A Sweet Stroll
Characters: John & Margaret Thornton
Lyn's Writing Event - Week4 - Day 23 (late submission)

May 23rd: Week 4: Rain
Characters: John Thorton x Margaret Thornton (fem reader perspective)
Fandom: Richard Armitage – John Thornton – North & South
The character of John Thornton and Margaret Hale were created by Elizabeth Haskell. Adapted for television by Sally Welch.
Word Count: 1.2k
Warnings: fluff, kissing, rain, public affection, romance,
The day opened warm and sunny, and John gathered the arrangements to take Margaret out on a wonderful spring picnic. Margaret was busy with his mother that morning holding discourse at the local women’s labor group. And John smiled to himself that he had such a head strong woman to hold his heart. Her bravery and courage inspired him to no end, even if it was a bit muddled during their courting. Relieving himself of some of his ego allowed his heart to open up further and love her all the more.
He thanked God every day for her, even though he was a thoughtful man and didn’t prescribe to theology in the devout sense. John Thornton was a respectable man, but a progressive one, in work and in life, he liked to see things grow into better outcomes for everyone. Margaret gave him that peace and reassurance, so he loved to plan these little outings to make her feel special and loved.
Dixon was busy preparing the basket for John, as he awaited Margaret’s return. It was a wonderful late Saturday morning; the hour was approaching luncheon and Margaret still had not returned. John sighed at his pocket watch, clicking it closed and returning it to his vest pocket. He looked out through the front window scanning the street for a carriage, or her strolling. He wanted to make sure she was safe, afterall, as his wife, Margaret is very important to him.
Dixon came into the front parlor with the basket, “There you are, Mr Thornton, its all ready, where is Margaret, beg your pardon, Mrs. Thornton.”
John smiled at Dixon warmly, and subtly, “I have told you to call me John, please Dixon, you are as much my family now as you ever were hers.”
Dixon rung her hands slightly less and tried to smile, “Yes, yes of course, Mr.. John. Beg your pardon.” Dixon went back to the kitchen at the other end of the house. John’s smile broadened a bit more, as she left him. His eyes scanned the streets again, and a carriage drew up, stopping at his door. He went to the door and opened it, as his mother and Margaret stepped out of the carriage. Margaret beamed up at John from the doorway. His mother looking as she always had, contemplative.
“Mother, Margaret, how was the meeting?” he said, towards the open street. His mother bolstered past him in the doorway, “We shouldn’t speak openly about it John, not in the common street”, she shook her head.
John faked a response, not at all perturbed, “Yes, of course mother, sorry about that.”
His mother rested in the parlor and Dixon brought her some tea.
Margaret got up to John at the door, and her eyes smiled well beyond her lips, “Hello, my dear,” She brushed a kiss on his cheek, as she brushed past him, he turned instantly and grabbed at her arm, keeping her in the entryway away from his mother’s gaze. His lips brushed hers in a needy way, the door closing behind them and Margaret felt lightly flushed, John held her to him, dropping his hat from his hand.
They parted, moments later, and John grinned happily. Margaret looked at him sweetly, “I should go out more often it seems,”
John chuckled, “Please do, it gives me reason to pine for your return.” Margaret giggled under her breath.
“Do what do I owe such affection, then?” Margaret queried.
“I am taking you out for a spring picnic, its all been arranged”, John said beaming.
Margaret looked to the windows, “I think it is a lovely day for it, when can we leave”
“Now, if that suits you.” John replied. Margaret’s hand reassuringly squeezed his arm.
John picked up the rather hefty basket and held it to him, as he escorted Margaret out the door.
“We will be back soon mother,” he called to her, through the open door. Then promptly closed the door behind them.
John and Maragret strolled down the sidewalk and towards the hilly woods above the factories of Milton. John had toured this section many times before on his thoughtful walks and he found a lovely tree to post under. You could see most of Milton from up on that roost, and the clouds were gathering playfully about the sunshine now when they crested the hill. A spring breeze played Margaret’s skirts, and she spun a bit enjoying herself. John set the basket down, unraveled the blanket and sat down, watching her. He opened up the basket and tore off a bit of bread chewing it quietly as she danced.
“Its such a beautiful day, John. Thank you for doing this,” she came to sit next to him. Smiling with her bright eyes and noble heart. He felt the draw to kiss her again, but instead looked down and cleared his throat.
“Are you hungry?” John asked her. Margaret looked to the basket, “I will be, but not right now. I am too full of this wonderful air,” She breathed it in and tipped her head back letting the break in the clouds coat her face in sunlight. Her eyelids closed, John moved to kiss her again, his lips just skirting along her, as they moved over her cheek and down her neck. Margaret momentarily startled, looked at him, “What are you, doing?” she asked giggling.
“Trying to kiss my wife, is that a problem?” John asked, his eyes shyly smiling, as he looked at her. Margaret threw her arms around his neck and pulled him down to the ground. He chuckled and kissed her again, deepening it, his need growing and shrinking in intervals he no longer could deny himself. Margaret felt her passions rising as well, but she knew this was an open place and not discreet.
Despite that they both kept kissing and then both flopped down on their backs looking up at the tree foliage blowing in the breeze. A greyish cloud passed over the hill, and John looked over at Margaret his hand on his chest, sighing happily, “Margaret, I love you so much more than I thought possible,”
Margaret watched the grey cloud move swiftly past them, looking over to him, and getting lost in those dyer blue eyes of his, “I completely understand, it is the same for me. More joy, more love, more everything.” She propped up on her elbow, hand on her cheek looking at him sweetly. John rolled to his side too, his arm reaching over her hip. The warmth of it seeping through her skirts. He moved to kiss her again, and another cloud loomed over them silencing the sunlight. A low rumble did not come from John’s chest, but from the clouds above.
Suddenly sheets of rain poured down on the happy couple’s picnic. And Margaret squeaked in alarm, Sitting up abruptly, and gathering the blankets while John scurried to close up the picnic basket, they both cowered against the trunk of the tree now, water dripping through the leaves onto both of them. They both laughed as they got soaked, and John set the basket down between them and kissed Margaret again, his hands framing her face. Margaret’s hands moved to his chest in a loving manner and the two kissed under the tree’s canopy, the drip drip drip, hitting they’re faces and getting them wet.
The cloud passed just as swiftly as it had come, within minutes and John and Margaret strolled back down the hill, a bit disheveled and considerably wetter than their adventure had started. Still in love and still just as sweetly smiling as they headed for home.

