final kingdom rankings

i decided to do the dumb thing that took too long and ranked all of the kingdom stages based on my personal opinion and ranked my top 7 over all (unit stages included). once again this is an opinion and i’m more then happy to discuss other opinions on the stages, but don’t use this post to bash me or others if it differs from your own. this will include notes on both the performance and the music itself.

with that said i’ll keep it under the cut as this will probably be a long post (spoiler: it is </3):

quick note: i watched all the stages by group and each stage in chronological order as i was taking notes. there may be some repeats of things or i bring up something that’s in a lower ranking stage if a higher ranking stage was one of the more recent ones (hope that makes sense). also if you don’t want to read everything there’s a top 5 ranking and my own final group ranking at the bottom.

skz:

stage 3 - i’ll be your man: seungmin and jisung vocals!!! i’m still not too familiar with the original btob song so i’m not sure how skz’s version varies from it, but their version i think fits their team really well. chan took a little bit of a back burner this stage, but we really got to hear the vocal side of skz shine through this song esp in their lower register which i think it stronger then their upper one lmao. jisung is really the only one (that i think) can belt some of those high notes so consistently. on the actual performance side of things there was an interesting use of sets and props, but not over done. there were some really ineresting dance breaks esp at the end of the song. the story of the stage was also i think one of skz’s strongest (and no guns <3). i really hope skz does a song like this in the future cause they can obviously pull it off.

stage 2 - side effects / god’s menu: really loved how we got to see a different side of skz on this stage with their acting! i don’t think they had another stage that was quite like this one. also loved the mixing again with both side effects and god’s menu with how they used felix as the transition between the two songs, and the FAT synths during the ‘my head hurts’ right before going into god’s menu. while this is a strong stage musically, acting and energy wise. i feel like there was too much of a reliance on props and a lot of work was done by the dancers which was visually amazing!! but skz is a strong dance group too and i wish it wasn’t as flashy as it was.

final stage - wolfgang: this stage and their 2nd stage are honestly tied but i think wolfgang is slightly lower cause i prefer the mixing for the 2nd stage. really dissapointed there was no epic organ player that was killed at the end </3 but that aside i would say wolfganf is a just a really strong skz song that’s a little more in the 3racha style. i really liked how they tied in some of the points from their intro stages with the green mouth light things and some of the samples used in the track! the reason it’s middle of the pack (haha get it cause their wolves.....i’ll stop) for me is similar to the side effects stage as it relies a lot on their dancers and props. it was a really nice ending performance to end their time on kingdom. (also one of their most messiest stages, but it was probably the one with the least amount of time for practice with everything lmao)

intro stage - miroh: really great intro stage for the skz cause we really got a taste of what was to come with kingdom (sadly no jinnie). the mixing was insane and one of my faves i think for skz (esp minho’s part <3). it had the same height of energy as the original tack, just much darker, and there was decent balance between vocals, dance, and rapping. it also showed their great work as a team with the small stunts in the choreo.

stage 4 - god’s menu x d4: don’t get me wrong, this stage is really neat with the deadpool stuff, but it’s also a stage that won’t really age that well? it was more on the gimmicky side of kingdom stages and i’m not sure why they had a large chunk of the choreo with guns???? that’s not needed that you. going into the good things...binnie popped off!! he really stuck out to me this stage rap wise. also the drop for the first d4 chorus was very unexpected but also really satisfying? kinda reminds me of the drop in the chorus for 1team’s ‘make this’ (go check it out if you don’t know the song). over all a really fun stage and their energy was really good, but just wish it wasn’t quite and gimmicky as it was </3

final stage - the real: ok this stage is also really really close to their wonderland stage but is just SLIGHTLY ahead it. this stage was probably one of the most fun ones to watch out of ateez’s kingdom performances because they seemed so loose? like they were really just feeling themselves on this stage and it just looked like they were really enjoying themselves out there like this is what they were born to do. i also love this song and it’s one of my fave recent releases from ateez again (i’m not too big of a fan of their fever series sorry </3). the energy, rap, vocals, choreo was just all there. i’m just really glad we were able to see one of these stages again where we go to see the group really just let loose and half so much fun performing before the end of kingdom.

stage 2 - from the wonderland: look...i KNOW there’s a tentacle, but i’m going to look past that. it might be the favoritism towards wonderland as it is one of my top ateez titles, but i think it they did do a really good job mashing it together with symphony no. 9. there was a decent balance between using props/reliance on dancers and the group actually dancing. jongho slayed that high note at the end, and it was actually placed well in the song where it didn’t seem out of place. and them the OUTRO just represents one of the main reason’s i love ateez with their amazing energy. high energy song, high energy choreo...just the perfect ending to get you hyped. also one last note....seonghwa looked so hot when he was walking through the line of dancers with that rifle (he just looked good this whole stage <3).

stage 3 - the awakening of summer: a very different style from the original and i’d say even a different style for ateez but it still works?? the beginning was a lil cheesy and not sure how the whisper talking/rapping through most of the song works for me, but the INSTRUMENTAL pls play it at my funeral...that synth line <3 i really liked the little choreo with the rope that san did and the overall choreo was also really strong. the outro was a little let down on the energy of it. it may be cause there was some slight timing issues with the vocals and backing track or they were just missing SOMETHING for it, but jongho slayed that belted note once again where i’m not too mad at it lmao.

stage 4 - answer: in the first half i really thought this was going to be one of my fave stages for ateez as the added strings were a nice touch and i loved how they made some references to their past songs and overall concept story line. overall musically in the first part it was decently balanced with a few ode to joy and answer. once it got to the part where it was the opera singers i was????? if they stopped there i think it could have still worked, but the ending there was just so much going on but it was also missing so much as well?? i didn’t understand jongho’s one belted note at the end. this was the only stage where i really felt it didn’t fit. they either needed to not add it at all or have him have one other note after it with maybe a break between the two notes to make it feel more complete. overall...a decent stage, but it really just didn’t have that ateez polish on it.

intro stage - wave: ok tbh i....kinda hated this stage? NOTHING on ateez or wave, just the song did not translate to the style they ended up choosing for it. i think say my name would have been a really strong intro song in the final style chose esp since it didn’t come up in their later stages. the choreo was really strong, but honestly the mixing just seemed like they forced two pieces together that didn’t fit.

the boyz: ok i just want to write a quick note as a general opinion i have across all their stages. tbz is a really solid group overall esp with dancing, but i feel like for kingdom they played it safe in a lot of ways and we didn’t see much variation of wow factors from their stages. they were good!! just (usually) fairly predictable like they set the bar high and then just never raised it again </3

stage 4 - monster: this ranks so high partially cause i love exo’s monster sm but besides that point </3 the vocal line seemed to be pretty much a copy paste from the original (not a bad thing at all) but once again the instrumental my beloved <3 i think because the vocal line was pretty much the same as exo’s made it a really nice balance between the original and tbz version. i wasn’t too sure about the giant snake towards the end, but it actually wasn’t too bad as it was more of just the use of an entrance, then just a bg prop after that. as with all of their stages, the choreo was really solid, but it was the arrangement of the song that really put this performance on the top.

final stage - kingdom come: dance wise i think this is my favorite out of all their stages. they had neat transitions from their pre recorded parts of the stage and the live part of the stages. really liked the part where the hand off screen was controlling the chroeo. then the dance break/outro!! not sure what it was, but i think it just really highlighted their strengths in dancing as a group. the song itself didn’t stand out at all and i think that’s why it ranks lower then their monster stage. it sounds a lot like checkmate to me (possible blended with salty???) so it’s a solid track, but it just doesn’t sound that different from their past ‘finale sounding’ tracks. it was a nice stage to end on for them as it was really solid, and it capped of their time with the kingdom series well.

stage 2 - no air: tbh the orginal song for no air doesn’t do much but i LOVE this mix of it. it might be the slowdown of the chorus that really does it for me, but it’s one of my fave mixes for their stage. really solid choreo and i liked the paired dancing with the other dancers in the first chorus. i think tbz i one of the the better groups when it comes to non-power dancing....not sure how to word it, but they’re very graceful and i love when they show it off and the dancing in front of the white fabric was a really nice touch. they also pulled off their stunts really well!! that’s another things they’re pretty reliable in, but it’s something they don’t overuse which is nice. a very strong stage overall for them.

stage 3 - the red wedding: someone is going to murder me for this, but i’m not the biggest fan of o solo mio </3 tbz did a really good job with the song! music wise for me is just that the rap sections i think didn’t flow too well in their rendition of the song. i don’t remember how they fit in the original but it didn’t fit that well in this stage ;_; i thought the rest was really good! their use of props wasn’t overdone and added some interest to the choreo that was already really strong. also really enjoyed the sections in the birdcage with the female dancer. another really solid performance by them.

intro stage - the stealer: LOVED the choreo and formations for this performance. they’re a really strong dance group and i’m glad we got to see how good their dancing is with no props or anything. the song it’s self wasn’t too special, it was a solid mix but it seemed like something we’ve seen before? i think it reminded be of one of their stages from rtk, but i don’t remember which one ;_;

sf9:

stage 4 - move: CONGRATS TO SF9 FOR BEING THE ONLY GROUP THAT HAS TAEYANG. i could watch that man dance all day damn. the only thing i didn’t really like/understand was the very end where they were standing in the rain??? it would have been neat if they had one final dance break in the rain box or a solo dance or SOMETHING...it just didn’t need to be there otherwise </3 but everything else was SO GOOD. the concept of the stage was strong, the mixing was fit the group really well, and with move being such a difficult dance, the members did a really good job with it. the props/sets used i think added to it, and there was a good balance between those and the group actually dancing. glad to know taemin covers in the kingdom series did the original songs justice <3

final stage - believer: taeyang once again <3 overall the track sounds like a really solid b-side, but their performance really brought it up to a nice finale song. loved their references to their past stages with the props and formations with the dances, it wasn’t too much and didn’t distract from the rest of it. the use of reflections was also really well done!! that prop was super cool and loved how they played around with it. overall a really nice way to end kingdom for them, and i think dance and staging wise, it was one of my faves to come from them.

stage 3 - the scene: congrats sf9 for being the only group that has hwiyoung <3 tbh this stage would probably be my number one of they didn’t have the guns during the choreo </3 it just...brought it down so much for me (and the blurred out knife???). i think the mixing was pretty solid as it was close to tbz version, but made it fit sf9 really well. the fight scenes were super well done and i feel like did add something to the stage. then overall the dancing was really sharp this time around!! a super good stage....just take out the dancing guns.

stage 2 - jealous: this was one of the few stages outside the introductions that didn’t have a super heavy reliance on props, they didn’t rank well, and then we never saw a stage like it again </3 i loved this stage!! it didn’t change drastically music wise, but i really liked the kind of rock style? remix of now or never and it fit well with the concept of the stage. the formations!!! in this performance were some of my fave and loved the bits of choreo we saw when the members were dancing with the female dancers. there were some parts with the members weren’t quite in sync with each other, but overall it was really solid and sad we didn’t get to see a stage like this one again ;_;

intro stage - good guy: if sf9 just did suit concepts in the future i would not be mad <3 but overall a solid intro stage! there wasn’t much difference music wise except in the dance break in the beginning from the original song. choreo was pretty crisp and overall done well. there were no ‘wow’ factors in this stage, but a very solid one overall.

ikon:

final stage - at ease: tbh i wasn’t too sure about the song in previews, but it’s grown a lot on me as this past week went on. it’s a great hype song and has the energy of ikon that i really love. the drop the in the chorus is really satisfying and it was just as satisfying visually in the performance as well. they used their dancers really well and the members also did really well with the chorus choreo. it was just overall a really satisfying stage for ikon and it was the only stage in my opinion they ramped up their more laid back energy and worked so well.

stage 2 - to the world: this is one of the stages that really does age pretty well. i wasn’t a huge fan of it mainly bc of the ending and it’s still not my fave but it didn’t take away as much from the stage as i remember. i LOVE both love scenario and killing me. the love scenerio portion of the stage i think it still one of my fave ikon moments. the acting was solid and i liked their story with it. in some ways i wish at least killing me was a little more hard hitting and less a copy and paste for the most part from their original. love scenario was an amazing opening but killing me needed something to make a solid ending song as it caused the energy of the stage to kinda fall off or not really raise at all. overall i do really like this stage, it just needs more of something for the ending.

intro - rhythm ta: i think this was my 2nd fave intro stage right being skz’s. i love the formation in the beginning and the vocal fry on the ‘ikon is back’ was a nice touch. it also just seemed like the most loose intro stage? like this wasn’t their first rodeo and just felt really comfortable on this stage. overall loved the energy of the stage, and there was solid mixing of the song and good choreo.

stage 3 - inception: this isn’t hate on bobby or anything but his rap parts really bought this performance down for me </3 it might have just been an off day or smth but...yeah. otherwise i really liked the stage!! the mixing was really intresting and they really made inception into their own ikon style. the sets used was also probably my fave overall? it was really really neat with the changing sets to match the song title. also the ending was super cool with the dancers in that final formation where they kinda slowed down. a really cool stage overall.

