World Cocktail Day
Host or attend a cocktail party and try out some new flavors, or perfect your hand at mixing any number of drinks, from a White Russian to a classic Cosmo.
“No party is complete without cocktails! My friends all have different tastes when it comes to their drink of choice, so I like to maintain a well-stocked bar with different kinds of alcohol to keep everyone happy.” ~Khloe Kardashian
One of the best ways people get together and bond over life is through drinking. For a fun night out, cocktails provide a wide arrangement of scents and flavors to keep everything exciting and have a long history of becoming a steady staple in people’s lives. So, let us dive right in and see what World Cocktail Day is all about.
History of World Cocktail Day
In 1806, The Balance and Columbian Repository coined the term “cocktail” as a stimulating liquor with a wide variety of sweets, waters, and bitters. Originally, the Oxford English Dictionary defined the term with a different set of connotations, describing it as a horse with a tail like a cock’s, with its tail cocked up instead of hung down.
Cocktails as a drink, however, started as a British invention in the 19th century and has since become an American innovation when a Connecticut-born bartender Jerry Thomas wrote the book “The Bartender’s Guide.” The Bartender’s Guide basically broadcasted an encyclopedia of how to mix drinks and recipes on some of the best combinations of drinks and flavors.
During the 1920s American prohibition, many cocktails were mixed into existence that remain firm favorites today. With not much high-quality alcohol available, cocktails were the perfect way to make that smuggled rum, gin or whiskey just a little bit more drinkable. Enter the cocktail; rum mojitos, the Sidecar, and the Tom Collins all flourished at a time when recreational alcohol wasn’t legal.
The ‘Bee’s Knees’ cocktail was actually created to mask and sweeten the taste of illegally brewed bathtub gin. The roaring twenties took the cocktail and shook it up into some of our most popular modern-day cocktails. Drinking didn’t stop during the prohibition, people simply went underground. Many illegal speakeasies popped up, serving cocktails in jazz-style locales.
Post-prohibition saw the invention of drinks that still grace the pages of your favorite cocktail bar menus. 1954 saw the mixing of the Pina Colada in Puerto Rico when Ramon Marrero created the delicious pineapple treat at the Caribe Hilton hotel. 1988 saw the much-loved Cosmopolitan enter our lives, thanks to Toby Cecchini and his desire to share a drink with his fellow bartenders in San Francisco.
A constant throughout the cocktail era in America was the Rainbow Room. Opened after the prohibition in 1934, the Rainbow Room was a high-end club where New York A-listers could celebrate in style with post-prohibition cocktails. The Rainbow Room was revived and renovated in different forms over the years, being closed during WWII and for various restorations.
The 1987 reopening saw emerging mixologist Dale DeGroff create a pre-prohibition list of cocktails that revived some firm favorites and spearheaded the modern cocktail mixing revolution that made the cocktail bar increasingly popular.
The holiday itself is held annually by Drinkaware, a United Kingdom-based charity that brings awareness to the effects of drinking and aims to reduce the harm that drinking can have on people and families. The website provides facts and information about drinking, alcohol poisoning, and alcohol abuse. The World Cocktail Day page that Drinkaware hosts have events all over the world that you can partake in, a blog you can follow about your favorite recipes, and how you can drink safely while also having fun.
How to Celebrate World Cocktail Day
If you’re up for a night of fun drinking, then host a party at your place and mix up some of your favorite drinks for your friends. If you want to spice things up, check out a new recipe on some of your favorite blogs or newsletters, and make your kitchen or bar into an experiment place for you and your friends.
If you’re feeling confident, you could create your own home bar and serve some of your favorite fizz-fuelled cocktails, or make your own cocktail creations with a fresh twist. Give your bar a theme and add your own unique names to your new mixers. Treat yourself to a cocktail bible and teach yourself how to make the perfect passionfruit martini or rope in your own bartender friend for some mixology advice.
If you are creating your own home bar and are jumping in as a novice bartender, you could start with a classy cosmopolitan or cheeky sex on the beach. Why not take a theme to a whole new level and take your new bar theme to a party level. Whether you’re making a sneaky speakeasy or a chic cocktail bar, making it your own is the perfect way to celebrate World Cocktail Day.
You could even avoid doing the work yourself and enroll in a cocktail class for you and your friends. Learn from the best shakers and master mixologists. Don’t want to leave the house? Why not use an online video or order a beginner’s pack right to your door. Or splash out on an inhouse mixing masterclass (calling all bartender friends again).
