Some concept drawings for designs/ ideas for my own superman au.

(note that all of these are placeholders/concepts and are likely to be scrapped-reworked or otherwise changed in any way + it's probably gonna be months or years until I actually make something concrete, since I want to get well acquainted with comics lore first, and I have almost 0 experience writing outside of school projects. So, like, don't be looking forward to anything more than fanart for some time)

one of my favorite clark headcanons that i have (that is completely unsupported by canon) is that he's transgender by kryptonian standards. martha and jon kent raised him as a boy and as he grew up he never had any reason to doubt it at all, he was like yeah i'm a boy, makes sense. and then he gets to the fortress of solitude for the first time and it turns out how Gender works on krypton was just Different enough that clark doesn't really fit the kryptonian standards of whatever he was supposed to be. bonus points because this makes him feel like even more of an outsider as a kryptonian, even if he's the last one left.
#do i know what those kryptonian gender customs are? no and i kind of don't care to come up with them#just cuz that's not my favorite thing to do but someone else can if they like my idea#i just love the idea of 1) trans clark 2) clark discovering his heritage but also as he learns more about his heritage#realizing that because of how he was raised- and it was nobody's fault- even though it's the only explanation for why he's so different#from humans he still can't help but feel like he's not a real kryptonian either#brought to you by THIS STARTED AS A FUN HEADCANON FOR HIM TO BE TRANS IN A COOL ALIEN WAY#BUT TURNED OUT TO BE ACTUALLY PROJECTION OF SOME PERSONAL SHIT I HAVE ONLY CONSCIOUSLY THOUGHT ABOUT LIKE TWICE SO OOPS#bluebird.txt#superman#was watching superman 1978 and i don't have any real thoughts about it yet but i'm just rotating in my head#that jor-el said 'this is your home.' when describing krypton.#like. he's never been there. he can never go there. it doesn't exist anymore and he will be raised human.#he will be raised in a world that is so completely unlike his own and he will not grow up with as a kryptonian.#and yet jor-el says of krypton 'this is your home.'#like just give me a moment.#so interesting to me who considers who what. some guy in high school#told me i wasn't mexican because i din't recognize some candies my (cuban) teacher brought back when he visited mexico#he said i wasn't even latino#well first of all that guy was a first-class asshole seriously my kudos to him#for having such an impressive amount of hatred and unhappiness in his little soul#second of all. he didn't think i was latino. my own sister only calls me mexican when it's convenient for her#my parents are proud of their american children and in high school my mexican (as in grew up there) friend wa always proud#to call me a fellow mexican (or at least a chicana)#so i just find it so fascinating that in this movie jor-el says son you will never know your birthplace your parents's home firsthand#but it is your home.#my parents would never EVER call mexico my home i don't think they'd even call it THEIR home#i just. i'm thinking about it a lot.#high fives clark kent in child of immigrants and everything that means swag solidarity

I’d love for DC to remember that one of Carter Hall’s (Hawkman’s) past lives was Catar-Ol, a Kryptonian who dedicated himself to archaeology, philosophy, and history. He was even Kara’s history teacher and got along very well with the entire El family (especially Jor-El).
It would be so interesting to explore this because there's literally a being (still alive) who remembers living on Krypton, who knows its culture, traditions, and history perfectly. I’d also love to see Carter in the Fortress of Solitude.
And yes, I want a meeting/conversation between Clark, Carter, and Kara—especially when you remember that in Hawkman Vol. 5 (2018), Catar seems to care a lot about Kara and refers to Clark as “Jor-El’s boy.”
That reunion would be so touching, in my opinion. It might ease some of Catar’s pain, since he died along with Krypton and never knew if anyone remembered his planet (which he says was his greatest burden in Venditti’s Hawkman run).
Plus, it would be hilarious because in another past life, Carter was also Sir Brian Kent—an ancestor of Jonathan “Pa” Kent.

Turns out one of my favorite childhood cartoons is actually Cold War propaganda funded by the CIA. I truly cannot tell you the reason I loved to watch this piece of political commentary from the 1950's at the age of nine, but I watched it a lot. For those who haven't seen it, it has some pretty upsetting depictions of the farm animal deaths, and it's pretty dark. They even go out of their way to show deaths that are barely mentioned in the original novella. The animation still holds up, though.