stage 4 - classy savage: family watching yg tv time <3 i think there was a really nice balance of both the original bp song and ikon’s style. tbh it seems opposite of what i said with the boyz..the insturmental seemed pretty close to blackpink’s, but the vocal/rap was very much the ikon style. the reason this one is so low for me is because it seemed like two separate stages with lisa? it was really neat that she was added, but it would have been so cool if he joined in with them for the final outro or something. she even had the same lyrics to the blackpink song as ikon’s changed so it just made it that much more separate. if lisa either joined in more with ikon or she wasn’t added at all i think this would have ranked a lot higher on my list </3

btob: another quick note....i think on the performance end btob is the opposite of tbz. they don’t do much with choreo but they’re such an enjoyable group to watch and their VOCALS are always so stable so i probably won’t have many notes on their dancing lmao

stage 4 - blue moon: concept and comedy kings <3 idk they were really feeling themselves but it looked like they were having so much fun on stage and it made me have a smile on my face the entire time. the concept of the movie worked so well with the style of the jazzy tune. i’m not too familiar with the original bside so i’m not sure how much it differs or if it does at all. there’s really nothing i would change from this stage...it’s just so enjoyable to watch from the concept, vocals, and peniel playing that piano terribly <3

stage 3 - back door: really close to their blue moon stage for me. i really feel like they got the hang of the kingdom stages at this point. i loved their remix of back door. they took a rap heavy song and turned it in to a vocal heavy one so well?? truly made it their own. the weird drop(?) after they say back door just works so well for me and the inclusion of the electric guitar is so NEAT. there wasn’t much as far as dancing except for the small bit at the end and in one of the ‘dressing rooms’ but it really worked for the concept of the stage. idk it’s just a really fun stage to watch and a really good hype energy at the end.

final stage - show and prove: TALK ABOUT A FINALE STAGE. i love this song on it’s own and it’s probably my top song or in the top 2 for the original kingdom songs. this stage is another one that’s so close with their blue moon and back door stage, but i think it ranks a little lower then the other two as there was choreo from the members (or at least not a lot at all). but even with that this stage didn’t feel any less grand then the other finale performances because they killed the vocal parts so much and the song itself is such a GOOD ending song. oh man i would rate this higher if dancing or concept also was involved ;_;

intro stage - beautiful and painful: (i think that’s what it’s called?): vocal kings <3 they really said we’re the best vocalists on this show with this intro and you know? they’re correct. i wasn’t too sure on this stage when i first watched it since it was so different compared to the other groups, but watching it again now it’s a really strong intro stage. btob is a really strong vocal group and they established that really early on and only gave us a taste of what they were really able to do. a great intro stage overall.

stage 2 - missing you: overall the stage is really beautiful with the lighting and the trees, but similar to ikon’s stage with lisa it seemed really disjointed. the vocal sections were really strong on their own and the dance break section this was really cool on it’s own, but it didn’t mesh together super well :/ a decent stage for sure, i just wish they kept the style of the dance break or just kept it the style of the vocal stage. i think they might have just added that dance section in there as the other groups had such dance heavy performances and theirs didn’t, but again it just kinda took something away from it </3

unit stages: i’m not going to write notes on the unit stages cause i’ve already written so much on the group stages lmao but if you want to more about/wonder why one ranked lower then another than pls ask! i’m just too done with this post to write it now. i will say 2-4 are really close in ranking. love poem took the whole thing for me and i wasn’t a huge fan of wither rap unit stage </3

". . . thank you. . . alright, I think I have everything for tonight."

"Eh, you never know what could be going through Yunho's mind, so you shouldn't be too surprised if he has thought about it once or twice." Standing up from your bed, your knees slightly popping from being in the same, stiff position for so long, you maneuver your way into your bathroom to assess the damage that needed to be tended to before dinner. Cringing upon the sight of your greasy hair, and stained sweater from countless fridge raids, you turn on the sink faucet to begin your much needed 'spa treatment'. "Anyways, so what is Chef Seonghwa preparing for our taste buds this evening?" You inquire, picking up a washcloth to dampen.

"Ah, little one, it's a surprise," He playfully taunts, the tone in his voice making you huff out in annoyance. Surprises were nice and all but you would like to know what type of food you get to daydream about until it's finally sitting on a plate in front of you.

"Let me guess, you've decided to treat us to a frozen pizza?" You shift the phone from your hand so that it is now pressed between your shoulder and ear, allowing you to utilize both hands as you prepare your skin care routine.

"Damn, I can't believe you figured it out. You and the others get to indulge on a frozen entrée while I prepare myself a lovely steak dinner." He states, amusement easily interwoven within his words. His drawl that was as smooth as velvet was dangerous in itself, but when paired with any form of teasing or amusement it was a catastrophe just waiting to happen. The sultry undertone just waiting to pull anyone into a delicious, sinful paradise where temptations were acted on rather than ignored. A heaven within hell, the angel's fall from grace at the mere prospect of being entangled, consumed with another being that was corrupted beyond a point of redemption. But, those sickly sweet, lust driven whispers would be worth the fall if it meant you could spend eternity with him.

Knowing that he is merely pulling your leg, you decide to play along, "Mmmm absolutely delicious. My mouth is already watering at the mere thought of a burnt piece of bread with a pathetic excuse of toppings decorated on top." Sarcasm drips from every syllable that is enunciated with your tongue, a genuine, but snarky, way of conveying the lightness of the conversation. A smile graces your plush lips as wipe your face with the cloth, the water alone already making your skin feel better, more refreshed than it had been minutes ago.

A beautiful, deep laugh reverberates through the line and you could literally feel your heart rate slightly spike as the sound danced around within your ears. Something so pure, so sweet coming from the lips of a man whose heart was as big as the moon and whose soul was as golden as the sun made you feel as though heaven had answered your prayers, blessing you with a magnificent human who deserved nothing less than the stars. Park Seonghwa had easily found a way to leave pieces of himself within everything you did or saw, intertwining his existence with yours. A colorful pattern so bright it managed to dynamically shift your view on the world from one of black and white to one of vibrant, explosive pastels and neons. He was the artist and his words were the paintbrush as he transformed your life into a living, breathing masterpiece. He meant more to you than anyone could ever imagine, and being so fortunate to hear his laugh, to be around him when he was happy, to see him at his highest while also being there for the lowest was, and is, something you hold close to you. You would never trade anything in the world for those moments you are able to spend with him, the memories too precious to take for granted.

"But on a serious note, the meal I have planned tonight will be to your liking, so you have nothing to worry about," He reassures you which does improve your mood. Not that you weren't in a good mood prior to his statement, you were placed in a tranquil atmosphere the second you saw his name appear on your phone screen, but by him confirming that the meal tonight would be up to the high standards he always set made your spirits heighten further than the clouds.

"You better not give me food poisoning, Park," You grumble, scrubbing your face with the cleanser, "Or else you and I will be having a very strong, very colorful discussion tomorrow."

He gasps on the other end, "I'm hurt, Y/N, truly. You've punctured my heart." He feigns mock hurt, and you can only imagine the cute pout that is present on his plump lips, the crease between his sharp eyebrows and one of his hands placed on his chest, directly over the organ that you wish would belong to you.

"Let me grab my sewing kit so I can stitch that tragic wound of yours," You smile, grabbing the washcloth to dampen once more so you could remove the soap from your face and move on to the next step in your routine, "So, have you heard from Mingi? Is he in town yet?"

"Yeah, his plane landed about a half hour ago, so him and Yunho should be heading back to the apartment as we speak," He trails off, voice becoming muffled, distant from the phone as he must have gotten distracted by something or someone in the marketplace, "Hey, you like roses right–" He's cut short by the sound of a loud bang, startling you to the point of your phone nearly slipping from your shoulder.

"Holy shit! What the hell was that?" You shriek down the line just as another bang can be heard off in the distance, screams following quickly after. Worry starts to flood your veins as you drop the towel onto the counter, fingers now gripping tightly to the phone as you press it harder against your ear, "Seonghwa, what was that? Is everything okay?" There's rustling on his end, shuffling that sounds as if something has dropped or has been thrown down. When you hear short, sharp breaths through the receiver that's when your anxiety spikes dramatically. Something is wrong, something is terribly, horrifically wrong. The screaming intensifies as it draws closer to the phone, panicked voices forming incoherent sentences are jumbled together as well, frightening you even further. "Seonghwa, answer me! What happened?" A faint whimper, a grunt of pain and one final, sharp intake of breath is made before a soft, long exhale is emitted. Your heart sinks. "S-Seonghwa?"

"Someone call an ambulance!"

"Check for a pulse!"

"Oh my gosh! He's dead!"

At that, the phone drops from your now shaking hand, landing on the floor with a smack. Your mouth slackens, head becoming dizzy as your vision begins to produce black splotches in the corners of your eyes. A pounding sensation is heavily felt within your skull as the bathroom begins to spin. You lose your footing, stumbling backwards away from the vanity as your lunch from earlier begins to churn violently in your stomach. No, no, no, no, no. This isn't happening. They can't be talking about Hwa, it has to be someone else. But hearing his name faintly come through the speaker by an unknown voice confirms your worst nightmare.

You’re numb, face the palest white possible as all of the blood seems to evaporate from under your skin, from your veins, your heart stuttering in your chest. It rapidly presses against your ribcage and you feel as though it’s about to combust from the pain that is pulsing through it, searing it so deeply that being physically stabbed in the chest would be like a measly paper cut – and you’d much rather be impaled a hundred times over than feeling what you are currently feeling.

Your eyes connect with your reflection for a brief second, in the next they roll into the back of your head, your weak frame toppling over, falling right next to your phones now cracked screen.

Ateez - Inception Thoughts

First of all, this is the first proper love song that Ateez have released. They’ve sung about love before but this is the first song that really seems to centre around romantic love and the emotions they experience because of it.

Second of all, Inception feels like quite a big departure from their usual sound. It DEFINITELY is a good way to shift into a new era. It’s also sounds more mature and less bombastic. It’s intimate. It’s also really, really intense.

also starting the song off with the killing part? BRAVE

I really like how sparse the instrumentation is at the start - it’s VERY DREAMY (text painting? Umu from @reacttothek will have to answer that one)

UGH i LOVE the pulsing low string/piano/hybrid synth during Yeosang/Yunho’s parts.

From Seonghwa up until Wooyoung, all of the melodic material is carried by vocals. There’s no melodic synth, just percussion. Then the synth comes back in with Wooyoung’s part.

Back. Ing. Vo. Cals. Backing VOCALS - Ateez always use them so effectively

The “oo-oo-oo”s

There’s a higher harmony over San and Wooyoung’s part which helps thicken the texture without taking away that dreamy aspect

Okay i LOVE the percussion in this first part of the verse - it’s regular but the way they stress the different parts of the beat make it feel like it’s staggering a bit

Hongjoong’s rap

we get different backing bocals - some classic Ateez “eyyyy-ooohhhs”

The pre-chorus build to the chorus is pretty standard. It kind of feels like it starts in half-time and then accelerates but I’m not sure. Yunho’s chest voice/lower vocals are really awesome to here, though. And WOOYOUNG OOF Usually tho, Ateez pre-choruses are elevated so this was a bit different.

JONGHO it is so GOOD to see him sing/dance again!

It is a typical Ateez chorus in that there’s a bit pre-chorus build-up...but the chorus doesn’t feel massive/big like you think it would. It’s like how in Say My Name all that energy from the pre-chorus doesn’t resolve in something faster. Instead, the chorus is really heavy and it actually pulls back. The 1st part of the Inception chorus feels like that too.

Nice light higher harmony over Jongho and Yunho

There’s one kind of snare-like percussion synth which stays really echo-y. I like it cos it keeps the dreamy sensation - like your world is kind of fragmenting

Okay okay okay the SECOND (2nd) part of the Inception chorus - the part which actually murdered 83% of this fandom (i had to listen to this like 5 times).

Segonhwa’s “every day and every nigh i’m gonna chase you” - oh my GOD first of all. That shit sexc. That’s all folks.

Jks. The way he switches from chest voice to falsetto feels so PURPOSEFUL? which makes it even more attractive because it implies a kind of very tight control.

Wooyoung’s ‘I in love’ layers over Seonghwa’s line and I’m obSEssED with it - it’s a totally different part from Seonghwa’s line, though both melodies move in a downwards direction. I think the overlap again reflects this whole idea of being in a dream. Things overlap and start and end at different times in a dream. It’s really just one sensation after another LIKE THIS SONG AHHHHH

Have I said backing vocals already? Yes I have. Will I say it again? Yes I will. The way they play with the lo-o-o-ve holy SHIT it GUIDES you through the song. It feels like it’s pulling you.

Weirdly enough there isn’t a very prominent bass synth/part in this section. Makes it seem more FLOATYYYY

Mingi and Hongjoong’s shouted line? we love rap line. It’s such a nice contrast to the moving vocals.

OH MY GOD THE POST-CHORUS DANCE BREAK I GOT WHIPLASH

first of all, who puts a dance break (it’s like a Solid Length as well) after the first verse/chorus? Literally only Ateez. Who is doing it like them/their production team? It did remind me a bit of the post-chorus in VeriVery’s Thunder which was also AWESOME

Again, it kind of feels like half-time, or their emphasising beats 1 and 3 rather than 1,2,3,4

Also again, it’s super sparse and kind of stays in the higher ranges. i LOVE the way the synth bounces around

the bridge bugged me at first because there’s no change in energy. like it stays at the same energy as the chorus when usually it drops off a little

There’s San and Wooyoung - i LOVE their part. They kind of break the 4th wall by addressing the audience. Rhythmically it’s also kind of fast. San’s falsetto is hot.

My favourite ATEEZ songs (Current bias group who I will die for)

Welcome to the first addition of my “fave songs from each K-pop group series thingy” I’m bad at naming things, I know, but let’s get started!

This is why Hongjoong is my bias, help that smirk aaaaah

Treasure: My fave of the two debut singles. Hongjoong’s entrance immediately pulled me into the song and the rap line in general do a really good job and honestly stole the show. My only critique is YEOSANG HAS 2 SECONDS OF LINES, but apart from that it is a very very good song!

HALA HALA: Like with Treasure the Minjoong parts captivated me and pulled me in, again stealing the show. Those two are seriously the best rookie rap duo right now! Yeosang’s “Raise me up, take me up” is low-key (high-key honestly) my fave part of the entire song, so that’s a plus!

Desire: Probably my favourite song from their second EP. San’s voice really suits this song, and again, the rap line captivated me and Hongjoong’s very last “I love my desire” killed me. The 18+ vibes also pushed me off the edge, in a good way of course because I am a hoe for all 8 of them.