BAD NEWS BLAIR
She May Be Llanview’s Resident Bad Girl, But ONE LIFE TO LIVE’s Blair Just Wants To Be Loved

In 1991, a conniving woman by the name of Blair Daimler (now Cramer) blew into Llanview. Mia Korf originated the role but when the Amerasian left the show in 1993, blonde-haired, green-eyed Kassie DePaiva took over. “Blair is perfectly dysfunctional,” laughs DePaiva. “She feels everything deeply, whether it’s happiness, anger, lust, jealousy, fear… I love that she’s a bitch with a lot of heart.” Here, in character, DePaiva remembers the ups and (mostly) downs of Blair’s life.
1993
“Viki and Sloan hunted me down because they needed me to verify something for his book on Victor Lord - they wanted to know if Dorian had admitted killing Victor,” recalls DePaiva. “They found me down in Miami with my boys.” Blair had kids? “I was hanging out with some young boy toys,” she laughs.
1994
As soon as Blair returned to Llanview, she began blackmailing Dorian (again) and hitting on Max (again). “I pursued Max in every way I could,” she grins.
Around this time, The Wild Rose Club casino opened, and Max became addicted to gambling. While Cord and Luna tried to break his bad habit, Blair encouraged it. “It was a way for me to spend time with him,” she explains. “Max was addicted to gambling and I was addicted to him. One night, Luna kicked Max out. Feeling rejected, Max turned to Blair. “We went to Atlantic City and hooked up with RJ, who was a loan shark,” she explains. “Everything tailspinned from there. I became more obsessive and possessive as Max’s gambling addiction became worse.”

