Immortal Hulk, transness and the Jungian shadow
Yes, Immortal Hulk again. I have a thesis to write about this behemoth of a run and I'm documenting every single idea that pops into my rotting brain before I actually start that process. I'm 4 months ahead anyway.
I believe Vol. 6: We Believe in Bruce Banner to be the most politically charged volume in the collection, and yet one of the most powerful political messages for me, a trans woman, comes in Vol.7, Issue 32: Hulk Is Hulk. At this point, Ewing has dropped 2 very subtle, almost imperceptible hints that point toward Charlene McGowan being transgender before outright saying it to our faces in issue 31, though that revelation would only have any meaning for people who know what HRT is. In this issue, though, it's Charlene herself who reveals her status as a trans woman to Doc Samson (who she may or may not have a crush on).
Tumblr media
This doesn't come out of nowhere; at this point in the story, she's suspecting that Xenmu has rewritten the colective consciousness to make Hulk seem like a villain, and she connects her ability to remember Bruce for who he was to her own process of self-discovery as a trans woman. She's able to reject this brainwashing, however, thanks to her very acute awareness of her own identity, one that she's had to assess very carefuly during her self-examination process. She's been, through her life, discarding the parts of herself who don't belong to her, and embracing the ones that do.
Tumblr media
This makes sense from a diegetic perspective; of course someon who has a very grounded, realistic and controlled view of themselves would be able to call bullshit on Xenmu's brainwashing. Thematically, however, there's something deeper going on here, something that led me back to the concept of the Jungian shadow, a concept Ewing clearly wants us to analyze the run through considering how prominent it is during the literal first issue.
See, the Hulks in this run (Devil Hulk, the "Big Guy" and Joe Fixit) are shadows of Bruce Banner. They're feelings and ideas Banner has pushed into the back of his mind due to his mind considering them incompatible with a hypothetical ideal version of himself. In short; they're projections of things Bruce fundamentally is, but that he represses due to societal rules and expectations.
The thing about being trans is that the entity you've spent your entire life repressing, your shadow, is likely to be at least in part made out of gendered ideas you consider incompatible with yourself due to having been forced into a particular gender at birth. In this framing, looking into your shadow while unaware of your queerness will inevitably lead to the realization that you are trans, and with a little bit of luck it will kickstart that process of self-examination McGowan speaks of.
This is the reality of why she's able to resist Xenmu's powers: she is already cloaked in her own shadow, she's taken control of her life and turned herself into the repressed version of herself society tries to bottle up.

Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams
Focused on personal examples of doing rather than texts to be contemplated, this book offers both an insight into how practising martial arts might build a broader physical and mental foundation, and an accessible introduction to Zen as a source of practical guidance rather than purely spiritual transcendence. The Brawler (2019)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
I have an idea. I’m going to tell you about 2019's The Brawler and you can tell me who you think it’s for. There is an audience for this movie but it's incredibly narrow, and not the one the filmmakers hoped for.
Based on the true story, Chuck Wepner (Zach McGowan) is a small-time boxer who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when Muhammad Ali (Jerrod Page) challenges him for the heavyweight championship title. His story makes him a celebrity among the locals and catches the eye of Sylvester Stallone (Anthony Mangano), who thinks it would make a great film. Unfortunately, his newfound stardom plunges Chuck into a downward spiral of substance abuse and poor decisions.
If you like the Rocky franchise and hope to get “a little more” by watching the story that inspired it, this film will disappoint you. At first, "The Brawler" follows the 1976 Oscar-winner nearly beat-for-beat with a few key differences. Firstly, Chuck is already married to Phyllis (Taryn Manning). Secondly, his rough-around-the-edges manager (Joe Pantoliano) isn’t all that lovable and has no memorable lines. Third and most importantly, our protagonist is 0% likeable. You have to admire the film for showing a “warts and all” portrait of the real-life boxer but if you’re going to show the man’s flaws and your objective isn’t to assassinate his character… try to show some good facets of his personality. Sloppy, dumb, unfaithful, apparently eager to abandon his three children (I think there were three, they get so little screen time I can’t be sure) and always insistent that none of what happens to him is his fault, you don’t cheer for Chuck. Ever.
The film is fundamentally flawed in that it keeps reminding you, over and over, of two movies you’d rather be watching: Rocky and Rocky II. In fact, Chuck receives a role in Rocky II from what is undoubtedly the worst Stallone lookalike you’ve ever seen. Director Ken Kushner does his best - for a while - by shooting Anthony Mangano (at least 30 pounds too heavy and way too old for the part) from a distance, in a hoodie, with sunglasses or with all three but eventually, the “real” Rocky and the movie Rocky come face-to-face and you’ll be embarrassed for everyone involved. Their Mohammad Ali wasn’t very good. James Diian Bonavia as André the Giant was worse but by comparison, they're mirror images.
So is the film for boxing fans who have never seen Rocky? Maybe, as long as they can tolerate poorly choreographed and poorly shot fight scenes. The camera twists and twirls so much it could make anyone look like a prized fighter. Even with these tricks, it’s obvious the punches are not connecting with any force.
For drama fans, then? ‘Fraid not. At 95 minutes, there’s too much material covered for anything to have any emotional resonance. There is no through line, no lesson for Chuck to learn and no character arcs. It’s simply a checklist of events until the film ends. The conclusion is supposed to leave you feeling good but there’s no way you will because it’s unearned. That’s how bad this film is; even if you separate yourself emotionally from the movies it reminds you of, you dislike Chuck so much you don’t want him to win in the end.
No one wants to see a movie about a screw-up that’s not self-aware. They certainly don’t want to see one that's badly shot & edited, with lousy performances and a sloppy story. So who is The Brawler for? People who like comparing good and bad movies. Here’s what you do. Week 1, you watch Rocky and the Here Comes the Boom. Now you see how a boxing underdog story can be done well, and not-so-well. Week 2, Rocky II and then The Brawler. Now you've seen how to follow up one of the greatest sports movies of all time with a solid sequel and how you REALLY shouldn’t tell a boxing story. (June 19, 2020)