Light: Yunho and Jongho stole the entire show, like all Atiny will tell you that Yunho’s parts killed them BIG TIME. It’s because his voice is just so precious and honey-like and EEK. It probably surprised everyone in the best way possible tbh.

Utopia: BY FAR my favourite summer EP song, the very beginning part by Yunho and Seonghwa was enough to confirm that. Wooyoung’s “Every day every night, here we go-go-go” is really good, and SEONGHWA WAS THE ONE DOING MOST OF THE HIGH NOTES, like WHAT. Plus they even released a Japanese version and an MV to go along with it. ICONIC.

Illusion: My second fave song from their summer EP. The fun wacky vibe of the whole thing just sounds really unique to me. Like, the English translation to some of Hongjoong’s rap part is HILARIOUS. A frog and turtle speaking to me, red sunflowers, what is that? (반말하는 개구리와 거북이, 빨간색 개나리 해바라기, 저건 뭐야?) SO RANDOM I LOVE IT! It’s just a really positive and fun song to listen to if you’re down, and it’s also catchy!

Mist (안개): Ok, so this is definitely my favourite Ateez song overall, yep, I just said that, and I have no regrets. The vibe is just so hypnotic and intriguing and the vocals from WOOYOUNG are something very special. And the ending “before the sun is rising up” is JUST *chef’s kiss* This song will always be in my heart and even if I eventually find a new fave Ateez song I will NEVER get sick of Mist!

If Without You: Like Illusion, this song’s cute and wacky vibes sound really unique and make the song what it is. This is probably their most innocent love song in their entire discography, I just love it! Plus YEOSANG HAS LINES, which talk about hanging like a cat which is super cute to listen to. Plus Yunho’s opening is my fave part, end of discussion.

WIN: A BOP in all possible ways. If you’re feeling unmotivated to do something listen to this song and there’s a high chance it’ll motivate you to break a wall or take over the world or something, I dunno. But in all seriousness the song’s message is good because it encourages unconfident peeps to be more confident. The instrumental part at the end can trigger anyone to do some serious head-bopping and crazy dancing, trust me…

Horizon (지평선): The best track from their Treasure Epilogue EP, imo of course, since many people don’t really like this song. But, imma be honest, I fell in love the first listen, so take that as you will or whatever. But in all seriousness this song is really entertaining and gets you head-bopping too! Seonghwa’s closer, a little closer (더 가까이, 조금 더 가까이) made my day the first time I heard it, so there’s that.

Precious: Like with Horizon, fell in love the first listen. The Hongjoong chorus bit is really good, he just sounds so badass in it and badass Hongjoong is my kink. (I mean what, ignore me I ain’t a hoe for him I sweaaarrr) Jongho’s “Hajiman feel it, feel it, can you feel it?” is so powerful and addictive to listen to! The flute instrumental is also just really good!!!

(OK, so I’m writing this less than 3 hours after their brand new EP was released, so I won’t include my fave songs from that just yet because I need to listen to them more so my opinion can be more matured with time!)

So that was my list of my favourite Ateez songs!!!!

Please remember that this is my opinion and that if your favourite song isn’t on here DO NOT get offended. Honestly I am just so sick of fan-wars and the whole “which songs are better” and “if you dislike this song you’re not a real fan” Like honestly frick off, thx~ I actually like all Ateez songs but this is only MY FAVOURITES from each album, so yeah!

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐥

Chapter 1: Wonderland

“Captain, I think you should see this.”

There was nothing in Seonghwa’s voice that betrayed his feelings toward whatever it was he had found, and that made Hongjoong awfully curious.

He arose from where he had been washing himself off in the sparkling cerulean stream and shook the water out of his hair. “What is it?”

Seonghwa threw a quick supervising glance at the other boys who still splashed around before beckoning Hongjoong closer. “Take a look at what I found.”

“Seonghwa! Wooyoung keeps splashing me!”

Seonghwa rolled his eyes fondly at San’s complaint and yelled back, “Ask him nicely to stop it!”

Switching seamlessly to the task at hand, he led Hongjoong over to the hole in the ground they had exhumed the treasure chest from. The older boy had been in the process of shovelling all the sandy grains of soil back into place when he had discovered something.

“A compass?” Hongjoong took the hand sized trinket from the boatswain and examined it.

Immediately, he noticed something was wrong. “It’s not pointing north.”

Seonghwa laughed nervously and looked over at the captain. “How is that even possible?”

“I don’t know, but...” Hongjoong was hesitant to ask, and allow another seed to grow into a fruit in his mind. “Do you think it’s possible—”

“—Eden has something to do with it?” Seonghwa picked the shovel up off the ground and resumed tossing dirt into the empty hole in the ground in response to Hongjoong’s silence. “You would think that, wouldn’t you? Maybe I shouldn’t have shown you the compass.”

Hongjoong frowned at him and closed the lid to the rusty, ancient thing. “That’s not fair. You have to admit there’s something about this.”

“Something magical maybe,” Seonghwa patted the ground a few times more than was necessary. Sweat was dripping off of him but he ignored it. “We could have the mystic take a look at it on our way back to the mainland.”

Hongjoong snorted at the suggestion. “Because she was so useful the last time.” A smirk teased the corners of his lips. “You know which direction it’s facing?”

“We are not following it,” Seonghwa snatched the compass back and gave Hongjoong a look that left no room for argument as he dropped his shovel.

The captain held up his hands defensively. “No, I’m keeping my promise. We go back to the mainland. Mingi has debts to pay, and Yunho has a little brother to support. I won’t go back on my word.”

Seonghwa’s gaze was on the ground. There would come a time when he would have to figure out where he was meant to go. Back to the castle? Back to his old village? Or somewhere else? He watched the grass wave in the breeze and swallowed back his doubt. It would work out when it needed to and not a moment sooner.

“Come on and wash off. You’re all sweaty now,” Hongjoong’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Right...” Reality caught up with him, and Seonghwa followed the younger boy back over to the stream where the other officers were climbing up a neighbouring cliffside.

“Watch this!” Yunho yelled down before throwing himself off the side and hurtling into the water below. Hongjoong and Seonghwa both gasped and ran towards the water. “Is he alright?” Seonghwa was fighting the stream to get to where Yunho disappeared. “Is the water deep enough?”

“It’s great!” Yunho surfaced and flapped his arms around like an excited puppy. “You should try it!” He scurried out of the water and back over to the rocks that led to the overhang. San was preparing to jump, pounding his chest and shaking out his limbs as if it would give him more confidence.

“Come on already,” Yeosang mumbled and gave a quick shove to the younger boy’s back. San shrieked as he tumbled down, but righted himself to land safely underwater and then popped up with a massive smile on his face.

“Please be careful,” Seonghwa cupped his hands around his mouth and yelled up to the younger boys before taking a cautious step back and chewing on his lip.

“Why don’t we join them?” Hongjoong giggled and went to get a boost onto the rocks from Jongho. “No thank you,” Seonghwa’s glare followed him up the cliffside and he crossed his arms defiantly. “I’m quite alright down here where it’s safe.”

He watched anxiously from below as all the others converged on their leader, picking him up despite his complaints and preparing to hurl him off the side and into the deep blue pool below.

“Three...two...one!”

Hongjoong flew through the air and plunged into the water, joyous shrieks and laughter from his team filling his ears before they were submerged. He came up with such a happy face, Seonghwa had to give it a try as well. It took some help for him to get up to the top but eventually he swallowed his fear and let himself fly through the air. It felt like true freedom.

The fun filled day came to a close with some exquisite roasted meat courtesy of Seonghwa who requested some help in building the fire for them to all sit around. Bellies full and hearts happy, they lined up on the bluff at the beach to watch the sunset.

“This has been the most amazing day,” Yunho sighed contentedly. “Would it bother anyone terribly if we stayed for a few more?”

Mingi nodded at this suggestion and turned to Hongjoong. “No one’s in a hurry to get home. I don’t have a problem with spending a bit more time on the island.”

Hongjoong looked at their expectant faces and smiled. He wasn’t too surprised, having noticed how much fun they were having on this paradise island of no responsibilities or wanted posters.

“There’s still a good bit of ground to explore,” Yeosang chimed in. “It would be a shame to come all this way and not scout anything out.”

“Well, of course we can stay longer! Is anyone against it?” Hearing nothing, Hongjoong clasped his hands together. “That’s it then. We stay for the rest of the week and the crewmen can be free to join us.”

A cheer broke out, followed by some silly dancing and a loud sailing song chanted at the top of their lungs. Everyone joined in and the celebrations continued until the sun disappeared behind the masts of the ATEEZ.

Wooyoung’s vocal cords pained him and his feet felt like they were going to fall off by the end but something about this pristine and wild utopia refreshed and energised him so completely that he could barely feel his tired limbs and only lay down when everyone else had exhausted themselves.

A fiery pink blazed across the sky against a blueish violet backdrop and it amazed him how loud the colours of the sunset were in the silence of the sea. “This is a magical place,” San whispered from beside him as they laid out their blankets for a night on the sand.

“It’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been,” Wooyoung agreed. “No, I mean really!” San flopped down and gestured to the natural world all around them. “There’s magic here. The source of magic is in the East, and this is the closest we’ve ever been to it.”

“Look!” A cry from Yeosang interrupted their conversation, but they both swivelled their heads around to spot whatever it was he was looking at. Magnificently overgrown species of flowers surrounded their clearing, the blooms opening up wider and wider as the sunlight waned. Their petals glowed a translucent turquoise that cast a luminous spell over their sleeping area and mesmerised the members. “Phosphorescent flowering plants!” Yeosang explained.

San nudged Wooyoung in the side. “Magic.”

The boys all snuggled up into a pile once again, a pleasure they hadn’t had since the Fortress dungeon, this time in much better circumstances. Various conversations went on until they dropped one by one into the rhythm of sleep. San angled his sleeping position in such a way that Wooyoung had no choice but to pet his hair until his breath slowed and his eyelids drooped. It didn’t hit any of them that there should be crickets chirping in the bushes nearby.

Eventually, Yunho’s snores lulled him to sleep as well and only the oldest hyungs were still awake. The two of them were the lucky ones, because as they lay in comfortable silence the cloudy canopy cleared and ribbons of green and lavender stretched across the sky. “An aurora!” Hongjoong breathed in pure delight.

“This far south? That’s magic,” Seonghwa gazed up at it in wonder. The way it glided through the sky and wrapped around the purple stars brought an instant sense of comfort that loosened the eldest’s tongue.

“I’ve been thinking,” Seonghwa confessed to Hongjoong after a few minutes, who cracked open an eye in curiosity. The older boy realised now he would actually have to explain himself and sighed quietly.

“I don’t really want to go back home, but... well... I want to know if everything’s alright. And how my old friends are doing. My brother, my parents.”

Even just mentioning them brought back a lot of confusion and turmoil he would much rather leave at sea, so Seonghwa took a steadying breath before continuing. “I just figured if everyone else is going home for awhile or visiting elsewhere, maybe I should try... something.”

He couldn’t guarantee that it would be reconnecting with the royal family and his birth relatives, or even reconciling with the woman who called herself his mother. But he could try something. Something small like finding out what happened to the old merchant he worked for what seemed like ages ago now.

“That’s better than nothing,” Hongjoong agreed with a reassuring squeeze on his shoulder.

“I’m always so angry at them,” Seonghwa admitted. “But Wooyoung said something back in the Doldrums that gave me second thoughts.”

“What did he tell you?” Hongjoong’s voice was so quiet his breath barely tickled Seonghwa’s hair.

“Maybe my brother did realise I had been switched. Maybe he has been looking for me ever since, and he just hasn’t found me yet.”

This was certainly food for thought and Hongjoong was silent for a moment before admitting, “That could be the case. I don’t know how you’d want to go about tracking him down, but... it might not be like you expect.”

Hongjoong was choosing his words carefully, not wanting to sound selfish but afraid in some deep part of him that Seonghwa would take off and leave him alone when they reached the mainland.

Seonghwa saw through his words and shifted uncomfortably. “I suppose.” He turned his back on Hongjoong with a soft, “Goodnight.”

Hongjoong screwed his eyes shut, exasperated. The older boy always knew too much even when the captain said nothing. It was like he could see into Hongjoong’s soul.

Eventually Seonghwa nodded off and Hongjoong rested in a moment of solitude, just him and the distant aurora, fading into the black background of the night sky.

He looked at each of his members’ faces and a smile graced his own. He could see past the sleepy pouts and furrowed brows to an unexpected kind of treasure.

Together in their utopia, it occurred to Hongjoong that in a way his work was already done. There they were, truly happy, in a world where true happiness was thought to be unattainable. Despite chains and battle and struggle, they were all alive and whole. It created an uneasy mixture of joy and sadness inside him as he watched them sleep.

It had taken him too long to realise it, but they had made it. Treasure or no treasure.

What would it be like when they returned to the west? Would they all leave him and return to their lives, their families, their prospects? He didn’t have any of those things now, so where would that leave him?

Hongjoong decided not to think about it. That verdict wouldn’t be in for several months at least. He simply snuggled closer and let it all go. Sleep washed over him in its cleansing folds for a nice long stretch that remained unbroken until dawn touched the peaks of the palm trees.

It was Seonghwa who shook the Captain awake with concern written all over his face. Hongjoong didn’t need any more explanation to follow him away from the campsite to a secluded area of the beach where they could speak freely.

“I just went back to the ship to fetch some food for breakfast and...” he shook his own head in amazement until Hongjoong nodded for him to go on. “The mainsail— it’s all torn up. Completely useless. I asked around but none of the men have the faintest what happened to it.”

Hongjoong turned to squint at the silhouette of his beloved ship where it was anchored and groaned quietly. It was too early for this. “Someone on board must have done something. It didn’t storm last night; the wind wasn’t even strong.”