After their escapade, Max took his son, Al, to his ranch in Texas and Blair tagged along. But soon after, Luna arrived to patch things up. Cord kidnapped Blair and took her to Asa’s nearby ranch so that his friends could reconcile. With Blair out of the picture, Max, Luna and Al went to the local fair, but Blair escaped from Cord and took off in his truck. “I was driving to the fair to find Max,” explains the actress. “I swerved to miss Al and accidentally hit Luna instead.” Luna was paralyzed and Max broke things off with a distraught Blair.
“I attempted suicide by turning up the gas stove in my apartment,” she explains. Luckily, Cord found her passed out and stood by her while she recovered. “I finally realized that I was addicted to Max and started up a relationship with Cord because he was nice and safe.” Unfortunately, Blair found herself playing second fiddle to Tina and finally got fed up. “Around this time, I ran into Todd at Rodi’s,” she remembers. “Initially, I didn’t know who he was. We commiserated about what losers we were.”
That is, until Blair dropped her purse and spotted the prison I.D. bracelet that Todd was wearing around his ankle. “At that point, I thought, ‘Stay away from me.’” But the two lost souls kept running into one another, and Blair finally realized that Cord was never going to put her first. “On Christmas, I went over to Todd’s and offered myself to him as a Christmas gift,” she chuckles. The couple had sex and it was the beginning of what seemed to be a beautiful relationship.
1995

When Blair figured out that Todd was the heir to the Lord fortune, the money-hungry vixen set out to land him. “I tricked Todd into getting married by faking a pregnancy,” she admits. The couple wed on a beach in Key West.
Several weeks after the nuptials, Tina revealed to Todd that he was her brother and Todd inherited 27.8 million. “After Tina warned Todd that I was a gold digger, he made me take a pregnancy test,” the actress says. “I thought for sure I wasn’t pregnant but I was. It was hilarious!”
Sadly, when Blair was mugged a few weeks later, she lost the baby. “Those were really tough scenes,” DePaiva reveals. “Blair wanted a baby; so did Todd. It was the first thing that she would have had on her own.”
When Max informed Todd that Blair had originally lied about being pregnant, Todd lost it. “He almost raped me,” says DePaiva. Blair stopped Todd by reminding him of his past rape of Marty but the marriage was over. “We had lost the baby and that was a reason for us not to be together.” Todd filed for a divorce.

But Blair soon discovered that she was pregnant - again. “Everybody thought I was lying this time for sure,” laughs DePaiva. “But I really was pregnant. I contemplated not having the baby, until it brought Todd and me back together.” The couple remarried at St. James church. “We were really, really happy,” she smiles. Before they could go on a honeymoon, Todd decided that he wanted to make amends with Marty and flew to Ireland. “It was always about Marty,” DePaiva sighs. “I thought the only reason that Todd loved me was because I looked like her.” In Ireland, Todd was mistaken for Patrick, shot and presumed dead. A bitter Blair blamed Marty for Todd’s “death.”
1996
Luckily, baby Starr filled the void in Blair’s life. After a run-in with Marty, an enraged Blair cut off her hair (because she didn’t want to look like Marty), then went into labor - but gave birth prematurely.
Soon afterward, Blair began chasing Patrick. “Marty took my man away so I wanted to take away hers,” she says. “At first, I just wanted to get back at Marty. Then, I really started to like Patrick.” When Blair finally got the poet to sleep with her, Todd “returned from the dead” and spied their sexual encounter. Figuring that Blair never mourned his death, Todd kidnapped Starr. Eventually, he returned the baby, and Blair and Todd were about to reconcile. But Blair learned that she was pregnant - yet again - this time, with Patrick’s child. “That ruined everything,” the actress groans.