You might be more of a cocktail connoisseur than a master mixologist. Why not get some of the good stuff mixed for you, so you can sample some delightful cocktails without having to actually make them yourself. Put on a cocktail-themed film, sip your mojito and feel like you’re in the summer sun.

National Lemon Juice Day
As the old saying goes, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Lemons have been used for a variety of purposes over the years, but none more delicious than lemon juice! It can be used in people’s favorite drinks, wellness products, and even some of the tastiest dishes out there.
Lemons are now one of the main ingredients in a whole range of things, and the juice is the tastiest part, so it is what is used to make up these items. The options are quite literally endless when you think about all the things lemon juice can do, from enhancing flavors in food to giving your hair a lighter color.
Lemon Juice Day is celebrated once per year, and gives everyone in the world a chance to experience the wonders that lemon juice can do. While this is available every day of the year, there isn’t anything quite like having one whole day dedicated to a product for everyone to get their hands on it and use it in a variety of different ways. Well, it’s not exactly common to wash your hair with lemon juice, but on Lemon Juice Day, why not?
One of the biggest benefits of this day is that people start to see that there are more to lemons than just lemonade. We have gone through a few of the uses above, but most people don’t know about these and just think of lemon juice as something to put on your pancakes or use in your food.
History of Lemon Juice Day
Lemons have become more and more popular since 1493 when Christopher Columbus first bought lemons to the New World. Since then, they have been a sign of wealth, a common name for children and became known for their bitter taste.
However, lemon juice has so many uses, it seemed appropriate to dedicate an entire day of the year to it, and thus, Lemon Juice Day was born. It has been celebrated for many years, although it is hard to say exactly how many take part.
How to celebrate Lemon Juice Day
Well, what can’t someone do? As long as it involves lemon juice in some way, this counts! In fact, why not set up a lemonade stand to involve as many people as possible in celebrating the day? Or, use it to make something great such as a lemon cake or a chicken dish that will knock the socks off anyone who eats it. Something interesting to try would be to have an entire meal that includes lemon juice in some way.
For example, the main, as well as the dessert, are lemon flavored in the same way! Perhaps even go one step further and plan a trip to France to take part in the French Riviera’s Annual Lemon Festival. Okay, so maybe this one is a little too far, but it would be a nice trip!
So, if Lemon Juice Day sounds like something to take part in, get the lemonade stand ready and the baking equipment out. Or, add it into a wellness routine to add that little extra something.

For the @steddielovemonth prompt: "Love is saving the last bite for them."
💕—————💕
A new Mexican restaurant opens up a block away from their apartment in 1992. Taqueria Las Palomas. They make it part of their date night circle. Tuesday dates are for the queer bar ten minutes sideways. Wednesdays they’d go to the park on a picnic. Thursdays are for non-competitive bowling that Eddie somehow always turns competitive. And Friday nights, well they’re—
“Margarita nights,” Steve had given. His smirk the size of the moon. His eyes glistening in excitement. His body vibrating with it. “Nachos. And margaritas.” He’d done one of his cute little hand gestures. Nachos was his right hand jumping into the air. Margaritas was his left. Funny enough, those are also the assigned hands in which he consumes them at the restaurant.
Point is, it’s a popular date night activity.
And it’s Friday. And Steve is practically bouncing up and down the sidewalk. Drifting from Eddie’s side. Nearly skipping to the destination. Every once in a while, Eddie has to catch up to him, pull him back by his left palm, and hook their elbows together just to maintain the distance. But, somehow, Steve still gets to the restaurant’s door first.
And, somehow, Eddie never gets tired of it.
Five bucks gets them the nacho platter. Three bucks gets them bottomless margaritas. Which, technically, three bucks gets Steve bottomless margaritas. For two bucks less, Eddie settles for a single Miller. He’s got to get Steve back home, alright? Can’t do that if they’re both wasted. (Steve gets especially drunk and ditzy. Who knew he was such a lightweight in the face of greasy nachos and some fruity little drink?)
They share the plate of nachos. Eddie will sometimes get a small bean and cheese burrito. Sometimes he’ll do in for a couple of carne asada tacos. But, typically, it’s just the nachos. He’s got kind of a light appetite all the time anyway. Steve, on the other hand, will get nachos and a burrito (Depends on his overall mood which one he gets. Mad? The steak burrito. Horny? A breakfast burrito. Look, don’t ask Eddie. He doesn’t know why the eggs and potatoes seem to do it for Steve).
