Oh, look, another blonde hair, blue eyed doll from AG. I watched the cute little stop-motion short film AG made for Courtney, and I have to admit, it was fucking cute and her charm won me over.

There’s *some* actual historical engagement with the popularization of video games. The biggest thing is that her mom is running for mayor of their fictional town in California (because of course Courtney has to be a Valley Girl) and faces a bunch of sexist BS on a TV interview. It covers the space shuttle era of space travel, Challenger disaster and the emotional impact that had on the United States.

In her second book, Courtney has a classmate with AIDS. I’m glad that was included, because putting AIDS and HIV-positive kids in schools was a huge fight in the 80s. Here in Tampa, the mother of Eliana Martinez, a disabled girl who had contracted HIV in a blood transfusion at birth, went to court to get her daughter into school, and a federal judge ruled she could go to school as long as she spent the day in a glass cage like an animal. It was that bad. Eventually, Eliana was able to attend school without the cage because her mother, Rosa, was amazing.

In spite of everything I like about Courtney’s story, let’s be real. AG’s 80s doll should have been Latina. A Cuban-American girl living in Miami, with at least one parent who’s an Operacíon Pedro Pan adoptee, and with relatives who came over during the Mariel Boatlift. And I’m not just saying that because my parents were living in Miami in the 80s, I’m saying it because Miami was an incredible place in the 80s.

Operacíon Pedro Pan was a program by the U.S. State Department and Catholic Church for Cuban children to be sent to America when parents feared they would lose their parental rights and their children would be sent to communist indoctrination camps. It was a chance for their kids to be raised as Catholic in free America instead of atheists under the brutal Castro regime. About 14,000 children were removed from Cuba to be mostly re-settled in Miami.

You may be familiar with the Mariel Boatlift if you’ve seen the opening scene of Scarface, which actually sums up the situation pretty well.

Now, granted, Mariel only happened between April and October of 1980. Even after the boatlift officially ended, people seeking to flee Cuba continued to come on boats. The “wet foot, dry foot” policy meant that anyone fleeing Cuba who managed to set foot on American soil was guaranteed asylum. However, they had to face the US coastguard trying to intercept them and turn them back on the water. Refugees from Haiti fleeing the Duvalier regime also flocked to Miami, but since Duvalier was right-wing, Haitians weren’t granted the same protections as Cubans were and it was absolute bullshit.

On top of all that, Miami also had thriving African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Colombian, Jewish, and gay communities. There was just SO MUCH incredible stuff going on in Miami in the 80s, and I mean, hello, Miami Vice was a whole aesthetic!

You could include all the stuff that’s going in in Courtney’s books and STILL pack in so much more amazing history. The overall vibe I get with Coutney’s collection is that even though there’s some good stuff in her stories, it’s more about selling 80s nostalgia than actually teaching 80s history, which is a travesty. I know it’d be hard to engage with 80s politics and Ronald Reagan without pissing off a *lot* of people, but you can still engage with some serious 80s history if you just look outside of the blonde hair, blue eye box.

Gallerist Helly Nahmad Arrested For Suspected Gambling Related Money Laundering

The well known international art dealer Helly Nahmad’s New York gallery was raided by the FBI on Tuesday morning for suspected illegal gambling and money laundering breaches . The gallery located at the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Ave was thoroughly searched and computers were removed by the federal agency. Forbes stated that it was part of a “sweep of illegal gambling rings operated by Russian organised crime.” The New York Times have also reported “Helly Nahmad has been indicted for his role operating and financing high-stakes poker games involving Wall Street financiers, Hollywood celebrities and professional athletes.”

The actions taken on 16 April were part of a wider probe into Russian organised crime in the United States. Nahmad has been named for his involvement with a Bronx plumbing company used to launder profits from suspected gambling. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York issued statements alleging that one enterprise in this scheme laundered tens of millions of dollars through Cyprus companies and bank accounts. In NY, a 32-year-old JPMorgan Chase branch manager is alleged to have been involved in transactions in order to avoid bank reporting requirements. The Cyprus’ banking system has been under scrutiny as a haven for Russian organised crime for years. Last month a $13 billion bailout of its economy by the EU and IMF devalued the currency by 40%.

It is thought that the funds were placed into real estate and hedge fund investment. Mr. Nahmad, according to the indictment, also wired money $500,000 and $850,000 from his father’s bank account in Switzerland to a bank account in America to help fund the gambling operation. The government is seeking the forfeiture of four high-end properties, including an apartment at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue and two Miami estates, in connection with the case. In a separate case, Mr. Nahmad has been accused of defrauding a client by overpricing a $50k painting by selling it for an overvalued $300,000.