Smallville what if au
Jor-el and Laura like...didn't die and went with Clark to Smallville and raised him. The show would go a lot of differently. Especially Lionel.
Lionel would definitely go through character development a lot of quicker if Jor-el like...scared the shot out of him and his daddy issues were brought up.
Jor-el: I'm an alien I need help with new names.
Jonathan: Well Lionel luthor could help since se saved his son.
Jor-el looking at Lionel's eyes and kill Bill sirens go off. Much to Lionel's confusion.
********
2 episodes later****
Jor-el: Hello veritas. I appreciate you accepting my call.
Jor-el:
Lionel: Oh you.
Jor-el: Oh god it's you
And it just....escalates from there.
“You two know each other?” Doctor Virgil Swann queried with an upward tick of an eyebrow, his eyes glancing between the two as he sat unmoving in his chair. He observed the two men stand in front of each other, sizing the other like two cocks ready to fight in a prize pit.
“Something like that,” the alien answered in accented English that sounded very much like he was from the mid-west.
“Not really, no,” Lionel supplied instead, a glare marring his usually stoic features. “I provided paperwork for him and his family as payment for saving my son. Illegal aliens that were looking for asylum in the United States. Never thought at the time that it would be literal.”
Jor-El snorted in bemusement, “No, I suppose not.”
“Since then he,” Lionel gestures at the alien, “Has been purposely interfering in my business and I have no idea why.”
Swann sighed, “Have you tried asking?”
“I did, once!” Lionel threw up his hands and turned away from Jor-El, “Said something about knowing my eyes. We’ve never met prior to the meteor shower so I have no idea what he is talking about.”
“Your father,” Jor-El tells him and Lionel immediately froze, a retort frozen on his lips. The alien and Swann watched as the man swallowed thickly and his complexion grow paler by the second. “You two have the same eyes.”
“You have been to Earth before?” Swann asked curiously.
Lionel still stood frozen but the alien could see that his mind was recovering. He wondered why mentioning the man’s father had such a strong reaction from him. “Once, many decades ago. It was a right of passage my House does to show that our sons are ready to lead. If we can show compassion and generosity to those who are… less developed than we can rule our people justly.”
“What did he do?” Lionel’s voice had cracked on the last word.
“Murdered the woman I had fallen in love with.” It was said with such simplicity, anyone else might have missed the animosity hidden in the depths of Jor-El’s voice.
Lionel swallowed thickly and stared wide-eyed at the alien, “I… You… He…?” He frowned and took a deep breath to settle his nerves and anxiety. Once he felt under control again, he continued to speak but much more clearly. Much more like himself. “Please tell me you are not going to make me pay for his sins?”
Jor-El raised an eyebrow once more at the man, “On Krypton, the glories and the sins of the father are those of the sons. What our forebears do will reflect upon our descendants.”
“That’s not fair,” Lionel protested, clearly not wanting to suffer any further transgressions from his late father. “I should not have to suffer whatever misdeed my father has done.”
“On Krypton, you would have.”
“But this is not Krypton,” Swann pointed out, surprisingly, in Lionel’s defense. “On Earth we settle injustices differently.”
“I am aware,” Jor-El nodded and eyed the son of the man who had murdered Louise. He stood with his hands now clasped behind him, looking like the calm and clever businessman he had become. But Jor-El could see that the man’s heartbeat was racing. He was afraid and nervous, but the kryptonian suspected it was over something else and not because of what he might do to avenge Louise.
“Then you know I cannot be held accountable for what Lachlan has done,” Lionel argued, his lips turning slightly downward. “I will not be held accountable.” Jor-El could hear the fear in the man’s voice. It was subtle and barely there but he has had years to observe humans and learn their emotional tells.
“You’re afraid of him?” Jor-El dared to ask and it seemed to offend Lionel.
“Afraid?” he scoffed and turned away from the two. His hands released and he went over to the minibar to pour himself a drink. “I’m not afraid of my father. The man is long dead and buried.”
Jor-El followed and Swann turned his chair to better observe the two men. “Yes you are. Your heart is racing at the mere mention of him and has been racing since you’ve learned he is a murderer.”
Lionel knocked back the cognac he poured and then refilled his glass. “Do not presume to understand me.”
“What did he do to you?” the alien asked and the businessman was deathly quiet, his drink held just before his lips as he stared back at Jor-El. “He hurt you.”
The man snarled, “You know nothing!” He pointed a finger in his direction, the glass of alcohol in hand as he spoke. “My father was not a good man and he deserved the death he got. But I’ll be damned if I allow some alien make me pay for his crime.”
“Lionel,” Doctor Swann interjected. “No one will make you pay for Lachlan’s crime.”
“He has been making me suffer it already!” he yelled back, his temper clearly rising with every moment he feels he has been cornered. “Joesph Jorel has sabotaged my business in Smallville and his damn son has broken into my manor twice now!”
“Kal-El only has done so to see your son,” Jor-El clarified. “Even now he is playing with your son. I believe they are attempting to fly off the roof.”
Lionel paused as he stared in disbelief at the kryptonian. “They’re doing what?!”
“Attempting to fly. Do not worry, Kal-El won’t allow Alexander to come to harm.”
“My son cannot fly!” Lionel sat his glass back on the bar and immediately hurried out of the library to go find his son.
Jor-El simply stared after the man before turning to Doctor Swann, “He will do.”
“You are certain?” Swann wanted to make sure.
“He will serve well as my emissary on this world,” the kryptonian leader concluded. “It will be his recompense for what his father did. Make the arrangements.”
“Very well.”

Currently rewatching Smallville (repeatedly, because this is how I live my life).
It holds up. These are still my favorite Clark Kent and Lois Lane, it's still the "Superman" story I love the most (even though it's not really about Superman at all, it's all about Clark Kent becoming Superman).
I can go on FOREVER about these characters and the themes on this show. And I have. Just ask my best friends, they have heard it endlessly.
So...I guess maybe be prepared for the onslaught of a show that is way past it's trendy time and my (likely) diatribes about how Smallville Jor-El is a fucking villain and the actual worst.
Also, my love for Lois Lane, Martha Kent and Chloe Sullivan runs deep and I will stand for no slander here. Lana is also just fine. I'm not here for shipping wars (though I do clearly have a preference if you see my reblogs).
Sorry to anyone who originally followed my Shadow & Bones posts, those will come around as well! Just in Smallville land right now.
