books i read in 2019
this year i read a total of 109 books. i lost track of some things i read and didn’t list them on goodreads, so the actual total is probably higher than my official reading challenge number. i’ve added at least a couple i can distinctly remember reading as they were christmassy novellas.
this year i leaned more heavily into reading romance of all types. i’ve found it easier to read books with a guaranteed happily ever after this year, and i’ve not had much enjoyment in my other type of common read which is a murder mystery/thriller. as the year ended though i did find i was reading a wider variety of books, which possibly is because i now work for a library and i can’t seem to help myself from taking books home.
i’m hoping to continue reading a bigger variety of books in 2020, but i’m also happy to continue down my romance route. i’ve decided to set my challenge at 30 books this year to feel a bigger sense of achievement, as for the last two years i’ve set it at 1 and whilst this obviously softened the pressure on me to read quickly i’ve definitely felt it less of a ‘challenge’. i’m confident i’ll be able to get to 30 fairly quickly.
rereads are italicised, books i really enjoyed are bolded, and my standout read of the year is both.

Hey Dragon Fans! Let’s do a round up of all the information we’ve gotten so far about The Dragon Prince! This is quite a lot of info, so I’ll be throwing the bulk of it under a cut. (There will be spoilers for episode 1 of the show below the cut.)
The Dragon Prince, developed by Wonderstorm Inc., animated by Bardel Entertainment, and distributed by Netflix will be releasing all the episodes of the first season on September 14, 2018.
The official summary is, “Two human princes forge an unlikely bond with the elven assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
You can watch the promotional trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7Bf7JLnlOU
Promotional taglines used by the official accounts have been “Destiny is a book you write yourself!” and “dragon big”.
Netflix currently has the show rated as TV-Y7 for Fantasy Violence. The animation is cell-shaded CG, much like what you see in Fire Emblem, Guilty Gear, or Avatar: The Lost Episodes.
The show will have an accompanying video game developed by Wonderstorm* with the story tellers for both show and game working closely together to ensure the stories being told are well integrated and complementary.
Tumblr media
Our lead characters for the Netflix series are Callum, the elder human prince, Ezran, the human crown prince, and Rayla, a Moonshadow Elven Assassin.
The universe The Dragon Prince takes place in is divided into two primary areas, Xadia, the magical lands in the East, and the five great human kingdoms in the West. Centuries ago, Thunder the King of Dragons guarded the border between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms.
In the TDP universe, there were originally six types of magic: moon, sun, stars, earth, ocean, and sky. Humans developed a seventh type of magic, Dark Magic. With Dark Magic you find a creature that has that magic as part of their essence, you consume it quickly, and it unleashes a great amount of magic quickly. Dark Magic became a shortcut to great, fast power, but led to corruption and was wielded at the expense of the varied, intelligent, and powerful magical creatures of Xadia. The dragons and the elves allied to try to put a stop to the humans’ use of Dark Magic, but the Dragon King Thunder was killed by humans using dark magic and Thunder’s only egg and heir, The Dragon Prince, was destroyed. Now the world stands on the edge of all out war...
The first episode is titled “Book 1: Moon, Episode 1: Echoes of Thunder” and was premiered at the SDCC 2018 panel. You can read IGN’s review of the episode here.
SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE BEGIN HERE
Ezran is scared of thunderstorms and likes to steal treats from the baker with his pet glow toad, Bait. Glow toads are described as “the Grumpy Cat of magical illusionary amphibians.”
Even though Callum is older he is not the crown prince because he is the stepson of the king. This means Callum and Ezran are half brothers. The condition and whereabouts of Callum and Ezran’s mother is reported to be a spoiler. The King is a black man, and it appears that Ezran may be biracial.
One of the royal guards Sorin/Soren/Zoren (spelling unknown) is tasked with training Callum in sword fighting. Callum is disinterested and prefers to draw, unless Soren’s sister, Claudia, is around. Callum appears to have a crush on Claudia, and Soren helps by going easy on him in sparring sessions in front of her. Claudia appears to be very studious and nearly runs into a tree while reading because she is too focused on her book. Claudia and Soren’s father is a highly placed lord and leader of the royal army/guard.
It looks like Callum will be learning to use magic over the course of the show. What type of magic he uses is currently unknown. Based on the trailer I think that may be Claudia also shown using magic. Regardless of her identity, I suspect what the dark haired female magic user in the trailer is using is the Dark Magic we’ve seen discussed.
The elves that Rayla is a member of are called Moonshadow Elves (white haired elves with dark horns) and they literally draw power from the moon. They are at thier strongest during the full moon. The bracelet Rayla wears was acquired during a ceremony swearing loyalty to the Dragon King’s cause/memory(?). Moonshadow Elves demonstrate at minimum some form of cloaking magic, but can still be detected by certain types of animals. Rayla has a Scottish accent.
Rayla is going to be something of a mysterious figure and strongly conflicted about her role in current events, “testing her sense of right and wrong.” She tries to tell herself that “an assassin does not decide right or wrong, only life and death.”*
When the Moonshadow Elves stage an attack on the castle, the King decides to send Callum and Ezran away for thier own safety. Meanwhile, Soren and Claudia are ordered by thier father to stop the assassins. Callum wants to help but is told he cannot because he is only 14 (and 3/4!) years old and he must be 15 to fight.
There was a black-haired guard in the first episode (the one attacked by Rayla) that had not been formally named, but when asked by the panel audience they named him Marcos.
END OF  SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE
During the Q&A session (I’ve discussed this with several people who were in the room now trying to get clarity) it sounds like the question of if there would be LGBT+ representation in the show was very narrowly sidestepped. They told the panel audience that any sort of answer would be a spoiler. It seems likely that there will be LGBT+ representation, but it has not been explicitly promised, and I urge folk to temper expectations with the knowledge that while it’s wrong to use the TV-Y7 rating as a reason to not show canonically LGBT+ characters, it may end up being outside the Wonderstorm team’s hands to try to get it on screen. I’m cautiously optimistic. We’ll have to wait and see.
The staff did say they are strongly dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse fantasy universe, with an especial focus on visible ethnic diversity. We can already see the beginning of that with the King and Ezran.
Being on Netflix permits the staff to do a darker take on the story than they might have been permitted on network television, and they’re excited to get to tell a complex and nuanced story that explores moral grays and the idea that there are both good and bad actors in every group and culture. That said, they want this series to be fun, light-hearted, and quirky too.
The SDCC panel gave away two goodies to anyone lucky enough to get into the panel, a large physical poster version of the concept art we first saw with the initial announcement and an enamel pin of Ezran’s pet glow toad, Bait. The backing for the enamel pin announced that Hot Topic will be carrying exclusive merchandise for The Dragon Prince beginning in September 2018.
(A big thank you to elventhespian, owldee, and kohisu for thier live blogs of the SDCC 2018 panel.)