1997
Blair and Todd remained at odds. Though Todd filed for custody of Starr, the judge awarded temporary custody to Blair. Starr became ill with aplastic anemia and was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. Of course, Starr’s best bone marrow match would have been Blair and Patrick’s unborn child.
“Then we had the car accident,” says DePaiva. On a rainy night, Blair and Patrick were on their way home from the hospital when a sobbing Kelly (who had just been dumped by Joey) ran their car off the road. “I lost the baby and thought I had lost Starr too because of the accident. Those scenes were very difficult because I was pregnant in real life,” she confides. “Looking back, I wish I’d never had to play it.” After the accident, Alex donated bone marrow to save Starr’s life. Meanwhile, Blair was hospitalized.

“I was in a coma and Todd hooked up with Téa to betray me yet again!” she exclaims. “While I was in a coma, he divorced me and took custody of my daughter.” But Blair fought back and after a speedy recovery, vowed to win Starr. Unfortunately, on the night before the custody hearing, something went terribly wrong. “Téa provoked me to the point that I pushed her out a window so I lost custody because of that,” DePaiva says.
1998
Mel and Cassie began looking into the Cramer family’s history of mental illness. DePaiva notes that Blair and her mentally ill mother, Addie, have a very loving relationship. “Starr and Addie are the two people who Blair would do anything for.”

While working to sink her claws into billionaire Ian Armitage - she thought his money would help in her fight to win Starr back - Blair hooked up with Max as part of a plan to double-cross Todd and give Ian control of The Sun. “My relationship with Max since then has continued as a love-hate relationship,” explains DePaiva, adding that she loves working with her real life hubby.
Blair also found herself working with Todd again when he re-hired her as a reporter for The Sun. “I think the Todd/Blair relationship is my favorite storyline because it’s so multifaceted,” she says.
Slowly, Blair and Max started to fall in love again, until she discovered that Max was working for Asa and using her to obtain incriminating information about Todd. Max apologized profusely and even proposed, but Sam entered the picture. “I just want to be loved - but honestly!” DePaiva cries, in character.
Today, Blair is torn between two men: she cares for Sam but is being blackmailed by Max, who knows that Blair knows Todd is faking his alternate personalities. And if the truth comes out about Todd, Starr will lose her father because Todd will be sent to jail. “I think Blair wants to choose the high road, but I don’t think she’ll ever be able to do it,” says DePaiva. “Blair will probably be the ultimate loser and get screwed over like she always does.”

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Hold On” by Rupert’s People https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbrxbXH5bs. Rupert’s People was a “made in the studio” band formed around members of Fleur de Lys. In 1967, Rod Lynton was a “rising star” songwriter, so managers and record companies got behind him to record his songs by using bands-for-hire—in this case it was Fleur de Lys with Chris Andrews on lead vocals. To avoid confusion over the Fleur de Lys “brand,” the band re-named themselves “Rupert’s People.” “Hold On” was the B-side to the single Rupert’s People “Reflections on Charles Brown,” which received positive response in 10 countries. However, many said “Hold On” is the stronger track, amped up with muscular organ by Pete Solley (future sideman w/Eric Clapton, Al Stewart, Whitesnake, etc.) and edgy lead guitar by Phil Sawyer. The song was co-written with bassist Gordon Haskell (later of “Harry’s Bar” and King Crimson) and guitar hero Bryn Haworth (not credited on the record label). On a cosmic jukebox “Hold On” plays next to the soulful hard-edged blues-rock fusions of Spencer Davis Group, Pretty Things, and Brian Auger & The Trinity.
Lynton went on to collaborate with John Lennon, and Rupert’s People tracks have been reissued on soundtracks and compilations celebrating the best of 60s British rock. Fleur de Lys became a launching pad for several careers, with Chris Andrews going on as a solo act and collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, Davy Jones (Monkees), and other notables. This video was made in 2023 with remastered audio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbrxbXH5bs

