long and doesn’t know what to do during its final act except take direct cues from Aliens, and The Thing. It’s particularly disappointing because the Tomorrow War plays no part in the final conflict.
The Tomorrow War needed to be smarter. Then, it might’ve been in the same league as Edge of Tomorrow - another film it resembles - instead, it’s a passable time-waster you probably won’t remember down the line. (July 7, 2021)

So I saw Whiplash (the film)
I may have liked it even more than Birdman. Need to get into some jazz.
What struck me though, is the competitive environment in the studio band and Fletcher (Simmons) are probably an allegory for capitalism. It can result in some great things, but far too often, the cost is unacceptable and inhuman.
And it turns us all into dicks.

Spider-Man : Far From Home *Spoiler*
1) Loved watching Peter and MJ together, they’re such cute dorks that I can’t get enough of. Kind of heartbreaking when Peter first thought MJ starts to notice or like him only because he’s Spider-Man. But her confession of what she really feels about him later and about how she’s not good with people or afraid of getting too attached to someone is just heartwarming.  2) Mysterio is such a good villain that I feel like leaving my seat and jumped into the screen to strangle and beat the shit out of him for the things he said to Peter after he reveals his true self. I mean, at least other villains know they’re assholes but this guy, pretends to be a good or nice guy, just so he could get someone’s defenses down. That really pisses me off.  3) I knew something seems off about Fury, his mannerism, the way he talks and reacts to things. For one, Nick would know how to reach out to Peter in secrecy without having to show up in Peter’s room being constantly intruded by his classmates. And Nick is smart enough not to be deceived by tricks easily, I mean Fury knew Hydra infiltrated SHIELD without any illusions involved.  4) Peter got over the loss of his uncle, got over the break up with Liz, got over the fact that Liz’s father is a villain who tried to kill him, got snapped to dust and brought back to life only to lost his father figure, Tony.  Now he’s trying to make sense of everything while trying to have a normal life like everyone else. So him ghosting Fury is pretty much understandable. The kid needs a break! 5) So...that ending with Jonah Jameson. WHAT! It’s really J.K.Simmons! I’m disappointed he didn’t say ”Spider-Man is a menace!” I guess he finally have photos of Spider-Man huh? Not just Spider-Man but the man behind that mask itself. But wonder what’s going to happen next? Would be cool if we can see Shuri, Morgan Stark and that kid from Iron Man 3 who was at the funeral.