Violation
The most terrifying scene in Madeline Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli’s attempt to aestheticize the rape-revenge genre, the Shudder original VIOLATION (2021), is neither the rape nor the revenge. Rather it’s the scene in which the rapist (Jesse LaVercombe) attempts to gaslight his sister-in-law (Sims-Fewer) about what he’s done to her. VIOLATION is a very demanding film. It plays with time so we see the start of the revenge before we’re even aware of what Sims-Fewer is avenging. And Sims-Fewer and Mancinelli go so far in their efforts to keep the film from being exploitative there are times it turns a little dull around the edges. I’m sure there are some who will find its artsier elements — the use of classical music, particularly Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater,” and the frequent shots of nature around the film’s sylvan Quebec settings — pretentious. The rape itself is communicated through hushed tones and tight closeups, with as much time spent on a wasp walking on Sims-Fewer’s thumb as on her frightened face. Yet it raises fascinating questions about sexuality, sexual violence and trauma. Is Sims-Fewer a monster for doing what we’ve all fantasized about doing to the Brock Turners and Brett Kavanaghs of the world? Does her meticulous planning make her worse than someone who just lashes out? Is there any real recovery from that type of trauma? One of the hardest things about this film is recommending it. The female audience who would, I suspect, get the most out of it, is also the audience that would likely have the most trouble watching it. Is that a flaw in the basic conception? I honestly don’t know.