“Hongjoong, it looks like...” Seonghwa was struggling to find the words. “Like an animal got into it. It’s shredded, the kind of shredded you can only do with claws or a very ragged sword.”

They had a true mystery on their hands. “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen any animals at all on this island,” Hongjoong was lost in thought, but Seonghwa made a suggestion regardless.

“Yeosang wanted to explore. You could ask him to take a few others and scout the place out. Maybe he’ll report back that there is a massive, dangerous, clawed, island animal in the vicinity that can also swim and is quiet enough to sneak on deck and destroy our mainsail for no apparent reason.” As Seonghwa listed the attributes, they began to sound more and more ridiculous. “What kind of creature has even half of those qualities?” He grumbled and returned to the campsite to get a fire going for the food.

Hongjoong trailed behind him, not overly concerned. “I’ll get out there today and see what I can do about it.”

The announcement was made over breakfast. “It looks like our stay will be extended indefinitely until I make repairs to the ATEEZ. We were already planning on taking our time here, now it seems we have a solid reason to. Yeosang, I know you wanted to do some exploring,” here Hongjoong shifted his attention to the navigator. “Now would be a good time.”

Yeosang was unfazed by the news and went about selecting his team as the dishes were being cleared away. He hesitated to take both Wooyoung and San but each had expressed interest and he couldn’t very well deny them. Jongho was added as the other level-headed member to round out the scouting team, and once food and supplies had been packed onto their backs, they were off.

To Wooyoung, the foliage seemed like that of any other island, but Yeosang gasped and fawned over everything, scrutinising each leaf and twig like he had never seen one before. By noon they had climbed to the top of the westernmost hill, and clouds drew over the blazing sun to offer them some shade.

Even the stoic Jongho sucked in a breath of amazement as drops of rain descended on them. They weren’t just any drops of rain. A distinct gold hue tinted each droplet that gently cascaded from the heavens and rolled off the trees and blades of grass. The sweet scent of freshly watered earth reached them and Wooyoung was loath to scramble for shelter.

“Golden rain? Have you ever seen anything like it?” Yeosang’s distracted shake of the head was a clear indication that he had not. Wooyoung extended his hand to let the liquid pool in it, watching the sparkly substance swirl in enchantment.

“Magic!” San breathed from next to him, cross eyed as he watched it drip from his hair. “It reminds me of the underwater pools in the Sunken City,” Jongho suddenly said.

“Do you think there’s any relation?” Wooyoung knew it was unlikely that Jongho could answer him, but no one else present had seen the pearly substance in the Sunken City and the entire concept of magic was still very foreign to him. “I can’t be sure. I wonder if the others are seeing this too.”

It felt like any other rain, and the travellers scrambled to find cover from it but watched dumbstruck all the same as glittering gold streamed down the leaves and dripped to the ground. There was a delicate beauty in the way the green landscape soaked in its nourishment, as if it were a shower of golden coins with which to grow a neighbourhood of plants.

San had a legitimate question to ask once the downpour slowed. “If the rain is gold, why are the plants green?”

They had their answer as they journeyed further inland, over the other side of the hill and out of sight of the coast. Verdant green gave way to a spectrum of colourful plants in the thickening forest.

Yeosang inspected them thoroughly and concluded that they contained a kind of dye that gave them such a bold hue and the golden rain did nothing to affect the tint of the foliage.

“We should take some back to dye our hair with!” San was already uprooting the floppy little sprouts and shoving them into his pockets. Wooyoung also ignored Yeosang’s cautions against taking wild magical things they knew nothing about and harvested some plants for his own use. Time to get rid of that washed out purple.

San skipped away to inspect neighbouring fields of pink grass and Jongho followed him at a distance.

“Don’t you think there’s something odd about it?” Yeosang remarked to Wooyoung, giving in to the temptation and pulling a few dye plants up as well. “Everything here is quite similar to how it is back home, with just one or two slight differences.”

“San said it was magic,” Wooyoung shrugged it off. “Haven’t you seen enough unexplainable phenomena to believe in magic by now? Especially with the slave master and his spellbook...”

Yeosang visibly withdrew at this, tensing in clear distress, and Wooyoung repressed the urge to smack himself on the forehead.

Yeosang was touchy about the subject of the Fortress island still, even after months of straight sailing elsewhere. The stain it had left was more stubborn than he had thought.

“Well, no matter,” he began a somewhat clumsy attempt to play it off and patch it up. “I much prefer this type of magic.” A sigh of relief escaped his lips as Yeosang nodded and went along with the change in subject. “Perhaps we should bring some specimen back so the others can see...”

“Over here!” It was Jongho’s yell that sliced through the tension. He had rejoined San. “Pink sand!”

...

“What do you think will happen if I drink it?”

Mingi’s whisper was curious but nervous, even as Yunho goaded him on with an excited nod.

“You remember what happened last time we decided to eat wild food on an uninhabited island,” Hongjoong warned from where he sat on the main deck, repairing the torn sail. Mingi and Yunho had tagged along under the pretence of being helpful but had mostly gawked at the golden rain sprinkling from the heavens and dashed to collect it in buckets.

Hongjoong had to admit it looked every bit as enticing as the hallucination fruit from Maddox’s Island and suddenly worried about Seonghwa, by himself on the beach. Perhaps he should’ve insisted he come along to the ship too, rather than stay alone. Once the thought crossed his mind he shook his head at how ridiculous it was. Seonghwa could take care of himself, he always had. Hongjoong paused in his sewing as it occurred to him that older boy was growing on him.

“—two, three, go!”

The captain’s head snapped up. Yunho and Mingi each had a cup full of golden liquid in their hands, their arms linked as they threw back their magic shots simultaneously.

“No no no!” Hongjoong dropped everything and ran over. “I said not to drink it!”

...

“Seonghwa, are you sure about this?”

“Do it.”

Jongho nodded curtly and got to work painting the eldest’s hair a stunning platinum blonde.

They had returned from their day trip as soon as their pockets were full of dye plants and wasted no time getting to work on their appearances. He had already given himself and Yeosang some very sensible shades of brown, and Wooyoung and San were arguing with each other about which colour each of them should dye their hair.

“Blonde would look better on me, why don’t you dye your hair brown?” San pouted and folded his arms.

“Because everyone else is dying their hair brown,” Wooyoung rolled his eyes. “Blonde would look better on me than you for sure! It’s not even an argument. Yeosang, what do you think?”

Yeosang raised his hands in surrender. “I’m staying out of it.”

“I think you should both go blonde,” Seonghwa piped up. “That would balance us out.”

San’s arms dropped as he had a thought. “Brown and blonde are both boring. Maybe I’ll try several things at once...” Wooyoung gleefully snatched the pigmented plant he and San had been fighting over as San rustled through the others he had grabbed.

“Captain incoming!” Yeosang squinted at the horizon and reported back, barely making out the longboats silhouetted with the sunset behind them. “And he’s brought crew members!”

The three who had been on the ATEEZ all day rowed their way to the beach and left the men to unload their things while they joined the other officers at the campsite.

“Seonghwa? I almost didn’t recognise you!” Hongjoong laughed in amazement at his transformation. “Did you bring some back for us?”

Yunho was jumping up and down in anticipation until Yeosang, San, and Wooyoung unloaded their prize plants. It was not a question of whether he wanted to dye his hair, but which colour he thought was the most interesting as he examined each one carefully.

Mingi decided on yet another brown, to make his almost grown out blue disappear, and Jongho and Yeosang approved of his choice.

Yunho selected a shade of blue, much lighter than Mingi’s previous deep royal blue, but Jongho took one look at it and shook his head. “You’ll certainly damage your hair with that one.”

It was too late, however. Already San was painting it onto the taller boy with barely controlled excitement.

Once Seonghwa was finished he pulled Jongho and Yeosang aside and whispered a plan to them. “It’s time to cut that hair. When I say go, we grab him and finish it quick. Jongho, have you picked a colour for him yet?”

There was no question who they were talking about, and Jongho answered in the affirmative before they disbanded their secret meeting and pretended as if nothing had happened.

Hongjoong wasn’t paying attention anyway, focused intently on making sure San didn’t destroy Yunho’s hair.

Suddenly a pair of arms seized him and he was spirited away to the side of the pool where he was confronted by his own reflection and the glint of a pair of scissors. “Wait—!”

But it was too late. The trio’s plot was too well executed and in a few moments long locks of sandy blonde fell into the stream and floated away.

“Don’t squirm if you don’t want to cut yourself,” Seonghwa muttered, relaxing his hold on the younger boy as he calmed in realisation.

“Very covert of the three of you,” Hongjoong shot back. “You know I can still assign you to deck swabbing duty!”

“You won’t!” Yeosang smirked and popped into view for a moment before leaving to retrieve something. “You’ll thank us later,” he went on and began dying his captain’s hair.

There was nothing to do but sit around and wait, and once Jongho gave him permission to move Hongjoong peered into the water to catch sight of his reflection. A vibrant red now coated his hair, and he was tempted for a second to dislike it, but couldn’t stop the smile from spreading on his face. The three self-proclaimed hairstylists waited with bated breath for his verdict. “It looks good.”

“It looks good!” “I knew it!” “We told you you’d thank us!” The three chattered and congratulated themselves while Hongjoong turned his head to see it from every angle.

He had to admit he really liked it. There was a youthful vibe around him now, the cherry red a bold statement that could be seen a mile away.

The others seemed to agree when they rejoined them, although San corrected him that he looked more like a strawberry.

The sun descended peacefully, and after the evening meal Mingi dragged the boatswain’s mate along with him and presented him to Hongjoong.

“Gyuwook has a violin with him, I say we have some music tonight!” The ruckus was twice as chaotic with an entire crew dancing along but every bit as enjoyable making fools of themselves and watching each other make fools of themselves. The songs varied in tempo but not in energy, and time flashed by unnoticed.

The festivities were cut short by another sudden rain shower, and it took a few seconds but the officers recognised the droplets to be a different colour than expected. “...Green?”

Wooyoung trained his eyes on the dirt as they ran for cover, curious to see whether the change in colour would have any effect. San was antsy again and volunteered to get firewood as the old wood was now soaked.

It had been a few too many minutes when Yunho decided to go check if the younger boy was alright and a few too many minutes went by yet again, before a frantic San appeared yelling for help.

The rest of the officers hurried along after the panting boy, panic growing at every turn in the road and every shadow that wasn’t their Yunho. Hongjoong couldn’t get a word out of San, but the problem explained itself when they finally arrived at a gorge in the forest where Yunho lay on the ground, tossed around by violent convulsions.

The officers all hovered around him, trying to find some way to help. It occurred to Wooyoung that San was the one who should be able to do something about it and yet had come running to the rest of them. He shook his friend until he met eyes with him. “What happened?”

San regained his voice briefly. “The pit, he looked into the pit...”

“This pit?” Mingi made a move towards the side of the ravine but was dragged back from the edge by a spooked San before he could see for himself.

“Don’t look into it!” San gasped for breath, looking up at Hongjoong in horror. “All the animals on the island. They’re all there, dead.” Wooyoung only half heard the explanation as he knelt, trying to get a response from Yunho.

Yeosang yelled at everyone to stand away from him but Wooyoung itched to try to calm Yunho himself. It was deeply terrifying the way he jerked around involuntarily. The seizing had slowed but still he stared into space until San cautiously approached him and tapped him on the shoulder.

As if surfacing in the sea, Yunho blinked a few times and looked more aware. There was a dark air of shame around him and he said nothing as Jongho helped him up but the pairs of anxious eyes on him won out in the end.

“I’m alright... I think.”

“Yunho, do you remember what happened?” Seonghwa was afraid to raise his voice, but made sure Yunho heard the question. The boy swallowed before shaking his head slowly.

Seonghwa switched tactics. “San, what’s all this about the ravine? He looked down into it and then—”

“—he just dropped and started seizing. Like he’d been struck,” San elaborated as much as he could between whimpers, still unable to get ahold of himself. Mingi had turned the tables and grabbed San’s arms, trying to rub sense into him. “That sounds like—”

“Dark magic.” Jongho was very grave and there was not a trace of sarcasm in his usually humorous voice.

Mingi swallowed at the chill snaking down his spine. “What makes you say that?”

Jongho sighed at his own uncertainty. It seemed there was something in him that could pinpoint it. “I don’t know but it’s definitely dark magic.”

“There’s a difference between dark magic and... normal magic?” Again Wooyoung was clueless to the intricacies of sorcery and no one else was quite equipped to explain it to him.

“It’s just a feeling,” Jongho insisted. “I’ve been sensitive to these kind of supernatural things since the curse fell on me. Even though it’s been lifted, there’s still a connection of some kind. I get a feeling that something is off.”

Apparently Hongjoong got a feeling too, as he finally spoke up with “Let’s get out of here” and led the way back to their campsite. Jongho and Yeosang covered their tracks with broken branches to block the road, in case anyone else should wander off and lay eyes on the convulsion-inducing sight.

The atmosphere was significantly different then, and all the men went to bed without much more fuss and festivity. Wooyoung made sure to select a spot in the sleeping pile that was close to Yunho.

“I lied.”

The whisper sent a trickle of fear down Wooyoung’s spine, but he soundlessly flipped over to face the rigger when he finally spoke. “I do remember something.” Yunho whispered again, and in his eyes Wooyoung sensed fear that he had never seen on Yunho before.

“San. I went to look for him and I found him by the pit. He was just staring into it, completely senseless...” Wooyoung nodded for him to go on when the words got caught. “I turned to see what he was looking at when he didn’t respond and suddenly... suddenly this feeling... like being struck down and losing all control. It was petrifying, I felt completely helpless. Someone else controlled me for what felt like an eternity until my vision returned and there was everyone, staring at me like I’d just come back from the dead.”