The roots of the Nahmad family are in Aleppo, Syria, where Sephardic Jewish banker Hillel Nahmad lived until just after the second world war. Following anti-Jewish violence in 1947, he moved to Beirut, Lebanon and when the situation there became difficult, he took his three sons, Joseph (Giuseppe), Ezra and David, to Milan in the early 1960s. As teenagers in the 1960s, they began to deal in art. Ezra and David skipped school to trade on the Italian stock market. At a Juan Gris exhibition in Rome organised by cubist dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Ezra and David bought two works – the only pieces sold. Kahnweiler befriended them, selling them works by Picasso, Braque, Gris. With the emergence of the Red Brigades terror group in the 1970s, Milan was perceived as too dangerous, and the family moved again. Joseph and Ezra headed for Monaco, and David to New York. New York’s Helly Nahmad Gallery, on Madison Avenue, is a separate company run by David’s son, who took over his father’s earlier Davlyn Gallery. David Nahmad was the 1996 Backgammon World Champion, and is known for betting large amounts of money on the game. This latest case is part of a Stateside probe into organised crime.

Miami Beach firefighters returned from Israel

Eight Miami Beach firefighters have returned home to South Florida after two weeks of helping their counterparts in Israels.

On Sunday, firefighters attended the ceremony along with family, supporters and members of the Miami Beach government where they were awarded certificates of merit. Captain Adonis Garcia stated:

Hearing the bombs and explosions going off the first night we got there, going into the bunker, was very different for me.

Miami Beach firefighters were split up upon arrival in Israel. They were sent to Haifa, Ayalon, Sharon, and Jerusalem.

The firefighters were paid a salary and benefits covered by the City of Miami Beach, Temple Beth Sholom, and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation during their time overseas.

Oh, you should have read the Tweets on Twitter’s cyber bulletin board! The Chuds were as histrionic as a high school drama major. One Tweet read, “We will avenge the deep state in indicting our patriotic leader President Donald J Trump! Blood will be flowing in the streets of Miami! Signed American Warrior!” Well, the only thing flowing was sewage from a busted pipe in the street gutters of Miami—which is a normal occurrence in that city.

The only glamour that’s ever come out of Miami was in the 1980’s TV crime drama, “Miami Vice,” with its pastel colored clothes and buildings, fast sports cars, and 80’s music on the soundtrack. Florida has become the premier state of reactionary politics, alligators high on meth, and White Trash criminals robbing convenience stores. If you like tornadoes, tidal waves, or unbearable humidity in the summer, Florida is your state! There’s lot of racism against Afro-Americans and Latin migrant workers. Jewish retirees are subjects of Anti-Semitic jokes. That is, unless you’re a WASP or an exile of Communist CUBA. White Catholics are treated as second class Aryans unless they’re Conservatively correct. No wonder the state is shaped like a penis. Does that mean America is no longer identified by the pronouns she/her? America is a Trans-nation?? Florida’s governor, an Italian American named Ron DeSantis, thinks he is going to beat Trump for the presidency in 2024. He cannot stop using the word, “Woke” anytime he’s on camera, in public. Does he have a solution to Florida’s infrastructure problems or natural disasters? No! But he swears he is going to stop the woke agenda! Whatever the fuck THAT is! He’s already promised that, if Trump is convicted, he will pardon him. Yes! That is the way to get Trump votes!

Well, leading up to yesterday, there were promises made to the public, over cable TV and social media, that fifty thousand, enraged Trump supporters, armed with pitchforks and torches, would show up in Miami and tear down the federal court building! A contingency of Proud Boys had committed to come and beat up Left wing, counter-protesters. Militia groups were going to march, AR 15s at their side, ready to use them if provoked. They were to begin a second civil war in America!

So, what happened? All in all, about 250 Trump supporters showed up. It amounted to what looked like a Trump campaign rally in Montana. “Blacks for Trump” showed up, all 9 of them, though it was more like a low turnout for a tailgate party for the Miami Heat in the parking lot of Kaseya Center. The Heat just lost the NBA championship, by the way. I’m sure Miami is proud of their team.

The only action reported was that of a Baby Boomer “Woke” protester. He was wearing a 19th Century era, black and white striped prison uniform, and holding a sign that read, “Lock Him UP.” At one point, he ran in front of the motorcade to try and stop it, but Secret Service agents immediately pushed him aside and onto the ground. Miami police took him away in handcuffs.