Propaganda
Gena Rowlands (The High Cost of Living, Lonely Are the Brave)— Ok obviously she is the most beautiful woman ever but she’s also one of the greatest actors ever she is such a powerhouse and also her relationship with John Cassavetes is really cute. It hurts to see him live your dream but it’s nice to know she was so loved
Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady, Sabrina, Roman Holiday)—Growing up, Audrey Hepburn desperately wanting to be a professional ballerina, but she was starved during WWII and couldn't pursue her dream due to the effects of malnourishment. After she was cast in Roman Holiday, she skyrocketed to fame, and appeared in classics like My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany's. She's gorgeous, and mixes humor and class in all of her performances. After the majority of her acting career came to close, she became a UNICEF ambassador.
This is round 1 of the bracket. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Gena Rowlands propaganda:

has your husband made movies about how awesome you are?

Audrey Hepburn propaganda:

"She may be a wispy, thin little thing, but when you see that girl, you know you're really in the presence of something. In that league there's only ever been Garbo, and the other Hepburn, and maybe Bergman. It's a rare quality, but boy, do you know when you've found it." - Billy Wilder
Raised money for the resistance in nazi occupied Hungary. Became a humanitarian after retiring. Two very sexy things to do!
No one could wear clothes in this era like she could. She was every major designer's favorite star and as such her films are time capsules of high fashion at the time. But beyond that, she had such an elegance in her screen presence that belied a broad range of ability. From a naive princess, to a confused widow, to a loving and mischievous daughter, she could play it all.
"It’s as if she dropped out of the sky into the ’50s, half wood-nymph, half princess, and then disappeared in her golden coach, wearing her glass slippers and leaving no footprints." - Molly Haskell
"All I want for Christmas is to make another movie with Audrey Hepburn." - Cary Grant
where to begin......... i wont her so bad. i literally dont know what to say.
youtube
I know people nowadays are probably sick of seeing her with all the beauty and fashion merch around that depicts her and/or Marilyn Monroe but she is considered a classic Hollywood beauty for a reason. Ironically in her day she was more of the alternative beauty when compared to many of her contemporaries. She always came off with such elegance and grace, and she was so charming. Apparently she was a delight to work with considering how many of her co-stars had wonderful things to say about her. Outside of her beauty and acting ability she was immensely kind. She helped raise funds for the Dutch resistance during WWII by putting on underground dance performances as well as volunteering at hospitals and other small things to help the resistance. During her Hollywood career and later years she worked with UNICEF a lot. Just an all around beautiful person both inside and out.
Look at that woman's neck. Don't you want to bite it?
My dude. The big doe eyes, the cheekbones, the voice. The flawless way she carried herself. She was never in a movie where she wasn't drop dead gorgeous. Oh, also the fact she raised funs against the Nazis doing BALLET and she won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her humanitarian work.