“Jongho said it was dark magic,” Wooyoung whispered. “But what I don’t understand is how San was able to set his eyes on a cursed sight and not be affected, when you did the same and were, well, possessed by something.”

Yunho shivered at this. “A dark spirit of some kind? Did it kill all of the animals and wait there in the carcass pile for someone to stumble along?”

Wooyoung shook his head. He still didn’t really know anything about magic but even someone who denied its existence could feel in their bones that something was very wrong here. “At least it’s gone now, whatever it was. Are you sure you’re alright?”

Yunho opened his mouth to answer but hesitated, worrying at his lower lip for a moment. “I think so. Physically, I haven’t found anything wrong. I’m just so shaken up by it. There was a second there when I thought it was the end of me.”

Wooyoung didn’t have the words to tell him everything was alright, so he simply pulled the older boy into a hug and kept him there until they both fell asleep.

Morning came sooner than usual, but it wasn’t the time that confused the officers as they arose but the colour. Wooyoung detangled from Yunho and rubbed his eyes. “Is the sun... supposed to be blue?”

“Impossible! The sun is the sun, no matter which island you see it from,” Yeosang was half-hearted in his logic, submitting that this island really did defy every law of nature. “Something is really wrong here.”

“I think I prefer the sun to be yellow,” Mingi whined as he threw on his jacket. “The blue makes the island grow dark and cold.”

“I think we have a bigger problem!” Jongho’s voice rang out from where he stood looking at the trees. It took some adjusting to be able to see what he was referring to in the blue tinted light but soon their eyes trained on infected foliage radiating out from their campsite.

“It wasn’t like that before,” Yunho had taken a few steps back. They hadn’t been bothered by spirits in the night but it looked as if they had still been here. Reason after reason to prove they weren’t safe on this paradise island anymore. The trouble was that no one knew why.

Seonghwa realised Hongjoong wasn’t laying next to him like normal and panicked for a moment before locating him seated at the tree line, stretching and rubbing his neck. He sighed and rose to join him. “You didn’t sleep.”

There was no use denying it, so Hongjoong simply nodded. “I was keeping watch.”

Seonghwa looked into the forest, dark spaces shadowed in a chilling blue glow, and glanced back at the ship, anchored at a safe distance and now fully repaired. It suddenly struck him.

“There is no predator here. We brought it ourselves. Something magical is tampering with us, and not just any kind of magic. Jongho is right, this must be dark magic.”

It didn’t quite explain why their sails were suddenly destroyed and other strange things were happening, but it seemed to Seonghwa that the good phenomena of this land had been overcome by an unidentifiable source on their arrival, one that poisoned the place and created bad phenomena. He pulled Hongjoong up from the ground and back to the stirring sleeping pile, continuing on. “The problem is once we leave, we can’t guarantee things will stop happening. Until we locate the source, we’ll be bringing the dark magic everywhere with us.”

He was sending the captain a pointed look through his platinum bangs that bordered accusation. Hongjoong yanked his arm out of his grasp. “No, don’t look at me! The crystal was destroyed and that was the end of it. It’s something else causing this.” All the other officers’ heads turned at this.

Seonghwa didn’t have a chance to respond before San appeared before the two, asking for permission to head into the forest in a roundabout way. “Hyungs, you’re not planning to leave yet, are you? We haven’t explored the eastern face of the island yet.”

Yeosang scoffed from where he was starting the breakfast fire. “In order to, we’d have to cross the forest we just blocked off last night. I don’t want to risk encountering evil spirits.”

San turned to him with a pout. “Why don’t we take another way?”

“Like what? The hill? It took us all day yesterday. I say we leave like we intended to in the first place. We’re in more than we bargained for.”

“I agree with Yeosang,” Yunho immediately put in. Jongho and Mingi were already packing their things. “Me too.” “And me!”

“If Yunho isn’t comfortable staying after the events of last night,” Wooyoung waited for Yunho’s nod for confirm. “Then I’m not comfortable staying either.”

Seonghwa and Hongjoong simply looked at each other before the captain turned to the imploring surgeon. “You’ve been outvoted San. Sorry.”

San obediently went to pack his things with a hanging head and Wooyoung left Yunho’s side to do a bit of investigating. “Don’t you think it’s dangerous to stay longer?”

San didn’t look up from where he was forcefully shoving an extra pair of boots into his bag. “No, we can handle it. Yunho just got spooked is all.”

Wooyoung sat down next to him and tried to make eye contact. “But it’s not just the incident last night.” If San was listening, he didn’t show it. “It’s the whole island. It’s turning on us. Even the blue sun is a clear warning we should leave. How do you expect to see the rest of the island in a blue light anyway? And what if it rains red this time, or worse?”

San continued to ignore him, and the feeling in Wooyoung’s gut prevailed that something was very wrong, not just with the island but with San. He thought back to what he had overheard about a potential magical artefact being the cause of this mystical deterioration of the island and his stomach jumped.

“Oh, San. Tell me it’s not you.”

“Very well, it’s not me.” The sarcastic comment was accompanied by a glare.

“San, one of us brought something here that’s causing this.” Wooyoung continued to be ignored, and wondered if he was jumping to conclusions. Where would San have picked up a magical artefact between the North and here?

Frustrated, he went to gather his own things and check that his gun teams were ready to head back as well. It was almost solemn as the half dozen boats set out for the ATEEZ, leaving behind the dying embers of their campfire, the sparkling stream by the cliffside, the colourful fields of dye plants, and a mysterious ravine full of carcasses of all the animals on the entire island.

It was now a tainted paradise, and Wooyoung could only pray the misfortune didn’t follow them on their journey back west.

Chapter 1 - Dazzlingly Light

A villain one day appears almost as if from a comic book with a ridiculous overpowered ability and Hongjoong just can’t stand losing to him, while Seonghwa finds it cute that he’s even trying to fight back. Yunho wants nothing to do with his villainous childhood friend no matter how soft he is for him, while all Yeosang wants is to find his own. Wooyoung is over his childhood already and San wishes he could be over it when he see the same pain he went through on Jongho’s face.

Yunho knew from a very young age he had powers. He was never sure what exactly they were. The best way to label him was maybe as a psych, but he couldn’t predict the future or read your palm, a psych in the sense that he could see what other people couldn’t.

As a kid he would always draw people with a swirl of color surrounding them and the adults would every time act like it was a work of art until someone asked him what were those representing and his younger self was astounded when no one seemed to really understand his response.

He got more vocal about the lights surrounding people when he realised it something that everybody else was seeing. Although worrying the kindergarten teachers the little boy only wanted some validation, maybe he was just explaining it wrong or maybe he was special. The adults would play along, but he could feel the underlying falseness of their words and the worry surrounding him, overwhelming his senses as if he was doing something wrong to them.

Eventually he stopped saying anything and they shrugged it off as kids play. The dazzlingly lights never disappeared, constantly surrounding each and every person sparkling in his vision like sequins in the sunlight popping their rainbow colors everywhere, but the odd bitter taste in his mouth and the concerned looks did go away and that was enough for the child to not let out a single word on the matter again.

Flash forward a few years on, in elementary school. He sees a boy on the corner of the playground by himself and he didn’t even need to check his aura to feel his sadness radiating from a mile away. Being the energetic social butterfly he always was, he approached the kid to play with him and they quickly became friends.

They kept playing together everyday, the other kid didn’t seem to have any other friends nor did he seemed interested to, just happy to play with little Yunho. One day, before they were leaving to go home together a teacher asked him, “Yunho, did you have a fight with the other kids?”

“No, why?” He was confused, he would feel it if the other kids had bad feelings about him, wouldn’t he?

“We were just wondering why have you been playing alone this week, is everything okay? Is there a reason why you’re not playing with everyone?” the lady asked concerned.

“I wasn’t alone I was just playing with my new friend.” Wasn’t it obvious?

“Ah, maybe he’s in that phase where kids start having imaginary friends?” The teacher’s assistant whispered to the older lady that now looked confused. Yunho heard all she said and was getting impatient with them. How could they not see his friend when he was standing right beside him.

“Yunho, sweetie, what is the name of your new friend?” she asked, crouching down to be on eye level with her young student.

“Mingi.” Yunho answered looking at the other boy besides him. The other kept quiet.

He felt like he said something wrong, because the sudden cold and heavy feeling that surround his every sense knocked the air out of him. His teachers’ faces fell in shock, his pressure dropping with it and he just ran from there pulling his new friend with him not knowing what was the problem.

The more he ran the more frustrated he got, he didn’t do anything wrong so why did they reacted like this. Why were they acting like his friend didn’t exist and why were they so scared at his answered. They were meanies that didn’t wanna play with his new friend like everyone else, he thought. Why everyone avoided him? Didn’t they see how fun he was like Yunho did?

“Yunho! Yunho, wait.” His friend that was getting pulled by him called out, trying to get him to slow down.

The two came to a halt in a park, by the side of a river, and he could feel in his bones how Mingi was upset.

“I’m sorry” his friend kept repeating looking like he wanted to cry.

“Why?” It just frustrated Yunho even more that the other felt he had done something wrong, because he didn’t. It didn’t make sense.

“The teachers don’t like me, because they can’t find me.” And as Mingi said that he pointed towards the river and then it made sense. Because at that moment he too did not see Mingi. The only one he saw reflected on the water was himself.

Yunho took that fact in as any young kid would and immediately just ran from there. The next day at school he tried not to look at Mingi. Recess would come up and for a few days he did not want to go outside. He went back to playing with everyone and avoid his former friend like the plague.

He hated how sad the other felt. He hated how he could feel it all around the room and he hated how it was his fault. No one seemed to notice any difference and he hated that too. The year ended, they switched classes and then he didn’t feel it anymore. He could pretend that it never happened like everyone else seemed to.

He learned to keep his mouth shut about whatever he saw and felt, that’s why he would always surprise himself with new aspects to his powers whenever he would say something that suddenly was met with confusion. Many things that he considered normal growing up where not and he often pondered how different other people saw the world compared to him.

Feelings were one of those things that surprised him. He was already ending middle school when he found out maybe people didn’t perceive them like he did as he expressed his concern for the school’s cheerleader captain that one day came into their classroom.

She was only there a few minutes for an announcement of a event of some sorts and was much older than them, she wasn’t anyone that Yunho ever interacted with, but he felt such overwhelming sadness about her. He could feel it cold and thick in the air and it suffocated him, his eyes watering as as he put on a coat in the middle of the summer.

He leaned down to comment about it with one his friends sitting besides him, but the only response he got was “What do you mean? She looks fine to me, too happy even. Isn’t her smile kinda creepy? I don’t think I ever saw her not smiling actually.” Yunho let it go after that, confused at what was that he was feeling. Her aura didn’t look great, with dark mute tones to it, but he knew better than to argue that.

The girl killed herself a week later. Yunho didn’t know how to feel about it when he heard the news. After a few more mismatched situations he connected the dots that being an empath was part of his powers.

He could see in himself how that affected him, now that he was self aware. Could see how his need to please and cheer people up was developed as a form of immediate self gratification, feeling good as they felt happy and his avoidance of serious atmospheres were all in self preservation, hating the bad feeling everyone gave when the mood soured and he felt helpless to it. It was hard not to be shaped by other people’s emotions when they were so strong, he supposed.

At the start of high school he thought he had cleared up all he could do. He tried his best to center himself and not be swayed by the things he saw and felt. He became a pro in pretending he was seeing the world the same as everyone else. He just wanted to be normal. That was what every teenager seemed to want anyway, so he went along trying to not get singled out.

One day he was eating with his friends at the cafeteria when a guy almost as tall as him passed by and grabbed an apple from the tray the girl besides him had in front of her.

“Hey! That has an owner, you know.” He let out annoyed at the blatant disregard from the guy, making him stop in his tracks looking back genuinely surprised.

“Wha-, you scared me! Who are you yelling at?” The girl besides him exclaimed as surprised, looking up from her phone.

“Didn’t you see him just grab your apple?” Yunho asked confused.

“Ah, someone grabbed it? Oh my God, did you see who? That’s so rude, I paid for it!” The girl besides him start going on a rant to him, turning her head to look around but ignoring the perpetrator that was right in front of her somehow. He didn’t understand how she didn’t see the boy when he towered over their table like a giant tree in front of them.

“What do you mean who, he’s right h-” Yunho stopped himself as he saw the cocky smile on his face and combined with the overwhelming confusion from his friend he finally got that this was one of those things that he couldn’t just explain.

The boy took a bit of the apple right there in front of him, looking down on them as if it was a challenge and that for whatever reason that made Yunho blood boil. He doesn’t even remember it that well anymore. He might have been having a bad day or he just never dealt well with cocky people from the beginning.

The feeling that arrogance itself passed to Yunho always felt like such an intense personal provocation, to feel it from someone else even when he had nothing to do with the situation, he regularly had trouble staying away from the emotion although he knew he should ignore and move on. The cockiness frustrated him, how it was like he was getting taunted into a game that in the end he could only lose. People that thought they had the upper hand usually were right, that was just how life worked and that pissed him off.

He thought he was past that childish indignation by then but either way, Yunho just gave in to the impulse, got up and pulled on the boy’s forearm holding it as he tried to grab the apple from his other hand quick enough that he didn’t need to explain any of this to his distracted friends.

“Hey! Is that the guy that got my apple?” The girl suddenly could see him, as well as all their friends apparently, as they stood up to help Yunho that were still struggling to hold the other’s arms while he standed awkwardly in-between the table and the bench.

That surprised Yunho into letting him go and he could hear a bunch of surprised gasps and exclamations asking where did the boy disappear to. They couldn’t see him anymore even though he was still there just a few steps back then before, looking around shocked. Yunho was equally shocked. The boy in question took the chance to run off.

So the boy did exist. He wasn’t a ghost that only Yunho could see. His mind raced as the bell rang with his group pulling him away to class, commenting on how weird that all just was.