Man Utd hit back to sink Spurs, Lingard lifts West Ham into fourth
London (AFP) – Manchester United staged a superb fightback to shatter Tottenham’s top four bid with a 3-1 win, while West Ham climbed to fourth place in the Premier League as the revitalised Jesse Lingard inspired a 3-2 victory against Leicester on Sunday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side trailed to Son Heung-min’s first half strike, but United scored three times after the break through Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood.
Second-placed United’s fourth successive league win avenged their embarrassing 6-1 home defeat against Tottenham in October.
They were denied a first half opener when Cavani’s strike was controversially ruled out by referee Chris Kavanagh after Scott McTominay’s clash with Son in the build-up.
Kavanagh consulted the pitchside monitor and decided McTominay’s flailing arm, which made the slightest contact with Son’s face, was worthy of a foul despite the Tottenham forward’s theatrical fall.
Son put Tottenham ahead in the 40th minute as the South Korean slotted home from close range after Harry Kane and Lucas Moura carved open the United defence.
But United deservedly equalised in the 57th minute when Paul Pogba played in Cavani, whose shot was saved by Hugo Lloris, with Brazilian midfielder Fred on hand to slam in his first league goal since 2018.
In the 79th minute, Cavani netted for the first time in seven games as the Uruguay striker dived to meet Mason Greenwood’s cross with a superb header.
Greenwood lashed in the third in stoppage time and United are now 11 points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.
The defeat was a huge blow to troubled Tottenham’s top four ambitions.
They sit in seventh place, six points behind West Ham, and speculation will mount about close-season departures for boss Jose Mourinho and star striker Kane.
– Lingard shines –
At the London Stadium, Lingard struck twice in the first half to maintain his remarkable form since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January.
The 28-year-old has been reborn with West Ham, scoring eight times in nine appearances and earning a recall to the England team.
Jarrod Bowen scored West Ham’s third after half-time as David Moyes’ side moved one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea and two in front of sixth-placed Liverpool with seven games left for all three teams.
Qualifying for next season’s Champions League via a top four place would be an incredible achievement for Moyes, whose work this season has rehabilitated his reputation after his failures at Manchester United and Sunderland.
“We’ve got a great bunch of lads. Where we are is way beyond anybody’s thoughts,” Moyes said.
“It would be an incredible achievement. But let’s be fair, with the standard of teams below us, it’s great credit we’re just about hanging in there.”
Kelechi Iheanacho scored in the 70th and 90th minutes for Leicester, but having looked certain to earn a top four place, the Foxes are now only one point above West Ham.
Adding to their problems, James Maddison, Hamza Choudhury and Ayoze Perez were left out by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers after breaching coronavirus protocols.
“It was the consequence of an internal issue we had last weekend. We have a set of values. If you fall below that there is a consequence and there has to be or they won’t learn,” Rodgers said.
Newcastle took a big step towards securing their survival with a vital 2-1 win against Burnley.
Steve Bruce’s side came from behind at Turf Moor to end their seven-game winless run.
Matej Vydra put Burnley ahead from close range in the 18th minute, but Jacob Murphy equalised in the 57th minute.
Allan Saint-Maximin grabbed the priceless winner with a superb solo effort in the 64th minute.
Fourth-bottom Newcastle are now six points clear of the relegation zone and hold a game in hand on third-bottom Fulham.
Arsenal travel to bottom of the table Sheffield United in Sunday’s last match.