But, because of Steve’s heavier appetite, they tend to tear through the nachos pretty goddamn quick. Which, really, is a shame. Eddie really loves the nachos. He’d eat them all day if he could. That being said, however, he usually lets Steve get the last bite. Usually being the key word.
Tonight, though, the nachos go by pretty quick, as expected. Steve’s got his breakfast burrito halfway gobbled through. And Eddie’s leaned back in his sticky booth, Miller up to his lips, guzzling down some lukewarm beer. Steve’s worked his way through three margaritas, his lips stained a deep pink, and he’s not swaying exactly, but he’s definitely a little bit clumsier. His eyes are pointed down at the plate of nachos.
One chip with all the toppings, jalapeños included (Eddie’s personal hell).
Steve’s fingers twitch on the tacky plastic top of the table. His bottom lip is jutted out. And his eyebrows are creased slightly. He’s adorable.
“Eds,” he begins.
“Go ahead, babydoll. If you want it, you can eat it.” He thinks he gets his point across clearly. Sure, maybe his breath does something a little mournful at the last chip being whisked away from him. But, unfortunately, his stomach doesn’t do well with jalapeños. Never has. Most likely never will.
Steve reaches out his right hand, dutifully, and grabs the tortilla chip in his loose tipsy grip. He brings it up to eye level. Eyes crossing at the little slice of jalapeño. Eddie holds back a chuckle.
Well, he tries really hard. Has to snicker into his can of beer. Steve looks like some puppy noticing a butterfly on a flower for the first time. He might eat it. Might.
Then, oddly, Steve brings the chip back down. He takes his margarita hand. Plucks the jalapeño from the top of the chip, places it on his also pink stained tongue, and brings his eyes to stare at Eddie.
He momentarily looks away from Steve’s puppy dog eyes. From his magenta lips and rose petal pink cheeks and his glazed tipsy sheen to his eyes. Tries to hide how hungry he is, not for the nachos, but for Steve’s beautiful face.
“Ed…Eddie,” Steve is whispering, a slur slightly noticeable in his speech. His margarita palm flops onto the table, patting incessantly at the back of Eddie’s right. “Eddie, gotta—I gotta surprise for you.”
Eddie looks back at him and hums. “What’s up, sweetheart? Whatcha got for me?”
Steve holds out the chip. His fingers are loosely grasping it. It could fall at any moment, really. But he looks like he’s trying really hard to just raise it to Eddie’s face. “Made this,” he murmurs. “Took the spicy thing off.” He knows what it’s called. Eddie should probably cut him off from his margaritas in a second. “‘Ts for you, Eds.” And then he’s bringing it closer to Eddie’s face, so much so now he has to cross his eyes, and jams the softened edge to Eddie’s lips.
It really is the perfect chip. Cheese and guac and sour cream, steak and some of the pico de gallo. And, yeah, Steve took the jalapeño off just for him.
“Eds, you gotta open your mouth. Saved it—Made it for you.”
So, he does. Lets Steve feed it to him. Eddie wraps his hand around Steve’s wrist, steadying his hold. His thumb rubs over Steve’s pulse point, it’s fast and warm. And he looks back at Steve, his eyes dilated, yet full of love.
“Thank you, baby,” Eddie says through his mouthful. Steve’s face stretches with his syrupy smile. Gooey with something. “That was very thoughtful of you.”
“It’s cause I—Cause you were sad, Eds,” Steve conspires, leaning in—his hands spread wide and out on the table. “Was thinking of you ‘cause I like it when you’re happy.”
“Thank you, sweetheart,” he feels the need to say again. “You made and continue to make me very happy.”
“I also love you. Was thinking about that, too,” Steve says.
Eddie snickers a little bit. Steve’s a sentimental drunk, he should’ve pointed out sooner. A very sentimental drunk. His eyes are shiny with tears and his face is wonderfully pink, there’s guac in the corner of his mouth, his breath smells like strawberries and jalapeño. And he’s probably the most beautiful and kind person Eddie’s ever come to know.
“Love you, too, sweetheart. Now, finish up your sex burrito,” Eddie teases a little. “Gotta get you home soon and take care of you.”
“Yes, sir,” Steve slurs back.
They won’t actually do anything, Eddie knows that. He’ll get Steve some water. And they’ll curl up on the couch and watch reruns of Golden Girls until Steve falls asleep over the length of Eddie’s torso. And he’ll slither out from underneath him, carry his heavy body to bed, and cuddle him with both arms. But in the morning, Eddie will make sure Steve knows just how loved he is.
