Jacopo Amigoni (Italian, 1682-1752)
The Holy Face, first half of the 18th century
Museo del Prado, Madrid
During Christ’s ascent to Calvary, a woman known as la hemorroísa (literally, the menstruating woman), offered him a white cloth, which absorbed the image of his bloodstained face. This miraculous image and the woman involved came to be known as The Veronica. Here, Amigoni, an outstanding Venetian rococo painter who arrived in Spain in 1748, presents the sacred cloth alongside various putti whose inconsolable sobbing contrasts with the Jesus’ serene expression.