In the 79th minute, Cavani netted for the first time in seven games as the Uruguay striker dived to meet Mason Greenwoodҳ cross with a superb header. Greenwood lashed in the third in stoppage time and United are now 11 points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand. The defeat was a huge blow to troubled Tottenhamҳ top four ambitions. They sit in seventh place, six points behind West Ham, and speculation will mount about close-season departures for boss Jose Mourinho and star striker Kane. ֠Lingard shines ּ/p> At the London Stadium, Lingard struck twice in the first half to maintain his remarkable form since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January. The 28-year-old has been reborn with West Ham, scoring eight times in nine appearances and earning a recall to the England team. Jarrod Bowen scored West Hamҳ third after half-time as David MoyesҠside moved one point ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea and two in front of sixth-placed Liverpool with seven games left for all three teams. Qualifying for next seasonҳ Champions League via a top four place would be an incredible achievement for Moyes, whose work this season has rehabilitated his reputation after his failures at Manchester United and Sunderland. ӗeҶe got a great bunch of lads. Where we are is way beyond anybodyҳ thoughts,ԠMoyes said. Ӊt would be an incredible achievement. But letҳ be fair, with the standard of teams below us, itҳ great credit weҲe just about hanging in there.Լ/p> Kelechi Iheanacho scored in the 70th and 90th minutes for Leicester, but having looked certain to earn a top four place, the Foxes are now only one point above West Ham. Adding to their problems, James Maddison, Hamza Choudhury and Ayoze Perez were left out by Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers after breaching coronavirus protocols. Ӊt was the consequence of an internal issue we had last weekend. We have a set of values. If you fall below that there is a consequence and there has to be or they wonҴ learn,ԠRodgers said. Newcastle took a big step towards securing their survival with a vital 2-1 win against Burnley.༯p> Steve Bruceҳ side came from behind at Turf Moor to end their seven-game winless run. Arsenal travel to bottom of the table Sheffield United in Sundayҳ last match. 1. The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic
2. The Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
3. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
4. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
5. The House of Hades by Rick Riordan
(This changes a lot though)

Urban fantasy
what sections of a bookstore do you browse?
Mostly the young adult section, but I’ve been trying to branch out to adult books.
where do you buy books?
Chapters, amazon.ca, or small local stores.
what books have you read in the last month?
I’ve read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, Bone by Yrsa Daley-Ward, Salt by Nayyirah Waheed, Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, and Memos to No One by Jason Holt.

recommend and review a book.
I’ll recommend the one of the more recent book I’ve read, Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman. It was a really good representation of the complication feelings figuring out your sexuality can bring out. It wasn’t so much to do with the gay relationship as Elio dealing with everything going on in his head.
how many books have you read this year?
So far, 82, but my goodreads goal is 100 so I’m hoping to read a couple more in the next month.

do you like historical books? which time period?
I love ones set around the 1800′s, especially when they have female empowerment in them.
most disliked popular books?
Me Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews, they made a movie about it and I honestly hated it.
what are things you look for in a book?
I love complex characters that could be looked at as villains, I find them so much more interesting the the typical hero characters who are always “good”

Another life ruined
I want to tell you another story. I want to tell you the story of Jonno and Richard. You already know what happened with John and Ivan. Jonno lyed to Ivan that he was single to sleep with him. He has done the same to Richard while he was with Ivan. Jonno told Rishard he split up with Ivan and they were just friends. John told that lie in march this years. But Jonno was still with Ivan and all he wanted was sex. So he made Rishard believe he wanted to date and be in a relationship with him. From day one John turned the chat about sex telling Richard he wanted to "suck him off" and "fuck him hard in the ass". The story with Jonno and Richard is very similar to what happened with Ivan. John contonues with his way of hiding the the truth just so he can get laid. Risch is now struggling with his feelings as he finds out he was fucked for nothing. A few days after Rich finds the truth Jonno stops talking to him. He splits with both Ivan and Rich and contonies. He moves to Dan. Dan seems sweet and trusting. He buys his story too. It is early July and Jonno is already sleeping with Dan and telling him how he was cheated on in his last relationship. John tells Dan he was left heart broken, harassed, attacked. He knows this is not true but he also knows he has done it before and it worked. Jonno knows it is ok to make up stories to have sex with people and get money from them. We need to stop Jonno as this is enough. Noone can be lied to and taken advantage of. John is going to keep do this until he can and until he gets away with it.