In the end, Trump entered a plea of “Not guilty,” and then he and his team went on their merry way to a campaign rally at his New Jersey golf club.

The next time I go to traffic court, I want my own motorcade paid for by the taxpayers.

Nazi Torture Tactics being used in the Campaign of Terrorism directed at me for 5 years and 9 months including GASSING. This is usually carried out by someone walking past me with a backpack and I would notice it about 45 seconds later. Sometimes something is hidden in a nearby garbage can or a potted plant and there is a small narrow stream of gas coming out of it. There were times that it made me very tired for 3-4 hours and other times made me feel very sick.

They have also used SLEEP DEPRIVATION many times including last night, NOISE TORTURE, bombarding a person with spoken dialogue to hog their attention over an extended period of time usually delivered thru hidden speakers nearby or in a/c vent in car including while they are driving which is very distracting and dangerous to that driver and others on the road near him. In addition, they will use PSYCHOLOGICAL TORTURE usually with a musical background and at a low volume and at some point pick up the pace to try to incite anxiety, infuriate.

Auschwitz Liberation Day

Auschwitz Liberation Day, observed on January 27, is a day that sums up the history of the Holocaust — to commemorate the Jews that were killed and abused. A genocide of these victims by Nazi Germany occurred between 1941 and 1945. So much history, so many stories, and propaganda came about from these critical years. It’s been more than half a century and we are urged not to forget. This day reminds every one of us that nothing good came about from the Holocaust, a true event in history, that only condemned and killed six million Jews.

History of Auschwitz Liberation Day

Auschwitz, also called Auschwitz-Birkenau, was the Nazis’ biggest and most known concentration and extermination camp. Auschwitz was known to be the “final solution” because of its devastating ways of abuse and murder, especially of Jews. Located in the southern part of Poland, known as Oswiecim, the largest Nazi camp consisted of three parts: a prison camp, a slave-labor camp, and an extermination camp. These camps involved gas chambers and cremation furnaces. Auschwitz’s doctors would perform medical experiments and inhumane procedures on some prisoners, using injections, radiation, and sterilization.

Germans decided to forgo the camp by the start of 1945. On January 17, 1945, 67,000 prisoners were prompted to attend a “death march.” Prisoners who were too weak to walk were killed on the spot. While this happened, the Germans were trying to remove and erase any semblance of the camp and the crimes they’ve committed. On January 27 of the same year, Soviet soldiers of the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front entered Auschwitz, and thus a mere 7,000 prisoners were finally free of the wretchedness and affliction of the camp.

Upon investigation after this discovery, the Soviet Commission investigated all of the Holocaust’s history, especially Nazi acts, and crimes done in the campground. Today, it is known that 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz, mainly consisting of Jews. Aside from the anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation, January 27 is also appointed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

An emergency delegation from the IDF's Homefront Command will be sent to Miami to help the rescue effort from the Champlain Towers building in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on Saturday night.

In coordination with the governor's office in Florida and the Foreign Ministry, Gantz decided to send a team of engineering and rescue specialists.

"We will make every effort to help save human lives, and to offer our support to the Jewish community and to our American friends," Gantz said.

Diaspora Minister Nachman Shai landed in Florida Sunday. During his trip, he will meet with local Jewish community leaders and Miami-Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Upon his return to Israel, Shai will present Prime Minister Naftali Bennett plans for assistance to the Jewish community. Ahead of his trip, Shai said that he intends to explore various ways of assisting the Jewish community in Miami.

"We will do whatever we can to help the Americans in any way they deem fit," Shai told The Jerusalem Post en route to Miami. "America can learn from Israeli experience. Unfortunately, we have too much experience with disasters."

Shai said his visit would send a powerful message about the relationship between Israel and American Jewry being a two-way street. He said this was very important to the prime minister.

Israel will send aid to Miami, Bennett promised on Friday afternoon. In a tweet Bennett wrote that "we are following with concern the difficult images that are coming out from Florida. Our Foreign Ministry representatives in Miami and Israel are doing everything possible to assist and address the situation.