Yunho had always concluded he could see ghosts. That was the conclusion he got from his ‘imaginary friend’ incident years ago. And until then he had never thought back on it again. He made that conclusion but never tested it, afraid of what he could find. He also remembered about seeing ghosts as part of his repertoire, but he never really gave the kid that brought him to such misguided conclusion a second thought.

In the years between kindergarten and high school he never saw anything like it again. Although You’d expect him to be especially sensitive to the supernatural from his powers, everything he saw and felt was very humane and alive.

People die everyday with unfinished businesses, surely if he saw actual ghosts it would be more frequent than this. His friends had see him, even if for only a brief moment, so it wasn’t like he didn’t exist. He had to be alive. Why Yunho’s touch made him visible?

The only two incidents like this were about two boys around his age. What were the chances that it was the same boy? What were the chances that it were different boys? Both made equal sense, which was none at all, and it left him wondering for years until he got an answer.

Yunho discovered the possible answer to his years of doubt as he finally understood the last characteristic of his power. It wasn’t an instant epiphany, but a whole process. Up until then he was working under the assumption that he was the only one with powers. He was the one that was different, the odd one out of the bunch.

He knew about people that claimed they could read the future or see your past life from the media and sometimes he wondered if he was someone like that, since auras and empathic feelings were occasionally mentioned. However he didn’t have any cool party trick up his sleeve to show for it, he couldn’t tell you anything beyond of what people were feeling right at that moment and people tend to already figure that out on their own.

He felt alone in his struggle. He moved to Seoul for college and living in a bigger city was making things way harder than ever before. It wasn’t sufficient that he had to live choking among the crowd of other people’s emotions assaulting his every sense, he also had to act like it didn’t affect him at all.

A few months into his first semester the first big “villain” incident happened though. It wasn’t the first time they attacked, but it was the first time that the media and government acknowledged it and Yunho had been there to witness it happen.

He was on the train making his way back to his tiny apartment in the outskirts of town. The rent was cheap and he got the privacy he needed, but it was far, really really far and the several long train rides he went through to get there from classes or his part time job was quick to take a toll on him.

Being trapped with so many people for so long was exhausting for him. In the morning people felt for the news they saw before going out and at night everyone was adding up to his end of the day exhaustion with their own. Most of his classes were in the very early morning or a little into the early evening, like the one he had been coming back from that night. When the train stopped in its tracks with a halt Yunho barely reacted, sighing with the sudden worry from everyone around dawning over him.

It wasn’t completely crowded, every seat was taken but only a few people were standing. He pulled his backpack to his chest in case they needed to come out and closed his eyes in hope that next time he opened them again they would be moving again. Suddenly a huge metallic impact noise was heard though, and he was sure they wouldn’t.

He felt the rush of fear before he heard the screams. He was in the very end of the train and the situation took its time to reach the passengers there, but once it did it only escalated as he saw people panic and he made his escape towards the tiny bathroom there at the very end of the wagon with a few others lucky enough to fit in with him.

At first everyone thought it was a simple robbery, and maybe if they waited it out no one would notice the hiding spot. Yunho soon noticed it wasn’t the case as he saw something he had never seen before approaching.

Even through the wall separating him from the rest of the boxed space he could see a strong golden aura that shone so strong it hurt his eyes and he felt like he had to be wearing sunglasses to see it properly.

He then heard that voice. It told everyone to stop and the people around him suddenly weren’t trembling in fear anymore, their eyes frozen in place and Yunho held his breath knowing something bad was coming from this.

“Everyone inside the bathroom come out.” It commanded. And they did it in a calm and orderly fashion that felt ridiculous compared to moments before when they were all scrambling to fit in there.

Yunho didn’t come out. He later would say it was a strategically thought out move to stay hidden, but honestly he was just scared. Something was wrong with everyone, and it was obvious it wasn’t affecting him. He didn’t wanna find out what would happen if he got caught.

He heard the footsteps as the aura he saw started distancing itself from his hiding spot and he finally let out the breath he was holding. The door was wide open and he could see everyone with their backs turned to him, a lot more people there than before everything happened. He grabbed the door to make a shield as he peeked from there, they didn’t move an inch staring at the path the golden person had come from.

He had the luck to notice someone he knew. Well, he didn’t know the man, but he saw him before. Kim Hongjoong was in at least three of his classes and always seemed to take the lead in most heated debates in them so it was hard not to notice him.

The short man was staring zombie like as everyone else, but his aura was weakly swaying. Yunho took that as a chance and tried holding his wrist to pull him his way. The moment their skin touched though it seemed like Hongjoong immediately woke up from whatever spell was cast on him. He looked around confused and Yunho silently pulled him forward with a finger lifted to his lips.

They stayed there until everything was over which took roughly an hour but felt like an eternity. They kept silent waiting for something, monitoring the noises, but the man didn’t come back their way. After a while their door was forced open and the two of them almost had a heart attack, Yunho falling downwards cowering behind his tiny companion, but it was only the police informing them to evacuate the train.

They were separated to take statements. Yunho didn’t have much to say. That didn’t stop him from getting held up till dawn in the midst of the whole thing though. He sent his request to live in the college dorm as soon as he got home.

The other day Hongjoong sought him out, still looking pretty shook from the events, a bit jumpy and fidgeting, a stark comparison to his usual confident exterior.

“What did you do yesterday?” he asked Yunho with a serious look on his face, foregoing any greeting.

“What?”

“You made it stop.” He said as if it that would make Yunho understand, but it didn’t.

The older man seemed displeased with the confusion he got as an answer walking away before Yunho could say anything. The feeling he gave off was one Yunho didn’t like feeling. It was frustration, but the type that came off insecurity. The feeling of helplessness left a bad taste in his mouth. He hoped it wouldn’t become a trauma for the other.

Yunho couldn’t imagine the type of person that would have that type of aura until he saw them on tv later that day. There was footage of the inside of the train when it all happened. The golden person was a man not much older than himself, wearing a long black coat with red detailing and a red mask, he was followed by a tall man dressed in a similar fashion. The second guy in contrast had no aura whatsoever and Yunho gawked at that.

They showed how everyone went towards the end of the train in a synchronised way reminding him of a more casual version of marching soldiers and how the two invaders kept walking around the front wagons going through people’s purses.

The footage had no audio and was cut in small pieces as it didn’t show the part the golden person went through to the end of the train. It felt like important pieces were missing as they didn’t seem to be finding what they wanted, not seeming to take anything, but what really took his attention was the news anchor words when he reported about the perpetrators. ‘he appeared to be working alone...’

That second guy’s presence was painfully obvious for him. No aura, not being seen… It kept happening to Yunho. He again wondered if there was any chance that it was the same person.

It took a few more incidents with that same person piled up for Yunho to start to understand the full implications of his powers since the information was never very accurate, lots of he says she says and probably some form of censor considering how serious the police was taking it. They tried to downplay everything but it was obvious it was a huge issue.

One day the golden person came onto the news himself. He appeared in a bright red suit, a bright red mask matching and Yunho couldn’t help laugh at the flashy tackiness of it. The man ordered the anchor off his seat and replaced him, his companion there as well sitting on the counter by the side of the screen.

“Every adult that is watching this right now in *** area will head to the park in front of *** station immediately. If you have kids at home put them to bed before you leave.” The man finished with a smirk.

He couldn’t be serious, Yunho thought. Yet the memories of the train came to him, how he ordered people like that as well. The tone of his voice, it made Yunho feel light.

Yunho lived in the area he mentioned and couldn’t stop himself from think maybe going to the park right now sounded good. Even though it was way too late to be in a park in such a shady area, he felt compelled to do it. He didn’t though. He wondered if people were indeed being brainwashed to do it. Yunho felt glad for being different for the first time in his life.

He thought back to Hongjoong in the train. He wasn’t different, he didn’t have a way to escape it, if this guy really was controlling people. Which should be impossible, but technically his own powers should be impossible as well.

Hongjoong was in the same train as his that time. It was the last train he took, which maybe meant he lived around the same area? It was a longshot, but there wasn’t much else to do around there. Would he be going to the park right now? There were a lot of people that would be going if this man’s power worked over the screen, could he even find Hongjoong in the crowd if that was the case?

He wasn’t gonna go out there just because he was worried about this random guy he doesn’t even know that well, would he?

Turns out he would. Hongjoong’s aura and emotional the day following the first incident was enough to push Yunho over the edge with worry. And luck must be part of his powers because he found Hongjoong ridiculously easy. Lots of people were indeed going to the park and when Yunho got to the entrance he spot the person he was looking for right away only a few meters away, walking that weird march everyone else seemed to be doing.

Yunho remembered Hongjoong as the poster boy for fashion majors, his hair a show stopper and always well dressed, but now he only wore sweatpants and a oversized shirt making Yunho think that he really was forced come here rather than planned to go out. When he touched his shoulder he had a reaction similar to the last time, looking around frantically and confused as if he just woke up from a dream.

“You!” he exclaimed seeing Yunho holding onto him.

“Yeah, me, I can’t explain right now, but we gotta get out here.” The taller answered hoping they could leave the eerie zombie crowd before he had to answer any questions. He really didn’t think through the aftermatch of his actions, his intended plan only going up to that action of waking him up.

“Why? What is happening? How aren’t you affected by him?” The questions spilled from the other’s lips a bit too fast for Yunho to keep up, laced with suspicion.

“Look, I know as much as you do okay and I don’t really wanna stay to see what happens, so how about we get out of here first and talk later.” He hoped that was enough to convince him, a bad presentiment at the back of his head.

The other seemed reluctant, but they went back towards the entrance again. Yunho stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the bright red suit standing directly in their way, Hongjoong bumping into his back.

“What?” The shorter asked.

“Nothing, let’s just leave through the other side.” Yunho tried sounding nonchalant about it, in contrast to the panic he truly was feeling. He didn’t have time to explain this now when they were in immediate danger. All he could do was pull the other another way and hope he followed, but of course Hongjoong didn’t make things easy.

“Why, the entrance is right there.” He had now stopped. “What did you see there?” Hongjoong tried looking back and going the opposite way Yunho was pushing them towards.

Honestly saving this tiny man’s stubborn ass was presenting much more trouble than he originally expected, and he wasn’t sure it was worth the effort. The last thing he wanted was to stop and catch up with his supposed childhood imaginary friend right now.

“Ugh, just… Trust me okay, I’ll tell everything after I swear.” Yunho tried to express how desperate he was with his eyes.

“You better tell me everything later.” The other reluctantly agreed and stopped resisting to being pulled forward again. Yunho looked over his shoulder. The tall man seemed to have noticed them and was walking their way. He did look a bit familiar, but Yunho doubt that would save them if they were caught, even if they really did meet before.

“We gotta get out of here now. ” Yunho started full on sprinting, Hongjoong following his pace without protest this time.

They ran for what felt like ages that night until they got to the other side. It managed to exhaust Hongjoong enough for him to let Yunho off the hook till the next day. They both worried overnight about what was happening in that park, but it turns out it wasn’t anything as serious as they expected.

It was a demonstration of power. Everyone there was ordered to take a picture of the golden person and post it online with the caption “You can’t escape the Cardinal”. The Cardinal, seemed to be name the public enemy was going by right now, like a villain out of a comic book. Yunho wondered what was the story with the name, but he guessed he would find out soon enough if the guy was campaigning his evil deeds on the internet.

His musings were interrupted as Hongjoong entered the coffee shop they arranged to meet at, being introduced by the little bell at the door ringing. He made a beeline toward his table, not stopping to order anything and Yunho already felt tired just by feeling his determination. He was hoping this didn’t turn into a full on interrogation, but his situation wasn’t looking good.

“Start speaking.” He said sitting down.

“Not even a hello or anything?” The younger tried.

“Oh where are my manners, hello, how are you, I’m fine thank you. Now talk.” He had the nerve to roll his eyes just to frustrate him more.

A waitress came by to see if Hongjoong wanted anything to drink and Yunho took the chance to gather his thoughts. He was preparing his excuses all morning training answers to any questions he could come up with, but being put on the spot to explain himself like this wasn’t what he was expecting.

The other must have noticed his sour expression because once they were left alone he started apologizing with a sigh.

“Sorry, I’ve just been having a bad day.” And didn’t Yunho know that, he again had that heavy insecure feeling around him in every class they met and sometimes Yunho swore he could feel it from several classrooms away. “Just tell me what you know about the Cardinal, please.” His eyes and tone now pleading rather than demanding.

“I don’t know anything about that dude, only what I see on the news, in fact I’m sure you must know more than me since you saw him in person and I didn’t.” And that was true. The only new information he had was about his little sidekick help, that wasn’t really little at all, but Yunho decided to leave that out. “What happened that time anyway?”

“I thought I was the one getting answers here.” Hongjoong pouted at that, but continued to answer anyway. “He just barged in and we got told to move to the end of the train, I think he was looking for something, but my mind went blank when spoke. Like blank as if I got a full body anesthesia blank. I only came to when you pulled me to hide with you. I heard other people didn’t till the cops showed up. Like a full hour got robbed of them, how can you not notice that. And then last night again.” He finished looking down.

Yunho could tell what type of person Hongjoong was from those few times they meet alone. He brimmed with fire and determination, that was usually his default mode and when something negative happened that he had no control over, he would get frustrated at his own helplessness as if he himself was in the wrong for not stopping it from happening.

There was more depth to a human being than this, but he felt those two recurring emotions already spoke great deals of who Kim Hongjoong was.

“I don’t really know anything, I was just a guy that was hiding in the bathroom.” Yunho started trying to clear his side. “I went to the park thinking maybe you’d be in trouble. Cuz, you know, we were in the same train and stuff… So like, I assumed… maybe you lived around there?” It sounded dumb and he wished he’d thought before he spoke, now it sounded like he either had a crush or was a creepy stalker when he honestly didn’t even really know the guy. Yay. Go Yunho. “Look, I just felt bad not doing anything when I saw the news and thought of the people in the train, so I went there to help in any tiny safe way I could.”