Giving Second Chances
Gifs above don't belong to me they belong to their rightful owner
Wattpad request from Silverose365 Reader is a trouble teen the state is having trouble with so after multiple failed foster families the state calls John. The reader accidentally messed up on a job and gets called out until Rip makes a different choice than her previous foster family's.
John and Rip followed Sheriff Haskell out into one of the barns on the ranch. The three stops in the entrance seeing someone peaking their head over one of the hay bails. John slowly walked forward trying to not scare the girl off that looked to be a young teenager reminding him of meeting young Rip. “Hey there, kid. I ain’t gonna hurt you. Do you wanna come talk with us?”
“Where’s the girl from?” Rip crossed his arms looking at Sheriff Haskell.
He responded to John’s right hand. “She’s been bounced from foster home to another. She’s got a bad streak of breaking the law. I got a call saying the foster system was sending her to him until she bolted. Thankfully she ended up where they we’re taking her. Bringing her to John.”
Lifting my gaze up to the older cowboy guy wearing a tan cowboy hat I watched him bend down to her level. “Are you going to send me back to foster care….I don’t do good in that place. They all say I’m too old and reckless.” I had been moved around where I just started running away every time they sent me back in the system.
“I ain’t sending ya back. My name is John Dutton, what’s your name darlin’?” The rancher asked me offering his hand and I allowed him to pull me to stand up with him seeing another guy by the sheriff that was dressed in black with dark hair and hard eyes staring at me.
I nervously responded back to him. “Y/n. My name is Y/n, sir…what are doing now?”
“You come work for me.” John said looking at the man calling his name so I could put it with his face before he left us in the barn together. “Rip, you’re gonna teach her the way I did you.”
It had been a few months since that day and this is the longest that I have ever been in compared to my other foster homes. Placing a dark brown hat on my head I slide my brown boots on heading to the Yellowstone barn. Throwing a saddle on Lioyd’s horse I started tying it on until I heard one of the bunkhouse cowboys coming over to me. I believe Walker was his name. “It looks like a a cowgirl doesn’t know how a saddle goes on a horse.”
“What…what did I do?” I panicked beginning to twist the sterups and the back sinch backwards before I ran my hands through my hair.
Walker came over on his horse. “You put the saddle on backwards kid.”
“Crap, crap.” I mumbled under my breath quickly fixing it until John came over to me seeing that I avoided his gaze mumbling to myself unknown that he could hear me. “How could I put the entire saddle on backwards. That was stupid. I should have known that.”
It wasn’t the first the older rancher had seen her be hard on herself after she made some mistakes or didn’t be s quick as what the cowboys had told her to do something. And she would end up beating herself up over failing. John just hoped the girl saw that she was a good hand like he did. Because she was almost the same way when he found Rip years ago.
Walking through the barn I nodded to my boss Rip Wheeler who was walking with his horse when he noticed me. He climbed up on his horse addressing in my direction. “Y/n, got saddle Mr. Dutton’s horse. You’ll be riding it today with us to learn how to ride.”
Running inside the barn I took the reins of the boss’s horse tying the rope on the side of the wooden fence. Tossing the saddle over the horse I quickly tied it together. Putting me foot in the stirrups up Rip called my name. “Woah you think you’re forgetting something kiddo.” Shifting my gaze down to the ground I hadn’t noticed my hat fell off during the process.
“Ah shit…sorry sir.” Snatching it up I placed it on my head quick climbing back on the horse knowing he didn’t like wasting daylight and I always followed his instructions as fast as he said them.
Rip had me following behind him where I griped the reins in my hands bouncing with the horse watching the others herding the cattle in front of us. Normally he was leading the pack but not today. “Go herd up the ones on the side that get loose. You got that?” He kicked his horse to go when I nodded in understanding.
Running down the valley I followed after one cafe that got loose leading it back to the group. Staying close to the group another one got loose where I grabbed my rope throwing it over it head trying to lead it back but it just picked up sped. I screamed when it managed to pull me off my horse and I fell into the dirt. “No, no,…ah fuck!”
“Woah girl, are you alright?” Lioyd came over on his horse holding the reins of mine since it ran off towards him so he brought my horse back over to me.
Holding my right wrist I winced when I tried to bend it a little. “I think I just tweaked my wrist a bit….I thought I roped it the right way.”
“You roped it around the neck when it should have been around the waist so he wouldn’t run on ya. Climb back on your horse and help us finish this out.” Rip responded sternly beside his older friend.
Scurring to my feet I put one foot in the stirrup using my left hand to support most of my weight than my right. I should have done better, sir.” I apologize when Rip glared at me watching me ride off with Lioyd figuring that she meant well.
Once nightfall had come and everyone had their horses up for the night I didn’t come down to the bunkhouse for dinner since I was staying in the spare room of Rip and Beth’s house. Brushing my hair away from my face I had banded my wrist as best as I could and put everything I had in the duffel bag foster care had given to me. I just needed to wait until everyone went to bed to run rather then wait till morning already knowing what would happen. I had messed up way more than someone my age should. “I’m too old to get adopted….I will be better off just waiting until I’m eighteen. Only two more years left being someone else’s problem..”
“When I said don’t think you deserve this. I meant it literally but I didn’t you’d run from it.” Whipping my head around I gasped through tears seeing Rip was leaning in the doorway of my bedroom.
Croaking through tears I scooted up against the pillow and headband avoiding his gaze. “How did you know I’d be here?”
“Cause you didn’t come down for dinner and you ain’t missed a meal since the day you came here. You want to tell me what’s going on with you?” He presses on with his tone being both stern but went softer when he could hear me lightly crying in front of him.
Hugging my knees to my chest I buried my face into them sobbing even more when I struggle to get the words out already sensing what he was going to say next. “I’m a screw up here, Mr. Wheeler. I can’t do half the jobs you give me right…I don’t have great confidence even when I put in as much effort as I can. You see me exactly like everyone else does…a reckless teenager who won’t make it any longer in getting adopted. Cause I don’t follow directions good….so you’re done with me. You’re going to send me back tomorrow.”
“Where the hell did you get an idea like that, sweetheart?” He blurted out raising his voice in shock.
Peaking over my knees with my hair in my eyes I whispered back to him. “That’s what every family I have been with does. Why would you be any different to me?”
“Because you are the hardest working foster kid I have seen. You’ve got good manners and put in almost more effort than any of those bunkhouse boys do. And you ain’t any reckless than most teenagers are.” He came over and sat beside me on the bed removing his black hat when he went to take something out of his jacket. He unfolded a paper and handed it to me. “You are a darn good kid, Y/n. I am hoping to help you improve your confidence in time being here.”
Scanning my eyes over the paper in my small hands I couldn’t hardly believe it. “You want to adopt me..but I….thank you Rip.” Flinging my arms around his neck he was taken back not used to seeing me giving any kind of emotion like this.
“You’re welcome, darling. But promise you will still work as hard as you would if you weren’t gonna be my kid.” He hugged me briefly until he made me look in his eyes when he barely broke the embrace.
Nodding through happy tears I grinned up at the cowboy and lead hand of John Dutton. “Don’t worry I will..uh dad.”
Footsteps came down the hallway where we both glanced over over shoulders noticing that it was his wife. “You better call me mom and come eat this hamburger helper otherwise you’ll face the bear.”
“Yes ma’am.” I jumped off his lap rushing down the hallway making it to the kitchen table almost shoving food into my mouth overjoyed to actually have a place to call home.
Beth smiled at her husband when he stood by her in the hallway watching you. “She’s our kid now, baby.”
“She’s our second change at one and I gotta say she’s a pretty good one.” He responded looping his hand with hers giving her a gentle and the pair joined you at the dinner table.