Member Ceci: Given that the government has not yet held public consultations on this $20 billion giveaway – all they’ve done is hold a few closed-door meetings with a select group of people and friends – and given that the Premier lobbied for this giveaway before becoming Premier and hired another lobbyist into her office to orchestrate this giveaway and given that the minister has said that there won’t be anymore details about this handout until after the election, why is this government hiding this $20 billion giveaway from Albertans? Are they too scared to run on it? Run on it.
Mr. Guthrie: Let me provide you with a proof point here, one regarding the provincial board of the NDP. On this board sits Gil McGowan of the Alberta Federation of Labour, who was supposed to be a champion of Alberta workers, but, Mr. Speaker, that’s not the case. He opposed Trans Mountain. He opposed Energy East, opposed Keystone, opposed Northern Gateway, opposed the Alberta Clipper, and that’s not all. In 2016 the NDP appointed him co-chair of a committee to diversify the oil and gas sector, and by diversify we mean eliminate, one more reason the NDP cannot be trusted.

KETU 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾. vedic astrology
notes on the south node & ketu dominance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TW 𓂃 mention of drug-use & addiction
ღ this is based off my personal observations and research, so if it doesn’t resonate please let it go ღ
ketu ruled nakshatras 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
ashwini (0 - 13.20 aries), magha (0 - 13.20 leo) and mula (0 - 13.20 sagittarius)
ketu dominant people 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
to determine whether one is ketu-dominant, check the nakshatras of personal placements (moon, sun & ascendant) especially moon to see if they are placed in ketu-ruled nakshatras. other factors such as ketu conjunct moon and ketu in the 1st house can also give ketu dominance in a person. note: ketu in the 2nd house can give the appearance especially in the face of a ketu like person
rahu & ketu 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
rahu is the north node of the moon and ketu is the south node of the moon. rahu and ketu together symbolise a disembodied dragon, rahu being the head and ketu being the tail. rahu is associated with materialism and insatiable desires whereas ketu, having no head to desire earthy matters is compelled to turn totally inward
key themes of ketu  𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
moksha (transcending the cycle of rebirth), non-attachment, inwardness, mass disasters & wars, substances, subconscious mind, invisible forces like viruses, psychic forces, spirituality, compulsive behaviours
traits of ketu dominant people 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
♡ a huge theme with ketu people is struggles with apathetic attitudes toward life, lack of fulfilment, and lack of care for what others appear to strive for in life
♡ ketu women who are caucasian often have this snow-white aesthetic, pale skin and raven black hair, further reinforcing this stereotypical goth girl trope other’s view them in (kyrsten ritter  & kat dennings  both w/ moon in magha & rose mcgowan w/ moon in mula)
note: as well as myself, my mother is ketu dominant however she is biracial. i have observed that these people still have darker features, not only of the hair colour but also skin tone however genetically possible
♡ ketu people can speak and act compulsively and blurt out with little-awareness or fore thought, due to ketu having no head, no forethoughts
♡ not only can ketu people speak compulsively they also can have a tendency toward not being able to moderate the volume at which they speak, oblivious to how loudly or quietly they speak
♡ others tend to associate ketu people with wearing darker clothing and having a pessimistic & reflective inner nature
♡   ketu people can be heavily drawn toward using drugs, psychedelics, herbs in their spiritual pursuits (joe rogan w/ ketu conjunct moon)
♡ not all ketu dominant people are drawn to dark subcultures, darker aesthetics & drug use, but ketu’s influence will more positively result in spiritual pursuits, getting in touch with one’s inner light and inclination toward occult. in magha nakshatra i see a strong emphasis on working with ancestors in one’s spiritual journey
♡ the compulsive nature of ketu can lead individuals drawn toward drug use and addictions, as they can easily become engrossed in their subconscious mind, neglecting and developing disinterest in ‘the real world’ (amy winehouse w/ moon in mula)
♡ ketu people are drawn the most to the occult and spiritual pursuits, given the nature of ketu to seek purpose from within and neglect attachment and desires
♡ a well developed ketu person will lead a path toward true spiritual enlightenment and internal sense of understanding of true meaning from within
♡ despite ketu-people possessing a natural fluidity and susceptibility with psychic/ unseen forces, they are probably the most able to harness great control over these energies
♡ ketu domiant artist ghostemane w/ sun, moon & mercury conjunct in ashwini 𓂃 i had to include this due to his music being riddled with ketu themes ~ apathy, non-attachment, lack of fulfilment, spirituality, occult & drug-use in spiritual pursuit, of course following through with darker sounds and aesthetics