For now, he just gazes. Lets himself become drunk on what it means to truly and irrevocably love somebody like Steve Harrington.

"and this is the shortcut for that couple over in that booth, they come in every saturday," the red head speaks quickly, but clearly to the new waitress, deep garnet eyes flicking back and forth between the computer and the bar. his hair was already sticking up in dishevelled spikes, his hands buried between locks of hair far too often for this to be a good shift; a busy event, an understaffed bar and training the newest waitress was probably the worst way to spend his saturday night, and yet, he still offered a soothing smile down to mina.
she was picking up the work swiftly (thankfully), already confident in most aspects of the job on only her second shift. glancing back up again, there's a couple at table 14 , and you're reading the menu at another. the couple is still perusing the menu, smiling with one another, giggling between each other. they looked kind enough to test mina out on.
"think you'll be alright to serve table 11 on your own?" his grin is sincere, toothy, her own face bright looking back up at him when she nods with a matching smile, confidently walking from behind the bar to the table. you're still focused on the menu, your eyebrows drawing down as you pore over the menu, your eyes a little glazed over in the dim bar, sluggishly reading over the small font.
mina introduces herself easily to you, bright smiles shared all around, even one tugging on his lips studying you both, a sense of pride swelling in his chest for his newest coworker. eijiro only manages to tear his gaze away with a sharp shout from one of the servers, desperate for an espresso martini for table 3 (glancing at kaminari's tray he counts three other drinks, and four customers seated in the booth, the nervous tap of his foot making more and more sense), dark garnet eyes drawn to you — and mina, only checking up, making sure she wasn't overwhelmed — again and again as he shook the cocktail mindlessly.
she returns swiftly, only one item jotted down on her notepad, your jalapeno margarita on the rocks. mina settles in easily, falling into routine with every server (the only hiccup so far was eijiro nearly elbowing her as he shook your cocktail). making friends easily, mina slides jirou a roll of silverware, not even a change in her heartbeat when ochako begs her to greet her table while she ran to the back of house, mina offering a soothing squeeze of ochako's shoulders as she flipped her notepad to a new page, assured when she slipped from behind the bar once more.
pouring your drink into a decorative glass (the kind that went missing too often on saturday nights, especially event nights), he decided to leave mina to ochako's table; you were an easy customer, the cocktail the only thing you ordered, he's certain he can leave the bar without a hitch and be back behind it before any of his servers places another order.
"just the jalapeno margarita?" there's a teeny flash of shock on your features hearing such a low timbre, your eyes falling to his chest before you register the height difference between him and the pink-haired girl that just served you, expecting mina with her light, airy voice and an easy cheerful demeanour.
your eyes widen (i mean, they have to in order to take all of him in, you aren't sure if you can even fathom the breadth of his shoulders in your tipsy state) staring up at him, looking him up and down like a deer in headlights until you settle on beaming up at his infectious, toothy smile.
you nod, not entirely trusting yourself to not respond with just drunken rambling about his impressive size; you think if your lips part, 'big' and 'woah' will just tumble from between them, sliding your glass of water aside to make room for the cocktail wordlessly, barely whispering a 'thank you' when it was placed in front of you.
"so, can i get any food started for you?" eijiro hadn't served in years like this, he felt stiff, awkward being out from behind the bar, so accustomed to being behind it, safe, in his domain. he doesn't even think he can list what's on the menu these days. the red head hastily scans the menu, offering the first item he reads, "our, um, most popular dish is the, uh—"
oh fuck.
this is exactly why he doesn't come out from behind the bar.
time feels slow, fuck it feels like it's stopped, the stupidly ornate glass sliding from in front of you to on top of you in half-speed, your features morphing from a polite smile to shock at the ice cold cocktail landing in your lap, rapidly soaking through the fabric to your skin.
your face remains frozen, your mouth parted in shock as eijiro's transforms into abject horror, reaching inside his pocket for a towel faster than you can process, nearly throwing the square of fabric into your lap with his frantic movements, attempting to pat you dry.
amidst rushed apologies, he rubs the towel in your lap, his finger pressing the towel between your thighs without a second thought, focusing on where the liquid seeped into your clothes the most. his movements only freeze when your eyelids flutter and you jump in the seat, your thighs slipping a millimetre apart, feet planted to let your hips jolt with a sweet sigh he had to strain to hear.
"oh shit, did i hurt you?"
your breathy laugh makes his shoulders relax, slumping slightly even as he stays with his hand at the junction of your thighs, "far from hurting me."