"The entire nation of Israel prays for the safety of those injured and missing in the disaster," Bennett wrote. "From here we send support to our brethren in the Jewish community in particular, and to all Florida residents in general, and express our sorrow during this tragic event." On Saturday night, the prime minister spoke to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Expressing condolences on behalf of the Israeli public, Bennett reaffirmed his pledge to provide aid. "The US is our greatest ally and we all stand by your side in this difficult time," Bennett told DeSantis. "We all pray for the safety of those injured. I have instructed all sectors of the Israeli government to assist in any way necessary." Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said that at such difficult times, Israel must stand with its friends in America and the Jewish people in Florida in particular. He said it was a badge of pride that Israel could be effective in providing assistance. On Sunday, President-elect Isaac Herzog sent a missive to the President of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, expressing his condolences and offering support to the local Jewish community. "The Jewish Agency has always worked to ensure the safety and security of our Jewish sisters and brothers whenever and wherever they may be. As you begin to assess needs, I would like to offer our assistance in the days and weeks to come. Our global presence and infrastructure allow us to swiftly respond to a tragedy like this."

United Hatzalah in cooperation with El Al will also be sending a team from its Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit to assist victims of the condo collapse in Surfside, Florida. The team will work to provide psychological support and emotional stabilization to those affected by the collapse, including families and neighbors of those who were injured, killed, missing or in any other way involved in the tragedy. United Hatzalah volunteers will also make themselves available to the wider community. “As soon as the collapse occurred, we began making preparations for the mission to depart," said President and Founder of United Hatzalah Eli Beer. "When we contacted El Al about the possibility of having this mission, they were eager to help and decided to fully sponsor the flights for the team." The mission will be led by Vice President of Operations for United Hatzalah Dov Maisal, who has led disaster response missions to Nepal, Haiti and Japan as a paramedic. He will partner directly with Clinical Operations Director of the PCRU Einat Kaufman, who is a cognitive psychologist and a trained EMT. Most recently, the same team provided support to those affected by the Meron tragedy, those injured, mourning and to the first responders themselves. "This will be the fourth emergency relief mission conducted by our Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit in the United States in as many years," Beer added. "El AL is an incredible partner and we are forever grateful for their support of this mission which is to help the community in Surfside that is suffering terribly right now."

"I myself was the benefactor of the kindness of the entire South Florida community during my fight with COVID-19 last year and if I were able to go myself on this mission I would," Beer added. "I am sending my best people on this mission in order to provide as much help as we can. We stand with you and we are sending you the best of the best to help. They will be there as soon as regulations permit us to arrive.”

Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued a statement saying they were devastated by the disaster and grateful for the ongoing leadership and support shown by the local and broader Jewish community for those impacted by the tragedy.

"As we continue to monitor this developing situation, the American Jewish community prays for the recovery of the victims, and extends condolences to those who lost loved ones," they said.

The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is a well-known 'hot spot' for South Florida bargain hunters seeking out the latest flea market deals and moviegoers heading to watch the latest drive-in flics with their families. It once featured free concerts of famous bands and a circus with elephants, clowns and acrobats. It was where Jeb Bush announced his run for Governor, well over two decades ago. Now, once every two weeks, the famed Swap Shop features extreme Muslims seeking to convert the vulnerable to radical Islam, and they are doing it in the name of Jesus, literally. The dangerous nature of this offensive endeavor must be exposed and condemned.

WhyIslam is the dawah (religious outreach) division of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), the US arm of South Asian Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). As such, WhyIslam and ICNA have sizable links with overseas terror. Appearing on a 2008 video promoting WhyIslam was Mazen Mokhtar, a former admin for the now-defunct al-Qaeda recruitment site, qoqaz.net, and a champion of Hamas and suicide bombings. Since September 1989, ICNA has been associated with Ashrafuz Zaman Khan, a former JI death squad leader who was sentenced to death, in absentia, for multiple murders, and who has held a number of top ICNA positions.

Up until recently, WhyIslam featured a message board on its website. A number of the forum moderators used it to post messages in favor of Hamas, Hezbollah, the vilification of Jews, and the destruction of Israel. One, BrJimC, wrote, "I don't think Hamas has a reason to not want to destroy Israel…" and "Those Jews that speak out against such atrocity by holding their public officials accountable are the ones who deserve peace and life… The rest will one day wind up in the Mediterranean Sea." Another moderator, MARWAN, wrote, "I support Hezbollah as long as they stand by justice" and "Nazi restaurant… I wonder if they have kosher meals."

This past December, the South Florida Muslim Federation (SoFlo Muslims), an umbrella group for South Florida's many radical Muslim entities, along with WhyIslam opened up a booth at the Swap Shop targeting members of the Christian community. It included a canopy hovering over a table, on top of which were free copies of the Quran to be given away. Attached to one side of the canopy was a huge WhyIslam banner that read, "I [heart] JESUS." The sign was meant to disarm Christians and make them believe they were in friendly territory. While the group may purport to have an affinity for Jesus, regarding them as friends would be a grave error.