"Maybe the only way to be transgressive these days is to be shockingly tasteful. This Lana Turner–meets–Audrey Hepburn lipstick-lesbian melodrama is so old-fashioned I felt like I was one year old after watching it. That’s almost reborn." - John Waters
John Waters's take on Carol made me want to analyze it as an old fashioned Women's Film, of the type written about by Molly Haskell. It fits perfectly into the subgenre she calls Sacrifice, of a woman's happiness for a love, a child, or (rarely) a career. This is a clear 'sacrifice for a child' story, albeit with a happi(er) ending offering some hope for love; giving up a lover in exchange for custody or visitations is right out of a classic melodrama.
Interestingly, there's none of the subtle resentment towards the child typical of those films. Haskell noted that Mildred Pierce, Stella Dallas, etc often portrayed the children the women were sacrificing everything for as ungrateful monsters, suggesting that the real life housewives who watched these films might not have been entirely happy about their own sacrifices (All That Heaven Allows, Haskell notes, was one of the few transgressive enough to outright say that maybe she shouldn't make this sacrifice after all.) Rindy, while too young to be a full character, is a sweet child, and there is nothing passive aggressive in the audience's desire for Carol to remain in her life. Then again, today's female audiences can't afford to be housewives even if they wanted to be.
Like a woman at a mid-century Women's Picture, I was swept away by the glamour and grandeur of the sorrow. I want to lower my voice and smoke and wear fur now, though I will have to settle for immediately going and putting on Besame lipstick. I don't often watch melodramas without some murder in them (those lovely Women's Films that are full blown noir), but it turns out a good one still packs a punch. It's beautiful.