“There’s not many convenient trains at that hour that would get there fast enough, you must live close, right?” He kept his interrogation going, thankfully ignoring Yunho’s embarrassing words, but Yunho knew what he was implying.

“Yeah, I live a few blocks away from the station.” He didn’t know how to avoid this train of thought. It was impossible to ignore it.

“You came there out of your own free will.” It wasn’t a question.

“Yes” Yunho answered anyway. He already had made his mind the former night while he couldn’t sleep. If he couldn’t think of an excuse he might as well own up to it.

“How?” Hongjoong eyes squinted at him in suspicion, as if that made Yunho a threat like the golden guy. The Cardinal. Yunho was still having trouble with the lame new name.

The defensive stare piercing through him hurt, but it wasn’t wrong of Hongjoong to be careful, he told himself. In fact the best thing you could be with everything unexplainable in life was to be cautious, right. He was the weird one, he couldn’t complain. He just wanted to get this over with and go back to his normal life, where all this serious heavy feelings had no place to weight down on him and he wasn’t reminded that he was an abnormality.

“Just I’m not really what you’d call normal and it paid off against this guy, I guess.” He started saying, but didn’t know how to continue to describe his situation to other people without seeming crazy. He never had to put anything related to his power into words before.

“What do you mean not normal?” Hongjoong pressed and Yunho’s face scrunched in thought.

The words that came to his mind felt wrong. He didn’t get affected because he saw his aura? That didn’t feel right. Why didn’t he get affected? Because he was different. Then why his touch also made Hongjoong wake up from it? He wasn’t different. Yunho didn’t do anything.

The incident with the invisible boy in high school came to his mind suddenly. His touch made him visible. His touch made The Cardinal’s command stop working. He always felt alone in his struggles with his powers, so he never considered other people having them. Now it made sense, he could stop other powers. That’s why he saw that boy, because his power didn’t work on him.

So it should be the same boy, right? How many invisible boys were there running around in the world? He moved to a different and bigger city now though, so maybe there were many that he wasn’t aware of.

“Yunho?” the man in front of him called him back to earth, before he got too lost in his own head.

“You saw The Cardinal, right? How he commanded people with his voice, you felt that.” Yunho started again, finally settling on an approach to explain himself.

“Yes.” The other responded him seriously.

“So you believe me when I say he has some type of power. I mean, you know, like a superpower from a comic book, something that a superhero would have.” His thoughts left his mouth like scrambled words as soon as he said the word ‘power’ out loud. It just felt silly to say that, much more to elaborate on it even after the notion lived in his head for so long.

“More like a villain, but yes, I believe it.”

“I have one too. Something I can do is neutralize other powers. That’s why his doesn’t affect me.” Yunho finally said with his eyes cast down, scared of the reaction he would get. He was half ready to turn it into a joke if the other didn’t believe him, a recurring coping mechanism for him already at the tip of his tongue, but deep inside he knew it’d hurt even he saved himself the embarrassment.

“Something you can do? Is there more to it?” Hongjoong asked. Was that really the part the other wanted to focused on? Yunho cringed just thinking on what to answer, he wasn’t expecting to be believed so easy to start with.

“Yes, but that’s the only important part.” He said hoping the other wouldn’t push it.

To his surprise Hongjoong really didn’t push it. He hummed at his answer and grew quiet deep in thought sipping on his coffee that was already cold by then. It felt surreal to talk about this with someone else like this, specially the way the older was taking it.

“I get it. Then do you think you have the power to stop that guy?”

“What?” That question caught Yunho completely by surprise.

“You said you can neutralize powers, can’t you just touch that guy and make his powers stop working?” Hongjoong explained his thoughts as if that was the simplest possible answer to the problem that was The Cardinal.

“It’s not that simple, first of all I don’t think I can do it permanently, so I’d need to be touching him forever if you want him to never give out an order again. Also, how would I even approach him? Not to mention the people already under his control to start with.” Yunho started babbling the innumerable flaws with that thinking, really eager for a chance to steer away from the topic and not wanting to give the impression that he was powerful like that in any way.

“You don’t think?” the other raised an eyebrow at his choice of words, not impressed by his excuses.

“It’s not like there’s many powerful people around volunteering themselves for me to try to erase their powers. I’m not even sure how I really do it, it’s more of a passive skill.”

Hongjoong also didn’t seem impressed with the simplified explanation.

“I also don’t think he’s hard to approach, he works alone and acts all cocky. I’m sure we can surprise hi-” the older started, but Yunho quickly cut him off.

“We? Dude, I don’t know about you, but I want nothing to do with this.” He was the one scaring Yunho now.

“Look, right now you’re the only one that has any known form of counter to his power, don’t you feel like you need to do something? Controlling innocent people like puppets, doesn’t that disgust you even a little bit?” Hongjoong stared at him exasperated, but the fear in his words shone through by the end of his sentence.

And Yunho hadn’t thought about it like that yet. Wording it like that he understood the other’s fear and his latest mood swings. The fact that you could be controlled without any consent like this at any time on someone’s whim could really make anyone feel helpless.

Still he wouldn’t budge, not only he was scared as hell and adamant on maintaining the normal power-free life he worked so hard to upkeep till now, he was also sure they couldn’t get past the big guy to start with. Yunho wasn’t a fighter at all. He was at best a support character. And as a game expert he could say for sure the stupidest thing you could do was to go headfirst against the boss alone while playing support.

“It doesn’t matter anyway, I know for a fact that we can’t reach him.” he started, already expecting Hongjoong to start questioning him.

“And what makes you say that?” the vexed expression on Hongjoong’s face upset him the slightest bit, as if Yunho was the one being difficult.

“He has a second person working with him.” he let out finally.

“What? How do you even know that?” the other asked suspicion coming back to his tone.

“It’s obvious, but no one sees it. He has this invisible giant bodyguard working with him. Only I can see him because, like The Cardinal, his power doesn’t affect me.” he answered knowing how ridiculous it sounded, but a bit too tired to word it more convincingly.

Hongjoong looked at him for the first time like he was crazy. It almost felt satisfying to finally receive the reaction Yunho had been expecting the whole conversation. Almost, but not really. Just a way to cope with the pent up hurt of seeing things no one else saw.

But then Hongjoong’s eyes sparked with realisation.

“Yesterday, that was what you were seeing when you kept looking back? This guy was there?”

“Yeah, he noticed that we stopped and was coming to check. Seriously he’s as tall as I am and kinda intimidating, he scares me more than the Cardinal does for sure.” Yunho answered letting out a relieved sigh that the older was smart enough to connect the dots by himself.

“I kept seeing an empty space where you were looking behind us, I would never imagine we were being chased.”

“Yeah, can’t relate. So, can you just let go of this vigilante fantasy you’re thinking about and just try to stay out of this like any normal citizen? Cuz that’s what I’m gonna do.” he just wanted to escape this whole conversation at that point. The other’s aura that flaid with determination, the bright tones of red not only shone too brightly, they indicated that Hongjoong had no intent of backing down and he didn’t want to get caught up in it.

“Even if you say that is not like I have a choice whether I get controlled on not. And it can’t just keep happening. I don’t know what I can do, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”

“Yeah, tell me about it.” Yunho didn’t need to understand the feeling of being controlled to be able to literally taste the bitter feeling of utter defeat in his mouth from Hongjoong’s feelings. He pulled a napkin from the side and a pen out of his pocket and start writing something down.

“Here’s my number. If you get caught in something like this again try to call me before anything happens. I’d feel bad if you weren’t there anymore to yell about how my side of the debate team was wrong in every damn philosophy class we have. I gotta go already or else I’ll be late.” he joked, handing the paper ready to finally get out of the suffocating atmosphere.

“Okay.” Yunho was already getting up when Hongjoong grabbed his wrist for a second. "Thank you really.”

“Don’t mention it.” The grateful look he was receiving was not something he knew how to deal with. Not when he spent the whole time expecting to be shunned away. The whole proactive heroic streak on the other caught him by surprise, but he’d be lying if he wasn’t a least touched at how his power wasn’t meet with disgust.

After that the two of them unexpectedly became really good friends. It was obvious to Hongjoong that Yunho was a pretty great guy, offering his help when he really didn’t have to. And Hongjoong himself was pretty outgoing and popular among students, he was already on his second year and was always pretty vocal in and outside of class, so he knew most people in his own major at the very least compared to Yunho that was still getting a feel for the college life.

Soon one was inviting the other to parties, doing their class projects together and taking coffee breaks and library overnights alone was unthinkable now. Hongjoong followed suit on requesting for a place at the school dorms and entered the waiting list as Yunho had earlier.

They didn't get any updates till the next semester, but it gave them time to enjoy frequent train rides together and bonding over the problems they had with such a long commute and shady neighborhood. To their surprise, and Yunho’s recurring luck, they became roommates when they got accepted into the college dorms, and helped each other move during the break.

Since he started his first year he was having a hard time. Yunho was a very social guy, loved to party and hang out with friends as often as he could. He thrived when surrounded by good emotions, so he always did his best to incite the best of feelings on whoever he was around and avoided awkward and serious situation meticulously.

When he moved it got tough. Everything started piling up almost immediately, the school work, the part time job he got, the long commutes and the fact that he didn't know anyone nor felt like he had the time to try and have a social life. It was all suffocating his extroverted self that suddenly only had the negativity surrounding him to focus on.

However the events that lead to them getting closer, while borderline traumatic, started a chain of overall positive events for both them. Yunho mused if luck really was part of his power, something he considered often.

It was hard to prove luck though, so he could only wonder. It seemed that every time his life was starting to dip down into a low phase it suddenly did a one eighty with a seemingly random event causing everything to magically work out in his favor.

If it wasn't a superpower then at the very least fate had taken a liking to him and for that he was grateful.

The Cardinal's attack didn't stop, if anything they got even more frequent. The news was mostly filled with his big displays of power. It was very clear that his first focus was to affect public moral and he was succeeding.

His second order of business seemed to be to punish criminals that escaped their trials unscathed. He had the power to make them confess and their crimes were usually enough to make the people completely unsympathetic.

With that he started gaining a small following online, again planting the discourse of morality into modern society as they know. Was he a solution to the inefficient system that left those monsters free? Can you even consider a forced confession as a fact? Yunho was sure that it was as unconstitutional as it could get, but in his worse cases he could see the merit in his actions.

Hongjoong couldn't. The whole attitude of the vigilante sparked anger in him, so much that Yunho avoided watching the news with him in the room and stored painkillers for the headache he'd get from the intense emotional push.

The villain was building an reign based on fear and he hated everyone's attention on that. But Yunho could see past it most of the time. He had the feeling the news were censoring a big part of what he must be doing, with lots of cuts and edits over any footage. What was posted online was biased towards The Cardinal's grandiose acts, usually promoted by the man himself.

However you can't edit out what you don't even know is there. Yunho's eyes always followed the big guy running around these incidents. The camera never followed him so the focus always sucked, and most of the time he was mainly orbiting around The Cardinal himself and exits like a bodyguard watching over for any trouble.

So it stood out the times he was moving. He was always looking for something. Yunho never got a glimpse of what it was, but they had an end goal and it worried him how he was the only one seeing it.

Ikon- so ikon did a cover of pretty savage (blackpink) and I didn’t like it😀 like I was really wanting to like it and I watched it a couple of times but every time I just wasn’t feeling it... like the concept was cool (kinda didn’t get the point of the jungle idk) and the vocals n rap was there but like let’s be real, anytime Bobby raps it’s gonna be good😩 but like idk I just think the song choice wasn’t the right one idk? But I do think that them getting Lisa was a good choice in terms of promotion/views bc yk... black pink AGDKSH but yeah idk the choreography was really good at their dance break but in general I wasn’t feeling it too much idk...

Stray Kids- so stray kids did ddu du du ddu (blackpink) and gods menu (stray kids) AND PLEASE IT WAS SO GOOD😩😩😩 I think that was their best performance- actually no the ill be your man was the best bUT it’s up there. Here’s my first impressions (aka this is what 2020 is gonna sound like folks)

Alright so I’m really behind today, as some of you know I literally just got back from vacation and it’s also my first day of classes this semester and it’s just craziness. Yes I’m posting the first chapter of Yeosang’s spin-off today. But people seemed to like my first impressions of the last album so I’m going to do them again. Thankfully (?) this album is a lot shorter so I can pause and talk about stuff.

Warning! a loooong post, squealing, incoherent thoughts smashed together, and crying ahead. A lot of crying. Keysmashes included.

Post-MV thoughts before I listen to it again: There’s way too much to focus on and I’ve watched it many many times to look at the choreo and the storyline stuff that’s happening, but this is my first time listening without the video so I’ll notice more musically this time. But first I wanna say; YEOSANG’S LINES!!!! I’ve been screaming for forever that he has a beautiful deep voice and needs to be given parts that compliment it. And wow it finally happened :’) Anyway here we gooo

건배하자 like a thunder!! Can you believe they literally spoiled the entire hook of their next song in Beginning of the End? *flashbacks to my utter confusion when that happened* San sounds amazing and I like the little echoey thingies. Gives it a real nostalgic feel. Jongho already popping off vocally barely 10 seconds in. Mingi’s rap here and the transition to Hongjoong’s— rap line goals. The attitude in that mm-mm made me smile ngl. This prechorus might be my favourite part of the song. Seonghwa sounds heavenly. An EDM drop bringing back that hook, good decision and again it kinda feels nostalgic?? Especially the oh-oh-ohs which are also giving me a pirate drinking song vibe wow 0.0 Wooyoung with that 불러 불러 lol. Yes the Yeosang part!! I love a good post-chorus switchup and he. handled. it. perfectly. There’s even harmony, yall know how much I love harmony. And SINGING RAPPERS AHAHDJAHAK YESSSSS. Back to that glorious prechorus but it’s Yunho’s turn. This chorus is just such an anthem. I’m bopping rn. San in this bridge— he said I am a VOCALIST listen to my beautiful VOICE. Yay the rappers going back and forth again!! It’s like If Without You. Man I can’t believe I get to replay this song forever. 2020 is gonna be lit. You hit those notes Jongho! I’m always blown away by this kid, and that scoop earlier mmmm. Just nodding very energetically right now. Perfect end to the song. 100/10!!!!