Accompanying WhyIslam was Texas-based imam, Ibrahim Dremali, who had previously been a fixture in the South Florida Muslim community and later would be added to the federal 'no fly' list. In 2000, Dremali partook in an event in Miami, where Israeli flags were burned and event goers shouted for "Zionist blood." In 2001, when his Boca mosque was criticized for publishing a violent essay on its website labeling Jews "enemies" and stating that Muslims will "fight the Jews and kill them," Dremali lied and said it was the result of "hackers." And in 2002, he was a character witness at a hearing for soon-to-be-convicted al-Qaeda operative Adham Hassoun.

Dremali has also been involved with ICNA, in the past. From March 2000 to September 2001, Dremali was listed as one of eight local contacts for ICNA-SE, ICNA's southeast regional division, on the same web page as links to the official sites of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban. The page also solicited funds for al-Qaeda's qoqaz.net (mentioned previously). The webmaster for the ICNA-SE site was Syed Khawer Ahmad, a co-founder of Dremali's Boca mosque and who was, at the time, a website designer for Hamas in Gaza.

The Muslim Federation, which has as one of its members a mosque, Masjid Jamaat Al Mumineen (MJAM), that propagates material on its website which repeatedly curses Jews and Christians, has branded its Swap Shop project participants, the 'SoFlo-WhyIslam Dawah Team.' It claims the booth will run once every two weeks, and according to the Federation, the team is "growing."

The Federation has posted photos on its website and social media of the Dawah Team in action. One photo taken from the team's booth depicts a serious-looking Dremali wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh-patterned COVID mask, hunched over, while 'in the face' of a disabled man in a mobility scooter. Another photo, taken in January, included a second WhyIslam banner, which stated, "ISLAM: The way of life [of] Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mohammad."

For years, ICNA has been spreading a similar message via buses and billboards. However the message is offensive to many within the Jewish and Christian faiths as well as misleading, because it implies that the most revered figures in Judaism and Christianity were practicing Muslims and are solely part of Islam. This, even though the religion of Islam came into existence long after the others. In 2009, when the Islamist group CAIR paid for the identical message to be placed on Broward County, Florida buses – something that this author led a demonstration against – even the liberal Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel said the message was incendiary.

Now, twelve years later, ICNA and the South Florida Muslim Federation are, once again, co-opting Jewish and Christian icons of the past, while getting into the faces of non-Muslims, to push the same pseudo-theological drivel, what amounts to nothing more than a repulsive lie. But then, what can you expect from Islamist organizations that associate with and promote bigotry and terror? Shame on those who ignore the threat coming from these dangerous groups practicing religious theft and cultural appropriation, and shame on the Swap Shop for allowing such abuse to be placed upon its vulnerable patrons!

In New York, where there was an 82% rise in antisemitism in the first three months of 2019, some residents are saying hate crimes are “the new norm.” This week [of August 1, 2019], two incidents in Florida – a shooting attack in front of the Young Israel of Greater Miami, and a package containing threats and antisemitic writings sent to Young Israel in Bal Harbour – led an area rabbi to say, “We no longer feel comfortable in our own shul.”

Nine months ago, 11 people were killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre, and in April a congregant was murdered and a rabbi lost two fingers when a white supremacist shot up a synagogue in Poway, California. American Jews are asking: Is it safe to pray at my synagogue?

...For...Jews across the US, there is a widespread belief that antisemitism today is coming from both streams: the Left with its anti-Israel rhetoric, and the Right with its white supremacist and extremist attitudes.

Jacob Solomon, president and CEO of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, said everyone is concerned about antisemitism.

“With the attacks on Pittsburgh and Poway, all of a sudden there is a real, live possibility of an antisemitic attack,” he said.

...Solomon added that there needs to be a balance to make sure that there is enough security for congregations to be safe, but also for there to be a warm and welcoming environment. He encouraged Jews to continue going to shul and to events at Jewish community centers and the like, but to always remain vigilant and to be prepared. “Be trained,” Solomon stressed. “Situational awareness is always critical. Always think about how you would react in these situations. Don’t stay away from synagogues and Jewish community centers, because then that’s a victory for the bad guys.”