Happy Birthday Scottish actor Richard Madden born June 18th 1986 in Elderslie.
Richard was raised by his mother, Pat, a classroom assistant and his father, Richard, who worked for the fire service. He also has two sisters, Cara and Lauren.
His parents were “hippies”, he says, and their house was pretty open, with friends always piling in for big vegetarian meals. Madden spent a lot of time outside, in the woods behind their house. He has several injuries: he shows me where he shot his dad’s old air pistol and blew off part of his finger, then managed to wreck the same finger when he nailed a wooden plank to his skateboard, then crashed it, so apart from the Hippie parents it was much like most of our own days as bairns.
Despite growing up wanting to be an actor, Richard was very shy during his childhood. To overcome this, at age 11, he joined Paisley Arts Centre’s youth theatre program. In 1999 he was given the lead role as Sebastian Simpkins in BBC1’s children’s TV comedy series Barmy Aunt Boomerang, that’s him aged 12 in the first pic with co-star Toyah Wilcox.. By 2000, he’d made his feature film debut in the Iain Banks adaptation, Complicity.
After high school he was accepted to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland and in 2007, he graduated.
Less than two years later, Richard had a recurring role as Dean McKenzie on the 2009 BBC series Hope Springs. Soon after, he landed the role of Ripley in the 2010 movie Chatroom, a film about a group of teenagers who encourage each other’s bad behaviours after meeting online. In the same year, Richard played punk band Theatre of Hate singer Kirk Brandon in Worried About the Boy, a TV film about the life of British singer-songwriter Boy George.
In 2011 Richard landed his breakthrough role as Robb Stark in the HBO fantasy-drama series Game of Thrones. Also in 2011, he played gay paramedic Ashley Greenwick on the short-lived British comedy-drama Sirens. During hiatus from filming Game of Thrones in 2013, Richard was cast to star as Prince Charming in the 2015 Disney film Cinderella.
Richard won his first Screen Actors Guild award in 2014 for the Discovery Channel mini-series, Klondike. He played Bill Haskell, one of two adventurers who travel to Yukon, Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890s. He further enhanced his reputation as a good actor when he appeared in the BBC drama Bodyguard in 2018, the following year he played Lieutenant Joseph Blake in the film 2017 and was Elton John’s manager/lover in the biop of the star Rocketman.
In January 2019 Madden won a prestigious Golden Globe for his role as war veteran David Budd in the BBC show Bodyguard. He also appeared in the 2019 war movie 1917.
We last saw Richard in the movie, Eternals, which was okay, but nothing great, he is one of several actors being touted as the next James Bond,
Last year Richard starred in the Amazon Prime series Citadel, I've watcheit and was not really impressed with it,I think he does pull of the American accent well, but I noticed there have been people saying he doesnt, Madden revealed he spoke in the accent for two years straight to prepare for the series. The show has been earmarked for a second series. Richard is set to appear in the feature film Killer Heat next, it is in post production.
In July 2019, Madden received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. When asked about his personal life during a New York Times interview following speculation about his relationships and sexuality, Madden stated: “I just keep my personal life personal.”
Madden was recently named one of ‘Scotland’s Sexiest Men' following a new study that identifies the most attractive features for men, he has competition though, also in the running are Bathgate’s David Tennant and Glasgow’s James McAvoy,
Richard, quizzed on what he would like to do next he sad “I’d like to do something in comedy. It’s nice to not… I mean we go to work every day and we’re like, ‘You’re gonna die today,’” he said, adding that he wanted to “do something fun for a minute.”