Okay I’m pausing before the next one starts because no I am not prepared. It’s just like last time; I know Hongjoong wrote this and I know it’s gonna ruin me but I have no idea how and when and what it’s even gonna be like but anyway, too bad, let’s just go.

Oh kinda futuristic sounding opening with the synths? Yooo the vocal thingy in the background, sounds like a sample of some kind, that is super cool and I hope we get more of it. Ok I paused just to write that, let me unpause. This is gonna be a long one, I can already tell, sorry guys 😅 And the beat changed right before the vocalists came in. definitely a back and forth thing here in two registers, very sweet. Wow. WOW MINGI WOW. This rap is?? It sounds super mature and idk just full of confidence. I’m shook. Ok the chorus. Holy cow this is LIT lit. Nope nope I need to pause and go back. This is so chaotic, I feel like I’m missing things?? I’m listening to that chorus again because there were so many elements there. I just wanna take this song and break it down second by second to hear every single sound hahahah. I’m only catching an odd word or two here as far as lyrics go. Oml harmonies 💆🏻‍♀️ Alright Hongjoong’s rap. OMG if he sounded sassy in Answer this is a whole new level and I LOVE IT. Flow is 100/10. The “are you gonna take me there” gives me chills. This song needs a dance this chorus is TOO LIT. Am I at a rave rn??? Oh thank God the bridge took it back a level. Ok I’m pausing because I think I caught some of the lyrics this time. If I’m not wrong I heard 난 궁금해 저 끝이 궁금해, 더 가까이 조금 더 가까이 ? Which is something like “I wonder, I wonder about the end. Closer, a little bit closer” if I heard correctly. I need to look up the lyrics in full later because Hongjoong has a big brain and his lyrics are always 🤯🤩 Ok unpause. Final breakdown! Yep this is going on repeat the rest of today. Jongho yussss with the ad libs. No it’s over ㅠㅠ Alright this one is already vying for top spot this album. We shall see. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. HONGJOONG GENIUS.

Um so yeah I saw them perform this live for their anniversary thingy and cried so this should be fun. At least I already know the song so how much can it hurt me? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Smart of whoever put this album together to stick this song right in the middle and make us cry between head banging to the other songs. Mingi in the beginning is just 💖💕💘💝💓 San ballad king. I need more ballads from him. Jongho, of course, with perfect vocal control. Oh Seonghwa too, I need more ballads from him. Wooyoung with T H A T part. A tear is forming, I just love this chorus. People are saying the song should be in a drama and I 100% agree. Everyone together FOREVER YOU ARE MY STARRR. The little drum frills it’s so cute :(( Yay Hongjoong, and his cute little voice I’m UWUWU. Wooyoung with the high note and I’m ascending........... Chorus again and this is the real meaning of crying in the club. It just occurred to me that the second verse seemed really short. Yeosang + Hongjoong + that guitar in the bridge is *chef’s kiss*. This is so emotional, do we really need to do this at 4am?!? I’m just gonna vibe for a sec, it’s the last chorus. The ad libs were so perfect and the way it ended— wow. I need a moment.

From my understanding this is a full version of the Precious Overture they gave us last album. Tempted to go back and see my first impressions about that one, but either way i have a distinct feeling my wig is about to be snatched. Let’s GOOO

So far, it’s starting the same. Creepy humming and all. Okay scratch that, we have a vocal melody. Yunho sounds great ugh I’m so proud. Sorry, San’s voice just takes me to another plane of existence or something, how can it be that smooth and gorgeous, someone please explain. Building to something now... Oo. OO?! Hongjoong’s rapping. This is so cool oh wow, and into this vocal part which I believe is the chorus?? wOW wow it’s amazing to hear this having already heard the bgm, this is like a new level of appreciation. It really all goes well. Ah we have a switch up now with Seonghwa. guys GUYS GUYS you know how I feel about switch ups. Sorry I’m going back to catch something. The tempo changed here and really grabbed my attention. The bass is also super cool, it’s actually the same melody as the treasure opening (and the opening of this song) but much lower, I believe. Uh oh guys this might be vying for top spot too. Let’s continue. Ok Mingi’s rap which I’ve already heard. Um I’m confused now. It’s Hongjoong’s rap again? Is this the chorus?? Woah woah hold on I gotta pause. Because. Wait, what?? This is the chorus??!? Yoooooooo bold move! I have no idea what is going on but I love it. Continuing on. Ah yeah ok the vocal part with Yeosang again, so I guess the rap + vocal part is the chorus? Also I neglected to mention but Yeosang is killing this song. Ooh okay this bridge is building some suspense. Feeeelingggggg.... And now a shouted version of the rap for the final chorus. Okay wow I’m impressed that they took it this direction. And Jongho with the ad libs is PERFECTIONNNN. Oop okay they’ve added the revised-lyric Treasure part to the end here. And the lyrics are the same as in Precious (Overture) so I’m guessing we still didn’t find the treasure, good grief. How long is it gonna take to find this treasure 😅. And it ended like that. Well. WOW. Again, I could listen to this on repeat all day. Again, I am deceased. Instant fave.

I’m pretty sure this is the exact same as I already heard on the trailer thingy but we are gonna react to it anyway.

The orchestra really loosens my tear ducts like nothing else. It’s beautiful, who else is doing it like them?? “Did you find your treasure?” Yes, I found ATEEZ 🥺. The way he says “finally found it” . This is Maddox btw. Also about Maddox, hang on I’m gonna pause for a PSA: guys if you don’t know Maddox please PLEASE check him out. He’s doing the amazing narration on this (and Intro too), he’s a soloist under KQ and one of Ateez’s hyungs who they look up to. In addition to his superior narrating talents, he is also an amazing vocalist. If you like R&B and lo-fi music I would definitely recommend him, he just dropped a single called Color Blind, his insta is xxmaddox, he’s a great guy and YEAH that’s all for my plug but go stan him, he is deserving and proof of the fact that KQ artists are talent through and through. Unpausing! The way the orchestra swells and then goes into a piratey sounding theme is so motivating and familiar :))) “Can you hear those voices?” HNGJRKSNDN WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE SCARY. This is the Epilogue, it’s supposed to be like the denouement, the falling action!! The bad guys should be gone now! What’s next?? Treasure Ep: Answer to Question? Because that’s what I have after this album! More questions!!! Anyway, the bass here and the humming 👌🏻 100/10 for the instrumental. And in ATEEZ fashion, they leave me thirsting for more.

So that was my first impression/live reaction to the mini album! I think it’s Horizon and Precious fighting for #1 currently. Maybe I’ll reblog with second and third and fourth impressions... Here’s my first impressions.

The transition into this was spectacular. The marching just became the beat wooooah! HONGJOONG AHJFKSL YES that’s how you start a song. Seonghwa and Yunho, beautiful. Wooyoung!! sounds amazing!! Seonghwa’s low voice o I was not prepared. San helloooo I love the instrumentation at this part. Jongho, as expected with the high note. Oh OH KAJA!! oooooohhhhh man the chorus goes hard I can’t wait to see the choreo. The production on this is spectacular. FiX oN MiNgiiiiii go off oml 🔥 YEOSANG 👏🏻 GET 👏🏻 THOSE 👏🏻 LINES 👏🏻 this is a head banging song I’m head banging rn. The way they bring it back right before the chorus *chef’s kiss* This is overwhelming man. Jongho with the bridge yussss he and San sound amazing. It’s starting kinda like a sad song this isn’t a sad song is it?? SANIIIIEEE! Aw this is cute I like it. Hongjoooooooong! I love this rap it reminds me of something. Ooh prechorus?? This prechorus, idk what to say it’s amazing. Hongjoong my boy, this style of rap holy cow. Did someone tell him this is my fave style of rap, because— oh, he’s still going?? Ah this is going on repeat the rest of today 🥰 Yeosang I couldn’t be happier you sound gorgeous and Yunho woah their voices match well. WOOYOUNG AGAIN!! This part was made for him it has to be. JONGHO! SO PLEASE!! This bridge I’m just a mess of tears now they are really singing their hearts out. Is it too early to have a favourite?

Yay there is already a fun flavour in this song! Hongjoong your voice is so rich in the low register daaaaang I need more of this. Seonghwa is that you? I feel like I haven’t heard his voice since Wonderland I’m sorry seonghwa my bff I’m getting whiplash trying to hear everyone’s parts but you killed it. These lyrics!! This is a hype song fs. THE BEAT DROP AAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAH!! “Ayyy we are gonna win” YES YOU ARE BOYS! Oh shoot I said that out loud I hope no one heard. Okay yes this is my new hype song no one is allowed to be discouraged listening to this. Oop “aha” Hongjoong hakdlaplajql I squealed again. Aw the rap verses were short but still slayed. This song is so fast I can’t keep up but I love it I am feeling this. The low voices and then the beat drop I can’t FUNCTION THIS IS SPECTACULAR !!!!! You are gonna wiiiiiin. This reminds me of Pirate King the altered voice and then adding a harmony the second time, anyone feel me? Mingi singing in the bridge again yes I love this. Ooo EDM break aaaahhah go crazy go stupidddd! I want a choreo for this, I need a choreo for this. Woah the instrumental is very unusual here. And it ended like that with the piano, deconstructing the elements of the song. Oh I need a second listen for musical reasons but we gotta move on.

This album is moving way too quickly we’re halfway done ripppp. I love the instrumental here it’s super slick. I’m already enjoying this very much. Oh high notes San!! Vocal line has popped off, exceeds expectations 100% Aww hi Mingi. Ah thank God the chorus is sweet and full of riffs wowowow this is a sharp contrast from last song. YEOSANG!!! My heart jumps every time I hear him, you don’t know how hard I prayed for him to have more lines. Hongjoong! What are these voices in the background?. Adorable, this is adorable aaaaahaha!! Oh it’s “we are one, we stay one” that they spoiled in ANEWZ I seeeee. This chorus ugh this whole song I love I just have the biggest smile on my face while also sobbing yall don’t understand. The bridge ahh idek what to say I’m so happy with this. You boys make me so proud I hope you know that 😭 !! The voices are back! This is literally so cute hELP

Sunrise. Okay deep breaths. I’m gonna just listen and try to not think about the fact Hongjoong cried writing this song. Let’s go. .... oh. OH. Oh it’s soft. I’m soft 🥺 ahhh man they sound so good. We’ve added instruments in the back. Oh Jongho that was such a clear note the vowel was perfect there. This chorus I can’t. Yeah ok I’m crying again something about the guitar I . Cant type. Oh man. Oh OH OH the bridge the BRIDGE THE BRIDGE everything the vocals the background music. Okay here’s our real stomp stomp clap moment. Ah ok wiping the tears now. They sound great. That was an experience I hope I get to breathe during this but I already know I won’t. Um.. it’s piano... for like a solid 20 seconds and it’s slightly jazzy are we getting a ballad?? Our first real ballad!! Eeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Seonghwa yessss 🥰 Oh you guys I’ve wanted to hear a ballad from him for so long you don’t even know. Wait everyone sounds so perfect I can’t even describe this. Yunho baby yesss your voice. Wooyoung oml SAN ahhh San your transitions are stunning. Jongho our ballad king it’s like he’s barely even trying and it sounds amazing. Lovely lovely lovely. Mingiiiii he’s singing yet again. Hongjoong too!! Yes oh yes this is it. Their voices all being showcased so perfectly. I’m amazed how well they can all fit this style just as well as they can fit a song like Win. I have one criticism only so far and yall already know what it is. Yeosang still could’ve gotten more lines in this one :_( This is the last song before Beginning of the End oh no. Nooooo I don’t want it to be over. Oh? OH? Yeosang! Yeosangggggg!! Omg I have goosebumps he said NO IM TAKING OVER it’s MY SONG NOW! Wow amazing. The structure of this has been so so interesting I’m definitely going back to analyse. No it’s over...

I’m scared. I’m crying again noo it hasn’t even started jeez pull yourself together. Ok but before I start I really don’t want it to be over and not in a way that implies I want more songs just thinking about how... this is Ep Fin right? The end. Obviously not of ATEEZ (God forbid) it’s only been a year and they’re slaying it I mean absolutely knocking it out of the park each Ep bigger and bolder than the last, they aren’t afraid to try things and when they do they hit the nail on the head. But still this is the end of an era, a storyline too if I’m correct. And it’s just a surreal experience to see it come to a close. ATEEZ, I don’t know where you’re taking us next but I trust you guys and I know it’s going to be amazing.

Ok anyway let’s start the song 🤣 crackling noise? Fire? Ok it’s orchestral. VERY orchestral. “Open your eyes” I felt that San. They were open but I just opened them again. This orchestra is really really moving and cinematic I love it. I see what this is, we’re going Intro: Long Journey except Outro version which is fuller, richer, even more epic and emotional. Oh boy I’m really crying now. Idek what to say again I’m speechless. Oh it swells just like Intro!! Is it the end? Woah???????? What is this? .....SAN?? Wait wait wait it’s over? Like that? No hang on. Waaaait what was that? Seriously that was very strange. I’m not imagining things am I? No does this have something to do with upcoming albums? I’m so confused 😭 it sounded rly cool and spooky whatever it was. Well. Okay! Yeah I guess that’s it. That was the last straw. I should really try to go back to sleep I only have a few hours till I have to get up. But now I’m probably going to go write something, that music was really inspiring.