He also stressed that Jews must remain united in the face of antisemitism, and that “we cannot allow the toxic nature of political discourse to be divisive. Once the Left or the Right weaponize the Jews, that gives the antisemites the victory.” Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt told the Post that “it’s understandable that American Jews feel concerned about the rise of antisemitic incidents, especially after the Pittsburgh and Poway shootings in the past year. In 2018, antisemitic incidents were about twice as high as they were in 2015. From college campuses to the political arena to the public square, we have seen a steep increase that is unnerving.” He said that despite this, American Jewry has continued to thrive for the past 50-plus years. “I believe this is a reflection of the fact that America is a remarkably inclusive and pluralistic country that truly has embraced our community,” he said. “There is considerable evidence that supports this observation.”

...He made it clear, however, that any antisemitism in the country is too much antisemitism.

“Jews should be able to observe our traditions without fear of harassment or violence... This is an all hands on deck effort from elected officials to community leaders to ordinary citizens. All of us have a role to play to push back on prejudice and ensure that there is justice and fair treatment to all.”

...[American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris] said that the 2019 AJC Survey of American Jews found that 65% think that the status of Jews in the US is less secure than a year ago.\

...“The best answer to antisemitism is to continue to live our Jewish lives proudly, openly and without fear,” he concluded.

Epstein’s death focuses attention on longtime friend who allegedly recruited girls for him.

Ghislaine Maxwell was, according to her accusers, Jeffrey Epstein’s protector and procurer, his girlfriend and his madam. She was, by all accounts, a soul mate and a mirror image. He grew up in Brooklyn with no money to speak of and never finished college. She is Paris-born, Oxford-educated, a jet-setter who partied with princes and billionaires.

Together, Epstein and Maxwell allegedly built what prosecutors, police and a growing number of women described as a sex-trafficking operation that crisscrossed the nation to provide Epstein with three young girls a day.

The death of Epstein, the convicted sex offender who authorities said hanged himself in a federal detention center cell in New York on Saturday, leaves those who seek to hold someone responsible for the alleged abuse of dozens of girls with one prime target: Maxwell. (...)

Maxwell, 57, has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing. According to people familiar with the investigation, authorities have had trouble locating Maxwell, who is believed to be living abroad. Her five-story Manhattan townhouse was sold in 2016 for $15 million by a company that used the address of Epstein’s New York office.

Her lawyers told a judge in 2017 that she was in London, but had no fixed address. Lawyers representing Epstein’s alleged victims said they wouldn’t expect Maxwell to return to the United States anytime soon for fear of being arrested. (...)

For someone who stood by Epstein through the most sordid allegations, Maxwell was also a factor in his downfall: It was through a 2015 defamation lawsuit filed against Maxwell by one of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, that thousands of pages of documents containing detailed accounts of Epstein’s alleged abuses became public last week.

But Maxwell herself had long since slipped away. Although associates of Epstein said Maxwell never completely broke off relations with Epstein, she became far less of a presence at his various properties in recent years. (...)

In an interview with the Miami Herald last year, Giuffre said, “The training started immediately. It was everything down to . . . how to be quiet, be subservient, give Jeffrey what he wants. A lot of this training came from Ghislaine herself, and being a woman, it kind of surprises you that a woman could actually let stuff like that happen. But not only let it happen but to groom you into doing it.” (...)

Yet another woman has claimed that Maxwell not only recruited girls for Epstein, but took part in the sexual abuse of girls. Maria Farmer said in an affidavit earlier this year that she met Maxwell and Epstein at an art show when she was a graduate student in Manhattan in 1995. The next summer, Farmer said, both Maxwell and Epstein sexually assaulted her at the Ohio estate of Leslie Wexner, the billionaire founder of The Limited stores and Epstein’s only publicly known financial client. Farmer also said that Maxwell took part in the sexual abuse of her 15-year-old sister on a massage table at Epstein’s Zorro Ranch in New México. (...)

Maxwell grew up in a 53-room mansion on 14 acres near Oxford. Her father was Robert Maxwell, a British member of Parliament and book and newspaper publisher who was regularly on the front pages until he died mysteriously in 1991 aboard the Lady Ghislaine, a yacht he had named for his youngest daughter. The official ruling was that his death was an accident, but some British press coverage speculated that Maxwell, under pressure because of his enormous debts, killed himself. Ghislaine never believed that and subscribed to the notion that her father was murdered.

In life, the father — born Jan Hoch, a Czech Jewish refugee before he transformed himself into a London publisher — carried himself like a man of extreme wealth. When he died, he was found to owe money to more than 40 banks, to the tune of more than $4 billion. (...)
